For today’s Folktale Week theme of “Underground”, I had planned to do a drawing inspired by The Green Children of Woolpit, but didn’t have time/didn’t want to burn myself out (since I’m honestly feeling a little burnt out these days). If you’re unfamiliar with the story, here’s a short(ish) version: In 12th Century England near the town of Woolpit, two mysterious children —a boy and a girl— were found stuck at the bottom of a wolf pit. They did not speak English, they were skittish and apprehensive, and refused to eat anything but broad beans. The strangest thing, however, was that the children had green-tinted skin.
The children were taken into the care of a local squire, and eventually they began to learn English and the green hue of their skin dissipated. In time, the children claimed to come from “St. Martin’s Land”, a place underground enveloped in perpetual twilight, and they did not know how they got to Woolpit. While this story has all the hallmarks of a folktale, there are records of the young girl growing up and marrying a local lord, and sadly, records of her brother passing away. The theories surrounding The Green Children of Woolpit range from everything from Flemish refugees to extraterrestrials. We’ll probably never know the truth behind this odd story, but I find the way it has grown and evolved into a legend over the centuries fascinating! I hope when I have more time and stamina, I can revisit this concept and do a complete drawing of these two weird green little kids!

Friederike Hauffe, the Seeress of Prevorst and Dr. Justinus Kerner for Folktale Week on Instagram: Day Four: Sleep. ☄️ Mrs. Hauffe (1801-1829) was a German mystic and "sleep-waker" who could see the future, communicate with ghosts and spirits, see the time of people's deaths, and sense magnetic fields. She lived in the house of Dr. Justinus Kerner as a patient for an unknown chronic illness for three years while he wrote a book about her visions and attempted to scientifically study ghosts, clairvoyance, and the afterlife.

I’ve been working on this enchanting commission over the last few days; a variation of my sword illustration but with oak leaf handles and an acorn pommel. Surrounded by Rowan berries- oh the details! I only have a few commission slots left in my books for next month, so just send me a DM or an email if you’re interested 🤍📜🏹 #swordart #fatm #witchythings #knightcore #folktaleweek #whimsicalart #botanical #etherealaesthetic https://www.instagram.com/p/CfWoJvfsvXZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 5 folktale week challenge. Costume. The whole gang approved the butterfly costume, it was almost camouflage with the exception of auburn hair(perhaps a potion?) #folktaleweek2022 #folktaleweek #costume #butterfly #watercolour #procreate #childrenillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/ClHWoH7Ss4d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

stonegate devil for folktale week, the prompt was ‘fool’.
The stonegate devil is a little carved statue on Stonegate in York, which was well known for print shops. The demon was blamed for messing with the type & causing spelling mistakes!
Following on from last year’s Yorkshire folktales theme, I’ve got ideas for all the prompts but won’t have time to complete them all this week 😅

I’m joining Folktale Week! Today’s prompt is FOOL, and my illustration is the Fool tarot card with a kidlit twist (apologies to Pamela Colman Smith). A few years ago I learned how to read tarot cards and it’s still my favorite hidden talent. Upright, the Fool indicates beginnings, innocence, and spontaneity. Reversed (upside-down), the Fool indicates holding back, recklessness, and risk-taking. When the Fool appears in a reading, get ready for adventure!
