Celebrated by an exhibition at its new building in White City, London in January, the MRC LMS launched a book and website with over 100 interpretations of the phrase ‘A Picture of Health’ gathered from a broad cross-section of society.
As their Picture of Health, research scientist Jane Goodall, neuroscientist Giles Yeo and storyteller Clare Goodall created a textile sculpture representing brain circuits involved in appetite and food intake. Read why:
"A healthy neuronal circuitry between the different control centres of the brain involved in appetite and food intake is important to maintain a healthy body weight. Broadly, three control regions – the fuel sensor, formed of the paraventricular (PVN) and arcuate (ARC) nuclei in the hypothalamus; the hindbrain’s visceral centre, which signals fullness and illness; and the reward centre, which makes eating feel nice. In this sculpture, the coloured lattice represents the overlapping layers of neuronal projections to these centres that occur in our brain. Red threads represent neurons that stop eating, green those increasing food intake and yellow threads represent neurons projecting from the hindbrain to the reward centre signalling a spectrum from pleasant to unpleasant. Purple threads represent neurons from the reward centre to the rest of the brain. The sculpture was made using a process that reflects a scientific technique called CLARITY which ‘clears’ tissue of lipids, leaving a 3D lattice which you can image using a high-powered microscope." Not gonna lie, the lack of awareness about Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) made me not realise I could even have an eating disorder until I was in my 20s because I never related food to body image.
And it's kind of bizarre that I hadn't heard of it before a couple of years ago considering it's quite common among neurodivergent people (particularly, but not restricted to, people who are autistic or ADHD) considering a huge part of it is avoiding foods of certain textures, smells, colours, associations, etc.
I already had problems when it came to textures n' whatnot, but it also spiralled out of control when I got pretty darn sick a few years ago and I was confronted with my most intense phobia, which is emetophobia, pretty much every day because every time I ate I felt sick, so I'd just avoid eating anything until absolutely had to. And another huge part of ARFID is avoiding foods because you're terrified of the consequences of eating (which can commonly be caused by emetophobia).
So, not only was I really ill and already had pre-existing issues with food textures, but my ARFID was triggered to its absolute worst due to being emetophobic.
I'm still not fully recovered from the ARFID symptoms that were triggered by the trauma of being ill for such a prolonged period of time, but I know I've recovered a fair amount by the fact that I've finally gained weight after all these years, I'm eating more regularly again, and I have way less panic attacks.
Eliminating processed foods is a healthy step, but there is no evidence to suggest a gluten-free diet will help you lose weight. Many popular diets, such as intermittent fasting, juice cleanses, keto, paleo, and gluten-free diets, may promise quick, easy weight loss. People who do not have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity might try gluten-free diets hoping to lose weight.
Proponents of intermittent fasting claim intermittent fasting helps lose weight and body fat, as well as improving health in other ways. Instead of cutting back on food intake and dealing with the mental struggles that come with dieting, you can shed pounds by increasing your activity, changing when you eat, and even using specific tricks to increase metabolism. While the fastest, most effective way to lose weight is by pairing a healthy diet with a good workout routine, you may want to try these effective options that do not involve going on diet.
Providing many health benefits, exercise helps to burn excess calories you cannot lose with a diet alone. Dieting is a fast way to shed any excess body fat. Once you lose all of the excess weight that you are trying to shed, you can cut back on your cardio days and add in some weight-training days. Once you begin getting the sleep that your body needs, you should lose one to two pounds per month with no other work.
Interestingly, you can consume lots of calories every day and still be able to lose weight as long as you eat only one daily meal in a small window. You need a certain amount of calories in order to keep up with your current weight and perform your daily activities. Eating more helps you keep a lower caloric intake, resulting in weight loss. Eat foods high in lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber, and you will feel full all day long, rarely getting any cravings.
Consider including several servings of high-protein foods in your daily meals. Adding fresh vegetables to your diet is a great way to substitute for caloric, high-fat foods. In addition to including fresh vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and good fats in your diet, you should have 4-6 meals a day, smaller portions on smaller plates, and eat slowly. A high-protein diet may help you maintain lean muscle mass, reduce your appetite, and reduce calorie consumption.
Eat foods that are rich in fiber Foods that are rich in fiber may help you stay full, perfect for losing weight. Unsweetened drinks, such as water and black coffee, have been shown to help lower your caloric intake, which may result in weight loss over time. Unsweetened beverages are lower in calories and carbohydrates, making them a good option for people who are following the ketogenic diet or trying to lose weight. Research shows that a plant-based diet can not only help with weight loss, it is easier to stick with than low-calorie diets.
If you are looking for ways to cut your fat and keep your desired bodyweight off over an extended period, then choosing a more sustainable method for losing weight is a must.
1,400 calories - chicken caesar wrap and fries from kelsey's, my entire calorie allotment in one meal, yikes lol
240 calories - venti shaken espresso with 4 pumps of toffee nut syrup
300 calories - chicken and rice soup, bulked up with 50g chickpea protein pasta and 1 chopped up and steamed carrot
daily total - 1,940 calories
tbh in the long run, the odd day of going over calories doesn't really matter, so i don't even care about going way over. but i could've made a smarter choice at kelsey's. i almost got a curry bowl for 700 calories, and i wish i did because those fries were pretty greasy and upset my stomach. and second, i need to stop ordering venti drinks from starbucks lol, that is way too much liquid for me, i couldn't even finish it, and i ended up feeling nauseous afterwards.. either from too much sugar or too much caffeine.
Mi loves who are struggling with acne and have tried nearly all skincare ingredients available on earth:
You might consider taking note of your sugar intake.
I'm not just talking about chocolates and desserts, I'm talking carbohydrates, ketchup, yogurt, sports drinks, granola, flavored coffees, protein bars, iced tea, store-bought premade soup, breakfast cereals, canned goods, processed cheese, processed meat, white bread, mayo, milk, fruits, and yes, even your salad dressings.
Don't cut everything out, but do be mindful of how much you've been eating too much of these. Nothing is safe (even fruits and vegetables have some form of sugar in it), and that's for a reason! Sugar is good for you. But do notice if you've been taking in too much of these things recently and if you've had any new citizens on your face too! Might be a lot more related than you think.
