the way you've been fidgeting with the ring on your finger is distracting, and as the argument continues, his gaze can't help flickering down now and then to observe what you're doing. he really hopes you don't take it off at some point. this isn't a drama, he keeps telling himself, but his worries come true and his throat closes up as you slip off the ring completely. the words die on his tongue, and you haven't even noticed, rolling the metal between your fingers. he approaches you carefully, reaching for your hands first to take the ring and put it back in place without a sound:

"stop that," he says suddenly, and you freeze at his tone, at the way his eyes are widened and staring at your hands, but his voice startles you. the room is silent, save for the high pitched clink of your promise ring hitting the floor, clattering a few times before rolling to a stop by his feet. he picks it up and holds it out to you, eyebrows furrowed as if asking whether you meant something by it. you didn't, you swear:

seungcheol, SOONYOUNG, mingyu

he finds your ring on the kitchen counter when he goes to get water. it's nearly 4am and you're sound asleep in the guest room, not wanting to stay in the same bed tonight, so there's no way you took it off and forgot about it...he pockets the ring, fingers curling tight around it like he's holding together the pieces of his heart. he'll sort this out with you in the morning. he doesn't want to think about what it means, but it has him tossing and turning all night:

you approach him and wait for him to hold out a hand before dropping the promise ring into his palm. the silence is deafening. he looks at you, down at the ring, up at you again. "what're you saying?" he finally manages, though it's a hoarse whisper, more of a croak than his actual voice. please don't break his heart here:

JEONGHAN: i feel like he realizes early on, but he doesn't tell you lmfao he likes messing with you, so he'll be like, "alright, see you in a bit!" and you're fine until you realize just how many guests are coming in late. he's never too far, though, so once you start looking around, he materializes, easing the cup out of your hand to lace your fingers together. it's cute how the tension literally melts from your shoulders. he doesn't do it much — he hates when you're feeling distressed.

WONWOO: it takes him a long time to notice your habit, to be honest. whenever he pulls you in and introduces you to new people, you fall into the conversation with an easy smile and a charming laugh. the fact that you always slip your hand into his? thought you were just trying to be cute. it isn't until he sees you gripping the edge of seungcheol's sleeve as you talk with a different group that he realizes. after that, he stops wandering off at gatherings in case you need him.

SEOKMIN: he will literally stop talking and ask you what you're doing, and that makes your wrinkle your nose in embarrassment. "nothing," you tell him, hand moving back to your own pocket. but he doesn't mean it maliciously — you just surprised him by grabbing the back of his shirt. the person in front of you excuses themself for a drink while seokmin takes your wrist and tucks it into his elbow. your fingers curl into the fabric as he leads you around. your now relaxed posture doesn't go unnoticed by him.

MINGYU: he likes socializing with people, and people like socializing with him. so whenever you arrive at an event, he'll tell you to wander off on your own while he greets the others. it's not because he doesn't want to be with you — he just feels bad taking up your time. this time, you hover by his shoulder, twiddling your fingers as you ask, "...can i go with you?" why didn't you ask him earlier omg he loves that you're hanging off his arm.

CHAN: he loves when you depend on him. it's like — wow, you trust him enough? he makes you feel safe? so when you ask to hold his hand, skittish amidst the growing crowd, he can't help standing a little straighter. "of course," he says, beaming with all the warmth in the world as you take hold of his sleeve. he takes his role as your pillar very seriously and keeps you behind him as he parts the crowd. it's hard to stay nervous when he keeps squeezing your hands to check in.

SEUNGCHEOL: whenever he passes you, i feel like he squeezes your hip. it's nothing more than that; he grabs you quickly with one hand and then moves on with a grin and a murmured excuse me because he's sure that you're thinking of him now. it doesn't matter if there's plenty of space for him to go around you.

JEONGHAN: he definitely puts a hand on your leg. regardless of whether his attention is actively on you, he slides his hand over and places it on your thigh. he squeezes your knee affectionately when it gets chaotic, and i know i talk about him doing this all the time, but it's canon, okay.

WONWOO: i firmly believe that he's a shirt tugger. when you're standing by the couch talking to someone across the room, he'll tug on your shirt until you sit down next to him. when he gets fidgety, he'll pull on your sleeves without a word. sometimes he doesn't even realize he's doing it.

MINGYU: he puts his feet in your lap, if not himself. it doesn't matter how much of a gap you put between you two. he just keeps scooting over, and before you know it, he has his legs thrown over yours, curling into you as he laughs at someone's joke. this doesn't count as a small touch, but oh well.

VERNON: he seeks you out in a crowd. comes up next to you with his hands stuffed into his pockets and taps your shoulder with his. it's enough to get your attention, and when you look over, he shoots you a smile. sometimes the smile is just a greeting, sometimes it's asking if you're alright. regardless, he stays there with his elbow brushing against yours.

JEONGHAN: "i'm going to a meeting, but feel free to make yourself at home until i'm back. the others don't mind when you're here," he tells you from the front hall, hands busy tugging on his boots. you hum from the couch, raising your arm in a half hearted farewell that he can't see. "okay, drive safe, i love you." the footsteps marching towards the door suddenly stop. there's hurried unzipping as he kicks off his boots and rushes into the living room again. "what'd you say?" the distance between the threshold and your spot is tiny, but his voice is breathless as he stops by your side. "say that again." you furrow your brows. "okay, bye, drive safe...?" but with the way you're fighting your smile, he knows you're teasing him on purpose. sits on your lap and refuses to get up until you say it. "i'm going to be late, y'know." "and whose fault is that???" "yours!"

JOSHUA: maybe he would've reacted differently if you two were alone, but you're not alone. two other members are in the kitchen preparing snacks for movie night, and they definitely heard your casual "i love you" when he asked about — actually, he can't remember what happened leading up to this moment. what were you saying before? his mind is filled with his friends' amused ooh's from the other room, and he's busy planning how he can respond without making a fool of himself. he settles for pressing a kiss to your knuckles and smiling to soothe your nerves. "we'll talk after this," he says, squeezing your fingers as you nod. it's all he can think about during the movie, though. if you wanted to distract him from something he's wanted to watch for a while, congrats, you've succeeded, so now you have to re-watch it with him.

SOONYOUNG: he's face down on the practice room floor when you come in and squat beside him. "whatcha up to?" you prod at his shoulder. he groans, twiddling his fingers in your general direction. "taking a break. there's this cool part in the song, but none of my moves really fit." he huffs. "i figured i'd clear my head and try again in a bit." "you want snacks?" "yes please." "alright, i'll be back. love you." his hand shoots out to grab your ankle before you can step away. he doesn't move, though; it's silent for a moment until he lets out a single chuckle. a pause, and then another chuckle. it doesn't take long for him to start full-on giggling into the ground and you're rolling your eyes when he flips onto his back, giddy smile as infectious as ever. you poke his forehead this time, red from sticking to the wood flooring. "want to walk to the store with me? maybe the air here is getting to you."

WONWOO: you perk up at the box of sweets in his hands. "wow, i was craving these!" you exclaim as he opens the package and gives you one. "i know. i overhead you muttering about it, so i picked some up," he says, taking one for himself. you've been hyping them up so much; time to see if they're actually good. he takes a bite. "you're always paying attention. thanks for that, i love you." he chokes and hits his chest before wheezing, "you can't just — say that out of nowhere!" he's burying his face in his hands now, bent over at the waist. this is so embarrassing. he can't believe you just said those words and his first reaction wasn't to say it back but to nearly do a spit take like in a tv show. peeking out from between his fingers, he mumbles, "can we rewind two minutes and do that again?"

JIHOON: he's showing you one of his party tricks, probably the karaoke echo one, and the way he's getting weirdly excited over it has your heart so fond. "you're cute," you say, laughing at how your attention stokes his ego. his spine straightens at that. "i love you." he stops then, nearly dropping his microphone. "ah, is that so." he nods like it's not a big deal, but he can't make eye contact anymore and you know how he acts when he's embarrassed, so when his ears get progressively redder, your grin just widens. "can you show me another trick? maybe the finger snapping one? you haven't done that one in a while." "huh? oh, yeah. yeah, i can. uh." you've rarely seen him so flustered, and it's sweet that he's like this over just a few words. it'll take him a day or two, but he'll text you and ask if you meant what you said. of course you did??

SEUNGCHEOL: he realizes what you're doing as soon as you grab your pillow from the bed, so he blocks the door with his absurdly wide shoulders. "where do you think you're going?" he asks, crossing his arms and straightening his spine for good measure, but his leader posture is negated by his fuzzy bunny-printed pjs. "to sleep." he nods behind you. "the bed's over there, though." you stare at him, eyebrow raised, wondering who will move first. of course, it's him. it takes a few minutes before he steps into you, places his hands on your waist, and walks you backwards until your legs hit the bed and you tumble back. he hooks a leg around your ankles. "alright, now go to sleep." he closes his eyes, ignoring how you squirm in his arms. you huff. "scoot over. if you're going to be difficult, at least let me get comfortable."

JEONGHAN: he knows what you're doing, but he also knows that he can't manhandle you out of anything, so he settles for trailing behind you as you collect your pillow and an extra blanket from the closet. "...what are you doing?" you finally ask when he also grabs a blanket. he shrugs. "whatever you're doing." he follows you to the living room, and while you get settled on the couch, he sits on the floor by you and throws the blanket over his legs. "seriously, what are you doing?" you huff, unable to turn off the lamp. "you think i'm going to let you sleep out here alone?" "you're going to hurt your back." "and you won't?" still upright, he leans back against the couch and closes his eyes. "good night." he's definitely guilting you into going to bed because you can't just let him stay like that, but hey, it works.

WONWOO: he tries to pull the pillow from your grasp, but your fingers dig into it, crushing the soft shape between your hands. "i'm going to sleep on the couch," you snap. this was supposed to be a way to distance yourself from the argument, but your decision is quickly on track to blowing up into another argument. he frowns. "no, it's fine. i can," he insists. "you always complain about how lumpy it is." "so you don't want to hear me complain again? is that it?" his frown deepens. "that's not...i want you to have a good night's sleep for tomorrow. you have that big thing that you've been working on, right? you need rest." your stance relaxes at that. he remembered?? you only mentioned it in passing. he uses your hesitation to spin you around and nudge you back into the room. "so let's go, hurry and sleep."

MINGYU: the argument made him so exhausted that he crawled into bed and fell asleep. he figured that you'd join him later, which is why he's so confused when he wakes up in the middle of the night and your side is still empty. it's cold, like you were never there in the first place, and there's no sounds of you in the bathroom or the kitchen. pulling on a sweatshirt, he pads out into the hallway, whispering your name in case he scares you. he finds you splayed out on the couch, a throw blanket tucked around you. "hey, wake up," he murmurs, frowning as he nudges your shoulder. "come to bed." you blink up at him blearily before burying your face in the couch. "no." "are you still mad?" "...no." clearly, it's time for drastic measures. he lays over you, smushing your body into the cushions. "wha — mingyu!"

VERNON: he rests against the headboard, scrolling through his phone and waiting for you to come in, but after he sees the same video for the fifth time, he decides to go look for you. he finds you curled up on the couch, pretending to be asleep even though the lamp is still on. leaning over you, he asks, "what're you doing out here?" "...sleeping." "oh, okay." he knows it's because of the argument, but he can't just leave you; he'd rather risk your ire than have you shivering under the thin blanket. shuffling around for the tv remote, he finds it under the table and scoots your legs over to make room. once he's settled, he puts your legs over his lap. "why's the tv on?" he shrugs. "we might as well watch a movie." with your comfort movie on-screen, it isn't long until you're curled into his side.

Essay: H/Hr cheek kiss and its significance

UNPOPULAR OPINION

I really like the way the Harmione cheek kiss is phrased.

Many people say it was a "flop reaction" but I actually really like it. Of course it isn't the same as his kiss with Ginny, that was a full on kiss while the kiss in GoF is just a cheek kiss. And yet even this simple cheek kiss is so beautiful to me.

Let's take a look:

Uncle Vernon was waiting beyond the barrier. Mrs. Weasley was close by him. She hugged Harry very tightly when she saw him and whispered in his ear, “I think Dumbledore will let you come to us later in the summer. Keep in touch, Harry.”

“See you, Harry,” said Ron, clapping him on the back.

“’Bye, Harry!” said Hermione, and she did something she had never done before, and kissed him on the cheek.

“Harry — thanks,” George muttered, while Fred nodded fervently at his side.

Harry winked at them, turned to Uncle Vernon, and followed him silently from the station. There was no point worrying yet, he told himself, as he got into the back of the Dursleys’ car.

As Hagrid had said, what would come, would come . . . and he would have to meet it when it did.

First of all, I'd like to note that he was standing in front of the whole Weasley family so it wasn't a moment that he shared alone with Hermione. This means that this kiss was displayed in front of a few people.

To me it feels like a parallel to the Harry/Ginny first kiss (such a magical first kiss tbh) where Harry sees Ginny running towards him and he doesn't care about anything, he forgets everything and everyone when he sees her and just kisses her.

We see a somewhat similar scenario with Harry/Hermione. Harry's just given his money to the twins and now he's saying goodbye to everyone. Mrs Weasley hugs him, Ron claps him on the back and then Hermione comes in. She says goodbye, just like Ron, obviously she isn't going to clap him on the back but there's still something she wants to do, something that means more than just a goodbye. And even though there's people who are watching her and Harry(at least the Weasleys, they're not saying bye to each other so they most probably have their eyes on them), she can't stop herself from leaning in and kissing him on his cheek.

It isn't phrased exactly like that, but that's just the impression you'd get when you look at the text closely. Everything happens so fast.

This cheek kiss is especially cute and meaningful when it's put in context. Just think about it. Think about all that Harry's been through this year, especially recently. He had to fight through the third task, see Krum possessed, witness Cedric dying, unwillingly take part in the ritual to bring Voldemort back, see all death eaters line up in front of him and almost get killed by Voldemort. That's a lot of damage. And after all of this, he is being sent back to the Dursleys', knowing he is going to get no emotional support, he's only going to feel like an outcast. Harry knows he will have to face it.

As Hagrid had said, what would come, would come . . . and he would have to meet it when it did.

Ron and Hermione see all of this. They may not really understand what he's going through, but they both know he's going to need their support and they want to cheer him up. That's the context of the cheek kiss. That's what makes it so sweet and important.

Molly cheers Harry up by telling him that they might be able to see him later during summer, she gives him something to look forward to, to be excited about.

Hermione gives Harry exactly what he needs by kissing him on the cheek, shocking him by doing something she had never done before, making sure this was something he would remember, something that would cheer him up and give him hope.

See what I mean when I say this is a beautiful moment?

But that's not all. I still haven't gotten into the way this is phrased. This isn't a boring or "flop" reaction, even if it's not described like "blissful oblivion".

Let's read closely:

“’Bye, Harry!” said Hermione, and she did something she had never done before, and kissed him on the cheek.

Harry mentions that Hermione kisses his cheek, which isn't surprising, he points out everything that happens. But what is surprising is how he pays attention to this kiss and how he reacts to it.

He could've just said something like:

“’Bye, Harry!” said Hermione and kissed him on the cheek.

Or even:

“’Bye, Harry!” said Hermione and, surprisingly, kissed him on the cheek.

Just to indicate that this kiss wasn't something he expected at all.

But no.

This left such a big impression on Harry that he’s thinking about it more than he should be. He’s shocked and the way this is said is so beautiful. It’s as if this kiss just made him think about all of their previous interactions and made him realize that kissing him was something that Hermione had never done before, ever. And this reaction is phrased perfectly because we get to see it explicitly from Harry’s mind. It’s not only surprising, it’s also making him think about his relationship with Hermione, realizing that she has taken a step forward.

That’s another thing I really like about the phrase.

Hermione did something she had never done before. It indicates many things, one of which being that Harry was left shocked about it and thought about it enough to realize this was something new. And another thing being that this is something new. This is something Hermione has never done before and now she has done it. Their relationship is growing. Something was stopping her from doing it before (maybe she felt like they weren’t close enough or she simply never even thought about it) but now she has taken this step. They’ve entered a new stage. She’s opened the gate to an even stronger relationship. It’s like this kiss was something that has brought them closer and bonded them like never before.

I tried analyzing this phrase as much as I could while also keeping everything canon-based without bringing in headcanons and my imagination. Now ask youself the question, is this phrase really such a disappointment?

I’d like to happily inform you that this essay isn’t over yet. I’ve only analyzed Harry’s reactions. What about Hermione?

This gets a little tricky because the books are written from Harry’s point of view, not Hermione’s. But there’s still something we can make out of the breadcrumbs we have.

I’ve already pointed out that when Hermione kissed Harry’s cheek in front of so many people, she was most probably feeling a similar way to Harry when he kissed Ginny in front of the whole Gryffindor common room in HBP (In Harry/Hermione’s case, the Weasleys were watching but let’s not forget that there are always eyes on the boy-who-lived and they were at the train station! I think it’s safe to assume that at least 5-7 people were watching them).

But I haven’t talked about what Hermione felt after she kissed Harry.

I personally think Hermione would be just as shocked as Harry, thinking about what she had just done. She kissed Harry’s cheek while quite a few people were watching! She’d be so surprised by her own self. But this is just a personal headcanon of mine, there’s no indication to this in the text whatsoever.

Back to canon, this kiss is the last time Hermione is mentioned in GoF, so we don’t know about how she felt. We only see Harry’s reaction to it, we have no information about Hermione and her feelings. So we’ll have to use a different text to guide us.

Since this is their last interaction before having to be separated for months, and especially because this moment is a strong and emotional one, I expect this is something they’d think a lot about and they’d remember each other this way. This is the last thing they said to each other, the last time they were in contact. Harry spent a lot of time thinking about Ron and Hermione over the summer and the kiss was the last interaction he had with Hermione, so this would definitely cross his mind. The same thing would happen with Hermione.

Since we’re talking about summer, let’s use OotP to guide us.

We don’t learn much from Ron and Hermione’s letters, but we can gather quite a lot of information from their first interactions after months of not seeing each other, their last interaction being this memorable cheek kiss.

Here’s the scene I’m talking about:

He caught a brief glimpse of a gloomy high-ceilinged, twin-bedded room, then there was a loud twittering noise, followed by an even louder shriek, and his vision was completely obscured by a large quantity of very bushy hair — Hermione had thrown herself onto him in a hug that nearly knocked him flat, while Ron’s tiny owl, Pigwidgeon, zoomed excitedly round and round their heads.

“HARRY! Ron, he’s here, Harry’s here! We didn’t hear you arrive! Oh, how are you? Are you all right? Have you been furious with us? I bet you have, I know our letters were useless — but we couldn’t tell you anything, Dumbledore made us swear we wouldn’t, oh, we’ve got so much to tell you, and you’ve got to tell us — the dementors! When we heard — and that Ministry hearing — it’s just outrageous, I’ve looked it all up, they can’t expel you, they just can’t, there’s provision in the Decree for the Restriction of Underage Sorcery for the use of magic in life-threatening situations —”

“Let him breathe, Hermione,” said Ron, grinning, closing the door behind Harry. He seemed to have grown several more inches during their month apart, making him taller and more gangly looking than ever, though the long nose, bright red hair, and freckles were the same.

Hermione, still beaming, let go of Harry, but before she could say another word there was a soft whooshing sound and something white soared from the top of a dark wardrobe and landed gently on Harry’s shoulder.

Wow.

The first thing to note here is how Hermione shrieked. She literally screamed out of excitement. That is already a big and obvious clue that Hermione was thinking a lot about Harry and hoping to see him.

And then she hugs him. More enthusiastically than ever before. She nearly knocks him flat!

“Hermione freaks out a bit when she sees Harry. Like she'd been holding her breath. She'd obviously missed him and had been incredibly worried about him. [...] She'd been waiting all summer to speak to him and when she saw him, it was like she just needed to ramble away everything that she'd been wanting to say to him. Harry, despite his obvious animosity, couldn't help but be happy to see her.“ - this quote is taken from here.

The most interesting part is that even after this overwhelming hug and speech, she still doesn’t let go of Harry until Ron ‘reminds’ her to “let him breathe”. She holds onto him for as long as possible.

All of this: the shriek, the hug, the speech, the desire for physical contact is clearly showcasing that Hermione missed him more than ever and she has established an even stronger bond with Harry, so strong that she can’t stop feeling as excited as ever when seeing him.

Compare to the previous years:

CoS:

“Lousy Muggles,” growled Hagrid. “If I’d’ve known —”

“Harry! Harry! Over here!”

Harry looked up and saw Hermione Granger standing at the top of the white flight of steps to Gringotts. She ran down to meet them, her bushy brown hair flying behind her.

“What happened to your glasses? Hello, Hagrid — Oh, it’s wonderful to see you two again — Are you coming into Gringotts, Harry?”

“As soon as I’ve found the Weasleys,” said Harry.

“Yeh won’t have long ter wait,” Hagrid said with a grin.

Harry and Hermione looked around: Sprinting up the crowded street were Ron, Fred, George, Percy, and Mr. Weasley.

Harry woke on the last day of the holidays, thinking that he would at least meet Ron and Hermione tomorrow, on the Hogwarts Express. He got up, dressed, went for a last look at the Firebolt, and was just wondering where he’d have lunch, when someone yelled his name and he turned.

“Harry! HARRY!”

They were there, both of them, sitting outside Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor — Ron looking incredibly freckly, Hermione very brown, both waving frantically at him.

“Finally!” said Ron, grinning at Harry as he sat down. “We went to the Leaky Cauldron, but they said you’d left, and we went to Flourish and Blotts, and Madam Malkin’s, and —”

Mr. Weasley hesitated. Harry could tell that, however angry he was with Fred and George, he hadn’t really intended to tell Mrs. Weasley what had happened. There was a silence, while Mr. Weasley eyed his wife nervously. Then two girls appeared in the kitchen doorway behind Mrs. Weasley. One, with very bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth, was Harry’s and Ron’s friend, Hermione Granger. The other, who was small and red-haired, was Ron’s younger sister, Ginny. Both of them smiled at Harry, who grinned back, which made Ginny go scarlet — she had been very taken with Harry ever since his first visit to the Burrow.

Hermione and Harry are always excited to see each other, but never like in OotP. Their relationship really has grown, they have bonded even more and now they're as close as never before.

The phrasing of the kiss and the scene in OotP has made it obvious. The cheek kiss is a turning point in Harry and Hermione's relationship and they both realize this.

That is the significance of the cheek kiss. But enough about the emotions, reactions and changes, what about the visual side of this scene? Take this paragraph as a fun bonus because we were robbed from this absolutely adorable scene in the movies.

The scene takes place at the train station. This place is so loud and chaotic.

The rest of the journey passed pleasantly enough; Harry wished it could have gone on all summer, in fact, and that he would never arrive at King’s Cross . . . but as he had learned the hard way that year, time will not slow down when something unpleasant lies ahead, and all too soon, the Hogwarts Express was pulling in at platform nine and three-quarters. The usual confusion and noise filled the corridors as the students began to disembark. Ron and Hermione struggled out past Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, carrying their trunks. Harry, however, stayed put.

He left the compartment before they could say another word, stepping over Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, who were still lying on the floor, covered in hex marks.

Mrs Weasley and Ron say goodbye to Harry.

Then Hermione approaches, says goodbye and suddenly kisses his cheek!

As we know from the quote, this is something "she has never done before" so Harry is clearly surprised.

I love imagining Hermione kissing Harry's cheek and then Harry having a surprised, confused and thoughtful expression on his face.

I'm not sure if Harry and Hermione's height difference is mentioned at all in GoF and I'm too tired to research so I can't say if Hermione went on tiptoes or not. I would like it if she did though. :)

All of this quickly vanishes as Fred and George thank Harry and say goodbye and Harry's thoughts shift to the Dursleys...

I wish we had seen this beautiful scene in the movies. If you wish to truly understand the depths of characters and relationships, you should really read the books. This scene is a great demonstration of that.

This marks the end of the essay! To finish it off, I'm going to present my post-kiss headcanons! :D

TSI - Chapter 1 Notes

Here are my full notes and commentary for Chapter 1 of my Harry Potter fic 'The Snake Inside'.

Throughout the chapter there are numbers in parentheses, these numbers correspond to the below notes. To best understand what I’m talking about in the notes I would recommend opening the story in a second tab and following along from there.

1. This is, if you hadn’t noticed, lifted directly from the book, I do do this a couple times however, this is the only one that is italicized. I’m going to try and point out the other instances in chapter notes as well.

2. Another line lifted from the book, although here it has slightly different context

3. This was another line from the book, although again it has slightly different context (also I swear these notes aren’t just going to be me citing passages from the book)

4. I was actually really conflicted over this. Dudley is obviously incredibly spoiled so I figured it made sense that if for once Harry had something that he didn’t that he would throw a fit and demand he get the same. What I wasn’t confident about was how Petunia or Vernon would react as they really do love Dudley, shown by how much they spoil him. In this scenario, I decided that Petunia’s hatred of magic plus her fear of losing Dudley to magic (just like she lost her sister) would drive her to hit Dudley.

5. The first signs of Harry’s sneaky Slytherin side! He reads the room and chooses the best manner to approach the situation, something he would be good at considering he grew up in an abusive household. He would likely have gotten very good at reading moods and acting accordingly at a young age to avoid being hit or yelled at.

6. It might seem like Harry is a little quick to believe in Hogwarts and want to go considering he knows nothing about it. But, it’s an escape from the Dursleys and the terrible school they were going to send him to. Plus, it’s obvious that the Dursleys hate magic, so why would they lie to Harry about him being a wizard?

7. I know in canon Hogwarts is free, but that simply doesn’t make sense to me. In my world, Hogwarts is the best and most elite school in Britain, but it’s not the only one. There are also smaller ‘public’ wizarding schools that people who can’t afford Hogwarts go to. Also, if Hogwarts has a tuition then it only makes sense to me that the Potter Parents would set up an education fund for Harry, especially since their lives were at risk, they would want to make sure that Harry would be able to get the best education possible.

8. Some more Slytherin sneakiness, Harry isn’t a master manipulator by any means but he’s lived with the Dursleys for 11 years, he knows how to play them.

9. I don’t write it in bc it seemed unnecessary, but she does explain her reasoning off-screen.

10. Some foreshadowing here, I thought I was rather clever, finding a logical way for Harry and Vernon to learn how to enter the train platform.

11. This whole paragraph is my attempt at showing how Harry is still just a kid who’s curious about the new world he’s found himself in. I know I write Harry (and all the characters his age) as being a little more mature than they probably would be in reality, so here I was trying to show a pure, childlike curiosity and also some trains of thought that aren’t totally logical bc he is a kid.

12. I do think the Dursleys, or Vernon at least, is more clever than he gets credit for, he is high up in Grunnings, so he has to have some sort of head on his shoulders, and he’s certainly self-serving we saw in book 2 how he lathered up those rich people he wanted to impress. So, I think as much as Vernon might hate magic and think goblins are disgusting, that he would very much be able to put that aside if he thought it might benefit him.

13. The goblins ‘revealing the truth’ to Harry, or giving him or helping him out in some way is kinda over done and doesn’t always make sense as the goblins really have no reason so want to go out of their way to help Harry. But, I needed an unbiased 3rd party to teach Harry a little about the wizarding world and I figured a satisfactory motivation for the goblins would be making money in the form of consultation fees.

14. The first hints of Dumbledore’s manipulations. He wants a naïve Savior who will be easy for him to influence and shape into the person he thinks the world needs. Note, I’m not going for an evil Dumbledore, just a morally grey Dumbledore.

15. Paper business refers to the practice of owning a business on paper but not being involved in how it’s currently ran, I’m not trying to say that the Potters own several companies that sell paper. I don’t know if this is a common term, when I googled it nothing came up, but my dad uses it a lot when talking about businesses. Also, we know in canon that the Potters are rich but in a lot of fics it has evolved into them being extremely wealthy and influential. I’m running with this fanon idea because the Potters are a very old family, they’ve been around since the 12thcentury and married into other very influential families in canon. Also, if I ever get to the later years I do want to mess around with some politics and Harry having power from his family name will be a necessary advantage.

16. I’m not going to bore you guys with paragraphs detailing just how exceedingly rich Harry is, if he can’t even do anything with what he owns yet. He’s 11, he’s not going to be making any smart investments.

17. Like I said earlier with the tuition vault, the Potters were soldiers in a war, they knew they might die and I think it’s only logical that they would take precautions to ensure that Harry would have a comfortable life should they die.

18. This might seem like a lot, but again, the Potters are rich and they want their only child to be able to have a comfortable life even if they die, plus it is supposed to last until Harry’s an adult.

19. This is not canon, JKR said that a galleon is approx. 5 British pounds. I think that’s too low, so I changed it. I mean, it’s solid gold and the highest form of currency it’s got to be worth more than that.

20. Trying to give Dumbledore the benefit of the doubt, but of course Vernon is going to be suspicious of anyone who took money that he could have used.

21. This is just something that I thought made sense, Gringotts has been established as being in the business of making money and how can they do that if they’re cut off from part of their clientele?

22. I’m trying to go in a new direction with the Dursleys, I’m not trying to redeem them, but like Dumbledore, they’re in a grey area, especially Vernon. I think a self-serving Vernon would be interested in learning more about the magic world, or more specifically learning what it can do for him. But also because you need to know your enemy, as interested as he might be in profiting off magic, Vernon doesn’t trust wizards. As for Harry, this is a Slytherin AU, of course he’s going to play along with his uncle’s plan as long as it benefits him.

23. This is another line from the book

24. Hints that Dean is actually a halfblood and not muggleborn, this is canon too. I’m looking forward to exploring the future “tracking down who my real dad was arc”

25. Originally, I had Harry meet Hermione and her family, but I decided to change it to Dean because I wanted to go down some different avenues. A lot of Slytherin Harry stories have Harry becoming friends with Hermione early on despite their differences and I didn’t want to just do the same thing as everyone else. Also, I really like Dean Thomas’s character he’s a friendly, good natured, brave and loyal. I also think that Harry would get along better with Dean right off the bat than he would with Hermione.

26. Honestly, I think it’s ridiculous that they still use quills and I will be using the trope where Harry sneaks in ballpoint pens.

27. Harry came to Diagon a few days earlier than he did in canon, so I figure it only makes sense that he would meet someone different at Madam Malkins also this gave me a great opportunity to shoe in one of my other favorite characters, Neville.

28. I headcanon that Harry and Neville have a slight magical bond over both being possible options for the prophecy.

29. I admit this is slightly unrealistic, as I’ve dropped my glasses several times before and they’ve never broken but I wanted an excuse to get Harry some new glasses.

30. Not implausible, but also not likely either. Also, I admit I really have no clue about British healthcare, especially not what it was like in the 80s and 90s. I know it’s free, but that there’s also the option to do private or paid care. So, for this story, assume that the Dursleys use private care bc they want to seem better than everyone else.

31. Again, probably not the most realistic scenario, but it is possible. I got glasses when I was 11 and contacts when I was 15, but I definitely could have gotten the contacts when I was a little younger. Maybe not, 11-years old younger, but I don’t think it’s entirely out of the ballpark.

32. I didn’t see any point in changing Hedwig’s name, so I kept it the same.

33. Giving Harry contacts was something that I debated a lot, there’s no real reason he needs them, I just wanted him to have some because they’re convenient. I personally regret not getting contacts earlier.

34. To be honest, this is actually a bit of a cop out on my end because I haven’t figured out the entire political system yet. BUT even if I had, Harry is still 11 so he probably wouldn’t understand it that well anyways. There will be a brief explanation in chapter 2 though.

35. Dudley’s reaction is anything thing I was really torn up about. Because he’s essentially torn between his two parents, sticking with Petunia ostracizes him from Vernon and sticking with Vernon ostracizes him from Petunia. Ultimately, I decided Dudley would value his father’s attention more because while Petunia wouldn’t like him getting involved with magic, she wouldn’t cut Dudley off completely, she loves him too much. But Vernon, has been completely distracted by magic and without Dudley getting involved in it too then he won’t get any attention from his father.

36. According to the HP wiki, Dean’s family actually lives in London, but I wanted it to be more convenient for them to meet so I moved them closer to the Dursleys. Also, I actually did about an hour’s worth of research on google maps trying to find a real place Dean’s family to live.

37. A whole lot of this section with the Weasleys was lifted from the book with slightly different commentary from Harry. I originally had more, but it didn’t add anything so I cut it out.

38. I don’t know how outgoing Ron was before he met Harry, if I was him though I would be too nervous to intrude on a compartment with two other kids who looked like they were already friends.

39. This is not a Ron bashing fic, Harry has no reason to dislike him, so of course he wouldn’t be opposed to sitting with him. That said, for the premise of the story I couldn’t have them sit together because Ron is heavily biased against Slytherin.

40. Poor Draco, if he had just paid more attention to who he was passing in the hall then he would have met Harry, but again, I couldn’t let that happen because Draco’s so obnoxious that he’d turn Harry off Slytherin.

41. Honestly, I just wanted Harry to interact with more students who can be potential friends.

42. Again, and the sorting is lifted from the book. I’m not going to make note of every line.

43. I wasn’t sure if I wanted Neville to be in Hufflepuff of Gryffindor at first. A lot of people argue that Neville needed to be in Gryffindor to learn how to be brave, but I think that Hufflepuff would provide a strong support system that would help Neville gain confidence in himself. Also, I decided that Harry’s words in the robe shop would influence Neville into not thinking that he was a loser if he went to Hufflepuff. I imagine in canon, much like Harry was chanting “not slytherin” Neville was probably chanting “not Hufflepuff”. So I think it’s fitting they both don’t end up in Gryffindor in this fic. Also, Harry already has a Gryffindor friend in Dean, he can use a Hufflepuff friend.
