⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
The world had changed. A lot.
From outside, it still looked the same. Same overpopulated, polluted, big cities. Same forests and oceans and seas. Same desert and mountains. Everything looked the same when it was not. If you looked a little closer, you would notice how the world had slowly changed. Humans were no longer the only dominant species.
It wasn’t that obvious at first. But when you knew where to look, you would notice more magical creatures wandering among humans. Witches, demons, faes, werewolf and so many more. With time, they became more daring and humans, in their pride, were too slow to realize what was going on. Until it was too late.
The cohabitation wasn’t always easy, humans not liking much what was different from them, but then again, they didn’t always notice what was right under their noses. Which was how, you, a little witch, managed to hide your identity for so long. You weren’t ashamed of what you were, far from it. You came from a long line of witches and when the time had come, you chose to fully embrace your heritage. But for the sake of your tranquility, you chose to hide your identity. Nobody knew. Not the people from your school, not the people from your college and even your friends didn’t know about it. There were days, you felt bad about hiding the truth from them, hiding such an important piece of yourself but you couldn’t stop yourself from worrying. Despite being friends for years, what if they couldn’t accept your difference? What if they got scared of you?
There were three kinds of witches in this world. The bad one who used black magic. The one who refused their legacy and lived a normal, human life. And there were witches like you, using magic for good.
With years of training with your mentor, you found out quickly that you were incredibly good at healing people and making potions. But you also found out that you were a walking disaster when it came to summoning. It was funny really. No matter how much you tried, you just sucked at it. Which was also how you befriended a demon going by the name of Yunho. You weren’t supposed to summon a demon. In fact, a good witch shouldn’t get involved with demons. But once again, you were terrible at summoning. Instead of summoning a familiar, you summoned a demon.
“This looks dangerous.” Yunho appeared right beside you and watched you completing the magical circle.
It had been six months since you had summoned him and somehow, he kept coming back. Your mentor had warned you about demons, about their wickedness, about their games, but Yunho was just so friendly, you couldn’t help but befriend him.
“What do you mean it’s dangerous?” Your eyes darted back and forth between your circle and Yunho; confusion written all over your face. You did everything by the book and the circle looked perfect. “It’s a protection circle.”
“It’s definitely not.” He pulled you away from the circle, just to make sure that you wouldn’t start something that would lead to another disaster. He applauded your stubbornness; despite all your failures, you kept trying. But by now, he thought it was clear that you would never manage to master this art. “You should just give up. You need to accept that you’re bad at it. Like really bad.”
If he was trying to upset you, he was doing a rather good job. Irritation pricked at you, ready to share a piece of your mind. Demon or not, you weren’t scared of him and if he wanted a fight, you were eager to deliver.
But apparently, Yunho was cleverer than that. “You should stick to potions and healing. You’re amazing at that.”
Just like that, he cooled you down. Did you mention that you were easy to anger and even easier to calm down?
“You do realize that upsetting a witch isn’t very wise? I can curse you!” You reminded him. Not like you were planning to try your spells on him but he didn’t know that.
Yunho burst into laughter, unfazed with your threat. “Yeah, yeah. Are you going to turn me into a toad?”
“A toad is too pretty for you.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Instead of going back to his business, Yunho stayed the whole afternoon with you, watching you as you prepared different potions. Sometimes he would interrupt your work with his whining, claiming he was bored and it was your duty to entertain him – this usually ended up with you throwing something at him. Sometimes he would hover over your shoulder and watch you mix different ingredients which usually didn’t bother you, but once in a while he got too irritating and you would snap at him.
“Hey, Y/N. I was thinking,” Yunho started
“That’s dangerous.”
Yunho chose to ignore that. His smile was long gone which should have been your clue that this conversation was about to get serious. From your very first meeting, you didn’t get many serious conversations; you had bonded after all because of your light and friendly personalities and because of all the banters.
“I have been meaning to ask for a while now,” Yunho admitted but still hesitated. He didn’t know what words he should use not to hurt you in case it was a sensitive subject. “How come I’ve never seen you with your friends?”
You stilled at his question, avoiding his eyes. “Have you been following me?” You asked instead in hope to avoid answering to his question right away.
“What? No? Yes? A little?” He bit on his lips. “I was just curious about you, that’s it.”
You sighed and stopped preparing the potion. You couldn’t really blame him for being curious. You took seat across from him and tried to clear your mind. The thing with demons, and which was absolutely unfair, was that you could never lie to them, they would know while being the best liars in the world.
“I do have friends.” You started, your friends’ faces popping in your mind. It had been a while since the last time your little band gathered and you had to admit that you missed them. “But as I grew older and chose to embrace my witch’s side, it became harder to keep in touch.”
“Why?”
Such an innocent question and yet so complicated at the same time. “Because they don’t know I’m a witch. Nobody does.” At your confession, Yunho’s face paled. He couldn’t wrap his head around this information. From the little time he had spent with you, he learnt how great you were. Passionate, talented, gentle, too nice for your own good. All those qualities should matter more than the fact that you were a witch.
“It’s not like I’m avoiding them!” You quickly added in panic. You didn’t want him to jump to conclusion. “But it’s easier this way.”
“Y/N, this just doesn’t make sense. Why would you hide something so important from them?” Yunho asked genuinely confused. “What about a lover?”
You wondered what triggered all those questions. First about your friends and now a lover. You could talk about your friends without feeling sad but love? Love was a complicated thing. An emptiness you never managed to fill, no matter how many times you tried.
“It’s complicated.” You paused to look at your hands, I don’t know how to explain it. It’s not like I’m not looking for love. It’s just, whenever I meet a guy, it doesn’t feel right? I can’t seem to connect with men. Maybe something is wrong with me.”
Something was indeed wrong with you. You just didn’t know it yet.
 ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Waking up in the middle of the night wouldn’t be a first. Sometimes it was because you simply couldn’t sleep, sometimes it was because the full moon was having an effect on you. But waking up because all your magic protections rang at the same time? That was new.
You sat on your bed, your senses on alert. Whoever was inside your tiny apartment was making a hella lot of noises as if they were trying to attract your attention on purpose. It wouldn’t be wise to follow the noises, you knew it, but you weren’t weak either, you could deal with whoever the intruder was. You threw the blanket off you and slowly walked towards your door, trying to recognize any voices.
And you did.
“Shit, shit. Don’t fucking die on me, asshole.”
You recognized Yunho right away – your body relaxed instantly, until his words hit you. You opened your door to see what was the problem with him. The sight that welcomed you forced you to stop and gasp in surprise. Yunho didn’t come alone, he was holding another man, trying desperately to stop the bleeding. The moment he saw you, he teared up. “Y/N. Please, please help me.”
“What happened?” You yelled and forced your body to snap out of its trance.
“My friend is wounded and I can’t stop his bleeding. I don’t know anybody else with healing skills. Please.” Yunho begged – he didn’t need to. Seeing him so worried and covered in his friend’s blood was more than enough to convince you to help him.
“Put him on the couch.” You ordered as you quickly got to business. You tied your hair and rolled the sleeves of your shirt before approaching your couch. One look at the man and you knew he was just like Yunho – a demon. It wasn’t because he looked demonic in any way, it was quite the opposite, but the aura surrounding him screamed evil and oddly, pain. “What happened to him?” You glanced at Yunho, quickly assessing him, wondering if he was hurt too.
“We were attacked by hunters. Can’t believe humans found a good enough poison to actually hurt us and prevent our injuries to heal.” Yunho explained, fury slowly filling his voice.
Your mentor had recently told you about the said poison. Without surprise, the one who came up with the poison were the witches who used black magic, witches that hated demons badly enough to wish their extermination. But could this poison be stronger than your healing ability? You were about to find out.
“Leave it to me.” You told Yunho and kneeled on the floor. You grabbed his friend’s hand – a tiny spark went right through you, taking you off guard. That had never happened before. You quickly pushed back the thought for later. “Nobody is dying under my watch.”
Healing always came to you naturally, just like breathing. It was a full part of you and not just something you had learned from your mentor (who did tell you how special you were). You took a deep breath and closed your eyes, concentrating on your energy, wanting your power to spread to your fingertips and then to the demon.
Whenever you were healing someone, you always had this image on mind: a parasite trying to hurt, to eat someone from inside. This time, it was no different. The poison was the parasite and you could picture it, you could see and feel it. It was strong and vicious but so were you. It tried to resist you, to fight back your presence– you smashed it in return.
“Is it working?” Yunho whispered
Because his friend’s clothes were covered with blood, he couldn’t see the result. He couldn’t see how slowly the wounds started stitching itself up, but you felt it all. The wounded demon groaned and arched his back - you never said that the healing process was painless and even unconscious he felt it all.
“Hold him down please.” You ordered and Yunho followed your order, amazed with your skills. He knew you were a good healer but you being able to heal from such a poison - Yunho realized that should someone found out about it, you would be in danger.
His friend fought back some more before finally stilling and letting out a mix of grunt and sigh of relief. It was finally over.
“He’ll be alright, right?” Yunho asked even if he could tell his friend was indeed doing more than fine. Except maybe for his energy, but with a good rest he would be just fine, back to his old self.
“Yes. He needs resting.” You wiped the sweat from your forehead, glanced at the demon on your couch and smiled proudly. You did a hell of good job. You could add to your list of competences: able to heal demons.
“Can I leave him with you for now?” Yunho feared that traveling with him right now would attract unwanted attention on all of them.
Your eyes darted back and forth between Yunho and his friend. Your eyes stayed for a moment on the demon, wondering why he looked so familiar. “Sure. What’s his name?”
“Wooyoung.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Wooyoung had slept through the whole night and day. You checked on him every few hours. Physically, he was doing perfectly fine, no signs of his wounds, not even scars. But apparently, he had exhausted himself mentally which was the main reason he was still not awake.
His presence didn’t bother you, but every time you looked at his face you couldn’t stop yourself from wondering whether you had met him before. It couldn’t be, could it?
It was in the middle of the next night when things changed. You woke up with a feeling that you needed to check on him. You couldn’t explain how or why but you did. Very slowly, you climbed off your bed, grabbed a knitted shawl from a chair and went on tiptoes to the other room.
The room was plunged into darkness except for your little candles who resisted and burnt as brightly as they could around the couch and showed you the demon. From outside, everything looked perfectly normal. He still looked asleep but something felt off to you.
You peeked over him, hands outstretched, wanting to check on him. You did none of that. His eyes snapped opened and he lunged for you. His fingers wrapped tightly around your neck, red bright eyes glowing at you. Yep, no doubt you were dealing with a bloody demon.
Instead of feeling scared for your life, and it was clear he could snap your neck at any moment if he judged you dangerous, you simply stared at him, trying to stay calm, pleading your heart not to betray you - he would hear it, he would feel it.
The candles flames around you flickered in response to his violence, to his dark aura spreading in the room. You could feel it too, it was surrounding you, reaching for you, touching you with invisible hands. At the touch of his power, you jerked. You expected it and yet the familiarity of it took you completely off guard.
“Who are you?” Despite his display of power, you could tell he was confused, disoriented and a tad worried. You were a stranger to him and last time he checked, he was fighting hunters.
“Do you really want to know or are you just going to choke me to death?” You knew this mouth of yours would cause you trouble one day, your mentor had warned you multiples time, Yunho did too. But how could you go against your nature?
Whenever it was because of your words or your voice alone, it had an effect on him. He let go of you and stumbled back, wanting nothing more than to put space between the two of you. What an odd sight; a demon running away.
Wooyoung stared at you, at your face, his breathing heavy. He opened his mouth as if to say something, maybe to apologize for his behavior when clearly all you did was help him – no words left his mouth. Instead, he simply vanished.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Wooyoung was definitely a weird demon. After disappearing without a word, you thought you saw the last of him. You thought that maybe he would send Yunho since apparently, he couldn’t talk to you properly. But he didn’t. But what he did as much more significant to you, much lovelier and so unexpected.
Every morning after the incident, you found different gifts of his appreciation for what you did for him. From flowers with a “thank you” note, to freshly made coffee, to your favorite donuts, to rare herbs for your potions. It could have been worrisome, but to you, it was endearing. Wooyoung made sure you never found traces of him; he would just drop the little present and vanish from your place before you could talk to him. This part was a little annoying. Did you, somehow, manage to scare him? You really wanted to have a proper conversation with him and thank him. He didn’t need to bring you gifts every day.
To make sure he wouldn’t be able to avoid you, you made an extra effort to get up earlier than you had ever done. The sun wasn’t even up but you could feel it would be a lovely day. You opened your windows widely, inhaling the freshness of the morning – a big smile spread on your lips. Yes, it would be a good day.
While preparing a breakfast, you kept glancing at the clock on the wall – when would the demon show up? Would he at all? You hoped he would.
And he did. Wooyoung appeared in your living room with a fresh bouquet of flowers. Thinking he was discrete and unseen which made you smile.
“Hi Wooyoung.” You called for him, startling him.
Wooyoung turned to face you, very slowly, caught like a deer in headlights. “Hi?”
Now that he had completely recovered and didn’t look so panicked, he looked so young and had an almost childish glint in his eyes – such a contrast to the last time you saw him. The way he scratched the back of his head, clearly embarrassed with being caught, was adorable.
“Have breakfast with me?”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
Lately, you had been having the strangest dreams. Being a witch, it wasn’t so uncommon, but those ones unsettled you. It was almost the same every night. The same voice, the same feelings. Every time you tried to remember who was in the dream, you simply couldn’t. The only thing you could, however, remember about the person was the familiar, sweet voice calling you ‘doll’. Those dreams were always intense and confusing; it seemed to you that whoever was in your dream, was important, someone you deeply cared for.
This morning, however, you woke up, your heart heavy and your body aching with need. You sat on your bed, mind running wild as clear images from your dream still replayed in your head. It was a first – you remembered who this voice belonged to. You remembered clearly who was in your dream.
“Don’t think I don’t want you, doll.” He grabbed your hips, grip so tight you were sure it would leave a bruise. He pressed you harder against him, making you feel him, making you understand just how much he wanted you. He was hard. Damn hard. You couldn’t stop yourself from moving, grinding against him.
Wooyoung’s eyes turned red as a groan escaped his lips. “Doll.”
Despite his warning, he didn’t stop you. He watched your every move, every little whimper that left your pretty parted lips. He watched the way you closed your eyes to enjoy the friction and how slowly you were losing yourself. It took him all his willpower not to flip you, get rid of those clothes and just pound into you until you were begging him to let you come.
“You’ll be the death of me, doll.”
Wooyoung. You had been dreaming all this time about him. You were happy to finally remember but it also left you incredibly confused. Yes, he was just as nice as Yunho, you found out more about him after the breakfast together, but was it enough to make you long for him? Was it enough to make your heart ache and wish for more? What a mess.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“You really managed to finish all the potions?” Your mentor asked, pleasantly surprised, as you opened the door to your place for her.
“Yes. It took me longer than I thought it would though.” You admitted. Thanks to Wooyoung, you found all the ingredients you needed for the required potion, you couldn’t thank him enough for his help.
Your mentor shook her head, amazed. “I’m impressed. The brewing process for this potion is the hardest part.” Not to you, but you chose not to comment.
Your mentor halted, her eyes fixed on something (or someone) by your window. You tilted your head to follow her gaze only to see Wooyoung smiling wickedly at your mentor. Oh no. You were definitely about to get scolded.
“Y/N. Why is there another demon at your place? Did you try another summoning spell?” Your mentor asked without looking at you, her eyes glued to Wooyoung just in case he would try something funny. He was tempted. He really was, but one stern look from you was enough to dissuade him.
“No, I didn’t.” Well, that was completely true. You did want to try another summoning but Yunho stopped you from causing more trouble to the world. She didn’t need to know that.
Your mentor extended her hand, deciding that Wooyoung had nothing to do here. Your body acted on its own, standing between her and him. You smiled apologetically at her. “He’s a friend, please don’t hurt him.”
Wooyoung snorted at your plea which earnt him a stinky eye from you while your mentor’s frown deepened at your words. It was becoming a habit for you to befriend demons and she wasn’t very fond of it, not when at any times those creatures could stab you in your back.
“You can’t be friends with another demon, Y/N! How many times did I tell you-“ And here came the scolding you were waiting for.
What could you say in your defense? You believed everybody deserved a chance, even demons. After all, weren’t some witches just as bad as them? Weren’t some humans just as bad? Why wouldn’t Wooyoung deserve a chance to prove them all wrong?
“I don’t believe they’re all bad, that’s all.” You confessed and glanced at Wooyoung, giving him a comforting smile. “They’re wicked and mischievous, I admit it, but in a very lovely way.” At least, your description fit Wooyoung.
“I don’t know how I feel about being called lovely.” He chuckled, feeling like he should definitely feel offended being so underestimated, but at the same time, those words came from you, and it meant more than he wished to admit.
“Oh, Y/N,” Your mentor sighed and shook her head in disapproval. “You’re too trusting.”
To that, Wooyoung completely agreed.
“You’re too good for this world.”
He agreed once more. Maybe this witch wasn’t so bad after all. At least, they had the same opinion on you.
“You better watch out, demon.” Your mentor warned him. “If you hurt her in any way, I’ll haunt you down.”
“I’m terrified.” He mocked, fearless. But what he wanted to say, deep inside, was “I’ll burn before I let anything happen to her.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“Do you think he would morn you?”
His hold on your neck tightened a little more, bringing tears to your eyes. You were going to die, there was no way you could escape him, not even if you tried. You whimpered at the pain as breathing was getting almost impossible. A little voice inside your head asked you to beg him to stop but you wouldn’t. It wouldn’t do you any good.
But just when you thought you were done for, a miracle happened: your necklace started shining brightly. The demon’s attention suddenly was not on you but on the necklace, eyes widening in shock. Just like Wooyoung’s before, he seemed to be familiar with it; he quickly let go of you and took few steps back, his eyes darting back and forth between his wounded hand and you.
“The fuck.” He growled, outraged that what seemed to be an easy target, wasn’t that easy to kill in the end. “Why do you have this?”
Too stunned to speak, you simply stared at his hand and pressed yourself a little harder against the wall in hope it would swallow you whole. You needed to get the hell out of here. You silently thanked your grandmother for the gift, if it wasn’t for her, you realized, you would be dead.
“Answer me!” He ordered, impatient, his rage growing stronger with every passing seconds.
Despite your state, despite the fear slowly eating you alive, you forced your body to move, to try to get away from him – you pushed yourself from the wall and run without looking back. Fortunately for you, your prayers had been answered: Wooyoung appeared in the middle of the room, a deep frown on his face. He opened his arms widely and caught you. The moment his familiar and comforting scent hit your nose, you felt your body giving up, falling in his arms, shaking.
“Y/N.” He whispered and tightened his hold around you. He didn’t need to observe you to know you were terrified and a quick glance at the other demon in the room made it all clear as to why. “The fuck you’re doing here, Hongjoong?”
“Y/N! Wake up!!” Wooyoung’s worried voice brought you back from another dream or more like nightmare.
Your eyes snapped opened, you were panting, your heart roaring in your ears. That dream was something else. There was nothing lovely about it, all you felt was fear and anguish.
It took you a moment to calm down, to recover from the overwhelming sensation – Wooyoung stayed by your side, sitting on your bed, stroking your hair as if it was the most normal thing to do. It became a habit, to visit you whenever he wanted, most of the time unannounced. Tonight, however, you felt particularly grateful for it.
“I’m fine.” You whispered; your voice barely audible.
“You’re clearly not.” Wooyoung protested softly, trying not to rush you into telling him what was wrong. But he was dying to know. The moment he got to your place; he felt your magic going wild in your room. He felt your fear and heard loud and clear your tiny whimpers.
He was right, you were not fine. You didn’t understand why you kept dreaming about Wooyoung. You didn’t understand why those dreams felt like they weren’t just dreams but more like memories. It was absurd. Yet, it made you pause. Being a witch also meant, nothing was impossible.
You looked at Wooyoung – he was watching you like a hawk, with a frown on his face, he was clearly worried for you. ‘Why does it bother you so much?’ you wanted to ask him. You weren’t that close; he had no reason to show concern. But maybe, just like you, he felt this familiarity that was between you two.
“Who’s Hongjoong?” You finally asked, remembering the face of the man that haunted your nightmare.
Wooyoung immediately let go of you as if your question had burnt him. Clearly, he knew the man which also meant that the nightmare wasn’t just another dream.
You watched him closely, wondering if he would try to lie, if he would answer you.
“Hongjoong is a friend, both mine and Yunho’s.” He finally admitted. Despite him telling the truth, he avoided your eyes; there was more to the story, you could tell but Wooyoung didn’t seem ready to share it with you.
Why?
———
Did you mention you were stubborn? You probably did. Yunho had probably repeated a hundred times too. So did your mentor. Which was exactly why you found yourself on the floor of your room with all the windows opened, candles lit all around the room while you were trying to complete the summoning circle. It had been bugging you a lot for the past few days that out of all the witches you knew, you were the only one who weren’t able to summon a familiar. It shouldn’t have been a big deal, but it was.
You glanced at your book then checked back your circle. Out of all your attempt, this one felt the best, felt right. You could do it, you felt it deep inside you.
“Heard you’re terrible at summoning.” Wooyoung’s sudden appearance didn’t even surprise you. He just did whatever he wanted and oddly, you got used to it. Not only you, but also your magic. Whenever he would appear, your magic felt it way before you could hear or see him. Another odd thing to add to your list.
“One of these days, I’m going to turn Yunho into something ugly.” You groaned to yourself. Of course, he would share embarrassing information about you. But Wooyoung wasn’t mocking you. Far from it. He looked curious as he glanced at your circle and then back at your book, studying it.
“Can I?” He asked for your chalk.
Now, that took you off guard. You handed him the chalk and watched him add some lines to your circle, checked once more the book and then nodded, satisfied. You were completely mesmerized with the man. He could have chosen the same path as your mentor and Yunho but no, he chose to help you and to believe in you – your heart fluttered.
“I believe, now it should work.” Wooyoung turned to look at you, wide smile on his face. “Come on.”
With Wooyoung’s support and belief, you felt even more determined. You closed your eyes and started reciting the words, you knew now by heart. The candles around you burnt brighter, stronger; you felt it even with your eyes closed. Magic was everywhere, answering to your call. It was so different from your past attempt. It felt different from when you had summoned Yunho too.
Wooyoung gasped by your side as tiny yet bright lights gathered in the middle of the circle until it took shape and finally revealed itself.
“You should open your eyes, doll.” Wooyoung’s voice was filled with fondness and adoration, but all you noticed was the petname. The same one you had been dreaming about.
You chose not to react to the name, no matter how much you wanted and instead opened your eyes. There, in the middle of the circle stood a tiny, fluffy, white fox, with red eyes and a red moon crescent mark on his forehead.
“Oh my god.” You couldn’t believe it. You did. You really did. You stared at the tiny, fluffy thing, stars in your eyes. “I did it!!” You lifted it from the floor, bringing the fox closer to your face, pure adoration in your eyes. “Hello, little friend!”
The little fox sniffed you before licking your nose as a way of greeting you. Just like that it had won your heart. Not that it was a hard thing to do, obviously, but still. You pressed the fox against your chest, close to your heart.
“Thank you for coming to me.” You whispered to it, tearing up. You were just so happy, so overwhelmed. Your efforts, your patience had paid off.
“Adorable.” You heard Wooyoung’s comment, thinking he was talking about the little fox, but as you looked at him, you realized his eyes were on you and not on your familiar. You blushed at his attention, at the tenderness in his eyes.
“Thank you for your help, Wooyoung. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.”
“You’re wrong. You had everything you needed to succeed.”
Sweet, you thought as he tried to praise you when really, he was the one who completed the circle, who noticed the missing tiny details. But you accepted his words, gratitude welling up inside you. You put your little new friend on the floor and moved closer to Wooyoung instead.
“Thank you.” You said and kissed his cheek.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
When Minji and Sunhee told you they would come to your town for a little weekend together, you were delighted. It had been a while since the last time the three of you met and you had to admit that you were missing your girls.
The very first night, the three of you chose to go to a bar, nothing better than to have a drink and catch up. Especially from their side. There wasn’t much that had changed in your life after all. No, that wasn’t completely true. You had now two demons in your life and a tiny familiar who spent every minute of your life with you. You also, although you were still half in denial, developed a tiny crush on one of those said demons.
“You should really visit us next time!” Minji said, excited. “It’s another life waiting for you!”
Eunhee nodded her head in agreement. “You might even like it. It would be so nice if the three of us lived in the same town like we used to!”
You appreciated their enthusiasm but you couldn’t imagine yourself leaving this town.
Eunhee and Minji exchanged a knowing look at your silence. Minji put her elbows on the table and rested her head in her hands, smiling wickedly at you. “Unless, you don’t want to leave because you have someone dear here.”
“Are you hiding something from us, Y/N?” Eunhee added, voice sweet, looking like an angel when really, her eyes told you another story.
Instead of thinking about the fact that you were hiding what you really were – you thought about Wooyoung. Wooyoung and his smiles and his sweetness and affection.
“Oh, oh, she’s blushing.” Minji teased and she was right, you were definitely blushing.
You cleared your throat and grabbed your now empty glass. “I’ll be right back.”
“Don’t run away!” Minji yelled after you, “We’re not done!”
You knew they weren’t, but if you were about to talk about your, clearly, tiny crush on Wooyoung, without mentioning the fact that he was a demon – you needed a drink and possibly a stronger one than a beer.
“Another beer and a shot of vodka, please.” You ordered and smiled to the bartender.
A man chuckled to your left. “Now that’s an odd mix.”
You checked the man beside you and the color drained out of your face at the sight of him. You knew this man. Not personally, obviously, but you recognized him from your nightmare. First Wooyoung and now him. You were, clearly, missing a piece of the puzzle – there was no way it was a coincidence. Not anymore.
“I know you.” You stated, your body went cold with dread. What was he doing here? What did he want? There were so many questions running through your mind.
The man didn’t sound surprise nor worried, instead his smile widened. He arched a brow, amused. “Do you?”
“Hongjoong.”
“It’s been a while, Y/N.” It was a little disconcerting to see him out of your dreams and even more to see him so relaxed and smiling at you. There was no malice in his voice, in fact, he sounded genuine which confused you even more.
“Who are you?” His reply came in the form of flash of red in his eyes. “Oh.” Another bloody demon. You slumped in the chair next to his and let a long and tired sigh. “I’m so confused.”
The bartender chose this moment to push the shot of vodka along with your beer to you. Hongjoong was faster than you, he took the shot of vodka before you could grab it and emptied it for you.
“Hey!” You protested; you needed this drink more than he did. “Rude.”
“You’ll thank me later.”
“I doubt it.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
When your mentor suggested for you to come to her countryside house, you said yes right away. You had heard many things about the place and especially about the forest and all the rare plants and herbs you could find. You had made your research and had done a list of things you hoped to find and bring back to your place. To say that you were excited for this little trip would be the understatement of the century.
It also happened to be an opportunity to show Mister Fluffy, your little fox to your mentor. She had observed him for a moment which made you uneasy. Was there something wrong?
“He’s an unusual one.” She had finally said, patted your back and smiled. “Unique, I suppose, like his master.”
Her countryside house was everything you had expected it to be, knowing your mentor’s taste. It was old, made mainly of woods, the front fully covered with ivy, with a lovely patio - it was cozy and you liked it instantly. There was just something familiar and comforting about this place. Maybe it was because of the forest and all the magic around the house or maybe it was all because of the house.
After bringing your bag to your room, there was still some time left before dinner which gave you the opportunity to explore. You wandered through the forest, eyes scanning every bush, every tree, every herbs – you came here with the goal to gather enough rare herbs to test new potions.
“This place is just amazing.” You beamed in happiness, excited like a kid. But the best was yet to come. The moment your feet led you to the lake, you stopped and held your breath. The view was just so magical, so beautiful, you couldn’t believe it was so close to the house. It was definitely the perfect place to live for someone like you.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Wooyoung appeared by your side, hands in his pockets, he admired the view with you.
“Yeah.” You agreed. You pivoted to Wooyoung and quirked a brow. “Are you following me?”
“I was bored.” He shrugged as if it was nothing, as if his boredom explained everything. He was smiling at first, but when he averted his eyes from your face and looked back at the lake, his smile slowly faded. “This place is still as special as in my memories.”
It was so strange seeing him so calm, so lost in his thoughts, in his memories; sadness clouded his features. It was so out of character, it made you pause. “What’s wrong?”
But Wooyoung ignored your question and instead walked closer to the lake. You followed him in silence, observing him. But more you looked at him and more your heart clenched for him. You wanted to see him smile. You wanted to erase whatever was bothering him.
Before you could stop yourself, you took his hand and gave it a comforting squeeze. “Wooyoung?”
He blinked, confused. He looked at you and then at his hand. “Sorry. This place brings back some memories.”
“Bad one?”
“No.” He chuckled to himself, “Good ones, actually.”
You had a hard time believing that. If those memories were so good, why did he look so devastated? Why was he trying to hide it? “Then, why do you look so sad?”
Wooyoung should have known that you would notice it. He should have known that following you to this place was not a good idea. But he couldn’t help himself. “Sometimes, I just miss the past.”
“I can relate.” You hummed and leaned even closer, hoping that your presence alone could ease his mind. “But living in the past prevents you from enjoying the present. Don’t you think?”
Wooyoung felt lost. Your words, your gentle touch, your presence – it was slowly driving him crazy. You looked so sweet, so worried, so gentle, so tempting; his eyes darted back and forth between your eyes and your lips.
“What’s on your mind?” You asked even if deep inside you already knew. You wanted to hear him say it.
Wooyoung took a deep breath and gently grabbed your chin, tilting it up. “What if I tell you that the demon in me really wants to kiss you right now?”
You bit on your lips to prevent a smile, but your reaction only made Wooyoung’s grip on your chin to tighten. He was fighting back the urge to pounce on you, you could feel it.
“I’d ask, what do you want?”
“Can I kiss you?”
Your reply came in the form of a gentle press of your lips against his, making him smile. “Yeah.”
How could he resist someone as sweet and addicting as you? There was absolutely no way. Wooyoung wrapped his arm around you and pulled your body against his, lightly lifting you from the ground as he claimed your mouth, pouring all his emotions in the kiss, hoping you could feel just how much he wanted you. And you did. As you wrapped your arms around his neck, you let all your emotions out.
It was such a weird experience. For years, you had thought there was something wrong with you. You thought there was just no man in the world that could make you feel whole, that could make your heart beat crazily. But maybe, all this time, you didn’t need a simple man but a demon. Because Wooyoung felt right. Whatever it was between the two of you and no matter how much it was frown upon, it felt perfect.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
You had to agree on something with your mentor: it was becoming a habit for a demon to show up at your place, usually unannounced. Except that this time it wasn’t Yunho or Wooyoung. Hongjoong was reading one of your old spell books, looking incredibly bored.
“You got to be kidding me.” You muttered to yourself as you dropped your bags on the table. “What are you doing here, Hongjoong?”
“Interesting book. Mind if I borrow it?” He gestured with the book.
What was he even thinking, you wondered. The spells in this book could only work if a witch was using it, why would he bother. But Hongjoong was a mystery that you weren’t too eager to figure out.
“Would it be even useful to you?” You asked instead.
“You’d be surprised.” He shut the book, put it back on the shelf and then whirled around to face you. He eyed you from head to toe, sniffing. “You have Wooyoung’s scent on you.”
Whatever you had expected from Hongjoong’s presence at your place, it was definitely not this. Your face heat up at his words, realizing that he could probably guess what had happened between the two of you with just one sniff.
Hongjoong’s smile only widened at your lack of words. “I’m not surprised.”
“Why?” He needed to stop being so damn confusing. You barely knew the demon, but he kept messing with your head.
“How much do you remember?”
“What?”
“From your past life.”
You looked at his as if he was a madman. “What are you even talking about?”
“You knew my name, yet, we have never met. Not in this life at least.”
And his words made so much sense. All those dreams, all the familiarity you felt whenever it was with Wooyoung or with Hongjoong, you understood it better now.
You sat on your couch, hands on your knees, you stared at them, thinking about those dreams, thinking about Hongjoong’s words. “You tried to kill me.”
To your utter surprise, he didn’t deny it. “I did.” He inched closer and stopped before you, towering over you. “But back then, I knew nothing about you. And definitely nothing about Wooyoung’s feelings.”
It dawned on you that if everything was real, then Wooyoung knew who you were from the moment he woke up at your place. No wonder he was keeping you company so often.
“He-“
“He’s been waiting for you for a very long time, Y/N.” Hongjoong shared. He crouched down to be at your level. He took your hands and squeezed them. “I didn’t think your path would cross again but they did.”
“Are you going to stop us?”
“No.”
“Then, why are you here?”
Hongjoong observed you for a moment before letting go of your hands and pulling a tiny bottle from his pocket. “I found something that will help you to remember everything. If you want to of course.”
You stared at the bottle, amazed that Hongjoong had already a solution to your problem. You would have eventually looked for something, a spell, a potion, anything that could help you to remember but he was faster. You took the bottle from him, gripping it tightly as if your life depended on it.
“Thank you.”
Hongjoong grinned. “I’ll see you around, Y/N.”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“Hi, doll.” Wooyoung whispered to your sleeping figure. He outstretched his hand, wanting nothing more than touch your face, to feel your warmth once more but halted. You were so close, yet so far. “I know, I have no right to say it now but hell, I missed you. So much.”
“I’m sorry for leaving you. I won’t ask for your forgiveness, but know that I’m sorry.” Wooyoung had never cried in his life, not even when it broke his heart leaving you, but now that he was finally confessing, letting everything out, tears were slowly gathering in the corner of his eyes. “I watched over you for a while – I just couldn’t let go. But when I saw you rebuilding your life, I knew I had to let go, to give you the space you needed to completely forget about me.”
“As if I could ever forget about you, asshole.” You muttered as you slowly opened your eyes and looked at him.
Startled, Wooyoung almost jumped from the bed and ran for his life. Ironic, considering he used to be the one scaring you.
Even in your state, you managed a chuckle. “Did I scare the mighty demon?”
“Nope.” Wooyoung cleared his throat. “Ok, maybe a little.”
“What took you so long?” You complained, “Do you know how hard I’ve been trying to hold back? I expected to see you sooner – especially since I saw Hongjoong.”
“You saw Hongjoong?”
“He thought he was being discrete or maybe he thought I was too old to notice, to remember.”
Wooyoung snickered at that and took note to remind Hongjoong to never underestimate a human. Even an old lady as yourself.
“Hey, Wooyoung. Do me a favor? Next time we meet, and I know we’ll meet again. Don’t be a coward and stay with me hm?”
Those words were all he needed to let his tears fall free. He took your hand and brought it to his lips, kissing your knuckles one last time.
“I promise.”
You woke up gasping and panting; all the memories hit you all at once. Your past, your family, your friends, your love that you had carried all your life, the end. Wooyoung who had loved you so deeply. Wooyoung who made such a silly promise to you – a promise he had kept. Tears were running down your cheeks and there was no stopping them.
You threw the blanket off you and climbed off the bed. You had to see him, now. You wanted to face him, to tell him you remembered. You couldn’t imagine how it was for him to see you so often, to hold you and yet being unable to fully make you his.
You wiped your tears. You probably looked like a mess but it didn’t really matter. You grabbed your book and your chalk and started drawing a circle. Fortunately for you, your memory was good and you remembered clearly the messed-up circle you had used to summon Yunho. You could do it again and summon Wooyoung instead.
“What are you doing?” Wooyoung’s voice startled you. You whirled around, so shocked seeing him before you could even try the summoning. He tilted his head to the side, curious with your disheveled look and your puffy eyes. “Hold on. What happened? Who made you cry?”
But his question only brought tears back to your eyes. Seeing him so concerned for you made your heart both ache and flutter.
“Wooyoung.” You sniffed, trying to stop your tears, trying to stop looking like a sad child but you just couldn’t.
He reached out for you and pulled you in his arms. “Hey, what’s wrong?” But you cried only more. “Come on, doll. Tell me. Who do I need to beat up?”
You laughed through your tears. Of course, he would fight whoever dared making you cry. You pulled from his arms, only to cup his face and pinch his cheeks, making him whine. “You’re still so adorable.” And pecked his lips. “Still so human.” And another peck. “For a demon.”
To say that Wooyoung was confused would be an understatement. You went from crying to laughing, to treating him like a kid. There was obviously something going on with you.
“I’m sorry for making you wait so long.”
Wooyoung blinked, once, twice. He opened his mouth and closed again, until it hit him. Your words, your odd behavior. You remembered. Finally, you remembered. Happiness trembled inside of him.
“Y/N, you-“
You got on your tiptoes and placed a kiss on his lips.
“Thank you for keeping your promise.”

Given Scar’s win, do you think it’s worse to live alone for the rest of your life or to die after coming so far?
Is death after winning a blessing or a curse?
Is being allowed to live a reward or a punishment?

Let’s just all remember that “My Beloved Maraclea” was written on the back of the Jack of Spades card. You know, the one that symbolized the union of Alex and Nigel for eternity.
In case anyone still wants to argue about who the Maraclea should have been. *cough not Susan cough*

For Eternity - Small Hours
“Is she asleep as she should be?” Gaia asked the nanny as she stepped out of the room.
“Oh the girl is as stubborn as ever!” The nanny griped, stomping a hoof. “She INSISTED on staying awake until you returned! No wonder she hasn't healed from her ailment yet!”
The monarch smiled warmly. “I figured as much. You are excused, Madam Throw. I shall put her to bed.”
Gaia tapped on the doors three times, then gently pushed them open. “Proving your mischief once again, Little Serene Remedy? You ought to know better by now!”
“Eve!” The filly on the bed exclaimed, kicking her hooves under the covers in eagerness. “Gosh! You took FOREVER! What did that Oracle pony have to say?? Are you going on a grand dangerous quest? If so, can I come?!”
“Oh I wouldn't think somepony in your condition would make such a journey if there was one. Little fillies like you are already long asleep.” Gaia calmly lectured, dragging the blanket back over Remedy.
“Isn't that what you love most about me?” Remedy tilted her head curiously. “That I'm not like most other fillies?” she kicked the blanket back off.
Gaia giggled “Well, absolutely! But you're also notorious for these sick bouts, and you need your rest.” This time the monarch tucked the comforter under the mattress.
Remedy groaned. “Awwww! I can't sleep now! You GOTTA tell me what the Oracle pony said!”
“That can all wait until tomorrow, young lady.” Gaia scolded, turning to pick up a small bottle. “Now, I see you have not taken your medicine yet.”
The filly scrambled under the covers. “Noooooo!”
“Come now. Do you enjoy feeling so under the weather?”
“....no.”
“Then be a big girl and come out.”
“....fine.” Remedy obeyed, crawling back up.
Gaia took a spoon, and floated it over to the filly. “Say ‘aaaaaaaaah’!” She made a silly face.
“.....aaaaaaaa–EUGH!” Remedy soured. She locked her own mouth shut with great effort, trying hard to not spit it out.
Gaia shook her head. “Such a dramatic filly. What are we going to do with you? Now get some rest.”
“Eve, wait.” Remedy grabbed at her hoof on the bed. “Can you tell me what the Oracle pony looked like at least? Were they super mysterious?”
The older pondered. “Well…yes. They were. But they were no pony.”
“Huh?”
“It was an Abyssinian Catfolk.” Gaia explained.
The little filly’s eyes sparkled in intrigue. “A catfolk?! How tall were they? You can't leave with just that!”
Gaia sighed. “I shall tell you all the details at the crack of dawn. Is that a good middle ground?”
Remedy pondered. “I suppose that's fair…can we walk in the garden? I want to see the flowers bloom.”
The monarch chuckled. “Sounds wonderful.”
——————————
Queen Gaia Eve spent the rest of her night on her balcony, motionless and waiting for the sun to rise, wondering if it really might be for the last time one day soon.
“It's funny to hear how the life you know will end. It was so ominous, so mysterious, so vague….” She wondered to herself.
Not a day went by as the years rolled on the Oracle's message didn't ring in her head.
But she couldn't let it dwindle for long inside
Gaia had her royal duties to carry out.
Little Remedy grew up fast--before Gaia knew it she made plans to travel.
But Gaia stayed here in the castle….awaiting her future.
