River Song returns from the dead

Alex Kingston stars in The Death and Life of River Song, a brand-new series of full-cast audio dramas, coming soon from Big Finish Productions. 

An archaeologist from the 52nd century, born and raised to be an assassin, destined to marry her intended target, and to have many of her own adventures too – Professor River Song’s very messy timeline began (or maybe ended) when she first appeared in the 2008 Doctor Who TV episode Silence in the Library. 

Since then, Alex Kingston has reprised the role of River numerous times for Big Finish Productions, including in her own series, The Diary of River Song, which ran from 2015 to 2023. And, starting in August 2024, she will carry on the role in a brand-new series, The Death and Life of River Song. 

The first box set in the series, Last Words, is written by Robert Valentine. It begins with River, after settling down to an afterlife in the Library’s computer core, finding herself waking up in Earth’s future, her consciousness having been temporarily transferred to a new body. 

Alex Kingston said: “We have gone post-Library! We’ve done another episode in the past where I was within the database, which I loved, and I thought that’s the only way you could go forward with River, given her situation. So, I was actually really surprised when this box set came my way, and that we are now so far advanced in the history of Earth that she is able to be brought out as data and put into a cloned body. So very, very clever!” 

Producer David Richardson added: “When every single day during the recording, your leading actress says “This script is brilliant”, you know you’re onto a good thing. Even better, at the end of the last day, Alex popped the script in her bag and announced that she loved Last Words so much she was taking it home to keep and treasure.” 

The Death and Life of River Song: Last Words is now available for pre-order exclusively here, either as a collector’s edition four-CD box set, for £29.99, or as a digital download, for £22.99 per volume.   

Big Finish listeners can also pre-order a bundle with Last Words as well as Volumes 2 and 3 of The Death and Life of River Song, which are both due for release in 2025, for just £80 (collector’s edition CDs + downloads) or £66 (downloads only).

I’m just not that crazy about the triplets, but if you’re a triplet stan, you’ll be sure to have a blast with this one!

Translator’s note: This CD has been mentioned so many times to me as the elusive ‘Shuu works as a cashier’ CD and finally I got the chance to translate it! Up till now, only a short sample clip was circling the internet, but one of my wonderful followers purchased the CD and shared the audio with me. uwu Even though this CD doesn’t have a lot of my favorite (aside from Shuu), I still enjoyed it a lot! It was so much fun to imagine the absolute chaos breaking loose as these 5 Vampires try to run a convenience store.

  H: Huh...? The gym isnt open? K:mmm... H:... oh a text message! Tanaka-san!...overslept...he said he has the key and to wait a sec. K: mmmmkay.

[birds chirping]

H: hey Kageyama. K: Huh? H: You know how after morning practice you have second breakfast? K: Yeah. H: Even then, when it gets to second period I get super hungry. K: u-huh... H:But if you bought extra and ate every period you'd get stupidly sleepy right? K:Mmm. H:But then if you didnt bring extra and anded up eating lunch early...y-you get what I mean right!? K:Yeah. H: After school is just empty stomach hell!What am I supposed to do about it!? If I hold back from eating lunch early I just spend periods 3 and 4 thinking about my lunch! When I think, 'oh, its been about 10minutes' and I look a the clock only 30 seconds have passed!! [silence]

K: Protein shakes...I discussed it with coach Ukai H: ...wha- and he said that protien is okay!? K: In order to keep your body from feeling hungry, your body supplements itself with energy, meaning you could possibly lose muscle. H: What did you say!? K:If you drink protein shakes and consume carbohydrates, it'll elimiate energy loss. H:I see! K:You blood glucose level doesn't go up either so you wont get sleepy. H: Whhaaaat! I-I'm going to do that too! Me too! That's right, preotien shakes seemed like a post practice thing! I'm going to do it too! K: You can make it with easily with just water and the powder. H:Shaking and drinking the protein shake during break seems pretty cool! I what should I do... maybe I'll drink it next to someone eating junk food! "Hey, you still eating junk food? I've graduated from junk food. Of course there are times when I want to have a chocolate or two. But, you know, I'm an 'athelete'," K: I feel like smashing a ball into your face. H: Why!? K: ...what flavor do you normally drink. H:Chocolate! K:Huh... H:...what about you!? K:[smirks] Like. H:...nngghh...y-you... K: What? H: Y-your're just trying to be cool! K: Huh!? What I've been listening to ★part 1:

Hey there! I hope you’re all keeping safe. Due to life and things, I was out of the loop regarding the otome community and releases, however due to determination to pursue my old hobbies I'm trying to get back into the swing of things because otome CDs are a fun way to pass time or partake in fantasy immersion when the going gets tough! While I haven’t made any big purchases in a while, I’ve been keeping up with some VAs on Youtube and thought I’d share what I’ve been listening to. There’s also a mini CD review☆

Here's a short list of some of the Youtubers who do 音フェチ (literally means sound fetish but I believe this is just how ASMR is referred to in casual Japanese) or drama situations that I’m currently into. The content and links are nsfw or may be triggering, so please exercise caution when reading The list contains both native English and Japanese speakers. 

SeikyuuVA (English)

Going through SeikyuuVAs catalog made me delay actually writing this properly for about an hour, every upload is worth checking out!  He uploads ASMR and full-fleshed situation dramas. His vocal range (and situations!) range from sweet and light hearted-boy-next door to more explicit, throaty and extremely dominant styles. 

Another thing that pulled me into his channel is that he will do immersive situations with the listener as various “anime husbands” so if you have a favorite character you want to hear brought to life, you're in for a treat. I believe he's American or Canadian, though a fun thing he does is throw in Japanese セリフ(dialogue) which is lovely for those of us who have a kink for accents and foreign languages. His sfw audios are also wonderful! I have to add that he incorporates lots of background noises into his work that makes his recordings that much more immersive without being overwhelming or overpowering his lines! 

Seikyuu uploads his recordings onto Youtube, but it’s possible to buy nsfw versions on DLsite or support him on patreon as well! I was so enamored with his voices and style that I had to make a Patreon to support him.

Ryou Sasaki (Japanese)

His voice is so 萌えit hurts. Actually, his online persona is so sugary and sweet and a welcome addition to what I normally listen to! His voice reminds me of Yuki Kaji, or a younger friend you just wanna give head pats to!! Ryou Sasaki primarily uploads ASMR videos based on various boyfriend x listener scenarios, though he also is active on twitch and does gaming livestreams. I think it's fun how he isn't afraid to express a fondness for cute things, though whether that is just his personality or due to how prevalent “kawaii culture” is in japan, idk! It may sound weird, but I like the breathiness that Ryou Sasaki’s voice carries, if that makes sense?? (w) like in the same vein as Ariana Grande’s speaking voice, haha. Most of his work on his YouTube channel are sfw, though a few are a little ~spicy~

For those who enjoy roleplays by performers who have a light and fluffy voice, he's your guy.

A voice actor on Youtube I've recently just subscribed to! His earliest posting is from six months back but he has already amassed 12k followers which seems to be a testament of his talents.  I'm still going through their channel, but I can already tell you that he takes a lot of care in the crafting of his recordings~ Also uses 3D audio! His uploads consist on immersive ASMR recordings involving the listener as well. but he’s also a talented artist and posts narrated speed drawings. 

Recommended audio ★ TW: Yandere and associated themes (boiiiiii I I love yanderes and this was the best English voice yandere I’ve heard in a minute, couldn't stop smiling listening to this. The situation was incredibly creepy (in a good way!!)  and realistic with excellent bgm and sfx.

This is the second in a series revolving around male nurses who are all yandere. I purchased this CD late last year and actually lost access to the account that had this downloaded (rip) but from memory I can recall that I enjoyed this CD. The story involves you, a patient in a hospital and a male nurse who's fallen for you while treating you. He comes to you while you're sleeping, professes his love for you, and it then it gets more explicit. I do recall the initial encounter being non-con, so please exercise caution when listening. There’s also no sparring on the l e w d sound effects. I really like how polite and soft spoken the nurse is and then his switch to loony-tunes, screechy voice scary boi that’s so characteristic in yandere, though it never gets old.

WHAT THIS?

The Homer They Fall Season 8 - Episode 3 | November 10, 1996 Fun fact: this episode aired one night after the Mike Tyson Evander Holyfield fight where Tyson bit part of Holyfield’s ear off. It is, to this day, the only boxing match I have ever watched. Back in my day cable television would block out premium channels, pay-per-view, and porn channels by distorting the signal via analog means, and in order to unscramble them you had to either pay your cable company for the privilege or go to Mexico and buy an illegal device that simply unscrambled everything for you. My friend’s family had such a box and invited a bunch of people over to watch the fight. I tried what I thought was a MST3K-style joke: “next week Mike Tyson will be fighting Steve Urkel”. Nobody laughed. An older teen literally made cricket noises. I will never forget bombing that hard. Okay, so it’s revealed that Homer can take a punch so Moe becomes his boxing manager. Homer wins fights by simply outlasting his opponent until they conk out from exhaustion. Homer winds up fighting Drederick Tatum, a Mike Tyson stand-in, and may die in the ring. My favorite joke in this on this viewing was the Dr. Hibbert surgical 2x4, wrapped in sterile packaging. That is so fucking funny. But I do kinda consider this episode to be an average classic at best, and I kinda get the point that Charlie Sweatpants makes in his Zombie Simpsons essay (google it). He cites this as an early example of the post-classic era to come: the third act of the show gets a bit bogged down with drama; we’re supposed to believe that Homer might actually be in some mortal danger, when the show usually wouldn’t try to play up that aspect of a story as it’s a tad insulting to the discerning SImpsons’ viewer’s intelligence. But it’s kinda like the Lollapalooza episode with Homer and the canon. Anyway, I’m killing myself tonight. Got any messages for Jimmy Hendrix? who is in hell, by the way

THE B-SODE:

South Park: "Damien" Season 1 - Episode 10 | February 4, 1998 Here’s another write-up of a South Park episode where I get very preoccupied with the production order of the show. Because, for some strange reason the record has been irreparably damaged as people have confused production numbers for airdate order and whatnot. South Park was the first series where I became hyper aware of the production codes of TV shows, and I remember this being episode 108. And when the show didn’t air eighth in the series I was like WHERE IS 108??? This is also, I think, the first episode of the show to be not rated TV-MA. And as a dumbass 14-year-old this was like a gutting betrayal. So non-filthy jokes stuck out to me like a sore thumb. This episode had the least-explicit Chef song (remember how they literally gave Chef a song in every episode and the joke always was that it would either be or turn into a song about sex). It has Jimbo seeing Satan all buffed-out and remarking “that guy looks like he eats a lotta beef!” it has Jesus getting knocked out by Chef and saying “did anybody get the number of that truck”. I remember being so bummed out, “THOSE WERE ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO BE GRATUITOUSLY FILTHY AND THEY BLEW IT”. This episode, which features a boxing match between Satan and Jesus, also features Michael Buffer, who has trademarked “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble”. So if you write it into a script you must seek licensing from him, and most productions will simply hire him to say it himself because it only costs a little more than simply licensing it. This is a fact that I learned from the audio commentary for this episode, which I had to purchase on a CD because Warner Bros refused to release it without editing out a negative comment about the film Contact. Weird, right

Anything I translate will be from Chinese~ and as I actually have this CD I’m probably going to eventually make an srt file for it.....masochistic enough to lol... My motivation to do anything unfortunately really takes a hit in the summer due to how I find it harder to focus during this season since I despise the summer months and the heat....as I’d be whatever the opposite of a snowbird is.

Harada: No, No, the saying is "even the strongest demon can get sick" [i hear oni in the file though the translation I found didn’t say it] I remember this time last year, on the day of the student general assembly, you suffered quite a bit from a cold.

Hijikata: Although you're right... anyway, is it really time to hold another assembly? It felt that we had one only recently. How quickly time flies.

Harada: Ah, Hakuou Gakuen always holds assemblies every three months. but... that student will always ah....

Hijikata: Do you have an idea?

Harada: On the subject of ideas, there is nothing to be said of the Student General Assembly itself, because it is an important activity to cultivate the students' self-dependence, It's just.... that the student council president is Kazama?

Hijikata: I know what you want to say. That guy made a lot of unreasonable demands at the last student assembly. There's no way to guarantee that he won't be doing that this time.
