Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir take gold at Skate Canada International
Tumblr media
Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir posted a record total score en route to their seventh Skate Canada International title on Saturday and have not lost since returning to competition a year ago.
"We like to go to the rink every day," said Moir. We came back and we were not obliged. We play this sport because we love figure skating and we like to dance together. "
Performing to the sound of the Moulin Rouge movie, Virtue and Moir collected 199.86 points to beat their previous world record of 198.62 points set at the Worlds last spring.
"We are different athletes and people now," said Virtue. We are at another place in our skating and in what we feel on the ice. It feels good to feel at home. "
Canadians Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje won the silver medal with a score of 190.01. Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue finished third with a total of 189.43 points.
Virtue and Moir, who had set a record for their short dance program the day before, said the records were not important at the moment.
"Our friends and family at home believe it's very impressive. We receive several text messages, said Moir. I believe this world record will be beaten several times this season. It's nice to see it on the scoreboard, but we know it's going to change. "
"It validates the fact that we are on the right track, which athletes still love," added Virtue.
Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond won the women's title at the event.
The 21-year-old from Marystown, NL, posted 212.91 points, despite falling in a triple dive and double Axel.
"It's a very good starting point. Regarding the score, I'm where I was at the Grand Prix final in December. I have a few months ahead of my plan and I hope it will continue, "said Osmond.
Maria Sotskova of Russia was second at 192.52, while American Ashley Wagner, who was seventh after the short program, was third at 183.94.
Osmond led by seven points after the short program presented on Friday.

Frazier’s 2 Homers Lifts Mets Over Phillies, Snaps 6-Game Losing Streak – CBS New York
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Todd Frazier simply had to see his favourite opponent to finish his hunch. Frazier hit a couple of three-run homers and tied his career-best with six RBIs, and the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-Five Friday evening, snapping a six-game shedding streak. Michael Conforto additionally went deep for the Mets, who additionally snapped a six-game shedding streak in Philadelphia. The Phillies fell Three ½ video games in the back of the Cubs for the second one wild-card spot within the NL. The Mets are 5 video games again. “It felt good,” mentioned Frazier, who was once Five-for-30 throughout New York’s homestand. “It was a good team win.” Five of Frazier’s 18 homers this season are towards the Phillies. “Sometimes you can tell when guys are coming out of it, and I had a feeling he would be,” Mets supervisor Mickey Callaway mentioned. “This guy, he comes to play every day. Good results, bad results, he just wants to win. So I’m happy for him. That was big.” Mets starter Zack Wheeler and Phillies ace Aaron Nola pitched smartly ahead of turning it over to the bullpens. Philadelphia’s imploded, permitting 10 runs whilst recording 8 outs. Pete Alonso led off the 8th with a unmarried off Mike Morin (1-1) and Conforto reached on an infield unmarried. After J.D. Davis popped out, Joe Panik walked to load the bases. Amed Rosario then covered a two-run unmarried up the center to offer the Mets a Three-1 lead. Jared Hughes got here in and Frazier ripped his 17th homer to left to make it 6-1. Justin Wilson (Four-1) tossed a scoreless inning for the win after Wheeler gave up one run and 7 hits in six innings Conforto’s two-run shot off Edgar Garcia within the 9th was once his 28th this season and 18th in his profession towards Philadelphia. Frazier hooked up a couple of batters later for his 10th profession multihomer sport. Nola allowed one run and 4 hits, placing out seven in 6 0.33 innings. “Every game is so valuable right now, especially when Nola pitches,” Phillies supervisor Gabe Kapler mentioned. “We have to support him early. It’s very disappointing. When Nola pitches, we expect to win.” Nola took a two-hitter into the 7th ahead of working into hassle. He walked Davis to begin the inning and Panik singled. After Rosario popped out, Frazier was once hit through pitch to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Wilson Ramos covered an RBI unmarried that tied it at 1 and prolonged his career-best hitting streak to 23 video games. Jose Alvarez changed Nola and retired pinch-hitter Rajai Davis on a liner to shortstop and Jeff McNeil on a popup. “It’s frustrating,” Nola mentioned. “The seventh inning hurt me.” The Mets have been glad to peer him long gone. “You just understand he’s making his pitches, but hopefully you can get him out before nine and beat up on the bullpen,” Callaway mentioned. “That’s exactly what our team did.” J.T. Realmuto had two sacrifice flies for the Phillies. BROTHERLY LOVE: The Mets advanced to 47-28 at Citizens Bank Park since 2012. They are 14-Eight at the highway for the reason that All-Star destroy. TRAINER’S ROOM: 2B Robinson Cano will start a rehab project Saturday at Class A Brooklyn. Cano suffered a torn left hamstring 4 weeks and was once anticipated to pass over between six to 12 weeks. There’s nonetheless no timetable for his go back. “He feels like he’s in a good spot,” Callaway mentioned. “The performance staff feels like he’s ready to do this. This is a big step for him.” UP NEXT: LHP Steven Matz (Eight-Eight, Four.06 ERA) begins for the Mets and LHP Jason Vargas (6-6, Four.09) is going for the Phillies towards his former group on Saturday afternoon. THE CULT TO PERFORM SELECT DATES IN NORTH AMERICA AND THE UK IN RECOGNITION OF THE FORTHCOMING REISSUE OF THE BAND'S PIVOTAL ALBUM 'SONIC TEMPLE'
In recognition of the forthcoming re-issue of THE CULT's multi-platinum-selling Sonic Temple album on Beggars Banquet Records, the British group that's led by Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy will embark on select dates in North America and the UK starting May 2 in Houston, TX (itinerary below). Tickets are on sale now for the "A Sonic Temple" tour and available here.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the band expects to announce another block of dates very soon for2019/2020. The set list will draw from THE CULT's 10 studio albums with the centerpiece being a superset that's focused on the core songs from Sonic Temple; some of these songs have not been performed since the album (their fourth) was originally released in 1989. Sonic Temple--a pivotal, game-changing album that brought together the alternative and hard rock audiences--will be reissued in a 30th-anniversary edition by Beggars Banquet Records (exact release date TBA). Sonic Temple features the singles "Fire Woman," "Edie (Ciao Baby)," "Sweet Soul Sister" and "Sun King." Read a new Q&A with Astbury and Duffy below. Each show will be a gathering and celebration for Cult fans--an opportunity to come together for one night--an event that will be memorable for all who attend. In Los Angeles only, where Astbury and Duffy live, the band has created something extra special. The Greek Theatre will become "A Sonic Temple" on June 15 with a diverse multi-act bill that has roots in THE CULTlead singer Ian Astbury's pioneering pre-Lollapalooza festival "A Gathering of the Tribes" (1990).Prayers, Zola Jesus and Vowws will join headliners THE CULT. Read the press release here. Q&A WITH IAN ASTBURY AND BILLY DUFFY(April 2019)
Q&A  WITH IAN ASTBURY AND BILLY DUFFY: IAN ASTBURY: What was your mindset as a musician and as a person when you began to write the songs for the album? IA: We decamped from London to Los Angeles for a break in early '88, 87 had been particularly intense with The Electric album being released and touring. London had become difficult to live in for various reasons even walking the streets was challenging at times, I was receiving unwelcome attention from the way I looked I received a lot of unwanted attention. L.A. was a mystical paradise. I was drawn by myths that surrounded the canyons and hills of the city and the vibrant music film and art scene. Eventually, we began to feel more comfortable during this extended stay and soon fell into writing songs. We then went to Vancouver to spend time with Bob Rock in pre-production. He was the anchor and had a vision of what the band should sound like. I was traveling further inward. My instinct was to create a cinematic album that contained visceral landscapes, nuanced and textured. We certainly felt it was time for the next evolutionary step. 'Sonic Temple' is one of the few albums that brought together the divergent hard rock and alternative audiences. Can you reflect on this and how the band navigated this terrain? IA: We certainly didn't want to repeat ourselves. We wanted to retain our core DNA as we went deeper into psych and hard rock influences. It was a complete immersion for me into art, film, music, poetry, and literature, weaving those influences into what was to become Sonic Temple. The band was becoming more popular. We were in uncharted waters. Most of the bands we had come up with had split up or fallen off. We were accelerating. There was no real time to breathe. We were forming new allegiances and breaking the glass ceiling of "the indie outsider." How did 'Sonic Temple' change the band as you found success all over the world and toured relentlessly? IA: The lifestyle pressures were intense before 'Sonic Temple.' In 1987 we had already completed a sold-out tour of the UK, immediately jumping into a tour opening for Billy Idol that was total chaos. We then opened for Iggy Pop (who later appeared as a guest vocalist on the song NYC) and David Bowie in Europe and then went on a headline tour of the US and Canada with GNR opening. That was also chaotic as one could imagine. Expectations were high and we had a lot riding on ST being an artistic and commercial success. We blazed the trail in some way. Later that year we had to cancel a tour of Japan due to nervous exhaustion but were given the go ahead to play Wembley Arena and Brixton Academy needless to mention an infamous Australian tour. It's impossible to quantify the experience unless you've lived through it. Several critics made judgments during that time without any real experience or insight into what it was like to be that young inside of a whirlwind. The subsequent touring for 'Sonic Temple' picked up where we left off in '87. Our lives where irreversibly changed as we began to soar the platinum skies. In some ways the success of the biggest songs and videos from the album dwarfed other songs from the album that were illuminating so many subjects and the chaos of the times. What are your thoughts about this? IA: Certainly, MTV amplified the commercial success of, say, Fire Woman but for me the heart of the album was really in songs like Edie, NYC and American Horse and Soul Asylum. We pushed to create tension drama and vibrant layers I was trying to create a soundtrack for an imagined film. As you tour this year with 'Sonic Temple' as the centerpiece of your set, what do you want audiences to take away from it? IA: I hope people coming to the concerts take away a sense of love and optimism, connection and communion.
BILLY DUFFY: 'Sonic Temple' is one of the few albums that brought together the divergent hard rock and alternative audiences. Can you reflect on this and how the band navigated this terrain? BD: I believe in retrospect the album was basically the culmination of all the work the band had put in since our inception in 1983 as the Death Cult. It was an evolution of the partnership as writers and performers of Ian and me. At the time in that decade, we basically put one foot after the other as you do when starting out and followed our gut instincts as how best to develop as a team and always look to move forward. In simpler terms maybe we tried specifically on ST to take elements of our sound from the Love album and from Electric--both sonically quite different--and make a cohesive third album having the best of both all the while still moving forward and being of our time. I'd agree that perhaps it was one of the few albums that did indeed marry hard and indie rock and that was simply how things evolved with the Cult--not really part of any master plan. However, we have always tried to avoid being pigeonholed since the very early days so it's just how we operated. I think the greater shock to the Cult's early fan base was from Love to Electric, so by ST we felt we had established ourselves as more a rock n roll band than an indie one, even though of course that was our background. What was your mindset when writing the music for the album? BD: I think as always we were reflecting as honestly as we could our lives and environment at that time. I do feel we did manage to put together some great songs, which can be a challenge when your life is mostly spent on the road. Personally I was proud to have gotten the band so far and wanted to enjoy and experience making a truly full-sounding rock album like the ones that had so inspired me back in Manchester in the early 70s. How did Sonic Temple change the band as you found success all over the world and toured relentlessly? BD: I think we had gotten used to touring with Electric a fair bit by then but did embark on a serious year-long tour for ST. I'm not exactly sure we felt successful, but it was reassuring for me to see the band get to another level of recognition. The momentum was always forward and upward. We never looked back too much and never second guessed ourselves. We did have to grow into a 'arena' band and present a somewhat larger than life stage show but that was what was required of us at the time and we did it as best we could. And in the end, I had a lot of fun doing it. As you tour this year with Sonic Temple as the centerpiece of your set, what do you want audiences to take away from it? BD: I think as time has passed our music has endured fairly well. I'd like fans to not only allow themselves a little indulgence into maybe simpler happier times of the late 80s for a few hours at a ST 19 show but also be happy that the music is now really their possession, not ours, and to do with it what they will. For the most part, once an album is done, Ian and I never look back too much and let it go out there with few regrets. Let them celebrate those good times back then but not dwell in them and even more so look forward to new and different experiences in the future.

CANADIAN THINGS PART 2, THE SEQUEL NO ONE ASKED FOR!!!!
hiiii yesss!! so if you’ve seen my last canada post (HA that’s a pun bc our mail service is called “canada post” har har har...anyway) u know that i had some records to set straight, so to speak, so i’m back at it again w canada FACTS aka things you probably don’t know but might be useful and helpful in your attempt to flesh out realistic Canadiana™. this is in honour of me hitting 500 followers, thank y’all so much ily all and thanks for bein awesome!!!
without further ado, buckle up, buds, here we go again!!!!
canada eradicated pennies not too long ago. basically, we don’t have a 1¢ coin anymore, we only have 5¢ coins ergo all payments paid in cash are rounded up/down accordingly. jack and ransom 100% hate this because now they’re so annoyed by the concept of carrying around pennies (”what’s the point!?!? 1¢??! USELESS!!)
along this same vein, canada doesn’t have a $1 bill, we have coins known as a loonie ($1) and a toonie ($2), the smallest bill we have is $5 (jack is still consistently weirded out by paper dollar bills. it feels wrong.)
ALSO while we’re on the topic of money, all our bills are different colours (blue for $5, purple for $10, green for $20, red for $50, brown for $100), they’re also waterproof (not heatproof tho!!!), and the $100 ARE NOT officially created to smell like maple syrup but i can assure you i’ve sniffed some bills that do smell like maple syrup and i cannot explain why (ransom still gets confused w american money “it looks like monopoly money, jack!” “i know, bro, i know”)
IN OTHER MONEY RELATED TRAINS OF THOUGHT, there are two main canadian airlines: air canada and westjet. they both have a total monopoly on canadian travel so it’s real damn expensive to fly anywhere in canada from within canada. it sucks a whole lot. (just remember than whenever you write ransom/jack flying home. it’s a pretty penny even if jack is loaded)
age of consent is 16 across canada
the drinking age in canada is 18/19 (dependent on provinces), however, CANADA WIDE the legal adult age (to vote, essentially) is 18.
driving ages differ province to province (you’d have to google because even i don’t know every province)
SPEAKING OF PROVINCES, canada is split into provinces and territories: 10 provinces and 3 territories. here’s a breakdown of each (it’s long, skip if you wanna!!):
british columbia (BC)
west coast best coast, lots of mountains, very hippy dippy, home province of vancouver aka movie city central, capital city is VICTORIA not vancouver, rains a lot, is known for being the birth city of ryan reynolds (your welcome), is split into two main sections: the mainland and the island (even though BC is composed of many islands, vancouver island is referred to as THE island), bland football team, even blander NHL team.
alberta (AB)
neighbour to BC, cowboys, hyper-conservative, also mountains, capital is EDMONTON not calgary, lots of extreme weather (sunshine and +20 (celsius) and then it’ll snow. alberta is weird like that), oil oil OIL, two mediocre football teams, home of the calgary stampede (again, cowboys), i often refer to alberta as the texas of canada and i’ve never had someone disagree tbh, mediocre hockey teams (including connor mcfuckingjesus don’t get me started)
saskatchewan (SK)
neighbour to AB, pronounced SASS-CAT-CHEW-WAH-N, flat flat FLAT, farmers galore, capital city regina (hahaha laugh it up it’s not that funny once you’re beyond the age of 10), even more mediocre football team (i’m only saying that bc i’m from manitoba, the rival province), tbh i don’t know much about saskatchewan except that we drove all the way across it once for a roadtrip and i swear to god we didn’t see another vehicle or human for the entirety of our trip across
manitoba (MB)
neighbour to SK and also the prime rival, capital city winnipeg (YES IT’S A REAL PLACE, I WAS BORN THERE, I LIVED THERE FOR 18 YEARS, CAN CONFIRM, STOP IT), cold as FUUUUUCK in the winter (-40 (celsius) and schools don’t close until it’s -45, so, deal w THAT), mosquitoes fucking galore (it’s disgusting and awful and makes being outdoors AWFUL), we also have polar bears!! (more north, but, still!!!!), really cool live theatre and music vibes, very dry heat, UBER MEDIOCRE FOOTBALL TEAM (but still better than SK rough riders bc provincial rivalry!!!), SUPER mediocre NHL team (i only say this because my mom’s a jets fan whereas i’m a pens fan...lmao BYE MOM), tbh can’t say many mean things bc i still love wpg with at least half my heart!!!!
ontario (ON)
neighbour to MB, capital city toronto, home of the capital city of CANADA, ottawa, muskoka chairs, so many fuckin lakes (everyones fave place to camp/own a cabin), extreme winters just like MB, niagara falls, again a rly cool arts district here (in TO and surrounding area), 3 football teams bc why the fuck not (fffffuck the TO argonauts), 2 NHL teams (everyone in canada hates the leafs. that’s not a fact but i could find enough evidence of it to convince you it is), basically TO is considered the center of the fucking universe according to everyone who lives in TO and everyone who lives outside of canada bc no one knows anything else about canada. canada might as well JUST be TO for all people fucking care. just. fuck toronto. (i think it’s a canadian thing to be Bitter and Annoyed about toronto’s unending praises from every corner of the map) ((jack is V much “fffffuck toronto” and ransom is V much “fuck you toronto is RAD”)
quebec (QC)
neighbour to ON, pronounced KUH-BECK not KWUH-BECK or KEY-BECK and lord have mercy on your soul if you dare say it like “Q-BECK”, capital city quebec city, french-canadian province that’s threatened to “leave” canada multiple times, HOME OF OUR DING DONG HIMSELF, MSSR. ZIMMERMANN!!!, poutine holy fucking HECK god bless poutine (if you think it’s gross i already don’t like you sorry 100000% NOT SORRY. jack and ransom love some good ass poutine oKEEEEER), a rly good music scene (osheaga music festival is top notch), essentially a canadian paris except people speak quebecois not france-french (but you can get away with it in most respects, there’s differences but the foundations are the same, bc DUH they’re the same language but essentially different dialects, KIND OF similar to mandarin and cantonese (although that particular case has more nuances than this one but you get the idea))
newfoundland and labrador (NL)
neighbour to QB, capital city st. john’s (not to be confused with saint john, NB...yeah there’s another province w almost the EXACT SAME CITY NAME sigh i know it’s dumb and rude) i’ve never really been to the east coast so idk what to tell you but LOBSTER and FISHING and WEIRD FUCKIN ACCENTS, another coastal place so it’s p weird and hippy dippy, but i’ve only ever heard that they’re lovely people, often referred to as newfies.
now, the maritime provinces....starting with new brunswick (NB)
just south of QB, capital city fredericton, v small in comparison to other canadian provinces (as u can tell), again don’t know much about NB but i know they’re big on fish and are basically Maine The Second (they’re pressed right up against maine so, it’s basically maine
nova scotia (NS)
south-ish of NB, capital city halifax, HOME TO THE REAL LIFE DING DONG OF MY HEART, MISTER 87, SIDNEY CROSBY, a full on island, full of wonderful kind people a la mister crosby himself (honestly, it’s just a bunch of super kind people), really cool coastal scenery with amazing seafood (as you’d expect), home of the city that many a traveller has confused for sydney australia, very old-fashioned (idk how to explain???) but just like...you feel like you’re in a storybook when you’re there, lots of lighthouses, overall a v nice place to be
prince edward island (PEI)
the teeny-tiniest place in all of canada i’m certain, north-east-ish of NB and NS, capital city charlottetown, honestly i’m running out of things to say, it’s exactly like NB and NS had a baby that never grew out of infancy it’s so small.
now onto the TERRITORIES which are all up north...yukon (YT)
pronounced YOU-CON, north of BC, east of alaska, capital city whitehorse, cold as heck (tundra baby!!), extremely expensive living conditions ($9 for a 2L of milk, $18 for some fuckin apples...absolute fuckin robbery), lots of hunting and fishing goes on up here (aka lots of people hunt/prepare their own food), lots of mountains and such, v beautiful.
northwest territories (NT)
above AB and SK, capital city yellowknife, used to be bigger but then it was divided up (creating the new territory nunavut), v similar to yukon but with less mountain and more lakes, again v cold bc TUNDRA, my cousin met her husband while working in yellowknife...she’s from MB and he’s from ENGLAND aka what kinda fucking fateful BS...amazing, p cool w lots of islands and such far up north, it’s neat and suuuper beautiful in the summer (so many flowers lksdfjlskad)
nunavut (NU)
pronounced NEW-NUH-VUH-T, north of MB, capital city iqaluit (pronounced EE-CAL-EW-IT) used to be part of NT but they separated into two territories circa 1999, again v similar to the other territories, beautiful scenery with an OBSCENE amount of islands (colouring in maps was always a fucking DOOZY), again, not much to say. just a rly lovely place.
WOO congrats if you read all that lmao now lets get into some other stuff!!
our thanksgiving is in october, the second monday in october to be exact. it’s only been a thing since like??? the 60s??? like it’s a brand new concept, essentially, and i’m not even 100% sure why we have thanksgiving but we do (it’s mostly a charade, thanksgiving means nothing in canada, it’s a completely arbitrary reason to be grateful and eat some fuckin turkey) (jack and ransom both support arbitrary turkey holidays)
canada’s national sport is actually, like, officially lacrosse?????? i know what the fuck (i bet ransom follows lacrosse)
marriage equality has been a thing since 2005 (doesn’t mean jack wasn’t excited about the USA, just, not quite as overcome as bitty was)
winnie the pooh? based on a real bear from winnipeg, MB. yeah, be fuckin jealous y’all
if you didn’t know canada has universal health care. it’s pretty fucking rad.
idk if this is Too Obvious but canada has two official languages, english and french, so all of our packaging/instructions has to be in both languages. everything. from toothpaste to trampolines. everything. signage is a bit more dicey, most trans-canada highway signs are in both languages but more rural/urban ones probably aren’t (jack gets thrown off still when he instinctively looks for the french translations on packaging for nothing to be found. it happens more than you think)
oh also?? we used british spelling, meaning we add a bunch of ‘u’s where they don’t really need to be. this is 100% a point of contention between bitty and jack.
CANADA IS METRIC. IT’S RLY SIMPLE PALS. everything is in groups of 10s. 10 millimetres = 1 centimetre. 100 centimetres = 1 metre. 1000 metres = 1 kilometre (aka how we measure speed, km/hour) you get it? (the prefixes, ie. milli, centi, kilo, are huge helpful hints)
the exception to this is baking measurements??? unlike the UK we couldn’t escape the wrath of cups and teaspoons and all those other arbitrary measurement devices. we still use those (for the most part)
we use fucking celsius okay (except on ovens, mostly because they’re american distributed machines ergo run in fahrenheit) anyway it’s p straightforward:
celsius is in relation to water temperature, ergo, 0 degrees celsius is waters freezing point, anything below that is freezing (relatively, of course), anything above it is not. this is especially useful for discussing weather, as, y’know, most people typically use temperature for (outside of the kitchen and hospitals, that is)
+20? nice summer day. -40? typical MB winter, +30? typical fuckin central canada summer, +7? dependent on where you live it could either mean SHORTS!! (central canada) or a light jacket (west coast), again it’s all relative to your acclimatization
okay i think this is long enough!! here’s some random nostalgic things that ransom and holster def remember/love dearly
i pray with all my heart that jack has this funny little soft spot for ‘corner gas’ in the same way i do (it’s a canadian prairie sitcom CLASSIC and i love it SO MUCH)
jack and ransom both have a strange crush on rick mercer
MO FUCKIN FRAGGLE ROCK BIIIIITCH
ransom definitely had some misconceptions about what being 16 would be like because of this fuckin show (he also 100% did the air guitar to the theme song)
this show meant a whole heck of a lot to lil bb jack (who 100% watched cartoons in english AND french okay????)
ALSO (i think i mentioned this in the last post but!!) ransom grew up watching caillou in english, jack in french, and they argue all the time about the differences between the two.
ransom remembers being a little bab watching this nonsense right before bed with a cup of warm milk and exactly two oreos (just me??? pshhh i don’t believe it)
jack had very strategically thought out how he would destroy his competitors at this game show
jack loved babar. don’t even touch me. just. imagine tiny jacques w a lil stuffed elephant my hearT!!!!!
ALSO MCFUCKING T’CHOUPI ET DOUDOU!!!!!! i watched this one in english but i can only imagine jack loved it
okay. okay. again, thank u for reading, i hope this was helpful!! lemme know if there’s anything i missed!! who knows, i might make a third installment one day!?!??!

Three things the two 2018 World Series teams should reaffirm for the Yankees
Teams are calling about Gary Sanchez and the Yankees would be crazy to trade him
(Maddie Meyer/Getty)
Later tonight the Red Sox and Dodgers will open the 2018 World Series at Fenway Park. The Red Sox are looking to win their fourth championship in the last 15 years. The Dodgers are trying to win their first World Series title in 30 years, since the iconic Kirk Gibson home run series. We’re all Dodgers fans this series, right? Right.
Anyway, this is the time of year when we start to see “this is what [team] should learn from the World Series teams” articles. I’ve done it myself. Multiple times. This is not one of those articles. What is there to learn from the Red Sox and Dodgers? Draft and develop well, be good at as many facets of the game as possible, and hope it all works out? Yeah. We knew that already.
The Yankees don’t need to learn anything from the Red Sox and Dodgers. Rather, there are a couple of things the Yankees already know that the Red Sox and Dodgers reinforce. Here, in no particular order, are three big picture ideas the Sawx and Dodgers reaffirm, just in case you or the Yanks have forgotten.
It’s okay to outspend everyone (by a lot)
Kinda weird I have to point this out when talking about the Yankees, but here we are. Between payroll and luxury tax, the Yankees paid $240M for their roster last season. This year that number was all the way down to $193M or so. The Yankees went to Game Seven of the ALCS last year and cut nearly $50M off their payroll. Good grief.
Let’s check in on 2018 Opening Day payrolls, shall we?
Red Sox: $228.4M
Giants: $205.6M
Dodgers: $199.6M
Would you look at that? Two of the top three teams in payroll are in the World Series. The third team stunk, but you know what? That third team won three World Series titles in a five-year span recently and spent like crazy to try to extend the championship window. They tried like hell to keep winning. There’s no extra credit for winning with a cheapest roster. Spend spend spend.
The Yankees set out to reset their luxury tax rate this year and they did exactly that. Will they increase payroll next year and exceed the luxury tax threshold? Brian Cashman didn’t make it seem like a given. “I don’t want to speak for (Hal Steinbrenner), but my general feeling from him and for us has been not wanting to line the pockets of others to let them utilize that excess against us,” said the GM.
Luxury tax money goes to non-luxury tax paying teams. At least part of it does. It sucks having to pay bills, we all know that firsthand, so I totally get why the Yankees don’t want to continue footing a luxury tax bill. By doing that though, the Yankees are throwing away their market advantages. Playing in New York and having this organization’s history means sky high revenues. The Yankees have willingly leveled the playing field.
The Red Sox spent like crazy this year — I don’t want to hear any “they’re buying a championship!” nonsense, it’s hard for a Yankees fan to be more hypocritical than that — and the result was 108 wins and a trip to the postseason. The Dodgers, like the Yankees, worked to get under the luxury tax threshold this year. They went from 104 wins last year to 92 wins this year. They leveled the playing field and had to battle all season.
If there’s a lesson here, the lesson is that when a team has a very talented young core capable of doing something special, they absolutely should throw money at whatever roster holes exist in an effort to get over the hump. Could you get saddled with a bad contract along the way? Absolutely. You also might wind up in the World Series. Success can be fleeting and championship windows can closer sooner than you expect. Spend when you can.
Home runs are cool, long live home runs

The Red Sox clinched the AL pennant with a 4-1 win over the Astros in ALCS Game Five. The Dodgers clinched the NL pennant with a 5-1 win over the Brewers in NLDS Game Seven. All eleven runs in the two deciding games were scored on home runs. Every single one. Three solo homers (Christian Yelich, J.D. Martinez, Marwin Gonzalez), one two-run homer (Cody Bellinger), and two three-run homers (Rafael Devers, Yasiel Puig) equal eleven runs.
From 2016-18, there were 1.19 home runs per game during the regular season and 1.15 home runs per game in the postseason. The difference is one homer every 25 games. A negligible difference. Also:
2018 regular season: 40.3% runs on homers
2018 postseason: 40.2% runs on homers
As Joe Sheehan notes, the team with more home runs has won 17 of 21 games this postseason. Point is, home run production does not decrease in October. That’s a lazy and tired narrative that anyone watching this postseason should see is false. Hitting a home run is literally the best thing a hitter can do and that is true any time of year.
Fortunately, Cashman and the Yankees don’t seem eager to overhaul their record setting home run offense this winter. They’re not going to be pressured into shaking things up after a quick ALDS exit, or after last year’s offensive issues in Houston during the ALCS. “I’m good with our offense. I think we lost because we were ineffective, and that had to do with what was done to us,” said Cashman at his end-of-season press conference.
Are the Yankees too right-handed? Yeah, I think so, especially now that Didi Gregorius is going to miss an undetermined length of time next season. Another lefty bat and another high on-base guy in left field should be offseason priorities. Generally speaking though, a home run heavy offense is a (very) good thing. The Yankees shouldn’t overreact to the ALDS (and last year’s ALCS) and overhaul things. The ball still flies in October.
Don’t pass up elite talent
I didn’t love the idea of trading for Gerrit Cole last year. Not at the reported asking price. The Yankees wanted to build a deal around Clint Frazier and secondary prospects. The Pirates wanted Frazier and Miguel Andujar, and no. Just no. The Yankees stood their ground and Cole went to the Astros for a package that looked underwhelming at the time and looks even more underwhelming now.
What I didn’t appreciate enough at the time is how hard it is to acquire elite talent. And Cole, even with the step backwards he took in 2016 and 2017, is an elite talent. He was 27 years old at the time and he’s a former first overall pick with premium velocity, a swing-and-miss slider, and pretty good control. How often do players like that become available? How often do they actually change teams? Not often at all. These guys are hard to get.
Look at the two World Series teams. When the Dodgers needed a shortstop to replace the injured Corey Seager, they went out and got Manny Machado. When the Red Sox needed another starter a few years ago, they traded for Chris Sale. When they needed a power bat last winter, they signed J.D. Martinez. There were no corners cut. There approach was “we’re a great team and we’re getting the best players available to address our needs.”
This isn’t to say I think the Yankees should’ve caved and given up Frazier and Andujar for Cole. Andujar is my dude. Can’t really blame the Yankees because the Pirates said no and wound up making a bad trade. My point is elite talent is difficult to acquire and whenever it becomes available, the Yankees should get involved in the bidding. They did last offseason with Giancarlo Stanton! This offseason Machado and Bryce Harper are available for nothing but cash, and yeah.
This sorta circles back to the first point. The Yankees stuck to a self-imposed payroll limit this year, and if they do it again next year and miss out on a prime-aged superstar like Machado or Harper, it’s going to look terrible. Squint your eyes and you can find baseball reasons to pass on Machado (two knee surgeries) and Harper (various injuries), and if the Yankees put on the full course press and they sign elsewhere anyway, so be it. But they have to try. Role players are important, but you win with stars.
Teams are calling about Gary Sanchez and the Yankees would be crazy to trade him

Creator of reserve, “Of course, It’s Sizzling in Listed here.”
Even when you are a admirer of a distinct significant league baseball staff, it can be tricky to maintain monitor of all of the information encompassing your favored club on a each day foundation.
When you are a fantasy baseball proprietor, multiplying that effort and hard work by thirty in purchase to maintain tabs on each individual and each and every club is a fool’s errand — bordering on the unattainable.
Worry not! We are going to be in this article each and every Monday to give you a snapshot of what is actually likely on in the environment of baseball, supplying you with one fantasy takeaway from each individual of the league’s thirty groups. Consider of it as your one-end store for the 7 days forward.
Listed here are the takeaways as we head into Week 15 of the 2017 time:
Arizona Diamondbacks: Robbie Ray will undoubtedly be effectively-rested when he usually takes the mound on Tuesday to face the Reds. The southpaw has not pitched in a activity considering the fact that July 6 because of to the timing of the All-Star break, coupled with manager Torey Lovullo’s want to give the 25-calendar year-old a few additional days off. Ray has thrown less than a hundred pitches in just 4 of his 17 begins this time, and was only one-2 pitches shy of triple digits in a few of those appearances. He also ranks seventh in the league in pitches for each get started. He may be a little bit rusty, but he undoubtedly needed the time off.
Atlanta Braves: Don’t appear now, but the Braves are instantly a .500 staff, and could be obtaining a important element of their bullpen back again in the up coming few days. Arodys Vizcaino has not pitched considering the fact that July 2 because of to a strained suitable index finger, but soon after a pair of bullpen periods this weekend, manager Brian Snitker seems shut to activating his key setup male. Vizcaino has 15 retains and two will save this time to go alongside with a 2.38 Period.
Baltimore Orioles: Immediately after two scoreless eighth innings more than the weekend, manager Buck Showalter could last but not least have seen more than enough to reinstate Zach Britton as the team’s closer likely forward. “If you bear in mind the first two or a few outings, it wasn’t Zach, and you could notify [by] the appear on his face he didn’t truly feel very good about the command of the sinker and everything, and that’s why we tried out to continue to be on an each and every-other-day issue,” Showalter reported prior to Sunday’s activity. Assume some help you save prospects this 7 days, presented a staff that has misplaced eight-of-10 video games can give Britton the chance.
Boston Pink Sox: Pablo Sandoval has been selected for assignment, and Tzu-Wei Lin has been sent back again to Triple-A Pawtucket. Both of those moves sign yet yet another opening at third foundation in Boston. Hopefully, Brock Holt is last but not least all set to stake his assert at the scorching corner. Holt went one-for-5 through the team’s doubleheader on Sunday, his first action considering the fact that April 20 when vertigo sent him to the bench. “If I wasn’t all set, I wouldn’t be in this article,” Holt reported. Fingers crossed, he’ll be equipped to adhere all over. Usually, a trade for a additional responsible third-foundation solution is probably the up coming class of action.
Chicago Cubs: John Lackey (plantar fasciitis) is scheduled to be activated from the 10-day DL on Tuesday to get started for the Cubs. It will be the 435th appearance of the veteran’s occupation, and 434th get started. He has only pitched in relief as soon as in his occupation: an unexpected emergency inning of operate in 2004 soon after then-Angels starter Bartolo Colon received shelled. That is why manager Joe Maddon thinks rumors of Lackey obtaining sent to the bullpen are a little bit foolish. “‘Just to check out to take him out of a activity — and then check out to notify him one thing like that? My God,” Maddon reported. ”Exponentially even worse.”
Chicago White Sox: The Terrific 2017 Market Off has started. Jose Quintana was traded to the Cubs on Thursday, and lots of additional members of the Chicago clubhouse are predicted to be packing their luggage in the up coming two months. Todd Frazier to the Pink Sox would seem incredibly plausible, and rumors of David Robertson to the Yankees are commencing to heat up. But we all know you will find only one shift that most fantasy house owners care about, and it was expressed incredibly nicely by a CSN Chicago headline before this 7 days: “WHITE SOX Contact UP NOT-YOAN MONCADA.” That wait carries on…
Cincinnati Reds: The numbers eight-6-one-one-eight examine like an Arizona zip code, but in actuality, those are the runs authorized by Homer Bailey in his five begins this time next elbow operation No. 3. Even so, soon after obtaining lit up on Sunday towards the Nationals, manager Bryan Cost remained optimistic about his pitcher’s future. “There have been zero health problems,” Cost reported. “No doubt, you never pitch as infrequently as he has in the very last a few several years and appear back again and be the 2012-2013 version of Homer Bailey. That being reported, our expectation, and I’m sure his, is that he’ll go out and carry out and give us video games that appear a good deal additional like the (one-operate video games) than the other a few.” We are going to see.
Cleveland Indians: Austin Jackson went one-for-4 on Sunday at the DH spot for Triple-A Columbus, the very last end in his rehab for a strained still left quad. Considering that he has yet to enjoy the field in the minors, one would count on at the very least yet another day or two in Triple-A for Jackson. Assuming all goes effectively, he should really be back again in Cleveland’s outfield by the close of this 7 days — presumably in suitable-field — at the very least until Lonnie Chisenhall (calf pressure) is all set to return to action himself.
Colorado Rockies: Immediately after remaining on the disabled checklist considering the fact that July 2 with a strained suitable calf, Ian Desmond has returned to the Rockies’ lineup. In his first activity back again on Sunday, Desmond went 2-for-3 before obtaining pulled in the sixth as a precaution with the Rockies up major. For now, manager Bud Black suggests he’ll use Desmond in still left field and first foundation instead than at shortstop, even if Trevor Tale carries on to struggle.
Detroit Tigers: Michael Fulmer, very last year’s AL Rookie of the Calendar year and a 2017 All-Star, has a 2.44 Period and a .188 BAA in his very last six begins — including an eight-IP, two-hit gem towards the Blue Jays on Saturday. Even so, rumors of a probable trade are increasing, particularly soon after observing the return the White Sox received for Jose Quintana. Fulmer has read the rumblings. “I’m not truly fearful about it,” he reported in response. “We are seeking to maintain the entire staff jointly suitable now.” We are going to know for sure if Fulmer is suitable in about two months.
Houston Astros: Dallas Keuchel (neck) is scheduled to pitch now for Double-A Corpus Christi, the first time the Astros’ ace will have taken the mound considering the fact that signing up for the disabled checklist on June 5. Assume 2-3 innings of operate and then a re-evaluation of his position. A timetable for his return to Houston is non-existent, as the staff is probably to enjoy points by ear. As Keuchel himself suggests, “It’s how I truly feel on Tuesday and how I continue on to progress. It may be one [get started], it may be fourteen.”
Kansas Town Royals: Nate Karns, who recorded 10 and twelve strikeouts in his two begins prior to his exiting a May well 19 outing towards the Twins with tightness in his forearm, will miss out on the rest of 2017. Karns will have operation to proper his thoracic outlet syndrome on Wednesday and will never be back again before up coming spring. This growth will probably inspire the Royals to offer for a fifth starter before the deadline, as they experienced been counting on Karns’ return. If that fails, even so, Eric Skoglund (one.62 Period in his very last a few Triple-A begins) could be an in-house alternative.
Los Angeles Angels: Nick Franklin was traded to the Angels on the very last day of June, and it seems the staff has now resolved to make a adjust at 2nd foundation. Danny Espinosa was selected for assignment on Sunday, leaving Franklin and Cliff Pennington to share time at the situation. “The one issue they’re going to bring, we truly feel, is some on-foundation proportion, at the the very least,” manager Mike Scioscia reported. Kaleb Cowart has been enjoying 2nd foundation at Triple-A Salt Lake and is batting .301 on the time, so if this new-appear infield fails to impress, he could get the phone.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Winners of nine straight video games (and with Clayton Kershaw on the mound Monday), the Dodgers are not specifically anxious about their recent double-digit direct in the NL West. That is why the staff is keen to take points incredibly slow with the rehabs of Adrian Gonzalez (back again), Hyun-Jin Ryu (foot) and Scott Kazmir (hip). All a few are progressing in their respective rehabs, and all could conceivably be back again before the close of July. That reported, with no have to have to press the issue, the wait could continue on deep into August.
Miami Marlins: Immediately after obtaining swept by the Dodgers more than the weekend, the optimism for a probable wild-card operate is obtaining dimmer by the day. It would be incredibly stunning if this staff stays intact appear July 31. Giancarlo Stanton has a no-trade clause in his mega-contract, but may be keen to waive it if he is delighted with the destination. San Francisco is reported to be pursuing a probable offer for the outfielder. Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna, Justin Bour and Christian Yelich have also appear up in trade excitement. It’s not truly a concern of “if” with the Marlins any more, but instead of “who” and “when.”
Milwaukee Brewers: With the Cubs landing Quintana, it is really now up to the first-spot Brewers to return serve, and it seems the staff does not strategy to stand pat. Sonny Grey seems to be the organization’s key target, as the suitable hander has associations with Eric Sogard, Stephen Vogt and Milwaukee pitching coach Derek Johnson (the latter coached Grey at Vanderbilt). Even if that offer falls through, administration has expressed a willingness to do everything in its energy to acquire now.
Minnesota Twins: The Twins are only one one/2 video games behind first-spot Cleveland in the AL Central, but it is really difficult to envision they’re going to continue to be this competitive heading into August and September. No detest towards Minnesota, but let us be straightforward — they are commencing Bartolo Colon on Tuesday. It could be difficult to be “sellers” offered their spot in the standings, but wouldn’t they be far better served in the lengthy time period by dealing Brian Dozier, Ervin Santana and Brandon Kintzler? And reality be advised, those specials could truly boost their 2017 likelihood dependent on the returns.
New York Mets: A different 7 days, yet another personal injury for Yoenis Cespedes. The outfielder tweaked his hip seeking to make a capture on Saturday, and claimed that leaving the activity was merely a precautionary measure offered the blowout rating. That reported, he also sat on Sunday, and could potentially be out of action all over again on Monday. “I never imagine it is really real significant with Ces, but undoubtedly, if he is out for a interval of time, we will do the ideal we can,” manager Terry Collins reported. It’s disheartening for Cespedes’ fantasy house owners to be sure, but except if he will get dealt to an AL staff the place he can DH and avoid these sorts of injuries, it is really element of the expense of drafting him.
New York Yankees: Michael Pineda is completed for 2017, and potentially as a Yankee, as he’ll be a free of charge agent appear October. Though the pitcher is likely to get a 2nd impression before likely underneath the knife, Pineda has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the UCL in his suitable elbow, creating Tommy John operation incredibly probably. The club is not likely to rush into a worry trade for yet another commencing pitcher, nor will they unexpectedly boost Triple-A stud Possibility Adams. Even so, more than the up coming fourteen days, count on each and every probable pitching trade to have the pinstripes connected to it as a rumored husband or wife.
Oakland Athletics: Immediately after dealing away two of their major relievers (see Washington down below), no one expects the A’s to stand pat the rest of July. GM Billy Beane suggests he will continue on to make specials when he can obtain “the ideal players, interval.” Expected to obtain new households in the up coming few months are Sonny Grey, Jed Lowrie and Yonder Alonso. “Very first of all, we have to take a appear at the place we are — we are in very last spot. And the route we are heading is, we are likely younger,” suggests Beane.
Philadelphia Phillies: Aaron Altherr, who experienced been hitting .370 in July, seems sure for the disabled checklist soon after having to go away Friday’s activity with a strained suitable hamstring. Whilst it is really attainable that Altherr could be all set to enjoy in sooner than 10 days, the staff wants two roster spots to open up up with the predicted return of 2nd baseman Cesar Hernandez (indirect) and pitcher Vince Velasquez (elbow) for this week’s collection towards Miami.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Though most fantasy house owners have probably moved on from Jung Ho Kang lengthy back, those who have yet to do so in the hopes that the South Korean could be equipped to fix his visa problems in time to enjoy in 2017 can truly feel free of charge to let him go. GM Neal Huntington suggests that “it is really difficult to visualize a scenario the place one thing is likely to adjust overnight and he is likely to be equipped to appear in in this article and contribute to enable us acquire video games.” As for 2018, even that would seem like a tenuous possibility at this level.
St. Louis Cardinals: Seung-hwan Oh gave up a few runs in the ninth inning on Friday evening to lose a activity for the Cardinals. On Sunday, it was Brett Cecil who came in to shut out a victory, and he also came away with a loss instead of a help you save. Even so, Mike Matheny is nevertheless not all set to declare that Trevor Rosenthal is his closer likely forward. “(It’s not) suitable for us fairly yet to make the statement on who is likely to pitch the ninth and give anyone that title,” Matheny reported. Mainly because Rosenthal worked all weekend, Oh is almost certainly likely to get the phone if a closer is needed on Monday. Even so, appear Tuesday? Improved phone Rosenthal.
San Diego Padres: Hector Sanchez went 3-for-9 with two dwelling runs and five RBI more than the weekend although spelling Austin Hedges behind the plate. Hedges took a foul ball off the mask on Friday, and although doctors never imagine he experienced a concussion, the catcher nevertheless does not truly feel fairly suitable. “What I was advised by doctors… is it is really one thing underneath the amount of a concussion, but he is received some basic haze from it. Hopefully, it wears off rapidly,” manager Andy Green reported. If Hedges carries on to miss out on time, each day fantasy players could want to roll the dice on San Diego’s scorching backup catcher.
San Francisco Giants: Hunter Strickland has nine retains on the time, and has managed a one.35 Period and a .229 BAA to go alongside with a 10.eight K/9 amount more than his previous 15 appearances. Groups like the Rays had been seen scouting Strickland more than the weekend. With Mark Melancon (elbow) predicted to reclaim the team’s closer function any time he returns from the disabled checklist, Sam Dyson would presumably slide into the eighth-inning function currently occupied by Strickland, which is why the Giants could think about a offer.
Seattle Mariners: Not all small-league demotions are the identical. When it arrives to young players obtaining sent down suitable before the All-Star break, it is really normally just a way for significant league groups to exploit a loophole in the rostering procedures. That seems to be the scenario with Sam Gaviglio, who was sent to Triple-A Tacoma soon after a third consecutive loss on July 6. Prior to that seven-4 loss to Oakland, Gaviglio experienced posted a respectable 2.forty eight Period and .238 BAA in his prior six begins. With Seattle last but not least needing a fifth starter on Tuesday, manager Scott Servais suggests, “It’s almost certainly likely to be Sam.” Not the most glowing endorsement, but nevertheless the most probably determination.
Tampa Bay Rays: The bullpen just isn’t specifically the strongest element of the Rays’ roster suitable now, as the team’s 4.forty Period in relief ranks twenty second on the time over-all. Considering that June one, it is really a 5.01 Period (25th over-all). Jumbo Diaz was selected for assignment soon after letting runs in back again-to-back again video games this weekend. Justin Wilson of the Tigers may be at the major of the Rays’ would like checklist, but some new arms are obviously on the agenda likely forward. As manager Kevin Income reported Sunday, “(We have) received to have some far better, additional dependable selections.”
Texas Rangers: Alex Claudio pitched a few moments more than the weekend, preserving two video games and keeping the Royals off the board for a few innings. Andrew Cashner suggests Claudio’s general performance has earned him the nickname of Machete, proclaiming, “The very last couple days he is just coming in and slashing fellas down. He is been a distinctive reliever for us this calendar year.” Nonetheless, soon after getting into a tie activity on Sunday, it is really unclear whether or not he truly has a leg up on Matt Bush or Jose Leclerc the place the closer’s career is anxious. Continue to be tuned.
Toronto Blue Jays: Francisco Liriano lasted just two innings on Saturday before leaving the activity, the end result of neck tightness that now threatens — at a bare minimum — his up coming get started. “The additional I threw, it was obtaining even worse. (It) just feels truly sore and restricted,” reported Liriano. “I have no plan what it is.” This personal injury could not only impression Liriano’s probable trade benefit, but also diminish the chance that Toronto would be keen to trade away J.A. Happ. Immediately after all, someone has to pitch for this staff for the rest of 2017.
Washington Nationals: It was sure to come about eventually, although obtaining two probable closers from the identical staff was a little bit of a surprise. On Sunday, the Nationals acquired both equally Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle from Oakland, sending Blake Treinen back again to the staff that at first drafted him in 2011. Both of those pitchers are underneath contract for up coming time as effectively, so although it is really currently unclear which of these arms will shut video games for the rest of 2017, you will find a very good chance the person Dusty Baker settles on this calendar year will be the favored to get the the vast majority of will save in 2018 as effectively.

ARLINGTON, Texas | Morton plunks AL record 4, but Astros beat Rangers 4-3

ARLINGTON, Texas | Morton plunks AL record 4, but Astros beat Rangers 4-3
ARLINGTON, Texas — Charlie Morton couldn’t do much to correct an erratic outing that the Houston right-hander ripped as “bordering on embarrassing.”
George Springer and the Astros found a way to beat the Rangers anyway for a shot at a four-game road sweep of their Texas rivals.
Springer hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning after Morton tied an American League record by hitting four batters, and the Astros beat the Rangers 4-3 on Saturday night.
Morton also issued a career-high six walks as the Astros allowed 10 walks, a season high. But the Rangers tied a club record with 17 runners left on base in a nine-inning game, most in the majors without extra innings this season.
“I got away with not knowing where the ball was going,” Morton said. “It’s a pretty unprofessional outing right there, bordering on embarrassing. You hit four guys and walk I don’t know how many more.”
The hard-throwing 34-year-old who had a 10-game winning streak stopped in his previous start gave up two runs without allowing a hit in the second. The only hit Morton surrendered in 3 2/3 innings was a third-inning double from Ronald Guzman that didn’t factor in the scoring.
After hitting Rougned Odor and walking Robinson Chirinos and Guzman in the second, Morton struck out Shin-Soo Choo before Delino DeShields hit a chopper up the middle that second baseman Jose Altuve fumbled for an error as Odor scored. Nomar Mazara followed with a sacrifice fly for an unearned run and a 2-2 tie.
“He just looked out of whack from the very beginning, delivery, timing, execution,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He was doing things that he never does, hitting left-handers with back-foot breaking balls, misfiring on a lot of fastballs. Just the entire game was a fight for him within himself.”
Reliever Brad Peacock hit Isiah Kiner-Falefa with his final pitch in the sixth to break Houston’s franchise record with five hit batters.
The Rangers also set a club record by getting hit five times but the worst hitting team in the majors with runners in scoring position went 1 for 17 in those situations. Texas stranded 12 runners in scoring position. The Astros struck out 10, six of them called.
“It’s not that they weren’t in the fight,” Texas manager Jeff Banister said. “We just didn’t get the hits. It doesn’t feel good, but I’ll continue to take our chances. We put 20 baserunners out there. We continue to do that every night, this offense will find a way to spark.”
Tony Sipp (1-0) struck out the first three hitters he faced in the sixth and seventh, and Hector Rondon got pinch-hitter Adrian Beltre to bounce into a game-ending double play for his second save.
Springer’s go-ahead single landed just in front of a sprinting Joey Gallo in left field against Jose Leclerc (1-2) after Guzman’s RBI single had pulled Texas even in the fifth.
Max Stassi homered leading off the fifth for Houston, and Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel had run-scoring hits in the first.
THAT’LL LEAVE A MARK
According to research from the Rangers, only two other pitching staffs have combined to hit five batters in a game since 2002. Both were in 2017: San Diego against St. Louis and Toronto against Atlanta. In baseball-reference.com archives dating to 1908, the 2001 Angels were the only other team to win a game after hitting at least five batters.
SHORT HOPS
The last AL pitcher to hit four batters in a game was Orlando Hernandez with the Chicago White Sox in 2005. Morton now shares the franchise record with the late Darryl Kile, who hit four against St. Louis in 1996. … Texas’ Jurickson Profar was hit twice in a game for the first time in his career. … Three of Houston’s walks went to Choo, who reached base in his 25th straight game to extend his majors-leading streak. … The Rangers have twice stranded 17 runners in a nine-inning game, most recently in 2007.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Astros: SS Carlos Correa missed a third straight game with soreness on his right side. Manager A.J. Hinch said Correa could be available Sunday if he doesn’t start, and the club is optimistic he will be ready after an off day Monday.
Rangers: SS Elvis Andrus took live batting practice for the second straight day and will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Monday. He broke his right elbow when he was hit by a pitch April 11 against the LA Angels.
UP NEXT
The Astros go for a four-game sweep with LHP Dallas Keuchel (3-8, 4.13 ERA), who is tied for the major league lead in losses. The 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner pitched seven scoreless innings against Texas in his most recent victory May 13. LHP Matt Moore (1-5, 7.47) is 0-3 in six home starts for the Rangers after an NL-leading 15 losses last year with San Francisco.
