Berry-berry
It is not the norm to have wineberries and blackberries at the same time that raspberries are still ripening. (not to mention the blueberries in higher elevations). However, here we are.
Tumblr media
Black raspberries, wineberries (the red ones) and blackberries. Wild blackberries are a bit smaller than what you’d see at a grocery; in this picture they’re hard to tell apart from the raspberries. Technically red raspberries also grow in this area - but I’ve only ever seen one bush in the wild. If they’re here at all, it must be in very specific locations.
   Anyhow. YUM!

Pig weed
Tumblr media
My 83 year old Nana calls this “Hog’s Weed, that’s what Daddy would call it. The horses eat it and all things eat it”. She is a Southern Maryland native who grew up living off the land before it was “cool”. Her Mother and Father taught her to forage and what the local plants were called. A quick Wikipedia search proves this plant called is indeed Amarantus Retroflexus, or commonly known as “red-root pigweed”. It is native to the American tropics, but has become widespread on most continents. And it can grow over 9ft high which gives it quite the stature of observational curiosity on one’s landscape. The leaves, boiled and eaten with garlic, chili peppers, coconut and turmeric are an Indian dish known as thoran. It is high in calcium, phosphorus, protein, and iron. It’s seeds can be eaten raw or cooked, and used in bread, cereal or as a thickener. An exceptionally nutritious fodder if used sparingly.

Well it's that time of year again, when I and various family members pile into the car and drive to Central to stock up on free fruit.
This year we also found some wild raspberry plants, with actual berries on them!
Now for at least a week of bottling...

Your friendly Troubadour is still under the weather but one must find subsidence.  A popular activity is foraging for food stuff.  But be warned it is not an activity to do without knowledge.  So if you choose to participate in this fun outdoor activity do so either after extensive research or even better with the assistance of a knowledgeable guide or forager.  I'm very new to foraging and hope to soon go on a trip with a knowledgeable group of friends in the spring.
I hope my musings find you well.  Safe travels and godspeed.

EAT your Christmas Tree🎄 Yes really! But please note: - Only spruce and fir trees are edible - Yew trees are poisonous and should not be eaten - If you're making tea - make sure you've bought an organic or FSC-certified tree as many commercial trees will have been sprayed with chemicals to kill pests or disease and to keep them alive longer Ideas to eat your Xmas tree include: - Pine needle cured salmon - Spruce ice cream - Spruce jam - Smoked Xmas tree vegetables - Fir needle tea #xmas #forage #forager #foragedfood #foraging #foraginguk #ukforaging #foragedfoods #foragingforfood #xmastree https://www.instagram.com/p/CmhHtOcMDaM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The whole of this combe was covered with wild garlic, the smell was quite something! I picked a few leaves and once I got home I washed and chopped them finely and put them into butter to make cheese and wild garlic scones! The wild garlic really adds a delicate flavour to it that makes the scones that little more spring-like.

Raspberry
Just got back from the daily raspberry-picking. It is cloudy and cool today, which made things quite pleasant. My Aunt L, daughter K, (the dogs) and I drove up a cell tower road over some fairly extreme ruts and ditches. There are only a moderate number of raspberry bushes up there, but thousands of wineberry bushes (unripe, as yet). The dogs ran riot while we poked slowly through the bushes looking for black/purple sweetness. I walked all the way to the top to check on a few orchard trees that are up there, apple and peach. They are bowed down with fruit; I’d better get back up there asap to thin them out before their developing weight breaks branches. (oh, good, a new time-sensitive chore!)
Walking back down toward the other, picking berries along the way, I found broken bushes where a bear had crashed through. Then I heard a low-pitched buzzing and - oops! - saw the broken paper wasp hive. I backed away slowly. As the Last Unicorn said about harpies, “Don’t run! it attracts their attention.”
Both dogs seemed to be unbothered, so I assumed that the bear was not nearby. Lady had dirt all over her face and a happy tail. The bucket slowly filled with berries. The best, plumpest one seem to reliably grow on the most ridiculously steep slopes; I was scrambling along trying to stay on my feet, reach w-a-y out for berries, and Not Spill The Bucket.
Walking back to the car the dogs suddenly charged ahead. There are - people? Walking through the woods toward us? Oh, neighbors, no problem. Two retired neighbors regularly walk the cell tower road to stay in shape.
Oops. will have to finish later.

just added two locations to this today so i wanted to remind everyone about fallingfruit. it's a collaborative, community driven map of edible forage with pinpoints all around the world directing you to wild edibles growing in your area.
some places have more pins, some have less. if there's not many in your area and you know somewhere that wild forage grows, add it! you don't need an account and can remain completely anonymous while enabling others in your area to collect fresh food that may otherwise not be noticed or enjoyed by anyone, and you may find some spots where you live that you didn't know about before :)

Foraging culinary mushrooms like boletes from random places on university campus really trains you to have complete confidence in the fact that you look like a little garden gnome and anyone that questions you will feel like the stupid one
