Summary: Five snippets of Joel's birthdays throughout his life.

Warnings: angst, sadness, mentions of blood/death, bad fathers, more sadness, did i mention depression?

A/N: i literally don't know where this came from- i guess i was in an extra emo mood today. anyway i know nothing about the game joel or his backstory, this is just based on my own headcanons about show joel. most of it is made up just for angst fun! this is something kind of different for me so im nervous to post it, pls let me know if you liked it!

i. 

For his ninth birthday, all Joel wants more than anything is a day out with his father. He begs, whines, pleads, until finally his dad agrees to take him hunting that weekend. Joel could barely sleep the night before–his dad had never let him go on one of his hunting trips, saying that Joel was too young, that he’d scare all the game away.

His dad shakes him awake early the next morning, before the sun’s even risen, to pile into his pickup and make their way deep into the woods. His dad pulls out a rifle from the bed of the truck, something big and heavy, but when Joel asks if he can hold a gun, his dad just laughs, a cruel little thing. Gives him a pocket knife, says you can hold onto this one–don’t lose it, now. He takes his responsibility more seriously than anything else in his short life. He runs his finger along the edge of the open blade lightly, just to see what would happen. A bead of blood emerges where he dragged the knife, but he just sucks the wound clean and keeps his mouth shut.

It’s kind of boring, sitting behind the trees and waiting for something, anything, to come walking by. He looks up at the trees above them, the way the leaves are just beginning to lose their green tint–any day now they’ll fall off. His father is silent, eyes never settling in one spot for too long, and finally he grunts here, you take this shot. Holds the scope of the rifle up to Joel’s eye–the gun is so much heavier than he expected, digging into him as he tries to balance it on his small shoulder.

Take a deep breath, focus now, his dad says. only pull that trigger when you’re sure. Through the tiny lens of the scope he can see a small gray bunny sitting up in the grass, nose twitching in the air like it can sense the danger it’s in. He shifts the gun again, taking a deep breath, trying to hide his shaky hands. Lines up the bunny’s head within the scope, finger twitching on the trigger, almost there, but then–

Can’t do it, dad, he whispers. He feels his eyes fill with tears and he can’t help the small sniffle that emerges. His dad is silent. Takes the rifle back from him, and quicker than Joel can process, lets a shot ring out into the early morning air. It’s explosive, the acidic smell of the gunpowder and smoke making him hack out a cough. His father drops the rifle next to him and comes back with the bunny in his hand, dead. Joel can’t stop staring at the shattered skull, the trail of blood following his father back to the car, where he’s muttering no son of mine’s gonna be a sissy.

His mother makes rabbit stew for dinner that night. He never asks to go hunting with his father again, and his father never offers.

ii.

For Joel’s sixteenth birthday, he begs his parents to let him have a car. They agree, say sure, as long as you can come up with the money yourself. So he does the dishes for a month without complaint. Sweats outside every other weekend mowing the lawn, watching Tommy ride his bike around the neighborhood with his friends. Goes door to door, asking if anyone has any odd jobs they need help with. Finally, a week before his birthday, he scrapes together enough money–change from the couch cushions, lawn mowing money, old Christmas money, everything he’s worked for–and eagerly presents the envelope full of cash to his parents. His dad just looks at him with a brow raised. What’m I gonna do with that? and Joel says I know exactly which car I want.

It’s a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, a black two-door muscle car that just screams badass. He’d found a good deal on one in the for sale section of the newspaper; some old guy looking to get rid of his pride and joy he doesn’t use anymore. It’s in good condition, right under 40,000 miles, engine purring like a dream. Barely drove it, to be honest with ya, the old man tells him. He lets Joel take it for a spin around the block, engine thrumming and rumbling beneath him, wind whipping through his hair. He doesn’t even hesitate when he gets back to where the old man is sitting on the porch watching him in amusement. I’ll take it, he said, and that was that.

The night of his birthday, he decides to take his new car on the backroads, headlights flashing and bouncing down the long dirt road. He feels invincible, untouchable, a flask of whiskey stolen from his dad on the seat next to him, the radio barely drowning out his whoops and hollers of excitement. He takes a sharp turn, then another, loving the way his heart practically beats out of his chest with the excitement of it all. Another quick corner and the flask falls to the ground–he reaches down, takes his eyes off the road for just a second and crunch, there goes the front of the car against a tree. 

He’s dazed, head throbbing with the impact and liquor. Crawls his way out of the front seat to look at the damage to the front of the car. It’s totaled, hood crumpled, windshield cracked in half, tires popped. He can’t stop staring at the smoke rising from the engine up into the clear night sky. He walks home in a daze, only realizing once he’s there that the bone of his ankle has gone clear through the skin.

He doesn’t drive for a long time after that.

iii.

He wakes up on his twenty-third birthday to the sound of a baby–his baby–crying. Panic fills his lungs as he sprints out of bed to her room. She’s lying on her back in the crib wailing up a storm, little face practically purple with the force of her cries. He picks her up gently, shushes her, walks around the room with her. There’s an empty bottle in the corner of the crib, but no sign of her mother.

He treads downstairs slowly, hushing Sarah as she whimpers in his arms. The house is empty, eerily quiet, the hum of the refrigerator whirring as he makes his way through the living room. On the kitchen table is a small brown box, nothing special, with his name scrawled in handwriting he’s familiar with. He sinks into a chair, careful not to jostle the now-sleeping Sarah, and opens the box. Inside is a handwritten letter, and a ring he would recognize anywhere–he’s the one that bought it. His heart sinks, breath catching in his throat.

He has to read the letter three times, his hands are shaking so hard. He knocks the box to the floor, ignoring the clink of metal on the kitchen tile. His chest feels tight, like he can’t get a full breath in or out, and instead he focuses on listening to Sarah’s quick little breaths, the way her eyes flutter under her eyelids as she sleeps. He traces a finger over her soft cheek, pushes the tiny ringlets away from her face. Just looks at her, at the way her tiny hand grasps his finger, so small in his arms.

That’s how Tommy finds them later that morning when he bursts in the door with a half-eaten bagel in his mouth, grumbling that he’s been waiting out there for ten minutes, didn’t ya hear me honking?–Joel and Sarah, together at the kitchen table, a wedding ring forgotten on the floor.

iv. 

On his thirtieth birthday, he gets a call from his mother, hysterical and blubbering. He can’t make out what she’s saying at first, begs her to take a breath, ma, slow down. She does, just enough to tell him that his father had a heart attack that morning and was taken to the hospital. Tommy calls him five minutes later, saying get up here, it’s not lookin’ good. He gets dressed in a daze, begs the woman next door to watch Sarah just for a little while, and then he’s off.

The antiseptic smell hits him right as he walks in; he wants to cover his mouth, he wants to turn around and leave, but he forces his feet forward. Asks the receptionist in a low voice he doesn’t recognize for his father’s room number. She points him down the hall, flashes him a cute little smile, one he doesn’t bother returning.

His mother and brother hover in the corner of his father’s room, faces pinched. He greets them in a daze, trying to avoid looking at his father’s weak body lying in the bed. The steady whoosh of the breathing machine, the beep…beep…beep of the heart monitor echo in the tiny room. He’s never seen his father this vulnerable–he looks tiny in the massive hospital bed, skinny arms and legs and gaunt face. All he can do is look at him.

Two weeks later, when his mother finally makes the decision to take his father off life support, he goes peacefully, one last rattling breath and then–it’s over. He feels a lightness he hasn’t felt in a long time, maybe in forever. Doesn’t go to the funeral, but feels guilty enough to show up to the wake afterwards. His mother doesn’t mention his absence, but Tommy’s anger is enough for the both of them. As he leaves later that night, she presses something into his hand, curling his fingers around it.

His father’s watch, the one he’d never taken off. Joel rubs his fingers along the rough material of the army green strap, clasps it around his wrist with shaky hands.

v. 

He wakes up on his sixty-third birthday to a cold house, much colder than he’s used to. He’s confused for a moment and then remembers where he is–his new house in Jackson. It takes him a minute to get out of bed, ignoring the aching of his bones and the stiffness in his joints. It’s a process just to get dressed, his fingers frozen from the cold and most likely arthritis. By the time he heads out the door, the sun is high in the sky, warming away the morning chill. Plenty of people are out and about this afternoon, scurrying from door to door or just enjoying the late September sun. He stops by Tommy’s, who’s out on patrol, says hello to Maria and the little terrors running around the house.

At the greenhouse, he chats with the young woman working there, sweet-talks her into letting him take a few late-season blooms. Her cheeks are pink when she hands the bundle of flowers to him and he drawls out thank you, darlin’, giving her a quick wink before he slips away. He takes his time walking out to the edge of town–not that he has much of a choice these days. The sun peeks out above the mountains, cutting down on some of the autumn chill that he’s still not used to, even after twenty years in Boston. The weather here is even more unpredictable, icy and -20 one day and sunny and 50s the next. He’s grateful that today seems like a nice day, probably one of the last before winter hits. 

He opens the rusted gate, letting it slam shut behind him, not noticing or caring how loud it is. His feet take him down the worn path he knows so well, weaving in between various headstones and memorials. He finds the one he wants, brushing a few leaves away and placing the bouquet of flowers down gently. His knees crack when he kneels down, moisture soaking through the legs of his jeans, but he doesn’t notice. 

Sarah Miller, Beloved Daughter, Niece, Friend, the stone reads. There’s a butterfly carved into the upper corner. The stone is a light gray marble, the kind that sparkles subtly when the sunlight hits it just right. He runs his hand over the smooth stone, the sunken letters. Closes his eyes and lets himself feel, for the first time in a long time.

Hey, babygirl, he says. And that’s how he spends the rest of the day, finally with his daughter again.

BONUS:

On what he thinks is his fiftieth birthday, Joel wakes up slowly, in no rush–a luxury now that the world has gone to shit. In the haze before fully waking up, he registers the sounds of someone moving around his kitchen. When he closes his eyes again, he pretends it’s Sarah, making him breakfast just like she did on the last birthday he would ever have with her.

He pulls a worn flannel on and shuffles out to find Tess sprawled out at the kitchen table. The smell of coffee draws him in–if sleep is a luxury now, coffee is practically unheard of. There’s even a small bowl of sugar, and he wonders how many ration cards she gave up for that, too. She gives him a small smile, tells him happy birthday, you old man, and he grumbles and hides his smile behind the top of his mug.

Three days later, when they’re waiting in a safe house outside the QZ, his foot catches on a crumpled piece of paper–a card, worn down and missing one corner. The print is barely legible, but he squints and focuses on reading the front: You still look 21… from a distance! A tiny cartoon man stands in the middle, waving. He ignores the handwritten message on the inside. He snorts and Tess turns to look at him, raises an eyebrow when he nods his head to the card, ignoring the flutter in his chest when her face lights up with a wide grin. She peels it off the floor, this crusty disintegrating piece of paper, says huh, would ya look at that, and shoves it in his back pocket when she thinks he’s not looking.

He thinks about that card, when he’s out of the QZ, long after Tess is gone, and adds not keeping it to his long list of regrets.

Fight or Flight

Part 2

“For years the outside world has controlled the narrative,” said the mayor. “that we were the bad guys. That we were always in the wrong. Now it’s time for us, the people of Anocanie, to take control, and to show the world who the real bad guys are.” Hundreds of thousands of observers cheered the mayor on, as a flashy silver limousine pulled through a road dividing the crowd.

Before the mayor entered the limousine, he sipped his margarita. “Now I will depart, but before I go, here are my words: once we begged the world to stop; now it is time for their reckoning. They will be on their knees. Before I, Mayor Brandy Hughsonnes, meet the hospital bed, the world shall meet its grave.”

Two motorcycles chased a frantic limousine up the winding, noisy roads climbing up and through the hillside, coughing out puffs of gas. One was tangerine and blueberry, and the other was an ashy gray, both smeared in rust. The motorbikes chased a limousine. Fords and Chevys swerved off the road, diving hood-first off the cliffside. Two sweaty, foul-mouthed riders cursed.

They barely steered away from gigantic trucks, crashing into the tunnel. Greasy, smelly oils leaked onto the wheels of their motorcycles, the wheels catching fire as more smoke was hurled from the engines. Steamy, agitated bursts of warm flames charred their gray jackets.

The empty cycles blocked the oncoming traffic. From the roof of the limousine, the drivers spotted two masked Air Force vets, wearing shiny, reflective glasses, stomping on the glass skylight with spiky boots. The bikers jumped away, before the limousine veered from the smoldering bridge, plunging into a river. One of the bikers, Dorothy Hoffs, looked over the edge. “They’re not a problem anymore, Armstrong.”

Jessie said, “Tell that to The Superpeople. They will not be happy.”

“I am not happy.” Everaine sipped her margarita. “You killed a town’s mayor and his innocent chauffeur. You weren’t successful. The mayor was a valuable asset.”

“He wasn’t exactly innocent,” Jessie said. “The mayor’s valet has dealt with crime before.”

“You are both irresponsible,” muttered Everaine. “You have proven you cannot be trusted with anything. From here on out, myself, Stink’n’fart, and Malcolm Loudmouth: the only remaining members of The Superpeople, will watch you closely.” Her image flickered out, and the screen went black.

Jessie demanded, “We will not allow ourselves to be governed. This is like that Avengers movie all over again.

Dorothy untied her scarf. “The way I see things, we need to call in the wolf pack early. The assembly of The Alpha Team might happen earlier than planned, with The Superpeople and the mayor’s thugs and all.”

“The mayor’s goons is one thing.” Jessie said, unzipping her flight jacket. “The mayor survived the limo wreck. The police couldn’t find his body.”

“The mayor is still out there…” Dorothy scratched the bridge of her nose. “or maybe not. Maybe he died in the crash. We can’t be sure he’s alive until we have more evidence he wasn’t chargrilled then drowned.”

“He was seen exiting the crash site, Dorothy. And with another person too, and it wasn’t his chauffeur, because he’s confirmed dead.”

“Then who is it, Armstrong?”

Then Jessie calmly explained, “Rumors and speculation based on blurry security footage are all we have. The fingerprints at the site match those of a man named Jack Goldman. The problem with this theory is, Jack Goldman died of a cardiac arrest two months ago. Or so we thought.

“The coroner reviewed the case, Jessie, and there’s no proof he died either. His heart rate went back to normal, but it wasn’t acknowledged, and the doctors didn’t resuscitate him. The doctors were sued and arrested for malpractice.” She opened the refrigerator.

Dorothy removed several tupperwares, and set them onto the kitchen counter, and said, “The mayor is out there, and Jack is helping him. The mayor has control over hundreds of thousands, and Jack Goldman is a multimillionaire; imagine trying to kill them later, when just chasing them now is like playing cat and mouse, and besides, they will stand in our way.”

Jessie frowned. “Hoffs, the mayor is dead. Jack Goldman is dead.”

“But they’re alive.” Dorothy took a swig from her vodka. “They’re out there, Jessie.” Gargantuan orange, yellow, and red fireworks followed by pale, smoky ash blinded their windows. “What is it now?”

“Darn it. It’s lizards… and werewolves.” There were pale green, almost zombified men with scales running down their spines; their whole appearance resembled geckos, with long, slithery tongues and they squirmed on all fours like reptiles, and incomprehensible babble, and smoke, flame, and ash dribbled from their tongues, and alongside them, fleece abominations boasting silver fangs. These lizards’ nails were infused with toxins which, when released, would cause insanity, then a slow death.

Bystanders were paralyzed with fear; even otherwise, the lizards had a genetic defect which allowed their googly-eyes better vision. “Darn it,” Jessie mumbled, gripping steel dual-pistols. “The coroner isn’t gonna be find us dead in our own apartment.”

“You’re right.” Dorothy unsheathed her daggers, and with the butt end, shattered the window of the complex. “We’ll go down fighting reptiles and dogs, but at least we’ll go down fighting.” Jessie and Dorothy plummeted down the building, landing softly, as their parachutes fluttered off.

Jessie muttered, “Hoffs, fight this one back-to-back again.”

“Got you.” Dorothy stabbed a werewolf in the chest, gore discharging from its chest.

“Look out behind you.” Jessie socked a lizard with the butt of her pistol.

Dorothy whipped around, and sunk her daggers into an abomination’s chest, skewering its heart like a greasy, undercooked kebab. “We’re gonna die. We’re being overrun.”

“No, we won’t,” Jessie bellowed, ceaselessly emptying her pistol into an agitated, fleshy monster. The writhing abomination had even more unique, hideous features, resembling a reptile and werewolf’s child, with a lizard’s scales running through a wolf’s fur, and a wolf’s focus, yet with goofy eyes; it walked like a man too. “I might be out of ammo, but I’m not losing to the Green Goblin and an oversized furry.”

Dorothy lobbed her daggers, catching them by the hilt as they boomeranged. “Jessie, plane!” Police sirens boomed; a helicopter lingered over them, and an echoey ringing. “Jessie, get on the plane!” Jessie and Dorothy hurried up the rope ladder, into the steel hull of the copter.

Jessie sheathed her pistols. “We made it, Hoffs. Pilot, take us home.”

“You’re not going home,” said Everaine. “You’ve impressed us. We’re going to have a talk at The Superpeople HQ.”

"Don't hurt him!"

The plead was barely heard over the much louder crying coming from Junior. Said seven-year-old was being held by an alien, a knife held close to his throat. The alien snarled, claws tightening around the knife handle.

"You know what I want, Pines!" He snapped. Junior let out another shriek and a bit of blood seeped out from where the knife was.

"Stanf'rd!" Fiddleford gasped, clutching onto his arm.

"I know, I know!" Ford bit his lip. "Alright, I'll give the energy source back! Just let go of Junior, please!"

"Energy source first!"

Ford scrambled to take off his backpack, opening it and digging through to find the energy source. He pulled it out and held it up.

"See it? Let go of Junior and you can have it back," Ford said. Junior continued to sob in fear, shaking heavily. The alien shook his head.

"Energy source first," he repeated.

"Ford, just set it down-" Fiddleford begged.

"How do we know he'll keep his word?" Ford questioned, watching the monster.

"How do I know you're gonna keep your word?" The alien asked, glaring.

"You're holding a knife to my fucking son's throat, that's enough reason!" Ford snapped.

"...alright, fine."

The alien let go of Junior and let him fall to the ground. He cried, holding his hands to his throat. Ford quickly hurried over to pick him up, leaving the energy source in his place. He carried Junior back over to Fiddleford, and the two of them began fussing over him as the alien left.

"Honey, let Daddy get a look at yer throat," Fiddleford said softly, lightly gripping Junior's hands and prying them away from the wound. Ford frowned, rubbing Junior's arm. "Alright, 't's not too bad... we can bandage it up."

He pulled off his scarf and wrapped it around Junior's throat to keep it from bleeding. They walked a bit before finding a spot to rest. Junior was still crying, although not as heavily. He hiccuped, rubbing at his eyes. Ford sat him in his lap, slowly unwrapping the scarf. Fiddleford tended to the cut, topping it with a dinosaur bandaid.

"How're you feeling, buddy?" Ford asked softly, holding Junior close. The boy shrugged, clinging to Ford's hand.

"Ah'm so sorry we let 'im getcha, hun," Fiddleford murmured, scooting over and holding Junior's face.

"I-it's ok, Daddy," Junior sniffed. "N-not yer fau-fault."

"Oh, Junior," Ford sighed, hugging him tightly. Fiddleford hugged the two of them, kissing the top of Junior's head.

Junior looked around the marketplace, bored. His dads were talking to an alien at one of the stands, but Junior didn't know what was going on, so he didn't pay attention. He spotted a fruit cart not too far away- or what he assumed was a fruit cart, even though he didn't recognize any of the food.

So he waddled over to the stand, away from his dads. He looked at the fruit, grabbing one. It was purple and oddly shaped, but Junior was hungry, so he bit into it. He grinned at the loud 'Crunch!' noise it made, and he sat down and continued to eat it.

Suddenly, a large tentacle wrapped around Junior's wrist, making him squeak in surprise and drop the fruit. The alien was yelling nonsense (well, it sounded like nonsense to Junior, he didn't have the collar thing his dads had) as he yanked Junior to his feet. The toddler shook slightly, confused and scared at the alien yelling.

The alien tugged at his arm, and Junior flinched and whimpered, starting to cry. The alien slammed his hand on the counter, pulling out a tool similar to a saw. Junior cried louder, trying to get away.

The loudest scream came from when the saw cut into his wrist. Junior had never felt pain this bad, and he didn't want to. This was by far the worst boo-boo he had ever had, and why wasn't Pa there to help, because he always came to help when he started crying, but the pain wasn't stopping and just got worse-

And then suddenly he was yanked up, and he couldn't see why because his eyes were squeezed shut, and he kept crying and holding his wrist, and it was wet and sticky and he didn't like it. And there was yelling, but Junior couldn't understand any of it, it was all in that same gibberish that the alien had been yelling.

And then he was moving, somehow, but the pain was overbearing and he couldn't focus on how he was moving, only that he was and someone was pulling his hand up and wrapping something around his wrist. And he was still crying and screaming and clinging to the fabric by his side, and it occurred to him at some point that this must be his pa, and he was here to help make the pain better.

Only that didn't happen until they had settled into an old abandoned building. And his pa set him down and hugged him close, and Junior felt a little bit better, knowing he was there, and his dad took his hand and looked it over and wrapped it up so it wouldn't hurt anymore. Although the bandaid Daddy had to use to cover the boo-boo was boring, so he put a dinosaur one over it.

And after all that, Junior was really sleepy, so his pa held him close and Daddy sung a lullaby, and he felt nice and safe, and his wrist didn't hurt as bad anymore, so he curled up in Pa's lap and closed his eyes and fell asleep.

Ford looked up at Fiddleford, still rubbing Junior's back. Fiddleford looked severely distressed as he watched Junior.

"He got hurt, Ford," Fiddleford said quietly.

"I know, Fiddleford."

"Really really bad."

"I know, I know."

"He don't deserve that," Fiddleford said. "He's just so little- he don't deserve t'be hurt like that."

"And I agree, but... it's going to happen, Fidds. He's gonna get hurt, we're gonna get hurt."

"But this was avoidable! We could'a been watchin' 'im!" Fiddleford cried.

"So we know for next time," Ford held his hand. Fiddleford sighed and nodded, squeezing Ford's hand.

"Yeah. Next time."

Junior winced, leaning back against the wall of the building and panting heavily. He listened as the group of alien hunters passed outside. He sighed in relief, before noticing a sharp pain in his forehead, right above his eye. He reached up to feel it and pulled his hand back down, dipped in blood.

"Shit," he mumbled, staring at the red. Something must have gotten him- although only by a bit. The wound didn't feel too deep. He took off his glasses, rubbing the blood out of his eyes and digging through his bag. Anura poked their head out, croaking.

"Hey, An," Junior patted their head. "Don' worry, I'll be fine."

He took a few minutes to treat himself and bandage up the wound. Anura leaped out and settled in his lap as he rested. Now all Junior had to do was sit and wait. Hopefully soon his dads would send coordinates with where they would meet up.

Unless they had gotten hurt...

Junior shook his head, ignoring those thoughts. He couldn't think about that. They always turned up ok. Ten years in the portal, Junior thought he'd know that. Or maybe the pattern would be enough to comfort him. Surprise surprise, though: it never was.

But soon enough, the device his dad had built buzzed. He had made one for each of them, for when they accidentally got separated. They could send coordinates or maps to where they would meet back up. He looked at the screen. They weren't too far away. And by now the hunters were far enough away so he could avoid them.

So he packed up his things and tucked Anura into his bag. He pulled his scarf up over his head, hoping to hide his face, and he headed out. It wasn't too long of a trek; half an hour was all, although bits of pain kept shooting up behind his eye and he had to stop for it to go away.

"Junior!"

He jumped and looked up at the call, seeing his dads and hurrying over. Fiddleford quickly pulled him into a hug, sighing.

"Lord, that ain't ever gonna get no easier," he said, kissing the boy's cheek.

"Dad, I'm fine," Junior insisted. Fiddleford pulled back to look him over.

"What happened there?" He frowned, touch lingering over the bandage above his eye.

"I guess the hunters got me a bit. But it's not too bad, promise."

"Was it just a scratch, or is something in there?" Ford asked, kneeling beside them.

"Just a scratch," Junior insisted.

Stanford and Fiddleford trudge up to the portal, holding the cream coloured crash-test dummy in their arms. The almost blindingly electric-blue light of the portal’s centre spins around, almost hypnotically. It’s probably the most beautiful thing the two young men ever saw, but it was hard for Fiddleford to appreciate their work with the impending feeling of doom that sits restlessly in the bottom of his stomach. He can feel a dangerous vibe that radiates from the spectacular lightshow of the portal, and it makes him dizzy. He envies Stanford, who feels nothing but joy and pride for their work. Excitement buzzes within Stanford’s rather short stature. Finally, he’ll be able to prove to the world that he’s more than just a waste of space on this earth. That he’s more than just a doddering, abnormal hunk of carbon matter. Stanford also feels grateful to be able to share this achievement with Fiddleford. His best and only friend. He’s glad that he decided to show up for testing day, despite last night’s… incident. Despite their occasional bickering, Stanford can’t help but feel a small knot in his stomach every time he’s this close to him. He silently wishes that they were something more… no, that would be weird. Fiddleford wouldn’t… would he? Despite that, Stanford revels in the fact that he and his friend are so close to each other in this present moment. Stanford pulls himself from his thoughts when he sees the do-not-cross line blaring from his feet. The portal’s magnetic field gently tugs on their coats and ties. “Ready?” Stanford affirms sternly, loosening his grip on the dummy. Fiddleford nods silently, letting go of it. Stanford lets the dummy float through the centre of the portal, not noticing the strand of rope wrapped around his ankle until it is too late. Until Stanford himself is dragged along with the dummy. He screams, but his screams are only audible for mere seconds, until his head passes through the electric-blue disc of energy that spins rapidly within the centre of the portal. Haphazardly, Fiddleford clenches the rope that is attached to Stanford, keeping him from passing through entirely. “I’ve got you!” Fiddleford cries, but his words are lost to the whirrs of the portal. Even if he was audible, Stanford wouldn’t be able to hear him.

His head is lost in a flurry kaleidoscope of colours that could give a blind man an eyesore. Impossibly possible shapes and patterns decorate the dark, star-spotted sky that is everywhere. A loud and wholesomely dramatic classical symphony echoes throughout the seemingly infinitely seamless expanse. Asteroids slowly orbit the glowing, amber crown jewel of a photo-sensitive’s worst nightmare. And that crown jewel is Bill Cipher. Stanford’s holy muse, except the truth of Bill Cipher is that he is the bane of all that is holy. Stanford can only, helplessly, watch as Bill’s exoskeleton slowly opens up to reveal the nastiest orifice he has ever seen. An orifice used for the sole purpose to feed on a poor soul’s sanity and being. After feeding, Bill’s exoskeleton closes back up and he returns to his familiar, triangular, yellow form. “SIXEEER, DIDN’T YOU KNOW IT’S RUDE TO ENTER SOMEONE’S HOUSE WITHOUT KNOCKING?” Bill’s screechy voice magnified a million times echoes from everywhere, “BUT, I SHOULD REALLY BE THANKING YOU FOR OPENING THE GATE TO A BETTER WORLD! A WORLD THAT IS GOING TO BE FREE TO PARTY FOR INFINITY!” Stanford’s eyes widen in horror as he realises what he had just done. “You-you lied to me!?” Stanford tries to scream, but his words are muffled by the extremely loud symphony that plays throughout Bill’s realm. His mind is racing, and his vision doubles. What is he going to say to Fiddleford? Suddenly, he can feel the rest of his body join his head in indefinite weightlessness. From the corner of his eye, Stanford can see Fiddleford himself floating near him. The blue disc of light that illuminated a small part of this realm has disappeared. Stanford starts to panic and hyperventilate. However, the same isn’t said for Fiddleford, who is bubbling with an anger that muffles the panic and fear. He has long suspected that Stanford had outside help, and he isn’t pleased to find out that his suspicion is true. Angrily, Fiddleford grabs Stanford’s wrist and quickly swims through the zero-gravity expanse to the nearest large asteroid, not even batting an eye to Stanford. Once the duo makes their way to a cave in an asteroid, Fiddleford harshly shoves Stanford to the ground. “I can’t believe it,” Fiddleford bitterly hisses, turning away from the man dressed in a white shirt, dark grey pants and a tan overcoat. “I can’t fucking believe it!” Kneeling on the dusty and rough ground, Stanford clenches his middle in pain. Maroon red stains the tan sleeve of his long overcoat. Hot, salty tears trickle from the corner of his eyes. Stanford tries to wipe them away with his spare hand, but the tears keep falling from his eyes. Then, the most horrifying thing of January the Eighteenth, 1982, is to see blood drip from Stanford’s right eye and onto his six-fingered hand. He can hear every bitter-soaked and anger-filled word that Fiddleford has to say, accompanied with a barrage of swears. Stanford knows this is a rather tense situation, but he silently begs in his head for his assistant to watch the fucking language. He knows that Fiddleford only swears when he furious and livid, and that is just another package of concentrated guilt on Stanford’s chest, put atop the overwhelming fear and unbearable pain of his sustained injury. He wishes that this is a dream and that he could just wake up, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Somewhere, in the back of Stanford’s mind, he knows it to be true. “Fucking turn around and listen to me!” Fiddleford roars angrily, unaware that Stanford is fully conscious of everything he said. However, Stanford obeys and slowly, shakily turns around to face him. His anger melts away and dissipates into nothing when Fiddleford sees the maroon red stain discolouring Stanford’s hand, arm and right eye. He gasps, rather audibly, and covers his mouth with both his hands. Despite his newfound resentment towards him, Fiddleford finds that he still very much cares for his friend’s wellbeing. “I didn’t… know, I was… t-tricked,” Stanford laments, trying his best to stop tears falling from his red (one considerably more red than the other) and puffy eyes, but ultimately, failing. Stanford seldom feels genuinely upset and guilty, and in the back of his head, he’s glad that it’s seldom because it feels so terrible. It’s as if some malicious creature is eating away at him from the inside, from the pit of his stomach, and it only brings him more pain the more he thinks, about his situation, about anything, really. “I—I’m sorry, I’m so s-sorry. I-I’ll try to-to fix this, I’m sorry! P-please… forgive me…” Stanford sobs, constantly stumbling over his own words and frequently being interrupted by his hitched breaths and hiccups. How out of character it is for him to be like this. Dr. Stanford Filbrick Pines, PhD (PhD, PhD, PhD etc.), the prideful, successful and intellectually superior child of Maud and Filbrick Pines, sobbing on his knees and begging for mercy and forgiveness. It’s almost pathetic, really. Fiddleford ponders about what Stanford claims to say. Would a man like him, so gentle and caring and persevering really be plotting to end the world? With a nacho wearing a stupid little bowtie and top hat, at that? He thinks back to the six months they spent together, working on the portal. Every pleasant memory, every time they debated over something stupid, every long night they spent quintriple-checking equations, every event that went south and crashed and burned, and how they were there for each other. He kneels down in front of Stanford and looks him straight into his eyes, and Fiddleford can see, so clearly, the guilt and pain in his cocoa-brown eyes. Fiddleford rests his hands on his shoulders and sighs. This time, he’s in the wrong, “Stanford… I—I’m sorry.” More tears trickle from Stanford, who remains silent, but slightly happier knowing that his friend forgives him. He suddenly lunges forward, despite his injury, and wraps Fiddleford in a tight, desperate hug, crying into his shoulder. “I-I overreacted,” Fiddleford mutters softly, in a feeble attempt to explain his outburst. “No, no,” Stanford replies, muffled from burying his face into his assistant’s shoulder. He gently breaks away from the hug, lifting his head off Fiddleford’s shoulder, “’S okay.” Fiddleford’s electric blue eyes wander down to Stanford’s middle, adorned with a nasty gash soaked in wet blood. He makes quick work of removing his black tie, ignoring Stanford’s befuddled expression. “This should work as a makeshift bandage,” Fiddleford explains, wrapping the long length of fabric around his middle. “As for yer eye…” he scratches the back of his head, “I don’t know what to do about that.” Stanford shakes his head, replying in a soft, but cracked voice, “N-no, don’t worry about it. We should probably find a way out of this place first. Without… y’know, dying.” As much as Fiddleford wants to protest against that suggestion and worry more for Stanford’s eye, he can admit that getting out of Bill’s realm is priority. Quickly, preferably. Fiddleford gets up on his feet and offers a hand to his friend, who takes it without hesitation. From the literal centre of the Nightmare Realm, Bill impatiently scans over the starry expanse of the Nightmare Realm. He knows that Stanford and his assistant are somewhere here, he just doesn’t know where exactly. And that’s exactly why he has henchmaniacs. “SIXER AND HIS PET IDIOT WANNA PLAY HIDE AND SEEK!” Bill shrieks playfully, his voice irritatingly echoing throughout the infinite fabric of the realm. His shrill voice lowers to a dangerously serious tone, “FIRST ONE TO FIND THEM AND BRING THEM TO ME GETS THEIR OWN GALAXY.” Skitter growls and shrill shrieks of monsters and ghouls follow Bill’s statement as his henchmaniacs hurry off to hunt Stanford and Fiddleford down. Bill eagerly watches his minions become smaller and smaller until they’re little dots against the deep, dark blue of the Nightmare realm. He starts to fantasise about what he’ll do to his puppets once he gets his hands on them. Perhaps, kill one of them, and feed on the other’s misery. And it won’t be long before someone will stumble upon that portal, in their basement, and fire is up again. Let it charge, until it’s ready, and finally, Bill will have that whole reality to himself. He fantasises further, imagining how he’ll make that measly hunk of rock, earth and water better, fun. Bill lets himself get so wrapped in his fantasies, he barely notices Fiddleford and Stanford dart past him. Fiddleford glides, swoops and swims gracefully past and through asteroids with ease, Stanford tightly holding his arm, trailing behind him. Every so often, Fiddleford looks back to his friend to make sure he’s okay, which he is, physically, at least. Fiddleford’s mind wanders, as he tries to pinpoint what he’s going to do about their situation. How would they get home? How would they survive long enough to do that? How would they survive at all? These are all questions that blare in his mind, but he doesn’t expect for them to be answered anytime soon. “Fidds!” Stanford’s shriek pulls him out of his thoughts. His eyes dart to where Stanford is pointing, which, in this case, is a large, colour-shifting lard-creature. Its many eyes have little to no white in them, only charcoal-black irises and a thirst for death lies in them. It hones in on the two young men as they start to double back to another asteroid. But Stanford doesn’t move, floating perfectly still, almost… petrified, staring at the insult-to-life as it opens its mouth wide open, its shark-like rows of teeth rearing their ugly heads. “Stanford, what on Earth are you doing!?” Fiddleford sputters, tugging on his hand. There is no response, nothing but the monster’s growls and the loud symphony that continues to play to answer the engineer. Without a second thought, Fiddleford drags Stanford with him through the sea of weightlessness as quickly as he possibly can, not stopping for even a millisecond. He dives into a small crack of a huge asteroid, a crack that leads to a spacy, dark and damp cave that the monster dives right past. Diving into that thin crack had Fiddleford and Stanford landing in a rather awkward position. But Fiddleford quickly dismisses the fact that he’d landed on top of Stanford, more concerned about survival more than anything else. He cups Stanford’s face in his hands and watches as the lime clouds in his eyes slowly dissipate. When he comes to his senses, Stanford starts coughing and sputtering, as if he just resurfaced from being underwater for so long. “Stanford, Stanford, Stanford,” is the only word Fiddleford mutters repeatedly, rather quickly, brushing a hand through Stanford’s brown hair as his coughing subsides. “I-I-I—that… I…y-you?” Stanford babbles lubberly, almost incoherently. He can hear how illegible his own words (if they even qualify as words at all) sound to him, he can’t imagine what they must sound like to Fiddleford. “Shh, slow down, darlin’,” Fiddleford murmurs, gently brushing Stanford’s frazzled hair out of his face. “I-it was like-like the Gremloblin ah-all over again,” Stanford tries to answer again, trying to keep the rate of his speech at a speed that intelligible, but his panic finds a way to reduce his words up to and beyond comprehension. “I-I couldn’t—I couldn’t move! It-it-it-it was t-terrible.” Fiddleford gently pulls Stanford up, and embraces him in some attempt to calm him down, “I’ve got ya, yer safe.” Stanford wraps his arms around Fiddleford in return, murmuring something about not being able to be truly safe ever again. Hushed incoherent sounds reverberate from deeper within the cave, interrupting the shaken duo. However, the sounds didn’t sound menacing. They sounded… scared. “Stanford, let’s check deeper into this cave,” Fiddleford suggests. Stanford nods, deciding against arguing with him. Every time he shunned Fiddleford’s suggestions, it’s always, always gone south. The pair creep deeper into the cave. Fiddleford, not looking where he is walking, trips and tumbles down a short, but steep ledge, pulling Stanford down with him. When they land onto the ground below (with nothing less than a handful of newly formed bruises), they find a shivering group of intergalactic refugees huddled around a strange purple fire, who notice their presence almost instantly. Their leader, a hairy mix between a guinea pig and a pirate, beckons the pair closer to them in a welcoming manner. Fiddleford walks over to the group with trepidation, Stanford trailing close behind him. The creatures took turns in explaining their tale. They explain to Fiddleford and Stanford that they were apparently asteroid miners whose ship was sucked into a dimensional wormhole, and they found themselves lost in the Nightmare Realm like them. A green-scaled, tall and lanky alien with big eyes with almost no white and frills that decorate the top, sides and back of his head with his arm in bandages asks the pair what their story is. Stanford loathes to explain his backstory with Bill, covering his eyes and curling in on himself, leaning against Fiddleford, whimpering. Fiddleford runs his hand through Stanford’s hair as he explains to the asteroid miners that Bill tricked them into building a portal to let him into their dimension. When Fiddleford offhandedly utters the word Bill, the aliens shriek and cover their ears as if he had said something obscene, leaving him confused. The leader of the aliens explains to the pair that Stanford’s, quote-unquote Muse is actually one of the most feared beings throughout the entire Multiverse. They tell him the many legends and theories that circle around Bill Cipher, ranging from how he got his powers to where he came from in the first place. “You see, humies, Bill Cipher took over this place as a hideout for him and his crazy band of cronies, but because rules and physics don’t exist nor apply here, this place is going to either self-destruct or get terminated by an interdimensional superior,” the guinea pig/pirate alien leader reveals to the pair. “That answers why he wanted you to build that portal so badly,” Fiddleford ponders, looking down at Stanford, who is fidgeting with his hands. His eyes remain focused on the magical glittering purple fire. He notices Stanford becoming increasingly more agitated as time passes (on the contrary, time is dead in this dimension). A life-form that looks like a cross between a bug and a gnome feels sceptical towards them, but takes pity on the earth men. The group decides to give Stanford and Fiddleford some rations and a dimension translator. Fiddleford nods as he accepts the donations, incredibly grateful for it. “Is—what’s the chance we-we’d be able to get home?” Stanford asks the group with trepidation. So many pairs of eyes watching him… He feels queasy. “Without a decent Class Four portal device, you’re essentially lost in the multiverse forever,” the green-scaled alien answers without a second thought, “Although, you can jump dimensions through wormholes that pop up suddenly.” The same alien points to the wide opening behind him, leading back outside to the rest of the Nightmare Realm, “Statistics say that a handful’s gonna open up there in a couple of seconds.” Surprisingly, Fiddleford and Stanford didn’t notice that opening before. The two humans bid their goodbyes as they float over the group of wormholes nearby, casting their fates to the wind to discover what new and strange worlds await them. Strange worlds that no being of their species before has ever witnessed. “Those humies won’t last a week,” ζβ02 states to his shivering band of refugee, still grinning from waving them goodbye.

Welcome back

Its a mystery how long its been since i’ve participated here, and im sure to whomever may be reading this that may very well not even be a matter of importance. I guess i came to say, “Hey” I hope all is well and that you’ve said you’re prayers and that even if you can’t say that everything is going your way... If you’re reading this you’re blessed. Blessed with life, blessed to be within a land that allows such freedom of accessible information and forums, blessed to be able to read.. hmm.... maybe these things are too simple for some , for the eye to percieve the blessing in just being, being here. I wish nothing more than for you to marvel at your good fortune ; that it may cause you to become all tingly inside and bring about bursting giggles and laughters. Adversity hates that: contentment. 

  With a degree of understanding , as i understand it, you child of the great i am , like me are an eternal soul in a temporal body , fearfully and marvelously formed out of dust from the earth and the work of the Almighty of Almighty’s hands. 

This next statement may seem controdictory or maybe counterintuitive- i can’t be sure due to my tendency to use big words for their taste and not always for their meaning (i ask for forgiveness for every grammar stickler who may come across my trend of thought- mentorship even if the admonishment comes gently) 

However even more so, to you vessels out there as afore mentioned, i must beg you’re pardon when i state: i dont give a damn who you think you are- with no diminishing of you’re true value which you may be lucky enough to be contiously aware of or not: From the perspective of one who’s essentricism and methedology for forming coping mechanisims amist an era of nieivety to which lack of common sense is most common: i’ve gone from jail cells, probation offices, flimsy friendships once firm for their turn in thier season seemed to fold and fumble once off season had come, and the pain that perices bone pulle me to my knees -the proper place for such an out poor and regurgitation of toxins i’d taken down like tonics for such a number of years prior.... Fuhcet whom you thin you are . because pride always ALWAYS comes before the fall- and if you’ve fallen down count your blessings NOW because you’re not only still on this ball of rock and gas flying through the known universe but THAT TO WHICH YOU’VE BEEN OUTSCOURCEING LIFE has deemed you worthy enough for business. look i can say i’m a christian or i can get in the WORD and show you all the reasons i’m not worthy of such glory. but Glory to Glory 

i was sitting on the inside of a plexy glass frame , looking into the eyes of a broken hearted mother when i found out that someone DIED , like actually relinguished their life to turn mine around. Lord forgive me because i’m not refferencing The Christ who is risen but it is because He is risen and His gospel sunk into a 106 year old man who surely hadn’t gotten glimpse of hair nore hide of me at least 15 years. But his IAM saw the  I AM within me o maybe the great I AM , was just so much within that man that, bewstoeing such great padons, he couldn’t give a damn about What image i was ashamed to say I AM , when fellow inmates looked at me.

I am a part of the system who has crossed over into the system of higher education. Fully funded, I was broken when i would speak to my  homies and fellow criminals, poorly judged and often judgmental addicts, prostitutes, and theifs; “Speak life guys” 

The power of the tounge can also produce life you know...no matter to what you’ve come to think you agree...... and like back when i was breaking down on the side of the road in my American made Ford Tarus mimicking the outside 100 degree weather , filling the resivior with jugs of water enscripted “Watch God Work” ...

i’m not going to lie i felt fake and an ass , and their was this whispering thought in the back of my head screaming “oh shut tf up and give it a rest” even when getting arrested , to its cruelty my only way of protest: Speak life.

I give this gift of memory in remembering my test trials and temptations to just die to a distortion of the lifestyle anyone forknown could’ve imagined for me. Here , a week before Sophemore semester, i’m actually working towards becoming a graduate rather that the next class charge, to which accoridng to the system i would soon be due to graduate 

To beg that with you’re consideration and acceptance you do so in accordance in agreement to the consequenses of the deal which had been cut a few paragraphs up , no backing out now, If you’re sick of breaking own weather on the side of the road or inside of your home , speak these words “ By the power of the tongue I speak life into my atmosphere.”  

Say that then. Speak that thing- too good to be true into existance. For the Great I AM  can surpass what you think yyou can consider you’re wildest dreams. From sweat stains prior to me making my place, to taking my place on the roster. Again i ust ask for pardon even though i’d foarmed ya of my absence of concern towards whatever the FUHCET is you THINK you are cause i thought i was worthless , I was as good as Dead, but today I AM as the Great I AM saw fit , The  blessings that filled once cracked lips : “ The more i speak life, the more i’m beginning to think ‘LIFE’ ; that which one can hold in the mind - I say be encouraged, for as you are , it is sure to come into your hands.....

Well, forgive me for my rant,

and speaking on with such bolddness but how could i be ashamed? 

The same one who deemed me good and blessed me upon creation, has given me such a story , as i sit here thinking of the , How dare i slip into incontentment, When i’ve gotten blessed in ways i never would of dreamed. As nothing more than a vessel made of dirt , it amazes me just how great , how awesome - cause inspite of having not yet been able to see it for myslef, I AM saw me for as i am having ben formed in his hands. And what he as for you in the midst of whatever the deceptions the adversary may whisper , YOU NEED ONLY LISTEN TO THE VOICE  the I AM  has given ya as you continue to

Hi Have a question. My rear bumper was lightly tapped by 17 year old new driver. Damage is minor and cosmetic at $425. My car is only three years old and in perfect condition. The insured provided me all his insurance information and said to file a claim through his dad's insurance carrier. I called local police department 911 line to report minor collision. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. Police officer looked at my rear bumper and refused to make a police report as he said cannot issue a report unless damage is over $1500. I begged the officer repeatedly to please provide me even an incident report or something official like an affidavit as the teenager admitted to officer that he hit my rear bumper. Police Officer simply drove off and left me on the side of the road with a stranger. Of course now four weeks later, the insured and his father have simply ignored phone calls, emails and registered mail attempts by his insurance carrier to verify version. (not sure what version would be needed as my black paint is on his front bumper) I called the insured and his dad hung up on me twice. The insurance carrier told me they are denying and closing out the claim due to insured not responding. They said this is totally legal under Illinois State laws. (basically too bad, so sad) By the way this insurance company has unacceptable rating with state insurance board and BBB. I paid a body shop $425 in cash to fix car yesterday. Do I have recourse as I see my options would be to file a complaint with Illinois Banking and Insurance or file a small claims lawsuit against insured and insurance carrier (but that is an additional $119 court filing fee) Any ideas would be appreciated.""

ok so im 17 1/2 year old male and ive been driving since i was 15 1/2. As of right now im covered under my parents insurance with Mercury auto insurance and i pay $500 for 6 months of coverage ($1000 a year). I am currently covered for the three cars that my family owns 1996 Acura 2.5 TL (my crappy car) 2008 MBenz C300 (moms) 2011 Mazda 3 (Dads) So heres my question.. My car (the TL) is starting to break down and the cost of service is outmatching the value of the car. So ive been saving up to try to get another car and i am going to put down 40-50% of the money and my parents are gonna pay for the rest.
