Introduction:-
As the world becomes more interconnected, individuals often find themselves managing assets in different countries. While diversifying investments globally can be beneficial, it also introduces additional complexities when it comes to filing your Income-Tax Return (ITR). This article aims to shed light on the tax implications of foreign assets and provide guidance on navigating the ITR filing process in such cases.
Taxation of Foreign Assets:-
1.Residential Status and Tax Liability:
Your residential status plays a crucial role in determining how your foreign assets are taxed in India. The Indian tax system distinguishes between residents and non-residents, each subject to different tax rules.
2. Income from Foreign Assets:
Income generated from foreign assets, such as rental income from property or dividends from foreign investments, must be declared in your ITR. This includes interest earned on foreign bank accounts and gains from the sale of foreign investments.
3. Foreign Bank Accounts:
Foreign bank accounts, including savings and fixed deposits, must be disclosed in your ITR, even if they do not generate any income. This ensures compliance with the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
4. Foreign Property Ownership:
If you own property abroad, you are required to report it in your ITR. Additionally, you must account for any rental income, property taxes, and potential capital gains.
5. Foreign Investments:
Income from investments like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds held overseas is taxable in India. It's essential to report these assets accurately, including details of dividends and capital gains.
Claiming Tax Relief:-
1. Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA):
India has entered into DTAA with many countries to prevent the same income from being taxed twice. Under DTAA, you may be able to claim tax credits or exemptions for foreign taxes paid.
2. Foreign Tax Credits:
If you've paid taxes on your foreign income in the country where it was earned, you can claim a credit for those taxes while filing your ITR in India. This helps avoid double taxation.
ITR Filing Process for Foreign Assets:-
1.Choose the Correct ITR Form:
Depending on the nature and extent of your foreign assets, select the appropriate ITR form. For instance, ITR-2 may be applicable for individuals with foreign income.
2. Provide Comprehensive Information:
Ensure all relevant details about your foreign assets, including income earned and taxes paid abroad, are accurately recorded in the ITR form.
3. Attach Required Documents:
Supporting documents such as foreign tax returns, bank statements, property ownership documents, and investment statements should be attached with your ITR.
4. Report Foreign Assets Separately:
Use the relevant sections in the ITR form to report foreign assets. Provide specific details about each asset, including its location, value, and income generated.
Conclusion:-
Effectively managing and reporting foreign assets in your Income-Tax Return is crucial for maintaining compliance with Indian tax laws. Understanding the tax implications and following the correct ITR filing process can help you navigate this complex terrain with confidence. By adhering to the guidelines provided in this article, you can ensure that your ITR accurately reflects your global financial position while minimizing the risk of any penalties or legal issues.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week.
January 19-26 2024
The Energy Department announced its pausing all new liquefied natural gas export facilities. This puts a pause on export terminal in Louisiana which would have been the nation's largest to date. The Department will use the pause to study the climate impact of LNG exports. Environmentalists cheer this as a major win they have long pushed for.
The Transportation Department announced 5 billion dollars for new infrastructure projects. The big ticket item is 1 billion dollars to replace the 60 year old Blatnik Bridge between Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota which has been dangerous failing since 2017. Other projects include $600 million to replace the 1-5 bridge between Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, $427 million for the first offshore wind terminal on the West Coast, $372 million to replace the 90 year old Sagamore Bridge that connects Cape Cod to the mainland,$300 million for the Port of New Orleans, and $142 million to fix the I-376 corridor in Pittsburgh.
the White House Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access announced new guidance that requires insurance companies must cover contraceptive medications under the Affordable Care Act. The Biden Administration also took actions to make sure contraceptive medications would be covered under Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and Federal Employee Health Benefits Program. HHS has launched a program to educate all patients about their rights to emergency abortion medical care under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. This week marks 1 year since President Biden signed a Presidential Memorandum seeking to protect medication abortion and all federal agencies have reported on progress implementing it.
A deal between Democrats and Republicans to restore the expand the Child Tax Credit cleared its first step in Congress by being voted out of the House Ways and Means Committee. The Child Tax Credit would affect 16 million kids in the first year and lift 400,000 out of poverty. The Deal also includes an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit which will lead to 200,000 new low income rental units being built, and also tax relief to people affected by natural disasters
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted for a bill to allow President Biden to seize $5 billion in Russian central bank assets. Biden froze the assets at the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, but under this new bill could distribute these funds to Ukraine, Republican Rand Paul was the only vote against.
The Senate passed the "Train More Nurses Act" seeking to address the critical national shortage of nurses. It aims to increase pathways for LPNs to become RNs as well as a review of all nursing programs nationally to see where improvements can be made
3 more Biden Judges were confirmed, bring the total number of Judges appointed by President Biden to 171. For the first time in history the majority of federal judge nominees have not been white men. Biden has also appointed Public Defenders and civil rights attorneys breaking the model of corporate lawyers usually appointed to life time federal judgeships

"Halal mortgages are compliant with Islamic law, which prohibits the charging of interest, considering it a form of usury.
While other Abrahamic faiths, such as Judaism and Christianity, also view usury as a sin, Islamic financial institutions uniquely offer mortgage and lending products that avoid conventional interest payments."
First, this is insane, creating religious laws to provide Muslims with different tax treatment is against Canadian federal law, second it's immoral, third, if you are going to do this, you make it so everyone is exempt or no one is.
"In its budget document Canada government has introduced a two-year ban on the purchase of residential property by foreign investors, effective January 1, 2023.
The government claims this has been done to ensure there are homes for Canadians to live in and not as a speculative asset class for foreign investors."
Why isn't this permanent? Why are foreign investors allowed to buy any land in Canada? How will this help Canadians?
It doesn't lower the housing market inflation, fucking houses costs in Canada have risen by 800% since the 2000s, and rise at a rate 800% faster than the American housing market.
In 2006, the average house cost anywhere from 90k-260k depending on province, in Ontario, the average price of a single family home in March 2024 was $969'900, the lowest average price across the nation was $720'500.
Oh hey look at that, 800% of 90k is 720k, though 800% of 260k is $2'080'000, which is a common price, just not the average for the top end.
95% of people in Canada can't afford a home, now, 65% of Canadians own homes, but if they were to enter the housing market today they'd never be able to afford one.
And despite this, Trudeau isn't helping Canadians, he's helping his new voter base he shipped in over the past 9 years, giving them religiously based financial reach arounds, while the rest of us have to suffer.
Now don't forget, he's banking on his new "tax the rich" scheme to pan out, because we all know rich people don't flee nations that attempt to impose unfair taxes on them to fund their passion projects.
No no, that'd be crazy.

Borders of Bolivia
« Atlas des peuples d’Amérique », Jean Sellier, La Découverte, 2006
by cartesdhistoire
In the Atacama Desert, which belongs to Bolivia, local rulers ("caudillos") granted concessions to foreigners. Around 1840–1850, Chileans exploited guano and then discovered nitrates. British and Chilean investors founded the port of Antofagasta in 1868, then established an Anglo-Chilean company in 1872 and constructed a railway. The Atacama effectively became a Chilean colony. When Bolivia threatened to confiscate the assets of the company that refused to pay a tax of 10 centimes per quintal of saltpeter exported, the Chilean navy landed in Antofagasta (February 14, 1879). Chile then declared war on Bolivia and its ally Peru: it was the War of the Pacific from which Chile emerged victorious; it ended on October 20, 1883, with the Treaty of Ancón, and Bolivia lost its maritime access. This loss was finalized in 1904 and 1929 when the Chileans ceded Tacna to Peru. In return, Chile constructed a railway from Arica to La Paz.
The liberals in power at the time attempted to retain Acre: situated in the north, this territory assigned to Bolivia in 1867 had attracted many Brazilians during the Rubber Fever. In 1899, Acre proclaimed its independence. When Bolivian troops dispatched there were defeated, Bolivia ceded the territory to Brazil (Treaty of Petropolis, 1903).
To the southeast, Bolivia claimed territory where, under nominal Paraguayan authority, Argentine companies exploited a wood called "quebracho". Incidents between Bolivia and Paraguay were frequent along the demarcation line in the 1920s. In 1931, President Salamanca broke off diplomatic relations with Paraguay. This led to the Chaco War and Bolivia's defeat; an armistice was negotiated in Buenos Aires in June 1935, and the peace treaty – simply initialed – allocated the coveted territory to Paraguay (1938). The final treaty was signed on April 27, 2009, in Buenos Aires.

Donald Trump, in response to a question during a 2020 presidential debate with Joe Biden, insisted that he closed down his bank account in China before his first campaign. But six years’ worth of Trump’s tax records, released Friday, reveal that wasn’t true.
“[I] had an account open, and I closed it,” Trump said with some irritation to moderator Kristen Welker, NBC White House correspondent, in the final debate of the campaign in October 2020. “I closed it before I even ran for President, let alone became President.”
Tumblr media
Rep.-elect Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.), who served as the Democrats’ lead counsel in the first impeachment inquiry into Trump, noted that the former President had bank accounts in China until 2018, from 2015 to 2017, according to his tax records.
“Generally, you only have bank accounts in a foreign country if you are doing transactions in that country’s currency,” Goldman tweeted Friday. “What business was Trump doing in China while he was President?”
Trump, who had accounts in a number of countries and collected income from more than a dozen foreign nations while in office, paid more in taxes in 2020 to the Chinese government than he did in American federal income tax that year, his returns revealed.
Tumblr media
Trump also lied a month earlier to then-Fox News commentator Chris Wallace, who pointedly asked him during the first presidential debate in 2020 if he’d paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017, as The New York Times had reported (which Trump immediately blasted as “fake news”).
Trump angrily responded — twice — that he had paid “millions of dollars.” His returns revealed that indeed he had paid just $750 in federal income taxes in each of those years. Trump and his wife Melania paid no federal income tax in 2020, the last full year he was in office, according to the tax records.
Tumblr media
In addition, Trump did not annually donate his $400,000 presidential salary to charity, as he has claimed. He declared no charitable contributions of any kind on his 2020 returns.
Among the early revelations emerging in Trump’s tax records, some of the most troubling involve his financial entanglements abroad while he was President, “highlighting a string of potential conflicts of interest,” Politico noted.
Trump had multiple bank accounts in a number of foreign countries, and collected millions of dollars in income from more than a dozen nations ― including Panama, the Philippines (whose onetime dictator, former President Rodrigo Duterte, he has praised) and the United Arab Emirates during the Trump administration.
While presidents routinely place assets in blind trusts while they’re in office, Trump’s eldest sons continued to openly operate the Trump Organization and forged deals around the world with nations affected by the Trump administration’s policies and expenditures.
Trump’s returns reveal hefty financial losses in the two years before he became President, some of which he carried forward to reduce tax bills.
Trump enjoyed an adjusted gross income of $15.8 million during his first three years in office. He paid $642,000 in federal income tax in 2015, $750 in 2016 and in 2017, just under $1 million in 2018, $133,000 in 2019 and nothing in 2020.

Whumpril #1: Limp
The lights are out, no longer even the flickering emergency lighting in the corridors and passageways. With a crunch, the spin drive stops too, and Rosie has only a second to grab one of the wall bars before the artificial gravity also disappears. She immediately feels the sicky, travel sickness weightlessness and swallows against the instant nausea.
God, she's a crap spacer. How had she got involved in this?
At least loss of gravity takes the weight off her wounded leg. The sticky warmth of the blood is still there and now there's the uncomfortable sensation of an upwards trickle as the lack of gravity peels blood from her sodden flight suit.
At least life support is still on. At the moment. It must be, it isn't like she has a spacesuit aboard and she's still breathing. She's a barely tolerated hitch hiker, not a member of the crew. Nor will she be if they die here and now.
Hopefully it's nothing but mechanical failure and Gene will get it up and running, but truthfully...it's more likely boarders. Rival pirates; consortium tax boat; Domain forces.
They've got too many enemies and frankly not that many friends.
Rosie curls against the bar she's gripping onto, one knee pulled to her chest in a feotal position, the other dangling uselessly. She considers her assets: oxygen, an empty room, no visible aggressors (yet) and a life time in training in rebellion against the Domain (okay, yes, planetside, in gravity, but she must have some skills).
Unfortunately, to use any of them, she'll have to make her way to a more useful area of the Valjean than the empty corridor outside the crew quarters. Slowly, painfully, leg dragging even in this weightless environment, she limps to the end of the corridor. Weapons locker first. She's a fair shot, even if she is a useless spacer, and she can see it from her position. Or could if it wasn't space-dark. It's not guarded yet.
She drops a hand to the bad leg and bites back a curse in a sharp exhale of air as she touches the wound. Whatever had stopped them, that sudden jolt...it's damaged something deep inside. She doesn't think it can be a foreign body sticking into her. She has the rather unpleasant suspicion that it's her own bone sticking out of her.
Great. Broken bone, bleeding, pain bad enough to make her light headed without the weightlessness, and everyone on the Valjean that might be able to something about the situation likely captured or dead.
She swims forward a few more paces. Blaster first. Plan second.
The pain is overwhelming and she's swallowing her own metallic tears when her hand closes on the edge of the locker. Thankfully, it's just the regular passcode, this isn't restricted and she opens it easily.
Blaster, spare power pack.
Now what?
Well, the bridge and engineering are the places most likely to occupied by whatever forces have overwhelmed them. But if Rosie was one for making rational choices, she wouldn't be on this idiotic ship to begin with.
The choice is made for her as a cut off shout as the sound of metal on flesh comes from her relative above. Bridge then.

During a recent House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing as John Kerry was questioned by Republican Congressmember Brian Mast of Florida:
Rep. Brian Mast: “Are you planning to commit America to climate reparations? That is to say, we have to pay some other country because they had a flood or they had a hurricane or a typhoon or a wildfire.”
John Kerry: “No, under no circumstances.”
Rep. Brian Mast: “Very good. I’m glad to hear you say that.”
Kerry, big D 'climate envoy' & big investor in big oil, seems rather emphatic…
budget cuts to one of the world's largest polluters — the american military industrial complex — could go a long way toward any nebulous reparations these wealthy benefactors are so frightened about.
the world's other top polluter, china now reaches a record high in coal consumption just as temperatures climb to record highs.
the millionaire/billionaire class should not be allowed to hold office.
as us elections approach i see 'news' orgs fawn over which politician or party is raising the most campaign finance, as that is now deemed a rational measure for electoral success.
the millionaire/billionaire class should not be allowed to hold office.
us politicians will rapidly and easily sanction & freeze assets of russian oligarchs. yet us politicians refuse to sanction the tax-dodging corporations that contribute to the climate crisis & growing disparity.
us politicians instead protect the wealthy & enrich themselves. they instead exacerbate social upheaval, scapegoat in guise of 'culture war', eliminating basic human rights, healthcare, access to clean water…
the millionaire/billionaire class should not be allowed to hold office.

I saw a post on Facebook about how we need to tax the rich because the billionaires have a combined net worth of $4 trillion.
First of all the bulk of that net worth is just stocks, a percentage ownership of a company rather than actual money in the bank. You're not going to get $4 trillion of money out of all of them.
Secondly if the IRS could wave a magic wand and turn those assets into $4 trillion of cash, take it all, and not increase spending that would only balance the Federal budget for about 4 years before we go back to operating in the red really hard. Our government is wasting so much money it's impossible to make it sustainable. The idea that we should throw more money at the problem is insane when we do nothing to fix why so much money is wasted. If we just tax more now then get rid of the elected officials who waste our money later we're never going to move on to that second step.
Thirdly the fact that our elected officials spend our money so recklessly while neglecting our needs just proves it's not about whether or not they can afford it. They will spend it on they want to and they don't care about us. Just look at the covid stimmy packages. $7 trillion spent to keep the economy afloat and our stimmy checks came out to less than 10%. Bonuses to unemployment and workmans comp was likely less than another 10%. Most of that money went to "foreign aid" that was laundered back to the politicians and corporate welfare that went straight to the billionaires. But I'm sure giving them another $4 trillion will give us universal healthcare this time.
