We were recently adopted by this sweet little forest cat and finally brought her inside. Meet Nimue, named after the Lady of the Lake in keeping with our Arthurian cats (Nimue, Arthur, and Camelot, Daniel’s childhood cat). She’s such a gentle, loving cat and we’re so happy to have her as part of our little family 🐈‍⬛🐾 #p>

Suddenly got the urge to write a naming ceremony, so here's Pine's!

Stripes padded forward, into the middle of camp, nerves fluttering in their belly like butterflies. They knew what they were going to be—rare was the kitten who didn’t know by the time they were two months old—but still, standing in front of the whole colony, and announcing what they were going to do? It was terrifying.

Beaver Tail caught their eye and gave them an encouraging nod, and they flashed a grateful look at their father. They hoped he might choose them, but they knew he had another litter of kittens on the way, and might want to prioritize being with those kittens, like he had for Stripes.

He stopped in a dusky sunbeam, the colony in a rough circle around him, and felt the sun warm on his pelt.

“I will—” he started, but his voice came out rough and quiet, and he shook his head and tried again. “I will join the Fighters, and my name will be Pine.” He signed as he spoke, paws trembling as he made the slash-like sign for Fighter, but he got the words out.

The colony was silent, waiting for an adult Fighter to claim him. They shared glances, and Beaver Tail nodded at Wolf Claws. The grey and cream tortoiseshell stepped forward into the clearing, and spoke.

“I will mentor Pine. Welcome to the Fighters, kitten of the forest.”

Their voice was calm, and their paws did not shake. They dipped their head to look him in the eyes, and he had to struggle not to leap about like a young kitten.

“Thank you,” they managed to get out, tail swishing in excitement. They padded over to join the Fighters, and Snowdrop pressed against their side, purring. Her pale eyes were big and happy, and she butted her head against theirs.

Sorrel Storm broke up the meeting with a few closing words, but Pine wasn’t listening. He was a Fighter, just like Snowdrop, just like his father, and he would make them proud!
