Malex Fic - You know I love you so
Written for the @yearoftheotpevent June challenge of “(accidental) love confessions.”  I wanted to give Michael and Alex some time to enjoy getting back together and to tell people about their new relationship so I added a few days to 3x09 between Kyle being released from Deep Sky and Alex getting sucking into the Lockhart Machine.  This really just some fluff about them telling everyone they are in love.  Their are brief references to past Miluca and Forlex.  As always, this is a Maria friendly fic.
You know I love you so on AO3
Title from “Yellow” by Coldplay
Summary:  There first date is still a few days away.  It's too early for Alex and Michael to say "I love you."  At least to each other.
Michael sits at the bar, fiddling with his empty beer bottle until Maria comes over.
“Want another,” she asks, already handing him a new bottle.
“Good to see you back in action,” Michael smiles.  “But are you sure it’s not too soon?”
Maria rolls her eyes.  “I wish everyone would stop asking me that.  I’m fine, 100% fine, even certified by both Liz and Kyle.”
“Alright I’ll back off,” Michael holds out his hands in surrender.  “But you can’t blame us for caring about you.”
Maria’s stance softens, and she smiles at Michael.  “I’m lucky I had so many people on my side, I know that.  But what about you?  I heard you and Alex had quite an adventure of your own.”
It’s an opening Michael can’t ignore, but instead of the carefully worded explanation he planned, he blurts out, “ I love him, Alex, I mean.”
“I know,” Maria’s smile gentles.  “He loves you too.”
Michael blushes and ducks his head, but doesn’t deny it.  Alex hasn’t said the words - neither of them have which makes Michael’s confession even more awkward - but Michael feels them.  He feels them in the way Alex kisses him, the way he smiles at Michael’s dumb jokes and the way he holds him in bed, no space between them.
“It doesn’t mean I didn’t love you too,” he says.  And Michael knows that is what he’d really come here to say.  Alex comes before and after - and hopefully forever after - but he doesn’t want Maria to feel like she was just a pit stop along his way back to Alex.
“I know that,” Maria takes his hand off the bottle where he’d been picking at the label and squeezes it.  “I loved you too.  A relationship doesn’t have to last forever to be important.  We had a good thing together, it was what we both wanted and needed at the time.”
“And now?”  Michael can’t help but ask.
“And now we’re friends.  You’re where you need to be and I,” Maria hesitates for a second.  “I’m figuring it out.”
“We have a date this week,” Michael confesses, a disbelieving thrill of excitement in his chest just from talking about it.  “We wanted to tell you first before you saw us or heard about it from someone else.”
“That’s great,” Maria’s smile is wide and genuine.  “I shouldn’t have said when I did before, but I really do expect an invitation to the wedding.”
Michael knows he should brush it off, but he can’t bring himself to pretend it’s not what he’s always wanted so he draws an “X” over his heart, “Promise you’ll be first on the list.”
“I’d better be.  Now go bother your siblings,” Maria points to where Isobel and Max are sitting, having come in sometime while they were talking, “so I can get some actual work done.”
“Here you go,” Kyle sits next to Alex and sets their drinks on the table.  “Boring beer for you and a Pomegranate Pluto Martini for me.”
Alex makes a face when he sees just how bright Kyle’s drink is.  “So this is why you wanted to meet here instead of the Wild Pony?  Because Maria won’t make you drinks that glow.”
Kyle throws back his head and laughs.  “Just wanted to celebrate my clean bill of health. There’s nothing like Taylor Swift Drag Night to make you feel alive.”
It’s a fairly quiet Tuesday at Planet 7, no drag queens in sight yet, but Alex thinks he understands what Kyle is trying to say.  “I’ll drink to that,” he agrees, tapping his bottle against Kyle’s glass.
“I’ll have you drinking one of these by the end of the night,” Kyle says, quickly downing his drink and signaling one of the bartenders for another.
Alex just shakes his head.  He’s been to Planet 7 a few times with Forrest, but it’s not really his kind of place.  Kyle, on the other hand, seems completely comfortable.  He knows most of the staff by name, has glitter highlighting his cheekbones, and Alex is pretty sure he’s wearing lip gloss.  He doesn’t know what to do with any of that, but tonight is supposed to be about Kyle having a good time so he’s trying not to think too much.
“So tell me what I missed,” Kyle prompts him once his new drink has been delivered.
Michael is the first thing Alex thinks because Michael is all he thinks since their kiss on the patio.  He tries to push away the images of Michael’s smile after they kissed and the way his body looked spread out over Alex’s bed.  “Nothing much,” he answers as casually as he can..
“You got laid,” Kyle’s eyes widen, and he points at Alex.  “Who was it?  Is he here?”
Alex looks around quickly just in case Michael showed up while he wasn’t looking even though he knows Michael is at the Wild Pony with Max and Isobel.  He’d declined Alex’s invitation to join him, sending him off with a kiss and a promise to take pictures if Kyle did anything embarrassing.  “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says, doing his best to stonewall Kyle.
“Don’t lie to me.  I know that look.  It’s the same look you had after you hooked up with Forrest.  Is  it Forrest?  Did he come back because he can’t live without you?   He didn’t convince you to run away with him did he? I just got out of coma, don’t leave town again.”
“What is in that thing?  Alex eyes Kyle’s drink suspiciously.  “You shouldn’t be this drunk after one and half drinks.”
“It’s more like four.  I had few before you got here.  Devon makes a mean martini,” he waves his hand carelessly in the direction of the bar and the bartender winks at him.  “But don’t change the subject.  You definitely got laid, and I want to know if you’re running away with some cute guy and leaving me behind.”
“I’m not running away with anyone,”  Alex admits with a huff.
“So it’s not Forrest.  Who is it?  If you don’t tell me I’ll just get Isobel to get it out of you.”
Alex winces because nothing the Air Force taught him would prepare him for being interrogated by Isobel  “It’s Guerin.  Michael,” he corrects.
“Oh, thank God,” Kyle sighs dramatically.  “The sexual tension between you two was getting uncomfortable.”
“There’s no sexual tension,” Alex protests.
“Maybe not now,” Kyle wiggles his eyebrows.  “But the last time we were all out together, and he was playing pool, the things he did with the pool stick to get your attention were very suggestive, educational too, but mostly suggestive.”
Alex blushes, “It’s not like that.”
“It’s not sexual?”  Kyle sounds doubtful.  “Because I know you got laid”
“Ok, yes I got laid,” Alex cuts him off.  “But it’s not just sex.  I love him,” he admits without meaning to.
“Oh,” Kyle’s brow furrows for a second before a bright smile blooms on his face.  “That’s awesome, dude.  I’m so happy for you.”
“Thanks, I’m pretty happy about it too,” he admits, finding it easy this time to say just how much Michael means to him.
Michael walks away from his conversation with Maria smiling and wondering if he should text Alex even if it means interrupting his night with Valenti.  When he gets to their booth, Max and Isobel are having a whispered conversation that stops once he sits down.
“What’s up?” he asks when they both turn to look at him.  He really hopes it's not another Jones emergency.  He wants his date with Alex before the next pile of shit hits the fan.
“Nothing,” Isobel says too brightly.
“You and Maria looked like you were having a pretty intense conversation when we got here,” Max says.
“Not really,” Michael shrugs.  Intense seems like too strong of a word, important yes, but it’s not like they were fighting.  “Just wanted to talk to her about something.  And make sure she’s feeling alright.”
“It’s nice that you are so concerned, but we don’t want you to get hurt,” Isobel reaches across the table and takes his hand.
“Ok?”  It’s a question because Michael really has no idea what she’s talking about.  He feels like he walked into the middle of the wrong conversation.
“Michael,” Isobel sighs and sits up straighter, taking her hand away.  “You know Maria is seeing Greg Manes.”
“Greg’s not the Manes I’m in love with so I don’t see why that would be a problem,” Michael shrugs.
“You mean Alex, right?”  Max asks.
Michael rolls his eyes, “I sure as hell wasn’t talking about Flint.”
“Does this mean we can finally talk about your secret, sordid teenage affair with Alex Manes instead of just hinting about it?” Isobel leans forward eagerly.
“No, and it wasn’t,” Michael makes a face and Isobel raises one brow at him, “sordid.”  He’ll give her secret, but there was nothing sordid about how they felt about each other.  Sure, they fucked it up later, but when he fell in love with Alex it made him feel lighter and hopeful.
“Does he know how you feel or are you still waiting for the right time?  You know the weird emo poet guy is gone,” Isobel tells him.
“Oh, he’s very aware,” Michael smirks, thinking of how thoroughly he’d demonstrated his feeling this morning.
“So you’re back together,” Max, ever the romantic, smiles.
“No,” Michael corrects, but he feels bad when Max’s face falls and Isobel rushes to comfort him.
“Maybe he just needs time,” she says.  “He wrote you a love song after all.”
“We are together,” Michael admits.  “Just not back together.  What we had before is over, and we need to start fresh if this is going to work.  Can’t keep looking back.”
Max winces a little, and Michael knows he’s thinking about his own complicated history with Liz.
“So when did it happen?  Who made the first move?  Was it romantic or one of those fighting until your kissing moments?” Isobel bombards him with questions, most of which he has no intention of answering.
Michael leans back in the booth and sighs.  “It’s still pretty new, and it’s still not sordid,” he makes another face at that word. “Although the sex is,” he trails off and lets out a low whistle.
Max drops his face into his hands, but Isobel claps her hands, “Tell me everything,” she demands.
“Iz, no,” Max looks up and glares at her.
“What, even you can admit they are hot together.”
“And it’s not secret this time,” Michael says, drawing their attention back to him.  “We have a date this week.”
“That’s awesome, man,” Max beams at him.
“When is it?” Isobel asks.  “I’ll need an hour, no two hours, to get you ready.”
“I can dress myself,” Michael objects, looking to Max for support.
Max laughs, “Don’t look at me.  She has a whole section of my closet marked off for date clothes and knows if I don’t use them.  I’m thrilled she has someone else to torture.”
“I wouldn’t have to do that if I could trust you to get changed before you go out,” Isobel scolds Max.
“Hey, I thought women liked a man in uniform.”
“Not that ugly brown uniform you wear.  Now, I remember how Alex looked in his dress blues for the parade,” she smiles dreamily and turns to Michael.  “Does he ever wear that for you?  Because he should.  The role play possibilities are endless.”
It’s Michael’s turn to cover his face with his hands.  “Maybe we should have kept this secret,” he groans, but no one believes him.
After their respective nights out, Alex and Michael went back to their own homes, and while they exchanged texts about how their evenings had gone, they hadn’t seen each other.  Alex was surprised by just how much he missed Michael even after only a few days together, and pleased at how he isn’t afraid to let Michael know it.  So it was no hardship for him to leave early enough to pick up three coffees instead of one and stop by the junkyard on the way to work.
He leaves his own coffee in the car and heads toward the garage with the other two.  As expected it’s Sanders who he sees first.  Alex isn’t sure if he has an alarm system on the driveway entrance or he just spends all his time watching for cars, but he always appears the minute someone gets out of their vehicle.
“Car trouble?” Sanders asks as he makes his way to Alex.
“No, sir, just stopped by to see Michael.”  Alex lifts the coffee cups a little higher in the air.
“So you’re coming by in the daylight now, out in the open, instead of sneaking around hoping no one sees you?”
Alex feels a flush of shame on his face.  He was never embarrassed to be seen with Michael, just afraid, but he knows how he looks.  “You’ll be seeing a lot of me now.  I’ll do better by him,” he says as confidently as he can.  “I love him,” he adds because Sanders is Michael’s family, and Alex wants him to know he’s serious.
“I could have told you that.  One eye,” he taps his patch, “but I’m not blind.  Don’t know why I have to keep reminding people of that,” he grumbles.  “And you’ll both do better because you’re not a couple of scared kids this time.  You’re not hiding from that no good daddy of yours, and he’s not so used to secrets he wouldn’t know the truth if it slapped him in the face.”
Alex laughs because he’s not wrong, but “No, now we're just dealing with his,” Alex pauses and reconsiders his words because he can’t bring himself to call Jones Michael’s father in front of the man who really should have that title.  “Now we’re dealing with Jones and all my bullshit from a decade in the Air Force.”
“Never gonna be perfect,” Sanders grunts.  “But you’re better together than you are apart.  Start with that.”
“Thanks,” Alex shifts on his feet. He wasn’t expecting to have a heart to heart with Sanders so soon.  It makes his anxious to see Michael, to be reassured he hasn’t fucked things up already.  “Here, this is for you,” he thrusts one of the coffee cups at Sanders.
He sips it cautiously then smiles before narrowing his eye at Alex. “Michael tell you how I take my coffee?”
“Nope, he told me you take it black.”
“Idiot,” Sanders mumbles under his breath.  “Guess coffee runs are your job from now on.”
“I can do that,” Alex agrees easily.  Sanders' approval is worth the hours he spent reviewing the footage he hacked from the coffee shop to find out Sanders preferred coffee is a double espresso latte with half vanilla, half coconut and almond milk.
“Best be on your way before Michael glares a hole in my back waiting for me to let you go.  Guess I know why he’s been smiling like a loon these last few days.  Probably explains the limp, too.”
Sanders walks away leaving Alex choking on air.  But he spots Michael waiting in the doorway of the garage, and his smile is worth the embarrassment.

Under the Sea bonus story! I had so much fun returning to this world and these characters. I just really wanted to write a little epilogue sort of chapter. If you enjoy reading at all, please comment and share, it always makes the world of a difference 💙
Alex heard the laughter of dolphins in his ears, the rush of bubbles against his cheeks as fish swam past. He opened his eyes to treasure; stones of different colors and sizes covered the ocean floor, seaweed, coral, sea creatures of all kinds floated past.
Once upon a time, Alex had feared the ocean as he feared nothing else. Now he knew he was safe in its waters, for the love of his life resided there. He felt hands on his hips, pulling him back against a warm chest, even under the cold water, and he laughed. He was safe, a bubble of air protecting his head down to the base of his neck.
“Have you no decency?” Alex asked even as he tilted his chin up, giving Forrest more access to his skin.
“I wish to kiss my fiancé,” murmured Forrest with a grin against Alex’s neck. “Am I not allowed?”
“Not here,” he huffed, “where someone might see us.”
Forrest turned Alex around, making him laugh. He held his face in his hands, the gold band on his finger cold against Alex’s cheek. Forrest’s long blue and gold tail swayed calmly in the water below them, but his voice was in a near growl when he spoke, “I care not who sees us. Let them envy me, for I am the one to marry the most handsome man in all of the oceans and on land combined.”
Even under the water, Alex’s cheeks heated and he hid his face in Forrest’s shoulder. “Honestly . . .”
“Don’t you dare look down,” Forrest whispered, tilting down so that his forehead pressed against Alex’s, the blue and gold in his dark eyes glimmering with an overwhelming fondness and love that threatened to kill Alex in the best way.
As he neared, Alex’s mouth instinctively fell open, and he found himself closing the distance between them, eager to taste Forrest’s lips in his, when suddenly –
“Oi! Can’t you keep your hands off each other for two bloody minutes?!” Kyle appeared, his green and gold fin swimming behind him. He grabbed Alex’s arm and tugged. “Stop hogging him all to yourself!”
“Oh, leave them alone, Kyle,” Maria sighed dreamily. “They’re in love.”
“They have their entire lives to be in love!” Kyle demanded. “I have only another short moment while Alex is a free man!”
Forrest wrapped his arms around Alex’s shoulders, his smile in place, but his eyes dark. “And what exactly do you assume will happen between you and Alex?”
“Don’t be such a stiff, Forrest,” Kyle rolled his eyes, tugging Alex, and therefore Forrest, closer. “I just want to talk to him. Without you.”
“That’s simply not going to happen.”
“Don’t you trust me?” teased Alex.
“Implicitly,” said Forrest without a moment’s hesitation, and narrowed his eyes at Kyle. “It’s his wandering hands I don’t trust.”
Alex laughed and kissed Forrest’s cheek. He nuzzled his neck. Even underwater, as fish tickled his feet and the world turned to a peaceful silence around them, Alex could still smell Forrest. Even down here, he smelled like the ocean.
“Who knew,” teased Jenna, the white pearls in her hair making her look like an angel, “that Forrest could be so possessive?”
“I did,” Kyle huffed, “since we first found Alex and he wouldn’t let any of us near him.”
“I was being protective,” Forrest insisted. “Oh, enough of all of you. Come along, my love. We’ve been down here long enough and soon people will start to wake. We best get back to the surface so that I can change to my human form.”
Alex nodded, but accepted the hugs from Kyle and the others first. Forrest had been right in that Kyle held on longer than the others, squeezing him tightly enough to make him laugh, and then he had his arms around Forrest again.
“Hold on tight to me, my love,” Forrest whispered into the space between them. Alex remembered a year ago when Forrest had said the same thing to him before saving him from the cavern and returning him to his home. Alex had held on trustingly. Forrest had been his one small relief, even if he hadn’t really known him.
Now, as they rose to the surface together, Alex was filled with laughter, his chest overflowing with love for the merman before him. When they broke the surface, the cold hit them first, but Alex clung to Forrest’s warmth.
“Go on,” Forrest encouraged him, his lips against Alex’s ear. “I’ll be right behind you.”
Alex nodded, and let go of Forrest. He swam to the shore, and walked up the rest of the way. As he stepped out of the waves, he saw the water change color, as though someone were shining a bright blue light underneath the surface, and he turned to find Forrest standing in the water, the waves lapping around his naked waist. His blue hair and the blue glow of his eyes were gone, and his still-glowing blue seashell nestled in his collarbone. Alex smiled. He loved this version of Forrest just as much, for the magic of the sea never seemed to leave him no matter what form he took.
Alex reached for the hidden clothes he kept wrapped in a towel behind a boulder, and handed them to Forrest. Once they were both dried and dressed, they made their usual way up the far left stone steps to the street above.
The marketplace was still mostly bare, but Alex spotted a merchant here and there, preparing their stall for the day. Some waved good morning to him and Forrest, some congratulated them, some merely ogled.
“I hate when they stare,” Alex murmured.
Forrest grinned. “They can scarcely ignore your beauty, darling. Don’t begrudge them for it. I can hardly resist staring at you myself.”
Alex blushed. “That’s different! And it’s not me they’re watching, it’s you!”
He laughed. “So you’re jealous, then?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” he said, and kissed Forrest’s cheek for good measure.
When the wooden sign for Le Gateau au Chocolat – Gregory and Isobel’s pastry shop – came into view, Alex and Forrest decided to race the rest of the way. They both reached the door out of breath with giggles. Alex had won by only a small margin. Forrest had been getting much better at using his legs.
“Oh, Alex, good,” Gregory called from behind the counter. “I’ve decided to change the chicken to beef for tonight.”
               Alex faltered. “Isn’t beef expensive?”
Isobel came in from the kitchens. She wiped her hands on her apron and put them on her hips. “Don’t you go worrying about that. We’ve taken care of it.”
Alex looked to Forrest, suspicious. “You didn’t . . .?”
Forrest leapt onto the counter. “Oh, I certainly offered. What’s the point of being a king with riches if I cannot spoil my love? But no, your brother and sister would not hear of it. This time.”
“Stop it,” Gregory scolded. “We’re older, we take care of you, that’s how it works.”
Forrest hummed, and his eyes brightened. “Until Alex and I are married. Then he’s all mine.”
Alex caught Isobel’s amused look, and turned away, his face red. He cleared his throat. “Anyhow. What time’s the dinner?”
“Eight,” Gregory pointed. “Do not be late, both of you. Oh” – he dusted some of the sand off Forrest’s jacket – “and try not to mention any merpeople, will you? The last thing we need is for Liz and Max to know the truth, too.”
“They wouldn’t tell anyone,” Alex defended.
Gregory and Isobel shared a look, and Isobel sighed. “We can’t risk Michael finding out, Alex. I love my brother, but . . .” she shook her head. “Ever since you announced your engagement, he’s been . . .”
“He isn’t happy,” Gregory said. “Let’s put it that way.”
Alex sat down, and looked at the band on his finger. A circle of gold with an aquamarine jewel imbedded in the center. He hated to admit it, but in the moments after his excitement at marrying Forrest had faded, Michael had come to mind. What he would think, how he would feel, react. He’d been anxious, and now he knew he was right to have been.
“It’ll be all right though, won’t it?” he asked, hearing the plea in his own voice.
Forrest’s smile dimmed. He never liked the mention of Michael, but he leapt from the counter regardless, stumbled, then came to sit in front of Alex. He took his hands in both of his and kissed his fingers.
“Everything will be perfect, my love,” he promised. “I’m certain he will come to this dinner with kindness and happiness in his heart. He will be happy only that you are happy.” He hesitated, then, “You . . . are happy, aren’t you?”
“Oh,” Alex breathed, and wrapped his arms around Forrest’s shoulders tightly, burying his face in the crook of his neck. “I love you more than I can say. I’m sorry, my darling, I don’t mean to imply any different.”
“Really, Alex,” Isobel assured him, “you’ve no reason to worry about Michael. I’ll make sure of it.”
Alex sighed, resting his head on Forrest’s shoulder. “I just want everything to be perfect.” He played with Forrest’s fingers. “You’re a king after all, you must have standards.”
“I do,” Forrest nodded. “Absolutely. If it’s not Alex, then I will not have it.”
“Oi, keep your distance, you two,” Gregory warned with his wooden spoon. “We have customers coming in soon, and this is no pub!”
Forrest had Alex’s face in his hands, and was nuzzling his nose. He whispered, “I don’t see any customers now.”
He took Alex’s lips in his own, one hand reaching into his hair, the other cupping his neck. Alex whimpered in the back of his throat, and Forrest tilted his head to deepen the kiss, their mouths slotting perfectly together, Forrest’s tongue sliding against his own.
He ran his hands down Forrest’s chest, and then Gregory threw a rag over their heads. “Were you not listening?” he snapped. “Your engagement dinner’s tonight, can you not contain yourselves?!”
Forrest pointed at Alex’s face, incredulous. “Have you seen him?”
Alex hid his face in Forrest’s shoulder, embarrassed, as Isobel laughed loudly.
“Which looks better?” Liz asked, holding up a deep green dress, and a bright red. “This one? Or this one?”
“I think you look beautiful in both,” Alex said cheerfully. Forrest sat next to him, eagerly shoveling down the biscuits Gregory had given them to have after lunch. Every so often, he offered Alex one, Alex shook his head, and then he ate the entire thing in one bite.
“Mmh – yes,” said Forrest. “Beau—ifful.”
“Oh, you both are useless,” Rosa sighed from where she sat on the counter. “Obviously, the red is terribly unsuitable.”
               Liz frowned. “Is it?”
“Yes!” she took a biscuit from Forrest’s plate. “This is an engagement dinner. The red should clearly be saved for the wedding!”
“Do you think so, Alex?” Liz asked.
               “Er – actually –”
“What’re you asking him for?” Rosa huffed. “You know he’s too nice to tell you the truth!”
Liz opened her mouth to argue when the front door swung open. Max smiled at them.
“Good afternoon, all!” He ruffled Alex and Rosa’s hair, and kissed Liz’s cheek. “Afternoon, darling.”
“Did you see the suit I put out for you?” Liz said in lieu of a greeting.
               “Yes, darling.”
“Don’t you dare wear it until the dinner.”
               Max’s smile widened. “Yes, darling.”
“We have to look our best for Alex and Forrest,” she said. Then she mumbled something incoherent to him and they glanced at Alex, as though afraid he’d heard. Max merely nodded in response.
“Honestly,” said Alex, leaning against Forrest’s side. “You don’t have to go through all this fuss. It’s just going to be a small, comfortable dinner.”
Liz put her hands on her hips. “Then why did Flint order a new navy-blue coat for the occasion?”
“Did he?” Alex blinked, and flushed. Since their last voyage, he had feared for his relationship with his brother, the distance the truth about their mother’s death may put between them. He had seemed happy to be invited to the engagement dinner, but Alex had feared it had been an act. To know he cared this much, it gladdened Alex’s heart more than he could say.
Rosa scoffed. “Well, I won’t need any help preparing. I know exactly what to wear.”
“Yes,” Liz said testily, “but will you know how to behave?”
“Oi!” she argued. “Don’t you start with me, it’s Michael you should be concerned about!”
Liz shot her a sharp look, while Max turned a nervous smile on Alex and Forrest. Forrest had stopped eating.
“She’s joking,” Max assured them. “Michael’s really happy for you, Alex.”
Forrest smiled, but it was polite and cold, not at all what Alex was used to. “I trust he will be on his best behaviour.” Then he grumbled, “If not, I’ll throw him into the middle of the ocean.”
Alex hooked his arm around Forrest’s and kissed his shoulder. “Are there any more biscuits left for me?” he murmured.
Forrest’s eyes lit up at once, and he handed Alex the largest he had. “I saved it for you, my love!”
Alex laughed, his heart and the atmosphere of the shop lighter at once.
Forrest insisted on watching the sunset before dinner, but Alex had not needed much persuasion. Once they’d excused themselves from the shop, they made their way down the street, Forrest’s arm hooked around Alex’s. There was a time he had clung to him to walk, but now he stayed close for the sake of staying close itself. Forrest played with his fingers, and Alex kissed the back of his hand.
“Congratulations, dears!” Mrs. Valenti called for what felt like the millionth time, as she liked to congratulate them whenever they passed by. “Isn’t it so exciting, Mr. Higgins?”
“Eh?” Mr. Higgins chuckled good-naturedly. “Yes, yes, terribly happy for them!”
Forrest’s eyes lingered, once again, on the frozen fish in Mr. Higgins’ market stall, but at a kiss to his cheek from Alex, his eyes brightened once again.
Instead of going down to shore, they sat on the brick wall that overlooked the ocean, their legs dangling over the end. The sand below was soft, so there was no fear of falling. Nonetheless, Forrest kept a tight arm around Alex’s waist, and Alex felt safe.
The sky turned to rose and violet and gold as the sun fell behind the ocean’s surface. Alex asked if Forrest had seen plenty of sunsets before.
“I try to,” he confessed, “but there’s quite a risk of being seen by sailors, even so far out at sea.”
Alex shuddered as he thought of Forrest tied to a ship’s mast, at sailors who were happy to harm him because of what he was. He burrowed deeper into his side and nuzzled his neck.
“I will never let anyone touch you again, sailor or otherwise,” he promised in a whisper.
Forrest kissed the top of his head. “And I will protect you with my life.”
“Will I ever see your underwater kingdom?” Alex asked.
Forrest laughed. “Certainly,” he said. “I will have a room prepared where not a drop of water would dare to enter.”
Alex closed his eyes and let the sun’s warmth bathe them both in gold. “I don’t fear drowning with you at my side.”
“And you never shall have to,” Forrest told him, his hold tightening and promising a king’s protection.
They kissed in the setting sun until their lips swelled. They kissed until Forrest’s hand sought out the hem of Alex’s shirt, and Alex realized that if they did not stop soon, they would not stop at all. Then all those walking on the street behind them would have a true reason to stare. They kissed until Alex started to want nothing more than to fall to the sand below with Forrest in his arms, and forget the engagement dinner entirely. To prove their love another way.
Then he took Forrest’s wrist and pressed their foreheads together, the two panting, and pulled them both to their feet at the first signs of the evening stars. They went hand-in-hand, laughing, back to the pastry shop.
Alex told Forrest about the gold coat he’d asked Liz for him to wear, and Forrest told Alex about the deep blue ocean flower he’d acquired for Alex’s coat pocket.
Then a voice cut through their conversation like knife through ice.
“Alex,” Michael said with a nod. “Forrest.” His eyes fell on Alex and Forrest’s intertwined hands. “Am I too early?”
His voice was subdued, and Forrest’s eyes had darkened.
“Good evening, Michael,” he said, his grip on Alex’s hand tightening. “Not at all. Please, come in.”
“Are you nervous?” Forrest asked from where he sat on the edge of Alex’s bed. Alex watched him through the mirror’s reflection.
Alex pulled on his coat and took a seat beside him. He interlocked their hands. “Are you?”
Forrest smiled, though it did not reach his eyes. “Only that you will change your mind.”
Alex raised a brow. “Do you truly imagine my heart so fickle?”
Forrest’s grip on his hand tightened. “I imagine that there is no one who can love as you can. I know it. It is for that reason that I cannot help but worry. He was your first love.”
“And you are my last,” Alex told him. “That carries far more weight, in my opinion.”
Downstairs, they could hear the muffled clinking of cups and plates as the sky turned dark and stars peeked out. In the distance, the waves lapped against the shore softly, a comforting reminder that there was always somewhere they could escape to, somewhere where the troubles of land could not follow.
Forrest said nothing for a long while, then, “I do not want to see you harmed.”
“I could only be harmed by losing you,” Alex promised him. “I am marrying a king, it is you who has far more prospects.”
Forrest scoffed half-heartedly. “I will tell you what I’ve already told your brother; have you seen you?”
Alex burst into giggles, his face warm. He felt the soft touch of Forrest’s lips to his cheek. The laughter faded as they pressed their foreheads together, Alex’s eyes closed as he breathed Forrest in.
“Stay close to me,” he whispered.
Forrest nodded once, his lips brushing Alex’s. “Forever.”
Dinner had started off well. Alex and Forrest descended down the staircase to the shop where a long table sat and fairy lights had been hung up. The table lay covered with platters of beef, cheese, fruit and bread. Glasses of wine sat at every chair. Isobel and Gregory had truly outdone themselves.
Liz sat between Max and Rosa. Beside Max was Michael, Isobel, Gregory, and Flint. Forrest pulled out Alex’s chair for him, making him blush, and kissed the top of his head before taking the seat beside him. Alex did not dare glance at Michael.
For the most part, they shared in their stories, and though Forrest could not share many of his own for fear of exposing himself, he seemed quite content to listen to Alex’s versions of his bravery and kindness.
“I hear you were responsible for helping to save Alex,” Michael told Forrest, for he had but one of the many different stories of Alex and Forrest’s first meeting. He bowed his head once. “I sincerely thank you.”
“I could not see anything happen to him,” Forrest said, smiling at Alex. “It was love at first sight, you see.”
Alex hoped Michael would not respond, but then he said, “Yes, I understand the feeling.” He was looking directly at Alex, his gaze pointed as though he was trying to share a secret message with him.
Then Forrest took Alex’s hand and kissed the aquamarine bracelet he’d given him so many months ago on the shore. “All right, darling?” he whispered, and Alex nodded, the smile returning to his lips at Forrest’s eyes on him.
“Goodness, Alex,” Liz sighed. “I do love that bracelet. Forrest made that for him,” she told Michael, “did you know?”
“Purely for selfish reasons,” Forrest confessed. “I’ve always wanted to see Alex in aquamarine. He looks so beautiful with it, doesn’t he?”
“Where did you get that?” Flint murmured. “Bottom of the ocean?”
Gregory nudged Flint with his elbow, but the five of them were already laughing at the private joke.
“Honestly, Forrest,” grinned Isobel, “do you care about anything but Alex?”
Forrest hummed, eyes narrowed. “No, I don’t think so. Why?” he asked, genuinely confused when everyone save for Michael started laughing, “Is there anything else to care about?”
“I would think someone of your position would have plenty,” Gregory thoughtlessly said.
Rosa frowned. “What do you mean, of his position?”
Gregory’s eyes widened and Alex tensed. Forrest, after all, was a king. He had plenty of concerns, yet the others at the table did not know that.
It was Isobel who chuckled nervously and said, “Well, you see, Forrest is very wealthy. He has so much to tend to back in – er –”
“Paris,” Gregory quickly finished. “Because, as you all know, he is from Paris. Isn’t that right, Forrest?”
“Certainly,” Forrest nodded. “I am from Paris.”
Everyone returned to their meat and potatoes when all of a sudden a loud CLANK! drove all other conversation away. Michael had roughly set his fork and knife down.
“Is that why you chose him?” Michael asked, breaking the heavy silence. “Because he’s so much wealthier than I am?”
Alex was staring, brows furrowed. He set his utensils down delicately. When he spoke, his voice was cold to his own ears, something fierce and protective overwhelming him. “I beg your pardon?”
Michael scoffed, shaking his head. There was nothing humorous about it.
“Michael,” Max warned, but Michael was already seething.
“I thought it was odd,” he said. “You’d known him for such a short time, yet you fell in love so quickly. Is that why, Alex? He could take better care of you than I could?”
               “Michael,” Isobel hissed, “enough.”
“Is that why you wouldn’t even give me another chance?”
Forrest stood at once, but Alex took his arm. He’d never seen Forrest’s glare so full of anger.
“I will thank you,” Gregory said darkly, “to mind your manners, Michael.”
“I’m sorry,” Michael said, crossing his arms on top of the table, his eyes on Alex. “I’m sorry that I’m the only one who will acknowledge that there is too much about Forrest that we don’t know. I’m sorry if I’m the only one who wishes to make certain that Alex is not throwing his life away at the first man to offer him comfort after heartbreak.”
“No, you’re right,” Flint said, slumping in his seat. “I’d much rather my brother stay with someone who hurt him.”
“Please,” Alex said quietly, and the table turned silent. He raised his chin and held Michael’s gaze. “Forrest saved my life in more ways than I could say. I did not know of his wealth until I’d already loved him, and even if I had, it wouldn’t have changed anything.”
               “Alex –”
“You are a guest,” Alex told him sternly, “in my home. Forrest is my fiancé, and I expect you to treat him with respect.” His shoulders fell, his tone turned pleading. “I want you to be a part of my life, Michael. Please don’t make me push you out of it.”
Michael stared back for a long moment, his jaw clenched. Then he stood, murmured an apology, and left.
Forrest wrapped an arm around Alex’s shoulders, keeping him close. He pressed soft kisses to his ear, his cheek, his jaw as Gregory and Isobel made quick work of returning the rest of the table to cheerier conversation.
Later that night, Alex woke in bed to find Forrest’s side empty. He sat up, looking through the house, and softly called for Forrest in the shop. When he did not find his fiancé at home, panic began to rise in his chest until he forced it down. His father could not harm Forrest any longer, yet Alex knew he would not rest until he saw his love’s face again.
Realizing there was only one place Forrest could be, Alex quickly threw on a coat and his boots, and made his way down to the shore. There, with his knees pulled up to his chest amongst the waves, sat Forrest, staring out at the ocean. His blue seashell glittered at his neck.
Alex hesitated, then came and sat beside him.
“Are you upset with me?” were his first words.
Forrest frowned. “What in the soundless seas for?”
“The dinner,” he said. “I told Michael I – I wanted him in my life.”
A smirk tugged at Forrest’s lips. “That is no secret, Alex. I’ve known it since before I met you. Don’t you remember?”
Alex did. Forrest had told him that that was when he had first fallen in love with him; when he’d heard Alex speaking of Michael to the stars.
“Forrest,” he said, “I love you. More than I’ve ever loved anyone. Stronger than I’ve ever loved anyone.”
Forrest chuckled. “You dove into the ocean to save me, Alex. I don’t question your love.”
“Yet you’re here,” he said, his chin on Forrest’s shoulder, “instead of in bed with me.”
Forrest turned to him, kissing his nose. “I fear the mess of my thoughts might’ve troubled your sleep.”
“I am only troubled when you are not there,” he murmured, and kissed Forrest’s shoulder.
“You will never regret me?” asked Forrest.
Alex clenched his jaw. “You are a king. I am a mere human. What could I possibly offer you?”
Forrest cupped Alex’s cheek fiercely, his hold tight. He let his hand fall down Alex’s jaw, his neck, and settled on his opened coat collar. As he leaned in, he whispered the words, as though he was shocked Alex did not know the answer already.
               “You.”
Before Alex could say anything else, Forrest kissed him. Their lips pressed together again and again, and when Alex felt Forrest’s tongue slide against his own, a moan escaped his lips. When Forrest began kissing down his chin, his neck, Alex looked around to make certain that no one was watching. But then this was the middle of the night. He didn’t think anyone would be awake for hours.
The waves turned suddenly warm as they washed around Forrest and Alex, as their kisses deepened, as Forrest’s fingers undid the buttons of Alex’s coat and gently pushed him onto his back. The kisses turned rougher, more eager, and Alex felt as though they would never move away from one another again.
Alex released a breathy moan as he ran his hands up Forrest’s naked back. He imagined them, lying nude on the beach, Forrest thrusting into him, licking a line along his neck, the cold quickly turning to heat so thick that Alex couldn’t breathe and was happy to suffocate.
He ran his hands down Forrest’s bare cheeks, urging him in deeper. He was so in love he could hardly stand it. This man, bathed in moonlight and showered with drops of the ocean, was to be his husband.
Alex took Forrest’s face in his hands and kissed him as he’d never kissed anyone before. Forrest was all his, the beautiful merman of blue and gold belonged to him. He never imagined, that year ago when he’d first embarked on his father’s voyage, that he would find such joy. When he’d fallen over the ship’s edge and his world had changed forever.
The ocean waves hit the shore with a gentle shushing sound, protecting Alex and Forrest from searching eyes. They were safe here, Alex was safe here. With Forrest, with the ocean, with the life he’d been given when it seemed he’d been destined to drown.
“Hold on tight to me,” Forrest told him. And so Alex did.

“What the fuck is that?”
“It’s bleach,” Alex laughed, mixing up the solution in the the little bowl, “Which you would know if you did any fucking research before you dyed your hair last time.”
Forrest pouted for all of two seconds before it slipped into his smile and he rolled his eyes. The color in his hair was starting to fade back into brown and he’d mentioned to Alex that he was going to redye it. Which would’ve been fine until he said the shitty routine he had for doing so. So now Alex had taken over and he honestly didn’t seem bothered by that.
“You sure you’re good with this towel being ruined just in case?” Alex asked as he turned to face him, gloves and bleach brush in hand. Forrest looked up at him with those fucking eyes and nodded.
“I don’t actually mind what you ruin,” Forrest said. Alex rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at him, both men laughing as Alex started just putting the bleach on him.
It took awhile to saturate it enough because his hair was ridiculously thick, but he eventually did and peeled off his gloves before setting a timer. Alex pushed himself to sit on the counter in front him, giving Forrest a little smile as he braced his prosthetic against one of the drawers.
“We should get dinner after this,” Forrest said, reaching out to touch his bare thigh. It took awhile for him to get comfortable around Forrest, but now that he had, he was obsessed with the way he touched him. It was almost constant, always finding some excuse to touch him with his soft hands that had been smoothed with touching paper every day of his life. It felt like an incentive for Alex to walk around in nothing but briefs and a cropped t-shirt all day. It meant skin to skin contact whenever he wanted it. And he kind of wanted it always so that was a plus.
“Agreed,” Alex nodded, “Maybe we could order takeout?”
“Are you gonna be too embarrassed by whatever you do to my hair?” Forrest teased, squeezing his thigh gently. Alex shook his head, extending his foot to rest on Forrest’s own thigh.
“No, I think you’re gonna look hot as hell,” Alex promised, looking between his sweet face watching his hand slide down to grip his calf in a way that felt far too hot to be legal, “But I think I’d rather make-out on the couch than go out.”
“Oh yeah?” Forrest laughed, shaking his head before carefully pressing a kiss to Alex’s knee, “Well, at least you’re honest.”
“I am. I really, really am,” Alex insisted, both of them laughing a little harder as he said so, “But what do you want?”
“Mmm, Chinese food maybe? Lo mein sounds good,” Forrest said. Alex nodded, glancing over to the timer as Forrest continued to rub his leg.
“Can I get something else and then steal some of yours?” Alex asked, reluctantly pulling his leg away from his boyfriend so he could stand back up. Forrest watched him, hands to himself but ready to steady him if he needed it as he put his prosthetic on the ground. He didn’t, but he appreciated the sentiment.
“Absolutely,” Forrest said, “As long as you get something with friend rice.”
“Why would I not get something with fried rice? Do I look like an animal to you?” Alex asked as the timer went off. Forrest stood up from his chair.
“Well, I mean, not right now.”
“Shut up,” Alex laughed, “Can you wash it out yourself or do you want me to try to help?”
“I got it.”
Alex stood in the doorway as Forrest hunched over the bathtub, using the removable shower head to spray it out. Alex liked looking at him even when he was all hunched over and trying not to get bleach in his eyes. He was warm and inviting and Alex didn’t think there was enough people like him.
Eventually, he stood back at and dried his hair in a half-assed way before he just shook it out like a dog. Alex scoffed as water got on him and swatted him in the stomach. Forrest caught it easily, pulling him a little closer and pressing a kiss to his lips. Alex breathed him in as he kissed back, smiling easily when they parted.
“Sit down and I’ll get the blow dryer, okay?” Alex said. Forrest nodded, pressing one more kiss to his lips and then his cheek before doing as he was told. Alex felt that newly-familiar wash of being loved genuinely come over him at the small little moment and, instead of pushing it away, he let it sink into his bones and didn’t even try to hide his smile as he plugged in the blow dryer.
For the next ten minutes, Alex tried to dry his hair, continuously running his fingers through the newly bleached locks and being annoyed when it seemed to hold water like a sponge. His annoyance was bled away each time Forrest reached out for him, never pulling him closer since he was doing something, but just touching him because he could. That was nice.
“Stop it, that tickles,” Alex told him over the sound of the blow dryer as Forrest dragged his fingertips right above the hem of his briefs. So, Forrest listened, moving his fingers down a little bit more to trace over the seam of his underwear. Alex giggled, moving his hips just a little bit out of the way. “I’m never going to finish if you keep doing that.”
“Oh, I really think you will.”
“Get your mind out of the fucking gutter, Jesus,” Alex said, but he laughed harder and his face felt warm. His cheeks hurt from smiling. “Okay, it’s dry enough, time for the dye.”
It carried on like before, small touches being dispersed as he worked the bright blue dye into his bleached hair. Alex sat back on the counter after setting another timer to wait, smiling at him helplessly.
“Aren’t you excited to fully explore your young Manic Panic desires?” Alex asked. Forrest rolled his eyes with a laugh and pulled Alex’s good leg back into his lap. He pushed his thumb into the bottom of his foot, slowly started to massage it for no fucking reason. Alex shook his head. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing,” Forrest said innocently, winking at him as if he didn’t look a little wild with the dye in his hair. Alex shook his head again and huffed a laugh, leaning his head back against the mirror as Forrest continued. “Does that feel good?”
“Yeah.”
“Good, rubbing this part of the foot is supposed to help your heart.”
Alex snorted, “Is there something wrong with my heart that I don’t know about?”
“No, just making sure it’s taken care of.”
“You’re so cheesy,” Alex laughed, but his stomach ached from the attention and his skin started heating up all over again. Forrest shrugged and pulled his foot up to his mouth, kissing the bottom without any hesitant. Alex laughed even louder. “Ew, that’s fucking gross!”
“What?” Forrest said, holding back his laughter as best he could, “My floors are clean.”
“Still,” Alex said, still shaking with laughter. Forrest rolled his eyes and didn’t let go of his leg as he got up and moved closer. He stepped between Alex’s knees, entering that space where he was more than welcome. “I am not kissing you after you kissed my foot.”
“Fair enough,” Forrest agreed, carefully placing kissing on his shoulder over his shirt and then over his heart. He made sure not to angle it any type of way that he might get dye on Alex’s skin. Maybe Alex moved his head to the side to give him more space. Maybe Forrest noticed and that’s how he ended up kissing on his neck.
“Can you brush your teeth please because I’m going to lose my fucking mind,” Alex breathed, overwhelmed with the need to kiss him but really not interested in the idea of his own foot in his mouth.
“So picky,” Forrest teased, tapping his index finger against Alex’s nose as he moved to the sink.
Alex sat, feeling a little restless at the lack of contact as Forrest did what he asked and made a point to wash the bottom half of his face for extra measure. He pulled him in for a kiss by his shirt before he could even dry his face off, kissing him. It was a little awkward, both of them trying not to get the dye in his hair on Alex, but it was hard when he just wanted to get his hands on him.
When the timer went off, they both groaned which made them both smile.
“Go wash it out,” Alex urged. Forrest hummed, giving him another peck before peeling away to go to the tub again.
“I’m just gonna take a shower,” Forrest decided. Alex carefully pushed himself off the bathroom counter again.
“Can I watch?”
“Oh, and I’m the weird one,” Forrest laughed. Alex smiled his way and shrugged. “Go order food, I’ll be out in a minute.”
“Vegetable lo mein?” Alex clarified.
“Yes, please.”
Alex hung around just long enough to watch him strip before leaving him to stain the shower curtain with his hair. He used his phone to order them both food, relaxing on the couch as he waited for Forrest to finish up. The longer it took, the more antsy he got which simply had him smiling to himself so wide it hurt. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt so unrelentingly happy with someone else that he felt clingy and it wasn’t even a problem. Forrest was the same way. That was something otherworldly.
“Okay, so, you may have been onto something with the bleach,” Forrest said as he came out of the bathroom in nothing but a towel. Alex gave him his full attention.
His hair was actually blue now, a few shades too light to be navy. It went to his roots and didn’t look like the shitty dye job he’d been rocking. It looked good. Alex stayed on the couch, smiling up at him as he came closer.
“It looks fucking great.”
“Yeah, I know I didn’t dry it or anything, but,” Forrest said, shrugging his shoulders.
“It still looks way better, I did a great job,” Alex bragged. Forrest didn’t even deny it.
“You really did, thank you.”
“No problem, now come here,” Alex said, reaching for him with grabby hands. Forrest gave him a fond look and blew him a kiss.
“Give me one second, I need to go get a pair of shorts so the delivery guy doesn’t get scared,” he said. Alex pouted a little exaggeratedly. “I’ll be right back.”
And he was. He all but ran to his bedroom and Alex laughed a little bit. Within a few seconds, he was running back out with a pair of shorts on and jumped onto the couch and onto Alex. Their laughter mixed in the air as they kissed, Alex pulling him as close as he could. He smelled good, his flowery shampoo and the scent of the dye making something just tasteful enough that Alex couldn’t get him close enough.
“Thank you,” Alex whispered against his lips.
“For what?”
“For making me happy,” he said honestly. Forrest smiled, bumping his nose against Alex’s.
“Thank you for doing the same.”
They had to apologize to the delivery guy who had to knock three times before they heard him.

35 for forlex please!
35. You get flowered tattoos wherever your soulmate receives a scar.
When he meets Alex it feels like fate. Forrest is pretty sure Alex is the most beautiful man he’s ever seen. It isn’t until he sees the blue flower on the back of Alex’s hand that matches up with a scar Forrest got when he was fifteen that he knows for sure. Alex Manes is his soulmate.
Forrest smiles sadly at Alex when he realizes it, as they sit across from each other in the Crashdown, laughing over Forrest’s newest poem.
“You okay?” Alex asks as he dips another fry in his milkshake, beautiful smile on display.
“Yeah, sorry.” Forrest shakes his head, rubbing up and down his arms covered by his leather jacket. They’re always covered.
“You know you can take off your jacket right?” Alex chuckles. “You’re hot. I mean if you’re hot.”
“You think I’m hot?” Forrest smirks as Alex blushes.
“You know you are.” Alex says a little exasperated.
“It’s the hair right?”
“The blue definitely does it for me.”
Forrest laughs, warmed through at the easy banter they’ve always had with each other. He sobers after a moment thinking of his own flowers on his skin. The ones littering his body, most noticeable on his arms and legs. Only now realizing the ring of them around his right leg, below the knee, must be where Alex’s leg ends.
“Hey.” Alex grabs his hand and squeezes. “Where’d you go?”
“Can we get out of here?”
“Uhh sure?”
“I just. I have to show you something but I don’t want to do it here.”
“Okay. I know where we can go.” Alex says as he takes them up to the roof of the Crashdown citing being childhood friends with the Ortecho sisters so of course he’s allowed.
“So what did you want to show me?”
Forrest starts to take his jacket off and Alex laughs.
“We could’ve gone back to my place if I knew...”
Alex stops talking the second Forrest takes off his jacket. Forrest loves his tattoos, flowers that he’s been getting since he was young, aptly fitting his name. It wasn’t until he was a teenager that he realized you only get a flower when your soulmate gets a scar.
“There’s more, but I don’t think you need to see those right now, do you?”
“No.” Alex whispers as he brushes his fingers lightly over some of Forrest’s tattoos. This close Forrest can see the faint scars covering Alex’s arms, mirror images to Forrest’s flowers.
“Alex?”
“Your leg?” Alex clears his throat. “What does your leg look like?”
Forrest bends down and rolls up his right pant leg. There’s a ring of flowers around his right calf, and falling petals that fall down to his foot.
“And when did you get that one?” Alex asks quietly.
“You really need me to say it?”
“No.” Alex whispers as Forrest stands up and pulls Alex towards him.
“They’re beautiful.” Alex says as he rubs his hands over Forrest’s right arm, tracing the flowers there.
Forrest looks up into Alex’s eyes, more in love than he has any right to be, knowing that he’s only as beautiful as this man next to him.
“No, sweetheart. You are.”

For Rin! Happy Birthday fam <3
Hey, I wrote this little thing for you my friend. I hope you enjoy it, it’s just a lot of tooth rotting fluff, for your birthday. @pastelwitchling
Alex woke to the sweet smell of pancakes wafting through the room. A warm solid weight next to him snuffled and small legs kicked gently against his side. He didn’t want to move from the warm cocoon of blankets that enveloped him, but he could hear a soft singing and the scrape of a spatula calling him like a siren song. He stretched slowly, careful not to disturb Buffy next to him as she lay twitching, obviously deep in some doggy dream. She huffed anyway as he moved, and he couldn’t help the small smile as he rubbed her belly. He put on his prosthetic and, not wanting to completely abandon the warmth of the bed, rustled through his drawers to find his soft cream sweats. They engulfed him in the best way, keeping him safe and warm as he wandered into the kitchen to find his boyfriend swaying by the stove top. Alex couldn’t stop himself from wrapping his arms around the man and moving his hips in time with the song he was singing.
“What’s the special occasion?”
“Hmm? What do you mean Captain?”
Alex snuggled his face into the crook of Forrest’s neck at the term of endearment. It had taken some time to get used to the soft tone that he used with it, but now it just made him blush tremendously.
“You’re making our special pancakes, with chocolate chips and everything.”
“Well, someone is giving a super special performance today at the open mic, so I thought we could spend the day doing a few of your favorite things, starting with our special pancakes.” A warmth spread deeply in his chest, heating him from the inside out. Alex knew he must be blushing furiously and snuggled his face further into his boyfriend’s neck. “Go on, sit, this was the last pancake anyway.”
“How’d you do all of this without me waking up anyway? I’m usually up hours before you.”
“I may have woken up a few hours early so that I could get working. It was no trouble.” Alex sank into his usual spot at the table, and Forrest set a plate heaping with food in front of him. As he took in the array Forrest took a moment to press a gentle kiss to his cheek, spreading the blush from his cheeks up the back of his neck. Forrest just grinned at him fondly and began digging into his own food.
They cleaned up the kitchen together, moving in sync as Forrest washed the dishes and Alex dried. At some point Buffy came lumbering in and flopped down at their feet. Alex could practically see the hearts in Forrest’s eyes as he looked down at her. She let out a long sigh, sounding so put upon that it startled a laugh out of Alex.
“So, what’s next?” Alex tossed the drying rag to his boyfriend, so he could wipe the suds off of his hands.
“Well, I figured we could stay in for today, at least until open mic starts,” he glanced not-so-subtly at the couch where he had pillows and blankets already set out. “I may have updated my old Hulu subscription so that we could watch Buffy for a while.” He gently tugged on Alex’s hand, leading him over to the couch and began getting the blankets ready for a soft little nest.
“Forrest,” his boyfriend glanced up, a lock of blue hair falling into his face as he did so, “You really didn’t have to do all of this.” He rubbed the back of his neck, not quite able to maintain eye contact with the man in front of him who was staring so adoringly at him.
“You deserve it Alex,” Forrest cupped Alex’s face with his hands, making them lock eyes. “You deserve to be put first, to be cared for.” He couldn’t help himself at that, and surged forward kissing his boyfriend fiercely, before Forrest took it over, turning it soft and languid. He felt the hands move from his face down to his hips and let himself be pulled tight against the other man’s chest. Forrest moved them back, never breaking contact until his knees it the edge of the couch, and they went tumbling onto it, Forrest on his back and Alex spread on top of him.
“Shit, are you ok?” Alex lifted himself off of his boyfriend’s chest a bit, trying to see better, but Forrest made a noise of discontent, and pulled him back in. He began kissing his neck, whispering sweet nothings until he let out a low moan as Alex tangled his hands in Forrest’s hair and gripped tight, trying to keep steady in the onslaught of affection.
The didn’t end up watching much Buffy that day.
__
The nerves were starting to grow as he got ready for open mic. He had showered off the day’s activities and was standing in front of his open closet, trying to decide what he was going to wear out with Forrest. Finally making up his mind, Alex pulled out a pair of dark wash jeans he knew hugged his hips and ass almost sinfully tight, knowing just how much Forrest would love stripping them off him later that night. Next was a dark green shirt, one that he knew made the colors in his eyes pop, and he rounded out the outfit with the black leather jacket he’d taken to wearing. As he was tying his boots up, he noticed movement at the doorway, and knew it was Forrest leaning there, watching him finish getting ready.
“You look amazing Alex. God, I’m so lucky to have you.” He felt heat rise, but instead of brushing off the compliment like usual, he just grinned at his boyfriend, letting himself bask in the sincerity.
“Thanks. You don’t look half bad yourself.” In fact, Forrest looked like he was glowing and comfortable, wearing one of his loose-fitting sweaters and striped shirts, an outfit that Alex knew made him feel grounded.
“Hey,” Forrest moved from his spot by the door and sat on the bed. He started fidgeting with one of the many solid silver rings as he spoke, his voice coming out halting and hesitant, “So, I was going through a box of my old things the other day, and I found some of my old high school rings. And uh, I don’t have much use for them anymore, but I kind of don’t want to sell them.” His knee started bouncing, Alex gently set a hand on it to calm him down a bit.
“Forrest, are you asking if I would want to wear some of your rings?” His boyfriend looked up, startled.
“This doesn’t have to mean anything Alex, not if you don’t want it to. It’s just that I have a lot of them, and I didn’t want to just... I know that we’re still kind of early in this, and I just tho-“ Alex cut his ramblings off his a kiss, sighing into it as Forrest wrapped his arms around him and mussed his hair with his hands.
“I would love to.” He whispered in the space between them when they finally broke apart to breath. Alex could see Forrest’s face break into a grin, and the man reached behind him and rummaged in his pockets before pulling out a small chain with a silver ring hanging on the end.
“I didn’t know what size you wore, so I though this might be best in case they were too small, they’re from years ago.” He held out his hand and Forrest let the chain and ring pool there, warm to the touch from being so close to Forrest’s body.
“Thank you so much for today. It means the world to me that you did this.” Forrest shook his head a bit when Alex spoke and leaned over to put a kiss on his cheek. Alex would never admit but he always felt a thrill go up his spine when Forrest did that. It made him feel adored, wanted just for who he was.
“C’mon we should get going, don’t want to miss my favorite act of the night.” Forrest held out a hand, and Alex took it, letting him help him from the edge of the bed. With the other hand, he slipped the necklace on and felt the heavy reassuring weight of the ring on his chest. It sat there as a testament that he was loved, no matter what.

Forest finds out about aliens and doesn’t respond how Alex expects him to.
Unbeta’d because I wanted this up asap. And, obviously, I don’t know anything about who Forest is. For this, he’s just an OC who appreciates Alex the way I’d like to see him appreciated.
This is for anyone who needs some love and support after the past few days.
***
Forest just stares at Alex, trying to make sense of what he’s said, trying to figure out how the most level-headed person he’s ever dated could possibly be confirming what he’s already found on his own. Aliens are real, Alex’s father locked a bunch of them up and experimented on them, and, oh, yeah, Alex’s ex is one.
“So, that,” he gestures at Alex’s side where he knows a bandage is hiding under his clothes, “Was caused by something alien?”
Alex just nods. Almost carefully. Like he’s afraid of how Forest will respond. He’s curling in on himself on the couch, hands retreating into his sweatshirt. He looks like he’s preparing for a blow. Like he’s expecting one.
He takes another minute, piecing it all together and then, finally, he shrugs. “That’s kinda hot.”
Alex looks up at him, eyes wide. Looking at Forest like he’s grown another head.
“Not the things your dad has done or the aliens,” he waves that aside. “But… I already knew that you’re a soldier. Knew that you’re a badass. But you’re also kind of like a spy, taking down people who are out to commit genocide, even though those genocidal fucks are related to you?” Forest pauses, “Yeah, that’s hot.” When he sees the confusion on Alex’s face, he heads toward a more serious response, though he’s definitely not lying about it. He’s always had a thing for a rebel with a cause, and Alex is most definitely one of those, mixed, maybe, with a bit of James Bond…
Forest refocuses, “Alex, your father is a monster. And you could be on the other side of the planet right now. You could be on a beach somewhere, drinking mai tais with some gorgeous model with an eight pack. But you saw someone doing something unspeakable and… You didn’t ignore it. You didn’t walk away. You’re doing what you can to stop it. Anyone who doesn’t see that…” He shakes his head.
“You don’t have a problem with all of this?” Alex asks. “My father is a monster. That’s where I come from.”
“Where you came from and what your father did isn’t who you are.” He wonders who in Alex’s life made him think that he was responsible for the sins of his father. Who made Alex think he had to right all those wrongs to be worthy. He pauses before saying, “I like you, Alex. For who you are. And, if I can help you in this, you should let me know.”
“I’ll do that,” Alex promises. Forest doubts he will, is pretty sure Alex will try to handle all of it on his own if he can, but he chooses to accept it. He’s put it out there. It’s up to Alex if he wants his help.
Right now, his boyfriend is injured and sad and Forest can do something about a whole one of those things. “So,” he smiles, leaning back on the couch. “How about I order us some pizza and we watch Queer Eye?”
The look of relief on Alex’s face is easily the best thing Forest has seen all day. “Only if you make sure Buffy doesn’t get any this time. You know it’s not good for her,” Alex says, tone lighter than it’s been since Forest arrived.
“I won’t make any promises,” he grins, leaning in for a kiss, so happy when Alex’s fingers make their way into his hair, pulling him closer. Yeah, he knows how lucky he is to have found someone like Alex Manes. And, no matter how long it lasts, he’s not taking a second of this for granted.
***
I learned long ago that the best response to people (intentionally or not) making people feel bad about what they ship is to write smut about that ship (as long as I’m comfortable doing so). Since the Alex fandom has so many ace people in it, I figured this would probably be a better response for all of you. I may not ship it, but I hope you know you’re welcome here if you do. I consider this a big, warm hug for everyone who is hurting due to what some of the louder voices in the fandom have said, and I hope that’s what this is for you. And maybe I’ll write some smut for some of you later. ;)

Filming of RNM starts tomorrow Tuesday August 10th 2021!
Vlamis just said tomorrow they are back and start to film season 4 episode 1! I am so happy but so nervous! Like if Malex isisnt together by the end of season 3 and they aren't filming Malex scenes starting in season 4 episode 1 then I don't want it! I want Malex fluff, growing, going through stuff and evolving together rather than apart. If we get this season ending with no Malex and just have to wait and see what happens in season 4 I may just give up on them. I mean every season we get clowned and they tease us with a will they won't they. They know we want them together and yet play it out where we have to just keep watching to see if and when they will eventually get together. They know if they draw it out fans will still watch because they know we love Malex and will watch anyways. I am 99 percent sure Carina's plan was to not have Malex get together until the last season if not the last episode of the series. I hope one of the changes Chris made was having Malex get together this season so we can have a few seasons worth of Malex because according to Carina and Jeanine the scripts and layout of this season was changed a lot. Also the fact that we only have 13 episodes a season and don't know how many seasons we will get. I am hoping atleast 8 seasons. But anyway I am looking forward to all the RNM behind the scenes we will be getting for season 4! We will be getting the rest of season 3 while we get season 4 content! 🖤
I think malex will get together before the end of the show. There’s only so many obstacles they can come up with. On top of that, when we have other couples hooking up left and right (or on their way there), including the other main couple of the show, they can’t just keep THE ONE couple apart. Especially when it’s the only real same gender couple on the show. Forlex had very little on screen content, and it seems to be over already. Isobel hooked up with Blair once that we saw and apparently she has continued to do so but we haven’t seen it. So yeah, malex has been the only real same gender couple we’ve had on screen. It’s just nagl to let everyone be together in m/f couples but keep apart the one mlm couple for eternity.
Also I answered this late haha but I’m also so glad they’re back on set!!!

Genuinely forgot I could use this as a six sentence sunday post until just now. Anywhodle. I’m having so much fun writing this bonus story for my forlex merman au, Under the Sea, I love revisiting this world and these characters.
No date on when this will be up, as I have, unfortunately and very stupidly, burned myself out in a massive way, and so I’ve been very careful about now overexerting myself (again). I’m writing as much as I’m able every morning, and stopping before I hurt myself. It feels as it did after the season 2 finale, but, hey, I wasn’t able to write at all last week, so this feels like a huge step forward. This bonus story is just meant to be a fun little addition to an already fun merman story. Under the Sea is not really popular at all, but it holds a special place in my heart, so I sincerely hope you can give the bonus story a chance when it comes out.
I also have plans for a lot more malex and forlex (and even kylex and max x alex!) fics, but as I’m in a sensitive writing stage right now (my imagination has been gone the entire week, it’s truly terrifying), I’m not going into detail about any of them, or a post date. I just hope you will stay with me as I work through this frustrating time 💙

Four times they were THAT COUPLE and one time they were REALLY THAT COUPLE
I was writing the last two chapters of my Forlex 5+1 fic when the angst in chapter 5 got to me hard I had to stop and go write some stupidly fluffy stuff. So here it is, some Malex fluff because I only know how to write these two as helplessly in love idiots.
Summary: Four times Alex and Michael show their epic love without even trying to and one time they are obvious about it.
1. Maria and Isobel
Maria wanted to look away, she really did. It was a little bit weird to stare at your ex-boyfriend and your best friend who had finally pulled their heads out of their asses and were currently dating. But she just couldn’t.
To be fair, they didn’t even do much. Alex was saying something, and judging by the serious look on his face and the notes he was showing Guerin, it was not anything casual or flirty, but all business. Guerin appeared to listen earnestly too, he nodded now and then, sometimes interrupted Alex to ask a question or two. In short, they were just having a serious conversation, Maria should know, they were never intentionally being affectionate when she was present, no matter how many times she told them she was totally over Guerin by this point.
So they really didn’t do anything. But the atmosphere around them, somehow exuded intimacy and love, when they looked at each other, even the air seemed thicker. She didn’t know how they did it, and more importantly, how the hell had she missed it before.
Then Alex said something, worry written all over his face. Guerin reached out, closed the notebook in Alex’s hand, and laid his hand there. His pinkie touched Alex’s for about 3 seconds, and Alex visibly relaxed a fraction. Then Guerin pulled back his hand, and they continued to discuss whatever they were talking about, as if nothing happened.
“Ugh, they’re the worst, aren’t they.” Isobel appeared out of nowhere and looked at the couple too, “why do they have to be so in love all the time? It’s inconsiderate to the single ones, not to mention gross.”
Maria was never this grateful for Isobel in her whole life. “So it is not just me, right? I’m not some ex-girlfriend who gets uncomfortable watching her ex and her best friend make heart eyes towards each other?”
Isobel tsked. “Please, the way they look at each other, is SO MUCH MORE than just heart eyes, they could burn the whole place down with only their gaze, it’s nauseating.”
She then stood up, “I can’t watch anymore. I need to break them out of their loving bubble or I’m gonna throw up.”
But she smiled fondly when she walked over.
——————————————
2. Liz and Max
They were having a double-date-turned-movie-night when Liz said, exasperatedly, “Could you please tune it down a notch?”
Michael seemed confused as if he didn’t have a clue why Liz would say such thing to him. “What? You have the remote, you tune it down.”
Liz rolled her eyes. “No, I mean, could you stop being so...” she was lost for words for a moment.
“She meant would you tune down the PDA a notch.” Max, like the knight in a shining armor that he was. came to the rescue.
Michael looked down, to the one foot room between him and Alex on the sofa, and their not-at-all touching bodies, exchanged a question look with Alex, and said, “Last I checked, PDA still means public display of affections, right?”
“And you are practically sitting on Max’s lap.” Alex added.
Liz threw her hands in the air. “We’re doing normal couple stuff! What you two are doing, it’s next level of affection display, OK?”
She pointed an accusing finger to Michael. “Do you even know what we’re watching? Or have you counted all of Alex’s eyelashes at this point?”
To his credit, Michael didn’t even blink. “I was amazed by his eye color because it changed every time the screen light changed, but go on.”
“It’s called reflection you idiot.” Liz was exasperated, “and you did this lip tweak thing every five minutes or so, what was that about? You were like, this close to bursting but still trying to hold it in. It was very distracting.”
There was a little blush this time. “That’s not my fault. Alex has some weird sense of humor, he always laughs at the totally not laughable moments, and I find it cute, so sue me.”
Alex was offended at that. “Well, I find YOU funny, don’t I?”
Michael instantly forgot the existence of Liz and Max, and turned to Alex. “Didn’t say it was bad sense of humor, just weird. And weird can be good, you know. It can be fantastic.”
They looked at each other then, both smiling, until they looked away, Alex’s ears turned a little red, Michael cleared his throat, they didn’t seem to move, but somehow they ended up sitting a bit closer.
Liz sighed. “That’s a no on tuning it down, then.”
————————————
3. Kyle
Kyle had enough.
He was happy for Alex. The guy deserved to be happy, even if his happiness lied on some angry cowboy who disliked him for no reason.
OK there had been a reason, but he proved himself, over and over again, that he was a new man now, even Alex had forgiven him, so Guerin’s dislike was getting a little ridiculous at this point. They couldn’t even have a peaceful conversation without Guerin’s snarky comments, it was tiresome to say the least.
Like now, they were researching the files of Project Shepard together, Alex was showing him some pattern of codes and asked him if he remembered anything from his Dad that could give a keyword to solve the pattern, when Guerin suddenly put a hand around Alex’s shoulder. He didn’t do anything else though, just hand on his shoulder, hips touching, and stood there.
But somehow his demeanor screamed “back off, he’s mine.”
Kyle was a little shocked to be honest. He never saw Guerin like this, and he also didn’t know what he’d done to cause this kind of behavior. He felt like an intruder for standing next to such a blatant display of love and possessiveness.
Then Alex turned a little to Guerin, put his hand into his curls, and pulled, just a fraction, which lasted only a second. When he took back his hand, Guerin took his hand off his shoulder too. His face a shade of pink, his eyes glowing with love and trust. They stood side by side, hips no longer touching.
If anything, Kyle felt even more like an intruder after that.
———————————
4. The whole group
They were having an emergency meeting at the diner.
“I can’t take it anymore”, Isobel whined. “They’re insufferable. I was happy being single, but they just had to ruin it for me!”
“You? What about me? I almost went out with that guy just because they made me feel so lonely!” Maria glared.
“We went together to Planet 7 one night, they were so stupidly in love I almost went home with A GUY too.” Kyle said, if they were competing for the title of “most miserable witness of Malex’s epic love”, he would WIN.
“It’s not easy for the happily dating ones either, OK?” Liz said, “Max is trying so hard these days, because he would turn anything with Mikey into a competition, it’s exhausting.”
“Hey! I’m right here!”
“Anyway”, Liz ignored him, “Halloween is coming. I really don’t want them dressing up like some eternal love story and gazing adoringly into each other’s eyes while in COSTUME. It’s hard to watch when they are in regular clothes already, you know?”
They all nodded. Except for Kyle.
“From what I know, Alex doesn’t do Halloween, so is this precaution really necessary?”
Isobel snorted. “Michael didn’t have any chance to do Halloween before. I heard him talking to Alex yesterday that he would like to do the couple costume thing with him this year. He even brought out his puppy eyes and bashful smile in full mass. I left at that point, because otherwise I’d have to claw my eyes out, but I doubt Alex would refuse Michael anything at that moment.”
Kyle admitted defeat rather quickly.
“So, what do we do?”
———————————
“A themed Halloween party?” Michael asked, with doubt.
“Yes!” Liz replied enthusiastically, “we all have to dress up as the person of our dreams, be it a celebrity or a character, or some historical figure”, she threw a teasing glance towards Max, “it’ll be fun!”
“So, I should just dress up as Alex?”
The whole group groaned.
Alex laughed. “You are doing this so Michael and I won’t do the couple costume, aren’t you.” It was not a question.
Isobel rolled her eyes. “Gee, why would we do that, it’s not like you are THAT COUPLE.”
“That couple?” Alex asked, while leaning into Michael at the word couple, as if he couldn’t help himself. Infuriating thing was, Michael leaned RIGHT BACK.
“You know, the couple that grazes on everybody’s nerves because they are JUST SO IN LOVE that they look like they’re about to jump each other in any given moment but also want to wrap themselves in a warm fluffy blanket and never leave the couch? You are THAT COUPLE.”
“Okay”, Alex said slowly, as if he was struggling to understand, the bastard, “so how would it help the situation if Michael and I dress up as each other at the Halloween party?”
Guerin snorted at that, he seemed SO PROUD OF HIS ALEX for being a dick.
“You are NOT dressing up as each other!” Maria half yelled. “Nobody is dressing up as anybody in this group!”
“Alright! Jesus.” Michael laughed. “We won’t.”
———————————
“What. The. Fuck.” Liz watched Alex and Michael approaching, and she was speechless.
Well, almost. “You promised you won’t dress up as each other, you lied!”
Michael smirked, nose ring and eyeliner firmly in place. “Technically we didn’t. I’m not Alex, I’m his seventeen year old self, and he is a new man now.”
And Alex, honest to God had a curly wig on, smirked in equal measure, “What can I say? You chose an impossible theme for us to do any other costume. Now who’s fault is that?”
Liz hated them so much.
————————————
+1 Cameron
Cameron was waiting for bathroom in wild pony for five minutes now, she was getting impatient.
So when Alex and Michael tumbled out of it, she just couldn’t help herself.
Thing was, they were not even trying to hide the fact that they had been having sex.
Yes, the clothes were intact, the hair obviously combed, they were walking side by side, a reasonable distance between them.
But the satisfied expressions and fucked out bliss were also very evident.
“I always thought sex in wild pony’s bathroom was an urban myth, you know”, she said, conversationally, “who would do it here, I thought, with the smell, the sticky floor and the terrible soundproof condition, surely they would rather up and leave than keeping at it, right?”
Michael, as she predicted, shamelessly smiled, his posture relaxed, slutty even, he winked.
“Worth it for a great lay.”
What she didn’t predict, was for Alex to say, calmly and deadpan.
“And by great lay he means me.”
They continued to leave, now hand in hand.

Very quick, very unbeta’d but here’s some forlex fluff
“How are you even breathing right now?”
Alex looked up at him and laughed and yeah, he did sound a little wheezy. He was sprawled on Forrest’s couch with Buffy stretched out across his chest and stomach. His dog was currently snoring into Alex’s neck and Forrest had a moment of jealousy before he shook his head of the thought. Slow. They were going slow. That’s what Alex wanted, needed, and Forrest was going to give him that.
He set the bowl of popcorn he’d been making on the coffee table. He grabbed hold of Alex’s ankle and lifted his leg so he could sit down. He saw Alex’s hesitant look when he laid his leg over his lap and asked softly, “is this okay?”
The small smile Alex gave him never failed to just get to him. It’d been a little over a month since they’d started this thing between them. Meeting for coffee at the Crashdown, beers at the Pony, a memorable dinner where he made Alex laugh so hard he choked on a piece of steak and Forrest was afraid he’d need to give him the Heimlich.
Forrest was proud of that because even though Alex didn’t talk about it much, it seemed to Forrest it didn’t happen very often; Alex just laughing and enjoying himself without thinking about anything else but the moment.
So when Alex said “yeah, more than okay,” Forrest smiled and laid his hand on Alex’s bare ankle, Alex wiggled around to get more comfortable under Buffy’s weight and they went back to watching the movie.
Yeah. Definitely more than okay.
