I guess I’m feeling better about my house... It’s kind of Jane Austen-formal or Classic Lolita formal.

Formal main room with marble statues and marble floors. Conservatory to the left. Ballroom to the right. Drawing room straight back from the main room. Upstairs is the music room and library. Downstairs is the, uh, crypt. (Look, the house was built over an old cemetery, so the house just kind of...accepted the cemetery. Better than the Poltergeist alternative, okay?)

But...I have this feeling that I’ll want to change it again once it gets to be truly spring, lol. And I bet it’ll suddenly be full-on Sweet Lolita.

It’s actually the Japanese tag for the ship!

Most Japanese ship names (regardless of fandom) are usually two katakana (in this context you can think syllables) for each character, in order of who tops + who bottoms. This is usually the first to syllables of their name, or if more common, a nickname/title/whatever they go by in their fandom.

While the system’s very simple and might be sorta meh to those who prefer reversible ships, I still find it appealing in that it’s almost always universally understood by anyone who’s familiar with the characters, and people also know exactly what they’re getting into in terms of topping/bottoming.

The exception is when the first two syllables of a character’s name overlap with another’s, or means something else when combined into the ship name. This inevitably happens quite a bit, given how few sounds are available in the Japanese language ^ ^;

This is sorta what happened with Crocodile; Crocodile in Japanese is クロコダイル = Kurokodairu, which would make his first two syllables Kuro. Now, even as early on in the OP fandom as Alabasta, there was already a character (albeit one I’ve never actually seen in a ship) with those syllables: Captain Kuro, introduced in Syrup Village. It also just sounds more generic, sounding like the word black, or even “claw” (クロー), and the immediate association isn’t really “crocodile.”

On the other hand, “Wani” means alligator/crocodile in Japanese (they’re the same here), and is also Luffy’s official nickname for Crocodile. It’s also conveniently two syllables, and any one who sees “wani” in Japanese immediately associates the word with the animal. Given the inconvenience of “Kuro,” I feel like this is likely the reason why “WaniLu” became the established ship name combo, and it’s the tag you should use (ワニル) if you ever search for Japanese content of the ship on sites like Pixiv ^ ^

Note: When Luffy’s included in a ship name, it’s usually just “Lu” (ル), because even though his name is two syllables, the second syllable “ffy” (フィ) is compound and you can’t really break it apart without changing the sound. Because that would technically make it 3 characters which is sorta defeating the point of ship tags being short ‘n sweet, we just use “Lu.” Examples: ZoroLu, SanLu, SaboLu, WaniLu, etc.

(as a side note, almost all the OP ship names I’ve seen in Japanese fandom so far have followed traditional ship naming patterns, EXCEPT Katakuri x Luffy. It’s not as established, being both relatively new AND rare, but in addition to “KataLu,” I’ve also seen “MochiGomu,” taking their devil fruit names instead. Perhaps again bc “mochi” is two syllables and so obviously associated with Katakuri, and well if you’re gonna do mochi u might as well do gomu too ^ ^;)

I, just like everyone, am studying two months worth of lectures from THREE subjects which makes about 130 topics altogether. So coffee has been such a pillar. An extremely unhealthy one, but we have no choice. Looking forward to starting working out again... not sure when but very much looking forward to it.
