TURN!George Washington x reader
In between that foggy state of just barely being awake, and heavy eyes pleading with you to succumb back to sleep, you aren’t quite sure what woke you up at first.
In a moment of haziness, the temptation to fall back asleep was too great, and therefore you make the instantaneous decision to do so.
The arm around your waist tightens just slightly, a heavy hum of disapproval at your stirring echoes loudly from the man, yet he does not awake, not entirely, the first time.
Then there’s another bang, something a bit more muffled than the first, is what has Washington nearly falling out of bed.
Careful not to wake nor worry you, he leans up just enough, one of his hands at your stomach and the other at your back, as if he was subconsciously protecting you from likely a crow outside.
Yet, there’s another noise, louder, and a shuffle of feet. It’s too clear to be coming from outside, and far too close to be heard so loudly.
The man comes to the immediate conclusion that someone was inside the house.
You blink awake, feeling his warmth leave you, turning over to try and catch his attention.
“George? What’s the matter?”
Rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you go to sit up as well, but find that you cannot, not immediately anyways.
“Stay,”
He whispers, pulling the covers from his legs and sliding out of bed. You pale, looking fearfully around the room, wondering just what he was doing.
“George—“
“y/n, stay right there, and do not move.”
He mumbles, taking the sword he had leant up against the wall as he exits the bedroom.
Your stomach plummets, bunching the sheets up to your chin as you listen patiently for any more sounds or movements.
You knew well that George could handle it his own way, but that didn’t quell the fear that still remained.
Meanwhile, the man would do everything to keep himself from being bested, wielding his weapon in such a defensive stance that his knees have a slight ache to them.
Cautiously, he descends the stairs, watching for creaky floorboards that would give away his element of surprise.
There goes the noise again, and when he reaches the bottom step, a flash of lightening illuminates the entire first floor.
You, on the other hand, could not sit still. Listening intently for any sound, all you are frightened by is the now incoming storm that erupted so suddenly.
“What is he doing?”
You murmur, ultimately deciding to ignore his instructions and pull yourself from bed, making quick work across the room and out the bedroom door.
At the top of the stairs, you can see that the bottom floor is alight by a lantern, and George is nowhere to be seen.
It isn’t until you begin down the stairs, you are stopped halfway.
“What did I say?”
He grovels, seemingly a bit annoyed that you didn’t listen to his request.
“You were taking so long! What was wrong?”
Washington sighs, beginning up the stairs without much care, meeting you halfway up the steps.
“I kept hearing the noise, but not a soul is in the house. I covered the entire first floor.”
“Sorry,”
You mumble quietly, hands clasping behind your back as you rock innocently on your feet.
He shakes his head.
“I should have known better,”
With a small smile, he joins you on the same step, towering over you as you start back up to your bedroom.
“I didn’t want to! I was worried about you,”
You huff, throwing your hands out in exasperation. George places the sword back in its original place, taking another glance at it before turning back to you.
“I understand,”
George laughs, helping you back into bed, then rounding to his side and pulling you back to his front, arms firm but gentle in their hold.
“If you hear it again, wake me, please.”
You insist, kissing the back of his hand.
“I will, y/n. I promise.”
He leans down to kiss the crown of your head.
“Good night. Sleep well.”
“You as well.”
Then the night sky opens up, and rain falls uninterrupted through the air, hitting the window with as much ferocity as possible.

A while back I asked if anyone knew of any (Video Game) RPGs with Party Building similar to Final Fantasy 1, or Dragon Quest 3.
Someone suggested Etrian Odyssey. What makes me upset about making this post is that they seemed pretty excited to suggest that game to someone who had not played it.
I absolutely hated Etrian Odyssey.
I started the game up multiple times, building and rebuilding my party to find out what worked, what didn't, which classes I liked, how big of a team I should go with etc.
I can't remember how many times I hit New Game to test a different loadout, but one thing that happened was that in earlier runs I cast myself as a Protector, but in later runs I cast myself as a Landsknecht instead.
From my experience, Protectors are supposed to be Tanks, according to the in-game description, but as far as I can tell, their high HP / Vitality comes largely from level-ups, meaning that near the beginning of the game, they're no better at tanking than a Landsknecht, and a Landsknecht kills enemies faster.
Landsknechts are also the only class that can wield Axes. Axes are my favorite medieval weapon, so they were the obvious backup choice for me. Unfortunately choosing Axes was a mistake.
In terms of abilities, a Landsknecht's Axes have "Attack a dude, but ostensibly stronger" "Attack a dude, but with a chance to stun." and "Attack a dude, but with a chance to silence."
Meanwhile, a Landsknecht's swords have "Attack a dude while moving first" "Attack 3 dudes at once" "Attack randomly chosen dudes 2-4 times" and one each of Magical Sword Slashes of the elements Fire, Ice, and Lightning.
So, Axe Wielders kinda-sorta have the ability to cause status ailments, which isn't great because the better solution is always to solve the problem permanently, meanwhile Sword Wielders have multiple forms of Crowd Control, and control over the Elemental Triangle. Ostensibly, Axe Wielders are better at single target damage, but remember; Sword Wielders have an attack that hits multiple times at the cost of hitting randomly chosen Targets, but if there's only one Target they can randomly choose, it's not gonna be a Target for very long.
A sword wielding Landsknecht could potentially solo the entire dungeon.
Giving me a huge list of choices like this, then effectively telling me that there's a "right" way to play is... shitty.
"You want a Protector on your team? Maybe wait until everyone else is level 3 first. How about a Landsknecht for now?"
"You want to use Axes? Axes are lame! Now Swords; Swords are cool. You should use Swords."
the whole thing reeks of a D&D campaign where the DM is choosing classes for the players.
"You want to be an Acrobat? Well, we've already got a fighter, but you could try playing as a Bard, or a Cleric, or a Paladin. We don't have a healer yet, after all."
I've played Dragon Quest 3, of course, so I'm no stranger to certain classes simply being a "wrong" choice, but Etrian is also really mean-spirited on top of it all. Using the D&D analogy again, the DM is an asshole.
In the game's defense, my first run was only such a disaster because I ignored the game's advice to bring at least a party of 5. Bringing a party of 3 wasn't exactly healthy for my action economy. But even a full party of 6 would struggle against some of the games harsher events or... "Formido Oppugnatura Exsequens" - Wow, they really wanted that to spell FOE.
The game goes on and on about how dangerous the Dungeon is. How many people have died exploring it among other things. And I appreciate that the game is at least honest in that regard, that it's dangerous mechanically, instead of just in the lore. But it goes too far.
For example, on the very first floor, there's an event where you come across a field a flowers the DM suggests you can rest in. But anyone familiar with Wizard Of Oz will very likely recognize the setpiece as a trap. For the majority of my runs, I just said "No"... Which caused my team to back away, and then I remembered I need to map the entire first floor, so I went back in to do that and the event was simply gone. On my very last run, I decided "Eh, fuck it. I just saved. Worst that happens is I die and lose a bit of progress." so I clicked "Yes"... and a bunch of Venomflies spawned in and left me as the standing-room-only member of my party (I got a couple of lucky crits and miraculously won). Not only is poison damage outrageously high compared to other JRPGs, but Venomflies don't even appear until your like halfway through the game's second floor!
The dungeon isn't just "Dangerous" - It's so absurdly dangerous that it becomes a parody of itself! No one would realistically be able to make it through this. And frankly, "The adventuring party rests in a forest clearing, only to be accosted by monsters that aren't even native to the area resulting in a party wipe (except for the team's only lady, of course)" is something I expect to see in a poorly written anime porn.
At the start of floor 3[sic] I found an alcove I could examine, and when I did... A snake bit me, and I lost 5 HP or something. That's it. It was relatively minor, but after that moment I just... stopped interacting with the game's events. I just said "No" to everything after that, and even started skipping text. Whatever the DM was selling, I wasn't buying it. The risk was never worth the potential reward. So I simply ignored every event moving forward, and sadly, it was the best decision I made the whole game.
It also made the game really boring.
The game was stripped down to its barest of bare parts. I drew a map, and I fought monsters, and nothing else.
"But TarotCard0, isn't that how you played Dragon Quest 2?" Dragon Quest 2 was charming and adorable, shut up.
The last thing I remember was my one and only attempt at fighting the first boss. An NPC told me that the boss was "Beyond this door" so I did the logical thing; I healed to full and opened the door, expecting to fight a boss. When a fight didn't start immediately, I made a B-line to where I thought the boss would be.
... Apparently by "Beyond this door" what she meant was "2 floors down" and despite descending multiple flights of stairs, it never occurred to me that it was a bad Idea to keep going. I was pretty sick at this point of using magic tethers to heal at the Inn and go back to the start of the dungeon making baby steps of progress until we were too injured to continue and repeating the process over and over, but apparently that's what I was supposed to be doing, because by the time I actually reached the first boss I was severely underleveled (if its damage output is anything to go by).
The game offers to save Map Data on death, but it's in the player's best interest to refuse that so they have an excuse to re-map those areas. More steps = More encounters = More EXP. But I was exhausted. I didn't have the energy to grind enough to take on the boss. I just didn't want to play anymore.
And so, Like a player at a D&D Table with an abusive DM, I eventually realized that the pain of playing the game wasn't worth the opportunity of playing the game, and dropped it like a rock. But only after hours and hours, days and days of convincing myself that it would be worth it, that the DM wasn't toxic, that because this was the first time in so long that I've found a game like this that I can't quit. Until it was finally to much.

Hello visual novel fans and vampire lovers! It’s been a while since I last wrote a postmortem, so I hope I’ll be able to write this concisely (and coherently).
Dahlia was a short visual novel I created in under 36 hours for Velox Formido, a shortform visual novel game jam ran by robobarbie and Allie Vera. It’s inspired by Ludum Dare, one of the longest running game jams in the world where devs are tasked to make a game in 1 weekend based around a theme. I got my start making visual novels by entering Ludum Dare…which was 10 years ago, as of 2024!
I had my eye on this game jam for a while now, as this isn’t its first incarnation. I’ve been a bit burnt out the past year or so, not completely where I can’t make progress but to where I feel like my work has slowed down a lot more than my peers and feel I can’t make anything quickly. When I saw the jam was happening this weekend, I hopped on board once the themes were announced.
the themes
While Ludum Dare has a rigorous process of eliminating themes until it gets down to the final one, Velox Formido has it where there are 5 themes that win and participants have to use at least 2 of them in their entries. The final themes were…
Tumblr media
Enemies with Benefits
Flower Symbolism
Doomed by the Narrative
Trapped with Someone
Forbidden Romance
I started crafting ideas as soon as the themes were announced, which was what the jam started- meaning the clock was ticking!
My first idea was a shounen rivals-esque sapphic story about two rivals meeting up for alone time. I started writing it immediately but moved on to another idea- being trapped with a vampire. I doubt I’ll ever use the first idea, so I’ve shared the snippet I was able to write for it here. Every new line is the other woman talking, so think of it as a quick back and forth.
Even though I had started on this idea, I wanted to write something more… mysterious. Frilly. Girls in cute dresses, to be exact. So I began potting an idea where a girl wakes up to find a vampire in her room, unsure if she’s had her fill yet or toying with her next meal.
the story
The “flower symbolism” theme was definitely my first pick, as I love the concept of it and played around with it in my last visual novel, Asphodelium. I named the characters Dahlia (beauty, change) and Camellia (admiration, longing). Dahlia represents a change in Camellia’s life, a sudden burst of newness. Camellia longs for something different, some way for things to change.
The other theme I picked was “trapped with someone”, as the premise is a girl stuck with a vampire in her room. I didn’t want it to be outright horror, but still a little creepy and tense.
Dahlia "I've had enough pitchforks stuck in my face for today." Camellia "And why is that?" Dahlia "Because your kind isn't too welcoming to my kind." Camellia "I was asking why you were here in the first place." Dahlia "Obvious questions get obvious responses. I needed a snack, of course." Camellia "And you chose my residence." Dahlia "Didn't you say this was your fathers?" Her words curl around the last word, like ivy growing against a trellis. She's clearly already had a "snack", but was it enough to satisfy her? Or am I the main course?
Both of them are somewhat young, but there is still the element of the unknown. This creature clearly already had a meal, but does she want dessert? Is she just toying with her food? Or is she truly delighted to find someone her age to talk to?
With the time constraints I wasn’t able to flesh out much of their dynamic, but I hope it was still an enjoyable taste! The story ended up being about 2.3k words long with 3 endings.
the art
I started doing the art about….12 hours before the jam ended. I love working with fullbody sprites as they offer me a lot more versatility with posing, but I knew I didn’t have time for that here. This time I went for 3/4ths bodies, namely just so I could cut it off at the end of their dresses. I spent about an hour on each of these.
Tumblr media
With the time crunch I didn’t have time to do concepts for them- I just winged it! I knew I wanted Dahlia to have pigtails, though she was originally going to have a purple theme. Camellia was supposed to have proper curls in her hair, but because the game starts with her being rudely awoken, I went with messy waves instead. Think of it as bedhead rather than her actual hairstyle.
I also quickly did a main menu artwork towards the end of my crunch in about half an hour. It was originally going to be the cover art on itchio but Dahlia’s >:D sprite looks more striking.
Tumblr media
For the backgrounds I went with free photos from Unsplash and edited them. Personally, I like the look of filtered photos as backgrounds depending on the aesthetics of the game.
I didn’t have time to edit the GUI aside from the textbox, which was NVL mode.
the presentation
Dahlia is stylized fully in NVL mode, with the textbox to one side of the screen. I love NVL mode for scenes focused on narration and setting the right mood.
Tumblr media
I was considering making the game a different resolution, but because the NVL mode is to the side rather than the entire screen I wanted to make use of the widescreen resolution.
The game is set late at night, so each of the backgrounds had to be nighttime. To match with this, I tinted the sprites to match each of them. For example, the above tint looks like this:
transform nightcolor: matrixcolor TintMatrix("#8594d6") * BrightnessMatrix(0.03) image dahlia night = LayeredImageProxy("dahlia",nightcolor)
I wanted to try something more complex like a tint + another light source overlayed onto the sprite, but ran out of time.
Another part of the presentation I did was to have a variety of shots. I had a very limited about of art to work with (only changing mouths and eyebrows, no arm poses or eye positions) so I knew I had to be smart about how I composited the scenes.
One thing I’ve done in other visual novels was to have one character further away and have another closer to the camera but their sprite turned black. This allows me to give the illusion of depth without having a sprite of the back of each character’s head.
Tumblr media
for instance, this is that technique in Canvas Menagerie
Doing this in Dahlia was a quick and easy way to make the visuals much more interesting rather than swapping between two mostly static sprites the entire game.
Tumblr media
The way I do it in other games is on a per-sprite basis, meaning I set brightness and position each time. It’s hectic, really! But because of the time limit for this jam, I was able to come up with a much quicker way to set it up.
transform lefttt: zoom 0.5 xalign 0.3 yalign 0.05 transform leftttb: zoom 0.8 xalign -1.6 yalign 0.1 matrixcolor(BrightnessMatrix(-1)) xzoom -1
The lefttt transform is for the character in the back- in this example, that’s Camellia. The leftttb transform (b standing for “black”) is for the character in the foreground who’s shrouded- in this example, that’s Dahlia.
Basically, the leftttb transform sets the sprite to a bigger size than the farther away sprite, sets the position, and then makes the color completely black before flipping the sprite (because this should be us seeing them from behind).
I also did quite a few small animations in the game, such as Dahlia dancing around or bouncing up and down. You define it once as a transform and can reuse it again and again.
transform dance: ease 0.7 xoffset -59 linear 0.25 ease 0.6 xoffset 74 linear 0.19 ease 0.76 xoffset -70 linear 0.3 ease 0.7 xoffset 102 linear 0.2 ease 0.8 xoffset 0
If you’d like to see the code in action, then guess what- I’ve released the entire source code for the game on GitHub! Feel free to sift through it to see the components in action and copy some of the code for your own projects. All I ask is that you do not redistribute the game (i.e. download the code, make a build in Ren’Py, and redistribute that as your own game).
wrapping up
I’m pretty happy with how Dahlia came out. It’s short and visually distinct and helped “prove” to myself that I’m capable of making visual novels in a weekend still. I tried to avoid spoilers here, so if you haven’t played it already then give it a try!

I have 2 vague ideas for Velox Formido (dependent on the selected themes obviously) and ngl I'm super excited for either of them
It's either another Weird Game or a dark otome esque entry
