#fotj: apocalypse

I just spent like 2 hours infodumping on Discord about a Skykhai AU that's kind of inspired by Myn and Lara's plot in the Wraith books.
Basically, Ves is sent to infiltrate the Jedi half a year before FotJ even starts, and having to fit in with that environment brings out the altruistic and compassionate impulses that have always been in her, as she and Ben are falling in love, and Vestara is, debatably of or against her will, finding a family in the Jedi and questioning everything the Sith ever taught her.
Then when FotJ does happen, she tags along on the quest with Luke and Ben, and coming into contact with the Sith again causes her to have all kinds of existential issues about who and what she is.
At some point in Ascension, the Jedi find out that she was a Sith and had been lying to them, and the ensuing fight leads to her ostensibly rejoining the Sith, except she actually spends Apocalypse constantly sabotaging them from the inside out.
Due to her accomplishments there, as well as a twist that I want to actually hopefully surprise some people with, she is recognized by the Jedi as having had a redemption arc and she gets to come back and stuff.
Sleep deprivation is starting to set in now.

So, Everything Is Jacen Solo's Fault.
And like? I mean, yes? But also we're doing some Olympics worthy mental gymnastics to try to say that Jacen somehow released Abeloth.
But I can't lie, the fact that Caedus Continues To F**k Up Everyone's Sh*t even after death delights me, lol.

Just finished FotJ: Apocalypse and if I never read another book with tentacles again, it'll be too soon.

Correct me if I’m wrong but in those fugitive Doctor flashbacks the Doctor was living through, no one at any point referred to her as ‘the Doctor’ did they? Just boss. Even though we know that was what Ruth!Doctor called herself in FotJ, and would have presumably called herself at that time? Seemed like a similar enough timeline, she was wearing the same clothes and all.
So wouldn’t this mean Karvanista should be familiar with ‘the Doctor’? Should have batted an eye when the thirteenth Doctor started pestering him pre Halloween Apocalypse?

i’m like, slowly working my way through legends continuity, i guess, but i’m definitely going to skip the yuuzhan vong and save that stuff for after i read all my other books, so at some point i’ll go back in time to outbound flight and i have no idea what i’ll do for my fate of the jedi reread, because i own outcast and omen but none of the others and i have crucible too which i haven’t read, and i want to reread fotj before reading x-wing: mercy kill so i refresh my memory on what the hell was up with the galaxy after apocalypse but like???? aaa

Halloween Apocalypse thoughts(tm) part 2 (yes, over 12 hours later, i got distracted LMAO and anyway this is mostly for me :’>)
- ah, Azure’s Arctic Circle prison.......... honestly that’s one thing i WISH Flux had been able to expand more on and i guess this is what got left on the cutting room floor when they have to shorten the serial from 8 episodes to 6 episodes? what’s been left in is just SO tantalisingly interesting. like i can understand why this was one of the aspects of the story that got cut but now i am Haunted by the idea of what could have been. i do like how “wipe their memories, make them think they’re an entirely different species, stick them into what is for all intents and purposes a Comfortable sort of prison” seems to be a Division staple between what they did with Azure (has Married vibes with who i can only presume is her jailer, seems happy(?) in her alter ego, seems to be under the impression that she’s in witness protection or SOMETHING given that she knows the beacon that comes through the door is some sort of warning and proceeds to just smash it with a hammer) and what they did with the Doctor (mind wiped of everything, potentially forced back into being a child, grew up on Gallifrey thinking they were just like any other Time Lord initiate). also speaking of the beacon like, is that how Swarm found her??? was the beacon Also sent by Tecteun deliberately to lead Swarm to Azure so he could break her out of her brainwashing and they could wreak havoc on the universe??? there’s also Something here about the clear parallels being drawn between Azure’s situation with thinking she’s in some kind of witness protection (just my Theory tbf but like. the Vibes) when she’s actually being imprisoned vs the other time in this era we’ve seen the “aliens disguised as humans in hiding” scenario ie Ruth and Lee in FOTJ... the difference being the Doctor willingly hid herself using the chameleon arch to try and shake Division and they were unintentionally found bc Lee just couldn’t give up his service medal (FASCINATING actually how he held on to that even though he and the Doctor were trying to get Out at the time. mirrors new-who Drs 10 through 12′s rose-tinted Gallifrey nostalgia. now i just wanna dissect that entire bit with the medal but this is not a fugitive of the judoon post sgsljg), whereas Azure was placed into this situation against her will and is being very intentionally found and restored via Tecteun’s manipulations. im spitting out a whole load of Nonsense here but ykw i’m having fun
- other commonality connections between Dan and 13: when kidnapped and imprisoned their immediate impulse is to be as Annoying towards their captors as possible. they are in many ways the same kind of idiot
- FLUX HAS SO MANY REWATCH BONUSES........... i was so Confused by Claire the first time i saw this episode but now Everything she’s saying in this first meeting with 13 and Yaz makes complete sense with the knowledge that she’s a Seer and Very Psychic. the rewatch value of this serial is bonkers
- ask me if i’m over how Yaz co-pilots the TARDIS now because i AIN’T like wtf. nobody in-universe in the current era has the context to understand how Big of a deal that is bUT I DO!!!!! honestly a lil bit hurtful how they’re so in sync while piloting and then .5 seconds later Yaz is back to (justifiably!! rightfully!!) Pushing bc 13 said something Concerning, Actually and then immediately tried to deflect and not talk about it in such a transparently dickish way LMF. at least tell Yaz the reason you’re dragging her along seeking mysterious dogmen who dangle you both above lakes of acid is so Personal you don’t actually know how to begin talking about it you asshole!!
- congratulations to Flux for making the Weeping Angels terrifying and creepy again in a way they haven’t really been since Blink. also this entire sequence with Claire struggling to find her keys in her bag just has me going “and this is why i keep mine in my pocket so i can just shove my hand in there at a moment’s notice”. the ANXIETY and tension here... its Good. also love the way they’ve let us know (if we’re paying attention) that Claire is going to have Anything That Holds The Image Of An Angel Becomes Itself An Angel problems with that shot of the angel reflected in her eyes. very nice Show Not Tell folks, very nice indeed
- Vinder!!! gosh i love everything about Vinder’s introduction. the music. the way that we already know that this guy is so Done with whoever he’s sending these transmissions to. his little observation outpost has a similar aesthetic to sanctuary base 6 and tbh that was one of the best Ten-era 2-parters so that is just a little thing that makes me like the design of the outpost on a personal level. ALSO the little close-ups we get to the few things that are His like there’s an empty mug, some half-eaten porridge but also a little plant?? this dude really got sent into exile and was like. “okay but i’m going to have a desk plant tho.” but also just. the fact that his first lines are “the universe is looking particularly beautiful today”. “the sheer beauty of what i can see is unimaginable” combined with that sweeping shot of space and the swelling music like......... yea it says a lot about Vinder but i also really like this sequence bc it captures some of what i remember falling in love with about Doctor Who back in 2005, the idea that the universe IS beautiful even if everything has to end?? then of course Vinder concludes his report with his “usual sign-off request that you all go to hell” like LMFAO. gosh. what an establishing character moment. we find out in the space of like 2 mins that this guy has been exiled and is Bored out of his skull but also that he finds beauty and meaning in the universe and ALSO that he is Determined not to let whoever sent him here break his spirits and also equally as determined to make sure they know that too like. this is a GREAT character introduction.
- i love that 13 was still carrying around that crisp packet she caught the hopper virus in from orphan 55 in her pocket still like. do you EVER empty your pockets Doctor or do you just carry around all this random junk on the off-chance you might one day need it. i bet there’s a dead mouse or something in there
- Karvanista visibly sniffing his weapon when 13 disables it with his sonic screwdriver is a very endearing little detail and i love it
- Yaz and Dan’s first meeting with her breaking him out!!! honestly quite funny and also sad how Yaz is so Blatently channelling the Doctor here but i also love how IMMEDIATELY as soon as Dan heard that Yaz was from Sheffield he proceeded to engage in that time-honoured tradition of dissing any region of the country that is not yours and Yaz fired back with the equally time-honoured tradition of telling that person not to say a Single word against where you come from again. honestly it’s still one of my personal fave bits of Chib-era Who that all of the companions have this regional pride and attachment to the part of the country they’re from (Yaz with Yorkshire, Dan with Liverpool, even Graham gets excited in Spyfall when he realises Barton’s plane landed in Essex and has a moment to be like THIS IS MY MANOR WE ARE GOLDEN) because i know that!!!! i recognise that!!! i personally will 100% identify with the little corner of the country that i come from before anything else lmao. idk it’s just a really neat realistic detail that makes me really happy
- 13 getting distracted not once but Twice from grilling Karvanista for this extremely important and personal to her information that she has been chasing him across the universe for by a loud and insistent ongoing beeping from his species recall signal. but also the fact that apparently the Flux is common enough knowledge among space-faring species by now that Karvanista is stunned that 13 doesn’t know about it (and she doesn’t know about it because “she’s been busy” being hyper-focused on tracking Karvanista down and shaking him down for information about the Division. stunning, absolutely incredible
- honestly the shots of the Flux engulfing planet after planet accompanied by Vinder’s panicked commentary as he tries to record as much of this event as possible to warn whoever he’s reporting to are really well done. like i know exactly what the Flux is and those cgi sequences of entire planets being swallowed up by this thing are still triggering a very primal response in me
- Dan is full of so much FIGHT ME energy and i adore him
- more gorgeous shots of the universe with swelling music to remind us that all of this beauty is what is getting wrecked by the Flux!! also lmao. Dan really is just Yaz’s companion straight out the gate isn’t he. Yaz is the one who tells him the name of the TARDIS, comments on how there’s nothing at the edge of the solar system but an amazing view, explains that the reason they can all breathe is bc of the air bubble around the TARDIS.
- i got so swept up in the sequence of the TARDIS outrunning the flux and the lupari ships locking around Earth to shield it even though i know what happens that i forgot to write anything down which i guess says something LMAO but i do love how this sequence shows what a big heart Karvanista has under all that gruffness earlier. he wants to save the humans!! he wants the Doctor + friends to get themselves behind the shield wall!! karvanista Cares!!!
- honestly cracking open the heart of the TARDIS like a cold one with the lads only for the vortex energy to seemingly do Nothing to the Flux was EXACTLY the way to signify just what a huge deal this was to my ‘was introduced to this stupid show with Nine’ ass who still remembers the Bad Wolf disintegrating an entire Dalek fleet with vortex energy in the s1 finale. like what a cliffhanger lmf

Starting with Backlash, I kinda want to rewrite the fotj series.
Honestly I feel like Aboleth had a lot of potentail that didn’t really get used, and Denning was the only one who really did anything with her. I wish she had been written more like HABIT from EverymanHYBRID who was a possesing choatic entity who’s allegence bounced around from side to side and who basicly did all he could to toutrue the loved ones of his host. The kind of villain who just wants to fuck with your brain for no other reason then they find it fun would have been super awesome for a chataer like Aboleth.
The authors also tell us over and over that she’s a monster, but aside from body snatching(and Apocalypse) we don’t really see that; to paraphrase from Electricboa’s fanfiction she acts like ‘a jilted prom date demanding everyone know how pretty she was.’ I also thought that the whole ‘beloved queen of the stars’ thing was a little ham-fisted.
Also all of Ascension could have been handled better. It’s not that it was bad, in fact, there are somethings done quite well. For one, I think it did a pretty good job of setting up the political situation, and showing how Luke’s plan worked, but what it did wrong, holy crap.
I feel like sith or not Vestara would be more traumatized after being orphaned and cut off from everything she once knew. Come to think of it same could be said of Ben after the events of LotF. And that could have been a very important bonding point for them, but it wasn’t really fleshed out like it could have been, and the scene where it was was handed kind of...tactlessly.
I also think that I would leave out Vestara becoming a jedi, and just have her firmly leave the sith. I’m going to quote that fanfiction again: ‘"I want to be with you, but I can't join you like you want to. I don't think I'm evil, I actually rather like what the Jedi do, I just can't do it like them."’ Please go read this ff. It really is good. I think grey is just a better stance for her as a character.
As an aside: because I’m paranormal romance trash, I’ve always liked the thought of ‘soul-bonds’ or whatever you want to call them, and because I’m an edgelord I’ve also alway fancied the idea of two people triggering one who don’t necessarily like each other/get along, and each having to learn to live with the other. I don’t know, maybe it’s a Ben x Ves AU I’ll get around to writing sometime. It was an idea I had for the rewrite(that I’ll probaly never actually do) that was scrapped early on.
But hey, this is just my opinion. I’d love to hear what any other fans of this series think.

@chooseandact reblogged your post “Blog title source” and added:
*Finally replies to this* (I was busy, k?) *links back to ref’d post bc I forgot to do so when posting submission*
As you've noticed, I'm the same way.  Maybe I'm just a Delay Fish.  IDK.  Putting under a read more.
Took me a sec to understand your shelving, @insectoid5, bc I saw it from bottom up, left-to-right (you’ll see why in a bit). Though I’m curious why you have Sacrifice at the bottom of the 3rd front column and Inferno at the top of the 4th back column. Wouldn’t it make sense to stack them in columns across the shelf then make another row, instead of stacking columns along the shelf width? (see my pics for a visual) Or better yet, just do simple rows, book spine facing out?
😅  They're arranged EU-chronologically, from oldest to newest: top to bottom, back to front, left to right.  And the front stacks carry to the back of the next column.  (Well, it made sense at the time.)
And it’s convenient you already posted the same pic. Recycle, yay! Also, you know how you said all your LotR books may border on excessive? (See? Told you I’m an archivist!) Two things on that:
I should probably let you know that almost EVERYTHING I do borders on excessive, or obsessive. 😂
1.  That’s me & SW, basically. I also have some Guide books (Characters, Droids, Atlas, etc.), but I don’t have the comics. *shrug* Every house has it’s own def’n of Peak [Insert fandom] Media.
2.  As Catrina said, “The thing about [insert fandom] books is that when you start buy[i]ng them, you don’t think you’re collecting. Then you run out of space and, well…” Of course, this just means you must follow Lawrence’s advice: “you need hidden cargo compartments [so] you can add bookshelves to the ceiling.” :P
Isn't that the truth!  First there isn’t enough money for books, then there's not enough space on the shelves for the books (hence the 2-deep stacking), and there's not enough space for bookshelves... 😂
About 87 total. Normally, I stack them across like bookstores because of the stupid space on the right, and how the bottom-most books will start bending due to the weight since the shelf isn’t actually flush with the wall. This results in an arrangement ~22 across (on avg.) and 3 rows deep that completely fills the shelf, so LotF and FotJ go on the next level down by themselves. Which, considering their highly contested status among fans because of what happens, seems somehow appropriate (though IMHO, Dark Nest is where things really start going nuts. It’s a tailspin from there until Mercy Kill.) Despite this large number, there’s 33 books I haven’t read: MedStar [2], The Last Jedi [1], Kenobi [1], Scoundrels [1], all of X-Wing*[10], Thrawn Trilogy* & Duology* [3+2], Vector Prime to Edge of Victory II [5], Dark Journey [1], Destiny’s Way to The Unified Force [3], Vortex to Apocalypse [4])
I haven't read Mercy Kill yet, or Crucible.  I still intend to, eventually.
Side: In your tags, why is Legends in two sets of double quotes? Typo?
Exaggeration, because I don't like the new name, or the way Disney essentially threw the EU out the nearest airlock.  (It's actually four sets of single quotes, since Tumblr doesn't play nice with double quotes in tags.)
* Shush, you. I can feel the judging already. I was raised in the late NJO period, K? I saw few, if any Bantam books in stores, so it may as well have not existed for me. Granted, I wasn’t looking for them: I admit to having had a “SW = Jedi/Sith Only” mentality for a while, thus excluding pilots. BIG mistake; if I LOVED Enemy Lines, why not get other books focusing on fighter pilots?
Relax, friend!  I started much the same way.  Eventually I did read the X-Wing books, and I LOVED them, especially Allston's.  (Which is why I really should read Mercy Kill, since IIRC it was the last SW book he wrote before his passing.)

Questions for management: One: What do I call you, outside of this box (if not management)? Two: What time section is your Ves from? (Like before or after Crucible, if after how long after)? Three: How much of canon are you using, and are/will you be accepting fanfics into the "canon" of this blog?*wink wink*
{You can just call me Gail. To your next question, post-Apocalypse, but disregarding Crucible(mostly because I don’t remember much about the book, other than not enjoying reading it, and not having it fit in my fannon) and the current time on the blog is roughly six months after FotJ after crashing on a world deep in the Unknown Regions called Terra. Other than Crucible pretty much all other FotJ cannon applies to Vestara on this blog, with added headcanons, mostly occurring around the time of Backlash, Allies, and Vortex that will allow me to have Ben(and other characters) to be on this blog as well, and fanfic canon is absolutely welcome!

LotF/FotJ: Miscellaneous Reactions/Outprocessing 13
Wait. Aurra Sing is still alive? What the absolute fuck?
Maybe I just have way too high of standards, considering I'm the kind of person who has a specific headcanon for how much energy a hypermatter annihilation reactor gives per cubic meter of its volume, but it seems like Denning in particular does not give much thought to how the tech shit works. I mean, I can say that of about all the authors here, but in Denning's books it's especially obvious.
When one of the Sith frigates gets crushed in the debris from Sinkhole Station, there's an explicit reference to a ChaseMaster's crew count being "dozens."
I feel like the part about how Abeloth has wreaked apocalypses on the galaxy before, in eons beyond memory and stuff, would work better if it was something that had been built up for a lot longer than this series. As it is, even though the Keshiri myths about it and stuff are brought up as soon as Omen, it feels like kind of a shoehorn.
I want to see more of Vestara piloting stuff.
Is his name Dyon Stad or Dyon Stadd? This seems to change often.
Do they ever use voice commands to start a fucking elevator or open a door in the movies? That happens a lot in these books and I feel like it's... stylistically incoherent.

What happens to Daala at the end of FotJ?
I'm just idly wondering if there is anything I can do with her in Voices of the Force that's actually interesting enough that I'd care to do it.
And I'm not touching Apocalypse again.

Idk how I feel about this blatant reverse Order 66 where the Jedi just slaughter the Sith, especially since the text doesn't seem very critical of the tactic so far?
Like, I get that The Sith Are Bad, but the coldness with which the Jedi are essentially enacting genocide is...a bit chilling??
I have lots of feelings about the Lost Tribe of the Sith, okay?
Anyway, I'm just here for Vestara Khai.
(Also I read it a little while ago, but that body horror sequence with Abeloth was just. A lot. Please protect Wynn Dorvan, omg.)

So, I finished Apocalypse yesterday and...it was alright. Like, it was fine. But I guess I was expecting something a bit more...idk, apocalyptic????
Still, I enjoyed the series as a whole. I don't love a lot of the heavy retconning of Legacy of the Force and especially New Jedi Order, but in a post-Rise of Skywalker world that's honestly small potatoes.
Speaking of TROS, anybody else feel like an Abeloth analog would have been a better villain alternative to zombie!Palps or is that just me. I mean, I know how much Disney canon loves its tentacle monsters, so it would have been perfect, c'mon, lol.
Also do we ever get follow up on Vestara? I know there aren't very many books after this in the timeline, so it seems unlikely. Which is unfortunate 'cause I love my girl.
