Queer Subtext in "The Guest" (Korean Dorama)

Or... how I justed wanted to watch a Gen Supernatural show and ended up falling for it's Beautiful M/M love story.

I don't know if you watch korean doramas, I do. This time I was on Netflix with my husband looking for a supernatural show, after watching a couple of it, and we crashed into "The Guest".

This attempt of analysis of the queer Subtext will have some spoilers so, If you don't want to be spoiled, jus scroll down. But go watch this show. Hahahaha

Disclaimed that, let's go to the East Sea...

Pansexual Flag for CHOI YOON and gay flag for HWA PYOUNG.

First apparition of Father Choi YOON, walking down a dark alley. You will find by his right, against a closed business shutter, Pansexual Flag Colors. What a presentation card for a priest, and is so symbolically beautiful, because philosophically, the spiritual leader should have the ability to love every creature, no matter what. So it applies to the decision of the writers to make Yoon linked to that kind of love.

Then we have Pyung, the medium. This boy is very enthusiastic, but he has surrounding him his grandfather and his best friend asking him, almost continually, to find a girl and get married. The poor medium doesn't answer, and he looks annoyed each time they mention that.

In one opportunity his grandfather asks if there's something wrong with him, and the boy snorts slightly, avoids eye contact and says, frustrated "No, grandpa."

Jumping to another scene... Yoon and Hwa Pyung are in the car, and Pyung's best friend, the shaman, is alone in another car. While they're talking by the phone, we can see behind the shaman the pride flag colors. And now you will ask... Why? Well... There's this part of the dialogue between Pyung and the shaman, in which he asks why he has to be alone in the car and Yoon and Pyung are together in the other car... Ahem... Pyung hungs the phone without answering. And the scene cuts to the shaman, with the pride flag in the background. The shaman frowns confused.

Nothing to add here...

Heart broken

There's two opportunities in which Pyung shows how heartbroken he was... Because of Yoon and how the writers wrote it with romantic subtext.

The first time Pyung faced Park Han, the assamblywoman, Choi YOON got mad and tells the detective he won't work anymore with Hwa Pyung.

Scenes after this, we have a very sad Pyoung in the shaman house, and his friend notices his sadness and asks if he was dumped.

Pyung looks somewhere and he repeats: "Yeah, I was dumped..."

Who just had dumped our cute medium? Well... Our cute priest.

Another scene in which he is in a worst depressed shape, again, in his best friend's house, he mentioned, gloomy, that at least someone is bothering him... Why? What had just happened in this episode? Well, Choi YOON said to him he couldn't trust him.

The shaman, insightful as he was, says that he looks too sad those days. And when Choi YOON goes surprisingly to his house, the shaman asks the priest if Pyung's depression is because he is in love with the detective. Well, kind of. I can't be very specific with the dialogues because I watched it with spanish subtitles. But that was the idea they transmitted.

Always looking when the other is not looking. And the handsome priest...

And remember in the police station when Pyung called Yoon the handsome priest that gives advises to the congregation in front of the cop?

Another huge subtext is Yoon looking at Pyung when he's not looking and Pyung looking at Yoon when he's not looking. Always related to sad things of their last being revealed or called back. And why is this meaningful and it has to be taken as queer Subtext or romantic?

Kang Hil Young is their female detective friend. As a very insightful person, she notices the relationship between these two boys and in the scenes, she's always separated from them but also she's a kind of nexus. Because both boys talk with her, instead of talk with each other, as the stubborn and shy boys in love they're.

All the "stealing glances" scenes are centered between Pyung and Yoon. And less about Hil Young. This is written on propose to show Yoon and Pyung relationship is different to Pyung and Hil Young or Yoon and Hil Young relationships. Because the boys have this aura between them, this romantic tension always around them. That doesn't happen when they're with Him Young.

The precious one, the fight and the "Titanic like" scene.

Pyung will ask Hil Young to save Yoon instead of him. He is determined to give his life in exchange of the priest. He calls Yoon THE PRECIOUS LIFE THAT YOUR MOTHER SAVED, when he asks Hil Young to take care of Yoon. Why would a bro ask to his friend to take care of his bro? Why he didn't ask to this bro to take care of his friend instead? 🤔😜

Pyung always showing up at Yoon's place after a hard day? Why Yoon? Why not Hil Young's place too?

Also the scene of Pyung trying to hide a talisman but at the same time, sliding his hand with it inside of Yoon's pants and Yoon gay panic face yelling: 'What are you doing?' And Pyung insisting in puting that talisman inside Yoon's pants and then failing, frustrated because Yoon discovered it was a tasliman?

Priceless... And gay.

The scene of the fight between Yoon and Pyung WAS HELLA DRAMATIC AND FULL OF ROMANTIC SUBTEXT!

First of all, we had that music playing while Yoon tried to force himself to believe Park Il do (the demon) was inside of Pyung, because if he wasn't... That's would mean the demon was possesing Father Yang, that was like a second father to our cute priest.

Second, both friends had UNSHED TEARS in their eyes.

Third: Pyung was too heartbroken to react.

Fourth, the Yoon ended up ON TOP OF HIM WITH HIS HAND ON HIS THROAT, that, my friends, was one of the most hot m/m scenes. They remained like that, not strangling, but just his hand holding his throat. Like... Yeah. Go get a room.

When they thought everything was finished. Pyung was staying in his town and called Hil Young asking her to bring his stuffs from his apartment. To which she replies 'why don't you ask Yoon?' And our shy medium replies "He's too busy."

So, Yoon and Pyung didn't call each other, but they both called Hil Young.

She asks Yoon to be nice with Pyung because PYUNG HAD ASKED HER TO TAKE CARE OF HIM INSTESD OF PYUNG. (Yeah, she confessed that to the priest)

And i suspect she told Yoon about Pyung asking her for his stuffs because the medium considered Yoon was TOO BUSY. Why? Because the scene in which Yoon shows up in Pyung's town to check the people that had been posseses, he calls Pyung.

Our cute medium goes immediately : BUY MEAT, I'M FEELING SICK, STAY TONIGHT TO SLEEP IN MY HOUSE, and what does reply the priest? I'LL THINK ABOUT IT. NOW I HAVE TO GO BECAUSE I'M TOO BUSY. And he hangs the phone smirking!!!! Translation?

'I'm too busy because you said I'm too busy to bring your stuffs! I thought you didn't want to see me and now you are too happy to see me!!?? Watch me flirt with you and show you I'm not that easy.

And also, the poor girl is so tired to be the third wheel...

When they said goodbye in the road, Hil Young goes inside the car but Yoon and Pyung were there... Trying to sound cool, and 'You did well's 'Yeah, you top's, like two dorks, while the female friend watched them as if she was saying COME ON!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS? At the end Pyung confessed he was about to give his life in exchange of Yoon's life... And shy priest just goes inside the car.

But everything goes to hell when Park Il Do posseses Pyung and tries to strangle Yoon.

What did our cute medium yell to the demon? 'Don't touch him! Don't you dare to touch him!"

The scene is so romantic I showed my friend (who didn't watch the show) a gif and she said WTF IS THAT? TITANIC?

Because, yeah, hella gay. They hel hands and then... Pyung reacts and before pushing Yoon's hand to release him to the surface, he rubbed his freaking fingers!!!!!

Not to mention he wss carrying with the rosary the priest left in his hand under the water for one entire year even when he wasn't catholic!!! HE DID IT BECAUSE YOON GAVE IT TO HIM!

To Conclude:

The subtext of a queer love story was magnificencia displayed, but it was more beautiful to see how inncoents, and shy and cute these two were with each other. So if you wanna see a cute m/m love story plus friendship loyalty and action, watch this dorama. I plenty recommend it!

Oh!!!! I always had this headcanon that she collected rocks as a kid. Just cool fuckin’ rocks that she’d find and take home, just piles of rocks that she left under her bed in her parent’s apartment when she left to live in Wayne Manor.

The thing about a superhero('s sidekick) being in love with you is that pesky things like living on the fourth floor of a selective-entrance dorm building isn't going to stop her from dropping in uninvited. Though it's a little harder for her to slide in through open windows than it was when she was thirteen, Robin (and, later in my timeline, Batwoman) would fry the building's electronic locking mechanism, grapple up the side of the building in the middle of the night, or just pose as another college kid who had forgotten her keycard inside. (Later on, when I'd ask some other people on my floor about what they thought when they saw her walking around all the time, they'd shrug and say, "Was she not with you? You two were always hanging out– you always looked more happy than irritated when she was around.")

But then, she's busy, what with that whole defending-this-nightmare-city schtick. I'm glad I inherited my dad's ability to go longer with less sleep, because otherwise, trying to keep up with Carrie's patrol schedule would suck. Letting her show me around Gotham is... kind of the coolest.

Well, okay, first of all we would need to establish if we were okay with harm befalling these living confectioneries. How sentient are they?? Have they grown limbs, or are they rolling off the counter on their sides? Are they multiplying, or did I just decide to bake an overwhelming amount of cookies???

This has to be some sort of magical influence, so unless we want to start eating them while wondering if they have pain receptors– or the capacity to feel fear– we're gonna have to bite the bullet and call Oracle. If anyone would be able to find out who decided to curse our cookies with revolutionary intent, it'd be her– once we had that information locked down, we'd have to locate the culprit, intimidate them into revoking their curse of life, etc, etc.

That would take at least a day, though, so in the meantime, we'd have to contain the cookies. Again, assuming we're not going full cookie-murder, we'll want to contain them. Then that would open up the rabbit hole of the ethics of keeping living creatures packed in a tupperware container???? We don't have enough tupperware to give them all their own enclosure, Carrie, I don't know what we're supposed to– what do you mean, airholes, do you think these cookies need to... wait, do the cookies need to breathe? Hang on–

And by that time the cookies would have already gone straight for the couch cushions.

OKAY. First of all - Rei’s SCATHING GLARE!!!! Keiko’s acting is so FUCKING ON POINT! She swings her arms out of her father’s minion’s grasp, glares at the woman who’s the leader first, then to the bodyguard who DARED to touch her, and then glared at the woman - probs Senator Hino’s secretary (he probs changed secretary later by the time Act 33 rolled around because this one obviously upsetted Rei and then lost her) AGAIN.  In a power move, she turns her head first, clearly showing she is FUCKING PISSED, and gets into the car herself. She’s not going to like this and make it easy for any of them, but she’s also not going to lose dignity over this being being manhandled by her father’s minion.  Rei KNOWS how to play games too and maintain power even if shes on the losing side in a power struggle. 

And Makoto? She’s confused AF. She wasn’t sure - it looks like a kidnapping, but really? In the middle of the day? What are the chances it’s happening right in front of her, in real life? Thought those only happen in fiction??? (kinda breaking the fourth here hahahaha).  But when the car drives off, she BOLTS after it!  She doesn’t know for sure what’s going on, but it’s obvious that her friend? If not friend, at least comrade, is UNHAPPY, and thus likely in trouble.  Because let’s be honest, who has the power to make Rei do anything when she doesn’t want to, and obviously Rei is pissed AF from the encounter?   Again, the scene from the day before already solidly threw Rei into Makoto’s “must protect” category, despite the questions she has, Makoto’s not playing around and she’s gonna act on her instinct!

The Gist:

Terius Behind Me is about the lives of two very different people - Kim Bon and Go Ae Rin.

Kim Bon is a former NIS agent who is being chased by the government due to treason charges. He has been in hiding trying to find out what went wrong in his last mission.

Go Ae Rin, on the other hand, is a housewife and a mother of 6 year-old twins.

The two are neighbors at Kingcastle Apartment. Their lives got intertwined upon finding out that Go Ae Rin's huband was murdered.

Their adventure begins when they unravel the truth behind the death of her husband and the conspiracy behind it with the help of the KIS members.

What I liked about the series:

- First of all, SO JI SUB! 💕😋😍

- Second of all, SO JI SUB as an UNCLE/DAD! ❤️😘😍

- Third, SO JI SUB as an ACTION STAR! 💯💋😍

- Fourth, SO JI SUB as a FORTUNE TELLER! 😜🤣😍 (Sooooo cute! ❤️)

Okay. So, enough about So Ji Sub being his beautiful self. Hahaha! Here's what I liked about the series:

- I really liked the action-comedy theme of the series. The balance between the action scenes and the comedic rebuttals are so good that you know you're in for a visual treat. ❤️

- Speaking of visual treats, So Ji Sub in a suit, in sweatshirts, and in sneakers, is perfection in all angles. Hahahahaha! 😍😜😊 (Can't help it. Hahahaha! Sorry! 🤣)

- Jung In-sun's acting is 💯. You'll definitely laugh and cry with her through out the series. Her character's so strongggg especially when it comes to her kids. Super nakaka-bilib!

I actually watched her in Waikiki Beach (though I haven't finished it yet). I wasn't that impressed in her performance on the first few episodes. (Sorry. ✌🏻)

But here, her acting skills shined! Gujab! 😊

- I love how they did not force the romance. You just know it's there... ❤️💕💯

It's like when you want something but you have to wait for the right time to make it yours... SWAK!

- NOSE KISS 💕❤️💋

- As a self-proclaimed member of ARMY, I love how they used snippets of BTS' songs in the series. Hihi! Not sure if that was intentional, but, my fangirl heart skipped a beat hearing my bb's songs. ❤️😊🤣

- Okay, another friendship appreciation post: I love how the people at Kingcastle take care of their own. I mean, they are not just acquaintances - they are family. They make you want to live with them as neighbors. 💕

Plus, they have superb investigative skills. Hahahaha! #KIS 👌🏻💯

- Most of the series' funny moments happen with Joon-joon and KIS members. The punch lines are hilarious! 😂

- I ship the second leads. Ra Do Woo is one to watch out. Super cuteeeee. 😍 I love how he expresses his feelings towards Yoo Ji Yeon in a somewhat aggressive but conservative way. Hahaha! 🍁

Cons:

- My hunch was right. Hahaha! It's a habit of mine to anticipate who the villains are in a series. I hate it when I get it right. Hahaha! I know, it's weird.

Is it just me? Hahahaha! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤣

- If you watched Descendants of the Sun, you'd probably know Daniel (Jasper Cho). I did not like his make-up here. It's a little off. I mean, eyeliner? 🙅🏻‍♀️

One Day - Kim Min Seung

The series in general is light/funny/and cute - until the last few episodes where the action/drama gets really intense.

I actually am rooting for a second season. Hahaha! That last mission in the final episode is a subtle cliffhanger. Hahaha! Though, no pressure. Hahaha! I still like the drama as it is. ❤️

It Section One

Chapters 1-3 (Part One)

1. How did the terror begin? The terror began when Bill's younger brother George went out in the rain to play with a boat Bill had made for him. George ended up losing the boat down a drain and when he went to look for it, he met Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Pennywise offered to give George his boat back but instead, he grabbed George's left arm, RIPPED IT OUT OF THE SOCKET and killed George. So the terror began with a boat made of newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain and with the death of Bill's younger brother George.

2. What did Unwin and Hagarty see during Adrian's assult? They both saw Pennywise. Hagarty says that Pennywise was there when he was calling for help. Pennywise was the one yelling for them to throw Adrian over and the other boys obliged. Then Hagarty ran down the ravine to pull Adrian out of the water. Unwin says he saw the clown drag Adrian out of the river with one hand, balloons clutched in the other. Then he picked up Adrian and bit his armpit?? Then he was pulled away by one of the other guys. Hagarty was down there by the water and says that the clown picked up Adrian, who was still alive at this point, and squeezed him, crushing his bones and then he smiled through his armpit? Though all of the injuries Adrian sustained were actually consistent with this account. There was a chunk missing from his armpit and he had broken ribs. But the cops thought these two were crazy and convicted the three who threw Adrian off the bridge for his murder since one of them had a knife and Adrian was stabbed multiple times.

3. What are the three nevers that occurred to Patty Uris and what does she discover happened to Stanley? As Patty is standing outside the locked bathroom door where Stanley went to take a bath after received a strange phone call, these three nevers occurred to her: Stanley never took a bath in the early evening, Stanley never closed the door unless he was using the toilet, and Stanley had never locked the door against her at all. When she finally manages to get in the bathroom, she discovers that he's committed suicide. He slit his arms from wrist to inner elbow and slashed them across. Then, using his blood, he wrote one word on the bathroom tiles above the tub just before he lost consciousness: IT

4. Why does Richie tell his boss he has to go back to back to Derry? He says that someone called him. Someone that he used to know a long time ago, back when he lived in another place. He says that something happened back then and he made a promise. He says they all did. They promised that they would go back if the something started happening again. And he guesses that it has started again. But he won't tell his boss what the something is and why he has to go. And that's because Richie honestly doesn't remember. But he says that the something happened in the summer of 1958 when he was eleven going on twelve.

5. What does Ben say he's forgotten? What does he remember? Ben says he's forgotten everything about being a kid. He says he didn't remember Mike until Mike called and he only remembered Derry because that's where Mike was calling from. But other than that, he'd forgotten everything. And he didn't think that was unusual because he was a kid when he knew Mike and when he lived in Derry and kids forget things, right? But what scared him was that he'd forgotten it all. Because he hadn't even thought about his childhood since he didn't know when. But he remembers being fat and poor. He remembers a kid named Henry Bowers carving the letter H into his stomach. And he remembers giving his fourth silver dollar to Stuttering Bill and either Bill or a girl named Beverly saved his life with that silver dollar.

6. What does Eddie dream about Patrick Hockstetter? He dreams that he's eleven years old and he smelled something like death. Someone lit a match and he looked down and saw the decomposing face of Patrick Hockstetter. Patrick disappeared in July of 1958 and there were worms crawling out of his cheeks and the awful smell was coming from inside Patrick. And to one side of him there were two schoolbooks that were fat with moisture and overgrown with mold: Roads to Everywhere and Understanding Our America. And that was when Eddie opened his mouth to scream but fingers went around his cheek and into his mouth and that was when he woke up. But he also says that it was more a memory than it was a dream...

7. What affect does Mike Hanlon's call have on Beverly? It makes her stronger. Her husband has been beating her since before their marriage and she finally stands up to him. It turns out the same thing happened with her father and she escaped her father's beatings only to wind up with someone just like him (that seems to be a theme here). But instead of just taking it this time, she fights back and escapes. So Beverly grabs her packed suitcase and gets out of the house for what feels like it will be the last time. And then she heads back to Derry.

8. After Bill talks to Mike Hanlon, what comes back? What does he remember about the summer of 1958 and the promise made? Two things: Bill's stutter and two white scars on his palms. He shows these to his wife and they both swear the scars were not there before. She vividly remembers a palm reading at a party when they first met and she didn't notice the scars then. And Bill says he was arm wrestling or something the night before and he didn't see them then. He says he thinks they returned when Mike called, since A LOT OF STUFF returned when Mike called, including his memories of his brother, all of his friends and just Derry in general. Bill also remembers how he got the scars. He said Stan is the one who cut all of their hands. He cut a small scar in each of their palms with a piece of glass and then they all held hands in a circle like blood brothers. And they promised, swore, if it wasn't over and it started happening again, they would all come back. And stop it again. Forever.

  Section One Reading Journal

Okay so. I have been wanting to read this book foreverrrr. But it’s such a long read and Stephen King seems to be such a hit or miss with me. But I always tend to read things better with book club so that’s why I chose it. But, that being said, I am a huge fan of the 1990 mini-series so I’m hoping that means I’ll like the book? I haven’t seen the 2017 movie yet because I was hoping to read the book first (hahahaha) but since we’re reading it now, that means I’ll probably be able to watch that one and the second half super soon!!!

Anyway, I am quite enjoying this book so far! I’m not loving the non-linear timeline though (especially since I am number dyslexic and am having sERIOUS TROUBLE keeping 1958 and 1985 straight. THANKS FOR THAT STEPHEN KING). I kind of like that the movies are fixing that??? But also, why does SK always write that like??? I swear none of his books ever have a linear timeline. Looking at you, Dark Tower series.

I kind of wish this section hadn’t entirely been with the adults and it would’ve gone into more of the background of them as kids. Though I guess that’s the entirety of the next part. But, still, we don’t really have a basis for who they are yet so we can’t really see how they’ve changed from when they’re kids. I did enjoy this section though. But chapter two felt wildly irrelevant??? Like that was just filler to show you that other people do, in fact, see Pennywise. And I guess that’s also why Mike ends up calling everyone to bring them back. But still, the mini-series pretty much glossed over the details of the actual event and I honestly support that choice. (Though Adrian and company are in the cast for the 2019 film so I’m guessing that’s going to be in the new movie?)

Oh and side note. I love the William Goldman reference in this section XDDD Especially since we definitely have a history with Goldman and so does SK. I’m guessing this book was written right around the time Misery was adapted into a film (I could actually look it up but ~lazy) and SK was very pleased, ahahaha.

Anyway, so far I’m liking this book but I’m already side-eyeing the 1000 pages. Knowing SK’s writing, there’s a bunch of stuff that doesn’t need to be in this book. I think this was a nice setup but I guess we’ll see how the rest of this goes. Because wow that was literally a hundred page intro to all of the relevant characters. Okay. Now let’s see the rest of the book....
