Mab’s Drawlloween Day 12: Toad

My favourite toad is the Fowler’s toad (Anaxyrus fowleri), a little poisonous toad native to eastern North America. According to field guides and conservationists it’s not supposed to be in Ontario past Lake Erie, but I see it all the time in the Ottawa Valley. A lot of critters (and plants and fungi) are moving up here due to climate change and habitat encroachment.

I don’t just love toads because they’re poisonous, I love them because they are perfect. They haven’t needed to evolve in millions of years. They are “sit and wait” hunters, similar to spiders that are ambush predators. They just chill in the dirt and dead leaves and wait for food to come to them. Their whole life is “just bugs”. The creators of “work smarter, not harder”. They have a lot to teach us about patience, strategy, playing dumb, and doing well despite being lazy. Role model material, honestly.

Yesterday I picked Beaver up (gloved) to look at her size and her legs. Her nubs have become more of points? She walks, hops, and digs with her nubs, but probably not as well as she could if she had them, of course. She's gotten a little bigger since I first got her, but certainly fatter. I can't wait to upgrade and give her more hides, but she seems to like the piece of wood in the back SO much, and made a tunnel under it.

there were so many north american species (even ones local to the area)!! here are some of my favorites :)

#bison; bald eagle (juvenile); whooping crane; turkeys (and reiss geese); cedar waxwing; rose breasted grossbeak; oystercatcher; #blackfooted ferret; and fowlers toads! #everything but the bison ferret crane and geese are native to this area too (mid atlantic coast) :) #lots of birds. ebeghf. i really wanted to check out the new bird house today it just opened in march. and i DID! #sasha speaks #nablah #frogs
