CONTENT WARNING: This story contains graphic details about residential “schools” that many will find distressing or triggering. Please look after your spirit and read with care.
After confirming the deaths of 158 Indigenous children at four government and church-run institutions in the “Fraser Valley,” researchers with Stó:lō Nation say they want to find the individuals who were responsible.
Following a two-year investigation, questions still remain about how many more children lost their lives while in forced custody — and about the adults responsible for their care — at the former St. Mary’s Indian Residential School, Coqualeetza Industrial Institute, All Hallows School or Coqualeetza Indian Hospital.
However, the team from Stó:lō says both Oblates of Mary Immaculate and “Canada” have blocked access to records which could help their efforts to identify what actions, or inactions, led to children’s deaths and who perpetrated the horrific abuses detailed by survivors.
“What we learned from speaking with only a handful of survivors is devastatingly traumatic and sad,” said David Schaepe, an archaeologist for Stó:lō who is leading the research project, on Thursday.
“Who perpetrated these atrocities? This is one of our core questions and remains a focus of our ongoing work.” [...]

On Sunday I had a booth at @aacd_events where we were blessed with some sunshine, stories, dancing, bannock and a plethora of amazing Indigenous vendors sharing their work. I've attending this event for years, but it was my first time as a vendor here sharing and selling my art. I had the opportunity to connect with old and new friends and find some time to do a little shopping of my own! Beaded Pompom earrings by @kung_creations

"FIRING FROM AMBUSH DESPERADO MURDERS TWO MEN AND WOMAN," Vancouver Sun. October 15, 1912. Page 4. ---- Family Ill-Feeling Results in William McLaughlin Slaying His Indian Wife's Parents and Their Friend. ---- MRS. MCLAUGHLIN WAS EYE-WITNESS OF DEED ---- Police Form Cordon Around Assassin, Whose Capture Is Expected Soon. ---- With a posse of provincial police hot upon his trail, William McLaughlin, of Nicomen, Fraser valley, is fleeing into the mountains to escape a charge of having murdered William Jasper and his wife, both Indians, and a white man named "Scotty" McNeill. The two Indians are the parents of McLaughlin's wife.
Late on Sunday afternoon Mrs. McLoughlin drove into Deroche with the dead bodies of the three victims of the murder. Terror stricken and hysterical, she related particulars of the affair to Provincial Constable Lister.
Fired From Ambush. According to her story there had for some time been ill feeling between the alleged murderer and her parents. As the Jaspers, McNeill and herself were driving into Deroche at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon McLaughlin opened fire upon them with a rifle from an ambush at the roadside.
First Jasper and his wife fell victims to the bullets of the assassin. Snatching a rifle from the wagon box McNeill fired at McLaughlin, slightly wounding him. The murderer then turned his gun upon McNeill and the latter fell back in the wagon, mortally wounded. All this time the girl had lain cowering in the wagon box, almost wild with terror.
Police on Trail. McLaughlin is then said to have made off into the bush without attempting to interfere with his wife. As soon as she had sufficiently recovered from her fright she headed the team to Deroche, where she communicated her story to the police.
The provincial police immediately set out on the trail of the alleged murderer and succeeded in tracing him to his home on Nicomen Island, where they discovered that he had replenished his stock of ammunition, and had then made toward the hills.
The whole countryside have been warned, and an anxious lookout is being kept for McLaughlin. Besides the police in the district where the tragedy took place, Constables Taylor and Gammon of Vancouver and New Westminster have been dispatched to the scene, and with reinforcements from Deroche, Mission City and Nicomen, an attempt will be made to cut off all avenues of escape, and capture the alleged murderer.

Bus drivers in B.C.’s Fraser Valley have issued 72-hour strike notice and could start job action as early as Thursday.
CUPE Local 561 said Monday it had issued notice to First Transit, the BC Transit contractor that operates buses in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and the surrounding region.
“People see BC Transit on the side of our busses and think our members are getting the same wages as other BC Transit workers — we are not,” CUPE 561 president Jane Gibbons said in a media release.
“Our members make significantly less than transit workers across the Lower Mainland, with no pension plan and long hours of standby time for which they receive less than $3 per hour.”
The union said the American-based contractor operates both conventional transit buses and HandyDART service in the Fraser Valley.
The two sides have been bargaining since spring 2022, with wages a key sticking point. The union argues its members earn 32 per cent less than other Lower Mainland transit workers. [...]

Peace: How I Know These Two Places Both Offer Peace
Places That Offer Peace: Peace of mind can certainly be felt when walking along a mostly secluded beach, looking at the expanse of the ocean. I also find a sense of tranquility when in a place surrounded by mountains. I write this regarding the daily prompt: Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why? A Walk Along The Beach: Walking along the beach and just listening to the waves as they…

I was commissioned by the @abbotsfordartscouncil to paint the 2022 Arty Awards. There are a total of nine trophies and when they're all lined up they form a salmon. They were then engraved with all of the winner's details on another side.
