Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster in Sweet Smell of Success (Alexander Mackendrick, 1957)
Cast: Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner, Jeff Donnell, Sam Levene, Joe Frisco, Barbara Nichols, Emile Meyer, Edith Atwater. Screenplay: Clifford Odets, Ernest Lehman, based on a novel by Lehman. Cinematography: James Wong Howe. Art direction: Edward Carrere. Film editing: Alan Crosland Jr. Music: Elmer Bernstein.
What do Sweet Smell of Success, His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks, 1940), Sullivan's Travels (Preston Sturges, 1941), and The Searchers (John Ford, 1956) have in common? They are all among the critically acclaimed films that, among other honors, have been selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. And none of them received a single nomination in any category for the Academy Awards. Sweet Smell is, of course, a wickedly cynical film about two of the most egregious anti-heroes, New York newspaper columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) and press agent Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis), ever to appear in a film. They make the gangsters of Francis Ford Coppola's and Martin Scorsese's films look like Boy Scouts. So given the inclination of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to stay on the good side of columnists and publicists, we might expect it to shy away from honoring the film with Oscars. But consider the categories in which it might have been nominated. The best picture Oscar for 1957 went to The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean), a respectable choice, and Sidney Lumet's tensely entertaining 12 Angry Men certainly deserved the nomination it received. But in what ways are the other nominees -- Peyton Place (Mark Robson), Sayonara (Joshua Logan), and Witness for the Prosecution (Billy Wilder) -- superior to Sweet Smell?  The best actor Oscar winner was Alec Guinness for The Bridge on the River Kwai, another plausible choice. But Tony Curtis gave the performance of his career as Sidney Falco, overcoming his "pretty boy" image -- in fact, the film makes fun of it: One character refers to him as "Eyelashes" -- by digging deep into his roots growing up in The Bronx. Burt Lancaster would win an Oscar three years later for Elmer Gantry (Richard Brooks), a more showy but less controlled performance than the one he gives here. Either or both of them would have been better nominees than Marlon Brando was for his lazy turn in Sayonara, Anthony Franciosa in A Hatful of Rain (Fred Zinnemann), Charles Laughton in Witness for the Prosecution, and Anthony Quinn in Wild Is the Wind (George Cukor). The dialogue provided by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman for the film crackles and stings -- there is probably no more quotable, or stolen from, screenplay, yet it went unnominated. So did James Wong Howe's eloquent black-and-white cinematography, showing off the neon-lighted Broadway in a sinister fashion, and Elmer Bernstein's atmospheric score mixed well with the jazz sequences featuring the Chico Hamilton Quintet. Even the performers in the film who probably didn't merit nominations make solid contributions: Martin Milner is miscast as the jazz musician who falls for Hunsecker's sister (Susan Harrison), but he hasn't yet fallen into the blandness of his famous TV roles on Route 66 and Adam-12, and Barbara Nichols, who had a long career playing floozies in movies and on TV, is surprisingly touching as Rita, one of the pawns Sidney uses to get ahead. As a director, Alexander Mackendrick is best known for the comedies he did at Britain's Ealing Studios with Alec Guinness, The Man in the White Suit (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955). His work on Sweet Smell was complicated by clashes with Lancaster, who was one of the film's executive producers, and after making a few more films he accepted a position at the film school at the California Institute of the Arts in 1967, where he spent the rest of his career.

A Smash Bros retelling of A Christmas Carol, or very specifically A Muppet Christmas Carol.
Luigi is Bob Cratchit/Kermit and Daisy is Emily Cratchit/Miss Piggy, with Lucas as Tiny Tim/Robin and the Ice Climbers and Toon Link as the other kids.
Wario and Waluigi are Jacob and Robert Marley, the only easy choice made in this entire list.
Kinda split on if Banjo-Kazooie serve as the Greek Chorus (Banjo is Charles Dickins/Gonzo and Kazooie is Rizzo) or if Banjo is Fozziwig at a Rubber Kazooie factory. If Banjo isn’t Fozziwig then it could be Tom Nook (not a smasher, but it’d be cute to see Animal Crossing characters in the flashback), and if Banjo and Kazooie aren’t the Greek Chorus then Falco could be Gonzo and Pichu could be Rizzo. Honestly Banjo and Kazooie’s dynamic dynamic is too good to pass up on tbh.
For the ghosts, if we’re going Muppet portrayals I think either Zelda or Sothis could be Ghost of Christmas Past, but Palutena or Rosalina could work for other interpretations. Mewtwo is a pretty good serious choice for Future, but for a comedic choice I’d say either Meta Knight or Sans (or Shulk, with his future vision and stuff). King Dedede is the Ghost of Christmas Present, I will not budge on this.
For minor roles, Pichu or Jigglypuff could work as Bean Bunny, and the Toads would be good fellow bookkeepers. A more humanoid female smasher could serve as Belle (Peach? Byleth? Corrin? idk she’s kind of a blank slate). Captain Falcon could be Sam the Eagle just for pun’s sake.
Micheal Kane is still there. If we can’t afford him then Ganondorf works. With this in mind, Link and Zelda could be Fred and his wife. It could also be Shulk and a different female smasher since, from my memory, Scrooge and Fred are among the only characters with British accents due to the Muppet cast.

Hogwarts Mystery Playlist 1980's Edition
If you could choose a theme song for each friend in Hogwarts what would you choose? For my part, I'm sticking with the 1980's and only one song per artist. There are so many possibilities and artists I've left out, but there are only so many spots available. What follows pulls heavily from New Wave, Pop, and Rock.
MC: "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister (1984). As leader of the rebel group, he/she needed an equally rebellious song. Rowan: "Call Me" by Blondie (1980). So many songs by Blondie had to be discarded as they were released in the 70's, but this definitely fits MC's oldest and perhaps most loyal friend. Merula: "Bad" by Michael Jackson (1987). There are many points I could have used one of Michael songs in this list, but this one fits her to a "t." Ben: "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley (1987). This song has gone through a period where its appearance was a jock on the internet, kind of like how many view Ben. Like this song still being great, Ben is still a great character and loyal friend to MC even if he can be annoying at time. Penny: "The Loco-Motion" by Kylie Minogue (1987). A bubbly song for a bubbly character. Hagrid: "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler (1984). An epic song for an epic character. Chiara: "Angel of the Morning" by Juice Newton (1981). A sweet song for a sweet character Skye: "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive (1984). A bit wild like Skye. McNully: "Whip It" by DEVO (1981). Intense and to the point. Orion: "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me by Culture Club (1982). Mellow, smooth, and emotional. Bill: "Down Under" by Men at Work (1980). Adventurous. Rath: "Into the Groove" by Madonna (1985). I strongly considered "Beat It," but I can see Erika as a secret Madonna fan especially as this song can also apply to Quidditch. Tonks: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper (1983). The easiest song to place. Tulip: "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol (1983). "Rain hell from above" is so fitting. Barnaby: "Love Shack" by The B-52's (1989). Unfortunately "Rock Lobster" was released in the 70's, but this one is just fun and loveable. Ismelda: "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett (1981). Almost any song by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts would work for her. Talbott: "Rock me Amadeus" by Falco (1985). Classic, informative, and different. Andre: "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top (1983). Unfortunately, "Vogue" was a 90's song, but this one fits just nicely. Charlie: "Africa" by Toto (1982). Evocative of wild life preserves and the chorus could easily apply to Charlie's dragon obsession. Jae: "Stray Cat Strut" by Stray Cats (1981). Confident, lazy, and not abiding by the rules. Badeea: "The Look" by Roxette (1981). Innovative and upbeat. Liz: "When Doves Cry" by Prince (1984). Soulful and a bit awkward. Diego: "Lambada" by Kaoma (1989). Even though it's Brazilian Portuguese, no character best fits the exotic "forbidden dance." Fred: "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the Bangles (1986). Fun, adventurous, and deviant. George: "The Safety Dance" by Man Without Hats (1983). Almost an ironic title, but a fun song. Cedric: "Every Breath You Take" by The Police (1983). Very mainstream and seems to a great fit with how much he idolizes MC. Alanza: "Funkytown" by Lips, Inc (1980). This song barely makes the cut, but it's fun and bouncy like this new character. Beatrice: "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell (1981). Confrontational and standoffish after past transgressions.
