On February 29th, 1720, Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden abdicated the throne in favour of her husband, Frederick I.
She had succeeded her brother, Charles XII, upon his death as he'd never married or fathered any children. She would be the 3rd Queen Regnant in Swedish history, the two previous ones being Margaret I and Christina.
Ulrika Eleonora had wanted to have her husband as a co-monarch, like Mary II and William III had ruled together in England, but the Swedish Parliament refused. They did however, agree to accept him as sole monarch if she abdicated, which she did on the condition that she would be heir to the throne and become Queen Regnant again should her husband die before she did.

Friedrich I (r. 1688 - 1713)
First King in Prussia
Much to our eternal chagrin, it was through dealings with Austria that our kingdom came to be. Tensions rose between Habsburgs and Bourbons again, this time over the issue of the successor to the Spanish throne. After much hemming and hawing, Friedrich decided to back the Habsburgs with a contingent of troops. In return for this most generous of favors, the Habsburgs finally acknowledging our king's rightful title over Prussia. As it had always been; never you mind what certain Polish authorities say!
Fittingly for Prussia's first king, Friedrich through the coronation of a lifetime in Königsberg. While the festivities aren't worth remarking upon - if you've seen one coronation, you've seen them all - the economic toll was staggering. A special tax was levied to pay for the ceremony and it only brought in a meagre 500,000 thalers. Friedrich designed every moment and detail of the ceremony, befitting a king of his frivolous talents. It was choked full of symbolism, such as crowning himself in a separate ceremony that snubbed the Estates. This flair for the dramatic continued throughout his reign, though lacking much of the follow through of his two predecessors.
Curiously, he was by all accounts a good father to his son, Friedrich Wilhelm I. Hoping to avoid the pitfalls of his own happy and uncertain childhood, Friedrich provided his son with a full education and a quasi-independent existence. This warm relationship extended even to the later years of the father's life, where they served as co-regents due to Friedrich's diminishing capacities. It leads one to wonder where Friedrich Wilhelm developed his barbaric notions on childrearing, but I am not one to speculate. (Note: Since when? -L)
Friedrich Wilhelm II (r. 1786 - 1797)
Friedrich Wilhelm's lack of interest and education in governing made him reliant on a coterie of ministers and advisors. The most significant of these, Johann Christoph Wöllner, dedicated himself to cultural policies that aimed to eliminate skepticism's corrupting influences on public life and uphold Christian doctrine. A bevy of laws were passed aimed at censorship and school curriculums. Our modern readership should feel assured that those sorts of things are now relegated to the past. (Note: Maintain the fourth wall! -L)
While dear Friedrich der Grosse deserves the credit for the first partition, it was Friedrich Wilhelm who finished the work of his predecessor. It was through his cunning - and Catherine the Great's generosity - that we received many fine cities, the best of all being Danzig. His brilliance, or that of a fine minister, also led us into a closer embrace with our dearly beloathed Austria. It was this treaty that fertilized the garden of our love - and our mutual hatred of France.
He had complicated personal relations. His marriage to his first wife ended after mutual infidelity. Then, he’s reluctantly married to a second and has three mistresses we know about. Not only that, but two of them became morganatic - all while still married to that second wife!

Barbarossa's awakening by Hermann Wislicenus
“Legend says he is not dead, but asleep with his knights in a cave in the Kyffhäuser mountain in Thuringia, and that when the ravens cease to fly around the mountain he will awake and restore Germany to its ancient greatness. According to the story, his red beard has grown through the table at which he sits. His eyes are half closed in sleep, but now and then he raises his hand and sends a boy out to see if the ravens have stopped flying.”

1190-Frederick Barbarossa
Tumblr media
Frederick Barbarossa (December 1122 – 10 June 1190), also known as Frederick I (German: Friedrich I, Italian: Federico I), was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 until his death 35 years later. He was elected King of Germany in Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and crowned in Aachen on 9 March 1152. He was crowned King of Italy on 24 April 1155 in Pavia and emperor by Pope Adrian IV on 18 June 1155 in Rome.
Tumblr media
Frederick joined the Third Crusade and opted to travel overland to the Holy Land. In 1190, Frederick drowned attempting to cross the Saleph river, leading to most of his army abandoning the Crusade before reaching Acre.

the "diagnosis" Chilton gave Will during his trial was the one closest to the truth ("Will Graham has never been diagnosed. He won't allow anyone to test him. He has carefully constructed a persona to hide his real nature from the world. He wears it so well, even Jack Crawford couldn't see past it. (...) There is not yet a name for whatever Will Graham is.")
unlike Alana Bloom or Jack Crawford, he saw what a manipulator Will was and that in front of them he played a poor, confused, wounded bird ("(...) A particularly-manipulative one at that. Poor, confused, wounded bird for Agent Crawford and Doctors Lecter and Bloom. And for me, well, I get the psychopath's triumvirate: charm, focus and ruthlessness. The charm, of course, being debateable.")
he believed Will that Hannibal may be the Chesapeake Ripper and said Jack Crawford: "Hannibal once served me tongue and made a joke about eating mine. It's hard not to at least consider it.". Jack ignored him. (I think Jack was already planning some large-scale action against Hannibal, but that's a topic for another post)
he called Dr Lecter "Hannibal the Cannibal"
he understood that Will Graham was alive because Hannibal Lecter liked him that way
criticized Jack for letting Will and Hannibal get closer to each other and then leaving Will alone ("You dangle Will Graham and now you cut bait. You are letting Hannibal have him hook, line and sinker.")
when Jack expressed hope that the relationship between Hannibal and Will was one of those friendships that ends after the disemboweling, Chilton told him: "I would argue, with these two, that's tantamount to flirtation. Will is going to lead you right to him." and let's be real, he was right.

i have a thought about pjo that i can't quite articulate but it goes along the lines of:
athena gave annabeth as a gift to frederick because she liked his search for knowledge. in athena's eyes, any action of annabeth's reflects herself, which is why annabeth 'embarrassing' her had such strong consequences
poseidon fell in love with impertinent, stubborn sally jackson. percy wasn't a gift to her - he is a cumulation of all of her stubborn, steadfast love.
why wouldn't poseidon still love and aid percy when all of percy's insolence is why he loved sally in the first place?

oh OOOOOOH their deaths mirror each other. Tamerlane and Leo are both driven to what looks like suicide chasing hallucinations around an apartment that architecturally represents their psyche (as they destroy it), shortly after leaving/planning to leave their loving partner. (Both of them invite her in, at first. Both of them want her there. But now she's in the mirrors. She's in the walls.)
Vic and Camille are both killed/driven to death by Vic's experiments, their rivalry leading to both their deaths (Camille to prove it doesn't work, Vic to prove it does), immediately after they get left by people they are using in professional/personal ways - Camille hires Toby and Tina to sleep with them, Vic dates Ali to get her to work with her on the heart mesh.
Perry and Frederick both die in the same warehouse, looking at the ceiling, waiting for death to come to them - Perry with a look of ecstasy, Frederick in terror. Both of them are in that warehouse because they've been humiliated by Roderick and are now determined to prove themselves. Both get led here by drugs. Both involve the mutilation of an innocent, Morrie. Both of them see Verna not as another character, but something like her true self. And there's the parallel between all the mercy that Verna offers Perry - the most she offers any of them, other than Lenore - and her glee in explaining to Roderick exactly why he deserves to die like this.
And then you get the final pairing/quartet of deaths - Eliza Usher + William Longfellow vs Madeline and Roderick which is obvious but oh my god. oh my god you guys. Eliza's wall of crucifixes and clinging to Christian faith and the sanctity of pain as a way of hoping for reward after death vs Roderick putting Madeline through the agony of vivisection to 'honour' her + grant her Egyptian immortality. Both William and Roderick eat their young. Fuck.

The Royal Order of the Seraphim was a Swedish order of chivalry created by Frederick I on February 23rd, 1748. This outfit, including the cape, dress, shoes, hat, and insignia, was worn by the then 2 year old Prince Gustav, the future Gustav III.
(Definitely go to the linked source below and look at the closeup shots, it's amazing!)
