I don't think I'll ever be able to get over the fact that in Dive to the Future episode 1, Rin and Haru imagined that the other was swimming in the lane next to them.
They're in totally different countries.

Free! Coffee Shots #1-9
A collection of the Free! sentence starters I’ve done, compiled for the sake of ease. These are all stand-alone stories.
~~~
1) Lee Rei, Lers Nagisa and Makoto
“Rei, you’re worrying too much—”
“No! I have to get the form perfect or it won’t be beautiful at all!” Rei sucked in a deep breath, letting it out slowly, concentrating. “One more time.”
Makoto glanced at Haru and Nagisa, exchanging shrugs with them as their newest member dove into the water for the fifth time in a row, trying to perfect his form within just a few days of finally being able to swim without sinking. The brunette watched him worryingly. Rei’s form wasn’t the best, sure, but he was still brand new. He couldn’t expect perfection right away, even if he was…well, Rei.
The newcomer completed his swim and climbed out of the water, shaking stray drops from his eyes. “How was that?”
“Better!” Nagisa encouraged enthusiastically, jumping over to him, placing himself between Rei and the pool. “You’re doing great, Rei!”
“But is there room for improvement? Surely there must be.” Rei turned to Makoto. “Captain?”
Makoto sighed. “You’ve got to be patient. You won’t be perfect right away, you know. And Nagisa’s right – you’re improving every time.”
Rei frowned. “But there’s still more work to be done.”
“There’s always more work to be done,” Makoto replied evenly.
Nagisa glanced up at his friend, saw his disappointed features, and hugged him from behind, startling the taller boy. “Don’t worry, Rei. You’ll be swimming like a pro before you know it! Just don’t push yourself, okay?”
Rei remembered their training camp and let out a resigned sigh. “I won’t.”
“Cheer up!” Nagisa grinned, turning playful in an instant. He scribbled lightly over Rei’s sides. “You’re no fun when you’re grumpy.”
“Ah! I’m n-nohohohohot grumpy! Nagisahahaha!” Rei giggled, his frown instantly replaced with a bright smile. He squirmed in place, trying to wriggle away from his smaller friend’s grasp. “S-Stohohohop! Hey!”
Makoto soon found he was smiling as well, and before he knew it he’d joined Nagisa’s efforts, raking his nails across Rei’s ribs. Rei squealed and arched his back, nearly losing his footing due to the slippery surface surrounding the pool. He pushed at the both of them while still giggling steadily, pink tinging his cheeks.
“Hehehehehey! Bohohohohoth of you, stohohohohop this instahahahant! This is unprohohohofessional!”
“Pfft, you think we care about being professional here?” Nagisa laughed, tickling harder. “We’re just having fun! Lighten up!”
Makoto nodded. “He’s right. We’re just helping you relax a little after practicing so hard today!”
Rei felt himself blushing as he cackled and squirmed and tried his best to escape their tickly clutches. The surprises just kept coming in the Iwatobi Swim Club.
*
2) Lee Haru, Ler Sousuke
“I’ve never heard you laugh before.”
Haru gave Sousuke a withering look. “I wonder why.”
“You do have a sense of humor, don’t you? You’re friends with Rin and all.”
“You realize this conversation is weird, right?” Haru frowned. “You don’t even like me. Why are you suddenly interested in whether I laugh or not?”
Sousuke quirked a brow. “Are you saying you don’t laugh? Ever?”
“Quit putting words in my mouth.”
The taller man appraised him for a moment, then poked his side experimentally. When Haru jerked away, Sousuke had his answer. He smirked. “So you do laugh.”
“No I don’t,” Haru shot back, instantly regretting his words when a spark of interest glinted in Sousuke’s eyes. “I mean – I do! But not…not when I’m…”
“You don’t laugh when you’re tickled? What do you do, then?” The dark-eyed man grabbed his waist and squeezed, fully curious now.
Haru jerked again and let out a breathy giggle, twisting and shoving at Sousuke’s shoulders. “Stohohop it! This is weheheheird!”
Sousuke winced instinctively, but he was too intrigued to stop now. “You don’t laugh? Seriously? What if I find a bad spot?”
“No! You wohohohon’t!” Haru protested, smiling wide despite himself. “I dohohohon’t lahahaugh! Ask anyohohohone!”
“Rin?”
“Yes! Rihihihihin! Ask hihihihihim! Let me go alreadyehehehe!”
Sousuke hummed, gradually letting up with a shrug. “Sure. I’ll ask him. But you know if he tells me you do actually laugh, I’m going to come back and finish this later.”
Haru shot to his feet, glaring as he backed away and then turned to leave. “You don’t even like me.”
Sousuke rolled his eyes. “Yeah, well…you tend to grow on people, don’t you, Haru?”
Haru didn’t reply, but the words made him feel slightly better about what had just happened.
*
3) Lee Rin, Ler Sousuke
“You don’t need to act so tough around me,” Sousuke reminded Rin, nudging him. “What’s really going on?”
“Wha-huh?” Rin stammered, surprised. “I’m not acting tough. I’m serious.”
“Yeah, forgive me if I don’t believe you.” Sousuke eyed Rin carefully. He’d honestly be inclined to believe nothing was wrong if not for the obvious sad look in his friend’s gaze. If it was Haru again he swore he’d kill him. “Come on, man. What’s up?”
Rin crossed his arms and leaned back against the bench with an indignant huff. “Nothing. You’re reading too much into it. I’m fine.”
Sousuke sighed heavily. “Don’t make me pull it out of you, Rin.”
“Pull what? There’s nothing to – hey!” Rin was already giggling before his friend had even done anything, the presence of wiggling fingers approaching him enough to put him on edge. “D-Don’t – there’s nothing wrong!”
“I don’t believe you.” Sousuke smirked and tickled the redhead’s ribs gently, pleased with the high-pitched laughter he got for his efforts. Rin squirmed and pushed at him, but Sousuke was nothing if not immovable. He merely kept it up and tickled harder every time Rin tried to jump out of his seat, and eventually his friend gave up trying to fight.
“Okay, okahahahahahay! I’ll tehehehehehell you!” Rin laughed, punching Sousuke’s chest. “Stohohohohohop!”
“All right, but I’m still holding onto you for insurance in case you try lying again.” The taller man chuckled at the deer-in-the-headlights look Rin gave him. “Spill it.”
“It’s just…I’m kind of…” Rin mumbled, trying to find the right words. It was difficult to focus with Sousuke’s fingers still on his ribcage. “Ugh, you’re going to think it’s stupid.”
Sousuke went back to tickling him. “Tell me.”
“Ah! Okahahahahahahay! All right, fihihihihihine, I yehehehehehelled at Nitori!”
“What?” Sousuke stopped, frowning. “Why?”
“It wasn’t his fault. He didn’t do anything. I was just in a bad mood and I snapped at him and now I feel like crap about it.” Rin sighed. “I know all I have to do is apologize, but…I’m kind of worried he won’t forgive me this time.”
Sousuke finally let him go, nudging him again. “Nitori’s a smart kid. I’m sure he knows you didn’t mean anything by it. Just go talk to him, Rin. Don’t beat yourself up over a simple misunderstanding.” He reached over and tweaked his side again, grinning when Rin yelped. “And quit pouting. It’s not like you.”
“Ack! Bahahahack off, you beast!” Rin giggled, finally getting to his feet for real this time. “I’m going to go and apologize right now. Thanks for listening, you jerk.”
Sousuke waved at him as he went. “Anytime, man.”
*
4) Lee Makoto, Ler Rin
“I wouldn’t say that with the position you’re in.”
Rin smirked at Makoto, who stood with his hands over the sink in the restroom, blue paint all over his hands from a project he’d been doing with the kids he coached. Rin had stopped by for a visit just as he was finishing up, and immediately Makoto had begun joking about how the world must be ending for the legendary Rin Matsuoka to be visiting a lowly coach like him.
“Dude,” Makoto laughed, “just turn on the tap for me, would you? I don’t want to get paint on the handles.”
Rin shrugged. “I don’t know. Should I be helping a lowly coach like you wash his hands after fraternizing with the next generation of competitors? Hmm…”
Makoto smiled, rolled his eyes, and reached for the knob with his elbow instead. “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”
Rin darted over to him in an instant, grabbing onto his sides and squeezing. “Careful! You’ll get paint all over the wall! Or worse – on your uniform!”
“Stohohohohop! Rihihihihin!” Makoto laughed, using every ounce of willpower he had not to shove him away. With his hands covered like this, the only thing he could do was stand there and let his friend tickle him. “Plehehehehehease! I’ll get pahahahahahaint all over you!”
Rin gasped dramatically, grinning at him through the mirror. “You wouldn’t dare get the great Rin covered in blue paint, would you? What kind of example would you be setting for the kids?”
Makoto clenched his fists and glued his arms to his sides as much as possible, trying to protect himself as his old friend continued being playful with him. “Rihihihihihihihin! This isn’t fahahahahair! Plehehehehease!”
“Don’t whine. It’s not becoming of a coach.” Rin chuckled, but finally let him go as requested and turned on the tap for him. “There. Wash up, buttercup.”
Makoto shakily rinsed the paint from his hands, still giggling. “You jerk. You haven’t changed at all.”
“Were you hoping I would?”
“Not in the slightest.” The brunette smiled at him through the mirror. “We need a resident tickle monster around to keep us in line.”
*
5) Lee Rin, Ler Haru
“Next time you’ll think twice before you prank me,” Haru said calmly, sitting on Rin’s back, pinning his arms above his head.
Rin struggled, but it was pointless and he knew it. Haru was stronger than he looked, and when he was determined not to let someone get off easy, no amount of physical fighting would budge him. “All right, all right, you got me. I’m sorry about the mackerel thing. Can you let me up?”
Haru was silent for a moment. Then he poked a single finger into Rin’s ribs and wiggled.
“Gahk!” Rin squawked, jerking at the surprise sensation, biting his lip to keep from giggling immediately. “Haru! D-Don’t – hey!”
“You always tickle us when we try to mess around with you,” Haru said, stoic as ever. “I think it’s only fair that we do the same in return.”
“Nohoho!” Rin huffed out a snicker, squirming helplessly even before his old friend suddenly dug in with all five fingers. “AHAHAHAHAGH!! NOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!!”
“It was mean to get my hopes up like that. And after I haven’t seen you for months, too. You should know better than to tease me about something as serious as mackerel.”
“MAHAHAHACKEREL ISN’T SEHEHEHEHEHERIOUS!!” Rin protested.
Haru let go of his arms to drill all ten fingers into both sets of his friend’s ribs, pulling a loud screech of hysterical laughter out of him, followed by frantic kicking and flailing.
“OKAYOKAYOKAY I’M SOHOHOHOHOHOHORRY HARU!! I’M SOHOHOHOHORRY!!”
Rin couldn’t see it, of course, but Haru was smiling at him, enjoying pulling such pure, genuine laughter out of his friend that he hadn’t seen for what felt like forever. He kept up his relentless tickle torture, comfortably seated on the redhead’s back. “I’m sorry, too, Rin. Sorry that I’m having too much fun to stop now. I hope you didn’t have any other plans for today.”
“HAHAHAHAHAHARU!! PLEHEHEHEHEASE, I’M SORRY!! HAHAHAHAHAHARU…!!”
*
6) Lee Nagisa, Ler Haru
“I’ll tickle it out of you,” Haru said, calmly pushing Nagisa’s hands above his head before the words had a chance to register, tightening his grip when the blonde’s eyes widened and he began to squirm.
“W-Wait—”
“Tell me where it is.”
“I can’t, Haru—!”
Haru wasted no time. Thanks to it being close to swim practice, Nagisa was only in his swimsuit, leaving his exceedingly ticklish torso completely open for the taller boy’s fingers to scribble over, drawing bubbly, shrieky giggles out of him.
“Wahahahahait! Plehehehehease, I cahahahahahan’t tell you!”
“You’d better.”
“Ahahahahahahaha nohohohohohoho!” Nagisa squealed, blushing under the intense gaze of his friend but having a lot of fun at the same time. Luckily for him he loved being tickled, so he’d be able to hold out longer than anyone else would have if they’d been the ones to hide Haru’s swimsuit from him. Perhaps it seemed childish, but truly, it was the only way to keep the man from the water just long enough for Rei and Makoto to get back with their surprise.
“Tell me,” Haru demanded.
Nagisa shook his head. “Nehehehehehehever! You’ll nehehehehehever make me tahahahahalk!”
Haru quirked a brow and switched from light scribbling to digging right into his friend’s underarm – a spot he knew from experience was particularly sensitive.
Nagisa shrieked, knees wobbling as he struggled to remain on his feet, laughter exploding from his lungs. “NAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! NO FAHAHAHAHAHAHAIR, HARU!!”
“Where is it?”
“I WOHOHOHOHON’T TEHEHEHEHEHELL YOU!! R-REI AND MAHAHAKOTO—!!”
“Did they put you up to this?”
“WE AHAHAHAHAHALL DECIHIHIHIHIDED—!!”
“It was a mistake to keep me from the water.”
“PLEASE, HAHAHAHARU, LEHEHEHEHEHET ME EXPLAHAHAHAIN!!”
Haru couldn’t help but smile a little. As frustrated as he was about being kept from the pool thanks to his friend’s antics, it was truly enjoyable to make him laugh so hard. “All right, then.” He let go of Nagisa’s arms, scooped him up from behind, and tickled his ribs while his feet were dangling above the ground. “Let me hear it, Nagisa.”
The little blonde tossed his head back and squealed with giggles, determined to hold out until their friends got back.
Hopefully they wouldn’t be too much longer…
*
7) Lee Rin, Ler Sousuke
“Lot of courage for someone who’s about to get tickled,” Sousuke murmured into Rin’s ear, hugging him even harder and worming his hands under the redhead’s arms.
Rin’s eyes widened in the split second before he choked on his own giggles, trying to pull away but unable to move an inch thanks to Sousuke’s taller, stronger build. He just had to wrap his arms around his friend’s shoulders rather than around his middle!
“Ahehehahahahahaha! Sohohohouske, why?!” he squealed, squirming and giggling into his friend’s chest, feeling deep, rumbling chuckles rise up from the taller man in response to his own desperation.
“Because I can.” Sousuke sounded so nonchalant, curse him! “And because it’s about time you get a taste of your own medicine, you tickle monster.”
“Buhuhuhuhuhuhut I hahahahaven’t tickled you in forehehehehever – wait, no! No, not the RIHIHIHIHIHIBS!! GAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!”
“Actually, I’m doing this on Nitori’s behalf. The poor kid says you can’t let him go a week without tickling him near to death. Is that true?”
Nitori! Rin swore he’d get him double time after this. “I cahahahahahan’t hehehehehehelp it! He’s sohohohohoho eheheheheasy to cohohohohorner!” Rin let out an actual shriek when Sousuke suddenly darted back down to his upper ribs, still holding him in a tight hug that he couldn’t escape from. “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA PLEHEHEHEHEASE!!”
“Easy to corner? Easy to tickle because he has no fight or flight response? Is that it?” Sousuke chuckled along with his hysterical friend. “You really are a monster.”
“COME OHOHOHOHOHON, SOHOHOHOHOUSUKE!!” Rin begged, gripping his friend’s shirt collar for lack of being able to do anything else to ease the strong sensations coursing through his body. “YOU KNOHOHOHOHOW IT’S FUHUHUHUHUN!! STOP TIHIHIHIHICKLING ME THEHEHEHEHEHERE!!”
“Why should I?” Sousuke replied, digging even harder, making Rin fall into wheezing cackles. “You just said it yourself, Matsuoka. It’s fun to tickle you like this. Especially riiiiight here.”
Rin screamed with laughter when Sousuke found that super sensitive spot right between his ribs and underarms, making his knees give out so he was dangling helplessly in his friend’s strong hold, feet scrabbling on the ground and arms flailing in the air behind his neck. “NONONONONO NOHOHOHOT THEHEHEHEHEHEHERE!! PLEASE!! PLEHEHEHEHEHEASE!! SOUSUKE!! MEHEHEHEHEHERCY!!!”
Sousuke chuckled again, holding him even tighter, refusing to be swayed by his pleas when it was obvious he was having way too much fun. This was supposed to be a punishment, after all. “No can do, Rin. I promised Nitori I’d make you sorry.”
It was several more minutes before Rin met that criteria.
*
8) Lee Makoto, Ler Rin
“Well, someone’s grouchy,” Rin said with a roll of his eyes, lunging for his friend and pushing him down on the couch, fingers finding his ribs with ease. “Let’s fix that, shall we?”
“I’m nohohohot grohohohouchyehehehehe!” Makoto protested, trying to stay serious despite the ticklish feelings lighting up his nervous system with every poke and prod from his tickle monster of a friend. “I’m juhuhuhust upsehehehehet!”
“Same thing,” Rin teased, easily straddling his friend’s kicking legs, having done this dozens of times before and knowing exactly how to get each of his friends laughing themselves silly in no time.
Makoto squealed and tossed his head back, hands flying down to try and push Rin away from his stomach. “Nohohohoho! Dohohohon’t!”
“Still got a ticklish tummy, hmm?” Rin easily found spots that were unprotected by Makoto’s hands to tickle, drawing even more growly giggles out of him. “Tickle, tickle!”
“Dohohohohon’t tehehehehehease!” Makoto cried, face turning pink from the laughing and flusteredness. “Rihihihihihin!”
“Don’t tease Rin? Aw, but I like teasing~”
“Nohohohoho, I mehehehehean—! Dohohohon’t tehehehehease me!”
Rin chuckled. “My statement still stands, I’m afraid. Oh!” He pretended to be surprised when he found Makoto’s belly button through his t-shirt. “Look! A giggle button!”
At this, Makoto finally gave up and let Rin do what he wanted, tickling and teasing and playing around until the brunette was wheezing with giggles and pleading for a reprieve. He was so lost in the haze of ticklish sensations that he couldn’t even remember why he’d been upset in the first place.
“There we go,” Rin declared at last, sitting back with a triumphant smile on his face. “No more grouchy pants.”
“I’m…juhuhuhust confused,” Makoto replied, gradually catching up to where he’d been pre-tickle attack but not so much that his mood darkened again. “He said he was on his way half an hour ago. Where—?”
At that moment Haru finally walked through the door, calm as you please, kicking his shoes off. “I’m here. Sorry, I got sidetracked by a…” He trailed off when he saw the position his friends were in. “Uh…am I interrupting?”
“No!” Makoto cried, and Rin laughed at both of their expressions, his mirth coming out in higher-pitched squeaks when his victim from moments ago decided to get revenge. “Now look what you did, Rin! You’re making us look weird!”
The both of them kept tickling each other and laughing throughout the night while Haru watched them in amused confusion from the sidelines.
*
9) Lee Rin, Ler Nitori
“Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!”
Nitori groaned. “Seriously? I haven’t gotten to ask you even one question yet! How do you keep winning?”
Rin playfully closed Nitori’s scissors with his rock and shrugged. “You’re just really bad at this.”
“How can you be bad at rock, paper, scissors?”
“You’re managing it somehow.” The redhead grinned. “Hmm, let’s see, what to ask next…?”
It was a cold, rainy day outside and the pool was closed for maintenance (apparently the heater had rather inconveniently decided to go out), so the two boys were stuck in their dorm room, bored out of their minds and desperate to kill time. They had come up with a cross between rock, paper, scissors and twenty questions, where the person who won got to ask the other something. So far, Rin had asked Nitori seven questions, with an eighth incoming.
Nitori was quickly losing his patience with this game.
“Oh! I know,” Rin said now, snapping his fingers and brightening. “Are you ticklish?”
“Wha-huh?!” Nitori stammered, giving himself away with his wide eyes even before he managed an actual reply. “I-I mean, yes, but don’t get any ideas!”
“Oh, come onnn. We’re so bored!”
“I’m not bored!”
“You’re not?”
“Nope, I’m good!” Nitori shrunk back, watching with hawk-like eyes as Rin shifted subtly and smirked at him. “Don’t you dare, Rin, I swear—!”
The redhead lunged, but thankfully, Nitori was used to dodging taller boys after he’d stopped growing a couple of years ago and kept getting jostled around by his classmates and teammates. He escaped Rin’s grabby hands, then – thinking quickly – he tackled his friend while he was in a more vulnerable position and started tickling him instead.
“Ah! Hehehehehey, wait! No fahahahahahair!”
“You’re the one who was bored enough to try and tickle me,” Nitori shot back, grinning, scrambling to climb on top of him so he couldn’t get away or fight back easily. “Why can’t I do the same? It was your idea.”
“Buhuhuhuhut I wahahahahanted to hear you lahahahahaugh – hey! Not thehehehehehere!” Rin squeaked and cackled, arching his back when Nitori got to his ribs. “Nohohohohohoho!”
The smaller boy smiled at his boisterous roommate. “Too bad. Looks like you’ll have to be the one laughing today, Rin~”
I DON’T CARE.
➳ synopsis: in which haru says that he doesn’t care for your interests
➳ character/s: nanase haruka
➳ warnings: angst to fluff, established relationship, reader is a big book reader, talk about and light spoilers for the book series heroes of olympus by rick riordan (the lost hero, the son of neptune and mark of athena are spoken of)
➳ word count: 0.9k
➳ notes: i clearly can’t decide what format i want my posts to be in, but enjoy! i’ve had this sort of thing happen to me and it sure was a mood killer because you’re goin on about something you love n your partner pretty much says they don’t really care or they admit that they don’t listen, they just wait for you to stop ._.
𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 + 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭
Tumblr media
quiet murmurs filled the bookstore as you wandered the shelves with a small smile plastered to your lips. briefly scanning the signs indicating which sections contained which genre, your smile brightened as you spotted the young adult section. haru followed behind, vastly less enthusiastic than you were about book shopping and the wave of tiredness had started to show.
you stood in front of the bookshelves, dragging your index finger along the spines of the other books, stopping at the book you wanted and pulling it from the shelf. your smile widened as you happily danced on the spot. turning to haru, you failed to notice the fatigue in his eyes as you rambled to him about the book series.
‘i’m really curious to see how mark of athena goes, because the lost hero focused on leo, jason and piper, but the son of poseidon focused on percy, frank and hazel, so now that they’ve started to combine on top of annabeth being part of the main seven, i have no idea where they’re gonna go with this, and now that camp half-blood and camp jupiter have sort of integrated into one, the interactions between greek and roman traditions and lifestyles and how they’ll mix, but also-’
‘didn’t you buy another book, like, a week ago?’ haru asked bluntly, interrupting your train of thoughts.
‘well, yeah, but i’m close to finishing it and i figured i’d get the next one in the series so i wouldn’t have to wait as long,’ you explained.
‘there are other things to do that aren’t reading, you know,’ he said, shoving his hands in his pockets and yawning.
your smile was immediately wiped off of your face as you realised he didn’t care for your hobbies and your gaze flicked to the ground. humming in thought, you reluctantly put the book back on the shelf, subconsciously hugging yourself as you continued to stare at the floor.
‘can we go home now?’
‘yeah, i guess...’
the journey back home was quiet, not only because haru was tired and desperately wanted to get back home and have a bath, but because the energy you had previously possessed had vanished in a cloud of smoke and you no longer had anything to talk about. after all, your boyfriend had effectively told you he didn’t care to hear about your interests.
when you got off the train, you allowed him to hug you goodbye, but turned away disappointedly when you parted to make your separate walks home. haru watched as you walked away, slightly hunched in on yourself and a frown came across his face. he thought about what he said to you before and in his tired state, he sat back down on the bench and waited for the next train to the town he’d just come from.
when he returned to the bookstore, he navigated his way back to the section you made a beeline to. scouring the shelves, his eyes landed on the book you had picked up before. he knew you burned through books at an alarming rate, and recalling what you’d said about nearly finishing the son of neptune and wanting to buy mark of athena to continue the story without waiting. glancing at the shelf, he saw the remaining books for the series, then at the price sticker on the back of the book he held in his hands. holding it to his chest, he took the other 2 books left in the series and stacked them on top of the one you had almost bought and made his way to the counter.
on the train ride back, he pulled mark of athena from the bag and read the blurb. shrugging to himself, he opened the book and began to read to pass the time. when he arrived back at the station he would get off on, he was a couple chapters in and he couldn’t lie.
he was kinda hooked.
the fatigue he felt when he brushed off your excitement was long gone and he was pretty much dying to ask you a question as he jogged to your house. knocking on the door, his chest heaved while he waited for you to answer, making sure to keep the bag of books behind his back.
‘haru?’ your figure stood in the doorway, a confused expression on your face. ‘what are you doing here?’
‘umm, can i come in?’ he asked awkwardly. raising an eyebrow at his response, you stepped to the side, opening the door wider as a silent invitation inside. when you closed the door, you turned to face him once more.
‘what’s this about?’ you pressed, fiddling with the bottom of your shirt. he didn’t respond, instead, he held the bag out to you with a shy smile it was almost unnoticeable. taking it from him, you peered inside skeptically, but your face glowed as you saw what was inside. ‘you bought them all?’
rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, he nodded and a faint pink hue spread across his cheeks. ‘yeah, and i kind of read the one you wanted today on the train back...’
your grin widened - if that was even possible - and you couldn’t stop the glee from overtaking your body. ‘and?’
‘...do you mind if i borrow the first 2?’
laughing to yourself, you pulled him into a tight hug, kissing him gently as you pulled away from the hug slightly. ‘of course not. i’ll read them to you if you want?’
haru returned your smile and leaned in for another kiss. ‘that’d be perfect.’
Bullying Ikuya for Sport
I wrote this piece back when I watched season three of Free! for the first time. The short of it is that I thought the first two-thirds of the episodes were shit and it was all Ikuya Kirishima’s fault. Though I’ve had the time to chill out since, I’m still a bitter bitch, and will be publicly airing out my grievances anyway.
______________________________________________________________
The Inciting Incident
Just when Haru is finally starting to feel happy and optimistic about the future going into university, Ikuya shows up with his bottom lip stuck out to guilt Haru into believing that it’s his fault that he’s so damn miserable.
From the jump, Ikuya acted horribly selfishly towards Haru. He commodifies his swimming in an attempt to garner attention from his brother, isolates himself and then blames Haru for abandoning him, goes out of his way to avoid reconciling with Haru even though he tries multiple times to apologize and explain himself, and commits perhaps the greatest sin of all by making Haru’s falling out with Rin all about him.
Ikuya never bothered to consider that Haru may have actually had a valid reason for wanting to quit swimming competitively, let alone the fact that he obviously didn’t do it with the intention of hurting him. Has Ikuya seriously never stopped to consider that Haru might have been feeling incredibly lonely himself? He saw firsthand the state Haru was in after he quit the swim club—clearly, something was seriously wrong with him! But from the way Ikuya talks about Haru, even in hindsight, he believes that the boy sat alone at his desk hiding his face in his arms is the picture of strength. I don’t understand how it’s lost on Ikuya that Haru’s friends are a major source of his strength, and their absence took a massive toll on him.
What’s more, Ikuya was able to continue swimming regardless of whatever Haru was doing. Both Rin and Haru are so fucked up over what happened that they completely stop for a while and need to find their way back to each other in order to transition into adulthood. Ikuya is able to move to America with his darling older brother and continues to swim competitively. Then he has another near-drowning accident and because Haru wasn’t the one to save him, he thought “Haru is really gone.” From there he (somehow) concludes that he needs to stop relying on other people even though his brother and his best friend are right there to support him. Hiyori was the one to dive in to save Ikuya from drowning! Then as teenagers, Ikuya has the gall to make Hiyori listen to him say that no one was around to save him? Fucking huh? I don’t even like Hiyori, but I’m offended on his behalf! Would Ikuya have been perfectly content with continuing to rely exclusively on Haru if the middle school team never broke up? How does he justify feeling bad for having responsibilized the people around him to look after him, while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge that people (especially Hiyori) have been and still are around to save him?
Despite realising back in middle school that swimming alone makes Ikuya feel terribly lonely, he’s fallen back into believing that’s what he should be doing in university. He’s re-adopted the exact same unhelpful attitude he had as a kid—he fronts like he’s unbothered by everything when he’s actually miserable. He also thinks relying on others makes him weak and he ought to be strong enough to go at it alone. So, instead of reaching out to his many friends (like Nao suggested he do), Ikuya’s found himself someone who actively isolates him further from everyone else. Even when Ikuya’s teammates at university approach him asking him to join a medley relay, Hiyori pops up to help him decline the offer because Ikuya’s convinced himself that he “can’t swim his best in team events.” Notice that instead of encouraging Ikuya to make new friends and to try swimming with them, Hiyori helps prop up the deluded narrative Ikuya’s come up with for himself that people who compete as part of a team are weak. And this is what Ikuya wants him to do! He thinks that if he ignores the past for long enough, he’ll just get over it and then come out on the other side stronger for it!
While everyone around him has put in the work to grow up, reconcile with the past, make amends, and find a dream to hold on to, Ikuya regresses into an angsty pre-teen who thinks everyone else is a jerk while being the most self-centred and uncooperative of all! He actually accuses Hiyori of misunderstanding him when he challenges the idea that Ikuya isn’t weak and can become the kind of person he wants to be. How can Ikuya honestly be mad at Hiyori for pointing out how fucking inconsistent he is? If he honestly believes that focusing solely on himself is the only way to be strong, then why in the name of god is he letting himself pine over Haru so often? Why doesn’t he try not doing that? And if it’s because he finds he can’t stop himself from doing so, then maybe he needs to re-evaluate his thinking instead of just sitting around feeling sorry for himself. Stop romanticizing the misery you make for yourself like you’re a character in a fucking storybook! It’s unproductive, it’s juvenile, and it’s not reflective of the reality you live in!
You do this to yourself, Ikuya! I don’t feel bad for you at all! And you’re damned lucky you have such caring friends because you’ve got some nerve acting this way towards them!
Why be mad at Ikuya (in S3) and not Rin (in S1 and S2)?
I apologize for talking in excess about this, but the “conflict” of this season of Free! is nowhere near as compelling as it was in the first two seasons. Perhaps my qualms lie primarily with the writers because Ikuya wasn’t introduced to the story until after season two. Thusly, during those two seasons, we never heard anything about Ikuya at all. And in fact, during that time we saw firsthand the extent to which Rin and Haru radically impacted each other! The resolution to Ikuya’s arc doesn’t feel nearly as satisfying as watching Haru finally reconcile with Rin again. And how could it? Ikuya’s arc ends two-thirds of the way through the season!
What did Ikuya do for Haru in season three? How did reconciling with Ikuya help develop Haru’s character? And that’s not to say that friendships need to be made up of a series of transactions to be meaningful. Not at all! But because Rin and Haru left such a lasting impression on how the other developed, Ikuya’s relationship with Haru is doomed to never feel as impactful in comparison.
One may argue that Haru went out of his way to change for Ikuya by practising and participating in an IM event. However, as soon as Haru makes amends with Ikuya, he goes back to only swimming freestyle again. If Haru had been steadfast this entire time that he only (and I mean only) swims free, then it would make his choice to learn the other strokes quite significant. But you’ll notice that throughout the series, Haru adjusts and becomes more flexible in what he’s comfortable doing. At the start of season one, he was only swimming free individually. In season two, he continues to swim free individually, but he also does medley relays as the anchor. In season three, he tells Asahi that he only swims free (both individually and in medley relays) when he’s competing, but he does all the other strokes during practice too. Knowing that Haru was already familiar with the other strokes before deciding to join the IM makes it that much less moving—especially knowing that Haru didn’t have a genuine interest in swimming any of the other strokes again in the future. Moreover, the thing that made Rin’s reconciliation with Haru possible was Rin realising how shitty it was of him to ever demand that Haru should swim differently simply for him—in recognizing that Haru is a person (and a swimmer) in his own right, and isn’t a measure of Rin’s success, he can realize what an injustice he did Haru as both his friend and as his rival.
It’s no loss to Haru if he doesn’t place in the IM. When Iwatobi subbed in Rin for Rei, the team was disqualified. But they all felt it was well worth it. It was more important to break tournament rules and to swim freely if it meant being a team again. In doing so, they were able to stay true to who they were as individuals and were reminded why they fell in love in the first place. With Ikuya, Haru was made to stray from his convictions temporarily just so that he could get through to the other boy. Why doesn’t Ikuya feel bad about that? He made it so the only way Haru could even fucking talk to him was if he orchestrated a meeting that Ikuya couldn’t walk away from, and Hiyori couldn’t interrupt!
I felt that after episode 8, things essentially go back to “normal.” No lasting changes in any of the characters come about except for Ikuya and Hiyori. Thusly, Ikuya’s reconciliation with Haru seemed to have only taken place so that Ikuya and Hiyori could mature—it otherwise had very little to do with Haru himself! And you can see that just by looking at him. Haru is obviously relieved that Ikuya’s found himself again, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the way surprise gives way to absolute peace on Haru’s face when he realizes Rin’s wrapped him up in an embrace and that they’re okay again.
One instance was a little more impactful than the other, even to the characters in the show! And that’s not because friendship is a competition, it’s that each relationship is unique and means different things to each person. However, as a showrunner, I think it’s a bad move to make the protagonist focus all this energy and attention on someone he previously didn’t think about at all over the course of two seasons just for the sake of creating an incredibly stupid conflict to resolve! It’s no wonder why Haru wasn’t thinking about Ikuya in high school when he was still thinking about Rin. Ikuya wasn’t terribly likeable when he and Haru met, and his character post-reconciliation is barely any different than before!
The reason this season is the worst by far is how fucking forced it all felt compared to the previous ones. Rin and Haru’s feelings for each other are equal in depth and intensity. As a result, it’s glaringly obvious in contrast that Haru does not feel as strongly about Ikuya as he does about him. Ikuya propped Haru up as a hero who he wanted to emulate. Because of that, Haru became a glorified, mystified figure instead of being established as Ikuya’s equal. What’s worse is that Ikuya’s entire identity has always been the result of mimicking someone else. Rin and Haru already had personalities of their own before they met. Ikuya’s problem throughout the entire fucking series is his stunning lack of confidence in his own personhood. As a kid, he shadowed his brother and then collapsed in on himself when he didn’t have Natsuya to mirror after anymore. Then, he endeavours to copy Haru, and when he’s faced with the reality that Ikuya will have to exist as Ikuya without Haru, he recedes into having no confidence and is unable to entertain the idea that he is in control of the person he is or wants to be.
And Haru knows all this about Ikuya. He knows the kind of person he is. The first time they met, Haru gathered that Ikuya had an attitude problem because he watched him spend the better part of their first day in middle school glaring at Asahi. Then Ikuya makes a fuss over nobody taking swimming as seriously as him and joins the swim club only to start copying Haru before he finally confides in his teammates that he feels incredibly lonely swimming by himself. Compare that to the impression left by Rin. In comes this kid, all enthusiasm and toothy grins, taking Haru by the hand and promising to show him magic. He was extremely endearing, so it’s no wonder he left such a deep impression on the people he met as a kid.
Most importantly, the reason Rin fell apart when he was abroad wasn’t that he invented problems to blame Haru for, it was because he went too long without a proper support system. Unlike Ikuya, Rin didn’t go to Australia with family or friends. In fact, he struggled to create relationships because of the language barrier. He once tried to describe a cherry blossom tree to his classmates and was given a mop. If that wasn’t bad enough, the one thing that was supposed to provide Rin with a sense of belonging, swimming, he massively struggled in. It was the whole reason he went abroad, right? Sure, he’d have to be on his own for a while, but he thought he could bear it if it meant he could become a stronger swimmer. He was forced to contend with his own shortcomings every single day and couldn’t even talk to anyone about it because they literally didn’t understand him. At least if he went home to Iwatobi, raced his childhood rival, and won, then maybe all that struggling would’ve been worth it. But it wasn’t. He hated himself for how useless he felt. If Rin couldn’t even prove to his childhood rival that he was worthy of his father’s dream, then how could he believe it himself?
What makes Rin and Haru’s relationship so tragic is that after nestling himself deep into Haru’s bones, Rin departs suddenly and returns to Iwatobi almost unrecognizable years later. What makes their reconciliation so sweet is that the person Haru fell in love with finally comes home. Rin absolutely turned Haru’s world upside-down and introduced him, to risk sounding cheesy, to sights he’s never seen before! He broadened Haru’s world to the point where he started wanting things that he never cared about before and didn’t think he ever would. Rin brings out things in Haru that nobody else can—a competitive spirit, and a desire to put himself out there and experience new things. When Haru finds out that Rin was going to give up on all the beautiful things he showed him when they were kids of course he wanted to be the one to show Rin those sights again! In reconnecting, they were able not only to accept the past but to walk together towards the future. They’ve been spurring each other forward since the day they met! Rin makes Haru want to move forward, want to grow, want to change! He meets Rin to share a dream with him. And that’s, like, the most romantic thing I’ve ever fucking heard!
So, you’ll have to forgive me for being unsympathetic towards Ikuya. He’s so far out of his fucking league here and he has no idea! He is seriously so self-important that he thinks he can force his way into Haru’s orbit and position himself in a place as special as the space occupied by Rin. Get with the fucking program, Ikuya!
P.S.
I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who liked my first post and for leaving such thoughtful comments. These mini-essays (for lack of a better term) are part of a purely self-indulgent project where I pen down my thoughts about the Free! series. Collectively, the entire project is a whopping two-hundred pages and counting—though most of it is in the form of bullet points. And while I could just dump the entire thing here, I don’t think it would be fair to ask anyone to read that much—especially all at once. That said, it can’t hurt to share some bite-sized excerpts at a time!
Although I didn’t start writing about this series to share my thoughts with (virtually) anyone, I figure since I’ve already written the damn thing I might as well post some of it. If no one ultimately reads anything I write, then nothing lost nothing gained. But knowing that there are people out there interested in hearing what I have to say (wordy as I am) means the world to me. So, thank you again.
Reading Crunchyroll comments for Free! is so funny because everyone hops on bandwagons so fast. Like I remember in season 1 a vast majority of the comments were shitting on Rin for being a bitter asshole and sore loser. And then midway through Dive To The Future, every other comment is like "blah blah blah opinion opinion, anyways more rin pleaseee" which is so valid lmaoo
Rin's character development was so satisfying to watch, my baby has come so far <3
💝💘 Happy Valentines Day💝💘
-----"Ahh, you're so handsome♡♡♡♡"-Y/n----
💕Taken a back by your comment. These guys come off really awkward, but inside, they are super giddy. He's definitely the type that doesn't know how to react to it. Sometimes, they have a hard time taking the Compliment
Haru: "Uhm....thanks.. umm.." He pulls you in an awkward, yet loving hug. "You're cute too," he whispers in your neck. "H-haru that tickles!!"
Sousuke:" Uh, thanks....you too." he sits there in a moment of silence going back to his reading. "Umm. Y/n... .do you want to go out to dinner? It will be my treat, "  He spoke in his usual uneventful voice. "Uh... sure. that's random, but okay.!"
Hiyori: "Uh. Do you think so? I wouldn't think as far as handsome, but thank you." he gives you a half smile. "Ahh. Don't be humble!" You crossed your arms. "Sorry. I'm used to people complimenting other qualities that I have, thank you y/n" he kisses your cheek.
💕These guys would definitely become super flirty with you. The type that's used to Compliments and know how to handle them.
Kisumi : "I'm well aware of that." he comes put his arm around you. "But hearing it come from you makes me excited." "Um.. okay? What do you mean exactly?" You look up to him. "Ah y/n, you're making this too easy." he places his hand around your chin, lifting it towards  him and kisses you.
Natsuya: "Well, thank you. I hear compliments from  everyone. But hearing it come from you gets me going. "Eh?! What do you mean? Your face scrunched up. "Don't you worry about those details." he winks at you, throwing his arm around your shoulder
💕Super shy and nervous after hearing you say it, most likely would continue to remember it after a week.
Makoto: "Ahhh.... thank you *blush* that caught me off guard..." He turns around, covering his face with his hands. "Aww, you're so adorable Makoto♡♡ " You teased him further by poking his back. "Y/n! I'm not!!"
Rei: " Well, thank you, I have tried a new skin routine in the mornings," he pushes his glasses in confidence. "And I love that you notice my beauty," his glasses fog up. "Ptff!! You burst out laughing. "You're too cute, Rei."
Ikuya: "Geez, don't say that out loud. ".. he gets super embarrassed covering his flushed face. "I like hearing your thoughts about me. It makes me feel fluffy inside." Yet again, ikuya gets embarrassed but at his own words. "Ha... yeah, I'll share more with you. "
Aii: "y-you think I'm handsome.... um.. I think you're beautiful... can I kiss you?" He walks towards you, kissing you on your lips. "Oh, someone's bold today♡." You flashed a cheeky grin. "Yes... I'm feeling confident after your comment, "
💕 These guys are a mixture of all three: flirty, embarrassed, and nonchalant. Also, they try their best to act cool and try not to show how happy they are.
Rin: "Thanks....um yeah *scratch neck* You're very pretty too...and sexy." He spoke the last part in a low tone. " Uh huh, what was that last part?" You poke his cheek playfully. "..nothing!!"
Kaede "tsk...... I don't care about that stuff, whatever, " he walks away, but you can clearly see his red ears. "Ahh... you remind me of a stray cat, " you mumble. "Huh?! " He WhipsHis head back to you. " Oh, nothing...♡ " You walked away while chuckling to yourself. "The hell so funny!"
Asahi: " Huh?!.. well coming from you it make me think I'm special" he blushes. "Aww, your reaction is so cute, Asahi," you teased. "I want to hear more of your encouraging words." he wraps his arms around you.
Nao: " Oh? that caught me off guard. Thank you. You're also beautiful, y/n. " he kisses your forhead. "Using your charm on me as always." You began to become flustered "Charm? What charm? You started it, " he giggles at your response
💕 They get super happy. 100% will give you affection throughout the day. They feel more seen and special.
Momo:  REALLY?!! You really mean it??!!" He comes up giving you a bear hug. "I'm super happy!!! Hearing that from a CUTE girl like you! " he swings you around. "M-momo chill out.. and put me down!!!"
Nagisa: "Handsome!!! he lifts his chin."Hey! What else do you like about me?! " He flash you his  puppy eyes. "Uuhh, I love the way you swim... and you have cute, silky hair. " You ruffled his hair. "Mmhh... y/n... "He pouts while crossing his arms, then his Demeanor changes. "You're so precious.. Come here!!" He jumped at you open arms for a hug
Basketball Date with Shigino Kisumi
A/n- Happy birthday to the best pink-haired boy (reality wise too because he's just a normal boy living a normal life surrounded by gay friends lol)
----------
Watching Kisumi play was not uncommon to you. He'd often stay behind after classes to practice, and would ask you to tag along with him every now and then. But it still amazed you how he could be goofy one minute, and get very serious the next. Sure he wasn't the best player on his team, but he was pretty good and everyone liked his friendly nature.
"Oi pinky, it's your duty today to lock up the gym before heading home."
"Yea yea I know. I'll leave in a while."
"You're practicing more when they've been waiting so long for you?"
"Well," Kisumi smiled in your direction and waved you over, "I was planning on playing with them for a bit."
"You want to play with me? Even though I'm not even close to your level?" you asked.
"It's alright love, I can always teach you or go easy if you want a match."
"Ergh please do not flirt in front of me, Kisumi. I'm still single you know." the guy elbowed Kisumi while everyone else just laughed before bidding their good-byes.
"Happy birthday, pinky!" "Take good care of yn or I'll steal them from you, cotton candy!"
"They've got some pretty awful nicknames for me, haven't they?" Kisumi shook his head as he passed the ball to you. "Well then, let's see if you learned anything last time."
"From you? No. I had to ask a friend to teach me a couple things."
"Oh? So do you think you can beat me now sugar? Don't worry I'll still go easy on you."
"And you say they've got awful nicknames for you." you tossed the ball up in the air, close to his face, before shoving it away and running towards the basket.
"Well my nicknames for you are a sign of my love for you." you heard him laugh close behind you.
You tried to shoot the ball, which Kisumi managed to block thanks to his height, as he dribbled towards the other side of the court. He easily scored a basket, and he should've been used to it, but he still turns towards you with excited, child-like eyes as he happily exclaims his victory.
Gosh you couldn't even complain when you get to see him like this. Pink hair, the same shade as sakura blossoms, all messy and sticking down. His purple eyes shining with excitement and happiness.
He was making most of the baskets, barely missing any. When he noticed you struggling, he came over to you, and helped you take aim.
"Here let me show you." he said as he picked the ball up. "You position your hands up like this, and using the fingers of your dominant hand, you toss the ball up. See?"
He tossed the ball slightly into the air, where it rolled around twice before falling back into his hands.
"Here, why don't you give it a try." he held your hips to help get you into the right position, and then held your hands to show you how to position the ball, laying his head on your shoulder as he repeated how to do it again.
The proximity flustered you. You were glad the others had already left, otherwise that would have been embarrassing. You should've gotten used to it, considering how many times he'd shown you in the same way, but perhaps you couldn't learn thanks to the proximity.
Hell this one time he kissed your cheek before asking you to shoot the ball. How were you supposed to maintain your composure after that?
It took a couple tries, but you managed to get three baskets in. Kisumi ruffled your hair as he praised you for the successs.
"Do you want to go again?" You nodded. "Alright, this time I'll start with the ball yeah?
Kisumi's purple eyes quickly scanned the area around you, as he dribbled the ball through in-between your legs to get past. He quickly positioned his hands above his head as he took aim, tossing the ball right into the basket, again.
"So much for going easy." You mumbled, going over to catch the ball before it rolled away further.
"Sorry darling, I'm just used to playing for my team you know." Kisumi laughed as he wiped his chin with the backside of his hand. "Do you want to go again?"
"No~ I'm tired." You whined as Kisumi nodded and started packing things up. "Would you like to head somewhere else then?"
"Oh yes I wanted to take you to this one park! This will probably be the last wave of the Sakura blooms this year, so we'd better enjoy it."
"Ah~ I'm so lucky that Sakura blooms can be seen till my birthday huh. Maybe we should kiss under one."
"Kisu you kiss under mistletoe, not sakura blooms."
"As if you've read all pieces of literature regarding where you can and cannot kiss." he pouted.
"Okay fine, just hurry up. You also had plans to meet up with your friends after this, remember?"
"Of course. I wonder what kind of 'surprise' they planned this time. I hope it's not as weird as sticking up the image of a pink unicorn on the wall like last time."
"A p-pink unicorn? Oh my god hahaha." you laughed.
"Hey not funny. Ugh never mind, let me just lock up the gym and then I'll catch up with you, yea?"
"Alright, love you Kisu."
"I love you too, yn."
