much needed reupload of one of my favorite instances of musical timing in ANY CARTOON. this is one of those scenes where i've been mulling over how to properly express the sheer catharsis and wonderment this clip gives me, pontificate and try to sound smart by gushing about the animation technique or the behavioral implications within the scene but i truly think it's an instance where brevity works best: I LOVE IT

Zadavia Redesign and thoughts on Planet Freleng
Minor pet peeve of mine is when alien characters are just recolored human's with special abilities so I kind of rehauled Zadavia's design while trying to keep core aspects of it.
On the other hand with General Deuce's I kept finding his a lot of his character lost when I tried to change it, so I ended just adding some minor details instead and changed up his back story a bit.
Ace is there for size reference (and because he made a cute warm up)
TLDR: Frelengisian's have some of the highest genetic compatibility amongst other species so their looks can very drastically between one another. Zadavia and Deuce are on opposite sides of the scale when it comes to this, with Zadavia holding traditional Freleng features and Deuce having more Terran features.
Given that Frelengisian's can reproduce with about any species, the physical traits of the population are a true melting pot of features.
Historically, four features remain present to anyone of Freleng descent.
Large stature (avg height around 9 ft)
Large cloven hooves
Brightly hued skin and/or hair
longevity (avg lifespan about 340 years, being declared an adult at 25)
6 eyes used to be a dominant gene as well but as time went on it became less common for mixed Frelendisian's to have all 6. Tails, on the other hand, have been becoming more common, though many dock them at them at the time of birth for convenience.
Zadavia (and by extension Optimatus) has a very low percentage of alien DNA, so holds many traditional features. She basically looks like how a Frelengisian would have before space travel.
General Deuce, on the other hand, iis roughly 2/3s Terran, so has a rather human appearance aside from his height and hooves.
Deuce acquired a new sword after failing to take the Guardian Strike Sword, Blade half anvilite-half martian steel, it holds a few nasty tricks in its pommel.

Am I the only who thought that Black Velvet was supposed to be the same species as Zadavia?
Like-
The floaty hair covered by a cloak
The solid eyes for all appearances until that point (yes BV’s could be from the scarring but still)
light/shadow manipulation powers
flight
significantly taller than everyone
similar body types
Vast resources
having an uncomfy attraction to Tech
Hell- she even has a VAST ROBOTIC ARMY like Deuce.
I was so certain that she was gonna turn out to be Zadavia’s ex-head scientist or friend or something where had some sort of beef with each other from home.
Or at least have a scene where Optimatus or Deuce tries to recruit her and she point blank refuses (their goals have nothing ngl to do with hers and she see’s absolutely no benefit to helping some spoiled, warfaring monarch and his petty nephew).
It would have made for an interesting “dark counterpart” set up at the very least.

Loonatics KR Bios - Zadavia
Tumblr media
Art created by @purpleluckystar I now adopted. Disclaimer: I now own Loonatics R including the characters and versions of the Loonatics which will soon have updated versions. I'd like you to please do not use or draw this version without permission first.
Name: Zadavia Age: Late thirties Race: Freleng Relatives: Unknown
Personality: Wise, collected, benevolent. Tends to have a caring and motherly nature towards the Loonatics; however, she can also demonstrate a more stern, imposing part of herself when times call for it. Still keep many secrets for herself...
Powers/Skills:
Telepathy: Reads other people thoughts; can also engage in telepathic conversations. Thoughts Manifestation: Shows images of her own memories or thoughts for others to see. Astral Projection: Separates her astral form, or soul, from her materialistic form, or body.
Weapons: None
Other info:
Serves as a guide for the Loonatics Used to be the Queen of her planet. Was the previous owner of the Guardian Sword before it found Ace. Like any member of the royal family, she was born with powers. The reason why only they are gifted is unknown, but a common theory is the closeness to the Guardian Sword might be responsible. Though she often reproves Duck, she likes him as much as the other Loonatics. Due to her only be present in her astral form, her powers have been significantly reduced. Speak in a distinguished manner.
When the old King of Freleng, a planet as old as the Universe itself, decided to leave his role as the realm's sovereign, he gave the Guardian Sword to his daughter, Zadavia, symbolizing her ascension to the throne. Despite her young age, the young Queen already showed great wisdom and a desire to use their planet's advanced technology to help their neighbors. Many among Freleng's council agreed to her ideas, but amongst them were also rivals who wanted to use it for their own selfish deeds, such as conquests and war.
One night, the Universe spoke to Zadavia, warning her about her enemies who planned to strike very soon. It told her to send the Guardian sword to its true recipients, who, to her surprise, were not from Freleng but from planet galaxies away from her. She quickly prepared for her escape, but her enemies were faster and soon Freleng was only chaos and destruction. She helped as many as she could to escape before she had to leave too. She managed to destroy her opponent's spaceship but was severely wounded. She was still able to hide on an ally's planet, who helped her create the capsule that would send the Guardian Sword to Earth. She then separated her astral form from her body, forcing herself into a coma while she healed, and attached it to the weapon so she could guide the future Guardians on their journey.
The sword was sent to Earth and found its true recipients, though its arrival created some damage to the city of Acmetropolis. Either since, Zadavia serves as a guide and a confidant to the young heroes, giving them advice and reprimanding them if they act out. She hopes they will be able to fulfill their destiny, and that her old enemies are truly gone and won't either come near them...

One of my favorite cartoons, Friz Freleng’s LITTLE RED RIDING RABBIT, a Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies production, starring Bugs Bunny and featuring the voices of Mel Blanc and Bea Benaderet (uncredited), hit theaters 80 years ago today. #OnThisDay

"'underrated' is overrated," i protest, and still use it as a term to shill cartoons regardless! but it remains true that Each Dawn I Crow is, like many Freleng cartoons, an unappreciated and novel gem about a nervy rooster who is certain of his uncertain doom. Frank Graham nails it as the sly, nefarious yet mockingly amiable narrator and proves a perfect match for Stalling's unique organ score a la radio drama. darkness and irony of the story certainly doesn't detract from the brilliance of its gags--there's a persistent wryness throughout the cartoon very unique to Freleng's tone.
