This self constructed identity is beautiful and flawed. Complex and layered. In this work I wanted to focus on building textural elements and pattern to create depth and contrast. I combined earthy tones with strong pastel hues, and pattern with flat areas of colour to portray this complexity. Fremantle Corona Diaries. Ian de Souza, artist, Fremantle. Ian started painting again yesterday after taking some time to adjust to his new life in isolation at home with his wife Ros. Recent health issues have put the internationally-renowned and much-loved artist in the high-risk category for coronavirus so he and Ros aren’t taking any chances. Everything for the rest of the year is cancelled, including all his life drawing classes, which he holds at home in Fremantle and at @tresillianartscentre in Nedlands. He’s also cancelled an extended trip to Singapore where he was planning to teach and also work with local artists and collaborate on an exhibition, following a successful exhibition there last year. Ian is a people person and gets a lot of enrichment from his classes and the social contact with his students. For now, he’s connecting with them on the phone, both in conversation and viewing images of their work. Today I was privileged to take a photo of Ian from outside his front gate with a long lense. Yesterday he started revisiting old paintings and put a fresh layer on a painting he did about nine years ago. Today he was touching it up. Although Ian misses his usual social interaction, he looks at the current situation in a positive light, believing the world will be a better place once it gets through this pandemic. “The world has been too focused on the external, not the internal,” he says. “This is a chance to withdraw internally and understand the real value of it.” @iandesouzaart is part of private and corporate collections around the world.
