Heya gang! Remember that thing called fun? Trick question, it’s 2023, of course you don’t! Last time we collectively had fun the *UNSPECIFIED VIRUS FROM UNKNOWN ORIGINS* wasn’t sweeping the globe, the American dollar wasn’t on the verge of losing its world reserve status, and we weren’t approaching World War 3 at hypersonic speed! So, allow me to submit a tune to Tumblr that will allow you to experience fun once again in all its giddy glory! This would be the second week in a row that I’m posting hip hop from France, and anybody who’s been following me for more than two adjacent seconds knows that when I tell you to smash play on a tune its almost never anything mainstream. This is Playa Shit from the 2016 album Special Intervention, and these are beats brought to you by a deejay and producer by the moniker of Nxxxxxs. Now, I’d love to tell you something interesting about the artist featured this week. However, I spent two or three days trying to find ANY pertinent information on this guy, and all I found were pictures, his discography and a few tiny pieces that allude to his character and evolution as an artist here and there. But scant and short interviews are hardly going to be enough to let you know what this guy stands for, and he seems to prefer a low profile. So instead, I’d like to point out that it’s been years since I posted any vaporwave music to my page, and Nxxxxxs brilliantly executes vaportrap. For those of you who aren’t familiar with vaporwave as a genre, smash play. You hear that? It’s elevator music, folks. Elevator music with modern rap vocals pasted on with industrial strength glue. Look at the video’s thumbnail; it’s a reflection of Bart Simpson, representing old school and new school thoughts and aesthetic themes. These are the pillars of vaporwave. It’s a genre of music that almost makes fun of itself as it sounds commercial in style on the surface but is anything but commercial in substance underneath the surface. That about wraps it up for phonk entries from France, so enjoy. And join me next week because I’ve got a real, real dirty American banger queued up.
Tumblr media
Here's his Soundcloud, Twitter and Instagram handles. If you want any additional information on this fella, you’re going to have to extrapolate and gather it yourself as he seems to relish himself in anonymity. Image source: https://www.facebook.com/nfivexs/

An excerpt from my upcoming fic where Steve and Max are thrown into an alternate universe after their untimely death, and they get to be the siblings they both deserve <3
-
Steve Harrington is quiet as he took a slow sip of his hot cocoa, the rich kind made with milk instead of water, topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with marshmallows. The sky above him is darkened, storm clouds rolling in quick, and Steve can’t bring himself to move from his spot on his back porch.
Even if he knows that he’ll definitely get drenched when the rain actually starts.
The back door squeaks open and Steve tilts his head slightly, catching sight of Max stepping out onto the porch herself. Her red hair is still held in the two French braids he had managed, just a bit more mused by sleep. Max tugged on the collar of his sweater she was wearing, the bright red one that Steve knows everyone likes to “borrow”, and she slides onto the step next to him.
Steve is completely silent as he passes the cup to Max instead.
Max is completely silent as she takes a sip, before she passes it back.
“I never really understood why you acted the way you did, if I’m being honest.” Max admits softly, her brows furrowed almost taut as she cast a look toward the swimming pool. It’s empty now, but it won’t be for long. Steve knows this, knows that the closer it gets to Will disappearing— that his father will tell him to call someone to start filling it again. “I thought maybe you were just a mother hen, but…”
“But?” Steve repeats, turning his head to catch Max’s eyes. Her blue eyes are almost watery with tears, and Steve diverted his eyes as one of her hands came up to wipe them haphazardly away.
“You did it so we could just be kids.”
Steve is silent, and instead chose to pass the mug back toward Max- who took it and cupped it in between her palms. Steve shifts so he can face Max, and pauses to prop himself comfortably against the pillar of his back porch.
“I grew up like this,” Steve explains softly, his own brow furrowed as he waved a hand around him. “I just… all of you were so young when it first all started, and if I could give you a little peace…”
“Who gives you peace?” Max asks with wide eyes, and Steve smiles as he cast her a look with slightly raised brows. Max’s eyes immediately widen, and Steve lets out a soft sigh of a laugh at the incredulous look that immediately spread over Max’s face. “Me?”
“You,” Steve nodded with a small smile, especially as Max takes another sip of the cocoa- whipped cream just above her upper lip before she licks it away. “And Robin, the rest of the brat pack too.”
“Really?” Max’s voice is soft, even as she raps one of her fingers against the mug. “But me first?”
Steve shrugs, even as the sky overhead lets out a rumble. Max extends the mug back toward Steve, and he takes another sip before he sent Max a small smile.
“I’ve always wanted a sister, y’know?”
Max allows herself to let out the softest giggle she’s ever heard, even if she’ll vehemently deny it if Steve ever attempted to bring it up. Max smiles, tilts her head back to face the sky, watching as the rain starts to fall.
“I’ve always wanted an actual brother.”

Subcultures in general — once the poles of style and art and politics and music around which wound so many ribbons of teenage meaning — have largely collapsed. What teenagers today are offered instead is a hyperactive landscape of so-called aesthetics — thousands of them, including everything from the infamous cottagecore to, these days, prep. These are more like cultural atmospheres, performed mainly online, with names and looks and hashtags, an easy visual pablum. They come and go and blend and break apart like clouds in the wind, many within weeks of appearing. They have much content but little context — a lot to look at but a very thin relationship to any “real life” anything, like behaviors or gathering places. On one end, even a distinctly in-the-world subculture (like, say, grunge) can be reduced to a vibe packet of anodyne references (cigarettes, grimy things); on the other, a mere mood tone can be elevated to something offered as lifestyle (there are girls who enjoy the color red and a certain Euro effortlessness, and they are called Tomato Girls, while others who prefer white are called Vanilla Girls). If two dozen things on a Pinterest page feel as if they go together, chances are someone, even just as a lark or experiment, is calling it an aesthetic. For proof, you need only log on to Aesthetics Wiki, a wonderfully encyclopedic website for online style tribes. Here you will find not only large categories like emo, Y2K, VSCO, academia or the perennial goth but also categories so specific that their nicheness begins feeling like an Escher staircase of references. The roughly 200 aesthetics found under the randomly chosen letter M contain some that will be legible to many (Memphis rap, Mod), some that involve a kind of style-sensitive hairsplitting (Mallgoth, Messy French It Girl, McBling) and others that are just full-on W.T.F.: Meatcore is for people who appreciate raw meat as a nondietary object, and Monumentality is the appreciation of anything big, like Godzilla, Gothic cathedrals, giant redwoods or asteroids (“many asteroids are fairly large”). It’s hard to imagine a Monumentality meetup because, like so many aesthetics, Monumentality is only referential, its conversation ending right where it begins: Do you like this big thing? Yes, because it is big.

♫₊˚. windbreaker characters and their playlists
Tumblr media
an: it's just for fun and based on vibes !!! you can click their names and see the spotify playlists i made for each character.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Jay Jo:
I honestly don’t know how to describe Jay’s music taste besides it’s like…Head In The Clouds festival lineup with a few extras.
Keshi, BIBI, Giriboy, Beenzino, DPR IAN, DPR Live, Joji, Zion. T, etc.
Probably listens to classical music while studying (not always by choice). Likes listening to white noise to relax.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Dom Kang:
Dom listens to a mix of Hip-hop, rap, and R&B
Travis Scott, Drake, Future, Nas, Juicy J, Kendrick Lamar Chief Keef, Illionaire, The Weeknd, Roy Woods, Partynextdoor, Hi-Lite, Playboi Carti, etc.
Considered auditioning for Show Me The Money at least once. Dom also tries to listen to the same music as Minu and Yuna to expand his music tastes.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Vinny Hong:
Emo rap/Soundcloud golden era/Alternative sounding music.
$uicideboy$, Bones, Ghostemane, Lil Peep, Playboi Carti (why do you think he got along with Dom so well?)
Sometimes he just goes full edge lord and listens to bands like Three Days Grace, Linkin Park, Senses Fail, Deftones and Chiodos.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Minu Yoon:
Indie/Alternative pop sounding bands?? I feel like listening to these bands makes guys more popular with girls. And prior to Mia, we all know Minu was a ladies man.
Chase Atlantic, Cigarettes after Sex, The Neighborhood, The 1975, LANY
Also a big fan of Frank Ocean, Tame Impala, and Steve Lacy.
I think he lowkey copied Yuna's music taste even though he used to make fun of what she listens to.
Tumblr media
✧˖°June:
Listens to a mix of K-Hiphop and indie. Definitely attends a lot of concerts with Heri.
JUNNY (duh), Crucial Star, DMEANOR, Epik High, ASH ISLAND, pH-1, Meloh, Hoody, Rheehab, etc
Celeb crush is probably Camo.  He plays lo-fi in the bike shop while working.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Wooin:
Club rat so by nature his favorite genres are edm or hip hop.
As long as he doesn't have to listen to the Top 100s/radio music, he's vibin. Nothing sucks more than three djs in a row playing the same song remixed in a slightly different way.
I think he likes A$AP Rocky, Oliver Francis, French Montana, Rae Sremmurd, Migos, Tyga, Flux Pavillion, RL Grime, Yellow Claw, Carnage, and Steve Aoki the most though.
Tumblr media
✧˖°Joker:
Hangs out with Wooin, so he's definitely listening to edm or hip hop as well. Just a different end of the spectrum and he actually has specific tastes.
Big gym bro energy means bro step type music lol. He’s listening to Skrillex, Borgore, Excision, and Svdden Death.
21 Savage, Denzel Curry, Trippie Redd, King Von, and Lil Durk are his go-to rap artists.
All of his music is high energy and aggressive.

Rainy Dawg Radio's Favorite Albums of 2014
The Blawg Team got together and compiled their top five albums of 2014, ten years later.
Tumblr media
Emi
Chuuwee, Trizz - Amerikka’s Most Blunted
One of my favorite rap albums ever, Chuuwee never got his limelight. Fun vocal interludes in between brilliant sampling and blunt, catchy verses.
Twin Peaks - Wild Onion
Good indie music from my middle school days.
Ariel Pink - Pom pom
I don’t care that he stormed the capitol.
(Editors note: Rainy Dawg Radio does not endorse the January 6th insurrection.)
Nicki Minaj - Pinkprint
Iconic, formative album. My sister had it on CD and put the foldout poster from the case on our wall.
Mac Demarco - Salad Days
Nobody can’t not like this one.
Sean
Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
Lana Del Rey embodies “the woman on the side” on her gothic Ultraviolence. Sex, money, and infidelity circulate the project as Lana channels a “mistress” persona on swirling Americana instrumentals.
FKA Twigs - LP1
On her debut LP1, FKA Twigs’ voice effortlessly glides across delicate, porcelain beats that sound like they could shatter at any given moment. Exploring themes of sexuality and devotion, Twig’s invites the listener to step into her world.
Aphex Twin - Syro
Richard D. James’ most intimate digital experiments come to life on Syro. Skittering breaks layered with acidic bass lines ricochet across the tracklist, creating a delightfully unpredictable listening experience. The project is peacefully brought to an end with the astounding closing track aisatsana [102].
Arca - Xen
Arca’s iconic debut Xen combines hazy synths and drum samples with dissonant acoustics. Through the harshness, Xen’s haunting beauty never ceases to shine through.
Tinariwen - Emmaar
The nomadic Taureg rock group made their triumphant return in 2014 with Emmaar after being displaced from Mali. Despite being recorded outside their homeland, Tinariwen makes no compromises on Emmaar; their smoldering lead guitars and resilient lyrics are as strong as ever.
k-murph
mitski - bury me at makeout creek
although the competition is steep, i believe bury me at makeout creek is mitski’s best. although i adore every mistki album, only this one has “last words of a shooting star”. and “francis forever”. and “i will”. and every song on the album. i rest my case.
hozier -hozier
hozier’s debut album will forever stand to me as one of the most enchanting projects of all time. his lyrical genius, beautiful vocals, and sheer force of mystical magical forest man-ness propel this album to the status of a forever classic. i love you hozier. i’m sorry i passed out in the pit of your seattle show four times.
TV girl- french exit
french exit has some of the most enjoyable production out of any album i’ve ever heard. every time i play “lovers rock” at the function, the crowd goes wild. guaranteed! also, apparently, this album was released on my 10th birthday! cool!
adrienne lenker, buck meek - a-sides
i love adrienne lenker more than maybe any other person on earth. the haunting beauty of this album is incredible. also b-sides. this kind of includes both, because i’m famously indecisive. i’ve always said i think adrienne lenker is the perfect artist for some good old-fashioned washington clouds and rain.
taylor swift - 1989
sue me. i simply cannot resist a little bit of sparkle and glitter and corny pop—plus, 1989 undoubtedly marked a cosmic shift in our universe. the impact of “blank space”, let alone this album, is undeniable.
Ben
Mitski  - Bury Me At Makeout Creek
Had “Texas Reznikoff” not opened this album, it would still be my favorite album of 2014, but it does, so Bury Me At Makeout Creek is also one of my favorite albums of all time.
Pinata - Madlib/Freddie Gibbs
At fourteen or fifteen years old, you (I) discover an album that not only contains strictly songs you enjoy, but also makes you want to discover more music that sounds just like it. That was Pinata for me… also the production on “Knicks” is ridiculous. And “Shame.” “Robes” too. I’m constantly asking myself “how did he do that” in regards to Madlib’s work on this, but he’s not really reinventing the wheel or anything, it’s just like he woke up and decided to make the best beat you’ve ever heard seventeen times.
Black Kray - 700 Dagreez
I was very late to the Black Kray party but I’ve come to understand 700 Degreez as one of the best cloud rap projects ever released. No album released since has mingled lyrics about crying your eyes out and putting 28-inch rims on a NASCAR Chevy so seamlessly.
Black Messiah - D’Angelo
“Really Love” alone justifies this album at #4 to me…
How To Leave Town - Car Seat Headrest
Confession: I listened to How To Leave Town for the first time two weeks ago. However I’ve listened to “I Want You To Know That I'm Awake / I Hope That You're Asleep" enough since then to last me a lifetime, so I feel entitled to putting it on my list.
Parks
Ten years ago, American/UK album releases were a mess. Two albums stood out to me as being worthwhile… see below
Spoon- They Want My Soul
They Want My Soul is exactly what is to be expected from Spoon. It’s a solid record. “Rainy Taxi" and title track, "They Want My Soul" are standouts.
Les Claypool - Primus and The Chocolate Factory With the Fungi Ensemble
In a dark year for music, Les Claypool blessed us with his presence, if only for a moment. Primus and the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble has exceptional instrumentation and is delightfully creepy.
Honorable Mentions:
The War on Drugs- Lost in the Dream: Great album, just not too familiar with it.
Tom Petty- Hypnotic Dream: Its a 2014 Tom Petty album.
Dishonorable Mention:
Pitbull- Globalization : Thank you dear Pitbull for defining my middle school experience.
Zola
Taylor Swift - 1989
Pop perfection. Perfectly emulates the vibes of the mid 2010’s. One of the first times I remember an album being everywhere. Had 6 singles, all of which achieved massive success, proving that Taylor swift was a crossover mastermind. Unfortunately she desecrated “Style” when rerecording it. Thank you mom for buying this on cd.
Lana Del Ray - Ultraviolence
A perfect follow up to 2012’s Born to die. Helped her usher in a new sound while still staying familiar to her roots. Almost featured Lou Reed.
Lorde - Pure heroine
While technically not released in 2014, nothing encapsulates the 2014 tumblr vibes than Pure Heroine. Lorde ran tumblr, she ran south park, and she ran the radio. It gets a spot on my 2014 list because I was genuinely obsessed with this album in 2014.
TV girl - French Exit.
TV girl’s debut album, which unfortunately did not catch on until tik tok got a hold of it. Featuring the ultra classic “lover’s rock”.  The impact this album had on teenage girls in 2021 cannot be understated.
Tove lo - Queen of the clouds.
Stunning debut from Tove Lo. The album is a concept album split into three parts, “The Sex”, “The Love”, and “The Pain''. Overall a 2014 sleeper hit with some memorable bangers. One time “talking body” came on my sixth grade social studies pandora during class time, and I remember some random kid in my class singing along. On the plus side he's now a kicker on the Oregon State football team so maybe he was onto something. (#31)
tide2004
Flowers Taped to Pens - s/t
San Diego screamo. Very unique and influential sound. This album is one of the first screamo releases that I really got into a couple of years ago.
Machine Girl - WLFGRL
Electronic/digital hardcore from Long Island. My best friend Maddie and I listened to this album constantly the summer before I went to college (favorite tracks: “Krystle”, “Ghost”, and “Mg1”).
Alex G - DSU
My favorite Alex G album. I bought the CD last year and I have the lyric booklet up on my wall. When I saw him live he only played one song off it :/
OFF! - Wasted Years
Los Angeles hardcore punk. Ex Black Flag/Circle Jerks
Cuckoo - Magpie e.p.
Math rock from Hakodate, Japan. I love the guitar on this album so much. Really good staring out the window music, reminds me of taking the train down through California for the first time.
Pal
This took some research, because the music that I was listening to in 2014 consisted of “Fireflies” by Owl City, 1989 by Taylor Swift, the Weezer Christmas album, and that one U2 album that got downloaded onto everyone’s iPod. but looking back, there were some really great albums that year.
First and foremost, we have to talk about Mitski’s Bury Me at Makeout Creek. That album dosen’t have a bad song on it, and I can’t count how many times I’ve played it all the way through. “I Don’t Smok”e actually shatters my ribcage every time and so does “I Wil”l, and “Drunk Walk Home”, and “Townie”, and like every other song also. It’s incredible.
You’re Gonna Miss it All by Modern Baseball was a staple of my sophomore year of high school. It was written when the band was in college and realizing that they were going to be graduating soon and moving on with their lives. Coping with that feeling is a lot, and “Fine, Great” as well as “Your Graduation” will probably resonate with most people who feel like they’re losers in a small town.
Syro by Aphex Twin isn’t my favorite Aphex Twin album, but sometimes I put it on just to feel like I’m hanging out in one of those star nurseries the James Webb telescope keeps taking pictures of.
Alvvay’s self titled is the perfect thing to throw on to get some good old fashioned pining in. It’s indie/dream pop sound is light enough to not make you too sad, but also not peppy enough to get your hopes up too high. Also, it just sounds amazing. I’d eat it and it would taste like caramel and strawberries maybe.
How to Leave Town by Carseat Headrest is one of CSH’s best albums in my opinion. It’s more electronic and the themes of teenage romance in their earlier stuff fade more into adult uncertainty.
Too Bright by Perfume Genius is what I think of when I think 2014. I remember my dad playing Queen in the car on the way back from summer camp. Looking back on it, the album's emotional explosion of empowerment, queerness, drag, and radical self-acceptance is incredibly powerful, and I will definitely be playing it more.
Steven Neff
La Dispute - Rooms of the House
One of my favorite albums ever. I revisit this album so regularly so I can practice my cold hard scowl while walking home from class in pouring rain. Woman (In mirror) is genuinely a perfect song.
Adrianne Lenker + Buck Meek - B-Sides
The pinnacle of absolutely crushing acoustic singer-songwriter projects. It is incredible to think that this project is now ten years old considering Big Thief’s increase in cultural relevance. This was before Big Thief was formed as a band and a year before the two got married as well which you can just feel that emotion in this project. I weirdly like the B-Sides far more than I like A-Sides.
Car Seat Headrest - How To Leave Town
Will Toledo. Man. I believe that he claims that How to Leave Town is just a compilation album of stuff that he was working on around the time but you would never tell. “The Ending of Dramamine” and “Hey, Space Cadet” are in the running for my favorite opener and closer to an album genuinely ever.
Modern Baseball - You’re Going To Miss It All
Nostalgia packed up into thirty mins of angst. The quintessential midwest emo album. Timeless. I can sing the entire album from front to back without missing a single word.
Freddie Gibbs, Madlib -Pinata
Not a single skip all the way through. Madlib masterclass as always making it real easy for Freddie Gibbs to do what he does best. “Deeper” is such a good song and easily my favorite Gibbs song ever.
Sofia
Dean Blunt - Black Metal
Mix of alternative/indie and Americana, among other things, that really works when you’re trying to pass time. I first got into this album over the summer when I heard “100” for the first time on vacation – big fan of “HUSH” because of the jazz kind of thing it’s got going on. I also like the way Dean Blunt uses samples in this album; he samples “Over Your Shoulder” by the Pastels in “100” and “For You” by Big Star in “LUSH”, both of which work really well.
Whirr, Nothing - Whirr & Nothing (Split Version)
Noisy and heavy shoegaze/rock split EP. Listened to this EP a lot over the summer lying in bed and counting down the days until I could leave town and come back to school… My favorite song is “Chloroform” by Nothing because it does a quiet-loud-quiet thing that I love.
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation
Dense, long shoegazey psychedelic rock album. The title track (“Vad Hände Med Dem?”) is sung in Swedish. I listened to this album on the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island on a stormy day, which is exactly what it calls for, I think. When I put this album on I skip “Duck and Cover” because it scares the fuck out of me.
Alex G - DSU
Another album that’s great for summer listening. Alex G’s high-pitched voice works really well with the twangy guitar and piano. The lyrics to the tracks on this album are enigmatic as ever, with a bunch of sentimental/emotional lines (“I love you, Harvey, I don’t care” in “Harvey”, for example). Seeing “Sorry" live during his acoustic Seattle show changed my life fall quarter freshman year.
Mac DeMarco - Salad Days
This album is mostly on my list for nostalgia – I did a decent amount of listening to this sophomore year of high school, and I feel like this is the type of music, that lazy-day mix between melancholia and indie guitar. Even though “Chamber of Reflection” got beat to death a few years ago, I still think it holds up, although I’d say my favorites are the first three tracks (so “Salad Days,” “Blue Boy,” and “Brother”). Recorded in Mac DeMarco’s Brooklyn apartment!
Dawson
Aphex Twin - Syro
Slightly less game changing compared to 30 years ago, Aphex Twin’s Syro shows the continuation of his sound. While hits like “180db” grow popular on social media, ambient songs like “aisaitsana”appeal even to audiences not interested in electronic music as a whole.
Machine Girl - Wlfgrl
While in my opinion Wlfgrl is significantly overrated by fans compared to the rest of Machine Girl’s discography, it still shines through as a beautiful album. Their debut on streaming services, this album continues to draw in new fans more than recent works, and esoteric sampling introduces fans to various other niche works such as “The Machine Girl” and “Ginger Claps.”
Joy Again - Forever
No longer named Forever Lesbians, the debut album by Joy Again remains an homage to their former name. A mix of intriguing instrumental tracks and melancholy hits, Forever’s 30 song, 1 hour 17 minute runtime makes current Joy Again fans jealous with its length. The combined length of Joy Agains entire discography since 2014 is less than the length of Forever.
PUP - Self Titled
PUP’s self titled album still hits hard today, despite its 10 year age. Hits like “Reservoir” and “Factories” are a clear demonstration of the talent the band has - vocalist Stefan Babcock’s grandmother’s comment about a “pathetic use of potential” (resulting in the name of the band) are easily proven wrong on this record.
Death’s Dynamic Shroud - NEON GENESIS EVANGELIS
A precursor to their 2015 hit I’ll Try Living Like This, NEON GENESIS EVANGELIS is a must listen for fans of the band. The song “CD Player” is an earlier version of the much more popular song “CD Player, Pt. III”, my personal favorite, “Strange Scenery” creates beautiful soundscapes that almost evoke imagery of the aforementioned strange scenery.
Skyler
(In no particular order)
Kagayaki - Masakatsu Takagi One of my favorite albums of all time. Pure joy for the entire runtime, Masakatsu Takagi’s ear for contemporary classical composing on top of sonically effervescent soundscapes is genuinely so beautiful. I’ve cried to this album –I wanna say, like– 10 times over. His ongoing Marginalia series continues the grounded, blissful tones that Kagayaki started and I couldn’t be happier.
N****s On The Moon: The Powers That B Disc 1 - Death Grips
Conversely, the first half of what would be a completed The Powers That B is composed in what’s nearly an opposite direction to Kagayaki. Compared to their other works, it’s easily overlooked (and while I can absolutely understand why), N****s On The Moon’s dynamic, Björk-fuelled brutalist production and harsh lyricism is such a good time.
You’re Dead! - Flying Lotus
Really incredible hip-hop/jazz-fusion record by Flying Lotus. I remember being given a hand-me-down of this record on vinyl (along top of a fresh copy of his 2010 LP Cosmogramma around 2016, thank you Nolan) and just gawking at the interior artwork while listening to “Tesla.” Really incredible stuff.
Three Love Songs - Ricky Eat Acid
BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER BANGER. Ricky Eat Acid’s Three Love Songs is in a similar breadth to that of Takagi’s Kagayaki in its minimalist, earthy tones with tracks like “Big Man’s Last Trip Outside” to the grand orchestral airy vocalizations on “I Can Hear Breaking As One,” all accompanied by rounding Moog synths. Sounds like the word “honeycrisp.”
Gray Data - Five Star Hotel
Bombastic harsh noise with gripping discordant beats, Gray Data’s expansion on hardcore EDM means so, so much to me. Incredibly funny and inventive use of sampling (thinking of the siren on “Outside Solaris”). Hypnotic and migraine inducing in the best way possible.
Honorable Mentions: Swans - To Be Kind; Sun Kill Moon - Mom, Benji
Willow Goetting
BLAWG 2014 top albums
Machine Girl - WOLFGRL (2014) (Electronic/breakcore)
Machine Girl is one of the most iconic alternative electronic artists to come out of the 2010s, and has had a large influence on the rise of ‘hyperpop’ and similar genres. WOLFGRL is a favorite of mine not only because of its impeccable tracklist, but also because it heavily features samples from Ginger Snaps (2000). Top tracks: “Frenesi (Machine Girl GabberTrap Mix)”, “Mg1”, and “Out by 16, Dead on the Scene”.
Waveless - Waveless EP (originally released 2014 on BandCamp–says 2017 on Spotify but IDC) (Shoegaze)
The first song on this album is one of my favorite shoegaze songs of all time, and the whole EP is an incredible release. I am pretty sure the band is long gone and broken up now, but it's been a favorite of mine this winter. Top tracks: “Nausea (song for Proski)”, “UPCLOSE/UNCLEAR.”
Alex G - DSU (2014) (Indie rock)
DSU still goes down as one of Alex G’s best albums to date–a perfect follow up to the 2012 release TRICK. It also features a re-recording of the demo “After Ur Gone”, which definitely still recirculates on Spotify as a favorite pick of the rampant ‘alex g archive’ accounts. Top Tracks: “Serpent is Lord”, “Axesteel” and “Harvey”.
Mac Demarco - Salad Days(2014) (Indie/synthpop)
Salad Days planted the seed for the explosion of indie artists from 2014 onwards, with his style still inspiring so many acts coming out today. I still hear “Chamber of Reflection” playing in coffee shops to this very day. Top track: “Treat Her Better.”
Jessica Lea Mayfield - Make My Head Sing…(2014) (Singer-songwriter)
Very sweet and lovely springtime music for when I need some easy listening. I listened to it a lot when I was about to roadtrip to Montana last May, so it holds a very special place in my heart. Top tracks: “Seein* Starz” and “Standing in the Sun.”
Thanks for reading! Be on the lookout for the next joint Blawg Team post, which will see our writers put together some of their favorite lines in music history...

Call Out Your Name (Fiona Goode x OC)
Tumblr media
Summary: When Fiona's cancer comes to claim her, Nyxa is ready to fight to get her back, no matter what it takes on her end.
Word Count: 888
Warnings: Temporary character death, cancer, blood, resurrection
Tumblr media
Though she knew it was coming, Nyxa wept when Fiona’s cancer overcame her. It couldn’t end like this. It wouldn’t. Nyxa fell to her knees and screamed until her throat hurt. She cried out to the empty room, her eyes turning to the window and looking at the moon as she invoked the name of the goddess, pleading with her to find a way to revive Fiona and restore her as the Supreme. Nyxa's prayers seemed to fall on deaf ears.
The tears came again, somehow even harder than before. The goddess of witches had refused her an answer, or even a sign. But that would not stop her. With Fiona laid in bed as if asleep, Nyxa dries her tears and steps out of the room, magically binding it to prevent all who wish to enter. She had to seek a willing ear and for that, she must leave the coven and search elsewhere.
The furious rapping on the door to Marie Laveau's caused her knuckles to ache, but she didn’t relent until the voodoo priestess answered. "What the hell do you want, witch bitch," Marie accused.
"I need to reverse death."
"Child, I don’t mess with that sort of thing. Not anymore." Marie made a move to close the door, but Nyxa wedged her Louboutin in, preventing the slam that Marie had intended to end this conversation.
"Don’t make me kill you," Nyxa threatened. Any other time, Marie would have laughed such a threat off, but there was a storm brewing in Nyxa's eyes and that made her threat far less empty than she would have liked.
With a heavy sigh, Marie relented. "Invoke Maman Brigitte. She’s in charge of the dead, and will be most likely to be sympathetic to your cause. Offer her pepper infused rum and ask her your favor. You might have to sweeten the deal. Now get the hell out."
Nyxa withdrew her shoe, scuffed, but replaceable, whereas Fiona was not. She made her way back to the sealed room, the rum having been rather easily acquired from a merchant in the french quarter. She fetched a silver goblet from the kitchen on her way up, and began the summoning.
"Maman Brigitte, Goddess of Death, come to me, hear my plea." Nyxa raised the cup towards the moon that still shown brightly into the room. She repeated her request twice more until a black smoke materialized in front of her. As it dissipated, it revealed the goddess. Nyxa knelt and offered her the glass of rum.
Taking the cup from her hand, she spoke. "What cause do you have to summon me?"
"I beseech you, restore Fiona to me."
"Your rum is good, but I fear it is not enough for me to fulfill your desire."
"Then what do you wish? Name it and it is yours." Nyxa wasn’t about to play like she wasn’t desperate. Whatever sacrifice was needed, she was prepared to make.
"I need a shepherd. When your time comes, your soul shall be indebted to me and you will usher souls to the other side for eternity."
Nyxa didn’t even need to think it over. "Yes." The word came out of her mouth naturally. What else was she going to do with eternity anyhow? She was probably bound for hell as it was. What Maman Brigitte was offering didn’t sound half so bad as the possibility of that. "As long as you can promise me that Fiona will be restored as she was in health and spirit, then I accept. What do I need to do?"
"It’s a blood pact. I’ll need your blood." Nyxa nodded and made for the letter opener kept in the drawer. She used it to cut her palm, and let the blood drip into the goblet of rum. She winced at the sharp pain of the force needed to make the dull blade cut her skin. She’d clean and wrap it later.
Maman Brigitte drank down the contents of the cup with no hesitation. The moon's light was snuffed out by a gathering of clouds and lightning flashed across the sky. By the time darkness settled again, Maman Brigitte was gone and Nyxa was left with Fiona.
The young witch rushed to her bedside. "Fiona! Fiona, please. Tell me she brought you back to me!" She felt more tears well up within her, and found that she couldn’t hold them back, the anticipation of disappointment was too much. Just as her vision began to blur, Fiona turned her head towards her. The sobs now were ones of joy. The voodoo goddess had made good on her promise.
Nyxa reached for Fiona's hand, taking it between both of hers. "What deal did you strike to save me," Fiona questioned disapprovingly.
"It doesn’t matter. I would have struck any deal to see you as you should be, as the Supreme of this coven."
"Ha! Don’t tell me whatever deal you made wasn’t just a little bit selfish. This coven surely doesn’t want me, no one but you, anyhow."
"Is that so wrong?"
Fiona hummed, as if thinking it over, but didn’t reply. Heaven forbid she show a little bit of gratitude even after having just been brought back from the dead. Nyxa didn’t care. All she wanted was Fiona, and that’s what she’d gotten.

curious if you have any takes on what hs characters would listen to
i HAVE. ENTIRE SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS DUDE (they're linked in the names). heres just some of the humans for now but if u want the rest lmk LOL
dave: 2009 dave listens to misogynistic ultra-masc rap n hiphop (50 cent, a$ap) + online-type aggressive "subversive" dudes (tyler in his goblin/slur era, donald glover in his slur era-- think Les and bonfire, kanye) + skrillex style EDM, as he realizes hes bi n works thru his issues, he transitions to more "sensitive" artists (frank ocean, flowerboy tyler the creator, kevin abstract, kid cudi) and adds in some experimental (arca, yves tumor, aphex). i think ultimately amine reminds me the most of dave's energy overall tho (limbo is v him, burden probably his anthem).
dirk: the music taste of the worst man u know. anime nightcore covers, drain gang, etc. but as u get deeper into his psyche, it goes "ironic" (unironic) anime -> alt hip hop -> nu metal (nine inch nails, ho99o9) -> alt edm but also slurville/evil ass music (mindless self indulgence, hollywood undead) + lgbt rave anthems -> dark compositional ambient (vessel, maenad veyl). it ends at creep by radiohead.
rose: "avant garde, horror, and feminine blasphemy" so that means dark compositional ambient (a lot of phillip glass & horror soundtracks + violins), a lot of dark music (vessel, lucifer), gay edm (boyz noise), & alt edm (pearly drops, john glacier, eartheater). i think shes a very fka twigs/earth eater/arca type of girl. i imagine her liking sensual french songs + alt/indie metal (unloved, red mecca), and when she's younger/when she's early on in the comic, classic riot grrrl (shes a critical consumer obvi) and sonic youth + mitski/fiona apple (thats when her mommy issues r the worst)
roxy: high energy femme songs/lgbt alt + hyperpop. like babymetal, some azaelia (again, shes a conscious consumer) tove lo, alice gas, cobrah, slayyter, some megan, bigklit, young ma (i think roxy wouldve had a crush on young ma), plus rock/metal like nova twins. willow, machine girl, rico nasty, shygirl, ashnikko, kali uchis, flo milli, chloexhalle, etc. yeah she would have the tastes of a crazy hot girl
jade: nature sounds w experimental/ambient (a lot of green-house), solange, pink pantheress, the marias. a lot of indie/teenage girl core, light sounds. some experimental: grimes, machine girl, cocteau twins, lush. she likes kate bush and prince; upbeat, playful and danceable songs. her main themes r songs abt optimism, belief, hope, romance.
john: listens to the tiktok top charts. i began with sad, reflective compositions (maxene cyrin) and a lot of operatics/ambient (phillip glass, m83, ataraxia), then transitioned into the tiktok side (memo boy, the avalanches) -> old 60s rnb, jazz, blues -> 2000s indie and tiktok resurgence (gorillaz, vierre cloud, omar apollo), and then contemp straight boy top charts/pop (tyler the creator, kid cudi, kanye) + tiktok indie (tame impala, MGMT). hes got corny/cheesy tastes bc i think hes a genuine guy that just likes what he likes w no shame

Friday night funkin swap : a love for the cat
(____________________________________)
(Friday night funkin by @kimberlygbart and her best friend Ebolasan)
Chapter 1
I've been working in the offices of F.B.I agents for 3 years now, even I'm proud of it, I'm part-time, I have my Wednesday and my weekend, my boss is super cool and sometimes strick towards the other most expired agents to stop the most dangerous criminals and terrorisms on earth. Oh actually, I didn't introduce myself, I'm Catrina Kitten, I'm 18, I'm 4'9 tall, so average height. I have a slightly pale pink bustier sweater, a decorative belt with a large blue buckle, the sleeves of my sweater are not attached to the sweater and are purple half-tone with pink. She wears slightly flared glacier purple pants and mid-tone pink and blue wedge shoes. I have a pink necklace around my neck, mid-length curly white hair with a pink streak, a piercing on my right ear, light green eyes and a long white tail and all soft fur. But not all of my body, my body has skin like other human beings. I have pink tinted lips, little cat ears, a thin face and a black muzzle instead of a pink muzzle.
Tumblr media
I'm getting ready today for my work, my boss had just called me that I'm going to work a little late between 6 or 9:20 p.m., but for me it doesn't matter. My boss is looking for a most dangerous woman in the country, this woman is named Stella, she is a most wanted drug trafficker in all countries, such as the United States, France, Russia, China and etc... but as I am quite good at research on the computer, we will be able to locate her, as she calls them or photos she posts on her social networks. I leave home, airpods in my ears, I have a passion for French songs. Yes, I really like France, it's a country that I really appreciate. I get on my bike and I put on some music, there are times when I start singing in the street and people find a pretty cool atmosphere, I start pedaling and when the music starts up, I had put Soprano and the title of the song is "our daily heroes", that I find this music so magnificent, this song reminds me of doctors, firefighters, gendarmerie, police and other jobs like this. In the office of the F.B.I, we have a musical atmosphere like rap, jazz, to evacuate the stress of the employees. Today the sky is beautiful, no clouds and no rain. So on my way, I start to sing, reproducing the same words as this French singer. I arrive at the office, agents welcome me with their best smile. I arrive at the elevator by crossing Alain, my geek colleague from the F.B.I office, we show on the 10th floor of our office. Today it's pretty quiet, but since I'm on duty at night, there are hardly many people in the F.B.I. The boss pays a visit to a tall man dressed in white, with a white tie and his head. But my god his head is a bomb with a white cross behind his head. He must be 8'11, but when the boss has his back turned, this man looks at me, I look up at him, and he has orange eyes like a sunset, his bomb head is so cute . But tell me what, this man is dressed in a white tie suit, with a black shirt matching his head, he is super tall, he even almost touched his head to the ceiling. He has a fuse behind his head I haven't seen since.
Tumblr media
My boss continues the tour, but I heard his name down the hall, a Mr. Whitmore, but when the boss said the name of the job. The job where Whitmore works is a leader of the task force. He works The Great Good. But I never heard that name, but as I am the most gifted in computers and other computers that the agents can penetrate there without any danger but they do not prefer to take the risk, because our boss forbade US to go in their sites. It's like the famous urban legend story of scp. But I'm going to see this site, because I'm curious enough now. Tonight, my boss has left the office, I only have me and Alain, a friend of mine. We are in the computer room, I had put nordvpn to prevent hackers and other hackers from seeing what I am doing by spying on where it is. I do some research on the internet such as cooking recipes, famous musical notes and very cute videos with animals. Alan gets up.
Alain: I'll be back, I'll have a coffee! Do you want some Catrina?
Catrina : Hmmm! A red herbal tea please! With sugar.
Alan: It works!
While Alain leaves to get drinks, I take the opportunity to see this site, because I know that our boss has forbidden us from entering it, for security reasons. I'm sitting in front of my laptop logging into the website, with a fake name of Lilianne Blake. A fake name without being detected, I put the nordvpn on the internet for my safety. During my research, I finally come across the famous site. This is a working group that is top secret.
Catrina: what is it! This thing?
I click on the internet link, but I get a black screen. Then a word was written by The Greater Good. What I had heard earlier with this man with my boss. With the name and there is an image of a bomb and a bar to type the passwords. But since I'm pretty good at calculating passwords and secret codes. A smile emerges, but I take the risk to take and see inside the site. I start to put a USB key on my computer, I wait 20 seconds and the password appears. And I hit enter and a text pops up on my screen and I read it.
Catrina: Welcome, Whitmore.
A very cute name for a rich man that I'm not going to lie. I go through the site, but I was right, it's like the scp foundation, but in reality. I come across a picture of a man all in white, he looks...very sad.
Catrina: Gabriel...Updike...
I do not know any in this name, while I continue to search, I come across the man from earlier. He's the leader of the task force, it's Whitmore. I take my notebook and write down his name to get more information about him, then Alain cries out when he sees what I'm doing.
Alan: God damn it! ALL CRAZY WHAT IN THIS SITE CATRINA! You're going to put yourself in serious danger.
I look at Alain, he looked at me with a look like fear, I don't understand why he had reacted like that, he jumps on my computer and he closes the site before I see very few photos of the unknown creatures that the people don't know, Alain sighs with relief, then he looks at me with displeasure.
Alain: you are very sick! You knew what the boss forbade us to do...
Catrina : Wait! what are you talking to me about.
Alan: Wait! ARE YOU CARING ABOUT MY MOUTH...

The 5th Annual Derrick Sanskrit "Everyone's a Critic" Awards (part one: music and movies)
Tumblr media
(note: I have posted this thread on Twitter at the end of December for the past five years, but with that platform's future more dubious than ever, it makes sense to back up 2022's edition here)
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Time for the fifth annual Derrick Sanskrit "Everyone's a Critic" Awards for all the pop culture I thought was simply the best over the past twelve months.
There's so much, we're gonna slow-drip this year, so let's start with music...
Tumblr media
Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack’s solo EP is seventeen minutes of just fantastic collaborations, including a reunion with Pin Me Down bandmate Milena Mepris. Had this been a full LP, it would be way higher in the rankings.
Tumblr media
A top-to-bottom reworking of 2020’s New Symbols, this LP benefits from both two more years of Tom Vek’s reflection on his art as well as wider distribution on digital music platforms so people could actually hear it.
Tumblr media
Nine years after his debut LP, the French DJ proves his mastery of timeless synth anthems with this album that feels like the soundtrack to a long lost John Hughes movie about sexy computer hackers.
Tumblr media
It feels like cheating to include the soundtrack to a 2021 concert film in this list, but the album dropped in 2022 and it freaking rules so whatever. This is the sound of the Dan Greene Cinematic Universe.
Tumblr media
A mostly-instrumental album of lush chiptune soundscapes, this high-def volume of Australian electronic anthems begs the question “why aren’t we having another chip resurgence right freakin’ now?” Danceable, worldly, melancholic, and beyond.
Tumblr media
A timely reminder that indie rock can be snarky and clever without losing the charm of four-part harmonies and driving hooks. Like cherry red Doc Martens stomping through a field of sunflowers, The Beths show us how to suffer with a smirk.
Tumblr media
No album this year felt as immediately BIG as the sophomore effort from this English post-rock phalanx. It commands attention before curling up in a ball to hide at your feet and whisper deep dark secrets in your ear.
Tumblr media
Continuing her transformation from cloud rap to pop, Kilo Kish challenges conventions with this collection of toe-tapping bangers about societal woes, public image, self-worth, and the ills of consumerism, all framed within a retro arcade game.
Tumblr media
A punk album so specifically of its time without immediately dating itself by naming names. A concept album about running a punk band like a business that comes to its logical conclusion: in-fighting, ego clashes, bankruptcy, and thanking the sponsors.
Tumblr media
Simply the best breakup album in ages (sorry Swifties). Cutthroat and callous, honest and earnest, this math rock sophomore LP challenges pop song structure as much as relationships challenge the edges of individual identity.
Wasn't that so much fun? So many fantastic albums in 2022, such wonderful songs to sing and dance to. Good times.
And now, our second category... it's time to talk about MOVIES...
Tumblr media
The vainglorious adventures of an aspiring podcaster focusing largely on the culture clash between New York and Texas. Quite possibly the best performance ever from Ashton Kutcher.
Tumblr media
While this mock-rock-doc never reaches the parodic highs of Weird Al’s previous “UHF,” the extended Funny Or Die sketch carries heaps of charm with an all-star cast of comedy cameos.
Tumblr media
Easily the most unexpected film of the year, this holiday horror fusion brings all the delirious twists and turns you’d expect from the creator of “Too Many Cooks.”
Tumblr media
Simply the biggest, boldest, wildest action movie to date, RRR offers more spectacle per minute than Zack Snyder does in an hour, while still finding plenty of time to sing and dance.
Tumblr media
Jordan Peele’s third horror film forgoes shocks and scares in favor of slow burn dread with thoroughly enjoyable examinations of race, media, exploitation, and religion.
Tumblr media
This celebration of the power of art to question authority and buck societal norms poses the question “what if Freddy Mercury and Jimi Hendrix were best friends in feudal Japan?”
Tumblr media
Simply the most fun I had in a movie theater all year. A fast, stylish, star-studded action farce, like Guy Ritchie directing a script by the Coen Brothers, this film taught me more about Thomas the Tank Engine than my nephews ever will.
Tumblr media
Proving Knives Out wasn’t a one-off fluke, Rian Johnson delivers a whodunnit with bigger stakes, bigger stars, bigger spectacle, and bigger laughs. A covid-era mystery for Agatha Christie fans of any age.
Tumblr media
In their second feature, the Daniels have produced what feels like a once-in-a-generation iconic piece of cinema. Sweeping & grandiose, intimate & delicate, EEAAO is the sci-fi family immigrant tale we never knew we so desperately needed.
Tumblr media
The most I’ve cried in the theater since Toy Story 3. Marcel’s journey will melt the most frozen of hearts and make you believe that anything is possible with a positive outlook.
