New French comics about Norse mythology SPOILERS
And, listen, it’s not bad. Their version of Loki is the closest of what you would expect Loki to be: redhead, genderfluid, Bi, shapeshifter, morally grey.
Also, Freya is a plus size woman, so YAY.
HOWEVER, the Marvel inspiration is still very strong in this one.
How they introduce Loki: Son of Odin.
I mean, the blue giant on the cover was a big clue too.
Stop inspiring yourselves from Marvel when you write about Norse mythology, y’all. PLEASE.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
What enraged me more than anything was that - even though the whole plot is on Jotunheim, they totally erased Angrboda AND HER KIDS TOO.
I know. I’m shocked too. Usually, even if Angr and Sigyn are erased, writers still find a way to intoduce Fenrir (good boy!), Jorg & Hel (*cough*MCU*cough*).
But here? NOPE.
And don’t ask about Sigyn.
(Well, Marvel and the Marvel/MCU inspired stuff ^^’)
A line that made me laugh was towards the end, Loki telling Odin that no chain would be strong enough to bind him.
Me: Err... Well, in a world with no son from the Incantation fetter, I guess? ^^’
No punishment for Loki either, though we have Ragnarok ^^’
So no children from his wives, BUT the main character hooks up with him, and you’ll never guess what happens!!!
They went there.
I feel like they’ve done some bare minimum research: a few Valkyries, a few gods (Idunn, Bragi, Skadi - whom they totally mistook for Artemis: read the Lokasenna, PLEASE, Odin, Freya, Frigga & Thor (of course: and hey! Bonus points for Thor looking like Myth!Thor... the appearance of MCU!Thor gets given to the heroine’s boyfriend... who also hooks up with Loki before dying), but not enough to actually master the subject? So it becomes sort of frustrating for people who actually love norse mythology and would want to read that comics for that reason?
In a more personal note: SO TIRED of those writers so thristy for Loki they will erase his wives and kids so their main characters can have sex with him and have children with him, without them feeling guilty about the wives and kids (AT LEAST The Essex serpent had that? XDXDXD )
As I said, there is some good stuff, but not even talking about Angrboda when you are in f** Jotunheim??? COME ON. So rude.
(Idunn & Bragi deserved better)
Here is the cover of the book I'm currently working on, it will be published (in french) at the end of the year. It's the comics adaptation of L. Colombani's famous novel "The Braid". Lylian is the writer, I'm the artist.
