#OTD in 1801 – The trial of United Irishman, Napper Tandy, begins.
James Napper Tandy was born in the Cornmarket area of Dublin in 1740; one of three children born to James Tandy, an iron works merchant, and Maria Bella Jenkins. Tandy received his education at the Quaker boarding school in Ballitore, Kildare, amongst its alumni Edmund Burke, a champion of Catholic emancipation and a supporter of American independence. Originally a small tradesman in Dublin, he…

‘Farmers cannot look at Brazilian beef on EU shelves when we are told beef must be more sustainable’
Tumblr media
EU representatives have approached Brazil’s government, seeking to rekindle negotiations on the stalled 2019 EU-Mercosur trade agreement.
The renewed contact comes amid rapid changes in global supply chains due to the pandemic and the Ukraine war, which have increased Brazil’s influence as an agricultural producer.
The Ukraine war has pushed Europe to strengthen international alliances and supply chains, hence the EU’s renewed appetite to sign a Mercosur Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
In 2019, Mercosur members agreed to sign an FTA with the EU, after 20 years of negotiations. But the FTA was not ratified by the Council of Europe, due to concerns about its environmental impact.
As Amazon forests blazed in the autumn of 2019, personal and political relations sharply deteriorated between France’s president Macron and Brazil’s far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro, which further cooled trading relationships.
Deforestation increased further in 2020 and 2021.
Several EU countries, MEPs, and environmental activists have voiced disquiet about the environmental impact of the proposed deal.
Irish and French farmers in particular are opposed to a deal that they argue will open the floodgates to imports of Brazilian beef.
Conversely, other powerful EU lobby groups, such as car manufacturers and big industrial enterprises, are pushing the EU hard to expand access to 260m South American consumers.

Your recent post mentioning the merits of country-wide bilingualism reminded me of something: One of my friends in secondary school (in mid 00s NL) was involved in something like a model European Parliament or European debate programme, where once a year representative students from EU countries would meet up somewhere and debate stuff.
Everyone at this event could speak English + their own language, and perhaps some German or French. That is, except for the UK delegation*. So what invariably happened is that on Day 1 everyone would talk shit (during free time) in their own language about the other countries, except the UK delegation could not, because everyone understood them.** On Day 2, countries with similar languages, (e.g. Benelux/Germany/Denmark/Sweden, Portugal/Spain/Italy/France) would band together and talk shit with each other, still in their own languages but they'd be mutually intelligible. And finally on Day 3 these groups built bridges between each other using their limited knowledge of French/German/Latin/Ancient Greek to make one supergroup just to talk shit about the UKers because they were the only ones who didn't understand any other language (and Day 2 attempts at inclusion were met with demands that English would be easier for everyone).
My friend qualified for this thing 3 years in a row and it happened every time without fail. It made us all wonder if this is what happens in the actual EU parliament as well.
*afaik there were only English people in the UK delegations.
** The Irish delegation was able to talk shit about the English by speaking Irish or English with extra thick accents that were impenetrable to others, allowing them into the European alliance. One year someone from Ireland was caught passing info to the UK and Ireland was booted, a huge scandal that no one expected and the word "ierlandverrader" (portmanteau of ireland and land traitor) became a meme among my friends for a while.
This is HILARIOUS

Hi! So this is gonna sound weird, but I’ve kinda been learning about Irish history backwards? Like, I started with the Troubles (bc of family involvement), then back to the 1916 rising which got me more interested in the people involved which took me further back and etc etc. I know I’ve been doing it “wrong” but I’m just starting to come up to the 1798. Do you happen to have any recommended readings or particular persons of interest to read? Any collections of primary sources would be more than welcome!
Secondary sources I would recommend:
The Year of Liberty by Thomas Pakenham - about the rebellion in general
The People's Rising by Daniel Gahan - about the rebellion in Wexford
The Summer Soldiers by ATQ Stewart - about the rebellion in Ulster
Wolfe Tone: Prophet of Irish Independence by Marianne Elliott - about Wolfe Tone
The Life and Times of Mary Ann McCracken by Mary McNeill - technically this is just about Mary Ann but I think it's pretty good for Henry Joy McCracken too because there aren't many biographies of him
Orangeism in Ireland and Britain 1795 - 1836 by Hereward Senior - obviously exercise caution on whether or not you think you can mentally handle this subject but book about loyalism during 1798
Castlereagh: War, Enlightenment, and Tyranny by John Bew - about Lord Castlereagh
2 things that I would also recommend reading about for context are the French Revolution and the British radical movement of the late 18th century. for the French Revolution 1 book I would say is good is Liberty or Death by Peter McPhee and for the British radical movement... the book The English Jacobins by Carl B Cone does a good enough job
Primary sources:
The Memoirs of Theobald Wolfe Tone by Theobald Wolfe Tone - title is pretty self explanatory. It's Tone's account of his own life + his diary
The United Irishmen, Their Lives and Times by RR Madden - this is considered to be the 1st history of the rising & was written with the help of many people who lived through it, so it includes a lot of first hand accounts. HOWEVER. beware that Madden was your archetypical mid 19th century Catholic Irish nationalist and the bias created due to that shows through in every single part of these books
Memoirs of the different Rebellions in Ireland by Sir Richard Musgrave - this is another very early history of the rising, also written with the help of people who lived through, also including a lot of first hand accounts. HOWEVER. Musgrave is like Madden's Orange counterpart in that this book is also wildly biased and should also be read with a degree of caution
Personal Narrative of the "Irish Rebellion" of 1798, Sequel to Personal Narrative of the "Irish Rebellion" of 1798, and History and Consequences of the Battle of the Diamond by Charles Hamilton Teeling - 3 accounts of politics in Ireland in the 1790s written by someone who as a young man led the Catholic paramilitary the Defenders
The Drennan letters (a collection of letters that Belfast doctor William Drennan and his sister, Martha McTier, wrote to each other between the 1770s and 1820s), if you can find them, are another great primary source on both the United Irishmen & on what life was like back then in general, as are the McCracken letters, which I know are available free online somewhere I just can't remember where exactly I got the pdf from
There are a lot of them but if you're interested in primary sources you might also read some of the political pamphlets/books that were going around back then -- the most famous that come to mind in this context are Wolfe Tone's Argument on Behalf of the Catholics in Ireland, Thomas Paine's The Rights of Man, and Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France but there are wayyy more than that and at least some of them are on the internet archive

The dangers of the combat zone
Tumblr media
"Women accompanying the military were in what military historian John Lynn calls the combat zone, which is
best defined by the intensity and immediacy of danger and by the ability to do direct harm to the enemy… the full reality of war lives here. Modern armies regard it as an innovation to send some women into combat, but in the campaign community all women stood in harm’s way.
It would be odd to imagine that the women accompanying an army, exposed as they were to all the dangers of the military world, didn’t pick up arms and fight. In 1643, in the earlier stages of the English Civil War, a regiment of troops was recalled from Ireland to support King Charles. Rumours swirled that they were accompanied by a regiment of women, and that ‘these were weaponed too; and when these degenerate into cruelty, there are none more bloody’. Indeed, when 120 Irish women were taken prisoner at Nantwich they were discovered to have long knives with them, causing a furore in the press. The dubiously named True Informer excitedly reported that the knives in question were half a yard long, with a hook at the end ‘made not only to stab but to tear the flesh from the very bones’. The likeliest explanation for these knives, however, is that the women weren’t soldiers; they were camp followers, and they needed the knives to help them with pillage and self-defence.
The women of the campaign community did fight. The Bishop of Albi, on the battlefield of Leucate in southern France to administer to the dying in 1637, came upon the bodies of several women in uniform. ‘These were the real men,’ he was told by the Castilian soldiers, ‘since those who had fled, including certain officers, had conducted themselves like women’.
Madeleine Kintelberger was a vivandière accompanying the French Seventh Hussar Regiment at Austerlitz in 1805, along with her soldier husband and their six children. The regiment was under heavy attack from Russian forces when her husband was killed by a cannonball, and her children seriously wounded. Madeleine herself had taken a cannonball to the arm, virtually slicing it off below the shoulder. As the Russian Cossacks approached, she scooped up a sword to defend her children, receiving further wounds in both her arms before the family was taken prisoner. Madeleine was six months pregnant and gave birth in captivity. Her bravery was rewarded with a pension from Napoleon. Examples of cantinières fighting are ‘legion’."

Dark Arts (wielded “when necessary” which is really just…whenever her instincts say)
Pyromancy - Raegan is an Igneus; a species of witch that is immune to and can conjure fire at will, the trait being passed through her mother’s bloodline
Backstory
Born in Avignon, France, Raegan had a turbulent childhood. While her mother was loving and kind, she often had to travel for her work - as did Raegan’s father, meaning she was often with only one parent for extended periods of time or had to be watched by one of her paternal aunts. When he was around, Marcel was not an affectionate man…in fact, he was often physically and verbally abusive to his wife right in front of Raegan and extended the treatment to her as she got older.
Eventually he discovered that Kassady had had an affair and conceived a son with another man. This coupled with his disdain for witchcraft led him to abandon his wife and daughter. So, the two moved back to Kassady’s hometown of Galway, Ireland.
However, times were tough. Her mother’s career as a dragonologist was no longer lucrative enough in the troubling times, and so they again relocated to London.
It was there that Kassady met a tragic, sudden end at the hands of an unidentified serial killer (who many suspected was actually a wizard). A newly orphaned Raegan, upon hearing the news, burned her house to the ground and wound up killing the officer who reported it accidentally.
The emotion was enough to unlock the ancient magic that had been hidden away inside of her, and just days after her mother’s funeral she received her Hogwarts letter. She now lives with her best friend (Diana)’s aunt in Scotland.
Academics
Best subject: DADA
Favorite subject: Flying and History of Magic
Favorite teacher: Hecat and Sharp
Worst subject: Herbology
Least favorite subject: Herbology and Divination
Least favorite teacher: Binns
Quidditch: Chaser (sixth year) and Quidditch Captain in seventh
As a student:
Rarely late, but she does miss (more than) a few classes in her fifth year
Detention record reads more like a rap sheet
Infamous but still respected; dedicated and intelligent
Future
Career: Auror
Though Raegan notoriously resists authority and despises the incompetence of the Ministry, she sees working for them as an opportunity to change things. Being in on the more secretive matters going on behind the scenes of the Wizarding World (and the chance to deal with them under the protection of their influence) doesn’t hurt, either.
They likely would have fired her on her first day for her insubordination, but they can’t deny the fact that she quickly becomes one of the best they have. Really, it’s a case of mutual loathing maintained through an advantageous truce.
Eventually, she does leave of her own accord, and takes up studying ancient history and magical weapon making.
Spouse: Sebastian Sallow (m. 1898)
(thanks @rypnami for motivating me by association to finally post this months old draft 🤠)

#OTD in 1798 – Irish Rebellion of 1798 | Irish rebels, with French assistance, establish the short-lived Republic of Connacht.
The Irish Republic more commonly referred to as the Republic of Connacht was a short-lived Irish breakaway puppet state established with French Directory military support for 13 days during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Below is an excerpt from the proclamation of General Humbert, the French General who led the French and Irish armed forces in the short-lived Republic. The proclamation was made on…

Lyon 1959
Irish Cruiserweight champion Con O'Malley faced off against French Cruiserweight champion Gerard Maury, for the European belt.
While the first half of the match was mostly even, the second half ended up as a total squash, with one wrestlers stable throwing in the towel to save their man from any more punishment.
*UPDATE - The Irish wrestler won*

who’s excited for stats so far?? i bet none of you are but i’m inflicting them anyway! ...under a cut.
so far, though, we have 198 separate submissions across 166 works!
so far the longest submission piece is 551 words long! wow! there are also another 3 submissions that are over 300 words long, and one piece has 797 words across 7 submissions! the shortest submission, to contrast, is 5 words long! that’s also great!
there are currently 4 artists that have had 3 pieces of art each submitted, and 8 artists that have had 2 pieces. that means there’s currently 137 other artists! oh sorry, while i was drafting this post we got a fourth submission for one of the four.
how about things anyone can go look at? there are currently 7 pieces of public art that have been submitted! four of them are from canada (and 3 are from the calgary specifically), one is in the netherlands, one is in spain, and one is in new york. the fourth canadian one also has copies in spain, japan, and arkansas. there are also 3 submitted buildings! two are in spain, and one is in thailand!
gender! we’ve got 122 pieces from male artists, and 32 pieces by female artists! yes that doesn’t add up to 166, the other 12 are either multiple artists, unknown artists, or i felt like a creeper trying to trawl through their tumblr/website and it wasn’t in their bio. sadly, we don’t have any openly trans, nb, or otherwise genderqueer artists submitted (where openly is “i could find it in the same 5 second google search to determine nationalities”)
even more niche stats! the largest submission (that isn’t a building, a cave, or public art) is 2.15 m (7 ft 1 in) x 34.14 m (112.0 ft) and weighs 4 tons! close behind it is another that's approximately 3.7m x 25.2m (12ft x 72.9ft) but weighs significantly less! i did not feel like mathing which had more square footage. the smallest submission (that is, a physical piece in real life, digital art can be insanely small) is 5.9 x 6 cm (2 5/16 x 2 3/8 in.)!
how about locations? excluding the multiple copies ones, there are 32 pieces located in the united states, 9 in spain, 8 in france, 6 in canada, 5 in england, 4 in italy, 3 each in russia, australia and mexico, 2 each in the netherlands, wales, scotland, and ireland, and 1 each in israel, finland, germany, portugal, poland, japan, austria, ecuador, thailand, latvia, singapore, belgium, and argentina! i know that doesn’t add up but there’s a lot of pieces in private collections, owned by the artist, or we just couldn’t find their location, sadly.
artist nationalities get a lot more variable! i did my best to look up every artist i could and include their birth country and the country they did their works in! except john singer sargent because he just didn’t want to settle down and i didn’t want to give him like six different countries.
starting off, we have 43 submissions by american artists! 18 by french artists, 17 by english, 8 each by canadians and italians, 6 each by russians and spaniards, 5 each by chinese, irish, and germans, 4 each by dutch, mexican and belgians, 3 by latvians, 2 each by finnish, polish, scottish, malay, serbian, and armenians, and 1 each by portuguese, japanese, austrian, ecuadorian, thai, swiss, argentine, cuban, kazhak, colombian, danish, and iranian!
i do not currently have stats for jewish artists for you, because i forgot to write it down my first time through wiki, and now i have to go through all ~140 articles and websites again. relatedly: there are 8 works by known-to-be-gay artists, but i’m already running into wikipedia going “well he sure did a lot of male nudes but he also might have had relationships with women” and i am feeling uncomfortable poking through people’s private lives so... i hope you don’t mind it i stop... counting..... i mean if they’re open about it i’ll write it down still.
how about the ages of works? there are 4 things from before the 1400s, 3 from the 1400s, 6 from the 1500s, 3 from the 1600s, and 2 from the 1700s! 5 from 1800-1850, 4 from 1850-1880, 10 from the 1880s, and 9 from the 1890s! 9 from the 1900s (that is, 1900-1909), 5 from the 1910s, 5 from the 1920s, 4 from the 1930s, 4 from the 1940s, and 6 from the 1950s! 3 from the 60s, 4 from the 70s, 7 from the 80s, 15 from the 90s, 12 from the new oughts, 17 from the 2010s, and 13 from the 2020s! and three ongoing projects!
and to wrap things up: there are 101 paintings, 12 sculptures, 17 what i’m calling installations (they’re often mixed media or unusual media, i would give examples but i feel like i would bias submissions), 6 photographs, 2 pieces of textile art, and 21 digital arts, drawings, or comics!

On the subject of Arthur losing his mother's inheritance, how did the Norman invasion go for him? When he loses yet another identity and a new language slides onto his tongue?
It went incredibly shittily for him. I've read more than one academic that places the birth of British Imperialism in 1066, and I don't think they'd be entirely wrong. For many of the so-called 'high middle ages', sources from Welsh poetry, the Irish Annals or even Scottish records don't describe invasions from England as English incursions into their territory the way we today do. Instead, there's often this sense that 'England fell first.' Because while the Anglo-Saxons had been aggressive with their neighbours, see Offa's Dyke on the Welsh border and periodic problems in Scotland, there's nothing like the dominance we later see. If anything, Ireland, as the centre of Celtic Christianity, had more influence as Scots Gaelic came via Irish migration onto the west coast of Scotland. It's been argued by other academics that the Norman invasion is as equally responsible for the decline of Celtic Languages in England as the Anglo-Saxons themselves were.
But all that said, he spent about ten years in the Mediterranean as the Varangian guard took on a new Anglo-Saxon flavour and became something like the Byzantine Empire marines in addition to the usual sort of Emperor's bodyguard that was traditional. And in the 1070s we have a few scattered references to the first-ever use of a 'New England.' Somewhere on the black sea, maybe Crimea was settled by those English exiles. So Arthur is overseas from about 1066-1075 when there's finally no hope of a return of Anglo-Saxon rule.
He doesn't really lose his Englishness, English remains the tongue of the lower classes, but people stop writing in it almost completely. And a headcanon I've had for a long time is he made Matt learn how to read in English almost immediately after the Conquest of New France because he himself couldn't read Old French or Middle French very well for decades. He loses not an identity but the ability to express that identity.

Venom and Name Meanings
Eddie, from Edward -- (middle English) "Guardian of prosperity"
(Guardian or a protector it's right in the name.)
Brock -- (old English, Celtic) "badger"
(Also possibly a complete coincidence but nevertheless amusing, Eddie Brock kinda sounds like Edderkopp, the Norwegian word for "spider.")
Cletus-- (Latin, from Greek) "famous, renowned" (he sure is, lol)
Kasady, from Cassidy -- (Irish) "curly-haired,
Descendent of Caiside"
(According to Wikipedia Caiside a family from the Ulster region of poets, churchmen, scholars and hereditary physicians to the Maguire Kings of Ireland.)
Frances -- (English) French, her middle name Louise -- (French) famous warrior, and her alias from the comics Sandra -- (Italian) Defender of mankind
Barrison kind of sounds like garrison, a fortified place. Also discovered this, sharing without further comment...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anne -- (French from Latin) "favor, grace"
Dan -- (Anglicized from Greek from Hebrew) "God is my Judge"
Lewis -- (Welsh) "strong, leader"
Dora -- (Latin) "gift of God"
Carlton -- (English) "Settlement of the free peasants" (how very ironic)
Drake -- (from Old Norse or Old English) "Dragon"
