FULL NAME: Charlotte Maria | formerly Ganache, during one of vis earlier days assassination mission, ve had taken up the name Marianne as an undercover identity to attend a needed ball for the job. This continued on for any high class undercover related missions that when ve finally was noticed by the WG, vis wanted poster taken up the name Mariah. Not being very attached to vis birth name, ve took this as an opportunity to change vis name and had been going by Maria since.

GENERAL APPEARANCE: Maria stood at the height of 360 cm (11'8"). Ve has full lips, often seen with a light tint of pink gloss, a set of three big round eyes, red in color and blond long wavy hair reaching the middle of vis back, the ends curled up in rolls and put up in a loose bun. Ve has a pale complexion, and although it tanned easily ve appeared lighter in color, with a lanky yet fairly muscular build, it made up for the disproportional height with wide shoulders and broad chest as they provided a nice balance. Although Maria wasn't big on body building, with vis profession of choice and the sea that ve chose to travel in did require ver to keep up with vis training. Ve has a strong lower body strength as vis fighting style relied heavily on ver gymnastics capabilities.

GENERAL WARDROBE: Maria has a wide varieties of clothings, being a fashionista. Though ve tended to favours minimalistic appearances and usually donned jumpsuits or those appearing of similar fashion. Alongside Charlotte Armande, Maria wore a large floppy straw hat with an all white jump suit, wasit bag attached themselves with kitchen utensils, a swordstick (or a white umbrella sword) performing as a cane and multiple smaller knifes straped to their body which was the White Ghost : Assassin Maria look.

GENERAL PERSONALITY: Maria is a flamboyant man who dons multiple faces, professionally. As an assassin, it is a requirement and as an actor, ve relishes in the experiences. However, Maria is much more of a transparent person than one might have expected from someone who largely took on undercover missions. Though most of vis traits went lost in translations when one cannot decipher the truth within the poker faces. Many would be in agreement however, that Maria is a confident man with enough charisma exuding a captivating and reliable presence. Maria has a largely romanticized view on life and lives keen to those of obsessed artists. Those more extreme traits came off as unnerving to many, when Maria could have the brightest of smiles during the darkest of times. Though it is theorized that perhaps Maria put on such a daunting act towards those ve did not like (or were neutral) to cause commotions knowing the negativity it sparks, out of boredom (and for amusements). In spite of the many unsavoury traits that might have suggested otherwise, Maria is a highly perspective person and can read the atmosphere well (expected of assassins), and knew of limits and boundaries. Though if ve might respect them however was a different story.

FAMILY

CHARLOTTE LINLIN

Maria appears to have no connections to her mother, having been raised by vis half-siblings, the snake-neck hybrid quadruplet sisters. Ve showed neither strong loyalty nor any hard feelings regarding Linlin, holding a neutral ground. Though it was noted that Maria (then Ganache) was a fairly obedient child, carrying out any missions provided with a precision of a natural born assassin. Thus was why Linlin quickly took a notice of ver and sent ver off to more outside and quite dangerous missions. It came as a surprise for the family when Maria had run away, easily so as ve had escaped during a mission, that most thought ver lost or dead not willingly run away. When questioned of vis thoughts on Linlin, Maria said she was an overgrown child, unworthy of many vis siblings' loyalties.

SIBLINGS

Unlike with Linlin, Maria is shown to be the closest to many of vis half-siblings and held memories of them together close to vis heart. Maria is the closest to the long-neck hybrid quadruplets sisters, seeing as ve was mainly raised by them. Ve was especially closed to Amande and Hacheé and took many of their traits as inspirations, be it their fashion or usage of long swords. Maria was also close to the eldest triplets brothers and the longled hybrid triplets sisters, having gone on many missions with them together and have had babysitted Chiffon and Lola for a short while alongside Brûlée. Charlotte Marble and Charlotte Raisin were the closest to what Maria felt to be parental love, though having only raised them till 2, ve left them each weapons, twin pistols and a swordstick, both of which were Maria's former weapons. During the while that Maria was reunited with both Chiffon and Lola, ve learnt of Pudding's existence and was seen distraughted at the thought that vis half-sister was only conceived into the family due to Maria's disappearance. Though both Chiffon and Lola argued that vis blindness might have resulted in Pudding had ve stayed.

FRIENDS

Dandelion Andersson

Dandelion, or Dante as Maria called them, is a long time friend and partner of ver, having first met during a joint assassination mission. They had been partners in crimes since. Little is a known about Dante as they hadn't been shown aside from a shadowed silhouette when Maria called them through the Den Den Mushi to apologise for standing up to their long-awaited date on Baratie as ve had a `slight errand` to get to and asked to meet back up at the newly rebuilt Dressrosa on a later date. Dente was understandably upset.

Maria was a former apprentice chef to owner Zeff, having served at Baratie for three years since its opening and had been a regular since. During the Whole Cake Island arc, having heard rumors of Germa soldiers arriving in East Blue while holding Sanji's `Only Alive` wanted poster, Maria took it upon verself to contact vis friend Dante and set up a date on Baratie for security measures. Maria left the Baratie before Dante could arrive however, seeing the World Economy Newspaper with a new goal of catching up to Sanji at long last, taking along with ver was a souvenir from Zeff and `well wishes` from other staffs for Sanji.

Black-leg Sanji

Maria saw Sanji in a little brother light, finding joy in teasing the flustered younger boy whom mistaken ver for a woman, ve had never corrected the misconception. During Whole Cake Island arc, Maria was seen holding Sanji's `Only Alive` poster while riding off to Baratie, reminiscing their memories to Zeff and the staffs. By the end of Levely arc, Maria sailed away from Baratie with a souvenir from Zeff to catch up with Sanji after having read the World Economy Newspaper.

Maria mentioned knowing and hinted at being on good terms with Morgans while reading the World Economy Newspaper.

ALLIES

Fire Tanks Pirates : Rolling Pirates

Maria met up with the Fire Tanks Pirates during while travelling to Wano, catching up with Chiffon and Lola in the process. Ve congratulated on Lola's marriage while bonding with vis in-laws through cooking and cooing over vis nephew. Ve left their ship, taking with ver a group family photograph and in good mood.

Charlotte Maria has a considerable power and reputation as one of the few successful underground solo artist, precise at their crafts and equally has an incredible financial backing for a hidden LSC owner alongside valuable connections in both worlds. DEVIL FRUIT: Mitsu Mitsu no Mi/Honey Honey Fruit | Maria ate the Mitsu Mitsu no Mi, a special-Paramecia type devil fruit that allows ver to create, control and transform into honey at will. Combined with Maria's skills in culinary and vis creative self, ve uses vis powers to an advantage and is extremely versitile in vis usage. Maria is an awakened devil fruit user, thus was able to transform nearby inanimate objects into honey and gain some abilities to control certain temperatures of the honey itself, hardening and melting them at will though it is noted that it takes a lot out of Maria's stamina to do so.

HAKI: Busoshoku Haki, Kenbunshoku Haki | Maria is a proficiant user of the Kenbunshoku Haki being a gunner and sometimes a sniper while is relatively average at Busoshoku Haki.

WEAPONRY & RELICS: guns, knifes, swords | Maria is an extremely capable marksman with a 100% precision in both gunning and swordsmanship. Ve carried around a couple of knifes in vis waist bags and two rifles strapped onto vis leg. Ve also has either a swordstick or umbrella sword that ve used as both a weapon and a cane

Author's Notes: I got very lazy at the end... Maria was supposed to be my older Pudding/Sanji love child but then headcanoning went out of hand and this gigantic shit came up. Ve was originally supposed to have Mushi Mushi no Mi : Moderu Ga (Insect Insect Fruit : Model Moth) but then the picture of ver melting into honey popped into my mind and I went *snap fingers* yep, that's the one!, so I did last minutes changes. I haven't went back to edit anything yet and English is my third language so please don't mind the mistakes 8,-)

My favourite mangas & mangakas #04

Today I’m going to tell you about Yukito Kishiro, but to be honest I will only write about one of his mangas: Gunnm, also known as Battle Angel Alita.

If you know it already and don’t recognize the names I use, it’s because I read the French version and the names are closer to the original version than in the North American version.

Let me simply start by saying that Gunnm probably is my favourite manga of all times. I’ve read the nine volumes several times already and I’m never bored, I always love the story, the art, and it always makes me think and feel a lot, it’s not a simple story. It’s something more, something personal and universal at the same time, with violence but also love and psychology, philosophy... It really is a complete work of art, making your mind work as well as your imagination. So obviously: if you haven’t read Gunnm, read it! And I’m not saying “read it” like I said for Dragon Ball. You HAVE TO READ Gunnm! It’s only 9 volumes and you will not regret it.

The story takes place in the future, in a geographically unknown place called Kuzutetsu (The Scrapyard), some sort of huge dump pile seating underneath a gleaming city in the sky called Zalem. All the people living in the Scrapyard dream of seeing Zalem and going there but for most of them it is impossible.

In this setting, a cybernetician doctor named Ido Daisuke stumbles upon the damaged body of a female android while searching for parts. Fortunately, the girl’s brain is still intact and he does everything he can to give her a decent life, starting with a new body. He calls her Gally (like his former cat).

Gally doesn’t remember her past but from time to time, she kind of sees or feels glimpses from her old life and all that has a strong impact on her. It will make her go places and do things, meet people, fall in love, take part in a violent motorsport... always meeting deeply interesting characters, each one with his own vision of the world (even villains share some deep reflections with Gally).

I won’t tell you more but if you like mangas and science-fiction you should definitely give it a try and then come tell me what you think about it!

Now that I’ve introduced the manga, I’ll tell you about the French edition. Glénat, the publisher (one of the first, if not the first publisher to introduce mangas in France), has recently started a new version of the Gunnm series, supposed to be more faithful to the original version, that’s what they are doing for instance with Dragon Ball’s Ultimate Edition. I’ve had the old Gunnm volumes for some time but I bought the first one of the new edition to make a quick comparison:

As you can see with the above photo, the new edition is a bit larger in size and features the complete illutration rather than a vertical crop of it, but not the original logo like on the old one. It’s also good to know that they have abandoned the occidental reading direction to the benefit of the Japanese way of reading (always a good thing in manga).

One big disappointment in the new version is the absence of the Author’s note, which was present in the old one. I always like to read what the mangaka has to say about his creation, and Kishiro’s notes are often very interesting so it’s a shame that they dropped that (I’ll ask them why).

But then, the huge improvement of the new edition over the old one is the presence of the original color pages (15 of them in this first volume). I’m really glad that they are doing that with mangas nowadays. Until now, these pages were turned to bad quality black and white, here’s an example (though I must say it wasn’t so bad in Gunnm but in some other mangas it was terrible):

Some other good points in the new edition: they have redone the translation entirely and it sounds better (and it’s probably closer to the original Japanese text), they also have kept the original onomatopoeia (and re-translated them as well). But there’s still one negative thing you can see pictured above and below: they have rearranged some of the pages layouts and this results in cropping on some images:

So, that’s about it for the comparison between old and new (French) edition, the new one’s good but I’m not entirely satisfied. When will they decide to make something perfect...

Before leaving you, I should talk about Gunnm: Last Order that Yukito Kishiro started five years after finishing the original Gunnm story. I read the first few volumes but didn’t like it, especially the art style which is very different from Gunnm. Furthermore, I don’t consider Last Order a necessary read, the orginal 9 volumes of Gunnm form an amazing complete story in themselves.

Oh and I forgot to tell you about Gunnm: Other Stories! It’s a single volume initially published in 2007 containing four stories that take place in the universe of Gunnm. It starts with a chronology of the main events from Gunnm and Last Order and then tells you these stories that help develop this world and its character. Not essential but a good read nonetheless.
