Stay Golden Sunday: Old Friends
Sophia befriends a forgetful old man on the boardwalk. Blanche and Dorothy fight a child for Rose’s teddy bear.
Tumblr media
Picture It...
Blanche and Dorothy are gathering items to give away to a rummage sale, assisted by a redheaded Sunshine Cadet named Daisy. Sophia is on her way to the boardwalk, with Dorothy driving her. Blanche sends Daisy to Rose’s room to fetch some things, and Daisy takes a shine to an old teddy bear. Blanche impulsively gifts her the bear, and Daisy skips out just as Rose enters. While Blanche chatters away happily, Rose goes to her bedroom, then runs out in a panic: Her beloved teddy bear Fernando is missing. Blanche quickly lies and agrees to help her look.
DOROTHY: I’m off the rummage sale. Would you like a ride? SOPHIA: No, I wanna do cartwheels for six miles. Get your keys and let’s roll.
On the boardwalk, Sophia walks up to a bench where an old man is sitting and asks if anyone is sitting there. He makes a smart remark at her, and the two snark at each other while comparing eye problems. He presents his name badge: His name is Alvin Newcastle, and he’s a security guard at a retirement village where one of Sophia’s friends lives. They take a shine to each other, and Sophia gives him half of her veal and pepper sandwich, telling Alvin her own name.
A week later, Rose is moping in the kitchen early in the morning. Dorothy tries to snap her out of it, but Rose is still upset over apparently losing Fernando. Sophia passes through the kitchen, telling Dorothy she’s off to have breakfast with Alvin. They’ve become inseparable. After she leaves, Blanche comes in with a teddy -- not Fernando, but Rose appreciates her effort. As Rose also leaves, Blanche confesses to Dorothy about giving Fernando to Daisy. The Sunshine Cadet has also shown her true colors: She’s holding Fernando for ransom -- even sending Blanche one of his ears.
ROSE: I’m sorry, I know I’m behaving like a fool. But I’ve got a right to sing the blues. I lost my teddy. DOROTHY: I understand, Rose. Which, if I thought about it, says something deeply disturbing about me. *aside* “I’ve got a right to sing the blues”...?
On the boardwalk, Sophia and Alvin are having a ball making fun of the other elderly beachgoers. Sophia starts talking about her late husband, Salvador, saying that he hated the beach while she has always loved it. Alvin doesn’t remember her mentioning Sal before. Sophia asks him if his late wife, Edna, like the beach. Alvin seems distracted, avoiding the question and talking about the birds. Sophia persists in asking about Edna, and Alvin can only repeat her name in confusion. Suddenly he starts to cry, and Sophia, while confused herself, holds him and lets him cry on her shoulder.
Back at the house, Blanche and Dorothy attempt to negotiate with Daisy for Fernando’s release. She quickly reveals that she knows Blanche gave her the bear by mistake, and tells them that she’ll only give him back in exchange for an expensive Schwinn bike. Dorothy and Blanche are shocked -- Dorothy attempts to intimidate her, which fails. Daisy threatens Fernando with an inked-up water pistol when Rose walks in. When she realizes Rose doesn’t know what’s going on, Daisy slinks out with Fernando, still with the pistol to his head. Blanche tells Rose the truth, and they attempt to cajole her into letting Fernando go, but Rose coldly tells them to get her bear back.
ROSE: Hi everybody. BLANCHE: Rose, don’t move, honey! She’s got the teddy bear and water pistol! ROSE: What? DOROTHY: Rose, it won’t sound any less ridiculous if you hear it again.
The next day on the boardwalk, Sophia waves Alvin over while crocheting a scarf. He immediately becomes hostile when he sees she’s sitting on his side of the bench. Confused, Sophia moves, but Alvin continues to yell at her before storming off. Back at the house, Sophia and Rose meet up in the kitchen. Sophia tells Rose what happened and how confused and upset she is. Rose tells Sophia how she’s depressed over Fernando (whom Sophia mistakes for one of Rose’s boyfriends). The doorbell rings, and Rose goes into the living room while Sophia continues to crochet Alvin’s scarf.
Blanche answers the door: It’s Daisy with Fernando. At first it seems she’s being reasonable, but then says she’ll take a cash payment instead. Blanche is ready to fold when Rose surprises them. She stops Blanche and says she’s giving up on getting Fernando back. She gives an impassioned speech about how sometimes you have to accept what life throws at you, no matter how unfair it seems. She turns Daisy around to face the door, and proceeds to show her just how little her threats actually matter:
youtube
The next day, on the boardwalk, Sophia sees Alvin again. He’s cheerful and friendly again, and seems to have no memory of the day before. They resume their friendly bickering. A short way away, Dorothy is watching them when she’s approached by another woman: Alvin’s daughter, Sandra. She tells Dorothy about how much Alvin’s brightened by the friendship, but eventually lets it slip that her father is sick and not getting better. Later that night, Dorothy enters Sophia’s room, saying she has some news about Alvin. Sophia says she could tell something wasn’t right, and Dorothy has to break the bad news to her: Alvin has Alzheimer’s Disease.
Sophia is speechless, and Dorothy tells her that Sandra has had to take a leave of absence from her job to care for Alvin, but they can’t afford that anymore. They’re sending him to New York to get special treatment in a few months. Sophia, saddened, tells Dorothy that sometimes life can really suck. She’ll spend the few months before he goes finishing his scarf. A few months later, Dorothy finds Sophia sitting alone on the boardwalk, wistfully realizing she’ll never see Alvin again. She’s finished his scarf and plans to mail it to him. As they walk off, Sophia shoos an old man away from the now-empty bench, saying, “Someone’s sitting there.”
“That gentleman just peed in the ocean.”
For the second time in a row, the first episode of The Golden Girls returns with a Very Special Episode. And were this any other show in the world, I might cringe at starting off a season with such a sad episode. But not only is this episode a fantastic showcase of Estelle Getty’s talents and Sophia as character, it’s also got a great B-plot to balance it out. Again, were this any other show in the world, balancing a story about a complex, tragic illness with a story about a bratty child holding a teddy bear for ransom might be well-nigh impossible, but this show somehow manages to make it work -- spectacularly so.
ROSE: Alvin from the boardwalk? SOPHIA: No, Rose, Alvin from The Chipmunks.
Sophia the character has been slowing working her way forward the entirety of the first two seasons. At first, she was just supposed to be a recurring side character, not as important as the three characters played by more (at the time) well-known actresses. But this transformation has finally reached full bloom as Estelle Getty shows just how how extraordinary this character really is -- and how much she, as an actress, brings to the table. Poor Sophia goes through the wringer this episode, going from happy to have made a new friend to confused and hurt by his erratic behavior, and then shocked and sad when told the news. And Estelle makes you feel every part of that.
This is also one of the episodes where you get a glimpse at what’s going on behind Sophia’s armor of wit and acidity, along with hints that she uses humor as a coping mechanism when she’s upset. When Dorothy comes to her with the bad news, she at first tries to deflect with humor, then says she might be better off not knowing before finally admitting that she knew something was wrong with Alvin. When Dorothy tells her about his disease, she gives a short speech about the unfairness of the situation, and “you need a reason to get up in the morning” no matter how long and happy a life you’ve lived.
SOPHIA: *gesturing to empty bench* Someone sitting here? ALVIN: Cataracts or glaucoma?
This might be the first time since the first season’s “The Heart Attack” that Sophia has shown a softer side. In the mid-episode A-plot/B-plot collision, she briefly snaps at Rose when the latter asks an inane question, as per usual, only to immediately apologize and confess that she’s unhappy. I won’t get into it too much -- if only because I will cry and this episode will never be published -- but this episode is even more deeply affecting if you know about Estelle Getty’s own struggles with dementia later in her life.
Joe Seneca as Alvin is also one of the more memorable guest stars, as he reenacts the behavior of someone stricken by the terrible disease. Full disclosure, while I haven’t known anyone who’s had Alzheimer’s, I have known some with dementia, and his performance is close to what I remember. The scenes where it’s not visibly affecting him, where you get a glimpse of the wonderful person he truly is and what a good friend Sophia could have had, makes it hurt even more. Janet MacLachlan as his daughter Sandra also does a great job with her single scene of dialogue, foreshadowing the reveal and even talking up how good Sophia’s friendship is for Alvin.
youtube
Phew, the A-plot is an emotional roller coaster... The B-plot is not only equally memorable, but provides all the giggles that the A-plot lacks by necessity. It even ends with one of the most badass moments in the entire series: Rose giving a bratty child a much-needed shove. I’m not for laying hands on children, but I am about corrective action when a youngster is being too much. And Rose just showed the child that all the youthful edginess in world means nothing if you have no literal weight to throw around.
The absurdity of Blanche and Dorothy getting into a hostage situation over a teddy bear is pointed out numerous times, with even Rose being a bit baffled by it. Rose acts a little more maudlin than necessary when she thinks she’s lost Fernando, but I completely understand her upset when she finds out Blanche gave him away. The story is wrapped up a bit too early, leaving Rose and Blanche to have a one-off short scene in the kitchen to wrap up their part of the episode after the B-plot wraps up. But it’s otherwise well-timed and has perfectly spaced jokes.
BLANCHE: So that's when this salesman from Men's Sportswear walks clear across the store into Ladies’ Petite and says, "Uh excuse me, miss, but I noticed you've been having a hard time deciding between the turquoise strapless and the flaming red backless. Well, personally, I would prefer to see you in the backless." And I said, "When?" And he said, "How 'bout Saturday night?" And I said, "How 'bout in your dreams, sleaze-o!" Can you believe the nerve of that guy? ROSE: . . . what were you doing in Ladies’ Petite?
Jenny Lewis as Daisy is another great guest star . . . wow, this episode is just the most, isn’t it? She comes across so cheery, almost to the point of satire, in the opening scene, and we later find out that’s by design. She’s actually a hardened troublemaker with a loaded pistol of red ink at the ready. That makes it extra good when she gets her comeuppance. Though I do have one question: Are we to infer she took Fernando deliberately? All she was told was that Rose’s contribution to the rummage sale was on her bed, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Fernando was there also. But it also wouldn’t be out of character for her to have taken a prized possession with the goal of holding it over their heads later.
If I have one criticism of this episode, it’s that the writers couldn’t resist throwing in a crass, unnecessary joke based on Alvin’s race. Earlier, Sophia said, “You Black?” to Alvin, and that was funny because it was the punchline to Sophia touting the success of her cataract surgery. But the part where Sophia makes a veiled reference to “Black men in the bedroom” just felt crude. Not to mention Sophia once again uses a slur for people with dwarfism when Rose shows her Fernando’s little overalls (presumably a reference to Dr. Newman from “A Little Romance”).
Episode rating: 🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰 (five cheesecake slices out of five)
Favorite part of the episode:
I’m absolutely spoiled for choice in this episode in regards to the best moments. While I laugh the hardest at Rose’s blunt “dismissal” of Daisy, I think Estelle Getty’s performance in the penultimate scene is one of the best pieces of acting in the show’s entire run -- and Bea Arthur as a scene partner is no slouch either.

DEXTER SEASON THREE SENTENCE STARTERS (PART ONE)
Lines taken from s03e01 - s03-e08 of the show Dexter. Feel free to change pronouns or edit in any way to better fit your needs. Here is part two.
❛ Everything's falling into place for the first time in my life. ❜
❛ Ay, ay, come here! Don't walk away all "fuck you" on me! ❜
❛ I guess your dick can suck itself from now on! ❜
❛ You don't get to blow me off and still ask questions. ❜
❛ Just hold me till you have to go. ❜
❛ If you need something for that temper I've got a man down the street with some really mellow weed that can take that edge right off. ❜
❛ Blood never lies. ❜
❛ Look on the bright side: Now that you've given up men, booze and cigarettes, running your mouth is the only bad habit you have left. ❜
❛ I'm a model of fucking perfection. ❜
❛ You certainly did not suffer from the tragedy of perfection. ❜
❛ All I want is chocolate pudding, and you - not necessarily in that order. ❜
❛ Kind of a cunt, aren't you? ❜
❛ You should stay. Grab a drink and work some of that massive tension out on the dance floor. ❜
❛ Maybe you should be a little less subtle in the future. ❜
❛ Some people just shouldn't have kids, you know? ❜
❛ The leaders of tomorrow. Their parents must be proud. ❜
❛ I've made a lot of mistakes in my life but being a mother was never one of them. ❜
❛ This child is happening. But your role in its life is entirely up to you. ❜
❛ Just when you think you've answered all the questions, another one smacks you in the face. ❜
❛ Life is just like that. Which is why I prefer death. ❜
❛ I didn't know what to do. I fought back. The knife ended up in his neck. ❜
❛ There's a lot more cannibalism in this country than any of you realize. ❜
❛ A baby? A motherfucking roly-poly, chubby-cheeked shit-machine? Are you kidding me? ❜
❛ I don't know what's more complicated, having a father or being one. ❜
❛ Showing up late at night like this, is it creepy, or just what friends do? ❜
❛ Having a conversation with you can be dangerous to one's health. ❜
❛ This is absolutely, without a doubt, the worst moment of my life. ❜
❛ I could probably kill her before anyone realized what happened. ❜
❛ I'm sorry. I just don't want to hurt you. ❜
❛ You got a lot of potential in you. Sometimes I think that you are the only one who doesn't know that. ❜
❛ People don't get married because it makes sense. ❜
❛ How do you show someone real love when you don't even know what it feels like? ❜
❛ I like the sound of the quid. What's the pro quo? ❜
❛ I know that trust doesn't come too easy to you. ❜
❛ My life has always felt like... an unanswered question. ❜
❛ You're what makes me real. ❜
❛ There are many ways to stop the heart. Electric shock. Bad diet. Sever the aorta - my personal favorite. ❜
❛ Your life is gonna change forever. ❜
❛ Every man needs his privacy. Some more than others. ❜
❛ Right on time. You're getting pretty good at this secret meeting stuff. ❜
❛ I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to do my job. ❜
❛ Thank the baby fucking Jesus. ❜
❛ Maybe I'm realizing no one around here is my friend. ❜
❛ The only time you people even acknowledge me is when you want something. ❜
❛ "No" doesn't really work in a relationship. "Can we talk about it?" is a little more productive. ❜
❛ I can't just drop everything at the last minute because you want me to. ❜
❛ That's not opinion. That's science. And science is one cold-hearted bitch with a 14-inch strap-on. ❜
❛ You think you and I are so different, don't you? ❜
❛ I'm nothing like you. ❜
❛ I'm here now. And I'm not going anywhere. ❜
❛ You can't make me feel any worse than I already do. ❜
❛ You don't have to lie to me. Don't you understand? I see who you are. ❜
❛ You have nothing to explain to me. Nothing to apologize for. Ever. ❜
❛ I'm with you. I'm behind you. And I respect you. ❜
❛ What did it feel like to, uh... take him out, hmm? To end his life. ❜
❛ Together, we can make a difference. ❜
❛ He's seen me with blood on my hands and hasn't blinked. ❜
❛ Every time you let someone get close, it ends badly. ❜
❛ Can you imagine the shitstorm this is gonna create if I'm wrong? ❜
❛ Aw. You do care about me. ❜
❛ This asshole doesn't deserve to breathe, okay? ❜
❛ That's beyond dangerous. That's crazy! ❜
❛ We both have too much to lose. We should quit while we're ahead. ❜
❛ Can I throw something at you that might sound a little crazy? ❜
❛ Can't ignore something just cause it's messy. ❜
❛ What the fuck makes you think I'm suddenly willing to play now? ❜
❛ Hard to believe even you would sink that low. ❜
❛ Be careful what you think you know about someone. You're probably wrong. ❜
❛ We're living in crucial times, crucial times that demand extraordinary measures. ❜
❛ If you're gonna bail out of this, now would be a good time. ❜
❛ Mark my words, he'll give you up in a heartbeat to save his own ass. ❜
❛ We only see two things in people... what we wanna see and what they wanna show us. ❜
❛ Never underestimate the capacity of other people to let you down. ❜
❛ You can make this stop right now... if you tell me where he is. ❜
❛ You scared the fuckmother out of me. ❜
❛ You can't imagine how much I've been looking forward to this. ❜
❛ Death will be a mercy. ❜
❛ You stay the hell away from me! ❜
❛ It is kind of illegal. ❜
❛ So what I'm about to ask you is...the most terrible thing anyone could– ❜
❛ What's so important you had to see me at the ass-crack of dawn? ❜
❛ Am I being set up? ❜
❛ Just shoot me if I ever get like that. ❜
❛ Hand-holding. So simple. So intimate. So...uncomfortable. ❜
❛ I'm so sorry for putting you in that horrible position. ❜
❛ Asking you to violate your conscience was one of the worst things I've ever done. ❜
❛ I had a high opinion of you. Guess I was wrong. ❜
❛ Now he can't even be civil in front of company. ❜
❛ I never should have said anything. ❜
❛ I've never been great at conflict resolution. Not without a blade and several rolls of plastic wrap. ❜
❛ How much caffeine have you had? ❜
❛ That conscience I don't have? It's been eating away at me. ❜
❛ Only an idiot would ask for a meeting here. ❜
❛ I am not good at this. Letting people help me. ❜
❛ We're not gonna man-hug, are we? ❜
❛ I'm doing a good thing, aren't I? Then why does it feel so bad? ❜
❛ It's said that everything is connected to everything. The butterfly effect. ❜
❛ I don't want you to kill him. I wanna do it. ❜
❛ Last time I got into your car, your radio was tuned to marching music. ❜
❛ Is this the beginning of a whole new level of friendship? Is it the end of life as I know it? ❜
❛ Relationships are complicated. ❜
❛ Number one rule of the code is "don't get caught". ❜
❛ Is it a mix-up, or is [name] fucking with me? ❜
❛ I just heard a love song on the radio that reminded me of you. And it made me really angry. ❜
❛ You say anything more about my brother and I will kick your fucking nuts down your throat. ❜
❛ Jesus Christ, do you know what kind of a bonehead mistake that is? ❜
❛ You can stop this right now. Call it off. ❜
❛ You don't get to have friends. Nothing good can come out of this. ❜
❛ We can't exactly load up the cart with axes and machetes, now can we? ❜
❛ You ever drop a quart of milk? Watch it spread over the whole kitchen floor, the mess it makes? There's six quarts of blood in the human body. This isn't gonna be pretty. ❜
❛ There's no shame in backing out. ❜
❛ My god, you just get dumber every day. How do you survive in this world? ❜
❛ Yeah, of course, I'm making excuses. Don't you? I mean, how else do you sleep at night? ❜
❛ You never should have asked me to help you. ❜
❛ That was the first time in my life that I've ever felt...powerful…like I was in control of ❜ something. And ever since then, I've been trying to get that feeling back again. ❜
❛ So when you talk to me about...the darkness inside of you...I understand. I really do. ❜
❛ Thank you for this. For letting me in. For showing me the way. ❜
❛ You've set something in motion here. ❜
❛ It's like I have this monster living inside of me, and I don't know how to control it. ❜

Dadrius Misses His Son
Posted on AO3 Here
Spoilers for S03E01 Thanks to Them!!!
Summary:
Little drabble about Darius missing and worried about his son while dealing with the apocalypse. Then they share a sad hug. Hunter needs more hugs.
                                       ------------------------------------------
The day of unity came much quicker than Darius had wanted. They had worked out a plan at least, even had the owl lady on their side. They had one shot to get this right, and everyone was putting everything on the line to stop it.
The cruel reality of the matter was that it wasn’t enough.
The coven heads were all crouched in pain from the draining spell. Darius had the petty thought of ‘I told you so’ ready to spit at the others heads who had been to stupid to see. Those that refused to see past Belos’ lies, and see the monster he was.
Though, he couldn’t really blame them. Deep down he could understand why they wanted to just believe the lies. Wanted to stay blind to the reality of their situation. Wanted to believe the false emperor was a kind soul, not a wicked dictator that spent his free time abusing his nephew.
Darius’ brain was fuzzy. He could faintly hear the noises around him. People talking, cursing Belos, crying in pain. The CATTs had failed. Which meant Belos had won. Darius had been looking forward to rubbing it in Belos’ face, but had truthfully doubted their success in the first place.
A small voice was begging him to wake up. The little prince wanted him to be alright. Darius tried to just move to make the boy feel a little better, but not even his eyes listened to him. Just to open, and tell Hunter that it was going to be alright. Which would be a lie, but Hunter suffered enough already, he didn’t need to face this alone.
Darius should be protecting him, not the other way around. Darius needed to get Hunter to safety, to keep the boy from anymore harm. Hunter was a child, he shouldn’t dealing with any of this. He should be worrying about his silly little friends of his or to much homework.
Darius couldn’t even will his consciousness to stay.
He wasn’t expecting to wake up again. Wasn’t expecting the world to be in a somewhat worse state than it had been before. Some child-like being had taken over. If the world was bad before it was downright awful now. The boiling isles was at the whim of a child's chaotic tendencies. The worst part was the child acted as if it were all a game to them. Like their lives, their world was just a simple pastime, which to him, they probably were.
The rebel team stayed together- unfortunately still going by CATTs even though there was no longer a throne to overthrow. They weren’t even sure if Belos was still alive.Yet, they were still trying to figure out how to fix this mess, if possible. They always tried, even if there was little chance of success. It was all they ever could do.
The Owl Lady was worried about her human Luz, worried about where the human kid and her demon dog had gone. It was a lie to say Darius wasn’t worried about a certain blonde boy too. He hadn’t heard from Hunter since the day of unity. It was a high possibility Belos had gotten to him, or this new Collector kid.
Darius hated to think about the possibilities. The boy had lived through so much, he didn’t deserve to die young on top of it. He had a life ahead of himself, if the CATTs ever managed to fix the world. If there was even a way to fix the world. Darius had to keep going, because there was no way the stubborn child had died. The boy was too good at surviving, and Darius was going to be sure this world was a place Hunter could grow up in.  Though he had little hope the boy's stubbornness would be enough, as Darius had witnessed countless times the Collector just simply achieved an impossible task at the bat of his eye.
Darius' hope was shattered when they found a big eyed demon dog alone hiding. King had been with Luz, the human, and Hunter had been with Luz. Finding the creature alone could only mean one thing, and it wasn’t a reality Darius thought he could face.
King explained to Edalyn what happened. How the Collector had killed Belos- which Dairus had been hoping to do himself, but good riddance. How the children went into the portal to the human realm. About how Hunter was far far away from any danger this world had to offer. How Hunter was still alive and breathing and safe. How Hunter was in a place not as chaotic as this, where nothing could hurt him.
The relief that flooded him was an unfamiliar feeling. The joy of knowing the angry brat had survived. Of course he had, it was Hunter, but it was so nice to have an actual source saying the kid was fine. Even better, he was with his friends, away from this mess.
Eberworld scurried up to Daius’ shoulder and gave a happy hum. Sharing the relief of his friend.
“How did you survive?” Eda asked King, she had hugged him when he first showed up and refused to put him down now.
“My collar-” King had to pry his collar out from beneath the strong hug of the owl lady. “I think my dad left this symbol to protect me.” He explained as he showed off the collar the best he could from Edas grasp. “The Collect can’t see me when I have it on.”
That was when they started drawing that symbol on their bases, and on everyone's person, somewhere. It wasn’t a guaranteed safety but it was some sort of protection. They still had to be careful of noises, shadows, and other things the kid was getting more accustomed to looking for. The Collector knew that something made things invisible, and was determined to find King.
Being able to picture Hunter happy in the human realm made the task of survival bearable. Whenever Darius started to feel like it was all pointless, he’d just think of that stupid little tooth missing grin being able to just exist with his friends. To experience life how a child should. Exploring the human realm with Luz, the human, who would know everything about her own realm. The thoughts would pick Darius’ spirits back up just enough to get whatever he needed to get done done.
Yet, he still didn’t know if they could fix the boiling isles. They had the most powerful witches on their side and were still struggling. How do you stop a child from playing when they have all the power in the universe?
He could only hope they’d figure out a way before the kids returned from the human realm. They knew it was bound to happen. Eda talked about how stubborn her kid was, and Dairus knew how stubborn Hunter was. It was only a matter of time before the children returned to help. It was silly how the children thought they needed to. They thought they needed to protect everyone else, when they were just kids that should only be worrying about getting detention at Hexside, not that Heside was still around right now. The school was probably still in the world somewhere.
They did not figure it out before the children returned.
It was evening, probably. The Collector could just play with time as they wished. So, it wasn’t easy to tell the time accurately anymore. If the child wanted it to be earlier, they simply moved the sun to make it earlier. Which shouldn’t be such a simple task. It shouldn’t have caught Darius off guard the first time it happened, with how easily this Collector played with their lives.
The group was setting up camp. They had to keep moving if they wanted to solve anything, besides it wasn’t safe to stay in one place for too long. Even if they were technically invisible to the star child, evidence of life could catch attention they did not need.
Raine was the first to notice something. “We’ve got survivors.” They said gesturing ahead to where a group of figures were darting around hiding from sight.
“Let’s hope they’re hospitable.” Darius scoffed, not bothering to look long. It was pathetic how some people reverted to hostile ways if they thought it was the end of the world. People should band together in these times, not take advantages for their own self.
He almost didn’t catch Edas quiet whisper of disbelief.
      “Luz?”
He whipped his head back to the children, and sure enough there was the human leading the way. They didn’t have any protection symbols on them, which meant they didn’t know about it and if the Collector happened to be around here-
Before Darius could even mention it, Eda was over there in her harpy form. She was giving the kids the extras they had, in case they stumbled upon survivors that needed them.
The human hugged Eda in a similar manner that Eda had hugged King when he first showed up.
Darius was thankful to see a human adult with them. Probably powerless but at least they had someone looking after them. He kept an eye on her as he approached, wondering if she was a good protector or not.
It didn’t take long for Darius’ attention to shift, looking for the little prince. His eyes rested on a blonde boy covered in scars. New scars. The boy barely gave him a nervous glance before looking back to Eda and the human, who was explaining where they had been. Darius hadn’t been listening anyway.
“What happened?” He asked, trying hard not to sound angry, but these were new nasty scars. Whoever did this was going to die. Why had he been so foolish to think Hunter would be safe in the human realm.
Hunter’s eyes shot wide, and he started to clutch his arms. He was shaking and refused to look Darius’ way.
Darius had to force himself to calm down. He didn’t want to scare Hunter, he just was so angry. Why was it the boy escaped Belos only to be hurt by something else. He didn’t deserve that. No one deserves anything the boy has been through.
“Hunter.” He said- calmish- which was a great feat for a man so royally pissed off. “Who did this to you.” he breathed out trying very hard to keep his voice gentle for Hunter.
“Belos.” Was the quick short answer Hunter gave. Not daring to look up at Darius. Like he was afraid, or ashamed.
Belos was supposed to be dead.
     Why couldn’t he stay dead.
“I’m murdering him.” Dariuds declared, but Raine put a hand on his shoulder, grounding him a bit. Darius shot them an annoyed glance but Raine only nodded their head back to Hunter. Hunter, who was hugging himself, not daring to look at Darius. Hunter who was holding back tears, and breathing too frantically.
      The bird was gone.
     Hunter’s bird was gone.
The boy loved that little red bird. Darius knew that with the amount of pictures Hunter had sent of that little palisman.
Darius leaned down and embraced the boy in a hug. He wasn’t really a hugging person, but Hunter was Hunter, and Hunter needed a hug. Darius also needed this hug.
The boy didn’t seem to know how to react, only slowly hugged him back. Then he started to cling harder, not letting go.
“Where’s your palisman?” Darius whispered softly, already knowing the answer.
“I-He-” Hunter inhaled sharply. “He’s dead.”
Belos was going to be ripped limb from limb with abomination goop. Dairus was personally going to be sure Belos would die this time, and there would be no coming back from the awful things Darius wanted to do to that man.
“It’s a long story.” The girl who was friends with Hunter explained. Darius couldn’t recall her name, but he knew she was the one with powerful plant magic.
“I’ll want all the details.” Darius declared, not daring to release the blonde boy who was crying from his grip. He wasn’t ever going to let Hunter go again. He was going to keep him away from that monster that only seemed to keep hurting him. He was going to keep him safe.
“He-He’ Hunter tried to start but only remained buried in Darius' cloak hiding his face.
“Later.” Darius patted the boy's head. “I’ll have the details later.” He could only squeeze him tighter.

My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s S03E01 (“New World Map”)
(Safe to read for anime-only folks.)
My thoughts after watching Season Three, Episode One:
01. The first two lines we ever hear in this season, THIS season, is Senku saying, "This scenery takes me back. I'm absolutely bawling" while he and the others are flying to Ishigami Village. Which I'm SURE is a direct reference to when he stood over Byakuya's grave, said "this takes me back," and cried the very first tear we've ever seen Senku shed... at his father's, Ishigami Byakuya's, grave :') Very, very well-done already, and it's only been two lines so far! :O
02. Chrome is NOT willing to let Ryusui have his village, haha! XD
03. I know Senku was looking to the side probably because he rope helped him navigate the balloon downwards, and stuff... but Chrome tossed the rope to Kohaku, so he should be looking somewhere in her direction, and I'm gonna choose to believe he was looking right at her! :D
04. The production quality in this first scene is top-notch! And of course we're getting a short clips show :) It's pretty cool to see what Ryusui was doing right before he was petrified! :O
05. The kids and adults are so excited to see Senku! :) He even has a hand on a little girl's head, and he's smiling; aww! :D And another little girl asked him to play, AND he said agreed! That is so sweet! :) I HAVE to remember this for my fanfic! :D
06. Apparently, "Come. We'll show you around Ishigami Village," is Kohaku code for, "Come, I'm going to give you a walking tour of why Senku's so awesome" XD
07. He has a globe in his laboratory... that's a nice detail! Something else I can use in my fanfic! :)
08. Ryusui teleported from the laboratory to the shed of science XD
09. What's Ginro holding in his right hand? Is it a tool for smoothing the wood? :O
10. A ship building team and an oil searching team, both working towards the goal of sailing and finding out the truth behind the petrification! :)
11. I must say, I'm not feeling the opening song of Dr. Stone: New World. It's too fast for me, and it doesn't help that I don't know the English translation of the lyrics yet, so it doesn't have any personal meaning for me, although of course I like seeing my favorite characters, and certain new characters that will be introduced later on in the season :) ...Well, except that big hat guy. I know his name, but I don't like him... -_-
12. The second-to-the-last shot of the OP is really nice. At the end of the previous seasons' three OPs, Senku was always, always alone. But in this season's OP, he's with so many people - Suika, Kohaku, Ukyo, Kinro, Ginro, Gen, Nikki, Ryusui, Francois, Kaseki, Yuzuriha, Chrome, Yo, and Taiju. He really, truly isn't alone anymore - he has friends by his side :)
13. Ah, the title of the first episode of Season Three... New World Map! :) And the title is on paper now! :D
14. It is so cool that they have enough metal now that they can use some of it on things that aren't vital to their scientific goals, but are just little things that make life a bit better, like those metal food covers! :)
15. Ryusui... what you're imagining ain't what you're getting... XD
16. Grilled fish, grilled fish soup, grilled fish salad, grilled fish desert, grilled fish... something XD Small fishes inside big fishes! :O
17. Small detail, but I like that Senku addresses Jasper and Turquoise by name :) I suppose it's too bad that they... WEREN'T attacked? XD
18. Ryusui is SO determined to find food! XD Poor guy... And Senku's being quite encouraging! :D
19. Kohaku! ^_^ Kohaku's flying!! Yay! :D She's so happy and thrilled! AND prepared; she has her sword and new shield on her even though she's hanging from a hot-air balloon! :O
20. Senku casually said she should stop freaking out like a child, but he looks pleased AND he called her "lioness!" Ah, it's been WAY too long... :) Kohaku noticed, too! :D
21. Finally, a shot with just Senku and Kohaku! They're talking about the possibility of finding oil :)
22. I wonder why that forest stood out to Kohaku? She's seen a lot of forests, and even on the hot-air balloon, she would have seen bunch of trees already. Maybe cedar is rare for the villagers? Or maybe something about how the trees looked made her think they were noteworthy or useful? :O
23. High-quality animation AND new graphics - they're really showing what they've got in this first episode! :D
24. First, Kohaku and Chrome worked as a team to find the cedar forest, and then Ryusui and Ukyo worked as a team to find that feral goat herd. And the way he showed genuine respect and care to that goat was so Ukyo :)
25. But... are they supposed to let the blood out in the water like that? I thought you weren't supposed to do that because the bacteria would go into the water and negatively affect the fish there... or maybe that's just for guts and innards and stuff, but not blood? Or maybe that's just when it comes to fish? Don't know... :O
26. Sigh, Senku writing and Kohaku pointing, with Chrome and Ukyo and Ryusui, making a map of the new world together... :) It's so nice to see this in detail and color! :D
27. The villagers were impressed by the map! :) Although, Ryusui, you could have been more tactful; I'm sure the villagers would have also liked more variety in their diet... -_-
28. This is the second time we've seen that particular elderly woman show her relief that nobody will starve to death anymore... poor woman... :( And something I hadn't considered was that anime lends room for empathy when it comes to voices. Turquoise said pretty much the same thing to the world woman, but it seemed more dismissive/annoyed to me in the manga and more empathetic in the anime :)
29. Ah, so the village was a lot bigger before Kohaku was born, but a lack of food one year meant a lot of people died, including Turquoise's family... :(
30. Uh, this "plants enslaving humanity" angle is new to me... XD
31. Oh, Kohaku might not know about currency yet, haha! Oooh, she found golden foxtail... or wheat! :D
32. They're going to their own food, by themselves! :)
33. Slash, slash, slash, goes Kohaku on the golden foxtail, just like she did on the green foxtail! :D
34. I love how Kohaku's hopping easily with at eight bundles of wheat, Chrome is carrying two with one arm, and Senku is using both his arms but is still struggling and walking slower than Chrome with just one bundle XD
35. I really like that they included Kohaku's special attack move question AND animated it a bit! :D
36. Kohaku seriously just loves to, like, all-out brag about Senku and/or science XD She did it in Season One with Kokuyou; in Season Two with Hyoga; and this season with Ryusui earlier AND with Nikki, Yuzuriha, Magma, Taiju, Gen, and Ginro now XD
37. Awesome detail that Yo's farm sign has writing and Magma's farm sign has a sketch of his face :D And even though they're rivals, they seem to be pals too, taking breaks in the afternoon and resting at night together like that :)
38. Yuzuriha has insight into why Taiju is the way he is; Taiju talked about his past... :) And I really like that Gen had his head bowed in honor of Taiju's words :) Also, about the petrification... uh... um... what about the- wait, actually, note to self: talk about this thing in the future when it won't be as spoilery XD
39. Taiju's farm looks so green and plentiful, and Yo and Magma's farms... have a few sprouts? XD Very cool that Taiju remembered what Senku said about seashells all the way from the first part of Season One :D
40. Senku looks proud and happy that Taiju remembered his words, and Magma and Yo look proud and happy that their farms prospered after they did what Taiju did! :)
41. And even though the latter two aren't thrilled about it, they're still in the crowd that gives Taiju the straw hat of the farming/food king! :D I like that Taiju bent his head so that Yuzuriha could put it on him, like he really was being crowned :)
42. Even Senku acknowledged Taiju as the food king! :D
43. Whoa, a couple of seasons passed and the wheat ripened, just like that! :O
44. Also not feeling this ending song, although I do appreciate that there are some English lines. Are the circle thingies related to chemistry, and elements and protons and electrons and stuff? And maybe I'll like it more if I understand the lyrics; I should look them up! :)
45. Sigh, I dislike the lack of Kohaku in the ED, but I do understand, the five wise generals and all that :D
46. Ooh, they have an brick baking oven now! :) Senku's clearly unprofessionally baked bread looks like... that... but Kohaku genuinely likes that it's like a rock and has a fun, crumbly texture :D (Or... stone? Haha! XD) And Chrome and Turquoise and the elderly man who believed in Senku in Season Two like the burnt bread as well! :)
47. Ah, so Ukyo learned that about food in the Self-Defense Force survival exercises... :O And Yo, you do NOT need to be jealous... XD
48. Senku and Ryusui are united in their resolve: They MUST revive a professional chef! :D
49. So ends the first episode about Dr. Stone's Age of Discovery! :) A triumphant arrival in Ishigami Village; reuniting with Kohaku and other old friends; making a new world map; looking for resources; the rediscovery of agriculture; the crowning of the kingdom of science's food king; a bread baking experiment that was very successful for some but not successful at all for others... and a new goal for the latest required skill set for the kingdom of science! :D
50. I'm so glad that I'm finally watching Season Three - my own goal is to finish watching all the available episodes before the second part of the season starts airing in October 2023! :)

proof 101 that william byers is an unreliable narrator.
To celebrate the release of the Jonwill script I wanted to write my own opinions.
The part I want to discuss is the following:
Tumblr media
Will, baby, who said that those two were flirting? Are we watching the same scene?
Tumblr media
Here Mike is just acting as any of my fellow Italians: blasphemous is the right word my dudes. But lmao, besides this, it's clear that the meaning behind it is that Mike likes his comfort zone.
This explains also the previous sequence, where Mike was holding hands with El*ven: keeping the facade.
I'm not going to focus on this because, Will wasn't looking, but when Mike tries out the glasses covered in the pizza carton, he's trying to be funny, exaggerately funny, out of place funny, and it gives off the same vibes of when he started singing the song in S03E01 during the makeout sequence.
He's forcing it and why? He's uncomfortable, the facade is cracking.
But what Will sees it's Argyle and El*ven trying to spoon-feed Mike with pizza.
Tumblr media
Like, they're messing around, joking, it's not flirting. 🤌🏼
It's not that their relationship is going well either, indeed, that funny moment happened because of Argyle who's the most effortlessly funny person ever.
Instead, when Mike was trying to make El*ven laugh, it all felt so forced.
Will is watching the scene with the lenses of his insecurities.
A famous saying says: you see just what you want to see, therefore, Will he just sees himself as "wrong" and his love as "unrequited" and his friend's relationship as blossoming
But when we see the world through Mike's lenses we see Will soaked in angelic lights.
It's all relative, Will sees them flirting because the only healthy relationship he was exposed to, was his mom's with Bob, where they were goofy together, and to Will this is the same.
And by seeing this, his idea that Mike&El*ven's relationship is beautiful and flawless is reinforced.

704 The One With Rachel's Assistant
I don't know how they do this, their kiss is the lightest of touches and the moan comes from the back of the throat like a happy hum (and when Ross and Rachel making the kissing noise every single time they kiss or Janice and Chandler that one time they do it (when they're trying to be domestic in S03E01), I want to gag because they're trying too hard to have chemistry). It's that "trying too hard to have chemistry and showing that we're no longer hot together because we're domestic" thing. Where Ross and Rachel overcompensating because their relationship is clearly lacking which would be annoying enough, but they're doing it in front of their single, depressed, and lonely friends, which is just cruel. But the light touch of Chandler and Monica's lips and the way she smiles at him and the little moans in the backs of their throat is just so sexy because it isn't forced. They come into that kiss, knowing it's coming, there's no surprise or suddenness to it, but the moan isn't fake, it's a short communication of understanding and support rather than manufactured to tell the audience they're married now and not sexy. I just find this kiss very hot.
