Mystery Monday #22: Ending Outros
The title may sound redundant, but today we are looking deeper into four unique outros: the three storybook endings of the first two seasons and the first half of season 3, and the final outro in The Hardest Thing.
Reunion
This one has pictures of two of the most significant moments of the season: Sprig finding Anne, and Anne fighting Bog, followed by a new picture of the family sitting on the hill outside Wartwood and looking at the stars. Notably absent is her fight with Sasha, but that happened minutes earlier in the episode, and this credits sequence seems to be a season recap meant to remind you of the early significant moments.
The music is pretty much the same as the normal end credits. I can't help but feel like they slowed it down a bit, but the video I watched showed that it lasted the same amount of time as the normal sequence. I guess it is a bit quieter, to signify that the fun, mostly one-off season 1 in the bog was over and the show would be expanding its scope soon.
True Colors
The sequence again shows three pictures, with two significant moments and one fun one: Sprig playing his fiddle on the f'wagon, Anne running up to hug Marcy outside Newtopia, and the final group picture after the Battle of the Bands.
The music again felt different than the normal credits sequence, but turns out it was the same but quieter. And they did wait an extra second on the still of Sprig playing his fiddle before starting. As the final picture came on screen, though, the music became even quieter, to match the somber tone as we left Amphibia behind for the next half season.
Froggy Little Christmas
Honestly, this is my favorite credits sequence of the whole show. (Not counting The Hardest Thing because there's really no way to compare the two.) There is so much packed into this one little clip.
Three pictures again. This time, all were new, showing how the family celebrated Christmas. Each person's gift was something unique to them:
Anne got her present from Sprig the night before: a handmade action figure of her, "because you're my hero". (I know that one's not in the credits but I'm including it anyway)
Mrs. Boonchuy got the sparkly butterfly that Pearl gave Anne back in Hopping Mall.
Polly got a NARF gun, referencing her love of weapons.
Sprig got a Tarantulad action figure, referencing both his love of action figures and his enjoyment of that movie in Spider-Sprig.
Hop Pop's is a little hard to see, but he got a book called "How to Direct", referencing both his love of books and his new dream as of Hollywood Hop Pop.
Even Domino got a new bed: the top of Frobo's head. He doesn't seem to mind.
The only person we don't see with a present is Mr. Boonchuy. I like to think he got a new one-of-a-kind video game controller from Polly (made with help from Frobo) to replace the one Frobo destroyed. (And he did also get the candid Christmas photo he was after the whole episode)
This time the melody is the hobo's song. It was beautiful just like the episode, and a perfect fit for the ending sequence. Brilliant.
The Hardest Thing
This sequence lasts a full two minutes -- FOUR TIMES longer than any other credits sequence!!!! -- and officially features four songs and four locations:
It starts with the "Friendship theme" over a shot of Anne's statue, which is where the episode ended
Then it goes to "Marcy's theme" over the hill looking over Newtopia, where she lived with Andrias and Olivia, complete with each girl's signature weapon (Anne's tennis racket, Sasha's sword, and Marcy's crossbow)
Next, we hear "Sasha's theme" over the south Toad Tower, where she lived with Grime and the other toads, with plant life growing on and around it. (I guess Bog and Jacinda rebuilt the tower somewhere else?)
Finally, we come to "Anne's theme" (aka the end credits theme) over the Plantars' home (and by extension, her home) at night.
This is pure speculation, but I like to think the four times longer credit sequence, the four songs in it, and the four locations are a reference to the four chapters of Amphibia:
Chapter 1 in Wartwood and Frog Valley, focused on the friendship between Anne and Sprig (and the rest of the Plantars and Wartwood at large).
Chapter 2 moved across Amphibia, to Newtopia and then back and forth between Wartwood and the three temples, and starred Marcy as basically the leader of the team (after she showed up).
Chapter 3 featured Anne (and the Plantars) going to earth and basically taking a break from the action on Amphibia.
And chapter 4 showed Sasha, Anne and the Wartwood Resistance fighting back against Andrias and his frobots from the underground recreation of Wartwood constructed in the Plantars' basement.
And then the final shot. This time there are SIX things to dissect in this final shot:
There are three drinks, each in a Calamity color (and presumably belonging to the lady associated with that color)
Marcy's drink is a little further away from Anne and Sasha's drinks, referencing her family's move away from LA at the end of the show
Each drink has three ice cubes, referencing each girl's closest friends on Amphibia:
Marcy's drink has two floating ice cubes, one representing Olivia and the other representing Yunnan, plus one sunken ice cube representing Andrias
Anne's drink has three floating ice cubes, representing Hop Pop, Polly and Sprig
And Sasha's drink has one floating ice cube and two sunken ones, the floating one representing Grime and the two sunken ones representing Percy and Braddock
Anne's cup contains a bit less than the other two, which the wiki says represents her only charging her stone partway (though I think it's actually because she didn't have any sunken ice cubes to show beneath the line)
The trio apparently took a new BFFs picture on this day, and
Apparently the text on screen in the very last shot is Thai for "The end"
Thanks for reading! This is the end of our two-part series on the end credits!
