They used a new kind of currency: One where men could feel free, and at ease in a world where there were no worries, where they were kings and masters over the painted faces of their new hostesses, who -in the likewise fashion of the practices displayed by European courtiers who engaged in courtly love - who'd play the role of damsels-in-distress or lovesick women whose sole interest for days on end, would be on them and only on them until they moved on to their next knight in shining armor. It takes more than one to tango and with the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries being centuries of great political turmoil, merchants and other ambitious men (who also suffered from government restrictions that prevented them from rising to the top or enjoying the benefits of their labor) were eager to find respite in something other than sex. Sex could be available just around the corner, but a chance to forget their troubles and enter a world of beauty was something special. One of the restrictions placed on the Geishas were dress codes. Everyone here remembers the dress codes or statuary laws put in place by Edward III in the 14th century and reinforced during the Tudor Dynasty, but this is nothing compared to what the Geishas had to face. Not only could they not charge for sex (unless they bought a double permit: one that made it permissible for the okiya or tea house to receive money for it that went along with the primary one that allowed for their establishment), they could not dress flamboyantly. Courtesans could. The famous image in our heads of Geishas having this excessive hairstyle with golden pins and coronets all over the place comes from the courtesans. The Geisha predecessor would wear a wig or arrange her hair in such a fashion that makes Glorianna's hair adornments seem less excessive. She was a walking ornament. If they couldn't shut down the Geisha houses, they would attack them through other means: By hitting them where it hurts, with fashion. This subtle fight no doubt must have angered some Geisha but they soon let go of their anger. The show must go on after all, and in showbiz there is no such thing as small parts, only small actors. If the Geishas were meant to wear simple fashions and less ornamentation then so be it. This petty move made them more determined to play their part well. Geishas began to take advantage of rural farmers and merchant families necessity. Some of them began to sell away their daughters to them, considering them the lesser of two evils than the courtesans. As Geishas became increasingly popular and stood the passage of time and survived many disasters, including the 1958 anti-prostitution law in post-WWII Japan, many began to consider it a great alternative for their daughters. Indeed, some of the Geisha who married or had offspring out of wedlock, got their daughters to follow in their footsteps. Sometimes simple is better. The Geisha's chic and simpler style made them look humbler and elegant. There was an air of mystery around them. They did not need to clad themselves in expensive jewelry or show off too much colors to attract clients. Their passive and regal stance did that for them. The Yoshiwara district of the 17th century, in modern-day Tokyo, was the leading establishment in this movement. With time, they turned around and began to welcome Geishas, adopting some of their similar practices and style. Once, one of the greatest pleasure districts in Edo Japan, the fire during the latter half of the 17th century, and competing pleasure quarters (such as the Shimabara in modern day Kyoto and Shimachi in Osaka), made it necessary for this district to change some of its practices and lessen its hostility towards Geisha. With the aftermath of WWII an the 1958 anti-Prostitution law, Yoshiwara and other red-light districts became a thing of the past. Whenever they are brought up, it is only their image that is remembered, not their actual profession and its place in Geisha history. Japan's older generations however do remember them. In her biography on the history of the Geishas, Leslie Downer talks about her visit to one of these former red-light districts, where plays are performed by women who dress up as the Tayu of old. Their only true remnant is the Geisha, their once bitter rivals who still struggle to survive in an ever-changing world. Subtle Wars: Geisha vs Tayu: Yoshiwara District Fights Back ... then gives in!~ The history of the Floating/Willow World is a colorful one. For one, depending what time period you are studying, Geisha has a different meaning. Originally it was used to describe boy artists, some of them who lent their services to pleasuring older affluent men. As the courtesans became more prominent in Japanese society, they slowly came to take over this profession -especially with the government cracking down on the brothels, considering them to be immoral- and thus, Geisha came to mean female dancers and later on, female artists who specialized not only in singing and dancing, but were also experts in other artistic fields. But what about the courtesans who did not like to see some of their former colleagues take over a profession that got past the government restrictions and were soon becoming the new 'it' girls? Well ... what did Sayuri say in 'Memoirs of a Geisha'? Ah, yes. 'This small world of women.' The willow world being so fragile and filled with envy, the courtesans came to resent their new competitors. Who did these women think they were to ensnare the Samurai, the Ronin, and other men of considerable means or influence? And what was it with their ambiguous practice? How could they not be seen as prostitutes when -from the courtesans' view- they were? Brothel keepers convinced government officials to crack down on these new tea houses and set in place restrictions that would make them less popular and available. But alas! The new women of the pleasure districts were here to stay. These were women whose main focus was not only to engage in sexual liaison. They weren't competing for a one-night stand.
