academic writing is starting out w one thesis and landing somewhere totally different

#somehow I've written like 13 pages so far abt what deities and stories were absorbed into the mythology of god #that wasn't the intent it was just going to be a look at the connections between the ugaritic texts and the tanakh but well. here we are. #capstone of my entire BA being the thesis that God is made up of 2 goddesses and 2 gods. #he's slaying in a bigender manner or whatever #actually more than that bc this is just the ugaritic texts but you can find other gods that got absorbed into god from other nearby #or more ancient traditions #which to Me is very lovely and kind of poetic but that's on a personal spiritual belief note #(not the historical absorption being lovely but rather the spiritual idea that god IS every god. one that has always appealed to me)

Mad and angry at how these two joke side characters try so hard to be heteronormative but they really aren't and that's where most of their misery comes from. not all of it but most of it, like it very much keeps them in the cycle, because they seem desperate to find a happy storybook ending and this is how they think they'll find it, by trying to be like the same characters that found that happiness. its never addressed but also painfully obvious with how much they don't fit in with the other npcs dear god these characters are queer coded to hell i could write an essay (i accidentally did)

its not even like bretta and zote are straight cis characters these two are bi and aro canonically but its more to do with the gender roles they're trying to replicate, and failing. they suck at it. he is not this emotionally stoic resilient lone knight he is in fact continuously fighting his emotional pain and if you give him the right attention he will stay forever. he'll get angry that you saved him or that he needed your help because YOU dont fit in his story. she's not a forgiving accepting loving damsel in distress she can take care of herself great and will also drop you like a hat if she sees even one flaw in you. because then YOU dont fit her story either. they care so much about their stories because they reinforce the identity they think they're supposed to have but they're also so disconnected with themselves BECAUSE of these gender roles that they dont realize it makes them miserable

the biggest cause for this is that they are lonely isolated individuals and dont understand or know enough about real people so they have to go off their storybooks and it only keeps them alone. its like you have to be stubborn about saving them and staying by their side so they can get that chance to change and thats exactly what the knight does. its stubborn as hell it will save them again and again and it will fight their dumbass crushes as many times as it takes to make them realize what they're doing is painful. and bretta gets that chance, she leaves the town that isolated her and goes to find something better, most importantly she gets experience. zote gets to stay alive, which is the best thing you can do for him. because now he might get to face his pain, whereas in death he never gets to overcome it, just escape it

its also very funny that when the game pushes them together in this fake relationship its purposely depicted as completely ridiculous and an obvious parody and you also have the chance to beat it to the ground multiple times. whereas the two more meaningful love stories that you get to help happen are mlm and wlw and completely unapologetic about it this game is GAY

#not to sound like a broken record but the fact that the writers treated him like shit adds a layer to his narrative #like if he wasn’t saddled with his particular role within the restrictions of his particular universe I wonder whether he would’ve spoken #to as many sad freaks like me as he did #if he wasn’t written thru a misogynistic lens for a misogynistic audience his story may have been significantly less tragic #if he wasn’t in a story that viewed mental illness and addiction as moral failures. #if he wasn’t in a story that ultimately believed in Us vs Them and in the inherent Rightness of the nuclear family #if he wasn’t in a story that handwaved and made excuses for the abuse he suffered at the hands of his loved ones bc it was #merely a consequence of him straying from the Mission #thee singular male character that I’ll tell you is a woman and mean it in the sense that you CANNOT engage meaningfully with him without #acknowledging that his central conflicts and his defining traits and the way the fandom at large treats him are all tied up in #traditional expectations for female characters #he’s relatable if you’re a misunderstood woman and if you’re queer and if you’re a 2nd gen american #if you’ve felt lonely your whole life and if you feel like you never fit anywhere #an actually perfect character to me few others can compare #tag vomit

i see the train of thought people go through that makes them want to see tommy kill himself in the end. but i think as someone deeply invested in (often chinese) stories where it concludes with the protagonist's suicide, or at least there is an overarching debate over whether they should commit the deed, i want tommy to live. because i always want them to live! it's personally devastating every time these characters drag themselves through suffering, enduring and enduring, and have their narratives resolve with suicide; the final word is always vital to the thematics of the story, and it's so bleak when that is the ultimate answer it has to give.

not to say i reject tragedies or bad endings and want them to be more positive, the shows i have in mind that do this are very precious and valuable to me. and it's important that they conclude the way they do.

more so, i always find myself dreading a suicidal character going through with it + curious whenever these types of stories can devise some other horror. and there are other possible avenues for tommy maybe, like wandering the wastes without an end in sight for one. but everyone seems to talk about tommy's end like it's a foregone conclusion and also the only conclusion :(
