Meet the Artist: @mirshroom
Howdy! I'm Mir (she/they), a Korean American freelance artist based in Texas. I guess a flex in my artist career is me winning first place in a one- shot manga competition hosted by SHUIESHA and Tite Kubo (creator of Bleach manga) but nowadays, I like to lounge around at home with my crusty white dog and draw my favorite characters from manga and mobile games. I frequently travel around to vend at conventions so feel free to stop by and say hello if I happen to be at your local con~
Nice to meet you, Mir! She has shared some artworks they have created for you all below.

It has come to my attention that SOME OF YOU who read my last Byler post remain UNCONVINCED. So I'm gonna tack onto it this:
I'm older than fucking God and air, and I've been out and proud since 2007. Yes, I know what homophobia is, and yes, I know what queerbaiting is. I know about Supernatural and Teen Wolf and Sherlock and blahdyblahdyblah. No new ground is being covered here. I thought I made that clear in the original post, but, clearly, I did not.
I am aware of queerbaiting and homophobia, and I'm still wholeheartedly certain in Byler being canon anyway.
Okay, so there are three types of relationship I want to discuss when it comes to queerbaiting. They're all, like, "queer relationships that could have happened, but didn't".
First off, queer-coding. This isn't really a thing so much anymore, but it still crops up every once in a while. I'd argue it probably happens most with male-male relationships in family shows these days. First example that comes to mind is Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowny from Steven Universe. You can't make a relationship canon because some shitty overhead bastard overhead said no, so you get as close as you can without compromising the show. Can't make someone gay? Well, now their comedy routine is a blatant allegory for a romantic relationship. Boom-shaka-laka. This is something I don't see being a problem with regards to Stranger Things, but I want it to be there as contrast, a demonstration of one of many things queerbaiting is not. However, one could argue that, thus far, Will Byers is, canonically, queer-coded. It's pretty fucking heavily implied in the show, and the creators have confirmed it, and you're gonna be able to see it if you're not FUCKING BLIND, but word of god is not technically canon which means that interviews don't technically make something canon, blahdyblahdyblahdyblah, technicalities, Robin has been explicitly stated in the text to be queer while Will has, thus far, not, outside of good ol' Show-Don't-Tell. Of course, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can tell that that's going to change by the end of Season 5, but, hey, for what it's worth, I'm throwing this out there.
Alrighty, Thingamajingama Number Two: "Oops, I accidentally made the greatest love story known to man." AKA, a genuine, honest-to-goodness mistake. Unfortunately, we do live in a heteronormative society. Sometimes people who don't think about being gay much write a friendship that's incredibly compelling and don't even consider the possibility that it could have been read as romantic. Something something Top Gun something. This is, again, not queerbaiting. This is Steddie, this is Ronance, this is Elmax, this is your favorite flavor of non-canon ship this week, this is not Byler. The creators know DAMN well what they're doing. They've talked about it. We know this. Nothing new here.
Which brings us to the topic of discussion here. Actual queerbaiting. This usually starts out as an "accidental greatest love story", and then reacts to fan response. And when I say "reacts", I mean like a goddamn chemical reaction. Like bleach and ammonia, bitch. It's noxious and it's gonna kick your fucking ass without mercy. This is when a creator is like, "Hey, let's get our queer audience invested, but we're not actually going to give them what they want because our straight audience isn't here for that/we personally think it's gross/we don't give enough of a shit to want to research a goddamn thing to write a real gay character," blah blah blah whatever excuse they want to come up with this time.
And when you think "queerbaiting", I want you to think "bullying". Because that's what it is. It's lucrative bullying, like beating us up and taking our lunch money, but it's bullying all the same. And it's a real goddamn thing, even if people misuse the word a lot, often when they mean one of the two above, sometimes when they mean "bury your gays", which is another homophobic thing entirely that I'm not going to get into here. Queerbaiting is the thing we're focused on, and it's real, and it's bullying. And here's the reason I want you to think of it as bullying:
They
Think
It's
Funny.
They are actively making fun of us.
That's why Dean had the "Cas, get out of my ass," line in Supernatural. It's why the "Do you like boys?" line happened in Teen Wolf. It's why "Lie with me, Watson," happened in the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies. Because "It's just a joke, mate." "It was just a prank, bro." "You didn't really think it would happen, did you?" "You should see your face."
So here's probably the biggest reason I don't think it's specifically queerbaiting in this specific instance of Will Byers and Mike Wheeler.
Stranger Things has never, not once, made a gay joke. Ever.
Every single time queerness comes up, it's dead serious.
Lonnie calls Will a fag, and the show is not at all reluctant to show what a goddamn horrible person he is. And when Hopper latches onto that, it's not as "Hahah, is he gay, though?" It's because he's trying to determine a potential motive for Will's disappearance, and even if someone had interpreted it as a joke, Joyce immediately has a line that functions as snapping her fingers in front of the audience's face and yelling "FOCUS" when she says "He's MISSING." Basically outright saying "This isn't funny!"
Troy calls him a fairy, along with targeting Lucas and Dustin for their skin color and disability respectively, and Mike gets damn near murderous. Troy is portrayed as a goddamn monster and the show portrays it as justice when El makes him piss his pants and later breaks his arm.
Steve calls Jonathan "queer" as a slur and gets the shit beat out of him for it.
Billy's father is revealed to be homophobic and abusive in the same breath.
Mike says "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" and we're shown how devastated Will is and Mike immediately follows him to beg for forgiveness.
There is a joke in Robin's coming-out scene, but it's not at Robin's expense. It's at Steve's. Specifically for being heteronormative.
Jonathan has multiple scenes where he's trying so hard to tell Will that he's always going to love him as he is, whether he's gay or not, without pressuring him to come out before he's ready.
Even when there's a little bit of ribbing at Robin's expense, it's always because she's an awkward nerd who's nervous around pretty girls, just the same as Lucas and Dustin are teased when they both first develop crushes on Max, and even then, even then, it always comes as a package deal where they make fun of Steve's girl problems at the same time.
Stranger Things is an emphatically pro-gay show. It may not be the core point of the show the way it is in, say, Our Flag Means Death, but there is nothing less than respect for its queer characters. Its queer characters are always taken completely seriously. No one is making fun of us. They never have. That's why I have serious doubts that this is queerbaiting. It would come completely out of left field for the bullying to start in Stranger Things' final season.
So it's not at all likely to be queerbaiting because queerness is taken completely seriously. The creators have talked about Will's queerness, at least, so it's not an accident. And queer-coding would be silly to expect from this show when it's already on its final season. Like, what is Netflix gonna do? Cancel it? Not to mention all the explicit queerness that's in there already. And no one's gonna "What about the children?" a show that's had sex scenes in it since the first season.
There's no fakeout here. It's gonna happen. Breathe.

Best Things I Have Bought
I'm not sure how successful I will be in remembering all of it, but I'll try. These have all been game-changers for me, in a variety of ways. If teen me had had access to all of these, I would have been a vastly happier person.
This one is long, so I'll put in a cut.
-outlet timers. Not having to go around and manually turn off lamps at bedtime? Amazing. I bought these but you can and should get some that have a grounded outlet with three prongs so you can attach good extension cords to them.
-famotidine. aka Pepcid, it's the safest option I currently know of for managing acid reflux. I get nauseated when I get acid reflux, so this is a necessity for me.
-T-Gel shampoo. The only one that keeps my husband's insane dandruff under control. Coal tar shampoos smell peculiar, but are totally worth it if they work. For my hair, I like anti-dandruff conditioner--I apply it to my scalp and my other conditioners to the length of my hair. After bleaching my hair, I use Olaplex 3 to prevent more severe damage; the difference is very noticeable.
-white vinegar for a laundry rinse. I get horrendous contact dermatitis and adding this in the "fabric softener" cup in my washer keeps things from making my skin burn.
-on a similar note, all Oxy laundry booster. Doesn't make my skin burn but does make stains and smells noticeably better than detergent alone.
-Aquaphor. If you have eczema, nothing helps like Aquaphor, unless it's hydrocortisone ointment (the same white petrolatum base as Aquaphor but with hydrocortisone) or a prescribed steroid.
-Bissell Stomp 'N' Go pads. I have stomped. The stain goes.
-Prune puree. A packet a day keeps the chronic constipation at bay. Less volume to consume than prune juice and, in my opinion, slightly more palatable.
-Chinotto is a bitters-based beverage that I discovered by accident really helps my chronic nausea. I've tried other brands, and San Pellegrino is definitely my favorite. Tastes weird at first, but when heavy-duty ginger ale doesn't ease it, Chinotto can. And when that doesn't work, I have Zofran (ondansetron) my doctor prescribed me for the nausea I get with migraines, and that's an effective anti-nausea agent for more than just migraines.
-"You Just Need to Lose Weight (And 19 Others Myths About Fat People)" by Aubrey Gordon.
-rolling laundry cart. Doesn't have to be this one but if you CAN roll your laundry to and fro from the machines, do it.
-"Why Does He Do That? Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men" by Lundy Bancroft. If you Google, you can usually find a free pdf floating around.
-"The Vagina Bible," by Dr. Jen Gunter.
-satin scrunchies. Wet Brush. Terry cloth lined shower cap. AOA terry cloth hair turban (way, way better than similar ones from drugstore).
-stretchy work pants.
-bra liners. For large-chested people who tend to get sweaty underboob, this is a life-saver.
-Goo Gone.
-Dr. Scholls medicated foot powder and the Earth Therapeutics tea tree oil foot spray. The foot powder works for super long days and the spray for lighter days.
-Reflective heat pad. I use this on my car seat in the winter and I am so happy for that every single chilly morning. I've repurchased it... once or twice? now.
-Retin-A. I used to use Differin, which is adapalene, the most potent retinoid available over the counter, but the switch to prescription-only Retin-A has been very noticeable. Decreased wrinkles, clearer skin. More inclined to flake and burn but it's worth it for me.
-Red LED therapy. Near-infrared stimulates collagen production in the skin. The only other thing that really does that is retinoids. I bought the Omnilux mask, which is certainly high-end, but HotandFlashy (a YouTube content creator) did a great comparison of different masks available by specs and this was the best at the time. The difference is noticeable within days. I've tried other, lower-powered masks, but what made me make the jump to high-end was that I got the Dennis Gross red LED eye mask for crows' feet off eBay and I was like "holy shit, this is better." And Omnilux is better still. It makes sense, since they were the OG of the models that have been in dermatology clinics for a couple of decades now.
-AOA foundation has been at least as good at my TooFaced foundation, and it's like 1-2 bucks instead of 40. There are light, medium, and deep shades, each on different pages; I'm linking to light because that's what I use. The lightest shade works for me, and I'm basically translucent.
-AOA VitaGlow tinted moisturizer is absolutely my go-to for lighter coverage days.
-AOA PawPaw blending sponges. Best out there and also the cheapest.
-(do not buy any of the AOA eyeshadows. Total waste of time, zero pigment. I've tried repeatedly and they're just garbage. The highlights are generally fine though.)
-Direct acid foot peels. The calluses come off. Just don't do it when you have ANY open wound on the feet, because it's acid and will sting like hell.
-blendercleanser solid cleanser for blending sponges and brushes. Actually a) gets them clean and b) rinses out.
-PureWine wine wands. I let these puppies sit for three minutes in a glass and suddenly I can drink red wine without migraines or hangovers. Fucking miraculous.
-Dustbuster. Holy shit it's amazing for ADHD peeps. Small thing bugging you? Can't get yourself to bust out the "real" vacuum? USE THIS.
-Crocs. Don't @ me. I wear a black pair around the house and for garden chores and they make my feet happy. Salonpas patches and/or BenGay for a topical when you're sore--topicals are great pain relief.
-Vibrating neck pillow. Don't need it right now? Wait until your next head cold. Vibration clears sinuses.
-PooPourri. I love not having to smell poop. This, and similar products, work pretty well by trapping scent particles in the oil layer instead of letting them evaporate into the air.
-Electric snow thrower. I can't manage a large, heavy snow blower and I don't want to deal with a gas engine. This little guy helped me clear my large driveway in 3-4 hours instead of 12.
-The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, by Carl Sagan.
-Handheld home IPL for hair removal. I ordered this exact one and I like it. You can get these on eBay or Amazon for cheaper sometimes; just make sure you PROTECT YOUR EYES during flashes. Targets pigment in the hair bulb so lighter skin and darker hair work better, and deeper skin tones may burn.
-Lanolin chapstick. Makes all other chapsticks I've used look like garbage.
-Steam eye masks. ShopMissA sells these and you can find them on a lot sites; shouldn't cost more than about a dollar per mask. I ended up buying an electric eye mask because I wanted to treat my dry eye and that just felt more environmentally responsible, but I love falling asleep with these on and I can't do that with my plug-in mask.
I think this is where I'll leave it--I've gone back quite a ways in my shopping history across multiple sites and thought about my daily routines--but if any of these problems torture you, these are my suggestions.

I am still kind of confused about what the "canon" is regarding Loki in Avengers: To me, the movie depicts a Loki who has been tortured and is not himself. But has the MCU officically changed its decision on this? Is it "canon" that Loki became "evil"? Are there any public statements regarding this? It's been 84 years and this is still messy to me
i mean good question. nice titanic reference.
but honestly? i don't give a fuckingmonkeybollock what marvel says these days. avengers LOKI canon was established by the creators and the film itself at the time of the film's production and screening, and nothing anyone says about it now can retcon that... that's just not how time works.
and certainly not some colossal stack of steaming rat turds like the disney plus series.
marvel can pry the original intended phase one and two mcu canon from my bleached white finger bones.

BLEACH TYBW Anime Cour 2 Booklet: Behind the Scenes [Translation - Part 1]
Translated by @reikorun
Director's Note × Author's Eye
We pick out several points from all 13 episodes (#14 ~ #26) of the second cour. For each point, pay attention to the explanations by Director Tomohisa Taguchi and the perspective of the original creator and general supervisor, Tite Kubo!
Section 1
Start with Yhwach again
1. A baby being held. As that being, raised up by countless hands, grows and opens its eyes, cour 2 "The Separation" begins. (ep. #14)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
"Let's place the focus on the Sternritter for the second cour", from the early stages, this is what was decided among the staff. On top of that, in order to make a link with the first cour which began with Yhwach reciting the Kaiser Gesang, we thought "let's begin the sequence of events in cour 2 with him as well." In that case, that scene depicting his origin would be appropriate. In the original work, it was drawn in a manner which took a comprehensive view reminiscent of folklore, but I struggled with how to go about creating a similar impression in the anime. As a result, the visual expression became closer to an art film represented through images alone, without the use of any narration or dialogue at all.
A: Tite Kubo
From the moment I laid my eyes on the storyboard for the first time, I had a feeling that it was going to turn out really good. Regarding this scene, there were actually various changes made until we arrived at the final cut, and even the versions we didn't use were very interesting. During the dubbing session, the process of overlapping the collective "Yū, Ha, Vē, Ha" was also enjoyable to listen to.
2. In addition, there was a memorable scene where Yhwach's 'power' was portrayed through a visual representation. This is the scene where a 'shadow' extends from the throne as Yhwach falls asleep, leading to the appearance of Haschwalth. (ep. #18)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
The portrayal of that shadow was an idea I received from Kubo-sensei. In the original work, we were able to gain an insight into the power of Yhwach as well as the connection between Yhwach and Haschwalth through Haschwalth's words to Uryū, but since there was no concrete depiction in itself for the transfer of power, it lead to discussions where we considered that It would also become an element linking to the subsequent cour, so we thought “let's do that in the anime!”
A: Tite Kubo
At first, the manner in which the shadow emerged looked as if it were surging up from below, but viewing it from a choreography standpoint, I suggested that the shadow itself should appear in a sort of sliding manner, giving the impression that it had some mass to it. The transfer of power occurred while Yhwach was sleeping, so in order to preserve the nuance that the transfer to Haschwalth happened while he was in that state, I also had Haschwalth depicted standing with his eyes slightly lowered.
Tumblr media
Section 2
Storytelling
3. In the second cour of 'BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Arc', the war situation changes moment by moment due to the Sternritter invasion, and the outward appearance of the Soul Society also undergoes transformation. As a free-for-all breaks out in various places where enemies and allies intermingle in a state of chaos, the anime adds a scene where the newly appointed Captain-Commander, Kyōraku Shunsui, issues orders to each soldier. (ep. #14, #18)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
One component of that is our desire to include explanatory scenes and scenes where the narrative is refreshed so that the audience are not confused by the ever-changing situation of the war. Another component was our desire to depict the organization that is the 'Gotei 13', which includes Kyōraku who became the Captain-Commander, in a renewed light, and these components overlapped seamlessly.
As a result, I think we were able to depict his status as Captain-Commander inherited from Yamaji, as well as his work ethic. In combination with the scene depicted in the original work that evokes the essence of Kyoraku, i.e. the handing over of Soul Tickets to Tatsuki and the others in the Human World, I'm happy if we were able to successfully delve deeper into the characters.
A: Tite Kubo
It was a really nice scene with both the essence of Shunsui and the essence of a Captain-Commander coming through.
4. In addition to Kyōraku, the appearance of the other troops were added, including Vice-Captains. (ep. #16)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
While the scenario building sessions were moving forward, I realized that I also wanted to depict the Shinigami's point of view as they strive to fight back against the invasion and try to fulfill their duty to the Gotei. Rather than simply portraying the scene, we added a series of shots with the intention of showing the state of the Shinigami who remain unyielding even as the war situation worsens and they are gradually forced into a disadvantageous position.
A: Tite Kubo
Even in a fan service sense, I think the audience enjoyed being able to see a variety of characters in the anime.
5. With regard to the main character, Ichigo, extra scenes have been added, such as the manner in which he received training under Hyôsube Ichibei. (ep. #14 and others)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
As mentioned earlier, the foundational principle for the second cour is to place the main focus on the Sternritter, while that's true, 'BLEACH' is still the story of Kurosaki Ichigo, isn't it? There were some concerns that the number of episodes in which Ichigo does not appear in the anime may end up feeling longer than it was in the original work, so we came up with the idea of showing what Ichigo is doing at the present time. The knowledge that Ichigo was training at the Soul King Palace is also depicted in the manga, so I speculate that even though Kubo-sensei undoubtedly had a concept and an image in his head, perhaps he deliberately chose not to draw the specifics. We had the privilege of making suggestions and consulting with Kubo-sensei about how we would go about incorporating the event into the story; those scenes were the result. In a sense, it's to be expected, but we were able to receive a tremendous amount of material from Kubo-sensei, far more than what we expected…. It made us think, "Ichigo, that's what you were doing in such a place!?'' As a fan of the original work, I was delighted, and I also maintained the feeling that I needed to put all my effort into portraying it.
A: Tite Kubo
About the Irazu Sandō part, I didn't include it because if I tried to draw it in the manga, the scene depicting the agonizing ordeal would span across multiple pages and end up too long. I'm glad that it could be expressed in the anime~!
6. The stage upon which Ichigo undergoes his training, Irazu Sandō. A mysterious and beautiful sight, yet it is also a peculiar place where a solemn air, a stillness and a sense of awe all coexist. (ep. #14 and others)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
There's torii gates, a cobblestone pavement, shide (*zigzag-shaped paper streamers) adorning both sides…. If we hadn't received materials from Kubo-sensei, I don't think we would have been able to find our way to this point. Whilst enduring something which tries to push him away from the approach path, the more he walked, and the more he advanced, the heavier the wooden sword in Ichigo's right hand became. When he walks, he walks by moving his legs forward without letting his feet leave the ground. A lot of detailed images and ideas were provided, such as scenes of rain falling outside the path. This was then projected into anime visuals, and the Irazu Sandō came to a state of completion. I think this is a training ground packed with every element that is typical of BLEACH, down to the smallest detail, and that cannot be found in any other work. We've also incorporated an abundance of elements that will be connected to the third cour and onwards such as what happened to Ichigo during his training and the scenes he witnessed, so I would be happy if you could take another look.
A: Tite Kubo
Originally, the mental image I had was 'a sacred place, but at the same time, there is a sense that one is being cursed.' However, I thought that if I communicated this to the production team, the eeriness might end up being too pronounced, so I deliberately didn't mention it. The impression I had was that it was like an abandoned path. As a result, I think the team were able to capture that balance in the sense that it is a sacred yet potentially frightening place, and thus they were able to express it well.

Section 3
Design & Color Concepts
7. After the invasion by the Sternritter, the sky of the Seireitei was dyed red, and the squad barracks were transformed into unfamiliar, inorganic blue-white buildings. Director Taguchi's production plan is markedly reflected in those colors as well. (ep. #14)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
The main goal was to dramatically shift the setting away from Seireitei in a time of peace. Additionally, the upper part of the frame is red and the bottom is blue, which serve as completely opposite elements in terms of hue, so the aim of the production was to consider how the image could be made into something vivid. After the invasion, the Seireitei became perpetually uniform to that coloring, so there were some concerns about whether it would be acceptable as there are very few anime that employ a color scheme which breaks away from the norm to such a degree. However, we wanted to convey the might of Yhwach's power and also the sense that his power had indeed transformed the world. Furthermore, since blue is also the color of 'Quincy Reishi', I considered that perhaps this extreme staging effect in which the space itself ends up dyed in the colors of the Quincy side would make it easier for viewers to perceive the phenomenon where visually, it no longer feels like the Seireitei = the world of the Shinigami.
A: Tite Kubo
When I first received this proposal for the color scheme, I thought the expression might be too extreme, but the way Taguchi-san uses backgrounds is masterful, so I decided that I would try to leave it with him. I harbored some concern that colors of the characters may become difficult to distinguish, but that aspect was also rendered in a well balanced manner. At various points during meetings and dubbing sessions, I often get the feeling that Taguchi-san is someone who can clearly see the final visual outcome.
8. From the standpoint of color, the attire and laboratory, which Kurotsuchi Mayuri contrived as a countermeasure against the Sternritter lurking in the shadows, are also very interesting. (ep. #15 and others)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
Initially, the glowing Mayuri was only supposed to shine yellow. However, this time, Mayuri's lab itself also shines brightly, so it meant that when we tried to station him there, he ended up blending into the scenery quite a bit. While searching for a way to make Mayuri shine, an idea came from the color scheme designer Gōda-san: "How about a lighting method which shifts into a variety of colors like a gaming PC?" We adopted the idea thinking "it'll probably look great on screen!" We proposed the idea to Kubo-sensei, who readily approved, and it started to take form in the visuals. The colors continuously shifting midway through the plot is an interpretation that can only be represented in the anime, so I believe we were able to exhibit Mayuri's natural presence by using a different approach from the original work.
A: Tite Kubo
This was indeed an interesting portrayal that could only be done in the anime. It's also interesting that it was intentionally made to look like a moiré pattern. After all, this cannot be pulled off by any character other than Mayuri.
9. Mayuri's laboratory is designed to completely eliminate any shadow as a countermeasure against the Sternritter invasion. Evidently, it took a great deal of trouble to express this.
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to express 'no shadows' in the anime. The most significant factor in creating a three-dimensional effect in an illustration is the contrast of the shadows, isn't it? Given that it was necessary to reject that, we said "there is likely no other way to do this but to test an array of other patterns!" The art staff and I went through the process of trial and error a many number of times. As a result of taking into consideration various opinions that came up along the way, we translated them into the concept of 'creating gradation within the light', ultimately representing three-dimensionality.
A: Tite Kubo
When drawing it in the manga, the way I used to express the idea of 'glowing without shadows' is by erasing around the circumference of what I had drawn. I'm glad that I was able to have it portrayed in such a satisfying manner in the anime too.
10. Hirako Shinji's Bankai, "Sakashima Yokoshima Happōfusagari". A Bankai, which did not appear in the original work (※first appeared in the novelization), is made to enter the stage in the anime, therefore a great deal of enthusiasm has also been poured into its rendition. (ep. #16)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
The bud of Hirako's Bankai pedestal is formed by the petals narrowing inward when open, retaining their form to become the bud, however I thought that if we produced it with cel animation, the petals would inevitably lose their shape, rather, there's a high possibility that it wouldn't look like a rigid object. So, in order to show the precise movement of a rigid object, we deliberately used CG. At first, what I imagined for the texture was a brass-like luster, similar to the lotus flowers used in Buddhist altar fittings. We struggled while attempting to express the feeling of that material and searched for ways to depict it using CG surface reference / textures and such.
11. Many characters have made their Bankai debut in the original series. Ōtoribashi Rōjūrō's "Kinshara Butōdan", and Humanized Komamura Sajin's "Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō: Dangai Jōe" were also portrayed by utilizing 3DCG technology. (ep. #18, #17)
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
I think 'Kinshara Butōdan' managed to incorporate a finely tuned quality that doesn't look like it was made with cels, having said that, nor does it overly emphasize CG elements, rather it strikes a delicate balance between the two. Similarly, "Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō: Dangai Jōe" was also developed in 3D, I think we were able to well execute the way the gigantic body moves freely and abundantly as opposed to the challenges of producing it with cel animation, which is susceptible to making the movement appear choppy. In the story, there are various Bankai, but in terms of compatibility with 3DCG, rather than the type where it's just the sword changing, it's my opinion that Bankai transformations where the appearance changes completely or another entity emerges, is the kind that fits better from a direction perspective. As mentioned earlier, expressing it in 3D has the effect of altering the feel, so you can stress the distinctness and change in atmosphere brought about by performing Bankai. In a certain way, I suppose it's possible to convey a stronger sense of harnessing something that is not of this world. Therefore, from now on, I intend to continue requesting (to those in the field), that one doesn't adopt a cel animation look completely.
A: Tite Kubo
Both were really good. As Taguchi-san also mentioned, I wanted to avoid having the CG elements coming to the forefront in an odd manner. I think CG shines particularly during Bankai transformations that feature inorganic matter. The CG was skillfully utilized, especially in critical moments where traditional animation eventually tends to falter, like when Myō'ō comes in with a slashing attack, for instance, making it quite impressive to watch.
12. 3DCG is not the only technique utilized for showcasing Bankai. The skills of various staff members have also been brought together.
D: Tomohisa Taguchi
Even though I understood the principle behind it, figuring out how to visually represent Muguruma Kensei's Bankai "Tekken Tachikaze" in the anime, among other things, was challenging because how we'd go about expressing that is a different story. While the blades remain in contact with the target, it continues to explode infinitely. It creates the illusion that the punches being thrown are repeatedly landing tens of thousands of times without the arm ever being pulled back from the point of impact, doesn't it? We worked strenuously to express how immense the power of Kensei's Bankai is by doing things like deliberately adding cel style motion blur to make it look as though the opponent was being hit, aiming for a visual effect that makes it seem like he's trembling after being struck multiple times, and using an approach where we incorporated sound effects reminiscent of a drill used in road construction. In terms of his character and Bankai visualization, Rōjūrō is likened to an Opera, implementing theatrical staging such as the rapidly changing movement of his conductor's baton and the lighting. The music attached to the scene also became particularly important, director of audiography Nagasaki-san and re-recording mixer Hoshino-san fine-tuned it masterfully.

Ichigo and Orihime's Relationship Analysis
Ichihime is both an extremely popular pairing in the Bleach fandom but also a very controversial one, as the rival ship, IchiRuki, is just as popular. As a result, the community was divided over the decision to pair them together and for Rukia to be paired with Renji. Nonetheless, it appeared that creator Tite Kubo had planned for these romantic outcomes from the start.
Ichigo and Orihime's relationship makes sense because they share a deep bond that developed over time. Orihime's unwavering support and understanding complement Ichigo's personality, creating a connection based on mutual trust.
Their Relationship
Tumblr media
Orihime had first met Ichigo under tragic circumstances, as she took her severely injured brother to a clinic that Ichigo’s father owned and watched him die there. By the time they started high school, Orihime had already developed an interest in Ichigo and was even teased for this by her best friend, Tatsuki, who was also friends with him. She would sometimes fantasize about him in comedic ways. Their relationship is often very sincere and wholesome. Ichigo is normally quick to annoy and can be seen arguing with others, but when it comes to Orihime, he is much kinder and gentler.
He is even indulging of her silly nature and will act comical with her from time to time. Ichigo showed no apparent feelings for her, but became flustered and stated she was perhaps showing a bit too much when she wore revealing clothing in front of him, unaware that she only did so to attract his attention.
Orihime's Confession
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orihime is very kind to Ichigo but can be submissive to her own feelings for him. She feels very jealous due to Ichigo’s close friendship with Rukia, and admitted this to Rangiku who comforted her about her feelings.
Orihime's confession to a sleeping Ichigo in Bleach is an important moment in the series. This happens during the Hueco Mundo arc when Orihime, feeling a sense of despair and the weight of her past trauma, decides to express her feelings for Ichigo.
Orihime's character carries the emotional burden of losing her older brother, Sora, and her past experiences with bullying. This trauma had an impact on her personality and emotional well-being. Her confession to Ichigo reflects her vulnerability and the deep emotional struggles she faces. Choosing to confess while Ichigo is asleep shows Orihime's internal conflicts and hesitancy to face the potential consequences of her feelings.
Orihime struggles with feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem, likely stemming from her past experiences with bullying. This could have hindered her confidence to openly express her romantic feelings to Ichigo. Orihime is highly perceptive of Ichigo's emotions and priorities. She might have been aware of his complex and challenging battles, understanding that expressing her romantic feelings could create additional emotional burden for him.
Ichigo's Love for Orihime
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ichigo's feelings in Bleach are often portrayed through subtle actions and expressions rather than explicit blushing. Some subtle hints to Ichigo's feelings for certain characters, like Orihime, include:
Protective Instincts: Ichigo consistently shows a strong desire to protect those he cares about, especially Orihime. This protective nature can be interpreted as a sign of deeper feelings.
Emotional Concern: Ichigo demonstrates genuine concern for Orihime's well-being. His emotional responses to her struggles and moments of vulnerability suggest a connection that goes beyond friendship.
Prioritizing Her Safety: In critical situations, Ichigo often prioritizes Orihime's safety, indicating a special place she holds in his life.
Facial Expressions: While Ichigo may not blush overtly, subtle changes in his facial expressions during certain interactions, particularly with Orihime, can hint at underlying emotions.
Shared Silences: Sometimes, the absence of words between Ichigo and Orihime speaks volumes. Their shared silences and meaningful glances contribute to the subtlety of their relationship.
These subtle hints collectively build a narrative of Ichigo's feelings without relying on traditional blushing cues, making his emotions more nuanced in the context of their relationship.
Hueco Mundo Arc
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout the story, particularly during the Hueco Mundo arc and beyond, there are numerous instances that imply Ichigo's growing affection for Orihime. His actions, protective instincts, and emotional responses towards her suggest a deeper connection that evolves beyond friendship.
Orihime's fear of Ichigo's Hollow side during the Hueco Mundo arc is a poignant moment in Bleach, but there are valid reasons to defend the portrayal of this her shock. Orihime's fear is a realistic emotional response to witnessing Ichigo's transformation into his Hollow form. The Hollow side represents a powerful and menacing force, and Orihime's fear is a natural reaction to the sudden change in Ichigo.
Ichigo's Hollow mask symbolizes the darker, more primal aspects of his nature. Orihime's initial fear and later acceptance of this mask symbolize her understanding and acceptance of all facets of Ichigo, even the ones he considers monstrous.
Resonance and Connection
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The concept of resonance is a recurring theme in Bleach, particularly in relation to Ichigo and Orihime's connection. Their souls resonate with each other, symbolizing their deep emotional bond and shared experiences. This resonance serves as a driving force in their relationship, allowing them to understand and support each other on a profound level.
Resonance also implies an understanding that goes beyond verbal communication. Ichigo and Orihime often comprehend each other's feelings and thoughts without the need for explicit expression, showcasing an intuitive connection.
In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc of Bleach, the relationship between Ichigo and Orihime undergoes significant developments amidst the intense battles and heightened stakes. As the Quincies threaten the Soul Society, Ichigo's protective instincts come to the forefront, and Orihime stands by his side, unwavering in her support. Orihime's steadfast commitment to Ichigo is evident as she provides support during the challenging battles. Ichigo, in turn, draws strength from Orihime's presence, showcasing the depth of their connection.
Happily Ever After
Tumblr media
In the final chapter of Bleach, the envisioned future for Ichigo and Orihime comes to fruition, depicting a significant shift in their lives. Orihime, no longer alone, finds comfort and companionship with Ichigo by her side. Ichigo, once characterized by a degree of cynicism, has undergone a positive transformation, reflecting personal growth and a more open-hearted demeanor.
This concluding chapter provides a glimpse into the peaceful and fulfilling life that Ichigo and Orihime have built together. The challenges and conflicts from earlier arcs have given way to the quiet joys of family life. The presence of their son Kazui not only signifies the continuation of their lineage but also shows the love that define the Kurosaki family. Ultimately, the final chapter serves as a heartwarming conclusion to Ichigo and Orihime's journey, showcasing their growth as individuals and as a couple.

Tumblr media
Thank you for the eye bleach oh great anon <3
Vark, I see being the size of jawbone and the same kinda species (Shark dog thing-) (From fools gold by THIS CREATOR GO CHECK HER OUT GUYS) So safe to say dealing with him is a....a hassle to say the least! Vox and you would be Chasing him around for HOURS, god help you if he got one of voxs wires or shoes! Vox would try and cage him in, then Vark would just run underneath him, knocking your poor boyfriend on his ass. After any zoomies that Vark would have, he'd come up and cuddle with you, Vox would sit down on the couch next to you, out of breathe and kiss you on the cheek thanking you profusely for helping him! If you were just dog sitting, he'd come back attempt to pick up Vark(and fail) and ask in the typical pet owner way "Were you good for Daddy while he was gone??? Oooh! Yes you were!" And then walk over kissing you and insisting you stay for the rest of the day! To be in a relationship with this man, You need to like his Shark.

My 2000s/2010s kid medias wisdom:
Azula deserved a redemption arc and Ty Lee is the girl who got shafted by not being Zuko's love interest
The Soul Society is a military state and Ichigo was a good person for never joining it and Orihime was the best Bleach character
Sasuke was right and Kishimito made him an extremist as ableist victim blaming propaganda and Sakura and Hinata are equally good
Ben 10,including the sequels,is better than Danny Phantom
Flynn Ryder was a creep and a dickhead who didn't deserve Rapunzel
Hiccup was trans but so was Astrid,only transfem instead
Teen Titans is a beyond good show but the influence it's had on DC's comics is bad and Young Justice Animated should've never existed
The Hunger Games and Chronicles of Narnia derserve better than to be grouped in with Harry Potter because Thg is an anti-bigotry story rather than liberal bs and you can actually pull 'Death of the Author' with the problematic elements of Tcon because C.S Lewis is actually dead
Adventure Time is an almost perfect show and so're it's comics and sequel miniseries' and you can't pull 'It's bad because it got too serious in later seasons!!!' as a fact because that was the point,that it was trying to be different from most kids cartoons and it not being your thing dosen't mean it's not good writing
Winx Club,W.i.t.c.h,Totally Spies,The Powerpuff Girls,Kim Possible and MLP are feminist even if they have their flaws and they're brought in a girly packaging because they're meant to be heroes for little girls
Johnny Test is fine and y'all are weird fow visceral your reaction to it was
Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped the ball by having Percy end up with Annabeth because they're 'destined to' since the point of Percy's story is that he never gets to choose what they actually want and they should've either ended up with Rachel or stayed single to work on character development and healing,Luke never actually cared about other demigods and was only using them as ammo against the gods because if he actually cared he wouldn't have abused them,Toa should've instead been a third Percy series of them destroying Olympus' corruption because they've had enough of the gods and replacing it with an actual good societal system and Percy is a super cool autistic Team Parent who'd be femme and kidcore if Rick bothered to develop their interests
Star Vs The Forces of Evil should've made trans Marco and autistic Star canon,endgamed them with Tom and Janna instead of eachother,made Jackie an mc and done none of that 'no magic' shit
Gravity Falls,We Bare Bears and Undertale/Deltarune's icon status are well-deserved
Craig of the Creek only gets ignored because it's a black show that's good
And She Ra and the Princesses of Power is called cringe nonstop because it's fanbase is largely wlw and trans women who're loud and proud with their queerness and the creator at the time of it's airing identified as a nonbinary lesbian and people hate female queerness while hyping up male kinds that play into stereotypes(Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf,Magnus and Alec from The Mortal Instruments,the Shiro/Keith discourse,the Boyfriends Webtoon,Marauder's Era even being a thing,etc.Note that i am not calling Stevenson female but rather saying he knows what lesbophobic experiences are)

today i'm just wrangling all my weird loose ends and crackpot theories. Stuff that doesn't actually have enough evidence to support it, or that I just personally headcanon or that just doesnt go anywhere or come back again often enough to really derive any meaning or implications from. stuff i can't really justify making individual posts on, so im making a post about how unpostable they are collectively
warning: long, also warning: nonsense
Tumblr media
So we know Bleach operates on a loose variation of the Buddhist samsara/rinne, the wheel of reincarnation, in which souls cycle through many lives in different forms, experiences hardships in life and the pain of loss and death continuously until/unless they can achieve enlightenment, as the first Buddha did, and in doing so escape the cycle of death and rebirth, ascending to a higher state of being in which life and death no longer apply. In traditional art of Buddhist cosmology this is represented by the Buddha being present off to one corner, literally physically outside the elaborate illustration of the wheel and its many facets(itself encompassed by the demon mara). This Buddha role is the figure the Spirit King occupies in the hierarchy of the Bleach cosmology, but there are a few little orbital details that are clearly related to that role, but as I stated in the preface to all this, never really go anywhere....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there's this thing in Hinduism and by some association Buddhism (although it plays more into Hinduism's actual faith in the mythology of their gods, where as a lot of Buddhism may still invoke the divine but ultimately is about undermining and escaping the authority of said cosmological structure) called the Hiranygagarbha[हिरण्यगर्भः] "The Golden Womb"/"Golden Egg," or "Universal Womb"/"Primeval Womb," and is associated with various gods described as Svayambhu[स्वयम्भू] "Self Born," many of which are some variation on a/the creation god --effectively it's just the explanation that while everything comes from something, the original something had to have come from nothing, or else there's just an infinite number of questions that theologians would be forced to come up with infinite answers for.
But it posits that while something may have come from nothing, that something still had to follow certain understood notions of cause and effect, like incubation and birth. Ergo the creator god didn't just blink into existence fully formed, he was "born" from the nothing and as the first and initially only thing to exist he birthed himself. In these myths he is frequently described as initially existing either "beyond" or without senses --obviously the without senses bit mirror's YHWACH's origin, but to exist not without a capacity to see, hear, feel, etc... but in a place or state in which those senses cannot perceive also echo's Aizen's rambling about power levels as he rapidly ascends toward godhood before being beaten surpassed by Ichigo.
But beyond creation myths the Golden Egg is evoked in some elements of meditation in which each person, in their innate capacity for enlightenment and this divinity, has within them their own egg, and to retreat into that egg and explore the potential to self actualized as a mental act of birthing an ideal self, has overt parallels with Bleach's use of an inner world in which the zanpakutou spirit, a reflection of the self and of a potential for power, dwells.
Tumblr media
Incidentally the egg also facilitates the creation of the world itself, one half of the discarded shell from the god's birth becoming the realm of the material and the other half becoming the realm of the celestial, and as per some rants I've been on before, between it and some questions about how zanpakutou really work, it reminds me very distinctly of a few other anime/manga where a god spirit's aura or range of influence, for which a lesser spirit's would normally sustain a single person, encompasses a domain in which the totality of other people's existences reside.
In addition the egg itself, a concept called Purusha that is at times a god and at times a concept, is in some myth the creator god in question in relation to the Golden Egg, born from said egg, and then thru their dismemberment by other gods, the world is molded. So obviously some pretty overt, if superficial similarities with the Spirit Kings lack of limbs and, yeah sure if we want to acknowledge it, the LN's feeble additions to lore.
But as a concept it represents self-awareness in the idea that there is a kind of Platonic ideal of the perfect awareness of everything that is in its definitive and empirical state that has become unknowable by the division of that primordial self-awareness, but which exists in fragments in all living things.
The quartering of the body is also the basis of the 4 castes in traditional Indian society; although that dismemberment is not specific to two legs and two arms like the Spirit King's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But speaking of the spirit king's body parts, there's a neat thing going on with the design of his eyes that got weirdly ditched... In his original appearance the 4 solid black pupils were shown in top-bottom, and left-right orientation, but once he showed up again later, Kubo switched to a 4 corners sort of thing instead. At the time there was no Allmighty reveal and thus no established power of all-seeing yet, but in the eventual context of The Almighty and it manifesting in YWHACH's increased pupil count from 1 to 2 to 3, it becomes apparent that should he reach full potential he would have the same eyes as the Spirit King.
But then what capacity for all-seeing powers has the Spirit King really shown? Well, not a lot in practice, although YHWACH addresses the Spirit King as one who had at one point seen the future. But notably the original design, which had been scrapped and pushed entirely out of mind by the time any of these new contextual details were actually being written in, actually does seem to imply some faculty of all-sight in the Spirit King: The Gotei 13. Their insignia frame, which we typically see with a captain's associated squad number, is shown during an explanation of the Shihouin's Onmitsukidou, is its own symbol even without any numbers. And the insignia appears to be a stylized depiction of the Spirit King's all-seeing eye. Is the insignia itself some kind of magic sigil or artifact, or simply symbolic of a role the Gotei plays? Who can say.
Tumblr media
Let's circle back to the Golden Egg though, because the anime changed its color to blue, almost matching the color and style of the generic Quincy spirit bows/arrows. But I personally always instinctively assumed it was a kind of golden hue; something the digital colorist clearly thought as well, which was gratifying. But I also assumed the coloration was something that matched a number of other things, and with very distinct meaning: Orihime's shields, Hacchi's barriers, and the Menos Grande's Negación beams. Before the Spirit King's crystal was even an issue to deal with, there was already a very conspicuous link,
Orihime and Hacchi have the same powers of Event Rejection
Hacchi's Rejection barriers stem from his Visored powers
Hacchi's barriers thus appear to be a more refined Negación
Orihime's powers are said to tread on the authority of God
With those implications in place, it seemed evident that part of the reason for the Spirit King's inertness and imprisonment in the stasis crystal was that thru some divine power, be it his own or someone else's, the crystal exists to reject events happen around/to him to preserve him in a particular state. And since we know it didn't seem to protect him from bodily harm, there would implicitly be a more important and perhaps abstract thing in mind being actively undone.
This in turn would have provided an adequate excuse for Orihime being unable to reject the crystal being broken, and the Spirit King's injuries within it, because as we learned from Hacchi; she has to understand what she's rejecting, and those powers are most potent when aimed at the abstract (an event) and not an object (an injury). For her to reject a rejection would mean understanding the nested abstract events taking place, which frankly no one was ever brought up to speed on, whether we're talking my theories here or the actual canon of the manga. This I would have found much more acceptable than Kubo falling back on "Important character too strong, implicit functions of established powers don't work on him." Which is a bad habit Kubo has just in general; he never actually thinks out the implications of how world building on the plot he's writing, he just muscles thru it by making up new excuses, rather than going back into what he's already established to find interesting ways for preexisting abilities or factoids to interact. He very consistently fails to "yes, and..." himself.
Tumblr media
Anyway...There's also a little followup on my persistent rambling about the nature of hollows and of the elusive Vastolorde. Until the revival one-shot just a few years ago, it was easy to forget about Hell in Bleach considering it never really came into play. But there was one interesting point made that hollows who have sinned in life go the hell, while the others are purified. Most hollows implicitly are just spirits of the dead overcome by powerful emotions, but their monstrous qualities aren't considered a sin, they're an animal-like instinct. And this is addressed only barely by Zommari's indignant rant against the moral authority of the Shinigami; that the natural way if things is to let hollows exist, but the shinigami invented the morality and ethics of "protecting" humans from hollows, and "purifying" hollows with zanpakutou. And we know from the example of someone like Nel that the Arrancar process returns a kind of human intelligence and morality to a Hollow, even across the process of individual spirits becoming hollows, amassing into colony minded Gillians, and then reemerging unique personalities as Adjuchas.
Tumblr media
I still maintain the real/sensible trajectory of the Nel plot should have been that she was a Vastolorde, that Nnoitra was sent to hunt Vastolorde, but threatened by her and infuriated by her power tempered with human morality, was beat and spared but took a cheap shot to break her mask, effectively forcing her into being a mock-arrancar, like Isshin and Urahara discussed, and so Nnoitra reported back negative results on the hunt to guard his own position in the Espada. But in the face of being unable to find enough surviving Vastolorde, Aizen's plan would be to take existing mock-arrancar and have Orihime reject the event of their mask removal, so that he can remove it via the Hougyoku. In this way I think Nel could have had her generic hot-girl-ification in a more sensible and satisfying way than magic cloud of smoke de-baby-fication. I think it also would have made for a cool reveal for Orihime's uniquely abstract event rejection --as opposed to time reversal-- to mean that although the process of her transformation would be undone, her experiences post break would not, thus she'd still remember Ichigo and be able to turn on Aizen and join the goodguys accordingly.
Tumblr media
Anyway, even without all that, Nel and her goofballs, and to a lesser extent Starrk and even Ulquiorra, and sort of Harribel, all prove that the Arrancar are capable of a pretty normal moral spectrum and aren't in fact just evil or monsters all the way down. In fact, it was always kind of present since Sora's chapter way back in the beginning. In fact, Sora was the first Hollow to be drawn with the now iconic double mouth, the prior two were just monsters. Sora however showed his human mouth behind the mask, and that was a feature that would carry forward from there. In fact, at the end of chapter 25 there is also the original arrancar hook, where we see Aisslinger perform surgery on GrandFisher. But while the main event is the removal of the mask, there's also the bodily surgery taking place that suggests that what would later be identified as the mock-arrancar process involves digging the humanoid back out from under not only the mask but the hollow's inhuman, bestial body as well.
Tumblr media
This is in turn echoed when we see Wonderweiss born as an arrancar in a much cleaner process, but one not dissimilar to Grandfisher's; his wrapped hollow form, while generally humanoid --and thus implicitly a Vastolorde-- also clearly includes some large protrusions that are stripped away along with the majority of his mask. And as Uryuu relates from Urahara's briefings, the more human form also means more human intelligence. Along with the apparent moral fiber of the matter it really seems like when a hollow gets more human, it gets more human in almost all respects. (ignore that harribel bit in the image there, we'll come back to it...)
So what happens when they get the most human?
Tumblr media
I've also gone over my whole thing before that the Nelgal Ruins seemed like the natural evolution of the architecture of the menos grande, lending yet another level of humanity to the hollows: society. More over, my crackpot headcanon that in the human development of the Vastolorde they discovered religion, and comprised the first cult of YHWCH. Of note in this random line of thought is that fact that Lille Barro is considered to be the first Sternritter given a schrift. It's not clear if that means that the sternritter we know are considered contemporaries (even ignoring the confusing timeline of Juugram and Bazz-B's whole flashback) and among them Lille is the first among them, or if there have been prior generations of sternritter and Lille is as survivor of some batch of sternritter long predating the current recruiting push.
Tumblr media
But there is the question of if Lille is an arrancar or not. He somewhat conspicuously speaks Spanish, although the Sternritter do have a loosely international shtick going on in their roster. But he also has a lot of design notes in common with Starrk, although it's super unclear if that's applicable to in world logic, or just a pattern in Kubo's art. The biggest hiccup in this would perhaps be that he has no signs of a mask fragment, but then the same went for Luders Friegen. Notably Asguiro Ebern still had a mask and Luders made a point to speak down to him. While we never got any clarification on that, I think it seemed like the superiority complex came from being less arrancar-like. And I wonder if there wasn't a process by which the Wandenreich were removing mask fragments in their entirety, resulting in a kind of forced and imperfect humanization process, but from which highly humanoid and thus Quincy-fiable arrancar could be produced.
And while the shot of Harribel was obviously just fanservicey battle damage, I like to think that the plan was to convert her, and that she was in the process of having her bone armor components stripped off, not unlike the process Grandfisher and Wonderweiss underwent: it resembles Wonderweiss' in posture, but Grandfisher's in bloody tortuous overtone.
Primitive Arrancar, without the ability to gain shinigami-like powers via the hougyoku, stripped of their masks might theoretically regain human intelligence, but would lose their masks and sense of self with no way of storing it in a sword let alone being able to retrieve it. What better subjects to manipulate with the promise of a discovery of self and of identity; drink of YWHACH's blood and receive the sense of self you lack. Something to fill that hole in your heart.
Tumblr media
Then there's the thing I mentioned earlier about how there's some interesting implications about what it means to throw a bunch of spirits together into one superdense thing. And it turns out a lot of them seem to be pretty similar...
You throw shinigami souls together to make white, who is himself like an asauchi.
You throw i guess also shinigami(?) "something similar" together to get asauchi according to Oh-etsu
You throw powerful human spirits together and get the King's Key.
You throw hollows together and get a menosgrande
and if we care to dip a toe into the LN (which normally I would hesitate to do) we have at least one other zanpakutou, besides White, explicitly crafted from a menosgrande
and when the miracle baby reclaims quincy spirit power you get YWHACH
My supposition then is that the reason Vastolorde were so rare, and explicitly in hiding from Aizen, was that in the first place hunting menos is how the asauchi are created. The very first time we see a Gillian, Rukia even comments that it's the Royal Guard's job to take care of them, not regular shinigami. As the power scale of the series naturally escalates that begins to feel silly, but what if that's not because only the Royal Guard can defeat them, but because the Royal Guard and Oh-etsu in particular are uniquely suited to hunt/harvest them so they can be turned into new asauchi.
Tumblr media
And in a way, if the Spirit King is indeed locked in a meditative state in his golden egg, if indeed the god sleeps in the egg, and the egg is the center of the world, and the world is the egg. If the world itself is the Spirit King's inner world, his bankai manifesting the internal as reality, then what is YHWACH if not the Spirit King's sword spirit? In the same way YHWACH is already a part of zangetsu within Ichigo. A reflection of the self, however dark, convinced that godhood is not in the Spirit King's best interest and determined to tear him from that throne? Is that not exactly what the fused Zangetsu tried to do in stopping Ichigo from learning the final getsuga and fighting Aizen? What is YHWACH's war on soul society but the struggle between two mirrored entities over who gets to stand at the top and who has to crawl around in the shadows?
What is the difference between a king and his horse?

Pairing: Kenma Kozume x Fem!Reader
Genre: SMAU, Written Elements, Strangers to Lovers, Romance, Fluff, Humor, Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Streamer/Youtuber AU
Upcoming content creator/streamer, Y/N, has gone viral for lots of things. Her infamous dumb moments, her blended cookie recipe (which tastes better than it sounds), the way she rages at her friends during games, and about a hundred more.
But her most recent viral moment? Accidentally knocking famous streamer, Kodzuken, off the Bedwars map and making him lose his two year winning streak.
Now with more attention (and hate) than she ever asked for, her only option left is to go to the source: the man himself, Kenma Kozume.

Chapter 6 (a): Cuddle Buddies
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Word Count: 2381
You look up from your phone with confusion, eyebrows furrowed as you turn and make eye contact with Shoyo. Your features practically light up upon seeing him, a grin enveloping your face as you stand from your seat.
“Sho!” And maybe your voice is a bit too loud in the quiet atmosphere of the cafe because you can see multiple heads turn in your direction as you begin making your way towards him. But you can’t find it in yourself to care when Sho’s arms come around your waist and he lifts you from the ground as your face is buried into his neck.
“Hi Y/N.” His voice is warm in your ear, his tone full of affection for you as his grip tightens around your waist.
And suddenly you feel so silly because your eyes are watering and you’re hiding your tears against his skin in complete embarrassment. You know you’re being uncharacteristically emotional, and you’re able to realize that you’re causing a scene. But even so, it’s been so long since you’ve seen Sho that you’re incapable of holding in your emotions even if you wanted to.
Shoyo squeezes you tighter against him, most likely becoming aware of your current state of mess and trying to comfort you. Unfortunately for you though he underestimates his strength, resulting in your ribcage beginning to ache and your voice getting breathless from the lack of air.
“Okay, okay,” you manage to get out, struggling to pull away as you pat his shoulder with one hand. “You’re crushing me here, Sho.”
“Oh!” He releases you nearly instantaneously, laughing when you stumble as your feet come in contact with the ground. “Sorry, Y/N,” he rubs the back of his neck with one hand almost bashfully.
He looks so different from when you last saw him, (How long has it been? Eight months? Nine?) but his ever-lasting smile is enough to make you feel like nothing has changed at all.
You hear a throat clear, “I feel like I’m interrupting something.” Only then do you remember who you’re even supposed to be meeting in the first place. “Should I give you guys some space?” He’s teasing you, you can recognize it in his voice, but when you turn to look at the man standing awkwardly off to the side you don’t recognize the face.
But you know who he is. How could you not?
“Hi Kenma,” you greet with an enthusiastic smile. He’s different than you expected; only a couple centimeters taller than Shoyo and admittedly more good-looking than you initially would’ve anticipated.
He’s wearing a simple sweatshirt and jeans, his overgrown bleached hair tied back to (one can only assume) keep it out of his face.
And, if you’re being honest with yourself, you feel a bit overdressed.
You’d made sure to do your makeup exceptionally well today, always wanting to impress when meeting someone new. You even wore a skirt for the occasion, although - judging by both of their casual outfits - it seems that it’s entirely unnecessary .
You move forward to hug Kenma just as he reaches out with his right arm, presumably to shake your hand. You both pause, your gazes meeting as you realize the awkwardness that’s about to ensue.
You don’t let it.
“Can I give you a hug?”
Kenma’s eyes grow wide, “You want to-? Why would you-? You-.” His hand retracts, his fingers restlessly playing with the hem of his hoodie as he looks you over. “You want to hug me?” It’s only the third coherent sentence he’s said since you’ve met, but it’s a surprisingly wholesome question all things considered.
You can’t help but laugh then because he also seems to be a lot more timid than he’d ever been online.
“I’m really good at hugs,” you tell him, your arms still outstretched in his direction.
“You-,” he stops again, his head tilting as he gives you an unreadable expression. “Fine.”
You mentally cheer even as he rolls his eyes, opening his arms for you rather reluctantly as you step closer to him. You give him no chance to change his mind, practically throwing your body into his in order to wrap your arms around him.
And despite his earlier unwillingness Kenma returns your embrace with equal fervor, his hands encircling your body and pulling you into him almost roughly.
It feels odd at first, because of course it’s only natural that you’ll be uncomfortable when you hug someone who’s essentially a stranger. But then you let yourself relax against him, and end up getting a feeling reminiscent of when you hugged Shoyo just moments before.
“Happy now?” Kenma’s voice is muffled but you can still clearly understand him, enough to know that he probably wants you to let go.
You back away with a cheeky smile, “I’m never happy.”
His eyebrows furrow disbelievingly, “Well don’t you just seem like a bundle of joy.”
There's the streamer you know.
“Oh!” You suddenly remember what you’d been doing previously, anxiously looking back at where you were sitting. “Let’s go get my stuff.” You turn to make your way back to your seat, the men trailing closely behind you.
“We’re leaving already?” You hear Sho ask and you glance back at him with a confused expression.
“What do you mean?” Realization dawns on you as you’re grabbing your purse. You look at Kenma with a glare, “Did you not tell him what we’re doing?”
The plan for the day was simple; meet at the cafe, then travel from said cafe to Kenma’s house, where you would have all the time in the world to cuddle with some cats.
Kenma looks at you incredulously, “Of course I did. Right Sho?”
“Yeah. I just wanted some food first,” the shorter man laughs.
“We can grab some before we go.” Kenma suddenly raises an eyebrow, “Did you follow through with your end of the deal?”
You smirk, “Do you even have to ask?” You reach over to grab the white bakery box sitting on the table just besides your phone.
“You put it in a box?”
“Of course I put it in a box, I’m not a savage.”
You notice Kenma lean towards Shoyo as you hand him the pie, “Is it normal to put a pie in a box?”
Shoyo leans in even closer, “I have no idea.”
You lean in too, lifting a free hand to cup your mouth, “You guys suck at whispering.”
~~~
“Honey, I’m home!” You giggle as you enter the foyer, glancing back at Kenma as he lets the door fall closed behind him.
“You know I have a roommate right?” He shakes his head as he steps past you, gesturing for you both to follow him as he walks deeper into the house.
You tilt your head, “Oh you mean your ex best friend?”
He turns to look back at you with a deadpan expression, “There is something seriously wrong with you.”
Kenma suddenly stops in what appears to be the kitchen, pulling out a chair at the marble island set just a few feet across from the kitchen sink. You sit in it before he can, directing a cheeky smile in his direction, “Thanks.”
He sends you a sarcastic grin, “Oh yeah no problem. I definitely wasn’t trying to sit there or anything.”
Shoyo sits in the chair next to you while Kenma drifts slightly away to open a drawer and grabs something. Shoyo then sets his food on the counter, ripping open into his bag of chips and unfolding the wrapper of his sandwich.
Kenma takes the seat next to him, pulling the pie box towards him in order to lift the lid. You lean forward to eye him, “Are you trying to eat my homemade apple pie cold right now?”
The streamer sighs out of clear frustration, his spoon falling from his hand and falling onto the countertop with a low clang. “How am I supposed to eat it then huh? Do I have to put it back in the oven or something?”
“What?” You shake your head, “No but the microwave would do a lot.” You get up, making your way around Shoyo to grab the pie from him. “Do you have a pie slicer?”
He looks up at you expressionlessly, “You realize I eat pie every other day, right?”
“You realize I know nothing about you, right?” You sigh, rounding the island and setting it next to the kitchen sink. “Where is it?”
“In the drawer right where you’re standing.”
Well that’s convenient, you think to yourself as you step back slightly to pull open the drawer. You’re a little shocked by what you see to be honest; it’s full of cooking and baking utensils, all well organized and put in their rightful place. Thanks to this though, you’re able to find the pie slicer within only a couple seconds, setting it on the counter as you close the drawer.
You cut a relatively big slice out of the apple pie, “Where’s the plates?”
“Here,” you flinch as a glass plate is suddenly set on the counter beside you. “Sorry,” Kenma mutters when he notices your reaction, his voice so low that you almost don’t hear it.
“It’s fine,” you say in return, despite the fact that you’re still kind of shaken from his unexpected closeness.
You set the piece onto the plate, barely even having time to react before Kenma is lifting the plate and moving across the kitchen. He puts it in the microwave in almost record time, closing the door and then just standing there.
You only wait a few seconds before he abruptly looks back at you with an expectant expression. “Well? How long?”
“Oh,” right, “Fifty-two seconds.”
His eyebrows furrow, “You’re kidding.”
“I never lie about pie,” you tell him seriously. But then you sigh, rolling your eyes when he doesn’t move to start the microwave.  “Forty five seconds is too cold, fifty five seconds is too hot, and fifty-two is my lucky number.”
He looks at you like you’re insane but doesn’t argue any further, “Whatever you say.”
You turn to make eye contact with Shoyo, leaning against the counter as you fold your arms across your chest. “Do you want a piece, Sho?”
He grins at you, “Hell yeah I do.”
“Are you offering my pie to other people right in front of me?”
You shoot Kenma a look, “You mean my pie.” You straighten, “And yes. I am.”
Kenma looks at Shoyo, “You’re lucky I like you.” He pulls open a cabinet just to the right of the microwave, grabbing two more of the same white plates he’d used for himself earlier.
You plate another slice before pausing to stare at the third dish sat before you. “What’s this for?”
“My pet fish,” he answers sarcastically. “Who do you think it’s for, Y/N?”
“Well sorry I can’t read your mind,” you retort. Sure you’d had an idea of who it was for but you didn’t want to use it for yourself before he’d confirmed it.
By the time you’ve finished microwaving your own slice of pie, both Shoyo and Kenma are standing in the entranceway waiting for you. “What are we doing,” you ask, completely clueless as to why they’re standing.
“We’re planning on watching a movie,” Shoyo explains.
“Oh okay,” you grab your phone with your free hand, following behind them as they leave the room.
“You know,” you announce as you’re walking down a set of stairs, “I’m kind of surprised that we haven’t come across any cats yet.”
You see Kenma nod, “Yeah they tend to stay away from the main floor of the house; it’s colder than every other floor.”
“Even the basement?”
He looks back at you with an eyebrow raised, “I’m not some fiend that leaves my basement in negative two degrees like some people. Both Kuro’s and I’s bedrooms are down here.”
“Oh,” you suppose that makes sense.
“See look,” you all reach the end of the staircase, where Kenma pauses to point out two cats lying on the last step. “This is Mars and Dusty.”
“Oh my gosh,” you practically squeal, forgetting that two other people are currently standing on the stairs with you as you step forward. Shoyo stumbles into Kenma at the movement, to which the taller man barely manages to avoid the cats as his feet make contact with the landing.
You gasp, your hand reaching up to cover your mouth as Kenma looks up at you with wide eyes. And sure you feel bad but you’re still completely unable to hold back your laughter at his expression.
He watches you giggle, his facial features growing even more incredulous the longer you laugh. “You literally almost killed the first two cats we came across and you still want me to let you cuddle them?”
“Wait wait wait,” you panic as he reaches down and scoops up the two cats with his free hand. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be laughing I just-,” you cut yourself off with a snort, “I just was not ready for you to look at me like that.”
He shakes his head, “What the hell is wrong with you?” And while the words themselves could be considered harsh he can’t even hide his smile as he says it.
You tuck your phone into the waistband of your skirt, silently praying that it won’t fall out as you reach towards him with your free hand. “I promise I’ll be gentle,” you tell him.
He hesitates.
“Please,” you pout. And you feel completely pathetic as you do because you’re literally begging to hold a cat right now. (But - to be fair- it’s a really cute cat.)
You can see the exact moment Kenma’s resolve breaks, his shoulder’s relaxing as his expression falls.
He sighs, his head falling back to look skyward as he finally gives in, “Fine.”
“Yay!” You’re practically bouncing on your feet, your smile wide as you step down to the bottom stair and become eye level with Kenma.
“But,” he suddenly says and you pause mid-cheer, “Let’s go sit down first.”
You immediately nod, “Okay.”
You don’t care where he wants you, to be entirely honest; as long as you get to cuddle with some cats.
Spoilers for all of DRDT so far (all the way to the end of Ch.2 - Pt.1)
Tumblr media
(This is my first attempt at a character analysis, so forgive me if it's a bit messy, I'll try to fit it up later. Also my first time using tumblr, intimidating but I'll figure it out.)
-
(TW: Talks about parental death and neglect. Mentions of racism, not talked about in much depth)
---
Intro:
Whit is one of the most interesting and mysterious characters in Despair Time. Despite being so well-loved by the fandom, his character is not taken nearly as seriously as I believe he should be. Objectively, Whit has one of the most in-depth characters, which isn't talked about with how often he gets reduced to a possible love interest for Charles. I also love their relationship (and ship it as well), but compared to Charles, Whit's other traits are ignored in favor of their relationship, which is unfair with how complex Whit's character actually is. Likes his backstory for example.
Part 1 - Whit's Backstory:
Whit's backstory is still shrouded in mystery, since it's only Chapter 2, but that isn't to say we know nothing about it. During Episode 4 of Chapter 1 Whit talks about his home life. He reveals that he's an only child, and briefly mentions that he thinks having a sibling would be cool, since he could be friends with them. This will be mentioned again later in the analysis, so keep this fact in mind. He then goes on to talk about his parents. First, he talks about his father, Lin or Steve. Whit says he doesn't see him a lot since he works overseas. All Whit is able to say about him is that he's quiet. Then Whit goes to talk about his mother, Elizabeth. Whit shows actual happiness when he talks about her. He doesn't go in depth, but he does call her pretty and sophisticated. He says he even bleached his hair to be like her. He clearly admired her a lot. He finally goes on to talk about his since nobody is ever in their house for long periods of time, he couldn't have pets. His home seems decent solely based on this information, but we have gained another part of it recently. In Episode 9 of Chapter 2 (what a jump) the secrets of all the cast are finally talked about. During the trial, Whit admits his secret is, "Your mother is dead. You always omit that truth." This isn't all that surprising when you consider how Whit deals with stuff like death (which well talks about in a different section) or his secret quote, "We tend to idolize the Dead."
So that's all of Whit's backstory, right? Insert *Sore wa chigau yo!" meme here. Is it all we've seen in the story, yes, but there was a Q&A done a while back that gave us an even greater idea of Whit's past. Anon asked if Whit was Biracial. The creator said yes, since his father is Chinese and his mother is American. It's also mentioned that for the first part of Whit's life, he was raised by his mom, so he doesn't have many Chinese experiences. What is mentioned next is what I care about the most. It's said that his father was very absent from his childhood (and life in general it seems). I think this makes it safe to say that Whit probably experienced some form of neglect from his father. He could barely say anything about him, the house is so empty that he can't even have pets, the way he talks about having a sibling. His mother is dead, and his father is never around. Whit was probably a lonely kid. The idea of having a sibling could fill the void because of his basically non-existent family. Also, regarding his mother's death, I'm gonna guess it was around his teen years, though I'm not sure.
Why mention his backstory first? Because this fandom never acknowledges anything about his past besides his dead mom when we clearly have more to look at. I also think this backstory can explain a lot of Whit's actions throughout the game. Speaking of…
Part 2 - Whit's role as comic relief, and how he (and Ace) subvert the stereotype:
Whit is easily seen as comic relief by most (I hope). Comic relief is a character used to defuse tension from certain scenes in shows/movies, plays/musicals, or video games. Whit is clearly made for the role, but another character, Ace, plays (or did play) the role as well. How can they both share the same role? You see, all roles have different stereotypes that are repaired with them. Comic relief is no expectation. I would say that comic relief tends to come in two types.
Characters who take absolutely nothing seriously. The lack of seriousness can be so bad that their jokes can fully screw over the tone of a scene, or story as a whole.
Using flanderization, which is just exaggerating a certain trait (or even sometimes traits) in a character. Character traits like paranoia, anger, happiness, or even sadness will become so amplified that you, much like the story, won't be able to take them seriously.
Whit and Ace fit these two stereotypes very well. After Whit's introduction in Episode 4 of the Prologue, Teruko calls him frivolous. A word, when used as a trait, is characterized by lack of seriousness or sense, which is a fairly accurate descriptor for Whit. Ace fits the second very well. Ace is characterized as both extremely aggressive, and as an extremely large coward through the entirety of the Prologue and Chapter 1. It's hard to take either character seriously at first glance.
Yet both Whit and Ace manage to subvert the stereotype and do interesting new things while doing it.
Ace goes through (negative but natural) character development after Chapter 1. He takes on a fully aggressive persona so that he's not seen as someone that can be easily killed off, the more intimidating the better. If he's seen as all bark no bite cowards, then he'll be an easy target. The cowardness is replaced by more anger and now the anger isn't funny now since we see it negatively affecting both the rest of the cast and Ace himself. He loses the role as comic relief by going through his natural character development. He subverts the trope by getting proper development, which leads to him losing the role entirely.
Whit subverts the trope by fully admitting that he's trying to be it. In Episode 4 of Chapter 1, Whit talks about how his constant joking is just him trying to lighten the mood. Whit wants to find a way to make the others happy, or at the very least lessen the stress they have because of the current situation they're in. He does this by joking and teasing. Whit subverts the trope by admitting he's trying to be the trope.
Both Whit and Ace subvert the same trope in vastly different ways, which are both effective for both of them. This does lead me to a question. Why does Whit do this? Well…
Part 3 - Goals vs Motive, actions, and what differentiates Whit and Hu:
When discussing characters' popularity, Hu and Whit are basically opposites. Whit, as mentioned earlier during the intro, is one of the most popular characters in the DRDT fandom. Hu, on the other hand, has gained a distaste by a majority of DRDT fandom because of how she's acted during the course of Chapter 2. This is very interesting, since the two are fairly similar. This is probably surprising to many, since the two seem so, so different. Hu is a serious mom friend, while Whit is a jokester.
I won't deny their differences, but what makes them similar is actually really important. The biggest similarity between the two is their goal. "Help the others through the killing game". This goal is special to these two because while the others are all (mostly) actively trying to find a way to either get out or end the killing game. These two don't though. They don't make any active attempts to find a way to or escape like the others, or their attempts are way more subtle than everyone else. So, if they have the same goal, why do they go about it so differently? Motive. A goal is what a character wants, a motive is why your character wants to achieve their goal.
We already know Hu's motive. Her motive is feeling useful. I'll discuss it more whenever I get to making a Hu analysis, but Hu has self-worth issues, making her believe that if she isn't doing some then she is completely useless. The idea of being useless seems to scare her. The reason Hu wants to help the other through the killing game is because it will make sure she isn't useless. Her actions to achieve her goal are by giving all her love to certain people, since she's aware that she can give equal love to everyone. She'll do whatever it takes to keep those certain people safe and happy, even excusing their bad actions. She plays favorites so that there will always be someone that finds her useful.
Whit is very different in regard to motive, since we don't really know fully what it is yet. We can make assumptions, but we can't be fully sure yet. Our best answer currently is simply, nobody can. This leads me to the next section…
Part 4 - Whit's calm persona, and it's relation to his motive:
Whit likes to make others happy. Whit also likes to help others. I believe these two traits heavily influenced his persona. Whit doesn't show emotion. We've seen happiness, concern, surprise, regret, confusion, and neutrality. He legit says "Jeez" after watching Min's execution in Episode 12 of Chapter 1, which is very tame compared to the others. Then he says, and I quote, "Oops" after seeing Arei's dead body in Episode 8 of Chapter 2. That is not a normal/socially (and morally for that matter) appropriate response to a dead body. What does this mean? Well, Whit doesn't show a real hint of sadness, or what he has is a very closed off version. Why does this point matter? Well, Whit is doing what nobody in the cast can. Whit is able to be a kind while being a reasonable/neutral force in the killing game. Hu and Eden, while kind, are both easily swayed by their emotions. Whit is less swayed by emotions like that and is shown to be logical when it counts. Like when he reminded David that they only knew Xander for a few days, so there was no real way of knowing if how Xander acted was in or out of character during the scrum debate in Episode 8 of Chapter 1. Whit can manage the role of a jokester and calm person very well. However, his calm side has grown a lot over the killing game.
Whit has always been generally calmer compared to a majority of this cast. You can take his dialogue after the killing game was revealed during Episode 5 of the Prologue as an example. However, his persona is something growing in intensity over the course of the series. When Min was executed, Whit showed off at least some form of sympathy, compared to when Arie died. He barely acknowledges her death, focusing much more on comforting Eden. This is all odder considering that while he and Arei didn't always see eye to eye, he still had more connections to her than Min from what saw. While everyone else slowly descends into madness, Whit just keeps amplifying his calm persona.
How does this relate to his motive? At the very least, for Chapter 2, Whit's motive is something along the lines, "Because someone has to". Whit likes helping others. If he doesn't help the others through the game, literally nobody else will. Mainly because this cast is extremely mentally unwell. Also, having a goal and motive doesn't mean they'll be good at achieving said goal. Whit hasn't been particularly helpful despite his efforts, but I'll explain why this is a little later. Anyway, if you compare Whit and Hu's motive to help others, then it makes sense why they're so different. It also explains why Whit is more easily likable compared to Hu. Neither of them are bad, not by a long shot, but we still have to wait for more of both. I would like to move into my next section, since this section does reference something in there…
Part 5 - Whit's ability to see the best in others:
This is one of Whit’s lesser known traits, which is so odd because this trust is seen so much in his character. Whit’s main relationship is with Charles. He and Whit have lots of interactions. Like during the Prologue, where half of Charles’ introduction is him and Whit. Or during Chapter 1, where the pairs' friendship begins to develop. And Chapter 2, where we get to watch their friendship fully develop. At the start, both of them disliked each other. Charles disliked Whit for his jokester person and how often Whit would use him as an object for humor, which didn’t mix well with how much Charles hates being looked down upon. Meanwhile, Whit didn’t like Charles for his very rude and arrogant personality, which make sense considering how much of Whit’s persona(s) are based around being kind to others. What happens in Chapter 1 is what I’d like to discuss in relation to the topic of this section.
During Chapter 1, Xander tries to pin the blame on Charles by using Charles’s hemophobia. Charles’ phobia makes him breakdown when he sees gory or dead bodies because of his unresolved childhood trauma. After Charles gets lured into seeing Teruko’s dead body and runs away, he ends up running into Whit, who was in the cafeteria, mid-breakdown. At first, Whit assumes that Charles is messing with him, but ends up realizing he wasn’t. Whit ends up making the choice to stay and help out Charles. Levi brings up in Episode 9 of Chapter 1 that Charles could have been faking it. In a game where any wrong moves can lead to your death, Whit decision to stay and help could’ve gotten him killed if Charles had been. Yet Whit choice to stay, ignoring his own opinions about Charles at that point, decided to see the best in him. He chose to see the best in Charles despite only really having his intuition as a reason.
To continue this point, I’d like to bring up Teruko and David. Teruko is fairly straight forward, as during the dressing room scene in Episode 2 of Chapter 2, Whit says he doesn’t think Teruko or anyone else in the cast is a bad person. We get a small look into Whit’s thought process. He believes that, despite everyone acting callously, they aren’t bad people. They are human. They are just human with emotions and weaknesses, and that’s fine with him. He believes, even when Teruko herself doesn’t, that there is still a good person in her. That despite the current asshole she is being, she is still a good person, even if it’s a little deeper inside. This thought process also relates to how he handles David. Whit is the one who had David’s secret. David’s secret is, “You exist to manipulate others, others exist to be manipulated.” It is very hard to see this secret and believe whoever it’s about isn’t a bad person. But Whit having it actually makes this makes sense. Whit, much like Hu, likes to see the best in others. Unlike Hu, however, Whit keeps this fact to himself unless he’s having a moment of vulnerability. It isn’t hard to believe that he, despite how obvious the secret is, convinced himself that David wasn’t a bad person. Hell, we get some confirmation of this during Episode 11 of Chapter 2, when after David’s real personality is reveled, Whit makes a certain comment. “I was keeping that secret out of concern for your career. But if this is how you really act, then your career might be in trouble for reasons out of my control.” A majority of the fandom think he’s lying, and I won’t deny the possibility, but I feel like we should look at this comment from more than one angle. If we bring up the idea of him believing that the secret was simply worded badly, then it’s no wonder he of all people wouldn’t wanna take that risk. I don’t think anybody would want to ruin someone's whole career based on a secret that could be purposely worded badly. “...reasons out of my control”, this quote basically confirms that if David hadn’t gone insane in Episode 11, then Whit would have blamed himself for David’s career. Whit is a caring person, so this idea is very plausible.
If it was anyone else, then the idea would be unlikable, but it’s not unbelievable if you consider Whit’s character so far. A person who cares for others and has risked his life holding onto the idea of seeing the best in them. Whit is the only character who would hide a secret like that. Since I brought up Charles, Teruko, and David, that brings me to a different section…
Part 6 - Gaining importance through others:
This section should be fairly brief. Whit, while has not really been a major player, keeps having connections to characters who are. If most had to assign the DRDT cast cliché Danganronpa roles, then it tends to go Teruko is the protagonist (obviously), Charles is the support (stretching but okay), and David is the antagonist. Whit, as mentioned in the section before, is connected to all three. However, that isn’t all when it comes to his connections to major characters (this wouldn’t be a section if that was the case). Let me bring up Eden, Arei, and Hu. Whit has come to Eden’s defense twice now. First in Episode 5 of Chapter 1, when Arei and Arturo are insulting the cake which she was actually really proud of. Whit makes a joke about how cake=birthday song, which is able to distract the group from the insults and everyone becomes much less hesitant about eating the cake. Then in Episode 9 of Chapter 2, he buys Eden some time, since Teruko was asking about the note (that made Eden super suspicious), by bringing up the alibis. In Episode 1 of Chapter 1, we get to see that Whit and Arei were investigation partners. It’s not big, but is still a point of connection. Finally, he and Hu had a a fairly long talk about the killing game during the dressing room scene during Episode 2 of Chapter 2.
Whit keeps being given importance because of his connections with major players in Chapter 2. No matter how big or small. I honestly don’t have a good translation to the next section, so…
Part 7 - He is very different compared to the rest:
Whit handles most stuff in a very special way. Firstly, while a majority of this cast will become aggressive or start fighting with each other. Whit, however, is very different compared to the others in this case. Whit will make passive-aggressive or sarcastic comments. He is also very conflict avoidant, which will be dissected later for reasons. And second, his method of investigation. Compared to the majority of the cast, who go the logical route of investigating the body and scene of the crime in depth, then investigating other areas. Whit is one of the three character (the others being Charles and Rose) who don’t examine the body. This is odd considering that Whit doesn’t really seem to have a reason to not too, I think I know why, but it will have to be talked about a little later (I'm sorry, but this is the last time I promise). Anyway, as mentioned earlier, Whit is a very calm person. His type of calm (yeah type) is different from that of Hu or Veronika. Hu is calm but is very easily angered by her situation and constantly struggles to keep composure. Veronika is much more similar, but unlike Whit, Veronika finds joy in their situation. She finds the killing game fun and interesting, completely fine with her situation. She’s only calm because she doesn’t find the danger frightening. She’ happy because she hates being bored. Whit is only calm because, as mentioned many times, he had to be. Someone has to be calm and kind during their situation. One is more selfish than the other, and that makes them different. All the talk about Whit’s differences reminds me of one thing that only her has…
Part 8 - Whit’s intuition:
Before I get into Whit’s intuition, I want to talk about what intuition actually is. Intuition are just gut feelings. They are ideas that, while there i no logical reason to believe it, you just feel like you do. Whit’s intuition has been mentioned during Episode 4 and 9 of Chapter 1 and during his and Charles’ FTE. He claims, using his intuition, that one day, Teruko will be happy, that Charles isn’t faking the breakdown he is/was having, and that one day him and Charles were going to be friends. His intuition hadn’t been mentioned once through the first part of Chapter 2. I think this mostly because of the calm persona, He has to be more logical. This doesn’t mean his emotions won’t influence situations, but now he had to try to rationalize his decisions based on those emotions. He can’t just say it’s his intuition anymore, not with how the group is currently.
I still don’t have a good way to transition so let’s just-
Part 9 - Whit’s social life and conflict avoidance:
Whit isn’t a fan of fights, unless it for the sake of someone else. In Episode 2 of Chapter 2 (it’s a great scene okay), Hu and Whit are discussing how much the Mastermind knows about them. Teruko, being Teruko, finds a way to twist it into distrusting others. Whit then makes one of his passive-aggressive comments towards her. Then, only a little while later, Teruko is equally rude when Whit tries to call her a good person, and this time Whit keeps quiet. Whit won’t argue with someone unless what that other person is doing negatively effects others. His conflict avoidance is seen during Episode 4 of Chapter 2, where he refuses to try and break up any of the fights. His reasoning is that his talent isn’t couple counseling, therefore he can’t be the one to break up any of the fights. This is an excuse that Charles quickly shuts down. So yeah, Whit doesn’t like conflict, which is probably part of why he became a jokester in the first place, but we’ll come back to this though after the next section. Speaking of the next section…
Part 10 - The 4th wall (and finding information):
Whit is the character that shows the most awareness of the 4th wall. In Episode 8 of Chapter 1, Whit legit tells the audience to pause to read the list, since it would be useful. There is no way that he was directing that at the cast, since they can’t fuckin’ pause their lives. Then in Episode 10 of Chapter 2, Whit breaks the 4th wall, but in a far more subtle way. Whit says he doesn’t remember which secret Eden got, which leads to us, the audience, to be shown the list. Whit gave us a direct way to relook at the secret list, which is very weird since he could have just looked up and silently read the list. Something that Ace points out (kind of). Whit is the only character to show this much awareness of us, The weird thing is why would Whit want to help us? We’re the whole reason that he and the rest of the cast are stuck there, dying for our entertainment. So why would he want to help us? This is a question we’ll have to wait for an answer, since even I’m not sure yet. A downside of only being through half of the 2nd Chapter.
This section is the one I brought up earlier during Part 9, and will be connecting some of the mysterious points I didn’t expand upon earlier…
Part 11 - How does his backstory influence him:
You’ve probably noticed that despite his backstory being brought up first, I haven’t given it much though since. This is because I believed we all need a better understand of Whit before I could describe how his backstory affected all of what we’ve discussed. Before that, however, there is one part left.
If you remember, I said that Whit was a lonely kid. Along with what I said earlier in the backstory section this is also because of his talent and love life. Whit’s talent is something others have to pay for, mentioned in the Q&A earlier. He sets other people up as a way to earn money, which begs the question of why Whit took up the talent in the first place. Since we don’t have a proper answer yet, so we’re going to move one, just keep that as food for thought. Anyway, Whit is said to have a pretty bad romantic life despite his talent. He apparently just can’t find a partner, despite his efforts. This isn’t all that surprising when you consider that Whit isn’t all that socially competent at times. It’s hard to describe, so well use examples instead. During the FTE, Whit is shown to be completely shocked at Charles’ anger toward him. Whit hadn’t even considered the idea that the stuff he did earlier could be seen as negative. Even when it’d probably become obvious to anyone else at that point. Then, during the Computer Lab scene during Episode 7 of Chapter 2, Whit makes a dark joke about Min’s death in front of Teruko and doesn’t even think of the bad implication till Charles points it out to him. He is able to apologize and fix those behaviors, which is an interesting pattern of behavior. Not understanding a wrong till someone points it out to you, and then you improve it. Unless you point it out to Whit, he probably won’t notice the problem. I think these behaviors say a lot about his past and it’s effects on him.
Whit’s past would explain his social incompetence at times. His father wasn’t there to be a good example and his mom probably wasn’t there for his teen years, which is a huge time for development in minors. This leads to him not having the proper role-models.
(This is an off section, but I felt the need to bring it up. Whit is biracial, Asian American, American/Chinese, a race that faces a lot of discrimination in America. The DRDT creator is very well versed in his research of the topic and ideas he handles. Ace is a lovely example, including the higher chances of anxiety and chances for eating disorders they have. I won’t say I know anything, but I wouldn’t completely discard the idea of him facing discrimination in the past.)
So yeah, Whit was a lonely kid, why does it matter? It matters because if he is as much of a former loner as mentioned, then that would also explain why Whit keeps people-pleasing. (I think there is a want for acceptance, but a struggle to believe that it’s possible without the personas.)
His backstory also explains his seeing the best in others' mindset. People tend to think that the only way to look at negative events in life is through negativity, but that’s wrong. When you have nothing, then you’ll leach onto anything to hold onto, like optimism. This idea was used in the canon Danganronpa games with Nagito, and I think a similar principle is shared with Whit. Whit probably attached onto something positive because he literally had nothing else. Optimism, in that case, is the easiest answer. Whit deals with life, and the killing game by trying to find the good. Whit's life might not be great, but that doesn't mean he has to see it that way. It's probably why he keeps omitting the fact about his mother's death. Why look back on the past when there is so much left to do in life. He probably thinks this is what she would've wanted, based on his idolization of her.
This all brings me to my last section…
Part 12 - His belief in privacy:
Whit is very adamant in respecting others' privacy. In Episode 1 of Chapter 2, Whit brings up the idea that everyone keeps the secrets to themselves until they have more time to work through it properly. This gets ignored by Arturo, who does it anyway. I've already gone into depth talks about privacy with Charles and David. What I wanna talk about is why Whit is so big on it. Because that is a question we haven't gotten an answer to. Why? Well, while I'm not sure, I think it has something to do with his past.
I have also lost my mom, like Whit. When I lost my mom, people wouldn't stop questioning me about it. Whit described his mom as sophisticated, so that makes me think she could've been fairly known in the community. Whit probably had a lot of strangers question him about it, despite his feelings about it. Mix this with Whit's pleasing other mentality, then his adamantly about respecting others' privacy. This is the only part of his mentality that goes against his more logical character. Charles even says he gave Teruko the secret he had because he wouldn't trust Whit to sacrifice someone's' privacy when it's necessary. Charles has a strong understanding of Whit's, so I'd trust him. This is the only part of Whit that he never changes, even when he has different personas on. It's consistent.
This concludes the final section to this analysis, so onto the conclusion.
Conclusion:
Whit is a character that gets overlooked by a majority of the fandom despite being pretty much universally loved. His past is so much more than what we've seen or is talked about. His caring nature is something that has so much hidden depths. And, unless he is the Chapter 2 killer, there is so much left to find about Whit.
---
(Thanks for reading. Again, sorry if it's a bit all over the place. I hope I could shed some more light on Whit's character for ya'll. Have a good day/night.)
GUBAT BANWA is a SEAsian Fantasy Tactics RPG of Love and Violence coming very soon to Kickstarter!
Below is some tidbits about the great Heavenly Thunderer, the Fulminating One: JAMIYUN KULISA.
Let me tell you what happens at the moment when Lightning and Thunder strike and resound at the same time. It is there where you will find Jamiyun Kulisa, it is there you will find indiscriminate justice, Jamiyun Kulisa’s God-Searing Lightning.
In Gatusanon and Ba-enon Anitu, Jamiyun Kulisa is a great god, one of the greatest ones—many villages and some cities even consider him the Supreme God of Heaven, creator of the earth, one and the same with Siwa and is also the Himaya-Buddha.
He cannot be bound by petty mortal morality: his justice is as absolute as the lightning bolt. The Fulminating One sees all under the sky, for he is the Heavenly Thunder Father. It was he that struck down the undulating dragon Waritra, who threatened to swallow the entirety of heaven whole. It was he that punished the first Man for killing a shark with his lightning bolt. In the islands of Ramasa and more commonly in the cities in the margins of Gatusan’s mandala, he is known as Makapdan Rangit.
The name Rangit still resounds: it means heaven. In Ramasa, great datu are sometimes given the title of Rangit. There have only been 5 Rangit so far.
Devotees and balyan of Jamiyun Kulisa always carry with them items that have been struck by lightning. These anting are filled with Jamiyun Kulisa’s Merit—wearing them is sure to grant good fortune in every day life. Many Heavenspears and Senapati are devoted to Jamiyun Kulisa or at least know him by name, and remember tenets and teachings from Jamiyun Kulisa’s balyan.
When Jamiyun Kulisa is channeled by a balyan, the balyan’s trance dance is especially erratic, similar to lightning, and their hair is permanently bleached lightning-white. If in a war, a properly devoted chief balyan who has done the proper rituals can even channel Jamiyun Kulisa’s Scathing Lightning, which bleaches and then annihilates those deemed unworthy by Jamiyun Kulisa’s justice. And it is truly justice, in Gatusan, that Jamiyun Kulisa is a god of. Not law or retribution, but justice.
Spirit houses dedicated to Jamiyun Kulisa very often bring offerings of wine and blood encrusted blades, along with the usual offerings to a spirit house. One thing Jamiyun Kulisa hates when offered to are rare sealife—sharks, deep sea eels, serpents. “THOSE DO NOT BELONG TO HIM,” their balyan once clarified, the smell of charred flesh wafting from their mouths. “THOSE BELONG TO THE SEA, TO HIS RIVAL AND LOVER AND WIFE AND ENEMY.”
Jamiyun Kulisa’s Lover—sometimes his daughter in more northern Gatusanon beliefs—is INDIRA SUGA, the great Mother of Light, the Goddess of the Stars and the Sun, she who lives in every burning candle, in every smokeless flame. In official Kangdayanon tenets, Indira Suga is Jamiyun Kulisa’s primary spouse after having been divorced from the Sea, who is known only as Sri Maguayen.
In the root cities of Apumbukid near Apu Dayawa itself, some believe that Jamiyun Kulisa is the Mad Vanquisher King sent by Raktaparameswara, the Red Supreme Lord, avatar of Batara. This is why he is known as the Thunderbolt, as he arrived in the Footsteps of the Gods from Jamiyun Kulisa’s Arrows (which, he himself caused in a great war against the Baikhan Foundational Goddess). He fought with arrows larger than islands, and he himself was a god amongst men. What else is history made of but gods?
Akai claims a lineage from Jamiyun Kulisa: they say that the great Supreme Lord settled in the Footsteps of the Gods before Jaris Akai arrived, and he subjugated the lands. When Jaris Akai arrived, Jamiyun Kulisa returned to his rightful place in the Lower Skies as a Vassal-Mediator of Baginda Sumongsuklay, granting Jaris Akai the needed knowledge to conquer the Footsteps of the Gods from Siga.
Virbanwan Sampalataya has syncretized Jamiyun Kulisa into another Lightning War God that is a refraction of Makaubos, one of the Almighty Trinity, the Destroyer of All Things.
ANGEL EYES — TREECH!
Tumblr media
You were a creator, some would say. During those nights when sleep often managed to evade your grasp, you would sit at your old table in your room, wielding a pencil. The gunmetal grey of it would contrast the blank horizon of the amber-toned sheet. Staining the paper in such an authoritative way, you would mar it with various lines that formed a design of some sort. You wanted to tire yourself out, drain your mind of your ideas and impart them onto paper, in hopes of lulling yourself to sleep.
“Oh, these designs are absolutely gorgeous dear!!” You recalled your mother encouraging you when you had sheepishly showed her the product of your nightly endeavours, “Why don’t you help your father in the workshop and make these beautiful designs of yours a reality, hm?”
The distant echo of your father saying your name slowly drew you back into the busy atmosphere of the workshop.
“Hm?” You replied quickly, acknowledging his attempts to get you to focus.
“Look kiddo, I know it’s been tough since… the new laws, but let’s try get some work done today, okay? You just let me know if you ever need a break.” He looks at you sympathetically and pats your head gently. He’s always done this, no matter how old you were. You were forever guaranteed those comforting head pats from your father, which served as one of the few moments of solace in this harsh reality.
“I’m fine, Dad!! I was just zoning out, that’s all. I’m already used to the workload you know, it has been 4 years you know.”
You’re met with the sound of his hearty laughter and with that, you resume your work momentarily. Your hand effortlessly guides the sharpened instrument across the wood, shaving and smoothing out any imperfections. Raising it up and examining it, you internally approve of your fine handiwork.
“How does it look? Do you think those Capitol snobs would like it?” You direct the question to your father, holding up the wooden carving of a deer head in your hands.
He pauses for a moment and pretends to think carefully, before nodding. “Why, this would be a perfect accessory for our collection of other carved animal heads!” He laughs, and it’s clear he’s joking, imitating the materialistic character of the Capitol.
This impression causes you to laugh along with him. After all, if you had faced the oppression of the Capitol it would be hard to resist mocking them in the safety of your own home.
Suddenly, the door of the workshop creaks. A bell rings, and your father and you instantly put on poker faces. If it were the Peacekeepers, the worst punishment they could legally deal for mockery would be a beating. Perhaps maybe a shot to the head if they were feeling it, because it was common knowledge the Capitol never played fairly.
To your relief, it was just one of your father’s friends and his son. Your father instantly brightened up and greeted the two.
“Hey, you two got some wood for us?” Your father smiles.
“Yeah, and a whole lot of it too. It’s been much easier harvesting all this wood with my son to do most of the work for me!” The other older man jokes, slapping his son on the back. Your father responds with a chortle of laughter and nods approvingly at Treech.
“Same goes for me too. With my kiddo here she’s taken half the workload off my back.”
Three pairs of eyes direct their focus towards you, and you stray your attention away from your wooden deer to meet a set of hazel ones. As the fathers continue their conversation, the boy about your age approaches you. The sun pours into the workshop and illuminates his brown curls, bleaching them a shade of caramel.
“You made this?” He asks in a rather abruptly, but he makes up for his tone with the way he sends you a boyish smile.
You laugh softly and nod, “Yeah, I did.”
“It’s beautiful. I don’t know how you turn a log into a masterpiece like this.”
“Thank you, I try! Just a bit of carving and hard work, that’s all.”
He continues to admire the fine handiwork you’ve done, gingerly running the tips of his fingers across the grooves of your piece. It was almost as if he was scared to break it, but wanted to dare to feel it for himself nonetheless.
“What’s your name?” He asks, his brown locks spilling out from under his hat. Upon asking this question he quickly diverts his gaze back to the deer ornament, but after a few seconds he dares to meet your eyes again with an unfaltering look. As you utter your name, his mouth widens and it’s almost as if he had been entranced the moment you said your name.
“The name’s Treech. Hopefully we’ll see each other more often?” Treech asks and it’s during this that you take the chance to notice his angel eyes. The mixture of hazel and chestnut, sprinkled with hints of sage and the colour of the sky.
You watch him slowly retreat back to his father who is about to exit the workshop and you quickly take in the situation, “Yeah. Yeah, I’ll see you around?”
Treech looks back, sporting a sweet smile to you before leaving. It seemed he had left as quickly as he had entered, and a small part of you had hoped he would wander in again soon.
