finally got a copy of the revised tgcf novels and skimmed book 4 and the fenglian breakup hurts so much more in the revised version... fx's whole line about "i really don't know, then why have i followed you all this time" is removed. instead what happens is, right after xl says "no, it was the past me who was crazy", xl directly tells fx to leave:
Tumblr media
XL: "You should go." FX: "What?" XL: "I said, I don't need you anymore, you should go."
all the other parts of the scene are the same. these revised lines, though, are so painful... it also makes it obvious that fx did not abandon xl, he only left bc xl literally dismissed him as a servant and directly told him to leave 😭

Kirby: Mysterious Incident on the Pupupu Train! - Chapter 6: The Unlikely Culprit
Previous Chapter
With help from Kirby and Bandana, Chef Kawasaki was able to finish making breakfast. There was ham and eggs, salad, soup, and other delicious foods, but of course, none of them were enough to make up for the lack of sweets. Everyone was quiet, as if the fun trip up until now had been a lie. Even Wheelie and Capsule J2, who were always unable to stay calm, were quiet. Kirby was carrying plates to the table of Meta Knight and his crew.
Looking at them, Kirby said.
“Huh? Captain Vul isn’t here. What’s wrong?”
“He didn’t want to eat breakfast. Recently he hasn’t been doing well.” Axe Knight answered.
“That’s how it seems to be.”
Kirby remembered how different Vul was from his usual self. “I wonder why. Maybe he has a tummy ache?”
“Well, we thought he would be fine since his body is pretty sturdy.”
“If you say so, then...”
Kirby returned to the kitchen car and talked to Bandana, who was washing dishes.
“Hey, Waddle Dee. Captain Vul doesn’t seem to be doing well. He didn’t even come for breakfast.”
Bandana turned to look at him.
“Huh? Really? I wonder why.”
“I was thinking about going to see him.”
“Is that so? I’ll go, too.”
“I'll make something that he can eat even if he’s not feeling well so you can take it with you. Some soft rice porridge would be good.” Chef Kawasaki said.
“Ok! Thanks, Chef Kawasaki!”
Kirby and Bandana took the rice porridge made by Kawasaki on a tray and headed towards Meta Knight’s room. Bandana knocked on the door and a gloomy voice replied from inside.
“...who is it?”
“Kirby and Waddle Dee.”
“What do you want?”
“We’ve come to see you. Are you sick, Captain Vul?” Kirby said.
 The door opened slowly. Vul had a hollow expression and his sluggish expression showed that he definitely wasn’t well.
“...I’m not sick. I don’t need a visit.”
“We brought you some rice porridge.”
“Even if you don’t have an appetite, you should eat something!”
Tumblr media
At Kirby and Bandana’s pleading, Vul accepted the rice porridge with a frown and said. “...yeah. Thanks for it.”
At that moment, he tried to close the door, but then Kirby said.
“...there’ll be a tea party this afternoon. If you’re feeling better, you should come.”
“...no thanks, sweets and so on I can’t...”
“There won’t be any sweet cake because we don’t have any sugar.”
As Kirby said that, Vul flinched.
“Sugar...”
“Yeah. Someone went to the kitchen car and took the sugar. Because of that, we can’t make any cake. Chef Kawasaki has to think of a lot of new recipes and everyone’s disappointed!”
“But Chef Kawasaki said he can manage. He’ll use fruit and chocolate to make yummy desserts.” Bandana said.
“So you should come, too! If you eat some sweets, you’ll surely feel better!”
Vul was silent.
“Well, see you!”
“Take care!”
Kirby and Bandana waved at him and left.
Vul lowered his head and murmured. “I... I... what in the world...!”
~~~~~~~~
By the time Kirby and Bandana returned to the dining car, the passengers seemed to have already finished their meals. However, even if their plates were empty, everyone was reluctant to leave their seat. Between the sleeping staff members and the missing sugar, tension was high and made everyone too nervous to return to their rooms.
“The dessert melon was delicious.”
“Yeah... but of course...”
“I wanted to eat cake.”
Their discussions weren’t very exciting either. Meta Knight stood up.
“I’ll be returning to my room.”
“Well, us, too...”
His subordinates also stood up. And at that moment, the door to the dining car opened and there stood Captain Vul. The Meta Knights raised their voices.
“Oh, it’s Captain Vul.”
“You feeling any better?”
“Then how about you have some breakfa...”
“...no.” Vul said with a weak voice. “I’ve come to apologize to everyone.”
“...huh?”
“Everyone, please forgive me!” Vul shouted as he bowed his head. “I was the one who hid the sugar! I’m sorry... I offer my greatest apologies!”
“...HUUUUHH!?”
The passengers were so surprised that they looked like they would fall over. The ones who were especially shocked were the Meta Knights.
“It was Captain Vul!? But that’s-!”
“No way... that’s a lie!”
“It’s true...”
Vul said to Meta Knight with tears forming in his eyes.
“I’ve humiliated the name of the Battleship Halberd’s captain. I’ll fully accept being fired... I’m extremely sorry, Lord Meta Knight!”
Meta Knight stared at him and said. “There has to be a reason for it. Be honest and tell me everything, Captain Vul.”
“Yes, sir...”
Vul began to speak with a wilted look.
“What happened was...” He raised his head. “A diet.”
“A diet...?”
“Yeah. Everyone might not believe it... but... I’ve... gotten a bit too fat!”
Upon hearing that, the Meta Knights unanimously spoke.
“Yeah, I thought so.”
“I did, too.”
“Your clothes looked a bit tight recently.”
“...kuku!” Vul wiped his tears with his fist.  “How could everyone have noticed it? Yes, it was my clothes. Just before we boarded the Pupupu Train. I ripped my pants suddenly due to my movement. I was so shocked...”
Vul held his head.
“And above that, it was the precious captain’s uniform that I had received from Lord Meta Knight! While putting on a new pair of pants, I swore to myself that I would lose weight! And... never again would I rip my uniform!”
“So then, you didn’t eat much.” Javelin Knight said.
“I thought it was strange. Captain Vul can’t keep his hands off desserts.” Trident Knight said.
“I endured!”
Vul’s voice trembled.
“With my strong mental fortitude, I held back the urge to eat them! And yet, all of you! With your pudding and blueberry ice cream, it made it difficult...!”
He clenched his fist.
“And moreover, that damn Chef Kawasaki and his horrible proposal for a tea party! How much do you want me to suffer...!”
The harsh tone made Chef Kawasaki recoil.
“Huh?! That’s not possible!”
“...I understand. Now I can think calmly.”
Vul once again hung his head.
“But I was too hungry to make a sensible decision. I couldn’t let the tea party happen...! With that single thought... in the dead of night, I snuck into the kitchen car while everyone was sound asleep and stole the bag of sugar...”
“Where did you hide the sugar then? It wasn’t in our room, was it?” Axe Knight asked.
“Obviously not. If I hid it in the room, you would’ve easily found it. That’s why I hid it in the freight car.”
The freight car was the vehicle at the back part of the Pupupu Train. It was for luggage that couldn’t fit in the passenger’s rooms. Such as Dedede’s parasol and boat. During the trip, no one went there because there was no need to go there.
“It was packed with boxes and there was no room to hide the sugar. So I moved one of the boxes out and hid the sugar in its place...”
“Wait a minute.” Meta Knight suddenly cut him off. “What happened to the box you removed?”
“Huh? Uh...I properly put it in the kitchen car.”
“...as I thought.”
Meta Knight put a hand on his mask as if he was having a headache.
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“The box you moved had slumbercumbers in it.”
“...wha? Huh?” Vul replied with a face that didn’t comprehend was he was told.
“The box you moved into the kitchen had slumbercumbers in it. Chef Kawasaki mistook them for regular cucumbers and made sandwiches with them and that caused the driver and the others to fall asleep.”
Upon swallowing this truth, Vul jumped and raised his voice.
“HUUUHHHHH?! Th-then the crew members falling asleep... was my fault!?”
“That’s right.”
“I-I-I’M SO VERY SORRY!!” Vul staggered. “It wasn’t just the sugar, but the crew falling asleep was my fault! AHHHHHHHHHH! How am I gonna apologize for this...!?”
“Before that, there’s something I’d like to ask.”
“...what is it...” Vul asked, hunched over and completely disappointed.
“You said that the freight car was packed tightly with wooden crates, right?”
“Huh...”
“Mr. York, I’d like you to tell me about the wooden crates.”
Meta Knight looked at York, who was sitting in the corner. York raised his face as if he was determined.
“In those tightly packed boxes... were all of them slumbercumbers?”
“...”
“If so, you, the person in charge of the train, should have known. The slumbercumbers, on your orders...”
“HOLD IT!” A voice shouted.
Before anyone knew it, the door to the dining hall slammed open and in walked King Dedede. He leaned with one hand against the wall and said coolly.
“I’ve heard the whole thing.”
Tumblr media
“Ah! So, you eavesdropped!” Kirby said.
“What about driving the train? Isn’t it dangerous for no one to be in the cab?” Knuckle Joe said.
“I’ve left it to the Waddle Dees! It has a self-driving device, they can handle it for the time being! Chef Kawasaki, get me my breakfast! I want three large bowls of donburi! And don’t forget the chunky steak and a heaping pile of potato salad!”
“Yes, yes, coming right up.”
Chef Kawasaki quickly returned to the kitchen car. Dedede stepped into the dining car casually and glared at York.
“I’ve seen through your horrid plan! There’s no way you’re running away, York!”
York looked away with a blank expression.
“Slumbercumbers are a rare vegetable that can only be grown in the southern part of Dream Land! Until now, no one has looked at it as something that shouldn’t be eaten! But you saw it!”
“...”
“It’s a vegetable that’ll surely put you to sleep for days! If exploited, it’d have disastrous consequences!”
“Exploited...you say?”
“That’s right! For example... if you put the Waddle Dees to sleep in the Castle Dedede kitchen, you can have as much snacks as you want!”
Mace Knight rammed him. “That’s useless!”
“But it would be a particularly big problem if abused...” Axe Knight said.
King Dedede continued. “Anyway, you were smuggling slumbercumbers to make a fortune off them!”
“Smuggling...?”
“Yeah! You’re secretly transporting the slumbercumbers and selling them to thugs! If you do that, you’ll get a ton of wealth!”
“I knew it...!”
Bandana Waddle Dee shouted out with a trembling voice. He stood by King Dedede and glared at York.
“That was your plan from the beginning! The Pupupu Train wasn’t made to entertain us, it was made to transport the slumbercumbers...!”
York looked around at everyone with sharp eyes before speaking. “Yes, that’s right. I tried to transport the slumbercumbers. But that’s...”
At that moment, the door to the dining car opened and the Waddle Dees jumped inside.
“Your highness, we’re in danger!”
“Huh? What is it?! I’m busy right now!”
“W-we-we’re in real danger!”
The Waddle Dees were now crying.
“The red light on the driver’s seat is shining!”
“...a red light? Isn’t that the one that reports an emergency?”
“That’s right! And a voice that said “Shooting Star Approaching, Please use caution” came out!”
“At this rate, this train will collide with a shooting star!”
Btw if you ever wanna translate something from my English GG translations into another language, drop me a message and I can send you my manuscripts or the pages I've already cleaned for manga/4koma!! These things take a lot of work and time and, like, I already have the manuscripts and cleaned pages haha Might as well share them and save you some time too lol
The only thing I don't have a good manuscript for are the Artworks GGX 2007 captions. It was my first big translation project and I just kinda did them raw without much documentation. The caption directory .PDF in the Archive.org upload is all there is.
Bleach Book Club - Letters From The Other Side
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome to Bleach Book Club, where we discuss Bleach Books! Today we are going over the first Bleach light novel, Letters From the Other Side!
Non-spoilery description:
The book description of this story is: It is a novelization of the early chapters of the Bleach manga. Now I’ve read very little of the manga, mostly just watched the anime, so I don’t know if that is true. However I can say for sure that this story did not appear in the anime. Rather than “monster of the week”, like many of the early episodes of Bleach are, it is a “slice of life” story about a lazy sunday at the Kurosaki Household. Rukia makes fun of Ichigo for being "such a hard worker" and studying on the weekend. Ichigo makes fun of Rukia for sleeping in so late and forgetting they have a test LITERALLY TOMORROW, at which point Rukia freaks out, and hijinks ensue. It’s great! Please check it out if you haven’t already, but for those who just need/want a quick summary, here you go!
Spoilery description:
It’s Sunday at the Kurosaki household so that means no school and the clinic is closed. Everyone is eating a leisurely breakfast, except for Ichigo who has to quickly eat in order to bring breakfast to Rukia in secret. When he gets there, despite the fact that he’s two hours later than he normally would be on a school morning, Rukia is still fast asleep, and doesn’t wake up until he knocks. He makes fun of her for this, but Rukia is too happy about receiving food (especially if that food is a cucumber and ham sandwich) to be too mad about it. When she sees Ichigo studying at his desk, she teases him for being such a hard worker for studying on such a nice day. At which point he turns around and says she must be easygoing to not study for their test tomorrow. Rukia says that written tests don’t matter, only practical exams do, and asks when those are. Ichigo says they don’t have any, at which point Rukia freaks out. Turns out if she gets bad marks and has to stay after school, she’ll miss her favorite anime. She demands Ichigo teaches her how to study, but he says he’s too busy studying for the tests (I believe they are midterms?) himself. Kon calls Ichigo heartless, but Rukia agrees Ichigo shouldn’t have to help her, and after changing in the closet, leaves for the library. After she leaves, Kon reminds Ichigo that Rukia is from another world, and therefore legitimately doesn’t know how things work here and probably actually needs help, despite what she says. After some more “Kon hijinks” that results in Ichigo removing his pill so that he can study in peace, he thinks about Rukia’s predicament, sighs, and gives one of his friends a call.
After leaving Ichigo’s house, Rukia runs into Orihime and Tatsuki. When asked where she’s headed, she just mentions she’s going to the library to study. They ask her if she wants to study with them, but due to needing to go to Urahara’s as well, she declines. Orihime then offers Rukia her notes, but Tatsuki says that despite Orihime being very smart, her notes are completely nonsensical. Tatsuki then apologizes and says that her notes are all over the place, but that if Rukia has extra time, she can always come by her house later to study. As the girls leave, Rukia thinks about how nice they are.
Unfortunately, the translation I read was missing the next chapter where Rukia goes to the library, but I think she runs into Keigo and Mizuiro? She tries to hide from them, but fails.
Anyway, the next chapter has Ichigo meeting up with Chad, apparently the only one in their friend group with actually good notes. In fact, Chad’s notes are so good that they have helped Ichigo improve in some of his classes in the past. Anyway, Chad gives him a notebook and asks if Ichigo is using them for himself. Ichigo lies and says he is (since he can’t tell him about Rukia living in his closet), and Chad immediately realizes the truth, but is nice enough not to say anything. They then part ways.
In the last chapter, Ichigo gives Rukia the notes when she returns to the house. He explains they are from Chad, and that even if she crams, she should be able to get by. She thanks him genuinely before disappearing into the closet to study.
My thoughts:
Let me start off by saying, I really love this book. I enjoyed the slice of life feel, and I was really able to connect to the characters. I have been both the Ichigo and the Rukia when it comes to waking others up/being woken up in the morning. I am ABSOLUTELY NOT a morning person, and neither are my siblings, so sometimes I'm the one and other times I am the other. Also, food 100% makes the process better! 10/10 would recommend. Also, I know this is personal, but I love that the Kurosaki family water down their juices. As someone else who grew up with multiple siblings, watering down the juice is a great way to make it last longer, so that was a nice detail. Lastly, I will love this book and Tite Kubo forever for giving us bedhead Rukia art! She is adorable, and I love her with all my heart!
Moving on to the rest of the story, I like that we get to see Rukia interact with some of the other characters too! Rukia is pretty walled off emotionally during the Soul Society Arc, so it's nice to see her inner dialogue when talking to characters like Orihime and Tatsuki. Poor girl, she really liked them, but was scared to get too close! She wasn't of this world after all…
I like the bit of lore we get about Chad and Ichigo’s history too! I like how it builds out their early relationship beyond just "fighting bros".
And in the end, Ichigo gives Rukia the notes because he is a chump, I mean, a really nice guy! (Despite his attempts to appear otherwise, lol!) And Rukia shows honest gratitude despite her SS Arc tsundere tendencies! All in all, a good end to a good book!
Things I learned about the characters:
Ichigo: His family's clinic is closed every Sunday. I always assumed it was an emergency room, and that they were open 24/7! Also, I think this novel is a good reminder that Ichigo doesn't just help out his friends by fighting. He does little things like this too!
Rukia: I always assumed she wasn't a morning person, but this definitely confirms it! Best bedhead, 10/10! I wanted to hug her so bad! I would argue, however, that despite this, she is a very light sleeper since she wakes up on the first knock. Considering her background, both in Rukongai and as a soldier, this makes sense. Also, Rukia, even though you are my favorite character, and I love you, you would make (and technically did make) a terrible roommate! But hey, this does mean she makes great roommate/found family sitcom material! Get this woman a show! (Oh wait!) Anyway, as what was implied by Canon, Rukia is a terrible written test taker, but could probably apply the principles well enough.
Orihime: Is a genius, and just like all geniuses, her notes are illogical to the average person, or shinigami in this case! Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Orihime sort of figured out that Rukia was going through some stuff, not just physically (what with the supernatural battles and all), but also emotionally. Orihime is a nice person who loves making friends, but getting turned down by someone you barely know rarely upsets someone this much. Add that on to what we know of Orihime's past, and I wouldn't be surprised if she figured out that Rukia was severely depressed and was hiding it from everyone, including Ichigo. I think it would be interesting to see Orihime's perspective of Rukia during the Soul Society Arc.
Tatsuki: Her notes are also very bad! Haha! I'm still mad Rukia didn’t take her up on her offer of coming over to study. I WANT TO SEE THESE THREE GIRLS IN A STUDY GROUP TOGETHER!
Chad: The only character out of the entire story who has good, legible notes. Good on you, Chad! I know it feels weird to bring up Renji in a story where he doesn't show up, but if he was as good a test taker as his academy days backstory suggests, then I think he and Chad would make good study buddies!
Kon: Despite Kon being uh… Kon, I like how this story reminds us that this guy is pretty insightful too. Really wish the original story did more with his character.
Final thoughts:
Definitely check this story out if you get a chance! It’s a lot of fun and it’s always nice seeing these characters in such a chill setting. I love them all so much, and think they should all get an apartment together in a college style/found family AU asap! (Oh, look, a drabble!)
Anyways, thank you for reading!
   Mia had certainly experienced something far beyond common sense, and she vaguely thinks that only God could do something like that.  She was just making the most of the opportunities that she’s been given, and there's no lies here. Mia is being honest. "And the reason I started was all because of someone's prayer..."  Mia gently closed her eyes.  That memory is now far gone, but it’s a memory that will never fade away.  On the day Mia was sent to the guillotine... there was someone who prayed for her in the dungeon.  There was someone who stood by her and was kind to her until her last day...   Anne prayed for God's protection for me just as I was about to be executed. If you think about it, it's no exaggeration to say that everything started from then.
Shining Force Country Guide Translation - Part 4
The usual pie chart legend:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pao
Population: 130 inhabitants GNP: 2300 gold
Species Ratio:
The Pao tribe itself has only 130 people, but as they often take visitors on the ride as well, the population tends to fluctuate. Most are humans, as Pao citizens are racially homogeneous. ____
The transport revolution attained by the people of the plains
The Pao plains are around 1500 meters above sea level. This vast area that makes up the majority of the northern region of West Rune is entirely territory of the nomadic people of Pao. Around 2500 years ago, there was a massive immigration from East Rune, going from island to island of the Uranbatol archipelago. This group arrived all the way to these great plains after many generations, and their population slowly increased as well. It eventually divided into several tribes (still sharing the same ethnic identity) that would gather than split up again and again through their nomadic lifestyle, until an influential tribe emerged in the southeast around 2000 years ago, and got the others under their control (with an hereditary line of succession).
Paopigs were wild creatures living in the region, but being naturally calm animals, they were incredibly well suited for the nomads. They live off mostly of raising the paopigs as livestock, making dairy products out of their milk, and other specialties such as woolen goods made from paopig hair. These woolen goods in particular are valuable enough to gather merchants from other countries all year around, fighting for the chance to buy them. They mostly use the bartering system, with little interest to adopt any foreign currency.
It can be said that the adventurous and pioneer spirit of the Pao people is what made it possible to establish a nation in this region. As they continued to live reliant on the paopigs, they developed a strong faith on them as holy beasts, and thus do not eat their meat. Around 150 years ago they found by chance a huge engine in ruins of the previous civilization, and built the Pao Train. It brought a huge upheaval in their economy when it comes to the circulation of goods, and their culture has been modernizing as well. Besides that, the Pao Train also brought an energy revolution, as they began successfully using paopig excrement as fuel for it. Currently, Pao welcome a time of great changes.
-At a glance, it looks like a mere village. However, this is how Pao looks like while the Pao Train is stopped. A kilogram of paopig excrement fuels the train to run approximately 20 kilometers. The Pao Train is 300 meters long.
-The paopig's cry is surprisingly beautiful. It is comparable to the sound of a sitar (an octave higher to be precise). Such heartrending echoes deeply move the hearts of travelers around.
I'm very shaky on my translation of this caption. It mentions an instrument called カラッコ (karakko), and I could not find translation anywhere, so it might be made up? But since I was unsure I just brought up the sitar it is compared to right after.
Waral
Population: 300 inhabitants GNP: 5600 gold
Species ratio:
Waral is built atop a small island. The 50% percent of "other" species here are all merpeople. While they do not show up in the game, plenty of merman live there as well. ___
The ocean people who lost themselves in the mermaid paradise
A small island country north of the Lunatic Ocean. It has the hot and humid climate of tropical rainforests, and the coast is rich in resources. At the southern coast of the island, there is an encounter of warm currents flowing north and cold currents flowing south, called "The Sea God's Cauldron", famous for the frequent shipwrecks it causes. Around 150 years ago, a fishing ship from Rindo suffered such an accident and drifted to Waral, founding the country. Back then, Rindo was still a fishing country, and their main fishing spot was the "Mermaid's Roundtable", a wide shallow beach west of Waral.
The stranded people thus settled in the island, and eventually the fishing spot to the west became their alone, as Rindo shifted to merchant activities. Even now fishing is their main activity, with 70 percent of the population working on it, and the remaining part being mostly shipbuilders and the merpeople who already lived in the region.
Back when the country was founded, coexisting with the merpeople was a huge social issue for the small island. However, Harengett Splasher II of the royal family married a mermaid, reaching a compromise between both parties this way, and it stays to this day. Some historians criticize this as a marriage of convenience.
The country was born out of an unfortunate accident, yet supported by the warm climate and its plentiful resources, the citizens are distinct for their endless cheerfulness. Its GNP of 5600 gold is third place in Rune, after Rindo. In recent years it has also been planning to expand its tourism business, as its strategic positioning right between the west and east parts of the continent makes it a country that cannot be ignored.
-It's an unusually small island, yet it is blessed with warm climate and plentiful resources. Because of this, it might be the greatest place to live in all of Rune. Its main activity is fishing, but just setting up nets is enough to catch plenty of fish, so people don't work much.
-Described by the king himself as a tropical paradise, life in Waral is full of pleasures. Swimming in the ocean, fishing, gathering shellfish and the like in the beach, there are plenty of ways to kill time. Even so, some who are still bored have began to venture into the tourism business as a hobby.
The weird royal guy name was unfortunately left for me to romanize. I have no clue if his first name means anything, but his last name, チャップチャップ, is literally "chopchop", but given that it is close to チャップン, the onomatopoeia for splashing, I feel that's what they were going for.
Tumblr media
Rudo
Population: 40 inhabitants GNP: 1700 gold
Species ratio:
Much like Manarina, Rudo doesn't look anything like a country. As said in game, it is in fact just a village. The species distribution is very balanced, excluding centaurs. Perhaps they have all gathered together because of the dragon gods. ___
The mountain village of the dragon gods' faith, declining in population
The west side of the Dragonia mountain mass is extremely steep, and this natural barrier forms an unusually long and narrow coastline between mountains and the Cypro Ocean. The village of Rudo is in this northwestern area of East Rune.
Around 300 years ago, to protect the dragon gods who were on the verge of extinction, the royals of Guardiana proposed that each country sent some settlers there, and thus the village was born. At first they succeeded in their conservation efforts, but then reached a dead end, and in recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of people leaving the village and spreading the view that the dragon gods are over.
To show how complicated this tendency has become, the village currently only has about 40 people. It is also said that they are all children under the age of 11. The adults seem to have moved to some other village north of Prompt. The dragon god faith the adults had converted into was still deeply rooted in the hearts of the children, and some sociologists think of this village's separation as a sort of religious schism. The children, following a girl named Karin as their leader, have developed small scale agriculture and fishing, restoring the self-sufficient activities the village had sustained so far. Besides that, they have also gone past their original boundaries, advancing halfway up the Dragonia mountains and hunting there.
Before the schism the village had a prosperous fishing industry in the calm waters of the Cypro Ocean, as the gulf surrounded by sandbanks on its north and south made for a good fishing spot thanks to the ocean currents. Some think the place could recover economically fairly easily if the population problem was solved.
-Rudo village is blessed with a surrounding environment of plains and the ocean. It is hard to believe that the place is suffering from a decline in population. Going east from there, there's Dragonia, where the remaining dragon gods live.
-Since there are so many children younger than 10 gathered together,  the village is really lively. They aren't playing around, being pretty busy each with their own tasks (such as taking turns to cook or doing the laundry). Despite that, the whole village has the feel of being their playground.
Legend has it that, in a northern mountainous land, there exists a jewel that is guarded by a dragon. That jewel has the ability to grant a single wish, no matter what it may be.
As of the present, there exists not a single soul to pass on the tale to future generations. That tale has since become a long-forgotten legend of the distant past.
If one were to venture to that far-off land, descend upon their knees before the fair maiden who would welcome them in with open arms, and place a kiss of a vow upon her, she would bestow good fortunes and blessings upon their very hands.
This is a story that would lead to the world of “Hopes”—
The flames of the candles atop the round table flickered in the breeze.
Several patrons were seated throughout the pub, conversing softly with each other as they downed their beverages.
Usually, downtown pubs like this would be filled with joyful, tipsy patrons. However, the patrons of this particular pub were visibly gloomy, without emitting a single laugh from their throats.
All they did was cast wary glances at the traveller, who was seated at the counter.
Ever since Yujiro set foot into that town, he had the nagging feeling that there was something strange about the place, which had only seemed to grow exponentially stronger with each passing moment.
Not only was that town a small country town that seemed to be rarely visited by travellers, it was also the royal capital of a small country. He had been able to catch a glimpse of a castle with a spire that was erected beyond the city gate, after all.
Despite having heard that it was a country with prosperous trading opportunities that many travellers and merchants would frequent, Yujiro had found that most of the stores along the main street were closed, with nothing but old signs blowing in the wind. Furthermore, the streets were fairly devoid of pedestrians as well.
When he had stopped by the marketplace in the daytime, the only things that were being sold were shrivelled up vegetables. He had been befuddled when he had not even been able to hear the voices of local children.
“I heard rumours that this town is rather lively, but it’s pretty quiet around here, no?” Yujiro commented casually to the barkeep as he took a sip out of his drink.
The man eyed him suspiciously, even as he continued to pour sake out from a barrel, but he shook his head in response. “It’s not like that at all. It’s just that the roads have become impassable thanks to some demons. Things became this way all because they decided to appear.”
“I see…”
(Demons, hm…)
Such stories were not uncommon. In fact, demon encounters, however rare, were just part and parcel of travelling. Even so, encounters with wild beasts, which resided in the mountains, and with bandits, who would attack travellers in their attempts to rob them of their money and goods, were more far common than encounters with demons.
In any case, weapons for self-defence were undeniably a necessity for one’s travels. If one were to take a single step out of the city gates, they would thus find themselves in a danger zone, where they could be attacked at any given time.
“Things were fine during the reign of the previous king. But after the princess ascended to the throne…” the barkeep suddenly fell silent, a complicated expression marring his face. “Well, you should get out of here as soon as you can too…”
With that, the man turned his back to Yujiro, as though he was closing himself off from further questioning. Finding it pointless to continue to press him for answers, Yujiro placed a single silver coin upon the counter, alongside his half-empty cup of diluted grape wine.
He picked up his longbow, which was wrapped in some cloth, from where it had been leaning against his chair. Slinging it over his shoulder, he departed from the counter.
“Thanks for the food.”
The other patrons suddenly fell silent as they stared at Yujiro as he made his way out of the pub.
A damp breeze blew into Yujiro’s face as he stepped outside the pub, closing the door behind him as he went. Rain poured down from the overcast skies above, pelting against the cobblestone pathways, which were completely devoid of other people.
“I didn’t get to hear anything of note, huh…”
Donning his wide-brimmed hat, Yujiro began to walk along the streets, which were gradually getting wetter thanks to the rain.
He had talked to a few people since he had arrived in the town, however, they were all rather tight-lipped and refused to tell him much. Considering the nature of the townsfolk, he figured that he would have to stay in town for a few days and gather information patiently if he wanted to get anywhere.
(Guess it can’t be helped… Even so, there’s no one else around.)
Yujiro looked around the quiet, dark streets, but not even the lights of the houses seemed to be turned on. It was rather eerie, almost as though it was a ghost town. Despite the fact that the sun had just set for the day, it was probably still too early for anyone to turn in for the night.
Upon hearing the soft creak of a door, Yujiro turned around to meet the gaze of a child, who was peeking out of the doorway, only for the child to immediately withdraw into the house with a loud slam of the door the very second their eyes met.
“Didn’t I tell you not to go outside?!” the child’s mother scolded from behind the door.
(It’s not like there’s anyone outside, though.)
Yujiro continued to walk, donning a rather perplexed expression across his face. Some of the greyed clouds above him had the slightest tinge of red, which was probably due to the light of the moon, which was concealed by said clouds.
Just as Yujiro was crossing a stone bridge that extended over a river, he noticed a faint figure of a person, who was appearing to be following him from behind. Glancing at their reflections on the surface of the water, he deliberately slowed down his walking pace.
The person continued to pursue him even as he walked through a narrow street, where a drunken old man was lying fast asleep against the wall, cradling a bottle of liquor in his arms.
As Yujiro rounded the bend in the street, he tossed a single glance over his shoulder before sprinting forth. The sound of the footsteps of his pursuer also quickened in turn, as though he was in a hurry.
With the rainfall having intensified without him realising it, Yujiro found that his cape and hat had somehow become completely soaked through.
A wall at the end of the street sealed it off as an evident dead end. Yujiro drew a dagger he had kept concealed by his waist as he turned around. The blade of his dagger sliced through the air, edging real close to the throat of his pursuing opponent. However, the reflexes of said opponent were slightly faster, as he ducked to dodge the blade, seemingly on instinct.
Upon seeing the momentary unsteady state of his opponent, Yujiro kicked the ground as he tried to go for a roundhouse kick.
“Ho-hold on!” his opponent hollered in a panic, raising his arms in a gesture of peace.
Judging from his height and facial features, he looked to be of about the same age as Yujiro. With a wide-brimmed hat pulled over his head, and a cape draped around his shoulders, he seemed to be a traveller as well. His broad shoulders, coupled with his strong-looking limbs evoked the impression that he was a well-built young man. His hair was tied back with the use of a ribbon, and rainwater was dripping off the brim of his hat.
“Don’t spring an attack on me without any warning. Ain’t that unfair?!”
“There’s no need to show courtesy to hooligans who sneak after others, no?” Yujiro smiled with a smug scoff, still clutching his dagger in his hand.
“I’m not a hooligan. Can’t you tell just by looking at me?”
“You look pretty much like a hooligan to me, though.”
“Huh?! How so?!”
“Your face and the air you give off. Though, if you’re not a hooligan, just what are you? A bandit? A robber? A mugger?”
“Aren’t all of those the same things?!” he heaved a sigh of resignation.
Suppressing a laugh at his opponent’s ever-changing expressions, Yujiro returned his dagger to its sheath at his waist. He figured that his opponent was not lying about not being a hooligan. With that being the case, he was now somewhat curious about why said opponent was even following him in the first place.
(I guess I wouldn’t mind hearing him out for a bit…)
“So… What did you want with me?”
He looked up at Yujiro and levelled him with a serious gaze. “It’s because I heard that… there’s a guy in this town who’s looking for the only jewel in the world that can grant a wish. Just like me.”
The sound of the raindrops thudding against the ground of the alleyway overlaid his soft-spoken words.
The two of them fell silent for a few seconds as they looked at each other.
“Yujiro” slowly tugged the brim of his hat downwards, a mutter of “I see…” being the only thing to slip past his lips.
(He’s just like me, huh…)
What is Ms. Orange about?
After moving to a safer city, a woman finds out that she and everything else around her is fictional. Wishing for a peaceful life and wanting to be free from a superior being's control, Orange will try to stop the author from developing a story for the book, since a plot would mean that her whole life is already decided for her and no action she takes will ever be her own. With the help of a group of teenagers, she will try to achieve her goal by using her knowledge to subvert clichés. At the same time, the author will insert any conflict into the story with the aim that Orange eventually gives up and fully submits to the role that has been planned for her.
It's a fantasy novel with science fiction and metafiction elements, and it is mostly filled with comedy. The main themes are reality vs. fiction, obedience vs. rebellion and adolescence.
