5/10/23
I was woken up again. At 9AM again. It's been like 4 consecutive weeks in a row now, I'm afraid it's becoming a ritual for these people. I did the whole go downstairs, get a bowl of cereal and then pass out in the chair thing again. It just really puts a damper on the whole day when I do that. I never feel fully rested, I never get right to sleep... so I end up finally starting my day way later. It's very frustrating.
I finished the ink drawing. Here, I'll post it.
Tumblr media
I like it. I've been kinda... letting these improvised pieces inspire the next one, so it becomes... almost like a flip book. Each one taking the last one and iterating on it. This one brought in a lot more of these blobby shapes that have dominated a lot of my abstract work over the past 20+ years.
There was a big gamechanger that came into the day today. A YouTuber that I've been following since... probably 2015? The one who introduced me to RimWorld. The one who really inspired me to get into streaming at a serious level. Whose VoDs I have used to help me sleep for several years because of his thoughtful and comprehensive narration. He released a video today that... I have never seen any work of his at nearly this level. It was over 3.5 hours long. It was a deep-dive video essay on the incorporation of story in survival games, done through the lens of the game The Forest. It was... spectacular. I couldn't walk away, I couldn't even pause it. It pained me to pause it to even go pee, I was sitting squirming in my chair trying to watch and draw for at least 20 minutes before I caved. It's a really good video essay. Well researched, extremely well edited, fair and generous to the developers, yet... he stands his ground on his point and his perspective.
What kinda shook my foundation with it? He took the end of the essay as an opportunity to do a face reveal. And... it was a strange experience. He... looked like he could be a relative of mine. Like... he looked like a version my dad's younger brother... but my age. (I look more like my mom.) It... was a strange experience. To finally have a face to match the voice that has been setting the background when I went to sleep for years, that I've had on in the background while gaming since... at least 2017. Whose Project Zomboid streams I watched on the last night I spent with my terminally ill dog, and watched in bed while grieving her passing when I couldn't sleep. I have his Banished playthrough that I've been listening to fall asleep to this week, last week it was Planet Zoo. I can't even do the math on how many of these streams I have absorbed. Every Stellaris playthrough he's done, every Space Engineers stream I could find, X3, Kerbal Space Program, Rimworld (of course), good lord his playthrough of Subnautica was one of the most compelling playthroughs I've ever watched. Years and years of material to drift off to sleep to. It had been my routine for pretty much the whole pandemic... to play his streams when going to sleep, and somewhere along the way I started putting music on too so that once the stream ended, there was some sound on so it wasn't just silence.
Needless to say, it's very odd to finally get a face to match the voice. Like finally seeing the person who voices a cartoon character for the first time. It's just... my brain didn't really want to process it. But like... the most unsettling and weird part... is how... familiar he looked. And he, of course, is the one I gravitated towards because we have a ton in common. Though, over the past few years, we have split ways on stuff - lifestyle, entertainment preference, etc. It's just... odd. And it's still sitting with me.
What scares me a bit... I'm afraid it might be a sign he's getting ready to step away from YouTube. He might not, I might be reading into it. I mean, it's been his entire life for a decade. I dunno. Maybe he's just... transitioning? It felt like a big moment. He was always very against the premise of doing face reveals, always felt they were tacky. It validated me a lot, because I never really saw the point of taking up what we called in video and graphic design class "screen real estate" with a static box that just has your blank stare at a computer screen. I feel like it doesn't... contribute anything, it always felt really... vain. And he always echoed the same sentiment, and it gave me a lot of validation in an ocean of carbon copy streamers. And yet... here he is. So, idk. I've gotta get back into his livestreams soon. He's just... he's in UK, so... it's hard to get my schedule to overlap well.
I was so enthralled by the video that I skipped a shower. I ordered a pizza. I ate a bunch of it and then started working on the skull. The skull is in pretty rough shape. A lot of the bone is... nature got to it. It's not bad, it's just... porous and discolored in places. I did my best to get the debris out of the cavities, got most of it. I started to sand it, and it actually helps the look a lot. I might leave it on the windowsill to sun bleach it a bit, in addition to the sanding and polishing I'm doing. I have no clue what to do with it. There aren't really a lot of flat spaces. So... I'm probably going to treat the design work like... like face tattoos or something. I honestly don't know. But I think sanding and polishing it first is a good idea, it'll be an easier surface to work on. Then I can choose whether I even want to carve it, or if I want to just go ahead and ink/paint right on it. Now that it's out and sitting in my workspace, it freaks me out a lot less.
I tried polishing some stones too, some of the ones from the National Park. I just... wasn't really feeling it. That used to be go-to work for me in the past, and now? Now it just felt forced. So... I kinda took it easy today. I guess. I mean, if you want to call working on 3 separate projects "taking it easy".
I'm a bit depressed tonight. Probably the sleep deprivation affecting me. And the whole... not having a big super inspiring "super excited to work on it" project. Despite my anxiety about design elements and the permanence, I was always really excited about working on the hoodie. And the desire path project, I loved it. This skull? I'm just not there yet. I'm sure once I get the surface prepped and start sketching it will get much more comfortable and enticing. I guess it's just the sanding and polishing that I'm just... not really into right now, just in general.
I think I'm going to take this opportunity to head to bed a bit earlier than I usually do. Fingers crossed I don't hear another vacuum or whatever at 9AM, because if I go to bed right this second? I'm only getting 6 hours of sleep.

KSP Weekly: A Martian Helicopter
Tumblr media
Welcome to KSP Weekly! Before we begin, we want to pay homage to author and journalist Tom Wolfe, who unfortunately passed away on Monday. Wolfe is widely known for pioneering and giving a name to New Journalism, a style of journalism characterized by a subjective perspective, a literary style reminiscent of long-form non-fiction, emphasizing "truth" over "facts," and intensive reporting in which writers immersed themselves in the stories as they reported and wrote them. His work includes the influential book The Right Stuff about the Mercury Seven astronauts, which was published in 1979 and made into a 1983 critically acclaimed film of the same name directed by Philip Kaufman.
Not all was sad news this week, NASA revealed new exciting news about the Mars 2020 rover mission. Part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the Red Planet, the mission’s main objectives are to identify past environments capable of supporting microbial life; seek signs of possible past microbial life in those habitable environments, particularly in special rocks known to preserve signs of life over time; collect core rock and "soil" samples and store them on the Martian surface; and finally, to test oxygen production from the Martian atmosphere - all pretty cool in its own right. But, it is the Mars Helicopter what caught our attention the most. This small autonomous rotorcraft will travel with the agency’s Mars 2020 rover mission, currently scheduled to launch in July 2020, to demonstrate the viability and potential of heavier-than-air vehicles on the Red Planet.
Weighing just 1.8 kg (4 lb) and with the body of the vehicle roughly the size of a softball, the Mars Helicopter will use its twin counter-rotating blades that spin at about 3,000 rpm, 10 times faster than a helicopter on Earth, in order to fly in the thin Martian atmosphere. It will be equipped with solar cells to charge its lithium-ion batteries, and a “heating mechanism” to keep itself warm during the Martian night. It will be transported to the surface in the belly of the Mars 2020 rover, which will deploy it on the Martian surface and then drive to a safe distance from which it can relay commands. The Mars Helicopter will have two cameras to take images of the surface and hopefully will delight us with some amazing imagery. Here is a video of the helicopter’s technology demonstration.
[Development news start here]
Work shortage is not a problem at the KSP HQ with the team continuing development on the upcoming 1.4.4 as we mentioned last week. One of the aspects that is being looked at is the particle system FX. After the release of 1.4, various players identified visual issues regarding the particle system, which seemed to have experienced a setback. We took notice and took on the task of making these system look and behave better. We looked into the code to determine the situation, and now that the assessment is done, we are implementing improvements to make our SRB exhausts, smoke, spark, flame and aero/reentry effects, among others, look and behave better. As of today, the team finished work on the smoke effect to ensure that these particles look sparser and dissipate faster. The Splashdown effects have been also improved with the timing of the splash and positioning looking and behaving considerably better. Additionally, the SRB exhaust and sparks, which were using the force pattern for smoke, were tweaked to make them look better.
The particle system wasn’t the only thing in the agenda. We also updated the look of the maneuver nodes in MapView so that these fade slightly when positioned behind a celestial body. This small feature should help to manage and distinguish your nodes when performing elaborate maneuvers.
The team also continues to work on various enhancements for the expansion. For example, we are implementing key binding improvements for the Mission Builder. This will allow creators to use [ESC] key to quit or close all dialogs and Mission Builder scene, [TAB] key to move to the next field in the SAP, and [`] key to set the search field to have focus as in the VAB and SPH. Our aim is to facilitate the process of creation with quality of life features that were missing.
In other news, the folks at BlitWorks have also been occupied with the development of the new patch for Kerbal Space Program Enhanced Edition. This upcoming patch aims to solve many issues that this version was experiencing. In the latest build, they managed to solve a bug that displayed all the buildings as fully upgraded Tier 3 buildings when starting a new career game. This bug also prevented players to properly manage them since the buildings were shown as being fully upgraded. Another annoying bug that was squashed in this build displayed the available parts twice in the Research and Development building. Kudos, BlitWorks!
Don’t forget that you can also share and download missions on Curse, KerbalX, and the KSP Forum.
That’s it for this week. Be sure to join us on our official forums, and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Stay tuned for more exciting and upcoming news and development updates!
Happy launchings!

We live in a unique moment in history -- that sweet spot when video games are so realistic and reality is so ridiculous that it's hard for paid professionals to tell the difference between the two.
In an effort to better explain the intricacies of an upcoming SpaceX mission, CBC News helpfully provided a computer simulation of a rocket landing, which was actually footage from a cartoony video game called Kerbal Space Program that they ripped from YouTube. The game's physics are considered impressive, but somehow we doubt astronauts would trust equations calculated by off-brand Minions.
Not to be outdone, Russia Today aired a report on child soldiers in South Sudan that, instead of featuring an actual photo, used a screenshot from Metal Gear Solid V. You know, as if the internet wouldn't remember a game that sold well over six million copies.
But hey, at least these stations nailed the timeframe within a couple hundred years ... unlike Danish television program TV2, which illustrated a report on modern-day Syria with a screenshot of 12th-century Damascus from Assassin's Creed. To be fair, the Assassin's Creed games are how we learned about Ben Franklin being a horndog, so it's not like they're entirely devoid of historical value.

Boss Week Day 6
Show off a creation that Jack hasn’t seen.
SO, when Mark did his eight-hour stream to try to get to the Mun in Kerbal Space Program, I was feeling inspired.
So I wrote a fic about both him and Jack (since Jackaboy is so good at the game) where they get sucked into the game and have to find a way to get out.
Jack got sucked into the game a few weeks before Mark, and due to some issues, he got stranded in space. The boss calls in their best engineer (Mark) to help create a rocket to save Jack and bring him back to Kerben safely.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Rise of the Planet of the Kerbals
Mark opened his eyes and immediately, a chill ran down his spine. This was not his home, let alone his bedroom. Where was he? He sat up and winced as his back cracked. The small bed that he had been sleeping on was very thin, and with his head resting on the pillow, his legs dropped over the other side. Mark tried to remember where he was last, and all that came to mind was finishing his March charity live stream and going to bed not long afterward.
"Mark Kerman, please report to the vehicle assembly building for duty, Mark Kerman, please report to the vehicle assembly building.", a voice came over an intercom in the room Mark had been sleeping in, and Mark raised an eyebrow. Were they talking to him? But his last name wasn't Kerman, so it must be someone else, right?
Wrong.
Mark's stomach dropped when he saw that he had a name label on his shirt, which read, "Mark Kerman." With a long, dread-filled sigh, Mark stood up and began to make his way to the assembly building.
Even though he had no idea where the assembly building was.
Mark walked down a hallway and froze when he saw something he didn't want to see.
There was a group of actual Kerbals in the hallway.
"The hell-?", Mark asked himself, but shrugged it off and acted like everything was fine.  Why didn't any of them notice that he was a human and not a Kerbal? Mark had a bad feeling in his stomach but pressed onwards to the assembly building.
When he entered the large space, he looked around in wonder at the Kerbals hard at work. No, wait, they were just waddling around.
A Kerbal in a business suit approached him, adjusting his tie. "Greetings. I'm sure you're wondering why I've called you into duty today.", the Kerbal stated, clearly the boss of the place. Mark looked down on the Kerbal, who only came up to his knees. Mark nodded, and the Kerbal smiled. "Well, you obviously know about our launch yesterday, about how we sent a... uh... Jan Kerman? What that his name? Whatever, Jan's design of rocket had a flaw in it. There wasn't enough fuel to get back down to Kerben, and he has no parachute. Jan is stuck in orbit, and we need you to give him a refuel and a parachute. It won't be easy, but you're the best engineer we have. There's a private communication room, typically used for families to get in contact with astronauts in orbit. I want you to use it to talk to Jan, get to know him. He may be able to give you some tips. If you want to, you can grab a portable communication device to talk with him while you're building your rocket. It's to your left, good luck astronaut!", the Kerbal walked away and Mark cursed to himself.
Kerbals were renowned for being so stupid that it was one of the attributes in their profile. But Mark would like to postpone his take-off as long as possible, despite his love for space.
Mark entered the private communication room and took a seat in the chair. He winced as the chair dropped to floor level and Mark sighed as he refused to try and adjust it. He turned on the computer, and a menu was pulled up, showing the ships that were in orbit. There was only one, so Mark simply clicked it and watched as the loading screen displayed a smiling Kerbal, and the words, "Please wait as we connect to our astronauts!"
Finally, a static-filled screen popped up, a moving figure in the background was blurred by the heavy interference. The Kerbal seemed to be trying to clear the interference on his end. "Ugh. C'mon you piece of junk, work!", the Kerbal muttered, and Mark jumped as the Kerbal smacked something in frustration. "Are ya fookin' kidding me!? What a piece of shite...", the voice swore, and Mark's eyes widened as he realized that he recognized the voice. "Wait a minute, Jack!?"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Wait a minute, Jack!?", Mark exclaimed, and the green-haired Irishman sat up as the static cleared. "Mark! Holy crap it's you! Oh, thank Jesus! I actually have a chance of getting out of here!", Jack leaned back against his seat in relief, letting out a breath he had no idea he was holding.
"What are you doing here?", Mark asked and Jack rolled his eyes. "Just lookin' at the scenery. I'M STRANDED IN THE COLD VACUUM OF SPACE!", the Irishman yelled, and Mark winced, though did admit that he probably deserved that. "How did you get stranded in space? That business suit guy kind of gave me the short version and called you Jan.", Mark explained, and Jack sighed. "I was supposed t' refuel the space station up here, which is where I am now. I was also supposed to retrieve something from in here. I got that into my ship and was getting ready to get the hell out of here when a loose piece of spacecraft smashed into my ship! My ship fell back down to Kerben and fookin' crashed! Now I'm stuck up here!", Jack explained, and Mark frowned deeply. "Well damn. Well, I have no plans on how to get you down. I haven't dealt with space stations in Kerbal Space Program yet. Do you think you can help me?", Mark asked, and Jack grinned. "Yeah! I'm not the best at this, but I did get up here safely! What's your profession? I'm guessing that it's engineer, right? I'm a pilot.", Jack said, and Mark shrugged. "According to the business guy, I'm an engineer.", Mark explained and Jack nodded.
"I figured as much.", the Irishman replied. "Okay, so where should I start? I mean, I just managed to get to the Mun during my stream, but that was after eight hours of stressful work and several explosions.", Mark pointed out and Jack seemed to gain a more awkward composure. "Well, I have some good news for you.", the green-haired man said, his gaze avoiding Mark. "Okay, what is it then?", the blue-haired American asked, worried by the weird vibe from his friend.
"If you so happen to explode or blow up, you're alright!", Jack finally said and Mark looked at him like he was crazy. "What do you mean? I'll be dead!", the American exclaimed, and Jack chuckled. "Well, let's just say that getting up here was seventh times the charm!", Jack laughed and Mark gaped at him. "You mean you exploded?", he spluttered and his fellow Youtuber nodded. "Yeah. It was fookin' terrifying the first time, but after the second time, it wasn't too bad.", Jack explained and Mark sighed. "Jeez. I just wanna know why we're here. Getting sucked into a video game is usually something that only happens in fan-games.", the American pointed out and the Irishman nodded in agreement. "Yeah, when I find out what or who is responsible for this, I'm gonna punch the FUCK out of 'em!", Jack yelled angrily. Mark nodded in agreement. "Yeah, this isn't good. Okay, I'm gonna switch this to the portable tablet, okay? Expect some static.", Mark warned as he plugged in a tablet to the computer. Jack waited silently as the video was transferred to the smaller device, but flinched as something that he couldn't explain happened.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark paused in confusion as Jack seemed to stumble and fall off the chair as he picked up the tablet. "Are you okay there?", Mark asked as more static came on screen. "Dammit, work you piece of junk.", Mark cursed as he lightly shook the tablet. Jack's startled yelps could be heard and Mark paused in concern. "Jack? What's going on?", he asked as the Irishman seemed to struggle to stand as if the space station was tilted. "I don't know, this hasn't happened before-WOAH!", Jack yelled out as suddenly everything straightened out and he could stand again. Mark was very confused. Something seemed very fishy here. And something was wrong with Jack's video feed or camera. He looked... basic and simple, oddly enough.
Jack noticed it too and turned to the screen. He had an idea. He felt that something was wrong with him, he felt... restricted. He had a bad feeling that he knew why this was happening. "Hey Mark, can you tilt the tablet to the left? You're tilted for me.", Jack lied. Mark obliged, and Jack struggled to hold onto his chair as his whole world seemed to tilt. "TILT IT BACK! STRAIGHTEN THE TABLET!", Jack yelled, and Mark immediately did, and Jack fell to the floor. "What just happened!?", Mark gaped, and Jack climbed into the chair and strapped himself in.
"I think I know what's wrong. I'm up in space, you're the astronaut in control now, you have to build the ship to save me. I'm not in control anymore, I'm not loaded in the game! I'm two dimensional! Whenever you tilt the tablet I go flyin' because I'm not in space right now, I only exist on the screen that you see! So when you tilt it, I'm tilted! I'm not loaded in space because you're not in space! I'm only loaded in the fookin' tablet!", Jack explained loudly. Mark gasped as he slightly tilted the tablet to check and Jack's spinning chair spun to have Jack facing the way Mark tilted the tablet. "No way, it has to be some kind of coincidence.", Mark insisted and Jack rolled his eyes.
The Irishman reached out towards the screen and placed his hands on it. To Jack, he was simply pressing his hands to the screen, but that was also true for Mark. "The screen is the camera... you're practically a cartoon!", Mark gasped and Jack nodded as he pulled away from the screen. "So basically...", Mark paused as he tried to think of something to say. "Crap there's no way to put it basically.", Mark grumbled. Jack sighed. "Well let's get t' building, shall we? I'm not getting any younger!", the Irishman said and Mark nodded in agreement.
Now he just had to figure out how to get the tablet into the assembly building without putting Jack through hell.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After carefully maneuvering into the assembly room with the tablet in hand, Mark approached a podium with a screen on it as ordered by Jack. "Okay, enter your name. Remember, it's Mark Kerman, not Mark Fischbach. It probably won't end well if you get it wrong.", Jack reminded, causing Mark to frown at Jack. "Okay, I said I needed your help, but you don't need to tell me to enter my name.", he grumbled, causing Jack to chuckle. "Sorry, I'm just used to being stranded in a world of idiots.", the Irishman explained, earning him another eye roll from Mark.
"Hey, wait a damn second! That suit guy told me a completely  different story about how you got stranded than the one you told me!", Mark pointed out and Jack's eyes narrowed. "I don't like that guy. Even before you got here I've always kept an eye on him. You should do the same. He might screw you over somehow.", Jack warned and Mark nodded in agreement.
This would not be easy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There it is! I never finished this, this is all I wrote, but it is one of the first actual pieces of writing that I actually made that I consider decent. This thing is also coming up on being one year old, yikes.
But that’s the work!

Twitch kicks off Science Week by streaming Sagan's 'Cosmos'
Prepare to see all kinds of science-y streams on Twitch next week. The streaming platform is holding a week-long celebration of all things science, starting with a marathon of Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. Twitch's Cosmos channel will broadcast all 13 episodes of the series twice -- the first one will begin on April 24th, 3PM Eastern, while the second run will start airing on April 27th, 5PM Eastern. Creators will also be able to co-stream the show, though, so check around if you want to hear some modern commentary on top of Sagan's dulcet tones.
After the second broadcast, the official Twitch channel will air a live Q&A with Ann Druyan, Cosmos co-creator and Sagan's wife. Druyan said she's "truly excited to share Cosmos... with the vast Twitch community." Her husband "wanted to tear down the walls that exclude most of us from the scientific experience," after all, "so that we could take the awesome revelations of science to heart." She added that "the power of the original Cosmos series, with its enduring appeal to every generation since, is evidence of how much we hunger to feel our connection to the universe."
The marathon and Druyan's interview aren't the only things you can look forward to. As part of Science Week, Twitch is also interviewing quite a lengthy list of prominent personalities in the field, including:
Matthew Buffington – Director of Public Affairs at NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley and host of NASA in Silicon Valley podcast
Ariane Cornell -- Head of Astronaut Strategy and Sales and Head of North American Sales for the New Glenn Rocket at Blue Origin
Scott Manley -- Astronomer and online gaming personality under the handle, "Szyzyg," best known for video content about science and video games like Kerbal Space Program
Pamela Gay -- Astronomer and Principal Investigator of CosmoQuest, a citizen science facility, and the Director of Technology and Citizen Science at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
Kishore Hari -- Science educator and director of Bay Area Science Festival, based out of the University of California, San Francisco, best known as one of the lead organizers of the global March for Science
Fraser Cain -- Publisher of Universe Today, one of the most visited space and astronomy news websites on the internet, which he founded in 1999. He's also the co- host of the long running Astronomy Cast podcast with Dr. Pamela Gay. Fraser is an advocate for citizen science in astronomy, and on the board of directors for Cosmoquest, which allows anyone to contribute to discoveries in space and astronomy.

Valve secrets spill over—including Half-Life 3—in new Steam documentary app
The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx is now live on Steam as a $10 download, and it’s a phenomenal look at the underbelly of Valve video game development, told with a wealth of inside access and a host of multimedia goodies.
The project, as led by journalist Geoff Keighley, is a years-in-the-making look at Valve’s journey to release a new Half-Life game, complete with stories about other attempts that never got off the ground. Separated into 12 “chapters,” the app is predominately driven by Keighley’s text, full of interviews and quotes, and every page comes with embedded image galleries and pictures to drive each point home.
Get ready for a Borealis-load of Valve secrets
An interactive slider chart lets you dig through a few surprises in Valve’s game-development timeline, which Keighley’s story describes at great length.

The app’s biggest dirt is arguably its confirmation of exactly what started and stopped within Valve on the way to getting Half-Life: Alyx out the door this March. That includes information on Half-Life 3—and it is a much firmer account of Valve’s history than what IGN reported earlier this year.
As described, however, this “HL3,” which began life in the early ’10s, would have been very different from what fans might have expected from a full-fledged Half-Life sequel. Inspired by Left 4 Dead, this non-VR version of Half-Life would have revolved around combat sequences through procedurally generated towers and buildings, chained together by crafted plot events.
A more plot-centric Half-Life project emerged within Valve in 2015, led in part by former series scribe Marc Laidlaw: a VR-exclusive game codenamed Borealis. (This followed the prototyping of a Half-Life arcade shooter, simply titled Shooter, that was made for possible inclusion in Valve’s VR toy kit The Lab, only to be canceled; we’ve reported on that one previously.)
Borealis would have taken place entirely on the boat of the same name while players “ricocheted in time back and forth” between various points in the Half-Life universe, including the series’ Seven Hour War. If that sounds familiar, its concept resembles the story Laidlaw eventually posted for fans, which many took to resemble his vision for a “Half-Life 3.” He left Valve shortly after the prototype failed to “gain traction,” Keighley writes.
Shortly before ground was broken on what became Half-Life: Alyx, Valve also had a “mini team” begin prototyping a Left 4 Dead sequel in late 2015, which was also shelved after “months of work.” (Its codename was “Hot Dog,” if you want to start digging through old Source Engine files for hints of it.) And other sections of the app talk about other canceled Valve games, including Left 4 Dead 3 (not to be confused with “Hot Dog”) and new, codenamed games like “A.R.T.I.” and “RPG.” (Today’s report also acknowledges a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 project that stalled when its team members shifted to help ship the first Left 4 Dead game.)
“The highest-paid blog post writers”
Keighley’s account of Valve’s history is blunt about the studio’s lack of significant game launches during the ’10s and about the issues they had in common—particularly that they all pulled the in-development Source 2 engine in different directions. “We sort of became the highest-paid blog post writers of all time,” longtime Valve writer Jay Pinkerton admits, while other staffers talk frankly about the studio’s reputation for spinning up multiple small projects and then watching them fall apart internally.
“We sort of had to collectively admit we were wrong on the premise that you will be happiest if you work on something you personally want to work on the most,” Valve developer Robin Walker tells Keighley, soundly rejecting the ethos that Valve has publicly carried as a torch for some time. The studio used a new Half-Life project as a way to focus the entire studio—even though, as we’ve previously reported, that project began life with more modest expectations in terms of length and content.
From there, Half-Life: Alyx‘s story picks up steam, intertwined with the studio’s vision for building VR hardware and experiences. The whole thing is a spoiler-filled exploration of how HL:A took shape, but most interesting is that the game’s biggest internal test ended with fellow Valve staffers giving a big thumbs-down to the ending. The production team sought permission to rebuild the narrative arc with a stunning ending, and Valve boss Gabe Newell greenlighted the shift, knowing it would delay HL:A‘s launch outside of the Valve Index hardware launch (which everyone had hoped would happen side-by-side).
And, yes, we finally have confirmation of what those two other VR games were that Newell bullishly announced in 2017: the aforementioned “A.R.T.I.” project, and something codenamed SimTrek, which Keighley only says was built in part by members of the original Kerbal Space Program team. Today’s news doesn’t clarify whether those projects may come back to life, however, and it doesn’t exactly say what may happen to In The Valley Of The Gods, a game absorbed as a Valve project when the studio acquired Campo Santo in 2018.
If you’re in desperate need to tour a famous building while locked up in quarantine, Geoff Keighley has your back in the form of this full-3D tour of Valve’s Bellevue, WA, headquarters.
Having been to Valve’s offices, I can tell you that quite a bit is left off limits; they operate multiple floors of office space, but we only get one floor, and a few rooms are entirely blocked out.
But it’s still fun to turn on “free-walk” mode and walk through its 3D recreation.
Geoff Keighley
A few hand-drawn art murals can be found in the tour, and they all have Sonic the Hedgehog in common for some reason. (Maybe because that game’s feature-length film launched one month before Half-Life: Alyx did.)
Geoff Keighley
I’m going to assume these whiteboards are covered in text that Keighley’s crew censored.
Geoff Keighley
If you’re a public visitor to Valve, you start your real-life tour here. Sadly, the app doesn’t let you go up the stairs to the cafeteria.
Geoff Keighley
The rest of the app is a doozy in terms of Valve history—including tantalizing hints about Valve’s vision for brain-connected hardware—so you’ll have to head to Keighley’s app, available now for $10 on Steam, to learn the rest and get access to exclusive galleries, prototype videos, and multimedia toys, including the above interactive tour of one floor of Valve’s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. And while the app doesn’t end with a promise of more Half-Life games to come, it strongly suggests such a future: “We’re not afraid of Half-Life no more,” one Valve staffer suggests. (And whether that project may come in VR or not remains to be seen.)

Kerbal Space Program 2 gets nuclear pulse rockets and metallic hydrogen fuel
Kerbal Space Program 2 is still rocketing toward launch sometime in the next thirteen months, and today brings a load of news about the spaceflight simulator. Publisher Private Division (a subsidiary of Take-Two) has announced a new US studio dedicated to work on future sandbox space games, and the developers have released a video showcasing snippets of gameplay and some of the (very) experimental new tech you'll be able to play with.
KSP2 will include a big focus on the experimental, near-future tech behind ideas like commuter spaceships and planetary colonies, as the developers explain. That includes tech like nuclear pulse rockets, which function basically how they sound - vessels get pushed along by the force of miniature nuclear explosions. Restrictions on nuclear testing ended those experiments in the real-world, but you'll be able to build rockets with the tech in KSP2.
We'll also get to build ships powered by metallic hydrogen, an experimental fuel type that's just past the current state of real-world tech. One of its benefits is that the exhaust can be directed by magnets without touching the physical rocket, letting the fuel burn far hotter without overheating the machinery.
