About the Frozen IV announcement (cont'd)
Considering that Jennifer Lee commented earlier that she was "blown away" by the concept for the sequel, if that included splitting it in two parts for a more fleshed out story and Disney actually *agreeing* to go forward with it, then it has to be a story that both the studio and the company really believe in 💜

Disney Making Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and Zootopia 2
In a recent earnings call, Disney announced some new animated sequels to beloved films that fans can look forward to in the future. Some make sense while others left fans scratching their heads. Disney announced they are working on Frozen 3 and Zootopia 2, franchises that make lots of sense to continue. They also said they are making Toy Story 5, which has divided fans of the series claiming the…

This headline is so funny to me like... imagine any producer of anything ever outright saying to the press "I don't think the sequel we're making is as good at the first, sorry :("

Am I the only one who doesn't like the news that we're apparently getting Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3? Unpopular opinion, but I think those are completely unnecessary and hope they go into development hell.

Want to know how I know Frozen 3 will most definitely not be great? The announcement of a Frozen 4.
The problem with Frozen 2 was that it had many, many ideas and they attempted, and utterly failed, to condense them into one singular linear story; the problem with Frozen 3 is that they "have so many ideas" that they realized they can't realistically condense them into one singular movie so their solution to "not repeat a frozen 2" is to instead push for ALL ideas to move forward which in turn has given them an overly lengthy cut.
Watching Frozen 1 in cinemas for the first time in a long while really reminded me how Frozen worked because it was very very simple and most of its heart was in the two "main" characters and how they navigated through life after a horrendous situation they were put through.
The heart of Frozen is not all the mystical and mythical elements that they can't get enough of attempting to push, hell, the most compelling part of Elsa as a character was just how raw and human she felt DESPITE having otherworldly powers.
I truly don't know which road they're taking the franchise through, but if the podcast and the books that have come out are anything to go by, it's straying way too far from what made the first movie compelling and enjoyable: its freaking simplicity.

About the Frozen IV announcement 🌻❄️
I gotta be honest and say this was completely unexpected so it was a tough piece of news to process. But I've landed on the following:
I've decided I won't slip into my cynical and skeptical self. It won't do anyone any good. On the contrary, I'll rejoice in having many years of Frozen content to come. If the rumours are true and Frozen IV really is the second movie in a two-parter story, I'm totally getting behind that because it means more story to be excited for and way less a case of Iger just saying "we ordered another Frozen story". I hope Frozen III and IV will feel like a natural continuation of I and II but at the same time have the chance to tell their own unique story.
I was at excitement-level 0/10 a few hours ago but I'm currently hovering around 5 🙂
I hope we'll get many more years of love for Frozen, Anna and Elsa!
💓🎉🥳

THIS IS THE SAME PLOT FOR FROZEN 2 AND THAT FILM WAS ANNOUNCED FOUR YEARS BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED IN 2019, AND THE PRODUCTION FOR THAT MOVIE WAS A NIGHTMARE. IT’S ALSO WORTH POINTING OUT THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY GONNA BE A DISNEY+ SERIES…

The way movies like Disenchanted (2022) and Wish (2023) have been welcomed by the Disney fandom makes it more and more evident those people don’t actually want what they claim they do:
They don’t want 2D animation;
They don’t want experimental animation techniques;
They don’t want simpler plots;
They don’t want old fashioned villains;
They probably wouldn’t want a love story if Disney gave them one because it’s not between the characters they want (people are literally rioting already because they want Helsa in Frozen III and IV)
Everything they want from Disney movies is for them to make them feel the same joy and wonder they felt while watching them at five years old. Otherwise, why would the entire 90s generation (me included) love Disney sequels to pieces although they’re so cheaply made?
But the thing is, that joy is never coming back. And even though you would never admit it to yourself, you actually dig the layered, Marvel-style plots and sharp, computer-made graphics that even animated movies have adopted nowadays. That’s why Miles Morales’ Spider-Man saga and TV shows like Arcane are being so successful now. The only reason why you think you want to bring back the elements I mentioned above is nostalgia. But the truth is that you don’t like them that much, and you would rather watch movies with Marvel-style plots and sharp, computer-made graphics, than whatever you used to enjoy in your childhood. And that’s okay!
But please, don’t cry outrage when a movie that’s actually different gets released. And most importantly, don’t pester people who like that movie with what you wanted it to be.
Sincerely.

So according to the COO of Disney, Jennifer Lee, Frozen 3 and Frozen 4 will be "two parts of one big story".
You know what that means....
Frozen: Infinity War
and
Frozen: Endgame

The risk/reward of just ignoring one sequel's mistakes in the next one
Ghostbusters Afterlife —
Tumblr media
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire —
Tumblr media
I've previously written on this blog about the unfortunate legacy of The Force Awakens and how its massive success paved the way for a veritable buttload of legacy sequels that made similar mistakes.
One example I cited was Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Among the things I hated there was the declaration that no ghosts had shown up anywhere for approximately 30 years, effectively negating any EU lore or personal imaginings of interim adventures. Instead, we're made to believe that ghosts ONLY appear when an apocalyptic threat is making them emerge.
This year's direct sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, just completely ignores all that. Ghosts can appear anywhere and any time regardless of whether a major threat is coming to somehow spawn them. In fact, we even see the library ghost from the opening of the original 1984 Ghostbusters has apparently just been floating around freely EVER SINCE THEN. She's just stayed in the New York Public Library the whole friggin' time! (Which is kind of ridiculous all by itself, but whatever.)
So that's certainly ONE way to deal with dumb/bad ideas introduced in legacy sequels; just kind of pretend the idea was wrong or that you never said it, and don't bother explaining yourself when you show the opposite to be true. :P I... kind of love that??? But I feel like I probably shouldn't, because they should probably have to justify why they claimed that stuff in the first place.
But can you imagine if the Star Wars sequels pulled this kind of thing?
The Rise of Skywalker certainly does take pains to undo some of The Last Jedi, but it also feels the need to acknowledge what that movie said and did. Like "Oh Rey — it IS true that your parents were nobodies, but your grandpa is still somebody." Imagine instead if The Rise of Skywalker had just treated it like "OF COURSE Luke never thought the Jedi were a mistake, and of course he didn't run away to die! He was on that planet to build a new Jedi Academy, silly! Didn't you notice?" And then they just never explained the discrepancy.
I think I might've loved that, LOL. But like I said... I probably shouldn't. :P
