I harvested my first head of lettuce of the year! I'm definitely going to do lettuce again next year. Considering how much a single head costs at the grocery store, it's a pretty sound investment. If I harvest just 3 more, the entire garden, soil included, will have paid for itself. Not bad for a few buckets hanging on a fence!

some times i see people talking about the Earth and climate change saying things like "now i know it is difficult to deal with utter hopelessness, terror, and visiting the thoughts of death"
and it's like wow I am so deeply sorry about the suffering. but...concern. Concern. Tell me, am I missing something important? Why do I feel a sense of hope for our planet? Am I a lonely fool? Have I been consumed by naïveté and misguided optimism?
That would be weird. It feels weird. It feels like I would be well suited to despair. My natural temperament is Mortal Terror making my body crushed for a thousand years at the bottom of the deepest trenches of the ocean. I've thought before "I can't live any more. This exceeds the tensile strength of the human spirit."
And then? After irreversible catastrophic failure of the soul, there is...what?
We try to imagine the future where we fight to save our home and it is very painful. The resistance feels so small and the machine of death feels so vast. But something's missing.
Everyone else is missing—the plants, trees, bugs, beasts, and creatures. Hello? Are the other humans seeing this? Nature wants you to know that she is not a princess in a tower. Look! Look at the chaos moving through every cell! Iterating! Adapting! Becoming! Thriving! Watch the pollinators tirelessly at work, observe the mycorrhizal network in the forest floor distributing the rich fruits of decay and photosynthesis for every inhabitant! Pay attention! We belong here too. They feed and shelter us, give us the very air we breathe, and in return we plant and propagate, cull, thin, and burn, shape, trample, till, shepherd and sprout seeds. Our species can look toward the future, to the world of our descendants. We can call every plant and animal by name and teach our children to use and care for them responsibly. We can feel this anger, pain, and grief on behalf of the family of Life, OUR family, and we can love the smallest beetle and the humblest moss.
Look at it! This thing is nothing like me, it does not benefit me, it has no use or purpose for me, but LOOK at it! Look at its intricate structure! Look at the marvelousness of its behaviors and biological functions! Look at its uniqueness throughout the whole universe! Look at it, and see its infinite value!
I saved a baby tree from the scorching hot gravel of a parking lot. I watched it grow and thrive in the hands of its caretaker. Many more followed, trees and herbs and flowers, rescued and carefully placed in cups and old tubs that once held yogurt and sour cream. This is so strange, I thought. They're everywhere, offering themselves for free, and no one thinks to take them. Everyone thinks transplanting a tree is hard and that nothing grows on the edge of the pavement but weeds. But it's so easy??? This is weird. Plant Nurseries Hate Her: Get Free Plants With This One Weird Trick.
I protected an old barren garden patch where nothing had thrived from being mowed and weed-whacked, and transplanted little plants that I found. I marveled at the bees that came. Chicory bloomed, then asters and goldenrod. I shed actual tears over a spicebush swallowtail. I ordered some milkweed from the internet, and the monarchs came for them. Less then twenty-five bucks for a divine experience like this. Wow, everyone else really needs to know!
I started volunteering at a nature center, and was allowed to transplant flowers where they sprouted in inopportune locations. I collected tons of seeds all fall and winter long.
There is much, much more, all of it bigger than I ever would have imagined. But this spring there were more birds, in number and in species, than I'd ever seen in my back yard before. Chickadees, swallows, finches, nuthatches, jays, cardinals, warblers, sparrows, woodpeckers of every kind...I remembered just a couple years prior when all I ever saw out there was a couple grackles or starlings or robins, with the occasional sparrow. Those birds come in flocks rather than couples now. And then the bumblebee arrived. An American bumblebee, endangered now, a queen. For a few days she was always out there, would fly out and buzz around me when I came out to tend to my now-innumerable plants. It's nesting time for them. She chose this place I was creating. She saw that this place would take care of her.
A week ago, I discovered wild strawberries growing in my Mamaw's driveway. I found lyreleaf sage growing beside a gravel road. I've become a master of transplanting; I took several of each home. Yesterday, I saw a tiny, metallic blue bee, an Osmia mason bee. Today, I saw an oriole and a strange, very fancy fly. I see something new almost every day. Every day I am being irreversibly changed as a person. How did I ever fail to see how much this matters?
I said I feel hope...do I feel it? I don't think it's a feeling, I think it's a practice. It's being part of our communities and our ecosystems. Nature's interconnectedness is both reality and example: to survive, we take care of one another. And when one member of the community helps another thrive, it creates a cascade that increases the thriving of all. Just by existing, you help us all survive.
You can only take care of so many plants before you have to give some away. You can only hold so much knowledge before you have to give it away. I gave seeds to a dozen different flowers to my next-door neighbor and she invited me inside and wouldn't let me leave without food, and we talked about plants and trees. A family friend lets me have goats' milk and heirloom vegetables in exchange for help around the farm, and I listen to him talk about trees, bugs, and soil and learn so much I feel like I'm about to explode from knowledge.
Being a caretaker is unavoidably a community-oriented, community-forming thing. You can't grow plants all by yourself. Your garden will make too many tomatoes. Share them. Your milkweed will make hundreds and hundreds of seeds. Spread them. Wild blackberries invite you to take and eat. Your lonely retired neighbor invites you to talk and keep her company. Once you grow delicious fruits or little oak trees, you always have a reason to greet someone and say, "Look, it is a gift!"
We're not alone. We are not separate. We take care of each other. Every species, every individual. A single action of caretaking creates a cascade effect of thriving. A single unapologetic love for a creature creates a blossom of curiosity and fascination in everyone surrounding. It's so powerful.
As my chemical romance says "I am not afraid to keep on living"

Anyone that follows me, if you are planning on supporting Stranger Things 5, do us all a favour and unfollow me.
Noah Schnapp & Brett Gelman have been absolutely relishing in the genocide of Palestinians from their own indigenous land. They think it's funny. They sit there laughing while whole families and generations are being mercilessly wiped out.
Under the illegal occupation of Palestine, the terrorist regime of Izzrheil:
Palestinians cannot even gather veggies, fruits & herbs growing on THEIR INDIGENOUS LAND
Palestinians cannot go to certain places in THEIR OWN INDIGENOUS LAND
Palestinians are mocked, taunted, injured & k!lled by illegal Zionist settlers
Israelis urinated on Palestinian corpses
Israelis baked a Palestinian baby in an oven
Israelis r*ped underaged boys and girls that were unlawfully arrested & in their custody
Israelis have broken international law multiple times using their own hostages and Palestinians as human shields
Israelis have used white phosphorus on civilians
Israelis have bombed legally sanctioned hospitals
Israelis bombed borders & safe zones that THEY FORCED PALESTINIANS TO FLEE TO
Israelis left dozens of Palestinian babies to die in the NICU
Israelis have CELEBRATED & had WATCH PARTIES while Palestinians were being k!lled & forcibly removed from their own homes
Israelis are currently planning a "re-colonization" of Gaza where they wish to build a theme park or settlements on the bodies of indigenous Palestinians
They have broken MULTIPLE international laws due to their entitlement from U.S, diplomatic, financial and military aid
Israelis are 100% committing genocide
As a historian, I have been documenting each and every post, article, video, celebrity & socmed user for the future when people will finally admit that THIS IS WRONG.
Schnapp & Gelman have been the loudest voices in support of this Holocaust.
BOYCOTT STRANGER THINGS 5 NOW

What would the first kiss between the two be like?
Atalanta
Tumblr media
Atalanta's kisses are very dominant. Imagine this: You've been with her for a while, and she knows she can trust you not to make a fuss when she takes you out for the first time. Still, she takes precautions. She picks a fancy restaurant she knows you will like and rents it out for the night, filling it with all her own people and hiring some of Zachariah's men to either guard you both or keep you from running. She'll order you something beautiful to wear, something to match her own suit, to mark you both as belonging to the other. Her driver takes you both to the restaurant and she escorts you inside, her arm wrapped around your waist, letting you know that as long as you behave and stay calm, things will be peaceful tonight.
Dinner is actually okay. The food is good and Atalanta honestly is nice company. You've gotten used to her over the last few months. She is smart and witty and makes you laugh over and over again, and you relax as the night goes on. After dinner, she is so pleased with you that when you propose taking a short walk around the block, she only hesitates for a second before allowing it. The night is clear and cool, and when you shiver, she drapes her own blazer around your shoulders to keep you warm. The bright lights of the city and the sights of all the other lovers in the area take you over. Your heart aches, and you turn to her with your lips slightly parted. You want this, but you don't know if you can say it.
She understands. Slowly, she pulls you out of sight of the public and puts her hand on your waist, looking into your eyes for any sign of resistance or discomfort. When she sees none, she moves in. Her lips are soft when they press against yours, and she instantly takes control, pulling you closer to her as she takes your chin in her hand, keeping you gently in place. She tastes vaguely of honey, the same flavor as her lip balm, and she sucks gently on your bottom lip.
When the moment is over, she moves away from your lips, kissing across your cheek and jawline to make it to your ear, whispering tenderly, "Let us head home, Darling. I want to finish this in our bedroom."
Vivien
Tumblr media
After he has been watching you for a while, and you both have had several friendly conversations when you come to buy plants at his shop, Vivien shyly asks you on a date, hoping beyond hope that you'll say yes. When you agree, his face lights up like you just told him he won the lottery. He immediately starts chattering about where to go, wanting to find a location and activity that suits your individual preferences. You both eventually settle on a picnic in the park, and he begs to be able to make the picnic food from the fresh herbs in his garden.
Come the weekend, you meet Vivien in the grassy area of the park overlooking the playground. He spreads out a giant blanket for the two of you to lay on, and pulls out all the food he made. Sheepishly, he admits that he was up late the night before perfecting recipes. He truly went all out. You both enjoy Caprese salad, bread he baked with some sort of herb dipping oil, fresh fruit, and strawberry hand pies with vanilla glaze. You watch small children laugh and play on the playground, point out shapes in the clouds, and kick around a plastic ball you bought. His hair looks so bright in the sun but his smile is brighter.
When Vivien wants to kiss you, you can tell. He stares at your lips, trying to work up the courage to ask for your consent. When he is ready, he asks with a hesitant "Can I kiss you?", eyes pleading for your affirmative. When you agree he looks a tad shocked, but eagerly moves in to take advantage of the opportunity. His kiss is gentle at first, like he is afraid you'll pull back at any moment and order him away from you, but once he can tell you're enjoying it, he grows bolder. His excitement is electric and contagious, and before you know it, you both are lying down on the blanket, him on top of you, his leg between yours, his hands cupping your face like he is holding the entire world in his hands. You both are breathing hard when he pulls back and asks, "Can I... can I kiss you again? Please?"

Secular Celebrations - Midsummer
Tumblr media
After Beltane comes Midsummer, which some also call Litha, mid to late June. I call it “probably already too hot to go outside.” I’m not exactly a summertime person to begin with and I live in Virginia, in the middle of a swamp. So the rest of you can enjoy Midsummer. I’m going to be spending it indoors where the air conditioning is.
Midsummer is the summer solstice, the middle of the growing season, the highest point of high summer. It’s a time to celebrate the hard work we’ve done, take a bit of ease while the weather is pleasant, and have a good romp before we have to start bringing in the harvests in August. If you work with solar magic or the Fair Folk, this is your holiday. Both of these themes run deep and strong through Midsummer, along with the urge to get outside and revel in the beauty of nature at peak flourish.
So enjoy Midsummer first and foremost by getting outside...if you can. If it’s too damn hot, yanno, be realistic. But at least make an effort if you enjoy the hotter weather and it’s not dangerous to be out. Go to your favorite park, maybe go to the beach, go hiking, go to a pick-your-own fruit farm, have a picnic, attend a fair or a carnival, do some stargazing. All this assumes a lot about public safety since we’re still living in the COVID era, so use your good judgement. If it’s not safe to be around crowds, try to focus on solo activities or things you can do in the safety of your home or your backyard.
This is another good time for herb-picking. If you have a garden, your plants should be producing by this point, and you can start pruning your plants and drying those trimmings for use in your craft. This is actually my favorite part of the summer. I love putting up those bundles of plants and flowers to dry, I love the look of them in my home, and I love the satisfaction of putting the dried material into jars for storage. And hey, if you’re not growing anything, you can still enjoy this by picking up fresh herbs from the supermarket or the local garden store and drying them.
You can also go herb gathering like I mentioned for Beltane, since different plants will be in season. Again, always observe permission and best practices if you’re going to do this. And always make sure you label your bundles and your jars for easy identification.
On a practical note, if you’re going to be doing things outside for Midsummer, always make sure you wear sunscreen and adequate clothing to avoid too much UV exposure, including a face covering. Remember to hydrate properly throughout the day, be careful with your alcohol intake, and if you start to feel tired or woozy, or if you stop sweating, get out of the sun IMMEDIATELY. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are no joke, witches. Take care of yourselves out there.
And speaking of herbs and ways of keeping cool, one of the things I really enjoy doing in the summertime is making magical iced teas. I know some of my overseas listeners might be blinking in confusion right about now, so if you’ve never heard of this, let me enlighten you. In the US, particularly in the South, we’re very fond of iced tea. Now, that doesn’t mean cold tea, it’s tea that’s been sweetened and chilled, and it’s usually served over ice with lemon or mint leaves, depending on the recipe. This is a fun and easy herbal potion that anyone can make. You just need a pitcher of hot water, some herbal tea bags, some sugar or honey, and whatever flavorings you want to add.
Using several teabags or a big pouch of looseleaf tea, mix up a batch of tea that’s a little stronger than you’d usually make for a hot cuppa. Stir in sugar or honey until it’s as sweet as you like it - we usually go a step or two sweeter than you’d think. Then add whatever flavorings you like. And you can use just about anything for this. I’m partial to a nice blend of chamomile and peppermint with a good dollop of honey, or white tea with jasmine, or spearmint and elderflower, or hibiscus and raspberry. Lavender and lemon is another popular recipe, if you can get your hands on culinary lavender. (And yes, there IS a difference between lavender grown for the kitchen and lavender grown for aromatherapy purposes, so shop carefully.) Feel free to make drinks that correspond to magical purposes, too. Health, wealth, happiness, whatever you like. Sweet iced potions? Yes please!
This can be stretched to alcoholic drinks too, if you’re partial. I mean, what are we even doing with our craft if we’re not stirring spells into sangria or joining the midnight margarita club, right? My husband makes a delightful little cocktail he calls a Gardener’s Tonic - basically a gin and tonic with muddled sweet basil and lime juice and a slice of cucumber. Just make sure that when you’re enjoying your alcoholic alchemy, you’re doing so responsibly.
So once you’ve got your drink of choice and you’ve had a chance to relax, look to your homestead. Tend that garden, like I mentioned before. Attend to any pest problems you might be having, or any home repairs that might need doing. Try not to put things off. Once autumn arrives, you may find that you’re too busy. Reorganize your witchy supplies. If you’ve got new material or new tools coming in, try to declutter and get rid of anything that’s gone stale or sour, or anything that’s used up. Check your jars for signs of mold and give your accoutrements a good cleaning.
If you feel that kitchen witch itch, there’s a cream for that….it’s in the fridge next to the milk. (I apologize for NOTHING.) You can check on the beverages you started back around Beltane, or start a batch if you didn’t do one in the spring. You can start a sourdough, since that seems to be all the rage right now, or make preserves and jams with those early fruits and berries. Make food or homemade sweet with local produce and local honey. Oh and bless the bees and the pollinators while you’re at it! Bless their little hearts, they bring so much sweetness to the world, they deserve thanks for their hard work.
Midsummer is a big holiday for picnics, so if you can have one, definitely do it, even if it’s just on your back porch. If you happen to have a fenced yard and a tent to work with, maybe try an overnight campout just for fun. My dad used to do this all the time when my brother and I were kids. We’d set up a tent in the backyard, he’d drag out a TV and VCR on extension cords, and we’d stay up half the night watching movies and eating junk food. Hey, we were suburban kids, my dad’s idea of “roughing it” was having no remote for the TV. It was super fun, and if you can manage something like this, I definitely recommend it to witches with little ones. Lot of good memories there, if they’re inclined to such things.
Of course, summer isn’t all clear skies and sunshine. Sometimes it rains. But heck, that can be just as much fun. Apart from the obvious option of gathering the rainwater for magical purposes, have you ever gone out in the rain on purpose? When it’s warm out and the rain is coming down in nice fat drops and you’re wearing stuff that can stand a little soaking, few things are more fun than running around and getting absolutely drenched. I’ve got a few fond memories of walking in the woods during rainstorms with my bestie from middle school. There’s a saying that goes, “Life isn’t about avoiding the storms, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” If there’s not a danger of lightning, I definitely recommend giving it a try. It’s really kind of exhilarating.
Midsummer is the longest day of the year. It’s the day when we see the most light, the earliest sunrise, the latest sunset. Meditate on how you can bring more light and positivity into your life, and how you can have a positive impact on the lives of others, on your community, and the world in general. Think about your productivity, your projects, your path to personal growth. How are things going? Is there anything that feels stuck that needs to be addressed? Where can you modify your outlook to something more optimistic, and where do you maybe need to take off the rose-colored glasses and be more of a realist? All things to contemplate while you’re sipping that magical iced tea potion.

Embracing the Midsummer Sun: Exploring the Pagan Holiday Litha
As the summer solstice approaches, pagan communities around the world eagerly anticipate the celebration of Litha, a joyous holiday that marks the height of the sun's power and the peak of the summer season. With roots deeply intertwined in ancient traditions, Litha is a time of merriment, connection to nature, and honoring the abundant energy of the sun. In this blog post, we will delve into the significance of Litha, its customs, and how you can embrace this radiant festival in your own pagan practice.
Understanding Litha
Litha, also known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice, is celebrated annually on or around June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere (or December 21st in the Southern Hemisphere). It is a time when the sun reaches its zenith, gracing us with the longest day and the shortest night of the year. In pagan belief systems, Litha represents the height of the sun god's power and the triumph of light over darkness.
Symbolism and Themes
Sun Energy: Litha revolves around the sun's energy and the abundant life force it bestows upon the Earth. It is a time of honoring the power of the sun and embracing its warmth, vitality, and life-giving qualities.
Nature's Bounty: Litha is closely associated with the bountiful harvest and the flourishing of the natural world. It's a time to appreciate the abundance of fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and to connect with the vibrant energy of the Earth.
Balance of Opposites: The summer solstice represents the perfect balance between light and dark, as the sun reaches its peak before gradually waning. Litha reminds us of the importance of finding harmony within ourselves and in our surroundings.
Ways to Celebrate Litha
Sun Rituals: Welcome the sunrise or sunset on Litha by performing a simple ritual to honor the sun. Offerings of flowers, herbs, or handmade sun symbols can be presented, expressing gratitude for its warmth and light.
Bonfires and Fire Magic: Fire is central to Litha celebrations. Ignite a bonfire or light candles to represent the sun's fiery energy. Dance around the flames, practice fire scrying, or perform fire-related spells to harness the element's transformative power.
Nature Communion: Spend time in nature, whether in a garden, park, or the wilderness, and connect with the Earth's abundance. Meditate, picnic, or perform outdoor rituals, embracing the vibrant energy of the season.
Herb Gathering: Litha is an ideal time to gather and harvest herbs at their peak potency. Select plants such as St. John's Wort, lavender, or chamomile, associated with sun energy and healing, to use in spellwork, sachets, or herbal remedies.
Celebratory Feasts: Prepare a feast using seasonal produce, incorporating sun-shaped foods, such as sunflower seeds or citrus fruits. Share a meal with loved ones, expressing gratitude for the Earth's bounty and the nourishment it provides.
Litha, the pagan holiday of Midsummer, invites us to celebrate the sun's radiant energy and the abundance of the summer season. As we embrace the longest day of the year, we honor the sun's power, connect with nature's bounty, and seek balance within ourselves and the world around us. Whether through rituals, bonfires, nature communions, or feasts, Litha offers a vibrant and joyous opportunity to celebrate life's flourishing and the unity of the natural and spiritual realms. Embrace the warmth of the sun, bask in nature's beauty, and allow Litha to illuminate your pagan practice.

Spring Equinox
The spring equinox takes place between March 19 and March 22. That may be the official date, but when does spring really start? When do you begin to notice that it's spring?
As we come into spring we start to notice things. Leaves growing back on the trees, birds coming back again, bugs starting to come out, maybe even flowers sprouting. But the weather is still quite cold, and we may think, Is it spring already?
I began to notice the incoming spring at the beginning of March. Birds were out rustling in the trees, butterflies, wasps, and bees came out, and my young blackberry bush began to sprout leaves. The weather also got about 10 degrees warmer. For me, this was the start of spring. But I still choose the celebrate the equinox on the official date. Why? Because I always have, and because it gives me to prepare.
And that's what the spring equinox is all about. Preparing to take action towards the goals you set during the winter. It's a time of sowing seeds, literally and metaphorically.
How Can You Celebrate The Spring Equinox?
Sow your seeds
Literally: plant the fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers, or whatever else it is you plan to grow this season. Get your hands in the dirt and connect with the earth and the new spring time.
Metaphorically: Set the intentions you have for this coming season. Quarterly goals are great for all areas of life. What goals do you want to accomplish in the next 3 months? Make a plan for what you're going to do to accomplish them. You might chose to keep your goals aligned with the spring season. In this case, here are some ideas:
~ New ideas and projects. That new art project you see in your mind, or that new business idea you've been dreaming up. Maybe someone asked you to collaborate on an idea, now is a time to say yes.
~ Growth. Personal, business, family, any goal you have that involves something growing and/or improving.
~ Gardening. Maybe you want to start a small garden, or add a new plant to an existing one.
~ Community. Litter clean up projects, community gardening projects, fundraisers for causes around your area. Spring is a good time to bring the community together.
Have a picnic or cookout with family and/or friends
Celebrate the spring time with your family and/or friends. Cook or bake some foods that are in season at this time and enjoy the weather together. You can find tons of lists with a quick search about what foods are in season. You can also visit a local farmers market if possible!
Spring cleaning
This is definitely one you hear all the time, but it's a good one! What better way to bring in the new season than getting rid of the dust and clutter from the previous? Here are some ideas:
~Physically clean your area. Your house, your yard, or even just your bedroom. Make a project of it if you'd rather. Pick a different area to clean each day, or whatever time block works best for you. Write them down on a checklist with the day you plan them, and check them off when you've done them. This will actually help you stay motivated for it too, every time you check one off the list.
~ Cleanse your area. Whether it be with smoke, sound, crystals, words, or whatever other method you choose to use.
~ Switch up or tidy up your altar if you have one.
~ Clean out your inbox. Emails, text messages, social media notifications, clean out everything you don't need. Unfollow those people who mess up your feed, block those negative messages, unsubscribe from unwanted emails.
Spend some time outside. Go on a hike, watch the sunrise or sunset, visit a local park. Stargaze after dark, look for constellations and planets. There's a couple of good apps that help with this, Skyview and Stellarium. I personally use Stellarium.
Do some magic. Spring is a great time to do manifestation, workings around friendship, love, and community, workings to bring in abundance and wealth, workings for health, and workings to aid in personal growth. I'll be posting one of my favorite spring time workings soon!
Give spring time offerings to the deities and spirits you work with. Flowers, leaves, acorns, honey, fresh fruits, baked goods, milk, spring inspired art.
These are just a few ideas that come from my view of spring. I encourage everyone to look at how they view the spring time and figure out what works for them!

Late Shift (Danbrey)
The winner of the "creatures and people" prompt poll was: A vampire who works the night shift at a gas station
Anywhere else, Dani would get in serious trouble for adding fresh herbs to the donut case offerings at four-thirty am.
Amnesty Lodge, with its attached gas station, does things a little differently.  For starters, the head cook at the Lodge restaurant refuses to let them sell the standard gas station snacks without adding a few of his own into the mix. Hence the fairly fresh batch of doughnuts that he dropped off fifteen minutes ago. Dani’s basil plant has been growing even wilder this year, and she worked out that a sprinkle of basil makes the lemon filled donuts–even the ones Barclay doesn’t make–taste a million times better.
At least, that’s what customers tell them. Dani hasn’t eaten a donut since 1964.
Even when Stokers Famous Tonic became mainstream, allowing vampires to eat human food without getting violently ill, it’s not always cheap to get your hands on. And Dani likes to save hers for the fresh fruit from the garden, or when Barclay wants a recipe tester or Mama invites her for an early-morning cup of tea.
Or, if she plays her cards right, dinner with her favorite regular.
The door opens and the object of her dinner plans walks in, with far more energy than most humans have in the darkness of the morning.
“Hi Dani!” Aubrey waves. She’s brightened the flame-orange streak in her hair since Friday, making the black curls around it shine like a raven in the sun.
“Hi” Dani is relieved, not for the first time, that she can no longer blush, as Aubrey bends over to grab a Double Shot Oatmilk Monster Energy Coffee. She’s in her stage outfit, black dress jacket with studs sewn on the shoulders, and shorts and white dress shirt that look like someone ripped the arms and legs from a tuxedo.
Aubrey looks over her shoulder with a smile and Dani pretends to find a spot on the counter to clean with her nail.
“Just the usual please, if you’ve got it” The magician sets the drink on the counter. Dani grabs a waffle sandwich from the warming station; eggs, cheese, and hot sauce on a slightly sweet waffle, the kind Barclay makes in huge batches and then freezes.
“We do. Did you just get back from a show?”
“Nope” Aubrey leans on the counter, allowing Dani to see the bra peeking through the dress shirt, “heading to one. They booked me for a big brunch show at some country club in Huntington but they want me there, like, super duper early. Oh, wait, do you have baby carrots today?”
“Ummm” Dani glances at the chilled food display, “nope. Shipments are still kind of weird. Sorry.”
“Dr. Harris Bonkers will live without them. I’ve got other stuff to bribe him with to stay calm in the car.” She takes her change, but doesn’t move her hand right away. Instead she adds, “But you’re gonna owe him nose pets the next time he comes in.”
“I can handle that. Break a leg at the show.”
“Always do.” Aubrey gives her a wink and heads out into the parking lot, leaving her to rest her chin in her hands and sigh at the candy display.
—----------------------------------------------------------------
Aubrey’s totally going to do it. She’s going to ask Dani out when she stops for gas today. She’s made this promise to herself every day for the last two weeks, but gosh-darnit today she means it.
Dr. Harris Bonkers, PhD, runs circles around her feet as she swipes on black lipstick and stamps on her eyeliner.
“Just a sec buddy, I’m almost done.”
A honk in reply.
“Look, if I had my way I’d spend all day petting you, but I need to get groceries and you’re not allowed in Leo’s after the banana incident.” She crouches down pets the rabbit’s nose, “but you’re coming with me tonight even though we don’t have a show. I’m gonna need emotional support for this. You gonna be my wingman?”
She moves her hand back a half-inch, and he immediately bumps it with his nose.
“Thanks doctor, knew I could count on you.”
—-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dani is dumping blood orange syrup into the slushee machine when Aubrey walks in. The magician makes a bee-line for drinks, Dr. Harris Bonkers hopping behind her. The white rabbit is close to the size of a Corgi, sporting his black harness with flames on the sides as his claws click on the tile.
Technically he’s not supposed to be in here, but Mama has never booted him when she’s spotted him inside the Lodge or the restaurant, and Dani figures people who are stopping for gas at eleven at night have more on their minds than complaining about a fluffy bunny.
She heads over to the counter and Aubrey follows her, setting her Cherry Coke next to the sign for the Kepler Trunk or Treat.
“That all for tonight?”
“Yep” Aubrey says a bit too cheerfully. She’s worrying the chain of her necklace, something Dani wishes she would do less or do much more, depending on how in control of herself she’s feeling that night.
She has such a gorgeous neck.
Oh no that’s too creepy.
“Anything for the doctor?”
“Nah, he got an apple slice earlier–Dr. Harris Bonkers you put that down.” She disappears from view, reappearing with a pack of Double Bubble in hand. There are two, square teeth marks in it.
“This too. Sorry, he really likes the smell of bubblegum.”
“Silly bunny, that’s not for you. And don’t worry about paying for it, it’s like a buck and also Indrid will eat the stuff that didn’t get chomped.”
Aubrey laughs, “Thanks. Um, so, I’m doing shows at the Kepler Fall Festival this weekend. One at eleven and one at three. I know your schedule is probably weird because you work so late here but, um, I realized I’d never actually invited you to one of my shows. This one is going to be super freaking cool, I made up some Halloween tricks and everything. Do you know it’s weirdly hard to make a pumpkin disappear? Uh, anyway, just thought I’d ask.”
If Dani goes, there’s a very high chance she’ll get a serious sunburn.
Aubrey smiles hopefully, the expression crinkling her nose and making Dani want to lean over and kiss it.
“I’ll be there.”
—-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dani wasn’t at the first so, and with five minutes to go before the second one starts, Aubrey’s worried she won’t show. She so rarely sees the other woman around the Lodge during the day, like she sleeps through it, and it was silly of her to think she’d see her now.
She straightens Dr. Harris Bonker’s skull and crossbones tie, looks at the crowd and doesn’t see her.  So she straightens out her cuffs and looks again,
Dani is there, in a seat in the back row. Her blonde hair falls over her shoulders, and she’s wearing a long, mint-green dress, brown boots up to her knee, lacy green gloves to her elbow, and is carrying a green and white striped parasol. She looks so cool and hot, how the hell is Aubrey supposed to focus on anything else?
Then again, Dani clearly made time to come see her perform.
The festival emcee announces her name. So she strides out to give the best performance of her life.
—-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dani is pruning her night-blooming jasmine when she hears it; the unmistakable sound of something munching her collards.
“Hey Dani, have you seen-”
She holds up a hand to shush Barclay, “Can you see what’s making that noise at all?”
“Uhhhhh” the cook scans the beds, then raises his eyebrows, “unless my eyes are going, it’s Dr. Harris Bonkers.”
“What the hell?” Dani slips into the next row and finds Barclay is right; the massive rabbit is happily munching a big, green leaf without a care in the world.
“He must have hopped out the Lodge door.”
Barclay shakes his head, “Aubrey hasn’t been here since this morning, and I saw her leave with him in her arms. And her car isn’t in the lot now. He must have run away from home.”
Dani frowns, “Her apartment is three blocks from here. That’s a long ways for you to have gone, doctor.”
“C’mon little guy, let’s get you into the Lodge and give Aubrey a call. She’s probably worried sick.” Barclay bends down but the rabbit swiftly hops away, leaf still in its mouth.
“He’s right, we–whoops” Dani makes a grab for him, but he darts between her legs.
After ten minutes of failing to catch him, Dani is even more impressed with the fact Aubrey trained him for her act. Because if he doesn’t want to do something, there seems to be no way to make him do it.
“Hang on, I have an idea. Stay here and make sure he doesn’t run into the woods.”
Dani looks around, then turns into a bat and zips across to the gas station, grabs a pack of gum, and runs back to the Lodge garden. She kneels and calls, “Doctor, look what I’ve got.”
The rabbit, done with it’s collard, sniffs the air and turns towards her.
“It’s your favorite” She holds out the pack and the rabbit hops forward, bobbing now and then like he suspects a trap. Only when he gets his teeth on the wrapper is Dani able to scoop him into her arms.
He snorts, annoyed, as Dani passes Barclay the gum, “can you toss that or give it to Indrid? I’n gonna go call Aubrey.”
Dr Harris Bonkers explores her room as Dani picks up the landline and dials. Three tries over fifteen minutes leads to nothing. Kepler is in the NRQZ; if Aubrey’s not at home, Dani’s going to have a hell of a time getting a hold of her.
She keeps trying until it’s time to go to work, at which point she sticks the rabbit in a small laundry basket and carries him over to the gas station with her. After several attempts to get out, he calms when she gives him a few baby carrots and turns on the audiobook of Bunnicula on her phone (it helps her fall asleep).
Around midnight, the door dings and Aubrey walks in, looking more haggard than Dani’s ever seen her.
“I” she sniffs, wiping her eye, “I was wondering if you’d maybe seen Dr. Harris Bonkers? He, he got out while I was asleep earlier and I, I looked all over the neighborhood and I can’t, can’t”
“Hey, fireblossom, it’s okay.” Dani hurries around the counter a tad faster than a human should, “we found him in the garden. He’s behind the counter.”
“Ohthankfuckinggod.” Aubrey collapses against her, hugging her, “I was so worried, thank you so much, I owe you, like, big time.”
Dani hugs her back, takes a deep breath, and says, “How about dinner tomorrow?”
Aubrey looks up at her and grins, “I was hoping you’d say that” she kisses her nose, “and it’s cute that you already have a pet name for me.”
“Look, I have a lot of free time during work and it’s more fun to think about you than rearrange the candy bars again.” Dani kisses her cheek, “here, the doctor is waiting for you.”
They find the rabbit lounging, legs out, as the story drifts from the nearby phone.
“You are in big trouble young man” Aubrey scoops him up and holds him tight, “you jerk, never ever scare me like that again. You’re lucky Dani found you and not a coyote. Or the Johnson’s cat.” She pauses, listening, “awww, Dani figured out your favorite book.” She smiles like a thousand stars as she says, “I loved that one as a kid. I’ve always been a big fan of vampires.”
Dani licks a fang and kisses Aubrey on the cheek again, making her laugh, “Then I have another really good piece of news for you.”

Okay, because apparently this is SUPER difficult to understand for some 'experts' here...
The Spring Court is SUSTAINED by Tamlin's/its High Lord's magic. That's why it's always spring. Same for Winter and Summer.
The flowers of Spring Court do not really require 'gardening'. They don't require cultivation. They don't require that, which Elain loves the most--the work, the dirt, the watching of the fruits of her labour coming alive, the changing of the seasons, the cycles of life.
She is not going to be doing what she loves in Spring. It's all artificial. The 'sunshine' that everyone thinks she wants and needs is artificial there. The flowers just bloom. Nothing is needed to sustain them, other than magic.
That's the crux of the matter--Elain loves gardening because it brings joy and colour into her life. Because it's death and rebirth and toiling and failing and succeeding. Because in her hovel, that was the one little spot of beauty and escape. Because the first thing that she did even when she was in semi-catatonic state after being Made, was plant some herbs, as Feyre reminded her that 'the herbs you planted are coming up nicely'.
She doesn't WANT a ready-made, microwavable garden that's ready in 3 minutes.
She stated herself that 'the world needs more gardens' -- the gardens that she wants to PLANT. She never said that she wants to be in a place where everything is just given to her. She wants to spread that art and use her abilities out in the world--not in a place that blooms forever.
Would it not make MORE sense that Elain would revive, plant and cultivate the gardens and parks of a long-forgotten Court that once brimmed with life and greenery, and now is nothing but barren rock?
Tamlin doesn't need more gardens. But the world does.

Riverside Eatery
Close to the park, where the river that feeds the lake winds out before curling back into the perimeter of the woods, a restaurant lies on the edge, held up by pier supports. It hosts a balcony that over looks the river on two levels, one closer to the water on a lower floor, with cobblestone steps that lead up to the main part of the restaurant, or a path of seashell embedded limestone, which follows the river with a metal, decorative fence, and snakes it's way back to the main road.
The second floor also hosts an outdoor area, a second balcony to see the water from higher up, as well as a wraparound on the other side if a person prefers to see the foliage of the nearby park instead. Inside is decorated warmly, the walls brimming with familial photos, bright pops of color, in blues browns and oranges. It is well furnished, but not cramped, and smells like spices and herbs and fruits. There is plenty of seating inside as well, and an open window to see into the kitchen. Most of the time, when a beloved regular enters, the chefs may greet them with a call and a wave.
The food changes often, but the plates you get are large and filling and then some. Most of the food is a fusion between Pacific Island and Polynesian, with South American and Dominican delicacies, a combo befitting the two chefs who run Riverside. The flavors are often spicy and fruity and sweet and savory, depending on the dish, but most are intense and enjoyable. They offer a selection of other foods and more commonplace meals as well, to sate most everyone, so most may find a dish they love.
The family is run by the Rivera-Flores Family, a hardworking husband and wife, and their children. Their eldest helped for the longest time with the running of the restaurant as a waiter, but eight years ago he disappeared for a few months, and seven years ago, he vanished entirely and hasn't been seen since. The family still mourns him, and has an offrenda assembled for him as well as a small, colorful memorial on the lower level.
Now, their second and third eldest manage things and take up the yoke of responsibility. Their eldest daughter, Violetta-Rosa, is one of the most dependable workers anyone could ask for and mans the hostess stand as well as seats guests when needed. Her twin, "Hemlock" also works the tables, though she is known for a less warm and more honest approach with customers, and seems to take relish in kicking out troublemakers (she's been known to play pranks as well, but only on friends or family and in a way that does no harm to the restaurant). The younger daughter, Clementine, also tries to assist, though due to her age (12) she isn't given much responsibility. Instead, she may help with food preparation the night before, or she watches her youngest brother, Caspian (4), either at the restaurant or at home, the next-door building to the restaurant, where her family live when not manning Riverside.

Note
Hello tumblr user dballzposting, i've had a terribly latin american goten and trunks idea while thinking about making myself some maté (weirdass boiling tea-esque argentinian-paraguayan-uruguayan concoction served in a little rotund cup-esque thing that is drank with a metal straw-like thing that isn't really a straw but works like one but better so you dont swallow the leaves and herbs in the little rotund son of a bitch, anyway big part of it is that it's bitter and you drink it while its HOT as balls) and i'm hoping you do not mind the completely cultural dissonance of this ask, i will try to make this make sense
but thinking about mate and how i personally think the Son family is very rural and whatnot and it's canon to some extent but i like to give it some third worlder campo flavor- anyway, i don't think Goten likes maté, but i think Trunks loves it, and Goten kinda resents him for that (its not that serious but trunks can get a little annoying)
because maybe one day trunks comes over to their house and chichi and gohan are there having some maté and like facturas(pastries, see "facturas argentinas" for a clearer picture) and toast with dulce de leche(it solos nutella, change my mind) and trunks never tried maté because bulma doesn't really drink it even if she likes it cause she has a shitty rich ppl coffee machine so trunks drinks that, and vegeta too.. maybe. So trunks has never really tried maté and gohan offers him some because he's nice and goten looks at him expecting him to either burn his tongue or not like it because it's so bitter (he's projecting.) but trunks actually really likes it and he asks gohan how to make it and goten is flabbergasted
days later trunks starts drinking it while he's doing his machine tinkering thing or maybe doing homework (cause the maté thing is like a young teen issue) and he becomes really good at it and at some point he's outside maybe just laying in the grass in some capsule corp garden and drinking maté and vegeta finds him and he usually wouldn't give a shit but he asks to try whatever the fuck has the boy addicted and he likes it too because trunks drinks it bitter and boiling and i think vegeta would too, so it kinda becomes a father-son bonding activity to wake up everyday and have vegeta yell "BOY. MAKE ME SOME MATÉ" or the objectively funnier spanish version: "NENE, CEBAME UN MATE." ("nene" is way closer to meaning "kid" or "child" than it is to "boy" tbh and that just makes it better) and trunks is like "sure" and he makes some and they drink some in silence together (because you don't use individual "cups" for it, you both have to drink it from the same one and refill it from a thermos. maté drinking is a social activity.) and then vegeta flies off to train and trunks goes to school and maybe bulma is there sometimes because she misses drinking maté (and maybe trunks forgets that yamcha fucked his dad, maybe.)
and now when goten comes over to his house trunks offers him maté as a joke to bother him because he knows he doesn't like it (he doesn't like it the way trunks drinks it, or his family drinks it, there's a different version of maté that instead of boiling water has some sort of fruit juice and ice called tereré and i think goten would love that) and goten is done with him and he tells him "SABES QUE NO ME GUSTA EL MATE SOS UN FORRO TRUNKS NO VENGO MAS A TU CASA DE MIERDA" ("YOU KNOW I DONT LIKE MATÉ YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE TRUNKS I'M NEVER COMING OVER TO YOUR SHITTY HOUSE AGAIN" but its funnier knowing the insult "forro" is also another word for condom) and he says so as he's turning on the playstation and sitting down on the couch so he has no intention of leaving but he wants trunks to know that he's being a bitch about his newfound love of maté and that he's deleting fortnite off his ps5 if he keeps this on
also i think videl and gohan would have those shitty picnics some argentinian families have all the time in like those big ass parks and they drink maté and eat these very specific argentinian cookies and i came up with this bit of the delusion solely on the basis of "yeah this would be great enrichment for pan because when i was tiny like her they took me to those shitty picnics all the time and i turned out ok." and also they could invite goten and trunks so they can pick up a football or something and trunks is like sitting with them on the dumbass picnic banquet like "can i make the maté :)?" and he's so happy about it like in his relaxed cool guy wannabe way but he's also like genuinely happy about it and gohan can tell and he's like "sure :)" and trunks does that and every time they are passing around the maté trunks passes it over to goten who looks like he wants to explode him with his mind
and trunks could make some tereré for goten i guess but it's not like he made it FOR HIM specifically while THINKING ABOUT HIM or thinking about what GOTEN would ENJOY or whatever, yknow?
yours truly, yu7i, i'm sorry
I...
I want to play Miitopia with you. So bad
Hey this post is long I hope y’all don’t mind me sticking a readmore on this sonofabitch. Whatever my response is gonna be doesnt matter much .. It’s done and said right there innit.
- I didn’t know that the character limit on asks was so ... liberal.
- Thank you for the description of maté.. My only exposure beforehand has been the yerbe maté on Tomodachi Life (3DS game).
- I dont know what to fucking say. This is so important. First paragraph alone is both engrossing and lethal.
- I like the things you say and the way in which you say them.
- You cant just put this in someone’s inbox and expect them to be okay.
- You can make your own textposts and @ me in them and then other people can access your genius without having to trudge through my response .. for your consideration. You don’t have to. Whatever you’re comfortable with
- This is so real ... so in-character and believable.
- We can cross this with the dballzposting cinematic universe and point out that Vegeta had boobs (for fashion purposes) for around 2 years and he got rid of them when Trunks was around 14 I think. That is to say, it wasn’t too long ago compared to this. And during that time Trunks and Vegeta didn’t really talk much or hang out much because Trunks was perturbed by the boob thing because no one ever bothered to explain it to him. So his relationship with his father took a hit. And now it’s being healed by maté time! :D
- Trunks lying outside enjoying the sun enjoying maté time and his father just quietly manifests. Arms crossed. Standing out of Trunks’s peripheral. Catching the breeze in his hair. (ok this is baby’s first spanish so be gentle. Here I go.) “Qué tomás.” (I put an accent over the ‘a’ becasue I’m under the impression that you do that when conjugating in the vos form. I learned of this form only an hour ago so please correct me if I’m wrong / if it’s of minor importance...)
- I’ve been trying to answer this ask on and off for three hours now. ((editor’s note: as mentioned at the end of this post I am hitting post in the morning so that people will see it. But this post stole sleep from me last night))
-  "NENE, CEBAME UN MATE." Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you
- THE IMAGE OF THEM DRINKING IT IN SILENCE..... I had the thought though that if Vegeta doesn’t know what it is or the custom about it then he could have very well expected his own cup. And when Trunks was like “No we gotta drink it together it’s how you do it” he could’ve assumed that Trunks was just fucking with him. And then I had the thought of Vegeta still insisting on his own cup and then the two of them sitting AT THE SAME TABLE but drinking maté in SEPARATE CUPS and I need you to please tell me if that would be so disturbing and jarring to see and definitely symbolic of a deeply disconnected relationship OR if it would be SOO PETTY and THE FUNNIEST VISUAL GAG EVER or if it would be yknow just not a big deal given the context. Or even maybe just a little funny. Let me know.
- Yeah maybe Trunks forgets about the boobs and about how Yamucha fucked his dad .. Maybe things go back to normal ...
- Bulma would definitely like maté. She drinks so much coffee on the original dragon ball. She loves bitter shit
- This was such an important section:  “’SABES QUE NO ME GUSTA EL MATE SOS UN FORRO TRUNKS NO VENGO MAS A TU CASA DE MIERDA’ (’YOU KNOW I DONT LIKE MATÉ YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE TRUNKS I'M NEVER COMING OVER TO YOUR SHITTY HOUSE AGAIN’ but its funnier knowing the insult ‘forro’ is also another word for condom) and he says so as he's turning on the playstation and sitting down on the couch so he has no intention of leaving but he wants trunks to know that he's being a bitch about his newfound love of maté and that he's deleting fortnite off his ps5 if he keeps this on”
I KNOW they have a ps5. And I didn’t recognize the verb “sos” so I spent like an hour (my computer is slow) googling it and reading what I could find and now I know about it & that’s why I put that accent on that “a” earlier and if that’s stupid you can tell me but if it’s good and fine and accurate then that’s thrilling too.
Why did you send this in today. I did not have the time for this today. It’s now been like 3 and a half hours. I didnt HAVE THIS TIME TONIGHT..!
- The way you went on about the picnics is so funny to me becasue you exclusively described them with pejorative adjectives like it’s just something you KNOW ABOUT and SEE but it’s not something that you DO but also you used to but it’s WHATEVER it’s just a THING that people DO in these huge ass parks like who CARES ugh. Adds character and makes the post shine. Really solidifies the tone
-  “and he's so happy about it like in his relaxed cool guy wannabe way but he's also like genuinely happy” SO HIM UGH. So him. I’ve seen it. On screen
- I CAN SEE GOTEN WANTING HIM TO EXPLODE HIM WITH HIS MIND ... IN MY OWN MIND... Hold on.
Tumblr media
ok i tried.
- “and trunks could make some tereré for goten i guess but it's not like he made it FOR HIM specifically while THINKING ABOUT HIM or thinking about what GOTEN would ENJOY or whatever, yknow? “ <- I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not. Maybe, like all great literature, it is up for interpretation. I think that he would make it and then not ever pass the mug to Goten and when Goten sheepishly tries to grab it, Trunks moves it away and is like “But you didn’t want any earlier! You didnt WANT social drink time!!” and Goten is like “That was A DIFFERENT DRINK..” and Trunks is like “Well how do you know!” and Goten is like “I watched you make it” and Trunks insists “You don’t know!”  and drinks it in front of him. You know
- Goten didn’t HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST maté before, he did not like it but he wasnt BITTER about it or anything he wasnt that BIASED. He was just like “yeah no thanks I think that that shit is foul” yknow? Like he thought it was YUCKY and he couldn’t believe when people took to it so readily but it wasnt a big part of his personality or anything. But Trunks made it a thing. And now it’s a thing
- Not my estadounidense ass typing alt+0233 on my keyboard every time to get that “é”
It is my bed time. I shall hit post on this tomorrow morning so that people have a chance to see it. Thanks for the shot of dopamine. I consider your asks to be a dense pill of vitamins. IDK maybe you do make a bunch of textposts and I just don’t know it. Feel free to @ me any time. My followers and more would love you I think

Re todays' full supermoon. (Per Moongiant.)
September Harvest Full Moon
September’s full moon is known as the Full Harvest Moon, as it is the full moon that is closest to the fall equinox. In the northern hemisphere, the Full Harvest Moon rises very soon after sunset, providing plenty of bright light for farmers harvesting their summer crops. September’s full moon is so well-known for its luminosity and brilliance that certain Native American tribes even named it the Big Moon. The Full Harvest Moon holds major cultural significance in many different communities, who spend this full moon not just celebrating the fall harvest, but also the moon itself.
The most widely known tradition associated with the Full Harvest Moon is the Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated by Chinese communities all around the world. It is also known as the Mooncake Festival. On the full moon night of the eighth lunar month, people gather with friends and family to admire the brilliant full moon while eating mooncakes and drinking tea. Mooncakes are a rich pastry traditionally filled with sweet bean paste or lotus seed paste, and sometimes even include salted egg yolks. The sweet osmanthus flower also blooms during this time, and is often used in teas and the reunion wine drunk when visiting with family. It is a common tradition to celebrate by carrying brightly colored lanterns, so you can often enjoy the beautiful sight of lanterns hanging in front of buildings or in parks, or sky lanterns floating towards the full moon.
There are many other variations on the Mid-Autumn Festival throughout Asia, including Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. The Japanese celebrate this full moon with the Tsukimi tradition (which literally means moon-viewing in Japanese), where people prepare offerings to the moon and eat round tsukimi dango, or rice dumplings. In Korea, this full moon is celebrated as Chuseok, which is one of Korea’s most major holidays, similar to Thanksgiving. People travel back to their hometowns for reunions with their family and tend to their ancestors’ graves. Traditional activities include exchanging gifts, playing folk games, drinking rice wine, and eating songpyeon, which is a rice cake shaped like a half-moon.
For most of the cultures that celebrate variants of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the desserts eaten during this festival are made using fruits, nuts, and grains harvested during this season. Similarly, the Full Harvest Moon is called the Nut Moon by the Cherokee tribes, who gather all sorts of nuts to make nut bread, which is eaten during harvest festivals such as the Ripe Corn Festival. During this moon, Native American tribes pay respects to Mother Earth for her generosity in providing food for her children, including corn and other staple foods.
Chinese communities, on the other hand, spend the Mid-Autumn Festival worshipping the Moon Goddess, Chang’e. According to legends about Chang’e, there used to be ten suns in the sky, which caused drought and suffering throughout the land. Houyi, a talented archer, shot down nine of the suns to save the world, and was rewarded with the position of emperor. Unfortuantely, he later became a malevolent tyrant, obsessed with the search for an immortality pill. In order to protect the common folk from being ruled over forever by a cruel emperor, his wife Chang’e stole the elixir of immortality from him during the full moon of the eighth lunar month. Enraged, Houyi chased after Chang’e, who swallowed the elixir to prevent Houyi from taking it. As a result, Chang’e became a deity herself and flew away to the moon, where she lives in a Moon Palace with her companion the Jade Rabbit, who pounds herbs in a pestle to help her create the elixir of immortality. Appropriately, the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program is named after Chang’e.

Lammas🌾
Tumblr media
In the Northern Hemisphere, Lammas is on August 1st. In the Southern Hemisphere, Lammas is on February 2nd.
With Lammas, aka Lughnasad, falling at the end of Summer, and marking the first harvest, the most common themes for the holidays around it are family, crops, enjoying the last of the heat, and staying well for the coming cold. August 1st is not only Lammas, but we also observe it as Mead Day, National Play Outside Day, Sandcastle Day, and National Ice Cream Sandwich Day. August is National Back to School Month, and there are a number of little celebrations that honor family, including Respect for Parents day and American Family Day. It is also National Sister’s Day, with National Brother’s day only a few days later. This is perfect timing because in India, the Hindu religion is going through the Raksha Bandhan festival, which is literally where they celebrate brotherly bonds. Looking outside of just that specific day, you can see how it falls during Air Conditioning Appreciation Week, Simplify Your Life Week, International Tree Climbing Week, National Farmer’s Market Week, National Parks Month, Family Meals Month, and National Wellness Month.
The Summer will be coming to an end, and the crops that were planted in the Spring are ready for a first harvest. Lammas is a fire festival meant to honor the corn and grain that are beginning to be collected. It’s a time to make bread, and store the leftovers for the coming winter. The God, called Lugh in Celtic traditions, now sacrifices himself for the good of the crops, and the survival of his followers through the harsh days ahead. The Goddess, now called the Grain Mother, watches her lover die, but is also pregnant with the new Sun God. This cycle of rebirth is mirrored in the seedlings stored in the ground through winter to come back in Spring. Enjoy the last few days of warmth.
The nice thing about Lammas is that it is simple and uncomplicated. Since it is a harvest festival, you should be using the harvest in your decorating. The most important crop right now is wheat, so it should be just scattered around your whole house. Put the stalks in vases, or tie them together to make a pentagram. Corn is also plentiful at this time, and makes perfect corn dollies for altars. Grains are really important now and it’s perfect for making breads. Of course, we are also harvesting other fruits, veggies, and herbs, and it is more than appropriate to incorporate those elements. In honor of the sun, bring in Sunflowers, and don’t forget to drink lots of beer.
