Kamisama Kiss
Revolutionary Girl Utena (and I'm also begging everyone to please please please watch Utena it's so good but do look up trigger warnings beforehand)
Chihayafuru
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (the ending is a little...strange on this one to put it lightly lmao but I do still really like it)

Wotakoi: Life is Hard as an Otaku
Skip and Loafer
And for Shounen/Seinen:

2, 30 and 40 !!
Answer if you're confortable only of course 💗
2. what would you name your future kids?
That's a tough one. For a boy I've always imagined the name Eli but my husband already has a nephew named Eli so that kind of put a damper on that one. I like Charlie too but I have an uncle named Charlie that completely ignores my father's existence, which really hurts my father, so I don't want to pay him homage in any way shape or form. Maybe Naruto? XD
For a girl my family has a tradition of having MM in the initials somewhere. My mother is MMMS (she has two middle names), my sister is MMH, my niece is MMW, and I'm MMU. So I'd want to continue that tradition. I love Mei, which comes from my study of Mandarin. Mei sounds beautiful, is spelled beautifully, and means beautiful and I just love it. Don't quite have another M name figured out yet but I don't plan on having kids anytime soon so it can wait a minute.
Sorry for the long answer haha
30. favorite tv show(s)
I don't watch a lot of tv really, but I do have some favorites. I adore Futurama and The IT Crowd, I can watch those on repeat for all eternity and never get bored. Every joke still makes me cackle like an old lady. I also really enjoy The Act, that was good, and American Horror Story used to be a favorite but I haven't seen it since Roanoke.
GASP I FORGOT ABOUT BREAKING BAD I LOVED BREAKING BAD THAT’S PROBABLY MY FAVORITE
Now if we're talking anime then Naruto is obviously one of my favorites, I adore Fruits Basket, Skip Beat! is top 5 for sure, and Mob Psycho 100 has a special place in my heart.
40. favorite memory
I'm not really sure. One of my favorites is going to Disney with @therantingfangirl and my husband a few years ago. Another was taking my nephew to put put golf and boba tea, adopting my cat Apollo is absolutely a favorite. I don't know, I just have so many wonderful memories its hard to choose from. I'm very blessed~
Thank you for asking friend~ Answering was fun~
get to know me, pick some numbers.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
Ooh I don't mind at all but also this is a very hard question 🤣 I'll make a caveat that this top 10 is not necessarily in order and is subject to change but I love any opportunity to talk about my faves <3. Think of it as list of characters that I love more than a proper top 10
Yuki Sohma (Fruits Basket) - Gotta start with the guy that's been my icon on here for several years now. I read the Fruits Basket manga when I was in 7th grade and I resonated so hard with Yuki's internal struggles. I've always said our life circumstances are very different but our anxieties and personal difficulties are so similar and I had never encountered a character I related to so hard before so I latched on and have not let go to this day
Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100) - I'm currently rewatching this series and keep thinking about how if it had come out when I was younger I would have probably latched on to Mob just as much as I did Yuki for how relatable he can be lmao. As an adult I watch it and really root for this kid and feel genuinely proud in every moment of growth he experiences.
Yusuke Urameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho) - A character I was younger than the first time I watched the anime and am currently significantly older than and he has become my anime son. I adore this boy in all of his asshole tough guy posturing and his wit and genuine care for his friends and determination and just all of it. I also want to wrap him in a blanket and give him some delicious hot soup.
Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass) - One thing about me is if a character is pretty and cunning and deadly intelligent and morally grey, they are likely going to be a favorite and Lelouch was an early example of this for me. Code Geass is one of my favorite animes I've ever watched and watching Lelouch scheme and generally be him is so damn delightful every time. He's a character I feel like I could write an entire dissertation on, I honestly could with any of these characters, but I am trying to avoid that for the sake of the length of this post lmao
Wei Wuxian (Mdzs/The Untamed) - How did it take me this long to talk about mdzs? Wei Wuxian is absolutely amazing to watch or read about in every single scene. Complicated and brilliant and cocky and so very tragic. He's another one who hits a LOT of points on the "Who is gonna be Sarah's next favorite character" bingo card. I've scarcely cried for a character as much as I've cried for Wei Wuxian, he is so dear to my heart.
Chuuya Nakahara (Bungo Stray Dogs) - What can I say? I love an angry boy. I'll be honest, a lot of my initial love for Chuuya was aesthetics. His hair and outfit alone had me primed to love him from the start but then he came in with that cocky/angry attitude and honestly fucking sick power and that solidified it lmao. And then the more I learned about him beyond the aesthetics and immediate impressions the more I loved him.
Jiang Cheng (Mdzs/The Untamed) - Definitely gotta mention my favorite angry boy of all my angry boys <3. This man has so many flaws and I honestly do get why it's hard for some people to like him but man I love him so much. His temper, to me, is just another side of his passion which also extends into his ambition and love and he rebuilt his clan from nothing and I'm definitely a person who even when it comes to his more "wrong" decisions/actions I think they're more understandable than the people who hate him say. I feel a strong need to defend him a lot of the time
Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece) - Nothing but respect for my pirate king!!!! Luffy is such a fun character. Like truly one of my favorite shonen protags of all time and that mostly comes down to how hard he makes me smile while reading just constantly. Everything he says and everything he does is so wildly entertaining while also being so earnest and honest and simultaneously laid back. The way he loves his crew and puts everything he has into being their captain. I love him so much lol
Wen Kexing (Word of Honor) - Pretty, cunning, morally grey, do I need to say more? His totally shameless attitude in the beginning was so funny all the time and then the deeper we got into his character the more he went from being the most entertaining person on screen to, well still that, but also a character I feel so many emotions for all the time.
Alphonse Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) - Now here's some top tier anime son material. My love for Al has only ever grown with the years and subsequent rewatches of this series. I. Love. This. Boy. He has seen and been through too much and is still so good and loving and steadfast in his goals and values. Literally couldn't find a better boy. 10/10

14, 15, 16, and 26 for the anime asks <3
14) anime that's overrated: oof. i'm about to make a lot of people REALLY mad. my hero academia, attack on titan, deathnote, black clover, tokyo ghoul, dr. stone, re:zero, konosuba, naruto, sword art online, fairytale, and any dragon ball.
15) anime that's underrated: i already answered this, but mob psycho 100. charlotte, tengoku daimakyo, tensura, your lie in april, noragami, wonder egg priority, fruits basket (i think people overlook this one bc i've talked to a few people that thought it was a simple slice of life anime.), assassination classroom (but in a different way than people might think). i think people tend to overlook slice of life's simply because there's no action. it's hard to explain it just right
16) anime you dropped, why?: demon slayer. i loved season one a lot. i got really into it. but i'm not compelled to watch more. like, i'll get to it when i get to it. maybe. and then pretty much every anime i listed as overrated. wasn't compelled to watch more. wasn't as good as the hype suggested. i watched some and then couldn't find any reasons to keep going.
26) first anime you ever watched: fruits basket (2001). it was also my first manga. when the reboot came out and i got to momiji's episode (iykyk) and thought "i can't believe fruits basket is getting me sobbing again in this decade. also, why did i think it was a good idea to watch this at work?"

Fruits Basket is wild because the premise is "Haha! Wow! These Pretty Anime Men turn into Animals when theyre hugged and then when they turn back they're NAKED!!! 😳😳😳 ehe silly anime!" but then you watch it and its like. Every Character on this show is physically, financially, and emotionally controlled by one person with immeasurable wealth and power. the main characters stories revolve around their slow recovery from the trauma of physical/verbal abuse, sexual manipulation, and neglect. there's a love triangle that isnt even about Who Gets The Girl, but rather each individual's growth as a human being, understanding that they are worthy of love and compassion, that there are people in this world who will love them, unconditionally, and that they DESERVE to be loved. love EXISTS and nothing about them makes them unworthy of whole, unbiased love. that realization is a pivotal part of their healing and it's a central theme of the show that comes up for each and every character, whose own journeys follow that same thread of healing past wounds with compassion, love, and friendship.
and then they like. barely ever turn into animals.

Welcome!!! As my oh-so-clever title says, this blog is for my own writing/art, which mostly focuses on the My Hero Academia manga, aka my comfort read during the COVID times. I don’t know anyone IRL who reads it, so I AM HERE!! *** Spoilers abound! I post about all official sources, including Vigilantes/Illegals, School Briefs, the anime, etc. (although the main manga is my true love).
My ask box and messages are currently open. Ask/message away on MHA or any of the series below (I’ll also answer about my own headcanons/ships/etc, but I don’t do ship wars). Also, while I read leaks and do a reaction post immediately after, I do not look at leaked pages or read unofficial translations AFTER I read the official chapter.
Note: I’m multi-ship friendly and an LGBTQ+ ally, but as an older fan with my own teen kids, I personally don’t speculate or post about the sexuality of teens, or about teens in sexual relationships. I’m not judging if others do, but I won’t make it creepy on my end. When it comes to teen romantic relationships, I stick to mild speculation based on what is expressly, overtly shown in canon.
Favorite hero characters: The origin trio, of course, but my heart lies with All Might, Aizawa, Present Mic, and Fat Gum. (What can I say, I’m old and I like the grownups.) Shoutout to Iida, Amajiki, and Monoma. Kaminari, Kirishima, and Ashido have great energy. I want to love Ochako too, but I don’t love how the “crush” storyline consumed her.
Favorite villain characters: Twice, Shigaraki, Stain, Spinner, and Dabi….and I’m REALLY enjoying the post-PLF war AFO development too. Shoutout to Compress and Toga. I loved seeing the LOV stomp Overhaul and Re-destro (though I’ve come to really love the quirk Overhaul).
Favorite side characters: Fuyumi, Ms. Joke, Officer Sansa, Makoto, Burnin
Influences/stuff I like other than BnHA:
I LOVE Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Dragon Prince, Castlevania, Arcane, Lore Olympus, Gravity Falls, Owl House, MLP:FiM, Umbrella Academy, The Boys, and pretty much every Spider-Man incarnation imaginable. Plus the 90s X-Men cartoon and the new X-Men ‘97!!
Loved anime for Vinland Saga, Mob Psycho 100, Spy x Family, Zom 100, Pluto, and Dungeon Meshi. Kaiju No.8 is cute so far too! Finished Attack on Titan & Demon Slayer.
The MCU, Star Wars, and Batman (especially The Animated Series) are big influences. Also Doctor Who!
I’ve read/watched some D.Gray Man, Golden Kamuy, HxH, Fruits Basket, Soul Eater, Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, Fire Force, One Punch Man, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, and Tiger & Bunny.
I don’t read as much Naruto or One Piece as I “should.” I kinda skipped that generation? Oh, but Akira and Unico are amazing. I dig Astro Boy and Black Jack too.

Thank you so much for tagging me @yourmomwatchesanime! 😃 This was a lovely surprise to wake up to this morning and your answers were all so relatable haha
Favorite anime: Haikyuu!! I love it! (Although Mob Psycho 100 holds a special place in my heart!)
Least favorite anime: I wouldn't say I exactly have a least favorite as if it doesn't interest me I just don't watch it, but when I was first getting into anime when I was around 16/17 it was because my friend was showing me a bunch of series that were popular then. We watched season 1 of Attack on Titan, we watched a few anime movies, we watched Fruits Basket, but I remember she made me watch two shows I really didn't like at all: Hetalia (we watched the movie and I thought the concept of countries as people was really interesting but the actual execution was kind of... Offensive and just surface-level stereotypical humor when it could have been so much more interesting), and another one which I've literally never seen since but there was this robot girl? I can't remember anything else or what it was called but it was very strange
Last anime you watched: I just finished Run With The Wind! (And I'm still super emotional about it :'( )
Favorite anime movie: Ohhhh it's so hard to pick! I don't think I can say just one! For a few years The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was my favorite; then I watched Perfect Blue and I'm a big thriller/horror fan so I loved that! But then I also love Your Name and 5 Centimetres Per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days and just about every Ghibli film! (I recently watched the English dub of The Cat Returns with my brother and we were crying laughing when we realized the king of the cats was Tim Curry, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a film!) If I had to pick one I guess I'd go with Howl's Moving Castle but I would feel like I'm betraying so many other great movies!
Anime you cried hardest at: Okay, so I've watched a ton of sad anime like Your Lie in April and Anohana and A Silent Voice buuuut they never made me cry, and I think it's because I knew they were going to be sad going in (either because they'd been advertised that way or because someone recommended them to me and told me they'd cried watching them). Having said that, I bawled at Your Name because going in I knew nothing about it other than the basic premise of body-swapping and expected a full on, light-hearted romantic comedy throughout, and even though it wasn't that sad I was not anticipating the emotional punches at all!!! In terms of non-movies, one that made me well up a little recently was A Place Further Than The Universe, again because I went into it only knowing it was about a group of girls who want to go to Antarctica and did not expect some of the more emotional scenes! (Side note: Ever since I watched it, I've been getting loads of adverts for trips to Antarctica come up on my phone and laptop, so if anyone wants to get a ragtag team together and go off to the South Pole hmu)
Your comfort anime: Asides from Haikyuu it's probably Naruto (the original series, not shippuden) or Ouran High School Host Club, they were two of the first anime I watched by myself and they both feel very nostalgic for me, occasionally I go back and watch a few episodes just for fun!
Favorite anime character: dhjdjsbdhe this is too hard! Pretty much every Haikyuu character? If I had to say one it would be Bokuto! I feel like Akaashi is the character I relate to the most, and I would love a best friend who is as exuberant and fun as Bokuto! His enthusiasm is excellent and I'm trying hard to be more like that! I also love Rock Lee from Naruto, again pretty much every character from Mob Psycho 100, oh and also I liked a lot of the characters in Baccano and Durarara, I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned those animes yet but those are other favorites of mine! Also Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club and the main trio from Samurai Champloo! I’m sure there are loads of others I’ve forgotten but yeah!
Shojo or shonen: Shonen by far (nothing against shojo, I do like some, it's just that like 90% of the shows I like are shonen)!
If you could shift into an anime universe, which one: I mean, I don't want to die so that rules out a significant portion! Probably a Ghibli universe so my food can look like that 😊🍲 or maybe Run With The Wind, I'd love to go back to university (I mean, I technically am at university but everything is still closed... Would love to go back and join as many societies as I could, although I'm not sure about a running club)!

Thanks to @forthegenuine and @empress-of-snark for the tags. Sorry it took me forever to do this!
Rules: Answer 20 questions then tag 20 bloggers you want to get to know better.
1. Name? Chandler
2. Nickname? Channy most often, sometimes Channy Faith (which my grandparents started), Chan, and ChanChan (rarely)
3. Zodiac Sign? Capricorn
4. Height? 5′1
5. Languages Spoken? English, the tiniest bit of French that I retained from high school, and even a tinier bit of Japanese that I’ve gotten through all my years of watching anime.
6. Nationality? American
7. Favorite Season? Autumn/Fall. I love the crisp weather, the pumpkins, and the fact Halloween and yummy thanksgiving food are just around the corner.
8. Favorite Flower? Honestly I love pretty much any type of wildflower, also peonies and sunflowers, and buttercups! I think buttercups are probably considered to be more plant than flower, but I just get happy any time I see them. And I mean, they’re called buttercups for goodness sake!
9. Favorite Scent: Anything that smells warm and cozy, like vanilla or caramel or freshly brewed coffee. I tend to like fruity scents too, as long as they aren’t perfume-y.
10. Favorite Color? Green Blues and Blue Greens. Also anything that’s like a burnt orange that reminds me of fall.
11. Favorite Animals? Too many to name. If an animal is cute, then it’s babey in my eyes.
12. Favorite Fictional Characters? Evie and Sebastian (Devil in Winter), Sherlock Holmes, Molly Hooper (Sherlock),  Mary Morstan (Sherlock), Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100), Reigen Arataka (Mob Psycho 100), pretty much everyone from Fruits Basket, and so many more, seriously.
13. Coffee, Tea, or Hot Chocolate? Coffee, usually with just a bit of sweetened creamer, but I can drink it black sometimes too. I don’t drink hot tea often, and in true southern fashion I most often drink it iced and somewhat sweet.
14. Average Amount of Sleep? 6 or 7 hours during the work week. I might get more, but I wake up at least once during the middle of the night to pee like I’m an old person or something. I also tend to wake up 30 minutes before my alarm even goes off. The weekend I probably end up with less since I tend to stay up later.
15. Cats or Dogs? I love both in their own, unique ways. There’s no competition in my eyes.
16. Number of Blankets you Sleep with? Typically this big fluffy blanket I’ve had or years, as well as my old, thin-ish comforter.
17. Dream Trip? Too may places to name. I have so much wanderlust. I suppose if I had to narrow it down, a major bucket list trip for me would be to do a UK tour.
18. Blog Established? According to my archives, I’ve been here since June 2011.
19. Followers? Somehow I have amassed 3,582 after being on this site for nearly ten slutty, slutty years. To be fair there are probably plenty of porn bots in that number that I’m sure I’ve somehow missed.
20. A Random Fact? The summer before I went into 6th grade, my mother convinced me to get my ears pierced, so off we went to Claire’s in our local mall. Being a big bundle of anxiety such as I am, even at 11, I was terrified the entire time. To be honest, the actual piercing of my ears didn’t even hurt, but I suppose I had worked myself up so much that as soon as I got up from the chair, my blood pressure just sort of plummeted and I fainted right there in Claire’s in front of the poor 16 year old who had just finished piercing me. Luckily my mom worked at a blood bank at the time, so she was used to people fainting and knew exactly what to do for me, but I do often wonder back to that Claire’s employee.... Wonder if she ever thinks about the little girl that fainted in the middle of the store.
Now I tag:@fairy-feather, @luminescentglow, @luke-skyjokers, @riley1cannon, @wiseoneinhel, @cermetwillnotgrow33, @mae-jones, @elennemigo, and anyone else who would like to participate!

for the anime ask thing: 1-5, 12, 23, and 30 (feel free to skip any ofc sorry it's a lot I'm tired so I'm greedy) thank you so much my anime queen!!! goodnight
jgbfbfg thank you sm!!
1. first anime you ever watchedi have a really vague memory of drangonball and i don’t remember liking it very much :’D
2. first anime crushkai from beyblade… i had a type…
3. favorite anime characterbruuhhh… i honestly can’t choose
4. least favorite anime charactercan i answer this as ‘most hated’? bc i feel like that has different connotations.. so my most hated anime character is a tie between d*no g*ldzine and ash’s dad jim callenreese because no other characters has ever made me literally gag/punch a screen.. thanks to them i now understand what ppl mean when they say s0mething made their blood boil. (and yes of course they’re both from banana fish)
5. list all anime you have ever watchedwatched as in finished all of it or as in seen more than 3 episodes and vaguely remembers the plot?because if it’s the former then: yuri on ice, haikyuu, free!, kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteru, tsurune, ouran highschool host club, death note, mob psycho 100, orange, showa genroku rakugo shinju, banana fish, hetalia, school rumble, sarazanmai (if we’re counting movies too then wolf children, tokyo godfathers, kimi no na wa, kotonoha no niwa, koe no katachi, spirited away, totoro)if it’s the latter then: naruto, dororo, fruits basket, bleach, fairy tail, tokyo mew mew, noragami, fma, dive (i think that’s what it’s called?) oremono, maid-sama, one punch man, attack on titan, boku no hero academia, no.6, mushishi, bakuman,… i’m probably forgetting some but who cares12. anime that should get more attention from others  y’know what, once upon a time i thought banana fish should get more attention, but then i realized that i’m not a sadist. like, it’s good, but it really did a fcking number on me… only people who wanna get destroyed should watch/read it. mob psycho got a lot of attention, but i think it deserves even more :D ALSO CAROLE AND TUESDAY! THIS IS A CALLOUT FOR MYSELF!!! from what i’ve seen of it, it looks like a masterpiece
23. unpopular character you love sakura is considered unpopular in some circles and i love her to death so :D
30. one anime conclusion you would change banana fish would be too obvious of an answer so  remember showa genroku rakugo shinju from the list above? the main character adopts the daughter of his ex and his best friend after they die. at the end it’s revealed the father of her kid is that dude (said main character) :-)))) it was a good show and that detail just ruined it for me

12 / 23 / 27 / 29 !!
Chelle I can always count on u to play these games ur like. so quality
12. anime that should get more attention from others OK so I could be predictable and say Princess Tutu, but I’m gonna spice things up and go with Tokyo Mew Mew. Yeah the plot is relatively basic and predictable but listen. ITS A FUN TIME. Its such an underrated and forgetten magical girl anime, mostly because the dub is TERRIBLE and its overshadowed by Sailor Moon, but its so early 2000s you can’t help but love it. Feed your inner 13 year old, watch this show, make all the shitty OCs, and casually pretend you dont ship Ichigo with the crop top alien. Its a fun time.
23. unpopular character you love Ummmm. Idk if hes unpopular per say but Im gonna say Bakugo. Like I feel like everyone is united under the banner of realizing hes a shithead but loving that shitty explosion boy anyway?? It would be easier for me to give you a list of popular characters I hate lol. Also I could have answered Sakura for this but honestly I have approximately 0 fucks to give to anyone who doesnt love my girl so I dont interact with those kind of people :)))
27. anime you plan to watch in the future Mob Psycho 100 and Magi are the main ones on my list. Im a huge fan of anything with magic and adventure so PLS HMU WITH SUGGESTIONS.
29. anime that deserves another season Im still waiting for Berserk. Also, dont even get me started on how the Fruits Basket anime could EASILY be rebooted but wont be
Anime Asks Because Why Not

To whittle down the seemingly countless collection of animation that the 12 months already has to supply, we’ve put collectively a listing of the very best anime exhibits of the previous couple of months.
Also check: Best Anime to Watch – Top 30 Anime of 2018
The very best upcoming 2019 anime embrace reboots of classics like Fruits Basket and Boogiepop Phantom, new seasons of fantastic exhibits like Mob Psycho 100 and Chihayafuru, and all-new variations of sizzling manga like Osamu Tezuka’s 60’s traditional Dororo, in addition to the newer sequence, The Promised Neverland. It doesn’t matter what you are in search of, there’s one thing to get hyped about on this 12 months. So, with out losing any extra time let’s begin the present!
15. Aggretsuko (Season 2)
Rarecho and Fanworks’ Aggretsuko was a breakout hit when it premiered on Netflix early final 12 months. A lot in order that we’re now handled to yet one more new season, this time crammed with much more pleasant surprises and twists than the primary.
After we final left Retsuko, our plucky steel karaoking crimson panda protagonist, it appeared as if she was in a reasonably great spot between her work-life and precise life. Certain, her job as an accounting clerk nonetheless sucks and her love life — or lack thereof — might depart one thing to be desired, however Retsuko got here out of the challenges of that first season a stronger, wiser, and extra assured younger girl keen to say her price, converse up for herself, and extra keen to behave on her personal wants and wishes.
Season 2 finds Retsuko tackling new, albeit acquainted challenges within the type of Anai, an aggressively hypersensitive intern below her tutelage, the intrusive helicopter parenting of her personal mom who insists on her discovering a accomplice and settling down, and a brand new love curiosity with a stunning background. An immensely satisfying continuation of the primary, Aggretsuko Season 2 is one in every of 2019’s must-watch sequence.
Launch date: June 14 Director: Rarecho Animation manufacturing: Fanworks Watch Online on: Netflix
14. Rilakkuma and Kaoru
Rilakkuma and Kaoru follows Kaoru, the present’s titular 20-something workplace employee, as she navigates the challenges of her job, residence life, the expectations of her household and friends, in addition to the imprecise however palpable expertise of melancholy and ennui that accompanies younger maturity, all whereas caring for Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, and Kiiroitori, two anthropomorphic bears that starting dwelling with Kaoru and her pet fowl, respectively.
The present is notable for being one of the vital current and distinguished examples of stop-motion animation in anime, a method too typically marginalized to a distinct segment inside the anime trade, however no much less expressive and spectacular. A captivating slice-of-life comedy with coming-of-age components, each the sequence’ writing and animation are glorious. It is hardly stunning provided that the previous is credited to Naoko Ogigami, an award-winning Japanese comedy writer-director, and the latter to key animators comparable to Katsushi Bouda and Shigeru Okada, lauded stop-motion artists.
At its coronary heart, Rilakkuma and Kaoru is very similar to Netflix’s 2018 sequence Aggretsuko: taking the beloved mascot of a industrial model and centering them on the coronary heart of a honest and affecting exploration of the inherent loneliness of younger maturity and the worth of real, persistent friendships. For this alone, Rilakkuma and Kaoru shines as top-of-the-line anime of 2019.
Launch date: April 6 Director: Nobuyuki Takeuchi, Kunihiko Ikuhara Animation manufacturing: MAPPA, Lapin Monitor Watch Online on: Netflix
13. Sarazanmai
Let’s minimize straight to the purpose: Sarazanmai is one in every of, if not essentially the most weird, idiosyncratic, visually audacious, and thematically evocative anime to air in 2019. Describing simply precisely what the hell Saranzanmai is to somebody who has by no means seen an anime directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara (Revolutionary Lady Utena, Pengiundrum, Yurikuma Arashi) is about as tough as it will be to explain the idea of ‘water’ and what the hell it means for one thing to be ‘moist’ to an alien.
However, put merely, the present follows three middle-schoolers — Kazuki Yasaka, Kuji Toi, and Enta Jinnai — as they’re remodeled into kappa, amphibious beak-faced demons, after releasing Keppi, the guardian spirit of Asakusa, from the statue containing him and by chance insulting him. To return to human type, the three are tasked with exorcising “kappa-zombies,” malicious poltergeists, by performing elaborate dance numbers in a liminal dimension to steal the zombies’ shirikodama, magical spheres representing human want, by forcibly eradicating them from their anuses. That’s the tamest, most perfunctory description of what Sarazanmai is about, and it solely will get stranger from right here on out.
Ikuhara is understood for writing exhibits with socially-conscious premises powered by avant-garde visuals laden with labyrinthine ranges of subtextual depth, and Sarazanmai isn’t any completely different. Even realizing that, nothing can fairly put together you for the surprises this present has to supply. If nothing else, know this: It is likely one of the most daring, earnest, and empathetic sequence to air this 12 months, and save for having watched one in every of Ikuhara’s works up to now, you received’t see anything fairly prefer it.
Launch date: April 6 Director: Nobuyuki Takeuchi, Kunihiko Ikuhara Animation manufacturing: MAPPA, Lapin Monitor Watch Online on: Crunchyroll
12. Fruits Basket
Natsuki Takaya’s Fruits Basket is a perennial favourite amongst followers of shojo (i.e. ‘younger girl’) manga for its charming slice-of-life storyline, empathetically rendered characters, engrossing relational dynamics, and earnest, offbeat humor, and the sequence’ early ’00s tv adaptation much more so.
This 12 months’s reboot, produced by TMS Leisure and directed by Yoshihide Ibata (Kill La Kill, FLCL Progressive), is a meticulous and loving tackle the supply materials that champions its dedication to telling the unique manga’s story in full. Fruits Basket follows the story of Tohru Honda, a hardworking and optimistic excessive schooler who’s taken in by the Soma clan, a reclusive household whose members every carry the reincarnated spirit of an animal from the Chinese language Zodiac.
Whereas balancing the calls for of faculty and her new function as a surrogate member of the Soma clan, Tohru grows as a younger girl whereas inadvertently facilitating the expansion of every of the family members, tightening bonds that vacillate between the familial and romantic. 2019’s Fruits Basket is a disarmingly endearing romantic comedy with simply sufficient twists on the method of the style to drag in newcomers whereas satisfying longtime followers of the unique.
Launch date: April 6 Director: Yoshihide Ibata Animation manufacturing: TMS/8PAN Watch Online on: Crunchyroll, FunimationNow
11. My Roommate Is a Cat
My Roommate Is a Cat is the anime model of Rooster Soup for the Soul if there ever was one. The gist of the plot is baked into the present’s title, however this slice-of-life goes above and past in delivering heartfelt, entertaining life classes that concentrate on “the feels” with predatory accuracy – particularly for those who’re a fan of cats.
Subaru, a 23-year-old author with agoraphobic tendencies, occurs upon a stray cat whereas visiting his dad and mom’ graves. He brings her residence, drawing inspiration from her for way over only a novel. Typical hijinks ensue, however My Roommate Is a Cat seeks to elicit extra than simply the occasional snicker or smile. The present cleverly switches between the views of man and cat, shedding mild on how they interpret the world, and heartfully shows how particular person actions can so strongly have an effect on others.
Collectively, they develop and be taught, turning into extra empathetic towards one another and the individuals of their lives. Don’t be stunned if you end up laughing, crying, and soul-searching throughout a single episode.

As a sequence, Boogiepop and Others could possibly be finest described as a slow-burn supernatural thriller thriller dotted with adrenaline-spiking sequences of horror, motion, and suspense set towards a backdrop of gorgeous metropolitan vistas. As an adaptation of not solely the primary novel in Kadono’s sequence, however a number of of the sequence’ different celebrated entries comparable toBoogiepop at Daybreak, Boogiepop Returns: VS Imaginator, and Boogiepop Overdrive: The King of Distortion, the sequence is a must-watch for longtime followers of the Boogiepop and a super level of entry for anybody new to and curious concerning the franchise.

Ufotable is maybe finest recognized for his or her work on the Destiny franchise, a byzantine darkish fantasy sequence famend for its dazzling battle sequences and digital animation; happily, these qualities carry over to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Whereas the present won’t be as thematically-nuanced or poignant as, say, Dororo, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a powerful shonen journey sequence in its personal proper and is bound to attraction to any fan of Naruto or Black Clover and stands as one of the vital well-animated fantasy chanbara sequence to return out this 12 months.

Although not solely other than what one would anticipate from a run-of-the-mill shonen sports activities sequence, MIX shines amongst its contemporaries on the advantage of its charming solid, stunning animation, and creative implementation of fourth-wall breaking transitions and tongue-in-cheek narration. Tou and Sou’s dogged dedication to see their approach to victory is earnest and provoking in a means not not like that of a season of Pokémon — not stunning, given the truth that MIX’s primary author, Atsuhiro Tomioka, is understood for his previous and ongoing contributions to a number of seasons, movies, and specials of the Pokémon sequence.

Ever because the first season of One-Punch Man premiered and blew everybody’s face off in 2015, followers have been eagerly anticipating the following, and after a 4 years wait, it is lastly right here. Followers and critics of the primary season have been curious as to how the change between manufacturing studios and workers from Madhouse, who selected as a substitute to supply this 12 months’s Boogiepop and Others, and J.C. Workers would have an effect on the general high quality of the present’s animation. To make sure, the absence of director Shingo Natsume and the deft skills of animators as Sejoon Kim and the legendary Yutaka Nakamura are definitely missed right here, however contemplating the season’s tortured manufacturing and limitations, J.C. Workers nonetheless handle to ship a serviceable follow-up that strives for the over-the-top bombast and comedy of the primary season and misses by only a hair. To this point, so boring. However there’s a twist: As a result of an ill-fated mixture of entrenched class consciousness, emotional immaturity, and poisonous adolescent satisfaction, neither Shirogane or Shinomiya will acknowledge their emotions for the opposite.
Fairly than healthily course of these feelings and discuss issues out like, y’know, adults, Shirogane and Shinomiya as a substitute elect to orchestrate an elaborate sequence of public conditions to drive the opposite to admit their emotions first in a bid to save lots of face. SUPERVERSIVE: The Best Anime of the Year Mega Post
Giorno Giovanna, a holdover from Winter 2018
Outside of the horrendous and tragic Kyoto Animation fire, this was an amazing year for anime. The fire is a terrible loss to the community; there is no softening that blow. But as far as the quality of the shows that came out – WOW!
This is going to be a pretty long post, because there’s so much to get to. Before we start, here’s the structure:
I will be naming one show per season as the “Winner”, and then pick a runner-up.
Only new shows will be counted – if a show from a previous season is continuing or a season 2 is airing, that won’t count.
That said, best continuing show/sequel will be its own category.
An anime of the year will be named as one of the winners at the end.
Without further ado…Let’s begin!
Winter Season Winner: The Promised Neverland
Overview/Review: I remember when the winter season was ongoing it was thought of as a truly incredible season. And…yeah, but not necessarily because of the huge variety of new shows. It’s because between the new shows and continuations of previous shows, there was a ton of FANTASTIC content. We have the incredible season 2 of “Mob Psycho 100” airing as well as the back half of part 5 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, “Golden Wind”, arguably the best one yet. “Dororo” started airing as well; I only saw it later on (and honestly it came off mostly as a bargain bin “Demon Slayer” with worse action choreography, animation, and music – yes, I know it came first), but it was still pretty good.
Without a doubt though, of the new shows, the season came down to two: “The Promised Neverland” and “Kaguya-Sama: Love is War”.
(“Wait, you’re not even going to talk about ‘Shield Hero’?” NO.)
Both shows were very good, but I think everybody knows the clear winner has to be “The Promised Neverland”
Okay, I know I already outed myself as a loyal shonen guy, and yes, this year’s list will have multiple. And yes, “The Promised Neverland” is a shonen. But it’s not a normal shonen. “The Promised Neverland” is a horror story. A really intense horror story about adorable children being raised on a farm and fed to demons.
I just spoiled something for the first episode, but I don’t know how to recommend it to people without talking about the premise. And MAN is that some premise, and some first episode. The show doesn’t shy away from some truly horrific imagery, and the direction and character animations are tremendous.
Most importantly though…the damn thing is scary. Really scary. It isn’t nihilistic, it isn’t gory or gross or full of jump scares, but the way it expertly maintains an atmosphere of slowly creeping dread is masterful. And yet, it is also undoubtedly superversive, an impressive feat.
I can’t talk about much more because spoilers really do matter in a story like this. The villain is great, the leads are likable, and the soundtrack is solidly atmospheric. It’s an excellent show.
That said, to my eyes it is far from perfect. The pacing is totally janked in the middle, with certain plot points being hyperfocused on to an almost laughable degree and others sped by so fast you’re left scratching your head trying to figure out how you got here. And outside the villains, while the characters are solidly likable they don’t particularly stand out. This makes sense in a story like this – too competent and you lose some of the tension as it becomes less likely they’ll lose – but it does nevertheless leave you occasionally waiting for somebody to do something really interesting, and while it DOES happen it can take awhile. It often feels like lots of chess pieces are being pushed around with few captures.
But in the end the show has such a great atmosphere and executes its terrific premise so well it is the easy pick for the anime of the spring season. Highly recommended.
Runner-up: Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is a neat twist on high school rom-coms starring two characters who both obviously like each other but instead of talking it out engage in escalating battles of hyperbolic 3-D chess as each tries to get the other to confess. The show honestly starts off slow but as it starts to peel back the layers surrounding its characters it grows beyond being a collection of memes and becomes a funny and satisfying rom-com in its own right, more like “Toradora” than not. Recommended.
Spring Season Winner: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Review/Overview: The spring season was nowhere near as strong as the winter season, with no real standout sequels to pad out the numbers. But one show stood out, and not only stood out, is in my opinion superior to “The Promised Neverland”, and that show is “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”.
Let’s be honest here: Demon Slayer is about as generic a shonen as you can get. A teenager from the Taisho period of Japan named Tanjiro comes home to find his entire family murdered by demons, save one: his sister Nezuko, but unfortunately she’s no luckier – she’s been transformed into a demon herself. Despite this Tanjiro refuses to believe that her humanity is completely gone, and searches desperately for help. After a chance encounter with a demon slayer proves that her familial loyalty has not been completely lost the slayer spares her life and recommends Tanjiro train to join the Demon Slayer Corps, with the hope that with their training and resources on his side he can somehow find a cure.
The characters are fine – nothing special. The plot is fine – nothing special. So what makes this show so great?
Quite simply, this show has arguably the greatest production values a TV anime has ever had.  Demon Slayer paces itself well, and every action scene is better than the last, culminating in the remarkable Demon Mountain arc and the stunning episode 19 fight between Tanjiro and one of the villainous twelve Kizuki, super-powerful demons working for the most powerful demon of all, Muzan.
So essentially we have a show with solid characters (except Zenitsu, who at times nearly ruins the show, though people have promised me with solemn assurance that he gets better), pacing, and writing and incredible action, animation, sound design, and soundtrack. For a shonen to break its way into the popular consciousness I think it needs to do one thing particularly well; for “My Hero Academia” it’s the characters and for “Demon Slayer” it’s the production values. For that reason I doubt it will age as well, but that doesn’t make what we have any less excellent.
Runner-up: None. I didn’t particularly like the rest of the offerings this season. I suppose I should note “Fruits Basket” is supposed to be good even if it isn’t really my thing.
Summer Season Winner: Dr. Stone
Review/Overview: Summer was a much stronger season than the spring season, though often for a lot of its sequels. We have the fun, if slight, sequel to “Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” which is the sort of light feel good show I think the lame Slime Isekai was supposed to be, and some well-regarded spinoffs I have been assured are good even though I didn’t watch them, such as “A Certain Scientific Accelerator” and “Lord El-Melloi’s Case Files”. We also have mediocre-but-not-terrible disappointments like “Fire Force”, which at least has decent animation sometimes. “Vinland Saga” I haven’t had the opportunity to watch yet; I’ve heard it’s…pretty fine.
But by far, and I mean by far, the best anime of the summer is “Dr. Stone”. Holy crap do I love this show. “Dr. Stone’s” premise is as simple as it is awesome: One day all of humanity turns to stone. Over 3,000 years later Senku Ishigami, a genius high schooler with a passion for science, wakes up along with his dim-witted but physically adept friend Taiju, and together they set about rebuilding civilization and reviving the stone world.
The show starts off with a bang, leaning into the horror of the premise and introducing an unforgettable character in Senku, then steadily improves as it goes along. “Dr. Stone” is not a battle anime, but that doesn’t mean it’s not hype. “Dr. Stone” is an anime about science, yes, but more importantly it’s an anime about how humanity is awesome and how we take for granted all of the wonders of the modern world that people of the past could only dream of.
The hype moments take place in the form of technological and scientific achievements, as Senku slowly reintroduces modern technology to a lovable cast of characters. It also features what is absolutely my scene of the year, even over “Demon Slayer’s” epic episode 19 fight, in the final minutes of episode 9, an utterly awe-inspiring moment that needs to be seen for itself to be fully appreciated.
Imagine you have never seen a light bulb, a record, a generator, antibiotics, or even pasta before. What would it be like to see it for the first time? To watch the modern world come into being? The answer to that question is the true appeal of “Dr. Stone” (not to mention its gorgeous backgrounds and hilarious facial expressions), and I can’t recommend it enough.
Runner-up: Despite some good sequels no new shows really stood out to me, but for what its worth I’ve heard “Vinland Saga” is pretty decent, if a bit divisive. As far as sequels I do recommend “Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?” for a fun time.
Fall Season Winner: No Guns Life
Review/Overview: The Fall season has been insanely good, both in new shows and sequels. Though stuffed with isekai not even all of them are disasters for once.  What I’m just going to call “Pro Wrestler Isekai” and “Cautious Hero Isekai” are okay, if not hilarious, comedies; ultimately I think if Pro Wrestler Isekai – written by the Konosuba author – had the animation quality of “Cautious Hero Isekai”, it would probably be great, but as is one is written very well but has bland animation and one is animated hilariously but feels more like a knock-off “Konosuba” then the anime by the “Konosuba” guy. Still, both can be an okay time.
“Ascendance of a Bookworm” is a very, very slow burn, and I’m getting tired of medieval European-style settings, but the characters are lovely, the ideas behind it are interesting, and it looks great. If you are okay with the snail’s pace there’s a lot to love about it. Even a show like “Assassin’s Pride”, which is generic light novel trash, is really, really well animated and well drawn with an interesting world and terrific visuals. I can’t and won’t recommend it, but we’re in a season where even the bad shows actually have effort put into them.
To say nothing of the sequels, season 4 of “My Hero Academia” and even season 3 of “Chihayafiuru”, which is a surprisingly fun little show about a girl obsessed with the Japanese card game Karuta and the relationships that have been formed around it.
That said, two new shows this season were both absolutely outstanding, “No Guns Life” and “Beastars”, but while I absolutely love “Beastars” and unreservedly recommend it I have to give “No Guns Life” the nod as anime of the season. In a dystopian future Juzo Inui is a private eye working as a “Resolver” where he takes on cases specifically related to “extended”, humans who have augmented their body with cybernetic extensions. In fact, Juzo is an extended himself, a particularly dramatic one, in fact. You see, his head is a gun.
Yeah. His head. Is a gun. Straight up, just a gun.
So this show is awesome, of course. With a premise like that, how could it not be? But it’s even better than that. “No Guns Life” is smart. Juzo’s (outstanding) character design can easily be played campily and over the top, but the show goes a different way and plays everything with total seriousness. As a result Juzo, while absolutely badass, comes off as a distinctly tragic figure. I think the most impressive part of this show is that once I started watching it I never thought to myself “Man does Juzo look silly”. He isn’t a silly character, he’s a sad one, his humanity forcibly taken away so he could be turned into a living weapon.
And yes, he is indeed super cool. Remember, only people Juzo accepts get to touch his trigger, and he doesn’t intend to accept anyone. The other main characters, a teenager rescued by Juzo from the evil Beruhren Corporation, who conducted human experimentation on children, and Mary, Juzo’s mechanic, are both immediately interesting to watch, to say nothing of the colorful cast of minor characters appearing regularly throughout the show. The plot is an engaging conspiracy mystery with plenty of twists and turns, and the studio in charge is the legendary Madhouse so of course the animation is great. It all feels like a 90’s throwback anime in the best possible way – mature storytelling for a slightly older audience with a serious-looking art style and color palette.
I should note that for the first time on this list it is questionable if the show is strictly speaking superversive. “No Guns Life” is a neo-noir, and the essence of noir is that the world of black and white, good and evil, is gone: We’re in a world of gray now. But inside this world of gray are men like Juzo, who hold onto the flame of integrity even though they know it has no value in a world like this – but that doesn’t matter, because sometimes something is still the right thing to do. Good isn’t always rewarded, evil isn’t always punished, but that’s no excuse for breaking your moral code, because in the world of gray it’s even more important than ever before. Is that superversive? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s certainly compelling. Highly recommended.
Runner-up: I can’t emphasize enough that “Beastars”,  dark tale about the lives of herbivores and carnivores living in a society where they are forced to integrate as equals, is very nearly just as good a show as “No Guns Life”. Specifically, “Beastars” takes place in a school and follows the life of Legosi, a polite and mild-mannered wolf who is constantly swallowing down sudden urges of extreme bloodlust. After a murder takes place on campus and Legosi nearly loses control and kills a rabbit, tensions mount and conflicts start to arise not only between the herbivores and the carnivores but even between fellow carnivores with conflicting ideas about how to live their lives.
The show is animated in CGI but somehow it not only works, it has one of the coolest and most distinct visual styles of the year. The music has a jazzy feel vaguely reminiscent of “Cowboy Bebop”. While the OP, “Wild Side”, isn’t necessarily the best one (there are others with more going on visually), it’s terrific musically, has legitimately incredible stop motion animation, and tells a creepy little self-contained story. “Beastars” is an excellent show, and that I prefer “No Guns Life” is arguably only a matter of taste. Highly recommended.
Best continuing show/sequel of the year: Mob Psycho 100 season 2.
Review/Overview: With so many amazing sequels having come out this year, to say nothing of the continuing shows from Fall 2018, I want to say that this was a really difficult choice. We have the terrific second half of part 5 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, “Golden Wind”. We have the front half of season 4 of the always excellent “My Hero Academia” in its best story arc. We have the fun-if-slight shows “Is it Wrong to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?” season 2 and “Chihayafuru” season 3. All of these shows ranged from good to outstanding and could easily win in any other year.
(Note: “My Hero Academia”, if the arc is executed well, would probably win if the FULL season was shown instead of just the first half.)
I want to say this was a really difficult choice, but it wasn’t difficult at all. Season 2 of “Mob Psycho 100” was somehow even better than the incredible season 1 of the show, and cements its status as an instant classic. It’s hilarious, it’s touching, the animation is insanely good, and the message that hard work and self-improvement is the key to making a fulfilling life for yourself is just as profound in the modern anime world landscape as ever. Despite airing all the way back in the winter season, and despite many other excellent shows up against it, there was never any other real contender. There’s no excuse not to be watching this one by now.
And now, last but not least…
New show of the year: Dr. Stone
youtube
This year really was insanely strong. It featured five – Five! – shows that easily could have been anime of the year in almost any other year in “The Promised Neverland”, “Demon Slayer”, “No Guns Life”, “Beastars”, and “Dr. Stone”. But I can’t in good conscience pick any show but “Dr. Stone” as new anime of the year. Like “The Promised Neverland” its premise is immediately eye-catching, but unlike that show it doesn’t have any weird pacing issues, and it has one of the most compelling protagonists ever.
The production values are not to the level of “Demon Slayer” and it doesn’t feature much action, but it explores ideas that are far more interesting and features moments that are just as hype as any fight scene. It doesn’t have the twisty plot or mature style of “No Guns Life” but it has an infectious enthusiasm for humanity that really makes you reflect on just how much our species has accomplished.
It’s a super optimistic show with a great premise, a great protagonist, great backgrounds, great character designs, great facial expressions, great ideas, and is overall the most fun I’ve had watching an anime this year. In a year of strengths, “Dr. Stone” stands out as the strongest. I am ten billion percent certain you’ll regret it if you miss it.
Bonus section – Disappointment of the year: “Carole and Tuesday”
This year featured in my opinion four contenders for the title. “Fire Force” was much hyped but ended up being mostly dull with bursts of action that were hard to be invested in thanks to the unmemorable characters and unimpressive plot. After an incredible season 1 “One Punch Man’s” second season was a dud that had none of the effort and passion that went into the original season of the show. “The Rising of the Shield Hero” was again much hyped but suffered from the same problems as every other isekai story even as it pretended it didn’t.
But while the easy pick for disappointment of the year is “One Punch Man”, I’m not going to pick that. Really, didn’t we all know it would be bad when we heard Madhouse wasn’t going to be handling it? Instead I’ll have to give the award to “Carole and Tuesday”, a Shinichiro Watanabe show about a rich girl in a sci-fi future who moves to the city to make it big in music, where she teams up with a poor waitress and they form a band. Watanabe, the legendary director of classics like “Cowboy Bebop”, “Samurai Champloo”, and “Space Dandy” putting out a show centered around music? How could it miss?
Alas, miss it did. The first episode was one of the most predictably trite first episodes I’ve ever seen for a show. It did absolutely nothing interesting. The characters weren’t interesting, the worldbuilding wasn’t interesting, the animation wasn’t interesting…nothing. It was just bland, bland, bland – the last thing I expected from a Watanabe show. Listen to the soundtrack and ignore the rest of it. It’ll save you some time.
