Another reason why Episode Nagi is a shoujo manga
One thing from Episode Nagi chapter 21 hit me hard. I mean the moment when Nagi was thinking about how Reo believed in him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No one had ever placed hope in Nagi before. He himself has also never shown any initiative before. Nagi didn't seem like a person who would do something or be motivated to act because he believed in himself.
It wasn't until he realized that someone believed in him. Thanks to this faith, he began to act. And when there was no one around who believed in him, he was left with faith in himself.
However, Nagi would never believe in himself unless someone (Reo) believed in him first. Without it, he would still remain passive and do nothing with his life.
When I noticed this dependence, I immediately thought that a similar philosophy was presented in Fruits Basket (shoujo manga).
I'm specifically talking about story of Kisa, who had problems getting along with her classmates. She received a letter from a teacher who briefly advised her to like herself first so that others would like her.
Tumblr media
However, Yuki did not agree with this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When someone likes you, you will like yourself.
When someone believes in you, you will believe in yourself.
In both cases, the entire change depends on the other person. The character won't do much on their own because they need some motivator to influence them.
In Fruits Basket, this should not be surprising, because it is a shoujo manga that will focus on interpersonal relationships.
However, for example, in the main series of Blue Lock, where Isagi is the protagonist, the main character does not really need anyone's help for his development, because he is his own cause. Isagi does everything himself. Yes, he uses the help of others, but it is not perceived that way. He didn't need anyone else to believe in him to believe in himself. (Yes, this could be an example of his initial relationship with Bachira, when Meguru immediately began to have great hopes in Isagi. However, I don't see it as "Oh, Bachira believed in me, now I believe in myself! I wouldn't have gone this far, if it weren't for him.", because Isagi very quickly began to notice his own possibilities, which he was entitled to himself).
But Nagi is not like Isagi. He couldn't do anything on his own. He needed someone who would believe in him. If it weren't for Reo, his life would have come to a standstill. He would have no reason to believe in himself or work on himself.
Nagi is more like a shoujo protagonist who needs the presence of another person to initiate his development. He doesn't necessarily need this person all the time in order to continue to develop, but he certainly wouldn't be able to make any changes in his life without their constant presence in his mind.
And Episode Nagi (compared to Blue Lock) does not focus just on the independent development of the main character, but also devotes a lot of attention to his relationship with another person.
I'm not saying it doesn't exist in Blue Lock. It's just more emphasized in Episode Nagi, in a shoujo manga style.

Me: *talking about anime/manga that make you cry from feels* “And then there’s Fruit’s Basket-”
My Friend, surprised: Fruit’s Basket? Isn’t that just the one where a girl befriends some guys who turn into animals based on the Chinese, uh- what’s it- zodiac?
Me, already internally sobbing: no no you don’t understand, you DON’T UNDERSTAND. It’s not about the zodiac, it’s not about the curse, it’s not *about* those things even though they are cornerstones of the premise, it’s about the *characters* and it’s about the *people* and it’s about how people are broken and how trauma is different for everyone, how people are cruel but they are also kind. It’s about the little things in life that make you whole or break you down and how everyone around you is bleeding and laughing and living and dying just like you and even when you are alone you aren’t really, not unless you choose to be, because somewhere, someday, there is someone who will look at you and hold your shards and say “you are worth it”. It’s about how the best intentions can leave the biggest scars, and about learning to trust again or maybe even learning to trust for the first time. It’s about broken bridges and the mending of them. It’s about how selfishness and self-sacrifice each have their place, how too much of either is just as harmful as none at all.
It’s about the Cinnamon Sweet Girl who is afraid to be selfish even when giving and giving and giving of herself ends up hurting her and hurting those who love her and how they wish she would just speak up for herself even a little bit, because how will they know how to help her if she does not dare ask?
It’s about the Tsundere who fights and screams and screams and fights because maybe if he is loud enough, strong enough, good enough, people will look and see who he is rather than who he was molded to be, who rejects kindness because he mistakes it for pity and friendship for lies until it’s proven over and over and he thinks maybe this time it is safe to reach out his hand in return.
It’s about the Prince who does not know what a mother is or how to find one, who finds kindness to be something so rare and strange and yet when he sees someone hurting he is kind because kindness is a choice and he will choose to make it even when he isn’t sure how.
It’s about the Lying Man who loves something enough to realize it needs to be broken, like a limb that has healed wrong and needs to be broken and set anew even if it hurts that he has to do it and that he will be seen as evil because of it.
It’s about the Bubbly Child who actually is hurting because what parent looks on their child and hates them so much they would rather forget they exist? And so surely he must be Extra Happy And Good for the parent who remains because this parent at least bothers to love him.
It’s about the Cold Man who is cold because he cares and was punished for caring, who chose to cause hurt because at least if it is by his hand then he knows when the damage will stop and if he is not the one to do it then the one who comes after will not stop and never stops because pain is all they know.
It’s about the boy who doesn’t know how to make his own choices meeting the girl who refuses to let others make her own. It’s about secrets and lies and truths and lost things. It’s about so many characters who live on the side, except do they? Do they really? The protagonists might be the catalyst that brings them into our view, but they are themselves people with their own hurts and dreams and wants and loves and needs, and oh aren’t they all the more beautiful and make the world so much deeper because of it.
It’s about these characters who on the surface are all a recognizable Trope™ and you expect that to be all they are, because it’s a story, and they are not even the main characters, and some of them are not even alive anymore, for all they have such a deep effect on the story. Except then the writer picks them up in all their messy, beautiful glory, rotates them a few inches to the side so you can see the myriad of facets hidden under their surface and says “Look. Look at them and how much more they are and can be, look at them and tell me what parts of yourself you see.”
It’s about finding people who you can be weak around but who also make you want to be strong for them when they have their turn to break. It’s about how meeting someone doesn’t necessarily make them your other half, how love isn’t something perfect and clean. It’s messy and jagged and comes with strings trailing behind from the lives you lived apart and the hurts you gained along the way but oh isn’t it worth it, to find someone who is willing and wanting to love you anyway. Who will fight for you and with you and will work alongside you to keep this thing that grows between you even when it is hard and your hurts clash and your scars reopen and bleed.
It’s about consequences and how the hurting in turn can also hurt others, either without meaning to or very much meaning to, but how there is forgiveness in the world just as much as there are consequences. It’s about how nothing is meant to last, but isn’t it beautiful while it is here for the time that it is, and won’t it be better to remember it when it is healthy and strong than to cling to it and chain it and force it to stay alive past it’s time.
It’s about how sometimes even the largest things in this world are connected by the smallest of red strings.
It’s about how, even when you are hurting and wounded, even when life has torn you down, it’s worth moving forward, because happy endings do exist, you just have to fight for them, and find the people out there who will be willing to help you do so.

My friend: Know why [Akito and Shigure] are my favourite ship?
Me: (thinking) They're toxic and messed-up.
Me: No. Tell me why?
My friend: They see the darkness in each other and still accept each other. Haru and Rin are like the innocent version.
Me: Oh...
My friend: I just hope they become healthier...
Me: I think they will.

Fruits Basket Diaries, #5: Why Is Tohru A Saint?
[see part 1 here]
[see part 4 here]
This is part of an ongoing series where I’ll be cataloguing my experience rereading (and finishing for the first time) the Fruits Basket manga. I’ve just finished reading up to the end of the manga, so there will be spoilers for the whole story!
Especially at the beginning of the series, Fruits Basket delights in making fun of its central character. Tohru, a hardworking teen who is desperate not to inconvenience anyone around her, is often visually portrayed in an unnecessarily dramatic manner, staged like an old painting of a martyr or a saint. Set against allusions to countless old stories of innocent, holy sacrificial lambs, Tohru's dedication to always being self-reliant and never expressing negativity just comes off as silly. She isn't bravely, peacefully facing an inevitable death on the gallows like those the artwork sarcastically compares her to--she's just stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the loving people around her.
Tohru's need to always be accommodating and convenient, to ask nothing of those around her, is poked & prodded at by the story as she faces the various struggles that come from being a teenager without a guardian, like finding a place to live and choosing someone to attend her parent-teacher conference, but the biggest challenge comes from Akito. Tohru is instinctively respectful of Akito, willing to accommodate his harsh methods, even as she finds herself repulsed by them. Halfway through the series, when Tohru has seen firsthand Akito's negative impact on the Zodiac members she cares for & has been threatened herself with the loss of her memory at his command, she is still accepting of the family's most damaging customs, still excited on Kyo's behalf when he is invited to join his family in visiting Akito at the annex.
Soon after, though, something finally changes when Tohru learns of Akito's paln to imprison the Zodiac members in the Sohma household for the rest of their lives. Despite Akito's aggressive appeals to her usual restraint & politeness (he tells her "don't butt in", a statement which rings painfully in Tohru's head long after the actual conversation), Tohru becomes resolved to work against him. She's learned of Yuki's dreams of living "outside", of Kyo's goal of inheriting the dojo, and she knows that Akito's plan stands in the way of what the two want. Though she deeply fears disrespecting the Sohma family's way of being, it hits her in this moment that Akito's disrespect of his family members is worse than anything she could do, and far too great to ignore.
After Tohru makes this realization, all hell breaks loose--Tohru starts to sneak around undercover and even breaks into the Sohma house, and then she gets into what is probably her first fight ever, and it's all AWESOME :) I love that, for all the story challenges Tohru earlier by forcing her to rely on others, and even does so later in her fight against Akito, at this pivotal moment it is understanding of the core of her politeness--a deep respect for the freedom of others--and allows her to make a big break in character that is still based on this value. Instead of rejecting herself, Tohru becomes more herself even while embracing more aggressive actions, I think.
Later, when we learn about Tohru's parents from Kyo's perspective, I think it's easier to understand where this storyline about Tohru unlearning the obsessive, unproductive standards she holds herself to comes from. Before Kyo shares what he knows, Tohru's father, Katsuya, is only described to us as very polite & as the source of Tohru's manners, which becomes really funny when we meet him in Kyo's story--Katsuya is someone who delights in annoying others and could not care less about what those around him find convenient, a far cry from Tohru's mindset. Sure, he's polite, but only as a thin veil over his general disdain for others so that he can look good and get what he wants.
In the same way, the Kyoko who Tohru introduces us to is a goddess, ever-loving and positive about her life. Though Tohru discusses her mother's prior gang involvement, it's always played off as a joke and limited to abstract references. Kyo, in contrast, tells us everything--I think because he, unlike Tohru, sees Kyoko as simply a human. In the scenes where Kyoko and Kyo talk, it seems like she treats him as a confidante, the same way she might treat an adult friend--it's quite strange, and it reminded me that, after Katsuya's death, Kyoko lost half of her former social circle of two. Rejected by her family and the majority of her husband's family, ostracized by her peers because of her reputation as a gang member, and perhaps not particularly good with social skills anyway, given her often-avoidant communication, Kyoko is left venting to Kyo, a kid who might not even be in elementary school at this point and who doesn't fully understand what she's saying. Through the introduction of Kyo's perspective, I realized that yeah, Kyoko is a little strange--though she truly does seem satisfied, her life is far from perfect. Her love for Tohru and seemingly endless energy are strong, but they probably aren't everything she needs, either.
Tohru is a combination of the idolized versions of both of her parents, well-mannered in a way that is rooted in legitimate affection. It's no wonder that she struggles to keep up with the standards she has for herself--they're modeled after perfect people who exist, and existed, only in Tohru's mind. I love how Tohru starts to break from this perfection, becoming generally burdensome (in perfectly acceptable, human ways!) while maintaining her core value of respect for others--instead of trying to be her parents, with no consideration for her own self as she acts out their idealized personas, Tohru becomes a person inspired by her parents, able to respond to the unique challenges of her own life in far more effective ways, and with much less anxiety.
From Fruits Basket's beginning to its end, Tohru is seen as extraordinarily loving. Even as she treats her own ideas and opinions with more and more importance when it comes to making her decisions, this perception from those around her never changes. As she becomes healthier, she doesn't have to become less loving--she just becomes more real, and I think that's beautiful :)

Watching more fruits basket :)
Not sure how I feel about my tastes not changing much over the past decade XD I still love Yuki, and Uo, AND I FORGOT ABOUT TOHRU'S GRANDDAD SLAPPING HER COUSIN ABDHQHDIW that was satisfying
Every time I start feeling bad for Kyo, he opens his mouth or does something that annoys me. I don't like tsundere characters, i never have.
I'm really liking the new series so far. And from what little I remember of the original, the animation is soooo much better.

Curses and True Forms: Reading Fruits Basket as a lesbian
Tumblr media
Content warning: discussion of homophobia, both societal and internalized; familial abuse
Spoilers for Fruits Basket (manga and 2019 anime)
Though its name is fruity by nature, the best-selling and beloved Fruits Basketisn’t necessarily the first title that comes to mind when I think “queer manga.”
The first time I read the series, this wasn’t exactly a surprise to me. Despite shoujo manga serving as the foundation for both early BL (boys’ love) and early yuri, collective memory of 90s/early 2000s shoujo manga tends to center zany, at times melodramatic, and above all very straight plotlines. Even when these stories are riddled with queer subtext, it’s most likely by accident or intentionally played for laughs. The main or “serious” aspects of these stories always stay within the safety of cisheteronormativity… or do they?
In the article “The Transient Queerness of Fruits Basket,” Garrick Shultz gave an excellent critique of the problematic handling of queerness within Fruits Basket. Her analysis is thought-provoking and solid, and I offer my perspective not in opposition, but as a reclamation of sorts.
As a lesbian, Fruits Basket was not written for me. Even so, the romance between Kyo and Tohru resonates deeply with my experience of queerness.

⁙ spick and span, ft. gojo and geto
Tumblr media
or, how well they keep themselves and your home clean.
▸gn! reader; 0.65k wc; manga spoilers + fluff, fluff and fluff; gojo and geto in their twenties (mid to late, maybe) (couldn't find another image, sorry); established relationship (married in case of geto) ▸the classic 'wrote this instead of studying/sleeping' (it was one a.m. when i wrote this lmao). anyways, characters, image and divider used aren't mine. please don't plagiarize, translate or repost this. enjoy reading! ❤️
Tumblr media
gojo satoru
at a personal level, the man is unbelievably spruce and tidy.
i mean, you've seen him, right?
designer clothes or clean ironed uniform, neatly trimmed hair with *those* bangs, clean shaved face - there's no way in hell he is not hygienic. i bet you, he also uses those costly af soaps, bath bombs & perfumes with citrus scents and woody undertones.
the literal king of self-care, if you will.
yet when the story comes to his surroundings...
umm, let's say you'll be a lot a little disappointed. and a little mad. maybe. definitely.
if the two of you live at an estate with servants at your beck and call, you'll have a lot less mess to yell about.
but if you both decide to stay in a place by yourselves - y'know, the way ordinary people do - well... friendly advice, keep a strip of aspirin handy. [you'll need it, trust me.]
from empty candy wrappers beneath the couch to dirty clothes in a heap outside the washroom to mission papers strewn across the dining table to bed unmade till the noon, this man just *does not* know how to clean up after himself.
initially, it isn't a problem. you're in love with him, he's in love with you - every extra chore you do for him doesn't appear a chore.
and gojo, being the oblivious busybody he is, continues leaving his messes behind for you to manage.
[not knowingly, of course. satoru loves you way too much to trouble you that way. but he does it all the same.]
years of being the spoilt brat of a loaded clan might do that, you reckon - so you excuse him, again and again and again - until it becomes too fucking much and you decide to talk to him.
cue hours of scolding countered by flirting, followed by a decision to sleep separately, followed by a terribly sad, terribly sleepy, terribly cute face begging for your forgiveness at three in the morning.
the next weekend and every weekend after that, satoru and you clean your house together. like the equal partners you are. [not that you've a lot to clean, though. your darling of a boyfriend turns awfully careful about keeping your home tidy after that night's drama. to your immense relief and glee. ;)]
geto suguru
another man who is perfect in personal hygiene.
being the leader of a cult, he has to meet many people throughout the day, so obviously he has got to keep himself presentable.
and yes, he is a worthy contender for the throne of self-care.
moisturizers, face washes, face packs, shampoos, conditioners, fragrant soaps, colognes - you name it, the man's got it in his self-care cabinet. [which is periodically updated to keep up with the trends, thanks to mimiko and nanako.]
now, with respect to his surroundings...
suguru is a pretty neat and organized person - a polar opposite to his ex-bff. [why do i always drag poor gojo into everything? smh.]
fruit peelings disposed into the right bin, worn clothes thrown in the laundry basket, papers arranged in stacks on the study table, bed made within minutes of rising.
no matter the stress he has to face from dealing with curses and monkeys, suguru never fails to tidy up after himself.
although there are times when he is too tired to do anything - in those instances, you always clean up after him with a soft smile.
your husband works hard day and night to provide for you and your daughters. the least, you think, you can do in return is lighten the weight on his shoulders, in whichever way you can.
though, i must warn you - be prepared to drown in a sea of his apologies and affections for the next day [or days - depends on how much work you've done for him].
one hell of an immaculate mass-murderer, and special-grade simp, if i must say.

Tumblr media
kyo sohma wondered why you loved him.
before the curse had even broken, before he came to terms with himself, you loved him. without a doubt, you only saw him as kyo sohma, the tsundere ginger you dearly loved.
but why? why love him when he was shunned and cursed out by most of his family for being a monster? kyo thought that maybe there was just something you weren’t seeing, but he realized that he was wrong. you saw everything, and it was everyone else that fell short of doing so.
you were never sohma in the first place, hence your unbiased opinion. the zodiac tale was merely a story passed on from one generation to another in your eyes. its words held no meaning.
despite that, you knew it held its weight to those it concerned. the moment that kyo was free of the curse, it was as if pounds of burden had been lifted off of his shoulders.
he was able to do something that he had held back on for so long. with a swift movement from his arm, he pulled you into a loving embrace.
“i’m yours,” he told you. “i’m all yours.”
it’s been quite some time since the zodiac curse broke, and he was happier than he ever was. with no restraints, he was free to live a life with the choices he could make. freedom had never been so beautiful, especially with you at his side.
you sat right at the small dining table while kyo cooked your guys’ lunch. as if you were a pro, you folded paper roses with red and green tissue paper. multiple completed roses were in a pile at the end of the table.
you had finished your task the moment kyo placed a covered bowl and chopsticks in front of you. on a day like today, he decided to make your favorite ramen.
after setting aside the roses, you excitedly took the bowl’s lid off. the steam cleared and you found yourself staring at the food with a small smile.
“hm, is this what i think it is?” you mused.
on top of the ramen and other toppings was a sunny-side-up egg. however, it was cooked in a soft heart shape.
you gushed, “aww, how cute of you, kyo!”
“don’t mention it,” he shyly looked to the side.
“here,” something red came into his vision. “a super special flower for my love.”
kyo stared at the homemade rose for a moment before gently taking it with his hand. crafted with your hands during your own time, you handed him something he would hold on to for as long as he could.
“super special is right. as long as it’s from you, it’s the most precious thing to me,” he met your eyes, smiling.
as his first love, he hopes you’ll be his last.

ROUND 3C, MATCH 3 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Saki:
Psychic goth girl who was cast as Cinderella in a school play. The play was so poorly cast overall that the entire script had to be rewritten, thus “Cinderella-ish” was born. Hanajima played a Cinderella dressed in all black, and when confronted by the fairy godmother, she simply wished for meat.
idk if this is what you meant by 'acting' as Cinderella but in-universe she got cast as Cinderella in the school play, and the characters ended up re-writing the entire play to work around her because she was too Goth and disinterested to play a classic Cinderella character.
She plays the best version of Cinderella. All she cared about was going to the ball for the barbecue. The episode she's in is a really good one as well.
Overall Saki is not a Cinderella character, but you did say we could submit them if they were Cinderella in an in-universe play, and that she was! In Season 2 Episode 23 "It's Cinderella-ish", her class puts on a production of Cinderella and she ends up getting cast as the titular role, which a lot of other characters think is crazy because she's this straight-faced, emotionally-repressed, exclusively-wears-black kinda girl. Also her best friend Tohru (the anime's protagonist) gets cast as an evil stepsister, and she's one of the sweetest people ever and has so much trouble being mean to Saki even fakely and vice versa. Of course, Saki has no problems being rude to the Prince Charming character in the play, played by Kyo, a guy who's sweet deep down (but only to Tohru and his adoptive father) but is other wise a hot head who's always getting into fights. So between Saki as Cinderella having a genuine love for her stepsister and a general animosity with the prince, in addition to the fact that when she goes to the ball, all she wants to do is eat, not mingle, she makes for a very interesting Cinderella.
so this shoujo series has a storyline where the class puts on a Cinderella play but instead of the heroine playing Cinderella, shenanigans happen that lead to the heroine's goth best friend, Saki Hanajima, aka Hana-chan, aka Demon Queen, playing the lead role. Hana-chan's Cinderella dresses in all black against the wishes of the play's director, does not give 2 shits about the prince, and is just a general menace to society. I know she's probably not gonna win but I just wanted to share her with all of you bc I love her and the Cinderella-ish arc is to this day some of the funniest shit I've seen in a manga
their high school class decided to randomize who played which characters in their production of Cinderella & the creepy goth girl got cast as Cinderella & her painfully kind-hearted bestie got cast as the evil stepsister (among other mismatched roles) so they rewrote the play into "Sorta Cinderella" & Cinderella became a deadpan, lazy girl who only wants the best for her darling step-sister & who only went to the ball for the food.  in the end, instead of marrying the prince she takes his money & opens a restaurant with her sister & I love that for them <3
Cendrillon:
[Mod's Note: Warning for Persona 5 spoilers]
Her Persona is Cinderella. Her story is about disguising herself as another person to gain acceptance.
Her persona is Cendrillon, the French name for Cinderella and the name of an opera based on the story, and it mirrors her arc in the game. When you boil her down to the essentials, she essentially made a wish that was granted by her....... fairy godtherapist to go from pauper (bland and talentless depressed Sumire) to princess (her dead sister Kasumi, bubbly, personable star gymnast). As far as she sees it, even, it's this transformation that helps her 'get the prince' (read: befriend the protagonist). Why should she win, though? Umm because she's my baby my angel my sweetie my cherub specialist character in fiction and most important girl in the universe. Out of love in your heart for me, tumblr user [REDACTED], vote for her.
GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH ok ok ok everyone here's my autism. Major spoilers as you get closer to the end btw! - She has three personas, in order they go: Cendrion, Vanadis, Ella. The first and last are taken from Cinderella, with Cendrion being the german name for Cinderella, and of course Ella just being a shortened form of Cinderella. - She does gymnastics, although a lot of her phantom thief design is heavily based off of ballet as well! In particular the black swan mimicking the white swan, and while of course that's not cinderella, it does remind me of how Cinderella was treated in the beginnings of the story - Cinderella and her both have major sibling trauma! It's a huge point about her character. Major spoilers, but she pretends to be her older sister Kasumi for most of the game; the sad truth is that she's in fact the younger sister Sumire. She's pretending to be her older sister because she can't deal with the trauma of that day she ran out into traffic and her sister got hit instead of her. (It does not help that her therapist uses eldritch god powers to gaslight her into thinking she is her sister.) - They're both pretty and also I love sumi so much she's everything to me. unironically the character of all time NOT FOR PROPAGANDA but for mod: image because it can be awkward to find one: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UyOsg26GnZU/maxresdefault.jpg also!!!! if you're interested in not potentially spoiling people you should call her Kasumi Yoshizawa. If you aren't worried about that though and want to be accurate, Sumire Yoshizawa is better. Or just call her Violet because that's her codename!
Initially introduced as Kasumi, she is a dorky and sweet first-year student who looks up to the protagonist as a mentor and eventually joins the Phantom Thieves in figuring out the fake reality they're trapped in. However, it's revealed that she's actually Kasumi's sister Sumire, who was always stuck in her more talented sister's shadow and yearned to be Kasumi. Unfortunately, she got her wish when her sister died saving her and her therapist brainwashed her into believing herself to be Kasumi. With help from the protagonist, Sumire realizes she was holding herself back and breaks free from her false identity, embracing her true self and rebelling against the hollow utopia. Her initial Persona--an embodiment of her true self--is Cendrillon, and her third tier ultimate Persona is Ella.
Sumire dosen't just pretends to be her dead sister, she was brainwashed into believing to be her by the final act's main villain/her fairy godfather figure, because that was her (misguided by trauma) wish as she believed that her sister was better than her. The final acts has a lot of 'making wishes come true' theme that connects her to Cinderella even more, also she does have a bit of 'save by the prince' thing going on with the game's protagonist
Please please vote my girl!!
Sumire is such a cute and cool character and deserves to leave the life of cinders how the fandom treats her and be a shiny princess!!

Fruits Basket Diaries, #6: Why Do I Adore Ayame So Much?
[see part 1 here]
[see part 5 here]
This is part of an ongoing series where I’ll be cataloguing my experience rereading (and finishing for the first time) the Fruits Basket manga. I’ve just finished reading up to the end of the manga, so there will be spoilers for the whole story!
Fruits Basket is full of unrequited loves, both platonic and romantic. Usually, these kind of "lost love" relationships, ones based in a history of complete infatuation on one side that isn't mirrored on the other, either turn into romance stories or are filled with distress, but Fruits Basket takes a very different approach, allowing these relationships to exist as a unique variety of affection, something soft and tender instead of fiery and dramatic. We get to see characters who feel love and admiration for those who don't quite reciprocate live peacefully with those feelings, using them as the source of a strong friendship rather than screaming them from the rooftops. These characters (Ayame, Haru, Hanajima), get to find lovers of their own while their former (and, admittedly, still a bit current) obsession (Hatori, Yuki, Tohru) does the same, but they never have to pretend their feelings don't exist--in fact, they still have loving friendships with their former obsessions, even if they aren't "the one" for them.
We also see the beginnings of these kind of relationships within Fruits Basket--Momiji watches Tohru leave with Kyo and hopes he'll find someone of his own one day; Kagura retains her affection for Kyo, even while she acknowledges his relationship with Tohru; Yuki gets a dramatic, tearful goodbye with Tohru, even as she connects with Kyo and he gets closer with Machi. For these characters, "moving on" doesn't mean leaving their feelings behind, it just means accepting new parts of life along with the old; as Hanajima puts it so beautifully, "My weakness will always be Tohru-kun". And yeah, I get that. I've spent a lot of time trying to cleanse myself of feelings, to just make them go away so everything can "be normal". Eventually, though, I found that truly accepting and loving the part of myself that fell in love with the person in the first place, the part of myself that still sees them and glows a bit, is what has truly helped me move forward in relationships like these without guilt. Because yes, there will always be people who are my weaknesses, people who I was once infatuated with and who I still have a strong attachment to, and that doesn't have to be painful. Hanajima gets the best of both worlds, it seems--she lives her own life outside of Tohru, but she also loves Tohru enough to fight for her happiness. This dynamic mirrors my experiences with some of the most important people in my life, and I think that's why each of the three pairings I mentioned earlier, ones I see as the main examples of this dynamic, is so special to me. Seeing Haru and Yuki's friendship develop as Yuki realizes how deeply Haru cares for him and starts to reach out in return was especially comforting, putting a positive spin on Haru's long-held affection instead of forcing him to "get over" it.
There's this one quote from the final volume: "But the one thing I do know is that love isn't just about loving what's in front of you. The past, the future... maybe it's about holding all of them close to your heart." Maybe past infatuations don't have to be regrettable, failures to sweep under the rug--through the relationships it shows, Fruits Basket finds the potential of the past to make the present beautiful, even when not everyone's dreams came true back then. The people I would consider my weaknesses, as Hanajima said, were, are, and will be the source of many special moments in my life. Even as I pursue relationships and goals I never would have dreamed of in my younger days, there are still people from those days I would drop everything to support, and that, Fruits Basket reminds me, is, indeed, a special kind of love.

What are the things that I am excited to see in the upcoming RKDD anime
Warning: Long-ish. This is NOT spoiler-free, but you are all right if you are reading the manga
The onsen scene where Toto and Ron, whose body should indicate that he’s working out four hours every day, are naked, bathing, two feet probably apart, then Amamiya shows up, Venus-like
Ron doing his archery (Kyūdō), meticulous and very majestic
Tumblr media
Ron singing/humming his “Kamo, Kamo” ditty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sound when Ron does his deduction ecstasy, his eyes sparkle.
Tumblr media
Ron breaking down due to depression and frustration (he told Toto once that it is better to take sleeping pills and get to sleep for three straight days; this sounds like a normal thing)
Tumblr media
Ron doing his hula hoop challenge during the Island Observatory Murder case.
Toto affirming he’ll support Ron no matter what
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toto wouldn’t get sidelined. How will anime writer Wataru Watari interpret Toto? He’s so pure, but he’s not stupid. Making good at his work, helping those who are in need, solving crimes are not for kicks, but they are Toto’s principles to make sure that him working in the police force is something he can be proud of, especially if he would have gotten it through connections
Tumblr media
Toto doing his sutras for the dead (makura-kyo, literally death guidance/pillow sutra)
Tumblr media
Dr. Mofu wearing Ron’s platypus costume going for a swim
Depictions of Ron’s intake of brown sugar syrup
Winter Moriarty showing up serving with the androgynous looks. I clock Winter as a trans man and that the writer will designate, once and for all, which pronouns the character must use
Tumblr media
Honestly, I am curious of the soundtrack they are going to use. Samples of Yo Tsuji’s composition can be found here.
Lastly, that the anime will be made well, decent enough for the fans to be proud of. The ending scenes will make sense, the duo’s last shots will be iconic. And that second season won’t be far off.
My choices for the voice actors:
Ron Kamonohashi - Yuma Uchida (Jujutsu Kaisen, Given, Fruits Basket, Banana Fish, etc.) ; second choice - Kōki Uchiyama (his filmography is so longggg)
Totomaru Isshiki - Chiaki Kobayashi (Great Pretender, SK8 Infinity, Disney: Twisted-Wonderland, Moriarty the Patriot, etc.)
Amamiya - Marina Inoue (Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc.)
Milo Moriarty - Junichi Suwabe, hands down!
Winter Moriarty - Maaya Sakamoto, Romi Park, or Megumi Ogata
Spitz Feier - Nobunaga Shimazaki (Free!, Jujutsu Kaisen, Parasyte, Fruits Basket, etc.)
Dr. Hirsch - Tsuda Kenjiro (take him, take him!)
How about you? What are your expectations for the upcoming anime version? Your wishes for the RKDD anime? After all, it is Christmastime.
