It’s just interesting to observe the differences in how people treat Zukka vs how they treat Zutara. Because I searched Zutara on TikTok to look for some edits and the comments were filled to the brim with people saying “But Katara belonged with Aang 🥺” or “How can you ship Zuko with her after Mai said such a romantic line?” Or perhaps the most insufferable of all “Maturing is realizing that Zuko would’ve thrown himself in from of lightning for ANYONE” as if that’s some revolutionary reading of the text. It’s so irritating how this kind of behaviour is…accepted by the fandom.

But you don’t get that with Zukka, instead you see people gushing over how sweet they are together, hailing it as a wholesome and unproblematic ship, praising artworks of it with positivity and appreciation. It’s difficult to find much negativity under Zukka posts, you won’t see people saying “But Sokka belongs with Suki 🥺” or boldly going on a tangent about how another ship is SO much better. I saw one person praise Zukka as the most unproblematic ATLA ship because of how little conflict there was about it, that you wouldn’t see the same hostility among that fandom as you might with Zutara.

But there’s a reason for that which has less to do with Zutara shippers themselves, and more to do with the harassment and hostility they face on all sides of the fandom. Fans will go out of their way to antagonize Zutara shippers, they’ll feel brazen enough to leave backhanded or outright hostile comments under Zutara posts and art, they’ll interject their shipping opinions in spaces where nobody asked and condescend Zutara shippers by framing them as shallow or delusional for shipping it.

I think Zukka is admittedly cute, and they definitely have their haters, but the difference between it and Zutara is astounding. It’s incredibly frustrating to watch this phenomenon play out, especially when these shippers carry themselves with a kind of false moral superiority that can only be found in shipping discourse.

Lately I've seen a lot of complaining in the dungeon meshi tag about how now there is a lot more m/m works on ao3 than f/f but like farcille is still the most written pairing and by a lot :

And the reason why m/m is more popular is because there are more possible pairings like labru, kabumisu, chilshi, laishuro and others, while f/f ships with the main characters the only available options are farcille and marcille/izutsumi. And Kabru being the most shipped character with the male characters it's kinda cool because it is still rare to see characters with dark skin being shipped with the main character in anime fandoms (I literally can't think of any another example of a character with dark skin being part of the most popular slash ship in a anime fandom).

Kinda got a love/hate relationship with the history of K/S because it's like. Can I please have a queer discussion about this 1960s television show without it being reduced to "shipper discourse". I thought Spock and Kirk were homo long before I knew that their characters spawned a fanfiction counterculture. honestly the funniest part about the quodo kiss blooper is that kira had like no reaction to it. it just made so much sense that even she just stood there and watched it happen

I'm kind of mad that I let tumblr convince me that the Confession Scene was going to be cringe and bad and possibly borderline offensive, when it was actually sweet in the most heartbreaking of ways.

Like the events bracketing it were.... ehhhh (it's s15 what do you expect?), and Misha Collin's acting could've been improved, but I think it was genuine and kind in a lot of ways. Like s15 Dean has been so desperate and convinced that he's a terrible person with severe anger issues who only hurts the people around him, and Cas tells him that, no, Dean is lovable and the best thing about him is how much he loves the people around them and tries to take care of them. He's not led by anger or hate, he's motivated by love and that's why Cas loves him.

Again, the premise and the whole Empty thing is.... ehhh (it's s14 and s15 what did you expect?), but the actual scene itself in isolation is great. 10/10 made me cry, never listening to tumblr about anything ever again.

i get that. it was supposed to be subtle, building to a new beginning rather than a true shipping fic, but i can get being disappointed that this famous zutara fic doesn't have a whole lot of zutara

such selfish prayers is really about katara falling in love with katara

the emotional thrust of the story is katara growing into herself and becoming who she's always wanted to be, and the "ship" is, in a way, kata/ang, but in the sense of --

it's katara and aang coming to terms. realizing that they're better as friends, but that their friendship is deeply important to both of them, and they do love one another. it's not romantic, but the whole story is building to the coda where they can stand at the ground-breaking of republic city -- where he recognizes that she's engaged to zuko now, and congratulates her -- as friends, again

such selfish prayers is very much an idealistic story. the politics are idealistic and the relationships are idealistic, too. the guy i had recently broken up with, when i wrote it, ultimately couldn't be my friend again. politics are a dark and deadly mess. things don't always -- or even often -- work out for the better.

but such selfish prayers is about what we want to make happen, and believing that we can do it, if we don't give up. it's about hope, and optimism, and having faith in the future, and in falling in love with ourselves and growing into a life that fulfills us

the real love story is katara, for once, putting her own desires -- her own selfish prayers -- first, and choosing what she wants, after a lifetime of putting other people first

such selfish prayers is a katara fic first and a zutara fic second, and i understand people -- who were expecting another stormbenders or once around the sun or incendiary -- might be disappointed that it's not really that much of a zutara fic, but zutara wasn't actually the story i was telling

it's a love letter to katara, first and foremost and last and at the core and at the end, it's all about her, and what she deserved

the zutara is just a bonus.

It feels like among those who prefer father/son interpretation alarming amount of people (not all ofc, but what feels like majority) are not aware that they can enjoy what they enjoy without necessarily hating on ship interpretations and calling people names. It feels like for most of them it's not even so much about PRO-father/son but rather ANTI-hankcon and this thing is just toxic as fuck

Like in most father/son posts that I encountered it's like people MUST express hate at least in the tags or they'll combust or something, it's almost rare to see this interpretation on its own without hate attached to it. Quite funny how shippers are more often be like "you can interpret it both ways however platonic or romantic you prefer", and on the other side is "if you see them as anything but familial go kys"
