FT Tower of Heaven Manga compared to Anime (March 2021)

I finished reading my "Sacred Fairy Tail Texts" (aka my Masters Edition volume) and I noticed quite a few differences from the anime. Specifically in the Tower of Heaven arc. (volume 10)

For starters, the Tower itself is completely changed. The anime makes it a far more dark and unsettling atmosphere. This is also seen from the change of the door that Natsu and the others enter through.

Second, the anime replaces Cancer with Virgo. In the manga Lucy does not summon her and Cancer brings along clothes with him for Lucy to change into. There's also no spread of food in a random place when they get inside.

In the manga, Jellal isn't even known by the members of the council. But in the anime they immediately recognize the name of "Siegrain's twin brother" Also Mashima continues to hide Jellal's face for a while even after he's revealed as a child in the flashback. While the anime just does a dark but still transparent shadow over his face.

Speaking of flashbacks. Simon's face is changed a lot in the anime. Child Simon looks more like his adult self in the manga.

And this last thing is pretty minor, but Simon goes to Wally and Milliana to tell them that Erza escaped in the manga. In the anime its just 2 guys who work under Jellal who warn them. Again minor, still thought I'd mention it though.

So that's all the changes I noticed so far. I really like the anime adaptation of this arc. And reading has been fun!

Awwwwwww, Gray and Lucy made up with Sho immediately and started teasing him like they do with everyone that's so cute.

The little independence speech Sho gives is so cute but like...... Y'all ain't alone and you ain't even trying to be...... You're sticking together.... And that's adorable and I support you, but you can't say that you're making you own way and living for your own self etc, when you're actually leaning on your friends for support to help you find your reason for being. They're different. Quite similar, and I'm definitely not wording this as well as it could be worded, but what you three are doing is arguably better than completely making your own way.

I love the amount they go through in the Tower of Heaven arc and how it's all peacefully resolved by the start of Battle of Fairy Tail. They've all grown so much and- oh god, Gajeel singing.

I physically cringe at his singing in the English version, but I gotta admit, it is better in the Japanese. It's still horrific, but it's definitely better. I can actually stand listening to it now. I was actually so fucking scared for a minute there.

But back to the cute speech. They've all grown so much, and gotten so much better.

.

Levy is so sweet and forgiving, and Gajeel is so accepting of the fact he's made mistakes. When Jet and Droy attack him to settle the score, he just takes it. He knows he deserves it, and he's already with it; he wants to make up for what he's done.

But the second Laxus shows up, you can feel something changed. He's still willing to just take it. He's absolutely determined to not fight back. But he's getting angry. And the second Laxus moves to attack Levy, he stops staying still and throws himself in to take the hit.

He isn't about to have others be hurt for his mistakes again.

One of my favourite things about Fairytail is the representation of female bonds:

Meta ahead.

Like you often see Lucy and Erza sharing one braincell, Lucy and Wendy doing fun activities together, the bond between Mavis and Zera, Lucy and Cana. It is genuine and not just for the sake for having female characters but real friendship.

As much as Lucy is around Natsu, she never ignores her girlfriends for the sake of it. Lucy even asked Cana to be her teammate during Tenrou trials well knowing that Natsu is stronger and will have a better chance.

And they even succeed they trial with easy...

Such girlboss!

And even Juvia who gets a lot of sh*t for being reduced to a love interest has solid girl bonds outside of Gray. She's friends with Meredy, Erza, Cana is always teasing Juvia about Gray and especially with Lucy, her bond has came a long way.

And do I have to remind you that Lucy and Juvia did the first UNISON RAID if the series?

A spell that wizards aren't able to master for decades and need an especially close sync bond? A move that even surprised Jellal? Lucy and Juvia managed to do it in the first try!

And this is after Juvia defeated Keys in Tartaros. Juvia was trying to save Lucy from Keys and when she passed out after the battle, Lucy catches her. When Juvia starts crying, Lucy cries with her.

Wendy and Chelia share quite a spectacular bond along with Wendy and Erza. Chelia was such a friend that knowingly and willingly sacrificed her Magic to save her best friend and defeat a God.

Even Erza is friends with Milliana and later Kagura and Minerva.

Lucy also has a lot of connections outside the guild, like Brandish which is the daughter of her mom's best friend and her current rival in finding Aquarius's key.

We have Lucy and Yukino, who are mutual Celestial spirit mages that share quite a history together. She was with Lucy in the GMG and CSK arc and made an appearance in the recent chapter when Lucy had a monologue about her friends.

Lucy and Mira are also very close. You can see that Lucy finally starts crying after Mira says "Welcome Home, Lucy" because it was Mira that welcomed her to Fairytail even the first time around. She is also the one that gave Lucy her pink Guildmark. Mira has always been a big sister to Lucy giving her advices, looking out for her and the guild.

She is family.

And this is why when Lucy says that she's home it contains so much value.

I agree that Ft may not be the best manga out there and many people may disregard it saying it has a lot of Fanservice but you can't deny that it has one of the best representation of female cast in Manga especially when compared to the likes of Naruto or BnHA where some people have claimed pure Mysogyny.

The reason why in the recent popularity poll, the top 3 are all females and the main Shonen protagonist is in 5th spot. Even before it was Erza that was usually on the No.1 spot and now it belongs to Lucy.

So while people say ft treats women with no respect, I say that the real respect is shown in how well they are written and not by the number of clothes they wear.

Okay the Earthland comment was me just getting the names mixed up. That's on me and I did mean to say Fiore. But I don't know about Toby. The fact that the ears seem to move in the anime, match his skin color, and don't seem to have any explanation like Milliana's cat ears being her hair is so odd to me. That and his other canine features makes me think that he might be at least part beastperson. Maybe a parent was one of them? But hey, for such a minor character, it's only amounts to headcanon.

Haha the Earthland part is a minor thing, no worries no worries. Specifics are eh.

Toby made it very clear they were decorative tho? He even snapped at Yuka about it because he joked about him being affected by Moon Drip. I guess we can make a half beastman point, but the ears probably just move because anime yanno? Kinda like how eyes pop out when they're surprised. The matching skin is just details at that point, they could've been any colour really. His face is doglike too, but generally if we want an out of universe answer, Mashima was taking liberties with character design because this is fantasy, so anything goes. But oh well headcanons can be.

Or maybe they can be moved like actual ears once some form of magic is cast on it-- I'd say this would definitely be popular in the FT universe.

At least the damn theme song is working. Every opening for this show is a bop.

My only solace for this arc is that the Battle of Fairy Tail arc is coming soon, and I frickin love that arc so much.

Ohhhhh loooooook, totally normal and innocent beach episode. They're just chillin at the Akane Resort, Lucy's burying Gray in sand and giving him sand boobs, Natsu stealing Gray's underwear the usual.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Gray is honestly such an icon, he's so chill with making casual conversation with his previous enemy, even when she's acting really weird, and he's so okay with her wanting to join Fairy Tail. His only concern is other people's thoughts. And when he gets straight up attacked his first thought is "shit, is she okay, she was like right next to me". How fucking precious.

And one of the good moments of Juvia; she doesn't start getting obsessive over Gray, she just gets protective. Someone tries to hurt him, and she puts herself directly in the line of danger instead. She tells the attacker (who's name I totally remember) that he's not allowed to hurt him. She's behaving selflessly, but calmly and reasonably.

Honestly I've totally forgotten about Sho till now, but daaaaaaaamn, he cute. And Milliana is adorable, as always.

.

Gray is so forgiving and I love him. And Juvia is really frickin smart when she's not being an obsessive little stalker. They honestly could've been such good fucking friends, even romantic Gruvia could've been really fucking cute, but nooooooooooo she had to ruin it.
