Why Am I Waiting…?
I keep asking myself:
“Why am I waiting to share my Finn-Huntress Wizard analyses?”
And...
I am pretty sure it is because I am biased towards Finn x Huntress Wizard, and I totally don’t wish to get off into a ship war or something with my obsession...because I am very, very defensive and passionate about it for very personal reasons. It means something to me just as any ship has ever meant anything to anyone else. I just relate to it so well, and I want it to work. It would be heartbreaking otherwise (and I can live with that). Maybe it’s childish, but I can’t help it. It’s definitely embarrassing for me to ship this badly...but I am thinking that it has kind of been helpful for me. I am terrified of expressing myself in an over-emotional and messy manner...or being made fun of, but i don’t want to be terrified like that forever. I want to breathe and revel in my passions as I once did before anxieties took over my life, and for some reason I am compelled to do so through Finn and Huntress Wizard. It’s...very strange...but oh well. Maybe it’s my road to emotional recovery.
(I totally wrote this a different way at 5AM or so, but it was so spontaneous and messy that I had to clean it up.)
About My Bias
I like to be fair when it comes to shipping. In general, I hate shipping. The romantic subplot of most stories often feels unnecessary for the endgame of the story, but it’s a source of conflict and drama that’s fair and believable to have (even if it is often presented in cringeworthy ways). However, Adventure Time has some pretty solid and interesting ships I hope sail by the end of the series---namely Bubbline and Finntress Wizard. I’m more for the Finntress ship, so that’s what my bias is about.
From a coming of age storytelling perspective, the Finntress ship makes sense as a endgame ship. First crushes, especially one-sided crushes, don’t always work out and some never will (Fubblegum). Mutual crushes can be full of passion and beauty but can lead to bad consequences when the relationship is toxic, immature and lacking in proper communication; also, saying sorry for manipulative behavior without really understanding how badly it hurt the other person is not okay, and, sometimes, even if you are eventually truly sorry the relationship might be damaged beyond repair for romance to where one has to just suck it up and move on (Finn x Pheoble). Also, just because you love someone does not mean that you are entitled to them and that they are entitled to love you back, especially if you screwed that individual over. However, a mutual romance that’s not built on raw passion or feelings of entitlement but actual respect, communication, and selflessness (or love) is the type of relationship that shall most likely work out the best as both parties involved benefit and grow through the experience. (Finntress) Fintress feels like the ship that both Finn and HW have benefited from by being together to me, so I am biased towards it being endgame.
From My Perspective
After his breakup with Pheobe and after his depression about it, Finn put romance on hold...because he was obviously not ready for it and had other things come up in his life to focus on. I was totally all for Finn ending the series single...but then came Finn’s growing maturity and romance with HW in “Flute Spell”, and after “Wheels” and “Skyhooks II” kept teasing and foreshadowing (in my mind), I was hooked and began to look closely at the ship from its subtle angle.
As I constantly observed and analyzed my new ship obsession, I began to see a very different and subtle story being told concerning Finn and Huntress Wizard’s mutual romance, one that was sensible and believable for who these characters were supposed to be at this point in the series.
Huntress Wizard was a background character who lived in seclusion for most of her life (and most of the series) and continued to live in that seclusion even after her introduction in “Flute Spell”.
On Finn’s side of things, he was a young hero who had been through hell and had matured from the old bombastic wild child he had been at the start of the series. Finn had endured disappointment and heartache to the point that it had all mellowed him out considerably. He was older and had learned from his ding ups to become a new Finn, so when a new romance entered his life but did not pan out as he would have like, he handled it with a maturity that worked out for him in the long run.
This....just felt very relatable to me.
Sometimes, you are very tied down by “who you are”—i.e. what it means to be you. Huntress Wizard may have possessed feelings for Finn, and vice versa, but relationships require some sacrifice that she just was not ready for. Plus, in her case, she’s not going to just drop her identity all of a sudden and start dating just because this guy she likes comes along and says “Hey, I like you.” I mean, if she was looking to date, then yeah, maybe…but…in “Flute Spell” she wasn’t. She was definitely interested in Finn and spending the time she could with him but not in full on dating him, and I kind of sensed that that was how romance worked for her in the past—acknowledging it but never pursuing it fully due to her identity, beliefs, and lifestyle. Relationships require some sacrifice.
I have totally been there. I am there, and I am still trying to sort my life out before inviting someone else into it. I imagine HW as having been in the same position and having made her peace with wanting to be with Finn by the time we see her again in “The Wild Hunt” I also imagine this potential beginning of her relationship with Finn (and vice versa) as confirmation that this is okay to take time and wait it out before jumping head-long into romance. That it is okay to like someone, have them like you back, but not be ready for a relationship until much later when you have decided that there is room for it. That it is okay and better to wait.
I mean, if Finn had started pursuing a relationship with someone else in the time he and HW spent apart, then that would have been telling, but he didn’t. He did not collapse into depression or try to rebound…no. He put his emotions to the side, focused on his life (which was still dramatically changing), endured great change and self-discovery, and sufferred a great loss all before seeing her again as the changed person he was. And he still cared for her and vice versa. Huntress Wizard, herself, was very different, yet the same, in “The Wild Hunt”; she was not as rough and raw as she was in “Flute Spell”. She still WAS rough and raw but not exclusively or conflictedly so; this probably has much to do with her mostly being there to help Finn and approach her feelings for him in the most active manner she can versus just hunting beside him…but that is the analysis I tackle in my other writings. The point is that despite their time apart, despite having changed some since last seeing one another, their feelings for each other remained the same, which meant that they were obviously feelings worth pursuing.
In real relationships, I, personally, believe in time healing all wounds or opening the holes that were bound to crack open later. I don’t like rushing, and even when I super like someone (really crushing), I try to be myself but cautious (totally doesn’t always work) in hopes that time works out in our favor. Relationships are hard and can be very painful, but the rewards tend to outweigh the pitfalls in good ones. The Finntress Wizard ship is a representation of “time having lead to a more stable and reliable rewards outweighing the pitfalls” type relationship for me, so I am very biased (and obsessed) and praying that things shall work out as I want for both Huntress Wizard and Finn in terms of their romantic pursuit of each other. I honestly don’t want to imagine a different romantic story being told here at the end of Finn’s progrression into adulthood…because it’s just such a good story to tell.
I, personally, don’t want to see Fubblegum or Finn x FP or Huntress Wizard x Fern.
Fubblegum forced after Finn “grows up” would be highly cringe inducing. It is not totally out of the question, and I would not be surprised to see a timeskip say “Hey, they worked it out!” But it would be so….“Ughhh!!! Seriously?!” An injustice to a fandom so loyal to only be mislead in the end.
(Also, I actually like Bubbline because it has been healthy for both characters so far, and who wouldn’t want that for two people. Personal sexual preferrence be damned!) (I am hetero-demisexual…if I have to throw a label on in. I don’t consider myself romantic at all.)
I don’t want to see Finn x Flame Princess because that relationship hit so many toxic points for me that I am, quite literally and punnily (is this even a word? An adjective? Guess it is now), burned on the whole Finn x Pheobe ship. It rubs my heart the wrong way. Plus, I absolutely love how both Finn and Pheobe developed as friends after their pretty bad break up. Why shit on that now?
Huntress Wizard and Fern...............
Yeah. No. I’m totally down for any ship that makes sense, but this one makes absolutely no sense because there has been absolutely no build up to it whatsoever.
(This is about to get long winded, so if you wish to avoid a rant, skip this next section. This post is already long.)
My Short Thoughts on HW x Fern (RANT)
In theory, it’s cute. In theory, and that’s about all it’s going to be for me unless the finale pulls a “great googly moogly!” on us...and I would not put it past them to have trolled us all...but I’d so hate that kind of ending.
Just….seriously?
The only reason I see people ship HW x Fern is because of their plant designs…and that is pretty much it. No one ever points out any other sort of real chemistry, like how a relationship between HW x Fern would benefit either character. I mean, can they hold a real conversation? Is there anything else that could attract them other than Fern being a plant? Are we certain that Fern would want a relationship with a plant mage and not, say, a water nymph or someone else like Breezy? Does Fern want a relationship?
Like, no one seems to think about these two characters beyond their physical appeal together, none that I have seen…and that’s rage inducing for me as a character fan. Essentially, Fern is just a grass Finn for people....and that is so, so, so much of an injustice to his character, especially since Fern is not Finn...as he, himself, has stated.
I have heard things like them both being “violent” or “having the same eyes”….or “being plants”…or “Fern being the Grass arm that played the flute for her”, and I’m like “Wha..... Last time I checked, HW liked Finn for Finn and not just his Flute playing; is that not what she said at the end of ‘Flute Spell’?”
I mean, I get it. Fern looks like Finn and is made of grass. HW would like that right....but......why exactly since Fern isn’t Finn, and she’s not just physically attracted to him? As for the grass arm thing, I honestly feel that while the Grass arm on Finn lead to he and HW meeting, it was a means to an end for her and ultimately not why she fell in love with him. I see people say “but it was the grass arm playing for her and not Finn”.
But no. That is a gross misinterpretation of Finn’s flute playing ability...or control over his own freaking arm for that matter.
It is not like Finn couldn’t control and influence the Grass arm when he had it; it was his…well…arm. Finn explicitly stated when his grass arm is leading and when he was in “Flute Spell”. When he first meet, HW, he told her “I let my grass hand do whatever it wants, which is sort of busy and shredy”, but in the end he states that “He” was playing for HW. That means regardless of the Grass arms magical properties, it was relaying his feelings for her and not the grass arm’s feelings.
These reasons I have read for HW x Fern seem far more obscure than say the background development of Finntress and its ship tease and subtleties. Fern x HW is, needless to say, does not have enough, if any, story for me to be on board with the ship.
I disagree about the violence and completely dislike the whole “they are both plant people” relationship angle as it’s based on a physical asthetic vs any actual, real chemistry. It is why I don’t like Fionna x Finn; it is just so cringe-worthy in that it is more visually appealing but superficially based on nothing else. I also don’t see HW as a plant girl. I see her as more of an omnivorous, humanoid mammal, an thus, closer to Finn in physiology. Yes, she has leaves and has a symbiotic relationship with the forest, but let’s not forget that she’s not presented as a plant but a being who can transform into one. While HW can turn into a tree and a log…and probably photosythesize…she also eats meat. She hunts for crying out loud (bears in fact). I’d dare to be generous and say that she might hunt her meat and photosynthesize for other nutrients, but that’s really, really stretching it. She is a wood nymph/dryad, and I consider them more mammalian. If she has mammary glands (and I sometimes see her drawn with), then she’s definitely not a plant person and, thus, a mammal. (I know that this is super nerdy, but her design tells me that she is made of “meat” and not a plant.... I cannot ignore this.)
Do not get me wrong in this rant.
I like Fern as a character.
However, I see Fern as more of a Finn-centric character in that he’s another aspect of Finn’s personal growth story, especially in how he’s being a wad right now. Will Fern get redemption? Probably. Will he and HW be a thing? I hope to high hell he is not. I mean, a time skip could cause anything to happen, but I would really want Fern to go off and find himself before hoping into a relationship. He and HW could probably learn to be allies but not romantic partners.
My bottom line is that I don’t see Fern x HW 100%. Hell, not even %20. I see Finn x HW more. Plus, I am more of a Fern x Breezy or Fern x Wildberry (this last one is more obscure and is mostly because if I had to pick a princess for Fern, I could see it possibly being her...though...I don’t really have a basis for this ship; I think that it just amuses me more than anything). Putting him with Finn’s love interests forces an unnecessary and trite love triangle we totally don’t need. It also continues that narrative of Fern or Finn being in each others shadows. We really don’t need that.
I could see Fern x Breezy because of the latters obsession with Finn’s flower in “Breezy” and because it would actually be interesting to see that flower in person; it just would have been fun to see. There’s also the potential Fern x Bandit Princess…which I would have found way more deadly and interesting in Fern’s character story.
END RANT
So yeah.
Bias tends to be bad for a fair and proper analysis; thus, I am waiting the storm out to see what rainbows and treasures await at the end.
Regardless of what happens, Adventure Time has been a gem in my life that I shall treasure. It has grown with us all in different ways, and that’s what is so cool about it. It has helped me in life as I continue to transition in my own adulthood. (I’ll be 30 this year. That’s cool…I guess. Can’t stay a kid forever even if we are all very big children on the inside).

As long as you’re here...
A fubblegum drabble request by TheOneAndOnly1993. Takes place after ‘The Music Hole’.
Word length: 1.6K approx.
“Hold up, did you say a singing hole in the ground?”
The sun had come and gone, and the battle of the bands had ended unceremoniously. The music judge, Finn, had left the scene early on for whatever reason, to the ire of the participants. Princess Bubblegum, who had orchestrated the whole thing, was actually more worried instead of upset, since this stunt was supposed to improve Finn’s mood. It was only when he returned with Jake and Lady Rainicorn were her worries put at ease, and she was hearing the whole story from Finn.
Although he claimed he was feeling better as a result, she couldn’t help but feel a little upset that she had nothing to do with it.
“Well, it wasn’t exactly singing,” chimed Jake, tuning his viola that he never got to use, “Or talking. Or makin’ any kinda noise.”
“But she was real and you saw her,” Finn defended, leering at the dog as he flew with Lady Rainicorn.
Lady Rainicorn spoke up, but Finn couldn’t understand her, to which Jake responded, “Yeah, I know.”
“Wait wait wait,” the princess interrupted with a stern gesture of her hands, “Did this hole have a feminine voice that only you could hear?”
Finn looked astonished as Jake and Lady exchanged looks, “Yeah,” said the boy.
“And was it the most beautiful song you had ever heard?” she continued to ask.
With a soft nod from the boy, the princess turned to the dog and Raincorn.
“Jake, Lady, would you excuse us for a second?” Bubblegum commanded, the two reacting in surprise, “I’d like to speak with Finn in private.”
The princess led Finn to the makeshift backroom, built out of some furniture and a black curtain. Although it was meant for the contestants to practice their performance in private, foresight be damned, there was no lamp to illuminate the area now that night had fallen. Fortunately, the princess carried a pocket lantern with her everywhere she went, and with the room lit up, the two took a seat on the sofa provided.
“So, you’ve been having a rough go at it lately, huh?” Princess Bubblegum asked.
Finn shied away, looking at the floor and twiddling his fingers, “I mean, I guess.”
“Finn, don’t give me that,” she prodded, putting a hand to his shoulder, “A lot has happened to you over this past year. And quite frankly, I’m surprised you didn’t hear Tripo Harmonia sooner.”
“Trippo who?” Finn looked up to her with a confused look.
“The music hole,” she looked into his eyes, “You heard the music hole.”
He never asked for a name, nor did she give him one, but Finn would forever remember that singing pit in the ground as the music hole.
“You...You know about it?” he asked, she confirmed with a nod, “How come you didn’t hear it today?”
“Same reason you never heard it until today,” she responded with a shrug, removing her hand, “Only the untainted youth and the traumatically depressed are ever known to hear one singing.”
Finn looked down in thought. If the princess knew about it so well, well enough that she knew what it sounded like, then maybe...
“So, you’ve heard it before then,” he asked, looking to her, “When did you hear the music hole singing?”
Princess Bubblegum looked away, not in shame, but in nostalgia. She held the look of sadness in her eyes, but she smiled faintly in fondness of the memories resurfacing.
“I only heard it three times in my entire life,” she said softly, eyes affixed to nothing, “Once, when I was a child. The other was when I lost my throne to the King of Ooo. And the other time was...” she snapped out of her trance and looked to Finn sheepishly, “Ah, well, you don’t need to know about that one. I think twice is good enough,” she finished with an embarrassed chuckle.
Although Finn was curious, he let it slide out of respect for her privacy.
“But enough about that,” she said hastily, focusing her gaze on him, “The point is, you’ve been hiding your problems from us. We’re your friends, Finn, and you should never have to deal with all this heavy stuff by yourself.”
He sheepishly looked away, scratching the back of his head, “I wasn’t...” he started, trailing off briefly, “I mean, I wasn’t trying to hide them.”
“Are you sure about that?” she asked, reminded of this so called ‘vault’ Jake had mentioned to her once.
“I...I dunno,” he followed up quickly with a response, “I don’t like wasting time worrying about things,” he said defensively, almost assertively, as if it were his final word on the matter.
Bubblegum kept a cool head, switching to a caring tone to assure him, “And that’s completely okay,” she responded, placing a friendly hand on his leg, “We all have our demons that we hide away, because we don’t want to worry our friends.”
Finn looked at her hand where it rested and then up to her as she was talking, “But sometimes it can be too much to handle, you know? We bottle these things up, not noticing the cracks because of the pressure of holding it all in. It adds up over time, and sooner or later, we break. Do you understand?”
Finn listened intently, following every word and comparing it to his own feelings, finding it to be an accurate summary of the past year. Billy’s death, his breakup with Flame Princess, his dad abandoning him, twice, losing an arm, betraying his sword, it all flashed through his mind as examples of containing the emotional backlash. She had pinpointed the source of his depression so accurately and thoroughly, he couldn’t help but ask, as he stared at her…
“Have you, have you been through this before?” he asked carefully.
She reeled back in surprise, stunned for a moment as he had seen through her words of wisdom. It took her a moment, but she recomposed herself with a curt cough.
“I mean, yeah, of course I have,” she answered with a cautious smile, “I told you I had heard Tripo Harmonia singing before.”
“Oh, right,” he looked away in embarrassment, “I guess we have been through a lot, huh?”
She patted him on the shoulder, “Of course, I’m really old so I have been through some nasty things,” her smile distracted from the scope of her words, but it fell as she gripped his shirt lightly, “But you, you’ve been through worse, way worse than any kid your age should.”
“I’m not a kid, princess,” he gently swatted her hand off with a smile, pep returning to his voice, “I’m sixteen, I ain’t got time to worry about those things.”
Bubblegum giggled, “Well, you’ve certainly grown up, I’ll give you that,” her smile fell as she put her hand on his back, “But still, I want you to promise me to be more open with your feelings.”
Before Finn could reply sarcastically, something like how all he feels is the need for adventure, the princess had scooted very close to him suddenly, her hands wrapped around his shoulders. The unexpected closeness accompanied by the familiar sweet smell of gum had him at a loss for words, but the princess had plenty to say.
“We still care about you, Finn,” she spoke into his hat, “I still care about you, no matter what happens. I still care when you get hurt, on the outside and on the inside.”
Her words resonated throughout their bodies, and Finn could only respond by hugging her back.
“I don’t ever wanna see you all messed up like this ever again, you hear me?” she sounded like she would start tearing up, Finn thought, but he said nothing as she continued, “I want to know, always, that you’re still alright. That you’re still my Finn the human, on the inside and out.”
Her grip tightened, her fingers clenched, she shuddered as it suddenly played the images of Finn disappearing from the world in her head. Though she could lose her kingdom, her life’s work, her own life, none of it compared to the haunting idea that she could lose him. The comfort that she would always have Finn by her side was one of the few things that kept her happy nowadays. Was it selfish? Was she denying repressed feelings? She wouldn’t know, she was always busy these days, but most importantly, she didn’t care. As long as Finn was here, healthy in body and in mind, she would find the answer soon enough.
“Of course I will, Bubblegum, Finn answered in the gap between their hug, “I promise I’ll be alright.”
The sincerity of his words put her at ease, a weight lifting from her heart. And yet, it made her squeeze harder than before, because it was all she could do to assure herself that things would be alright.
“…can you lighten up, though?” Finn strained a little to say, “You’re squeezing really hard.”
“Oh. Sorry,” she released her arms from him, only to find that he still held onto her figure.
He looked up at her from the embrace and uttered, “I didn’t say stop hugging.”
Princess Bubblegum giggled to herself, realizing that it was just like him to appreciate these hugs, and complied. She hugged him again, her arms gentle but her heart a hundred percent in it. It was just now that she realized that Finn hadn’t bathed in quite a while, his smell faint but foul. But curiously, she didn’t care, having heard the whole story from Jake his battle with depression, thinking to herself that this was a smell she could get used to.
Where had that thought come from, she asked herself, eyes opened in surprise.
“Alright, Finn, had enough?” she asked.
“Just a minute,” he responded quickly.
Bubblegum sighed. ‘I’ll give you all the time you need, Finn.’
‘As long as you’re here,’ they both thought, ‘I’ll be okay.’

mm for sure!! i agree that pb's muddled feelings were mainly due to how the writers handled things early on. i like the watsonian lens too that early at is coloured heavily by how finn sees the world, so we're seeing his interpretation where pb might reciprocate his feelings. and as the world opens up and we get other character's perspectives, it becomes clear that pb could only ever see him as some kid. i agree, i do love how hard a line 'too old' makes in the sand regarding fubblegum
Oh, and after reading this comment I can’t help but bring up the episode “Princess Cookie”!!!
Young Baby-snaps looks at the world through a very childish, idealised lens. PB visits the orphanage (which is in terrible condition by the way) and cheers up all the kids.
Tiny 5 year old Baby-snaps says “I want to be a princess, like you!” PB finds this absolutely adorable, and giggles.  Baby-snaps thinks she’s laughing at him, and is psychologically destroyed.
Even Jake points out that she probably didn’t mean to hurt him. But Jake sees the impact this had on Baby-snaps, and decides to protect him from getting locked in a dungeon forever.
The dramatic reaction Baby-snaps had to PB is almost IDENTICAL to the reactions Finn would have, especially at the moment Finn became heartbroken, when she pushed him off her lap for “acting weird”.
.......she treats him very differently by the time he rebounds on her later, because he’s older, he’d already yelled at her that one time, and it’s much weirder. it’s no longer an adorable crush.
