The only good thing that Frank Miller has ever done for the comic book industry is give us Matt Murdock hitting the Kingpin with the bisexual fap.

The older i get, the more i realise that Frank Miller did more to ruin Batman than save him.

Whenever I think on JKR, I think of Frank Miller. For me Miller is my JKR, I loved the Dark Knight Returns, a part of me still loves Batman Year One, Sin City is one of my favorite movies and Ronin is what Samurai Jack's entire premise is basically lifted from.
So much art I loved is either made or influenced by Frank Miller. But Frank is a piece of shit. He's a racist, misogynistic fascist and I should have stopped giving him even a dime of my money or attention for any project he breathed on. But I didn't, I did the whole death of the author thing. But as I went back, reexamined his old works I realized that degree of separation doesn't work for a guy who's still getting paid to write trash. So I stopped.
I didn't buy Dark Knight Returns III (or DKII for that matter), I didn't buy Superman Year One. I didn't read them either. People will say those works are bad, that Frank hasn't written anything good in decades now. That I could pirate them.
But why would I want to? So I can see him perform the literary equivalent of pissing all over himself while shouting islamaphobic slurs again? I leave that fuckers new shit to suffocate in a vacuum. Because he doesn't deserve my attention, he doesn't deserve my hate reading and I don't need his fascist manifestos bouncing in my brain.
The media we consume at a young age can define us. Can be tied to so many magical memories, but our magical memories shouldn't be put above the comfort and safety of the marginalized. It's not just dollars that platforms bigots, it's voices, it's brushing off the slave shit in Harry Potter or the fascist speech in The Dark Knight Returns so we can live in the magic again. But when it comes to material realities and lived experiences of people made the target by bigots, their comfort, safety and well being comes long before our nostalgia.

would you please elaborate on your comment "renowned hack frank miller" ? i haven't read much from him yet but i like to listen to informed people tell me why [thing] sucks because it's funnier than dc wiki
when someone tells me their favourite comic writer is frank miller my response is the same as when someone tells me their favourite films are american psycho and fight club — i immediately prepare for an irish exit from the convo.
both (some of) miller’s work and those films are influential pieces of art with explicit political ideology, but while american psycho and fight club are (frequently) misinterpreted satire, miller is genuine to the point of hilarity.
if u consume batman as a character in any capacity u cannot escape miller’s influence — batman: year one is the pretty definitive starting point for most fans (and filmmakers, like matt reeves with the batman 2022), and miller’s visual style is a cornerstone for modern comics. the dark knight returns effectively changed how comics were viewed by readers, and is credited with kickstarting the modern age of comic books. i cannot emphasise that even if u haven’t read a miller book u have certainly encountered someone else inspired by his work.
with that said — miller writes like how a racist libertarian who believes his own hype would write about superheroes. greta, u must be wondering, that seems like an awfully specific descriptor to assign to someone. and normally u would be right!
the because im batman schtick that every sixteen year old nolan stan with a twitter account ran into the ground circa 2014 started because of miller, and his success in the 80s led to a number of ill advised projects fueled by his own hype. all star batman and robin was an uncritical interpretation of bruce that embodies all the worst misinterpretations of dc characters, including the justice league, that miller then tried to espouse was satire. unfortunately, he is not smart enough to punch up instead of down — the absurd hypersexualisation of women doesn’t become satire just because you’re laughing at readers in the script, frank.
this, in turn, led to one of the most virulently racist comics ever published — 2011’s islamophic nightmare fuel holy terror. he should not be taken seriously as a creative force, and he should not be the foundation of what comics should be. at least alan moore is marginally less obnoxious and fully admits that the killing joke was a bad idea.

This post is something that can actually be so personal and no I am not done talking about it. There's a whole concept behind it and the fucking hair ties are just one way of channeling it but oh boy is it a good one. This works so well with the hair braiding too and i cannot think about it to much or i will spontaneously combust, but I had to so I hope you enjoy the result of it.
-
Joel has a hair tie on his wrist because Ellie forgets to take a spare and when the first one breaks or she loses it somehow, he can offer it to her before her hair becomes an annoyance.
He has one because she gives it to him sometimes when they're laying on the couch and her ponytail makes resting her head on a pillow or against his chest uncomfortable. At times she also takes it out simply because her scalp is especially sensitive that day and the constant pull becomes painful after a while. There's always another one in his jacket pocket, too, so when Ellie asks him for braids afterward or allows him to do her hair he isn't limited to simpler styles.
It starts with hair ties in Jackson but there are months of different acts preceding it.
Joel carried whatever he could for her, taking more than necessary sometimes because the slim line of her shoulders being weighed down by her backpack made his heart ache even when he couldn't admit it to himself back then, not at first at least. There are water bottles, sweatshirts she cannot quite fit into hers that day, all of their food, whatever first aid materials he can find, even a spare bar of soap.
Then he starts carrying hair ties once they get to Jackson and suddenly he needs to keep a brush on him, too, and with the brush comes a comb and with the comb comes a hat and with the hat comes a homemade creme he traded for since her hands are uncomfortably dry sometimes (she never said so but he knows her), and after that what started as a small piece of twisted fabric turns into him carry a bag around that is filled with everything his brain thinks Ellie might require at some point. Sure, maybe he is being a little bit overprotective and maybe Tommy jokes about getting him a purse several times, but he can offer her sunscreen and a bottle of water during summer, he gives her gloves and a scarf in winter when she doesn't remember to put them on before leaving, there's always one of her books in a side pocket, too, and as soon as he finds her a new one, her Walkman gets an especially safe place in his bag.
And yes, he fusses over her a little bit too much, maybe even to the point of being smothering sometimes (she always tells him to back off when that happens and he does without complaint), but Ellie grew up utterly alone and without someone to look after her for fourteen years, she deserves to know what it is like to be cared about by someone. Whatever she asks for, whatever she needs, he gives it to her even when she could walk home and come back with the thing in question in less than ten minutes. There's always a snack, a spare sweatshirt in case she gets cold, space for the one she takes off when she gets too warm, a small sketchbook and a pencil both as a distraction and so she can draw whenever she feels like it.
No one pays any attention to it, and while Tommy softly teases him about it from time to time, the smile that blooms on Ellie's face when he quietly gives her something she needs based on nothing but hardwired instincts before the words leave her mouth tells him everything he needs to know.
Joel might not be good with words, but he continues to carry a bag and hands her little pieces of his love time and time again, hoping she can put the puzzle together, hoping she knows.
Ellie does the same, hoping Joel notices it, hoping he knows what it means, that with every time she tells him to rest, every cup of coffee on his nightstand, every night spent in his bed when she wakes to the mere suggestion of a nightmare and brushes them away before they can settle so she can put herself in their place instead, every trashy action movie she borrows from the library for their weekly movie night, every handmade guitar pick she gifts him, every single gesture she does not have to do but does regardless because she wants to, she is saying I love you, too.
They notice, they care, they willing hand over carefully chosen parts of themselves and the puzzle they piece together is one and the same, because paying attention to things is how they show love and it is oh so easy when there is nothing to look at but each other.

I was fully prepared (and excited) for an asshole doomsday prepped conspiracy theorist and jokes about Ellie finding porno magazines but instead we got this absolutely gorgeous love story, where I was left with fucking tears in my eyes and a smile on my face by the end of the episode. I only recently came out as bi (pan, omni, queer) and I could only do that because I felt safe enough to do so. I cannot imagine what it was like for people even just 20 years ago, the thought that keeps popping into my head is, would Bill and Frank even take or get the chance to have this beautiful life together if it was not for a goddamn apocalypse? where no governments or other people could make comments or have any legal say on their relationship? Is that really what it would take for some folks to be comfortable with themselves? The end of the world? It’s just a bloody heartbreaking thought. I have even seen posts on insta where people are saying they’re not continuing with the show because of episode 3, all three games (part1, left behind and part 2) has a gay protagonist (Ellie), like if that didn’t bother you ten years ago when the game first came out then why is seeing two men happily together where you draw the line? I’m stressing myself out thinking about this shit 😫

It blows my mind sometimes remembering that Joji, the amazing artist who's made beautiful music such as Glimpse of Us, Slow Dancing in the Dark, Sanctuary, Run and several others is also the same guy who made the internet the insane place it is by giving us gems such as Ravioli, Ravioli in the Pocketoli, It's Time to Stop, You're Nothing but Trash and other iconic phrases and memes. This is also the same guy who wrote a whole ass book called Francis of the Filth which is a hella good story.
Like it's honestly absolutely insane.

the level of attention to detail in the last of us hbo is mind boggling. but as a person who has played the games, it’s not surprising. i didn’t see bill going like that or his and Frank’s story playing out that way and i’m so happy it did because it was so fucking beautiful -- and he deserved to be with the one he loved. but like the crazy thing is it was definitely done the day that tess, joel and ellie left the QZ.  the song he played on the radio ( “never let me down again” by depeche mode ) at the end of the first episode was so fitting to announce the end of their lives together. they were lucky enough to experience it with each other in the first place. fuck. i mean. look at this: I'm taking a ride with my best friend I hope he never lets me down again He knows where he's taking me Taking me where I want to be I'm taking a ride with my best friend We're flying high We're watching the world pass us by Never want to come down Never want to put my feet back down on the ground
COME ON! those lyrics say it all -- it’s not as sad as it needs to be because they chose this and they were so damn lucky to even find this pure, innocent, life changing love in the midst of the chaos of the world. craig and neil’s mind ya’ll! ugh. such a beautiful episode in the midst of so much sadness and terror. bittersweet but so, so, so hopeful. because love can still be found and treasured in the worst of circumstances; it always gives purpose.
