In all honesty when I heard about "terraforming Mars" I can only think of Elon Musk's grift, wasting billions on failed rockets on the promise to go to Mars and inhabit it as a solution for the impending climate crisis/overpopulation. When the climate crisis would be way easier and cheaper to solve, "let's just give up on Earth and go to another planet" is cartoon villain plan tier dumb unrealistic and morally bankrupt thing to say. As a general scientific endeavor it's cool though.

Well, see, this is the kind of mentality that bothers me, because terraforming, while a controversial project on feasibility and other ethical questions, existed LONG before Elon Musk and I had the thought, on my sci-fi space enthusiast bubble, that people were aware of that. Similarily with, you know, all of space exploration, that existed long before Elon Musk. When and why did we let him set the tone of space exploration?

And no, any proposal to "escape to another planet" is not to be taken seriously. This is another weird misconception about space exploration that seems deeply entrenched by, what I assume, is science fiction. Neither NASA or Roscosmos or ESA or the Chinese space agency has ever, ever, ever had as a plan to "escape Earth", and the idea of terraforming another planet to escape Earth is similarily nonsensical; advocates for terraforming (you might agree or not) want Mars to be a liveable counterpart to Earth, not an escape plan.

Except for Musk, maybe, but he's a fucking idiot. And even then, I'm not wholly convinced of the "billionarie escape plan". Lots of engineers and other smart people work at SpaceX, as well as many, many other places. They also are passionate about space, and most people who are passionate about space exploration see it as a complementary activity to us here in on Earth, not a escape. There are many reasons why SpaceX is a bad thing, especially their connection to the US military, but the whole "billionare escape plan" is more of a meme than reality.

I won't even get into the "FIX OUR PROBLEMS ON EARTH FIRST!11!1!!!1" because that's a whole rant on its own, but every time I read that stock phrase I get a headache.

Sorry if I sound a bit ruder than usual, but I'm really, really passionate about humanity in space, and to see arguments de cuarta such as this (not about YOU in particular anon, but lots of people I've interacted over the years) gets frustrating.

My proposal is that we refer to the wealth of billionaires in units of a million, so people better understand just how fucking rich billionaires are. Just saying 10 billion doesn’t sound like a lot but saying 10 thousand million does! A million dollars is enough to change the lives of billions of people (as in billions of people fall under the category of people whose lives would be changed by a million dollars). Elon Musk (ew) at his peak net worth had fucking 320 billion dollars in Nov 2021 according to Forbes. That is 320 thousand units of a million dollars. That is one third of 1 million squared. A trillion is one million squared. Elon Musk was worth a THIRD of that.

TL:DR : Fuck billionaires, fuck Elon Musk. Referring to x billion as x thousand million makes the number sound much bigger and we should refer to the net worths of billionaires in units of millions.

as someone who actually believes in space development and exploration as key to the future of mankind, this whole fiasco with Twitter shows why we shouldn't let Elon Musk, or any billionarie or capitalist in general, in charge of space exploration. The development of Starship by SpaceX, if it works, might revolutionize space exploration and finally open interplanetary expeditions... but if Musk wakes up on the wrong side of bed tomorrow and decides fuck it all, all the hard work by the engineers and workers of SpaceX will be wasted and that rocket will stay on Earth.

NASA isn't that much better, being tied to megacorporations deep in the military-industrial complex has delayed its own rockets like SLS... by the money spent on it, there should have been dozens of launches and there's only one. Russia's Roscosmos is in serious decline, it's a sad shadow of what used to be in Soviet times. China is doing very well, meanwhile, but still...

My point is that space exploration needs not only a national, but international coordination with a clear vision and an aim to improve the lives of people and the health of our planet (because for all the dumbasses who are like We MuST soLvE oUR PROblEmS HeRe FiRSt... what do you think climate observation satellites are for? telecommunications? earth observation satellites??), this will also improve cooperation between nations and allow technology to be shared among countries... we cannot depend on billionaries and corporations, space exploration must become an international effort, space is the shared destiny of mankind
