Justice for Raphael

I'm very new to Tumblr, I created an account here a few months ago after I discovered all the amazing Bg3-related art content that this place has to offer. Since then, I've never posted a single thing and barely left any comments, I'm not a very social person...but today I was scrolling my favorite bg3-related feed, when I stumbled upon a post of someone who received a rather rude ask from an anon whose sole purpose was to mock their works and insult their (possibly) favorite character Raphael, who was referred to by that anon as a "100% canon two pump chump bottom cringe clown". 

It is saddening to get yet another confirmation that some people out there aren't capable of respecting others' likes, not even in a fictional/virtual environment...but I guess that's to be expected. Besides the obvious, what made me decide to write this wall of text as my very first post is that Raphael happens to be my favorite too, the one and only fictional character I've ever felt invested in, and probably the reason why Bg3 will leave a life-long lasting impression on me.

So here I am, trying my best to point out some facts that (apparently) are easy to go amiss for some people out here:   First of all, there's nothing canon regarding what Haarlep says of Raphael, as a character's opinion about another isn't a fact to begin with. Especially if said character is (proved by facts) very unreliable as a source: him being an incubus whose standards are undoubtedly different from any mortals' and the fact that he hates Raphael are but the most obvious. Not to mention that "Speak with the dead" isn't 100% reliable either by D&D 5e rules ("the corpse is under no compulsion to offer a truthful answer if you are hostile to it or it recognizes you as an enemy"). Besides that, even if everything Haarlep says is to be considered true, the mocking words the players can say to Raphael before the fight are NOT, as Haarlep never gives such info to the player (he only responds with a "no" if asked about the matter). That line we can say before the fight is but the player's guess/ childish mockery, certainly it's not a fact.

From a purely objective perspective, the only info Haarlep gives to the player that isn't merely his opinion is Raphael's obvious selfishness and narcissism (the HoH is covered with images of him) and the fact that he likely only sleeps with himself (he has his incubus wearing his shape, even his name). By no means does that make Raphael a "cringe clown", nor would it even in the case where Haarlep spoke entirely the truth. Honestly, it never ceases to baffle me how some people can be so shortsighted and shallow. But perhaps those people are yet to grow up and come to learn that there can be much hidden beneath someone's (fictional or not) behavior. There's nothing to mock about the "Raphael only wants to sleep with himself and only loves himself" statement. 

How could it be otherwise? How, when the only person who ever loved Raphael, the only one he could trust and rely on since his birth, was himself? How could he crave someone's affection and so, be seen as weak? How could he care for another or their feelings when he never got that care or respect, to begin with? Despite his theatrics and his facade, Raphael was born Cambion, a half-breed never to be considered more than the lesser of the devils in the hierarchy of the Hells. Cambions cannot rank up, no matter their blood ties, yet Raphael managed to achieve all that he has...his palace, his many souls, and his power. None of that was gifted to him, he fought hard and earned every last bit of it with his claws, his wits, and his determination. I admire Raphael for that, for striving to become something greater than what he was supposed to be...something better than his father's "half-devil" son.

To reduce Raphael, who's most certainly one of the deepest and most complex characters we can encounter in the game, to a "100% canon two pump chump bottom cringe clown" is beyond low, very immature, and a rather shallow view, more so if it comes from someone who hasn't even had the guts to show their name...

Well, that's all. I doubt someone will make it this far, as I wrote a veeeeery long paragraph. But for once, I wanted to have my say ^^

So over the past few days I've seen people debate about removing their work off of Archive of Our Own due to a surge of negativity from a certain Ted Lasso confessions account.

Please don't remove your work. Please don't. I know I'm just one person asking you not to, but please don't give those assholes the satisfaction of winning and making you feel insecure about the works you put out there.

Creatives like you are the backbone of all fandoms. You keep them going and existing long after they finish, and the excitement has gone down. It doesn't matter if you are just starting out or if you've been writing for years. You are an important part of the fandom, and you bring so much joy and love to those who read your works and appreciate the time, energy, and imagination you put into it. You are going out of your way, putting your time and energy into it, learning a skill, because learning how to write and do it well is a skill. So, even if it's a hobby or something you want to turn into a career, you keep working on it. Hone your skills and craft and be proud of what you've done.

Don't let anyone shame you for enjoying writing about the things you love. Don't let anyone shame you, full stop. If you love something, then love it and don't be apologetic about it. Your enjoyment of something is more important than jackasses trying to spoil it. Because it's about you being happy, and you should not be stopped for being happy.

Creating something and putting it out there for other people to view is incredibly brave. It's not something that everyone can do, so the fact that you have, you have my respect. So please, don't delete your fanfics from AO3 or Tumblr or anywhere else because of the asshats on some shitty confessions account. You have so much more to offer in the fandom than people who like to spew bullshit like that and hide behind anonymous posts.

I hate when amazing creators leave or delete their stuff just because they get hate or get insecure about their content for other similiar reasons

I mean I get it's a lot for them

and obv I'm not mad at them it's their decisions and all

it's more that I hate the whole situation

some dumbass comments that their stuff is cringe or something that gets to them despite the fact they most likely are either jelous they can't do even half as good or just have too much free time and when it's too much they just leave it

and then people that made them do it get nothing as a punishment

I'm not saying they should get harrassed back or something because they either want attention (even bad one) or just don't care abt it

but still

there is so much deleted content and accounts that it just hurts to look at despite bringing so many good memories with them

like idk Pole-Bear because people were taking her art and claiming as theirs all that's left are refs of animatronics as humans, nightguards and some drawings

or entire Nexisunalist's tiktok with dca royal and military aus (and regular one ofc) all that's left is literally one post on their twitter with few drawings of Sun and Moon from almost two years ago I'm glad I saved that one animatic with Moon singing but I'm so pissed I didn't save more cuz they made amazing stuff and now it's gone when I checked it they replied to someone "it was something to be put on a cringe compilation" like bro you're blind or what that stuff is amazing!

or my friend few years ago that wanted to write a Tom Lucitor x reader fanfic and suddenly she changed her mind seemingly for no reason and didn't post it despite my reassurance that it was great (I was serious stuff she wrote was amazing) even though really short (only a bit over one page) but it was only for a test bc she wanted to know what i think about her writing style)

next time you see a hater either ignore them or tell them to draw the same thing better

if they don't they and probably can't and aren't worth your time

if they do then it means they didn't die during it so they absolutely can survive looking at you "cringe" art and also aren't worth it

if it's too much for you block them, take a break from looking at the comments or look only at the ones that praise you or give you genuine constructive criticism

if it's not too much then just please just ignore them or laugh at them

they aren't worth deleting your art, wasting your hard work and heart you put in it

why can't people just leave each other aloneand let them create and enjoy the stuff they like

so much amazing content wasted and lost
