ok i feel like i need to make some sort of post about this because if i don’t i’m going to start eating my walls

billy hargrove is a racist

no matter what way you try to spin it, defend it, or tell his story, he’s a blatant racist. and the reason i know this is because i’m black and i watched the show. and frankly, i’m tired of seeing posts about how hot he is and how misunderstood he was when he sacrificed himself and how he was just an angsty teenager who didn’t know how to express himself after he lost his mom

billy tormented max to the point where she was terrified to be in the same close vicinity to him. both dustin and lucas were pursuing max, but who was the one that got threatened? who was the one billy told max to stay away from? who was the one that was called “the type of person you shouldn’t associate yourself with”? the black boy. lucas sinclair.

lucas was a 13 year old boy. billy was 17 or 18. if dacre had let the original script go through, lucas would have been clearly hate crimed. he would have been called racial slurs by billy, he would have been putting his hands on him. but a part of me thinks that even if that happened, so many of y’all would still be all over billy’s dick

he didn’t make up for anything when he sacrificed himself to save the others and that’s the issue with characters like him. they do nothing but horrible things, sometimes unforgivable shit, but they die for the greater good and that makes up for everything? i don’t fucking think so…

this is why it’s so funny to me when people have been saying eddie is a knock-off billy because how exactly is he a knock-off? eddie doesn’t terrify his friends. eddie doesn’t target black people. eddie didn’t put a broken bottle to steve’s throat just because he could, but because he needed to defend himself. he didn’t attack steve for fucking fun

and so many non white people have been telling white people this from day one, that hargrove is a racist abuser. but you don’t listen to us because you don’t care about us. you don’t actually give a shit about us, do you? and those same people will scream about standing with black people and listen to their stories, but when push comes to shove as long as the racism is with a fictional character, well who gives a shit? the racism within the stranger things fandom is so telling because no matter how many posts black people make, no matter how many posts i make, there will be people in my reblogs and my comments calling me a billy anti because i continue to spread the information that he’s a racist bigot

I find it ironic that people love to talk about Billy Hargrove having internalized homophobia despite the fact that homophobic Billy is only a fanon trait, meanwhile Steve Harrington used queer as an insult against Jonathan Byers and yet folks wanna act like he's the most ally to ever ally (or even pretend he was never homophobic to begin with) just because he wasn't still a dick to Robin when she came out to him.

Y'all can have whatever headcanons you want, but the canon truth is that between Billy and Steve, only one of them got a homophobic insult slung at them but never slung it back, and it wasn't Steve.

been thinking a lot about those hcs about steve bullying eddie and i'm pretty sure the math just does not check out on any level

like okay so first of all, steve absolutely would not be bullying someone older than him in his freshman and sophomore years, especially because in the way puberty hits teen boys, there is no way eddie wasn't probably taller and bigger than him in those years.

and like, yeah, he was more of an asshole in his junior year, but he was only a junior for four months before the demogorgon. so that means that everything you want steve to be responsible for vis a vis eddie's trauma has to be within that four months.

it's especially egregious when the only person we actually see steve bully is jonathan, who is a sophomore at the time. a sophomore who kicked steve's ass, btw. which probably means steve wasn't physically bullying seniors and escaping unscathed.

also it seems to be an equally popular trope that steve bullied gareth and gareth hates steve the most out of all eddie's friends, which is like... okay, gareth is, i think, a junior at the time of s4? which means he would have been a freshman in steve's junior year. which, yeah, sets him in steve's prime bullying demographic, but can i just remind everyone that steve wasn't even with that crowd for his entire first semester of junior year?

it seems incredibly unlikely that gareth got bullied by steve personally in fall '83 and then held on to that grudge for the rest of high school, especially after seeing firsthand steve's fall from popularity and then spending almost a whole year in school without him.

“I’m picking you up,” came the crackling voice from the walkie talkie on the nightstand. “Meet me at the spot in ten. Over.”

“No, you freakazoid,” Steve barely moved from his blanket cocoon, only reaching one arm out to press the button on the side. “I’m asleep.”

“Clearly not. I’m on my way, Shithead. Over and out.”

Steve rolled his eyes, and contemplated going back to sleep for all of five seconds before he sighed, and heaved himself to standing.

Curse Billy for stealing that walkie from Max, for suggesting they stay on their own channel, different than the ones the kids use. Curse Billy for his insomnia and his late night drives. Curse Billy for the way he keeps on hand on Steve’s thigh while they go and always stops at the nearest drive-thru to get Steve a milkshake and wolf down a double cheeseburger (because his dad slapped him and sent him to his room without dinner. Again.)

Steve trudged around the side of his house, crashing through the well-worn path through the sparse trees to the road on the other side.

They both agreed that Billy’s car shouldn’t be spotted outside of Steve’s house, even if they were publicly friends now.

The Camaro was rumbling up the street, and Steve could practically feel the road of the engine shake in his chest before he could even spot the headlights.

Doesn’t matter how many speeding tickets Officer Callahan gives him, Billy’s never gonna be a sensible driver.

He stops in front of Steve, and he grins as Steve joins him in the car, leaning over the center console and burying his left hand in thick, dark brown hair to kiss Steve in a way that steals the breath from his lungs.

“You owe me.”

“Yeah, yeah, Princess. I’ll get you a damn milkshake.”

The car lurched forward, and they flew down the service roads, flipping off the Leaving Hawkins sign as they went past, on their way to a different little town.

A different little slice of life.

Billy stumbles in after it’s already dark. Murray used to start complaining about daylight savings time a month before it hit and now that he’s an adult, he gets what his adopted kind of a father was talking about.

The apartment is glowing when he gets home, but he can’t quite manage a warm greeting when he gets through the door.

Steve makes a startled little sound when Billy wraps his arms around Steve’s waist and squeezes.

“Long day? How much did you sell?”

Billy buries his face in Farrah Fawcett scented curls and breathes in deeply.

“Twelve,” Billy muttered, “Or thirteen. Dunno.”

“It’s not even the end of November,” Steve chuckled, “What if the ones you sell die?”

“Then they can come back for another,” Billy mumbles. He’s tired of the pine smell that’s been seeping into his skin. He wants to smell the ocean, but to get there he needs to keep selling Christmas trees by the dozen. “Need you.”

Steve says softly, “Let’s go get tangled up, Tree Boy.”

The apartment isn’t very decorated, just a stop over until they make their California dreaming come true. They may put up a tree but quite frankly Billy’s starting to loathe the sight of them.

Steve tugs him to bed and wraps those long legs around him, happily filling the silence talking about his own mind-numbing day at the video store.

Steve lets Billy play with his hair and run his hands along his back until they’re just a soft puddle of happiness.

I've seen a lot of fics fixing Billy's home life and I've loved them all... Susan bettering herself and Neil getting arrested, Joyce taking Billy in as one of her own and being the mama bear he has always needed, Hopper adopting another child of abuse and protecting them both so fiercely that they help him grow from his own trauma too, I've even read rarer fics where Mrs Henderson or the Harringtons take him under their wing and help him be independent.

But where are the fics with Murray, crazy eccentric incredible karate fighting Murray, seeing the aftermath of this young boy fighting a monster with his bare fucking hands and surviving only to despair about the thought of finally being able to leave the hospital and go home? Where are the fics with Neil getting his ass handed to him and screamed at and frightened by a guy with crazy eyes and spit flying from his mouth with righteous fury? Where are the fics with Billy being seen and heard and protected and loved by a wonderful freak of a man that doesn't think twice about showing compassion and understanding and forgiveness and acceptance?

What I'm saying is, Murray Bauman may not be the first person you think of as parent material, but he'd certainly be a great one.
