one of the greatest strengths of spartacus: blood and sand writing-wise is how multi-dimensional all the characters feel and crixus is the best example of this imo... he's first introduced as this fierce, undefeated gladiator and a vicious schoolyard bully. then we get to know him a little more and learn that his formidable skills in the arena and the impressive masculine form he cuts make him vulnerable to the whims of the roman women who want to paw at or fuck him. and finally we see his tender, romantic heart and the deep love he holds for naevia. and he's all these things at once <3 love him

What are your queer headcanons for Spartacus characters? I'm curious 👀

Some of these are based on stuff in canon, others are just me thinkin' my thoughts. They're also for characters who aren't explicitly shown to be queer, such as Nasir, Agron, Saxa, Lucretia, and so on.

Spartacus is bi or pan. He was absolutely in love with Varro, and I think he also had a thing for Crixus and Nasir (Granted, I think everyone had a thing for Nasir and it's only because Agron made a move first that he didn't have half the camp vying for his affections.) The scene in Fugitvus where he and Aurelia are talking about what made them love Varro- "A lop-sided grin, eyes promising mischief."

"I fell to love the crooked bend of Varro's lips, long before the man himself."

"As did I."

Like, what about that doesn't scream being in love?

Also, fun fact, before Liam McIntyre took the role, Wentworth Miller was being considered for Spartacus, and I am going to daydream about that forfuckingever while sending Steven DeKnight mental messages to cast him in the new series that's supposed to be coming up.

Crixus is demi. He says that he's not interested in sex when he first joined the ludus, and it's only when he falls for Naevia that he's shown being attracted to anyone. And when Naevia finds herself sex repulsed, he's cool with their relationship not being physical. I know this isn't strictly an ace thing but I still love it.

Gannicus is one that I can't decide exactly. I firmly believe that he and Oenomaeus were in love with each other as much as they were with Melitta. The running theme throughout the show of characters talking of being reunited with their loves in the afterlife, then having Oenomaeus being there waiting patiently for Gannicus when he dies is amazing, I can't lie.

Lugo was one of the dozen or so men who probably would have enjoyed a bit of bed warming from Nasir. They're both so flirty with each other as time goes on. He strikes me as being 'Pretty women? Yeah! Pretty men? Yeah! Pretty individual who is neither man nor woman? Yeah! Lugo love all! Come to my tent, pretty person! Lugo will keep you warm!'

Caesar is.... Well, he's Caesar, so I'm genuinely surprised there weren't any scenes of him fucking his way through the rebellion.

I don't want praise or congratulations, I don't even know you, anon and you don't know me. I don't control the way that tumblr works. I have been on this site for nearly a decade and was asked repeatedly by anons for, like, two years to create master lists so they can easily peruse my posts and wouldn't have to keep sending me asks for links and then when I do create master lists and explain what's in the master lists, they aren't used.

Well I didn't really speak about Xena or the merits of any of the relationships, I don't even remember Xena that well, I was just trying to find a pairing that conveyed what I wanted without using the same ships that I always used so yeah, I used Ares and Xena because of the context. If I found gifs of Gabrielle and Xena that conveyed what I wanted, I would've used those gifs. That's why the context matters.

What is your personal top ten/ranking of Ancient Roman movies/TV shows? So, the major Ancient Roman audiovisual products seem to be Gladiator, I Claudius, HBO Rome, the Taylor Cleopatra movie, Spartacus and perhaps the (Wonderful!) Domina? There is also the Matheson Nero movie, the O'Toole Augustus, The Caesars series that were relessed not long before Claudius and some Shakespeare Caesar adaptations (I also like the Chaning Tatum Eagle movie, wonderful gay cinema if u ask me, though Jamie beats Chaning in hotness).

I have never watched the Eagle movie, can you believe? Horrible oversight from my part and one I should fix. But I did watch the other ones you mentioned, so I guess I can try a top 10, or rather, just 10 of my favorites, because hell how could I even rank works so different in terms of personal enjoyment, historical accuracy, overall quality etc? And how can I in good faith put Caligula (1979) along with oscar winner Gladiator? When Caligula is so much better than it...

Rome HBO was a turning point and it's very important to me, personally. I watched it for the first time in one of the worst years of my life and it just clicked, so it will always be special. And it's just great! Very well made, very distinctive in tone and look, with one of the best casts in anything ever. The writing sometimes stumbles, but when it's good it's one of the best.

Liz Taylor Cleopatra for reasons very similar to above. Just very important to me on a personal level. I also love big historical epics that are a thousand hours long and you can just lose yourself in them. The big settings, the gorgeous outfits, the drama. And the behind the scenes gossip from this one makes it better. Type of movie you watch and go "you can tell the leads were fucking" (best type).

Gladiator. Again, in terms of ridiculous, over the top, big historical epics that are a thousand hours long. It's gorgeous! And Commodus and Lucilla are two characters that are very dear to me, so I have to sneak it in here.

National Theatre 2018 production of Antony and Cleopatra with Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo. Because it's Sophie Okonedo as Shakespeare's Cleopatra.

Starz Spartacus. Maybe this one is begging for a rewatch? Because it's been some time. But I remember finding it entertaining and often poignant. Shows the horrors of slavery without being "gratuitous" (I do have a problem with the term but let's use it here). And the characters are just so good! Crixus and Naevia! Lucretia and Illithyia! I think it's the precursor to Black Sails in a lot of ways, if you have watched that.

I am going to mention Caligula 1979. It's good TO ME. If they don't release the new cut soon I'll kms.

Domina, of course. I have very fond memories of waiting for it and being super excited (never thought we would get a tv show about Livia!!) and it mostly lived up to the expectations. It's not perfect but it's funny and dramatic and it's just so nice to see all the Julio-Claudian kids... One thing I love about it is that while other tv shows very reasonably cut some historical figures to make things neater, Domina just has EVERYONE in it. And they all marry each other multiple times. So it's a lot of fun to point and go "look! it's livilla!".

I, Claudius... I have a love/hate relationship with it, I think the BBC 70s production value is cursed and the sexism is so wild it makes me laugh (and my tolerance is usually very high!) but the cast is just surreal (Derek Jacobi gives one of the best tv performances EVER in it) and like in Domina it's just nice to see everyone...

Julius Caesar 1953 because Jason Mason as Brutus and Deborah Kerr as Portia.

Will round this up with Imperium: Augustus and Imperium: Nero as a joint bullet point because I'm cheating :) if I'm honest the Nero one has the edge because I just love love love love their Agrippina and Nero, one of my favorite mother/son relationships in anything... But Peter O'Toole and Charlotte Rampling as Augustus and Livia? No I can't leave it out. And the Augustus/Julia relationship is almost as delicious as the Agrippina/Nero one. Also it's very gay! Augustus was very much in love with Agrippa in that one!

Honorable mentions to Cleopatra 1934, delicious pre-code stuff; the Timothy Dalton Antony and Cleopatra because Timothy Dalton is hot as Antony; IL PRIMO RE!!!!! If you haven't watched that, DO; Hannibal with Alexander Siddig which I didn't include because technically is a documentary; Royal Diaries - Cleopatra??? Because baby Cleopatra.....

Crixus the Undefeated Gaul is an overdramatic himbo without an ounce of chill in his beefy body and I don’t feel like I’m underselling him with that. The inside of his brain is just a picture of Naevia in that heart locket meme, and his response to literally almost ANY problem is to punch it.

and then the narrative which is he does a complete 180 for this woman, where he starts off the show like all I care about is being a gladiator, all I care about is being a champion, all I care about is bringing glory to the House of Batiatus, all I care about is dying in the arena, and fuck anyone who wants anything else

and then when she's taken away from him, he's like so I'm winning my freedom and/or killing everyone until I get her back.

with dialogue (delivered with conviction) like I-will-fight-the-literal-fucking-gods-for-you

earned by scenes, like the one that prompted this exchange where Agron fought a guy for literally just touching Nasir and within the context of the show, it's a big deal because they need him for their rebellion

which is further earned with scenes of them being clearly in love

or sls like I-will-burn-cities-and-start-a-rebellion-against-the-people-who-took-you-away-from-me

because I loved you so fucking much

to the point that another woman who is in love with me only joined my rebellion after she asked me to make love to her like I was making love to you so she could feel a bit of what it's like to be loved by me but I will never love anyone ever again.

So, yeah, you have the simmering passionate type of chemistry

With I-will-risk-being-shot-and-killed-just-to-have-you-in-my-arms type narratives

But it can also be something like Monica and Chandler, I actually find them to be incredibly passionate because they're passionate about being together, when they're sneaking around it's like they have to be together

and when Joey finds out, it's like he's no longer in the room

and when they are together, it's very cute and soft and adorable but there's still that passion, that intense feeling of wanting to be together as closely as they can be

And then of course there's what anons typically ask about in my inbox when discussing passion i.e. intensely sexual or sexually intense ships.

Thoughts on Spartacus S2E3 and S2E4 for Spartacus!anon - below the cut because I do go on.

S2E3, which I actually watched twice because I was in a melatonin haze the first time and missed...everything.

I know what they’re wearing isn’t modern underwear but my brain still says panties constantly.

Especially when they’re killing it in the cape/subligaria combo.

I’m really enjoying Ashur’s turn to the dark side.

People do not say, “Your will, my hands” enough. I’m bringin’ it back!

They recast Naevia, which was a surprise to me. Another thing that probably was easier to take with the regular TV air gap in 2011.

I really feel for Crixus in this episode. The actor is great and gives a very nuanced performance.

And he’s not Frank Grillo, which is another unhelpful, untrue thing my brain keeps trying to tell me.

Yessss two boys bound by deceit yessssss (and cheek-cupping you know I’m about that life).

Ilithyia appears to have sensible french tip nails this episode, which apparently was the style at the time?

I very much like the reveal that Ashur was the one who cared for Lucretia. I wondered how she survived a stab wound to the belly.

I love the blonde slave - Chadara?? And her teasing. She knows what’s up!

The transition between Nasir and Crixus talking and “AGRON!!!!” is perfection.

Agron, my beautiful, bolo tie-wearing, selfish but sensible dummy.

“Fucking Syrians” - Agron doesn’t even look mad, just disappointed.

I probably wouldn’t have worn an already-sheer garment to a dank, wet mine, but go off, Mira.

The whole mine sequence is really well done. Very tense with the cuts between the mine and arena.

Worst Character Death (if any): glaber’s death could’ve been better, considering.  but most of the deaths on this show are v good.  did not like how saxa died, did not like how naevia died. 

This made me so happy you have no idea Moment: naevia decapitating ashur and being like “it’s a fucking start” after he tells her that killing him won’t make her forget what he put her through

some thoughts upon completing Spartacus, in no particular order (all fault lies wholly at the feet of @onemuseleft, face what you have wrought):

much weaker than seasons 1 & 2, the writing felt very different, way more gratuitous bullshit. final seasons and final episodes almost never tell the story in a way that satisfies me, so it already had that going against it anyway, and boy did it live down to expectation in a lot of regards

would still die for Nasir

that child obsessed with Gannicus can fuck right off, though. she sucks, she is the fucking worst character of the series, seriously the most deadweight character i've ever seen and also she made me dislike Gannicus for leaving Saxa for her, this whole garbage subplot (an overly generous descriptor) was clearly designed by a man who fantasizes about being worshipped by a 16 year old i h a t e i t

i almost died in 3x08 in that emotional conversation between Nasir and Agron...

...and then 20 minutes later the show was determined to remind me it is a Bad Show with that god-awful cgi

literally all the shittiest characters of the series are in s3 taking away screen time from the mains we should have gotten more of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Cratus could have been interesting but was wasted on a different stupid jealousy subplot one was already too many aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

out of all the people in this series one couple got a happy ending and it was the gays aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
