the voyage home: a heist movie
Tumblr media
okay i was watching the one with the whales again (because it SLAPS) and i realized that it’s basically a heist movie?? i mean, it has the premise of a time travel movie, but it’s a heist movie about STEALING WHALES and bringing them to the FUTURE.
bonkers.
so i’ve been assigning the crew oceans eleven-type heist roles. i would draw them but alas, ‘tis not in my skillset. if anyone wants to draw this, i would love to see it.
Jim Kirk: The Face
Tumblr media
i mean, pretty self-explanatory, i think. kirk’s putting in the WORK to get those whales. he’d be better at it if spock didn’t keep calling him “admiral” and using colourful language improperly, but he’s not his husband’s boyfriend’s colleague’s keeper, is he?
Nyota Uhura: The Hacker
Tumblr media
good on comms, super fucking smart, definitely the brains behind the “break into the nuclear wessels” plan. she’s carrying that team. what’s the first thing that happened to chekhov when they got separated? he got arrested, then fell off a cliff. enough said there.  god, she’s so pretty.
Hikaru Sulu: The Driver
Tumblr media
i mean, the man gets to fly a helicopter! also, he’s in charge of yelling out what warp factor they’ve reached, so i think that counts.
Pavel Chekhov: The Thief
Tumblr media
listen, i didn’t say he was good at it. but he did help uhura with the nuclear wessels plan, and he was surprisingly cool under pressure, despite falling off a cliff during the ensuing chase.
Montgomery “Scotty” Scott: The Brains
Tumblr media
i can’t give this to anyone else. scotty made a whale tank! and figured out how to recrystallize dilithium using ‘80s tech! and he used a keyboard! fucking superb, you funky little engineer!
S’chn T’gai Spock: The Muscle
Tumblr media
i don’t know how to properly articulate my thoughts about this one, only that i know it in my heart to be true. spock swims with whales and nerve pinches a loud punk on the bus. yes, he does math, but the rest of the time he is exuding peak himbo behaviour. i love him.
Leonard “Bones” McCoy: The Conman/Master of Disguise
Tumblr media
this is very similar to the face, except mccoy’s better at it. look at those costumes! fabulous. he gets into character SO well here, and at the plexiglass factory. we STAN a competent king.

For the book ask
8 13 16 23 25 38 52 53 90 and 135 :)
8 a book you finished in one sitting
It wasn't the first time I read it so if that's how we're counting this isn't the right answer but:
The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis. Growing up my mum would read us Narnia and when I was old enough to read myself it was the first series I devoured so I have a very nostalgic glow about the whole thing. When I was somewhere in my mid-20s my parents asked me to house- and dog-sit for them when they went abroad for a week. Which was all well and good until I got the flu halfway through. I remember going into their library and finding The Horse and His Boy, mums favourite from all seven books, and then just laying in their bed reading it as I waited for my fever to go down, and with a blizzard howling outside the windows. I finished the book before I finished my coughing fits, but it was a very comforting night thanks to all the memories attached to the book.
13 your favorite romance novel
Oh god. So here's the thing, right? Here is The. Thing. I read a lot of books that Have romance in them - are they very good books? Yes. Are they romance novels? No. Do I read romance novels too? Yes. Do I like them as much as Stories? No.
But I guess if I had to pick one I like that has romance as the focus I enjoyed Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen when I read it in school. Even if I was more interested in the family dynamics than the romance. Sorry.
16 a book you’d recommend to your younger self
There are quite a few I think baby Geeky would have liked, but also many of them weren't out when I was the perfectly intended age so I don't know if it disqualifies them?
Silverthorn by Raymond E. Feist was a very good book I got in a gift-exchange with an online friend and I think I would have liked it just as much if I had read it in school as I did in my 20s. And back then I might have had the energy to get my hands on the whole rest of the series and not just one more book rip.
23 a book that is currently on your TBR
We do not speak of my to-be-read pile.
This is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone is the most recent buy to be added to it after I happened upon it earlier this summer. Trigun twitter tells me to go in blind though so I still have no idea what awaits me.
25 a book by your favourite author
Ok so I haven't actually had a favourite author since I was a preteen. Not because there aren't good authors out there, I just haven't been like Dedicated(TM) to reading all of their books like that. But the last time I had a favourite it was Eva Ibbotson because she had so many .. I want to use Finurlig but there's no proper translation for it .. clever in the tingly exciting way that makes you want to poke it? delightfully innocent yet clever stories and I just reveled in them as a child. Especially Not Just a Witch, the one where the two witch besties broke up because they both wore the same hat made of snakes to graduation, but then they came together to defeat the man who was two-timing them for capitalistic reasons.
38 your favourite series
I don't have favourites as such. Anymore. But I always have a blast reading The Parasol Protectorate Series by Gail Carriger, there is just something about a supernatural Victorian London with romance and queer rep that just tickles me. I love watching Alexia have tea with the most flamboyant vampire ever, admiring her werewolf husband´s behind, and hitting evil scientists with her umbrella. All while her ditzy bestie is trying to tell her all about the latest fashion in hats. Who wouldn't love to read about chaos like that?
52 a popular book/series that you love
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a brilliant trilogy and we are all correct for saying it.
The themes! The brutality! The way I was bawling on the bus and couldn't stop for hours after finishing Mockingjay? Fucking superb you funky little YA-book.
53 a popular book/series that you hate
Is it cheating to say Twilight here? ^^;
It really wasn't for me, sorry to anyone who hoped differently. I did finish it for research (fanwar) purposes though. That's a week I'll never get back.
90 the longest book you’ve read
So I said when I got this ask before that it was probably Gone with the Wind (418,053 words) or one of the A Song of Ice and Fire books and apparently A Storm of Swords (424,000 words) and A Dance with Dragons (422,000 words) would all look very promising for longest novel I've read. And they were all worth the pages they took.
135 recommend any book you like!
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, listen I know none of us tumblrinas actually miss anything that Neil puts out, and this was a big one at that. But it really was so good and scary and inventive and I had a really good time being creeped out by the coins showing up in peoples mouths over night.

This Month's Review...
Tumblr media
The Iliad: Homer
It's a great book, but I feel like I'll have to read it one more time because I was very busy this month and couldn't fully absorb its beauty?
The Iliad is a gripping war story involving both man and deity, which is already a great character list to begin with. I loved watching everyone die in great, gorey detail and I also enjoyed the drama atop Mount Olympus. Fuck Apollo though, all my homies hate Apollo. Patroclus and Achilles!!! Besties AND lovers, literally the best combination for ripping up my heart into a million pieces.
It's poetic (obviously since it's written in dactylic heptameter), but also violent, like most epic poetry, and I live for that.
Jude the Obscure: Hardy, Thomas
This book was so fucking good! I'm impressed with Hardy's work!!!
The human relationships in the story are imperfectly perfect for allowing the plot to advance? Like this is total genius? I cannot do this book justice, I'm so sorry :(
I went through all five stages of grief (and so did Sue and Jude) after the death of Little Time (Jude j.r.). Man really killed his siblings and left a little note saying that they were a burden. And this is the begining of the story's turning point. Sue returns to Philiston, Jude to Arabella, and everything seems okay again. Until Jude freezes to death while trying to get to Sue and Arabella doesn't give a shit.
Jude's life is a golden road, until it's not. He dreams of going to Chirstminster, but his myopia off-sets him to destruction and failure
The Age of Innocence: Wharton, Edith
Newland Archer, what the fuck. WHy is everyone in this book also miserable? At least they're rich, I don't even have money.
Archer is engaged to May Welland and all seems well until her cousin, Ellen, comes to New York out of her abusive marriage with Count Olenski. Bam, shenanigans ensue. Archer catches feelings for Ellen and plans to leave May, but May is pregnant???? And so Ellen leaves America???? And then like twenty years down the line Archer and his son visit Paris and learn that Ellen lives there and Archer's kid goes to visit her but Archer does not?????
Archer tests the world and norms he knows through Ellen, bringing a close to his "age of innocence". I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of New York high-society life and the happenings/turmoils of the Archers and all those that know them.
Notes from a Dead House: Dostoevsky, Fyodor
One of my top ten fr!!! I've already made a review for this book back in October, so you can take a look at it here.
I think it's nice to reread books, I personally read a book three times: one for writing style, once for plot, once for both writing style and plot haha
Greek Tragedy: Various
I love myself a good tragedy. I really liked Oedipus Rex, but Medea is absolute gold!!! I passed my exam with ease because i was super into this unit on tragedy/drama haha
I'm in awe at the genius of the tragedians, like fucking superb you funky little greek man!!!! I want what they have and I wish more tragedies were preserved so I can fangirl over them haha
Plays: Chekhov, Anton
I love Russian literature!!! I love Russian drama!!! I cannot stress the greatness of Chekhov and I feel guilty for not being able to do him justice like Hardy :(
There is something about the work of Chekhov that just draws one into the more simple aspects of Russian life. I love Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, but sometimes I don't feel like reading about the Napoleonic Era or whacking someone with the blunt side of an axe, I crave simplicity and humanity.
My favorite used to be The Seagull, but then I met Ivanov and my life changed FOREVER. For real that ending where Ivanov kills himself on his wedding day? Traumatizing. Also, I found it funny when Lyubov says "you big booby", childish I know-
Ah, I'm definitely going to be reading this again soon.
I know I haven't been reading a lot this month, but in my defense I was busy helping my last brain cell slay exams sooooo
I want to get more reading and re-reading done in May, so i'm always open to recommendations :)
Stay safe and I love you guys, thanks for all the love and support lately <3

Who's that? Its Scarlette! The elderly Ribombee buzzes over to Guzma, excitedly holding out a very small flower crown for him with one hand and a small, bright yellow pollen puff in the other!
Tumblr media
Okay. Okay, that’s actually cute. He isn’t the kind of guy who wears flower crowns, but, man. It’s the cutest little bug around who’s offering him that, do you really expect him to refuse it?

Listening To My Best Friend's Metal Playlist - Part 1
Nothing Else Matters: the vocalist is really good actually, tons of control. it sounds so pretty. I also just love the sound in general. carefully contained energy. chaotic yet chill. the gradual build up is amazing. it'd be a really fun song to sing & even more fun to play. it absolutely does not feel like it's 6.5 minutes, how (9.5/10)
Enter Sandman: oh I love this song. this one & Iron Man, I used to listen to them a lot when I was little. it's so fucking iconic. everything about it is simply. goodgoodgood. this guitar solo is incredible. this interlude thing works so well with the drums, it even maintains the energy?? despite being chill? you're right actually, metal music does improve bad brain hours (10/10 with nostalgia bonus points)
Master of Puppets: the way this one starts, just. fucking hell /pos. zero chill. yet tons of chill. so much control. my brain is already vibrating a bit, ik that doesn't make sense, it's just. a keyboard smash at the moment. I love the drums in this one. and the lead up into the chorus. oh wow it's chill now. why don't more songs do this, it sounds ethereal. all the different inflections of master are superb. they say it a lot & it doesn't get grating or repetitive. aaaaa the guitarist is doing things holy shit (10/10)
For Whom The Bell Tolls: the beats in this one are funky, it's quite cool. The allos are totally missing out, thinking sex is better than Metallica. this one doesn't feel particularly loud. it sounds lighter. the guitar's pretty. nice key. ooh the guitar is doing spooky things against the bell now, it sounds like a ghost (8/10)
Seek & Destroy: I really like the chorus, it's fun. and the guitar line fits the title, vibe wise. oh it sped up, funky. the guitar is doing very exciting things now. I like how upbeat it is. oh fuck that was a really good transition. you said once that we have to listen to this all in Nov & I'm holding you to that. should I be rating these? that'd be fun. I'll go back through & do that (7.5/10)
Fade To Black: they're Having a Moment in this one, it seems. it's quite vibey though, & like. the tone isn't super depressing, which is a bit strange, considering the lyrics very much are. he's correct, yesterday never existed, but the goodbye is unnecessary sir, tomorrow is still a thing. anyway it's very vibey, & the end is brilliant, very fun spiralling guitar noises (7/10)
Wherever I May Roam: oh I love this one too, the beginning is incredibly funky. the chorus is spectacular. but like. the guitar, all of the guitar. the vibes. very fun. I don't have a lot of thoughts about it, but it's quite fun (7/10)
Iron Man: lost my mind a bit hearing this song again for the first time in forever. it's so good. the, like. what's it called? motive or theme or something, there's a term for it. google says it's probably motif, but like, close enough. anyway I fucking love this song so much. all of it. still losing my mind. so so good. (10/10 for nostalgia)
Paranoid: the part about halfway through where the guitar sounds like an corkscrew spiral? incredible. it goes whewww & my brain goes aaaaa. this song's quite short, wow. it's very effective though. vibey fun times (7/10)
One: its 7 min runtime is compensating for Paranoid. I can't believe the lyrics don't start until 2 min in, the guitar sounds like lyrics. speaking of lyrics, they're incredibly superb. I think you had this song as your status the other day. oh god the part around 5 min is amazing. the chill is gone, which. valid of him. he's having emotions. fucking hell the drums. all of it actually. holy shit. from about 5.5 min on is just me saying holy shit over & over, with increased shock & awe. you really can't have absolutely any thoughts listening to this song (9.5/10)
