Night shooting.

It's been a while since I did a night shoot.

I headed out into Leeds with a pal last night, with the Fujifilm XE3 in hand, fitted with the Neewer 25mm 1.8 lens and had the Fujinon 23mm f2 in my bag.

The aim of the night was to travel light and get some fast, shoot and go images of the night in the city I live.

The Neewer is a recent purchase and I bought it purely for this kind of shoot. Where I can set the aperture and focus zone then just shoot and move on.

This isn't going to be a review of the Neewer lens, but I will say that I am pleased with it. It is super soft at wide open apertures and it did perform well in the low light, high contrast conditions.

It was an absolute bargain really at just £46 in the UK. It beggars belief really that Neewer can put something out like this for such a low price.

Anyway. The main advantage was the compact size of the lens and the ability to zone focus, which allowed me to concentrate on capturing what I was seeing in a split second with no messing about with the camera settings.

Starbursts.

I shot the Neewer at f/5.6 and created the Starbursts you see here (produced due to the diffraction of light around the aperture blades).

Neons❤️

So if you've not worked it out about me yet, I love 'Neon' lights. I'm not sure why I'm drawn to them like a moth to a flame but I've always been fascinated by them since I was a boy (back then they were all true Neon lights).

I love the contrast and the light they cast onto nearby subjects. I was hoping to catch someone stood directly under one of the lights on their mobile phone or something but no such luck befell be on this evening.

The nearest I got was this shot of the guy lighting up his cigarette.

Fujinon 23mm f/2

I switched out to the Fujinon lens about half way through the shoot.

It is my favourite lens of any camera system I use or have ever used. The AF speed, the colours it renders and the sharpness are incredible. The following shots are taken with it and these were at around ISO 4000.

I did shoot a few more with it, but I've reached the 10 image limit for the post now.

There's a great feeling of freedom from the shackles of perfectionism shooting with a lens like the Neewer. It's not going to give you the sharpest, most amazing images you'll ever see. And of course it's not going to match the outstanding performance of the Fujinon XF lenses. But what it does give is simplicity and when you know how to get the best from the zone focusing, speed. Being able to set your focus and aperture and just then concentrate on being present and switched on to your environment is truly liberating. You see things you might otherwise miss. And for myself at least, I find it mentally liberating and very therapeutic.

If you're thinking about having a go at this style of photography, my advice is not to overthink it. Just get yourself into your nearest city with your camera in hand and shoot. You don't have to return with a masterpiece. Just the act of being out there and immersing yourself in the environment and seeing is great in itself.
