🌕 Happy Sturgeon Moon 🌕

The full Moon of August is the "Sturgeon Moon", named so for the large number of freshwater fish that appear during this month. Specifically referring to sturgeon, a giant fish often referred to as a "living fossil" as it belongs to an endangered family of fish that has been around for more than 135 million years.

The August 2023 Moon is also a SUPERMOON, a full Moon appearing larger than usual, because it is actually physically a bit closer to Earth.

This is one of 13 pieces I created for my FULL MOON series, that explores different names of full moons of each month. You can now check them all out on my ETSY as individual 5" x 7" or 8" x 12" prints. Each comes signed on front and has information on the back explaining the meaning behind the artwork.

Nonbinary Moon - This is a redo of “Nonbinary Night”, a painting I did back in June. I feel like the redo really shows my progress as an artist in a fun way.

My original art made in Procreate, please don’t repost without credit. Here’s the earlier version:

In the first the moon is bright against a dark sky, only with subtle pinpricks of yellow stars of different sizes around it. It reflects light down on the ocean below, illuminating a streak of yellow and white and also bringing out soft, dark purples in the mostly black sea bellow. The second painting is a full moon in a sky full of many stars almost as big as the full moon itself, reflecting down on an almost solidly purple ocean below an exact reflection of itself. The first painting is the one I did later, and is much more realistic, giving the sense of a much larger and more real world white the other seem like an oddly abstract painting.
