@lynne-monstr tagged me for this fic challenge--thanks old friend! This was a fun one :) It just so happens I now have enough spn fic under my belt to complete this with all spn fic, so here goes, in reverse chronological order:

1. Plano: Some Town Halfway In Between (7.5k, unrated, John/Dean, 2022)

That was a relatively new feeling. Wanting to keep things from Dean and just to myself. Like how I planned to try out for the soccer team at whatever school we’d be in next spring, or how I thought the whole Kurt Cobain thing was sad and all but I really didn’t get what the big deal was about his music, or that my favorite color had changed from purple to green. That I’d seen the nudie mag he kept at the bottom of his duffel. The secrets made me feel—in control, or something, but a little sad at the same time. There was a gap between me and my brother where there didn’t used to be one, and day to day I couldn’t make up my mind whether I wanted to reach across and close it or dig it wider.

2. Road Risk (1.5k, E, Sam/Dean, 2022)

That was nearly seven years ago. Nothing more happened between them after that, not for a long time, not till six months ago on Mom's birthday when Dean had his—crisis, he calls it. Psychotic break, the family says behind his back.

Dean gnaws the inside of his cheek. Sam isn't hitting the good spot. Dean wonders if that's on purpose.

3. Closing Night (1.9k, E, Sam/Dean, 2022)

Sam's heart races. That's more like it. He holds Dean's gaze like it's a lifeline. Dad's always warning him about the evil around every corner, and Sam's seen enough of his father's and brother's fresh spilled blood to believe him. But it's not what's out there that scares him. It's the darkness right here with him that he feels a breath away from drowning in. The huge empty of his dead-end life. Most days it feels like Dean's the only thing stopping him from slipping under.

4. With A Bit Of Spit And Luck (7.4k, E, Sam/Dean, 2022)

He swallows again. "She… liked it?" He doesn't know why he asks. He just wants Dean to keep talking.

Suddenly Dean's mouth is at his ear, breath rolling over Sam's skin hot as steam off an engine. "She fucking loved it, Sammy."

5. Understand the Undernetting (17k, M, Gen, 2022)

"Is it—is it always a guy and a girl?" Sam says in a rush, as if he had to psych himself up for it.

Dean frowns in confusion. "Yeah, of course."

Then his brain scratches like a record. His whole body flushes with heat from his ears to his toes. "Uh, unless—" But no. Sam doesn't mean that. No way. Why would Sam ask about that?

6. December, Sutter County (4k, M, Gen, 2022)

What the hell would he do if he did get to the buttes anyway? What does it matter what he and Baby see of the world if no one ever knows they were there? If there's no one to say, See those mounds there? Those are the lava domes, or, That's the debris apron created by the pyroclastic flow, or just, Look, Dean, and point to the patchwork below where a flooded field blazes bronze in the evening sun. Maybe some people can appreciate that sort of thing solo but Dean isn't gonna go out of his way for it.

7. Baton Rouge (7.5k, E, Sam/Dean, 2021)

It’s dim inside, little light offered by the window. At least the room is set back from the lot, somewhat protected by the overhang of the walkway. Sam’s already getting out of his wet things, back turned to Dean. His skin glows ghostly pale, like he’s his own source of light. Dean watches the confident movement of muscle under his skin, then tears his eyes away.

He grabs a pair of boxers from his duffle. He’s unsettled. Maybe the jerky he ate in the car isn’t sitting right. Or maybe it’s just the bruising getting to him. “Gonna get cleaned up,” he says by way of excuse to escape to the bathroom. He doesn’t want Sam to see when he examines the damage to his side.

8. Some Starless Night (Love May Come an’ Tap You on the Shoulder) (9.1k, M, Sam/Dean, 2021)

Dean's insides twist. "Why didn't you tell me? Did you think I'd be—I dunno…"

What? Against it? Disgusted?

Dean's not sure what he's feeling, but it's not disgust. There's a flush rising up his chest. He feels too hot in his flannel. Maybe it's anger. Because something here feels wrong. And it's not that Sam apparently slept with a dude. It's that it happened—what, fifteen years ago? And Dean never knew.

9. Is It Tomorrow (Or Just the End of Time) (8k, E, Sam/Dean, 2021)

He bites his lip at the sucking heat of it, keeps silent as the grave. Sam is quiet too, the way he is when Dean sews him up after a nasty hunt, twitching with the effort of it. Images of gaping flesh, all the wounds Dean has closed on Sam's body, flash through his mind. And here he is prying him back open.

10. Time to Look at One Another (2k, G, Gen, 2021)

Dean scuffs his shoe on the sidewalk, sends a piece of gravel skidding into the road. His hands are shoved deep in his pockets.

"That what George is supposed to do? Just, move on? I mean, what's the point? He gives up everything for her, and then she just—dies."

Sam pushes back the familiar horror show in his head. Locks it away. He shrugs. "She's dead, Dean. There's nothing he can do."

They walk in silence, and Sam thinks the conversation is over. They round a corner and the house comes into sight.

Then Dean says, in a quiet mumble Sam's not sure he's meant to hear, "But he loved her so much."

3 Up, 3 Down

It was a 3 gig weekend for me and I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little beat on this rainy Monday! But I'm in the office and bolstered by the release of a new Bastards of Soul single and video, "It's Gonna Be Alright". Though it is a tad bittersweet, it's also a reminder of just how great it was to be a small part of the whole process. The tune was recorded live with all musicians together at the Echo Lab and I think it turned out pretty well. Be sure to watch the very end of the video and listen for Chadwick Murray's inimitable laugh. xo

On Friday I played a show at the Granada Theater in Dallas. I had never even been inside but had always heard great things. It's a very cool, slightly modern, slightly retro movie theater that's been turned into a pretty darn nice concert venue. I played with a few buds in a band called Man on the Moon, an R.E.M tribute show where they played the entire Document album. I was brought in to add some heat to "Fireplace", a very cool 12/8 sort of sea chantey of a tune. I decided to do my own thing rather than cop the album solo. It was a most enjoyable evening!

On Saturday evening the Captain and Camille family played a Heart Association fund-raiser at Legacy Hall in Plano. Though it wasn't our typical north Dallas show, it was a nice evening that went for a great cause. It was also a chance to hear a few other performers and to relax and "hang out" as a band which is always a treat. It was a bonus that it was an early night as we had an afternoon show the next day at Lee Harvey's.

My fearless and trusty side-kick, Lady Sax, and I had a mellow Sunday morning before heading down to the Cedars for our show. Lee Harvey's just needs to be experienced in person. There's not much I can write here to capture the eclectic crowd and hazy atmosphere that somehow makes 3 in the afternoon on a sunny day, feel the same as 2 AM in a smoky nightclub.

It turned out to be a great afternoon full of familiar faces and the feel-good vibe was palpable from beginning to end. We even went out on a limb and performed How Much I Feel by Ambrosia without any formal rehearsal. I thought it went well and I especially love the idea of playing new material for the first time in front of a live audience. It's incredibly exciting, actually.

Lady Sax was a real trooper through it all, tagging along and listening patiently as I played. I might have gotten through unscathed without her, but it was WAY more fun with her riding shotgun. I am one lucky boy to have Gracie on my side for this crazy life!

Week 11 - Social Class and Disability Identity Development

This week while reading, I felt conflicted about my own socioeconomic status. Before getting a full-time job in 2022, I had always seen myself as someone with a lower socioeconomic status. If a survey asked me to place myself on a ladder from 1-10, with 10 being the best off in society and 1 being the worst, I’d put a 4. My extended family is all extremely wealthy and they get upset when my sister and I say that we are not well-off because we are from Plano, Texas, which is an affluent city, and we lived in a two story house in a nice, safe suburb. What they don’t consider is that my dad was racking up debt while supporting himself, me, and my sister on a $30,000 salary.. Reading the textbook definition of low-income, I felt weird. It mentioned that many low-income students are first-generation students, and I’m not. Both of my parents went to college and obtained master’s degrees. My family just fell into difficult circumstances and my dad has no idea how to manage money, so we have a low family income. Talk about impostor syndrome, feeling like I shouldn’t feel like I’m poor when I went some nights without dinner.

As an adult with the ability to manage my own money, I’m doing fine, and I no longer feel like I am a low-income student, but I reflect on a lot of my college experience through the low-income lens. I read the MacInnis, et al. article about socioeconomic status and friendships, and it was interesting to me that they predicted that cross-group friendships would benefit those with lower socioeconomic statuses. In high school, I compared myself to all of my friends because my dad got me a car that cost $3000 cash while they got fancy new cars. There were luxury cars in my high school parking lot. (I drove a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, RIP Rusty). Going to a private university, many of my friends could pay out of pocket and received allowances from their parents. They got their first jobs in college for fun; I got my first one as soon as I could drive. Financial comparison was a huge theme throughout my college experience, and I frequently felt impostor syndrome when trying to fit in with my friends. Cross-group friendships are fun because then you can go use your friend’s pool or their parents’ lake house, but the daily toll of comparing yourself to them is incredibly difficult. 

The MacInnis article also talked about how some low-SES students lack knowledge of how to become involved with the university. Even if you have that knowledge, some opportunities are not on the table for people without money. I will never forget having to turn down an event put on by a club I was in because it cost $10 to rent roller skates and I didn’t have $10. My roommate was incredibly confused about how I didn’t have $10, which made me feel ridiculous and like an outsider. I also sent myself into a spiral because I had spent much of the money I’d saved for college on college things, and then got hit with textbooks and other required goods during the first week of class. My choir dress cost $80 and I remember breaking down because I didn’t have $80 to spend on it. I will never forget either of these instances; they’ve stuck with me since 2017. Despite financial aid and loans, the social activities of college are not always accessible for those with lower incomes.

Disclaimer! This isn’t (or maybe it is) really an analysis of Dwayne’s character.

It is a routine at this point. In the morning, he’ll behave in front of his parents. Or if he’s lucky enough, he’ll wake up to no one. Once he’s out of the house, he’ll be Dwayne to his friends. A happy-go-lucky guy, spontaneous, dramatic, a little stubborn— but a fun guy in general. Anyone would love to have him as a friend. He’s understanding, warm, and generous. Usually tangled up in all sorts of rumors because his ass is literally everywhere. He’s even in group chats he’s not even supposed to be part of. 

Starting with his relationship with Cath Villega, and the playboy narrative Blaine is pushing: 

✬ Panel 02, when Cath replied to Dwayne’s tweet (because he isn’t replying to her messages), Dexter and Santiago’s reactions were hinting that they are not supporting the two’s relationship. And yes, they obviously wouldn’t kasi Cath is two-timing the guy. How fucked it would be if they are doing the opposite?

✬ Panel 03, Dwayne is clearly ignoring Cath. His messages were dry, compared to how he acts with his friends. Two weeks is considered a long time (believe me), and yet he’s wondering why Cath is missing him when they just saw each other two weeks ago. That alone would make someone rethink. Is Dwayne really serious in the relationship or not? Dry texts, lied na may plano sila ng tropa even though they are just about to plan something so he could get out of the situation, and the fact that they are talking in Telegram (just kidding). That alone paints Dwayne in a bad light. 

Maybe it’s because of Cath’s popularity na rin, kaya nakaabot kay Blaine ‘yung sabi-sabing red flag si Dwayne. This is the sequence of events:

1. Dwayne and Cath announce they are dating.  

2. Cath fucks up in the middle of their relationship (special mention, the boy best friend) 

3. Dwayne somehow caught the two. 

4. He tells his friends, and after contemplating, he decides to act like he saw no shit and their relationship is completely healthy. 

5. The more it sinks in, the more he treats Cath coldly (I’d say this is the point where Dwayne is preparing himself for the worst. So it wouldn’t hurt that much when they actually break up— as what he told Austin). 

6. Cath wonders why, like an idiot. She tells this to her best friend, Mariel. Completely leaving out her mistake (made it look like Dwayne’s at fault).

7. And Mariel’s at HUMSS 2, so Blaine eventually got the gist of it. 

It ends with everyone thinking Dwayne is the bad guy in their relationship. Because minus the points 2, 3, and 4, it would only look like Dwayne just got bored in the relationship. And that’s what Cath did. She hid the fact that she had a make out session with her guy best friend— on a Friday afternoon, at the corner of Dwayne’s empty classroom where she probably thought no one could see them through the window. 

 

Dwayne had girlfriends before Cath and if you asked all of them one by one, you won’t hear a single negative thing about him kasi once he enters a relationship, oh boy, he will take you seriously. It’s just that his intentions are misunderstood because he’s friends with a lot of girls. Even though he caught Villega cheating, he never once violated the code of dating— if such thing exists.  Neither women nor getting even crossed his mind. That’s not who Dwayne is. He’s still Cath’s boyfriend regardless of what she did.

Technically speaking, those in the right state of mind would break up with their partner the moment they catch them cheating, right? But Dwayne was not, so he didn’t. He chose to be with her, even though she made him feel...

Insecure. 

Dwayne and his relationship with his brother is not new to one who holds the first born’s card. The way Dwayne is treating River is something first borns could probably relate to. Summing it all up in one sentence; Dwayne is a good friend, (and) but not a good brother. 

River’s willingness to fix his relationship with his brother has been shown numerous times in the story. And in all those cases, Dwayne paired it by shunning. If my memory is correct, the first time he accepted something from River was before his finals. When Austin helped with babysitting? Yeah, that iced coffee was the first one. River was obviously delighted.

It was the first time Dwayne actually accepted it wholeheartedly. When you buy something for someone, naandon ‘yung anticipation specially if you’re giving it to someone important. River buys pasalubongs for Dwayne every time he goes out. If not rejected, there’s always an unpleasant expression on Dwayne’s face when River’s handing (let’s say for example) the chicken floss bread to him. As though… it’s just forced. 

River already experienced his first heartbreak through Dwayne. 

I won’t go into details of what River felt (trust me pag inisa-isa ko siya, it’s angsty), you can put yourself in River’s shoes but it is not recommended. 

Dwayne and River are born together, opposites man personalities but they’re still each other’s other half. Dwayne’s a noisy extrovert, while River’s a calm and reserved introvert. Dwayne likes teas and coffees, while River’s more on smoothies and healthy drinks. Dwayne finds it hard to say ‘no’, but River can and will.

—Funny, because they actually embody each other’s differences when they are together. The extrovert and cheerful Dwayne becomes a silent guy when he’s in the same room with his brother. And River suddenly has 100 topics waiting to be discussed when he’s with Dwayne.

(Just how River still drinks the iced coffees Dwayne ignored, disregarding his preference for non-coffee drinks.)

Dwayne’s a bright guy, but somehow, when he’s with River… he goes into his shell. He avoids and avoids and avoids. Seeing River angers him, he just magically fuels him up for no specific reason. 

Having a twin could be a blessing and a curse. Blessing, if both of you guys are equally talented and loved by the parents. Curse, if you’re Dwayne and River. Curse, if your parents are constantly playing the comparison game and your parents prefer one over the other. 

River and Dwayne, respectively.

Twins are considered one. As much as Dwayne liked the idea of it, their parents— particularly their mother, reminded him otherwise. She reminds him that it comes with a price. If you are born with a counterpart, you have to owe up to it. Dwayne’s the oldest so he has to be better than River in all aspects. Dwayne is the oldest so he is expected to outshine his twin. He is expected to be as talented as River because they are the copy of each other. 

Isn’t it scary that Dwayne’s fate was determined by minutes?

Dwayne couldn’t do anything about it. He could pour his anger to his brother all he wants but that won’t do a thing. He knows very well that it isn’t River’s fault. 

He knows that but still… hurts him. How he avoids any physical contact with River, how he pretends not to know each other at school, how he refuses to eat with his brother in the cafeteria albeit seeing he’s alone, how he could only watch in a distance as he waits for River to get inside a tricycle safely, how Dwayne rejects all the stuff River buys for him but remembers to insert his leftover coins in River’s piggy bank because he knows he got the money from there—

He wants River close to him, close enough that he could barely see him with his eyes squinted. If that would mean he could hurt him a little less. 

Parang mas masakit kasi kay Dwayne kung mas malapit siya kay River. The differences are in front of his face. The more na nilalapit ni River sarili niya, mas nagiging masakit para kay Dwayne kasi at the end of this all, their mother is always sitting at the corner of her bed, eyes on Dwayne as she puts out a list why River is better than him. 

What’s the point of finding tranquility in River? Currents are also powerful even if the surface looks placid. Dwayne needs to be careful.. 

Or else River would be the cause of his suffocation. 

Going back to Dwayne’s personas— he honestly doesn’t know any shit about himself. His real self, at least— if it is said that he has three personas. (Which of them is the main one? That is what Dwayne doesn’t know.) One is born with all things unique and there’s always something that makes you— you. Dwayne would like to believe, but there’s nothing to describe him. No description can bring justice to the color of his canvas. 

He’s not a happy-go-lucky guy. Is that what other people see about him? If so, better scratch that off because that isn’t who Dwayne is.

 

Dwayne is always anxious. 

He’s not spontaneous. He’s quick to plan things inside his head.

Dwayne secretly takes control of the situation. 

He’s not that dramatic. Put him and a chucky doll in a room with his mother, Dwayne would, without a doubt, sit still as if the doll isn’t creeping the hell out of him. 

He specifically loathes it if he’s asked what kind of person he is. Or when people describe his personality as someone kind and generous— Dwayne laughs at that. 

He thinks it hypocrite that he’s so nice to everyone but his family. After all, it doesn’t end with just Dwayne ignoring River. No, it’s not just that. Dwayne is harsh when he’s with River. And it pierces directly in River’s heart. How is he, as an older brother, nicer to his friends than his family?

Dwayne is probably not who he is in front of his friends. Maybe... his real personality lies underneath his family. But whatever it is,

me being angry at random people on the internet on my tumblr again, but...

i once saw an american on twitter, a libertarian/conservative shitposter, who made fun of the fact that brics chose a brazilian (former president dilma) to be the president of their bank. he quoted some random fact about them using us dollars to pay for their debt trying to create a new currency for brics (which is unheard of in brazil btw, what’s actually going on is a planned new mercosur currency) and that it’s doomed to fail because a brazilian leads them.

i’m sure he meant that we have failed to attain hegemon status under capitalism like the us did or something. so we must be dumb. i considered actually replying to him that this wasn’t factually true (i didn’t because i know he’s a shitposter), that we have failed mostly due to the lack of a cohesive long term project our elite agrees for the country, rather than some inability in regards to individuals’ skills or that we’re collectively less capable than americans.

One more thing about why this series is that this is a British series, so it’s great to get used to the accent and to listen to different idioms.
