Big Time Rush Season 1, Episode 1: "Big Time Audition" PART 1

Well, here we go! I'm super excited to be revisiting this show after so many years. I was so deep in the fandom back when the show was on, but it feels like going into it with a blank slate at this point. I have no idea what the fandom is like anymore and also forgot so many of the episodes. Ugh, I wish I could remember what my BTR blog from like 2011 used to be called (and if it even still exists; I might have deleted it). It'd be so cool to take a look at it.

I'm gonna try to just jump right in here. A few things first: I'll be pausing the episodes perodically as I watch in order to write up my posts on here, so it'll be a very "real-time" depiction of my experience, lol. Posts will also always be put under a "read more" on account of length.

Y'all the smile on my face at just the beginning few seconds of the episode. It brings me right back to 2009, watching the premiere with my sister. And I love how there's really no time wasted in making it loud and clear what each of the boys' roles are in the group and what their personalities are like.

Kendall's first line is literally a little motivational pep talk. He's trying to motivate them to do something that's going to get them into trouble, but still...it's in character. (btw, I will absolutely be focusing in on Kendall's character development—and my criticisms of it—as I move through the series)

Anyway, continuing on down the line: Logan counters Kendall's words with math, thus promptly labeling him as The Nerd of the group. Carlos jumps at the chance to cause some chaos (very Carlos. he was my favorite, btw) and James is just not paying attention to any of it. He's just standing there preening.

James is another one who changes a good deal from this first episode, I think. I mean, if I'm remembering correctly, he stays sort of self-absorbed and concerned with his looks, but not quite to THIS degree.

Also, the guys all work well together and fit, but I can't help but wonder how this group came together. It's such an oddball mixture of extreme personalities that you'd be hard-pressed to find in real life. In fact, if it were real life, they probably wouldn't be able to tolerate each other at all, let alone be friends. But that's the beauty of the show.

They do all eventually help Carlos turn the sprinklers on.

Troublemakers. Oh! And I spy plaid on Kendall. He wears plaid in like every episode, doesn't he? I remember that being a thing.

Logan's hair looks very dark. Was it dyed for this episode? I don't remember it being that dark.

I'm only ONE MINUTE into this episode. Yikes; these are going to be long posts, aren't they?

Yes, Carlos gives James the helmet right before they get pummeled by the mob of angry girls! Kendall knows James has to protect his face! Just a little over a minute in, and we have a leader of the group firmly established.

I love him.

Meanwhile, the guys are nursing their injuries back at Kendall's house. It's so funny to me the way that Kendall seems to have the rest of them (mainly Carlos?) "trained" in a way? He tells Carlos to give James the helmet, and Carlos does do without hesitation. Then, when James starts dancing on the couch, all he has to do is say Carlos's name, and Carlos tackles James to the floor.

But when you've got a group of buddies like that, someone has to step up and take the reins, and that someone is Kendall Knight.

Look at these goofballs smiling as Carlos and James beat each other up.

Amazing. This show already kind of feels like a fun little time capsule.

I'd be remiss to not talk about this specific moment (when James and Carlos are throwing hands again) that I recall the fandom latching onto back in the day. As things start spiraling and glass starts flying, Logan simply calls Kendall's name, and Kendall immediately runs to Logan's side.

This is the point in which I probably start overanalyzing, but. Well, that's half the fun of this project, isn't it?

It speaks volumes about who Kendall is, what his role is in the group, and how the other three (especially Logan) look at him. Things are getting out of hand, and Logan is overwhelmed. So what does he do? Simply call for Kendall to take control and fix it. Because that's who Kendall is, right? He's Mr. Hold Everyone Together, Fix Everything All the Time, Carry the World on His Shoulders Guy.

I'll be delving more in that in future posts, I'm sure. Many thoughts.

Also, can we talk about how James and Carlos are just. Destroying Mrs. Knight's home?? Throwing things and about to hit each other with a lamp and a...whisk?? Is that what Carlos has? As a kid, I was like, "ahahaha, funny," but now I'm like, "I hope Mama Knight made those boys pay for every item they ever broke while in her house."

I was originally going to break this up into just 2 parts, but it's already pretty long, and I don't even know if anyone will read it, so I'm going to wrap it up right here for now. I'm sure once I get into the actual series, the posts will be shorter, but there's a lot of ground being laid in this episode, and I'm also still finding my footing on this blog.

in BTR I really love hiroi giving bocchi the whole "I was like you in high school and look how I turned out" pep talk, which is both genuinely sweet and meaningful and also one of bocchi's big fears

specifically I love that it's complicated like that. usually you get an aspirational mentor saying that, or it's played as a joke with someone the protagonist wouldn't want to turn into, but while hiroi is played as Funny Alcoholic and the moment's not not undercut, it's still very much both things at once

i KNOW what you're thinking: 'oh, another disgusting pedophile asshole out to ship two rando characters, while trying to justify the former dickhead (todd)' NOOOOO thats so not true okay im not shipping them it says found family. aND i am not justifying todd's pathetic actions in the movie. i agree. he is indeed a bitch. BUT this headcannon aims to give a lil bit more backstory on todd maybe? and possibly show how these two extreme side-characters in the movie could possibly compliment each other in the sweetest ways.

first, we both know the squire is a worthless shitbag. someone who just *could not* open his mouth LOUD enough, or even bother to apologise after the damage he caused to ballister's life. but at the core i think he's a funny, (single) guy. we see him trying on the armour for knights, hinting at how he could have either once been a knight, or wishes to be a knight. but the squire is giving the latter, dont you agree???

then we have todd. a piece of SHIT whom i hated since the beginning of time. but he's a knight -- the very thing the squire wants to be. however, todd's actions are stupid and embarrassing and HURTFUL enough to make anyone pissed off. in addition, he is also the reason why the squire ran out of time to tell ballister what the director had done. the squire sees todd being a bitch (running out of words to describe him, sorry), gets mad and confronts him.

they develop a father-son relationship (or uncle-nephew, whichever), and after nimona's heartbreaking passing, todd is eaten up by his guilt of hurting ballister, ambrosius and 'monsters' in general. because there's no other way around it -- todd is also human. he feels things. during this moment, the squire plays a large role in todd's life. he helps him understand his emotions, learn how to control his feelings (like DON'T BEAT PEOPLE UP JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE BTR THAN YOU BRO) and more of whatever todd's parents didn't teach him.

lastly, i know this seems like bull, but THINK about it. sit on it. let it marinate in your mind.

what's your favorite canon (and non canon!) ships from the show/tasw canon? least favorite?

SUCH A GOOD QUESTION AHH! thank you! - as per usual i have a very long answer and i don't really know ship names so bear with me and find it under the cut

from the show:

its so hard for me to put my feelings about this into words because i enjoy most ships coming out of the show both canon and noncanon but i wish there was more of a space for the canon relationships to be developed. like i love jo i think she's great but her only personality traits are acting and kendall's girlfriend, you know?

if i had to pick fav canon ships, i think logan and camille are so funny and despite a few bumps in their relationship they really are made for each other. something about the nerdy guy and his batshit girlfriend get me every single time across most pieces of media.

as for non canon ships... i have many favorites... james and kendall COME ON like. come on. you all know what i mean. come on. i'm not sure if carlos and stephanie counts as non canon but i thought the dance episode in the first season was super cute and i wish they kept her around to develop that relationship more. out of all four boys i think carlos is like. made of boyfriend material and it's shocking to me they play him up to be the most inexperienced romance wise. maybe it's because my himbo opinions lean more into the predominant thought process of this decade than the last but. i love carlos and stephanie! i also remember the first time i watched the show, being a bit surprised they didn't have any relationships for mrs. knight after making a big deal about it in the first season. she and buddha bob had potential i think. can't explain it. james and jett also. hm. hear me out yall. they give catty gay couple on a reality tv show that everybody loves. if jett wasn't so busy trying to bag jo he'd see his perfect match was right there all along...

least favorite canon - james and lucy. i don't know if this is a popular opinion and i do believe that the two had potential if their story had been written differently. but james' borderline obsession with her was creepy and i don't think she'd stop her tour and fly all the way back to america to be with him. if there had been more time to develop their relationship... maybe. but how i interpret lucy's character tells me she wouldn't be all that into him and that her career is more important to her than some guy. and this is not because i love james diamond btw bc i love lucy stone far more! she's to good for all of the boys

least favorite non canon... i'm not sure. i haven't really seen anything that i didn't like while perusing the btr ao3 tag. are there any gustavo and kelly shippers? i'm not sure i'd be on board with that just because gustavo doesn't always treat her very well but otherwise i can't think of any at the moment

jokes aside, most of my opinions about ships from the show carry over into the story. i like logan and camille very, very much, i think jo and kendall are cute, i will bring stephanie back eventually once i plot my chapters better

i'm in big debate with myself over some relationship things that could happen in the future, so i don't want to spill and spoil. i feel like dr strange in endgame when he's looking through all the timelines to find the perfect one and i am struggling very, very hard to come to conclusions.

if james and roxy weren't together, i think she and lucy would have a pretty good shot at forming a romantic relationship. they have similar interests for one, i see them writing music together all the time and generally enjoying each other's company. punk rock gf and pop punk gf for the win! she and logan also probably, if camille weren't so madly in love with him

@selangkir wrote an amazing au of tasw in which big time rush was a girlband and james and roxy swapped duties! their characterization of james and dak zevon cut me to the core. they might be my favorite non canon even if they break my heart hehe

honestly the more i think about it the more i think roxy could be happy with everyone LMAO as long as she's in the ship its my favorite bc she's my special perfect girl :)

ahh! i'm so happy you were able to catch up on the story. i hope you're enjoying it as much as i am! i was going back through some of my old posts and realized roxy and camille had been fighting since like october i'm so happy they're back!

while it's not quite a sleepover this chapter, they do get to spend some quality time together talking about the upcoming holiday season! i'm almost done with the first section of the chapter and i'm planning on posting the preview soon. a proof of tasw life post if you will, so keep your eyes peeled for our girlies!

my speak now tv vault track/overall impressions are under the cut if anyone wants to read! wrote these right after listening for the first time :) they got long (a girl has a lot of feelings about speak now! who would've thought)

• electric touch!!!!!!! this is such a cute song omfg. i love the way she writes about love as fire so much (and i think it's interesting considering another common motif she uses is love as a religion...hm. anyway.) if i had to guess when this was written it would've been closer to the beginning of the process bc fearless taylor's sensibilities come through a lot. i can see why they cut it bc it's so similar to sparks fly in concept. i LOVE THE FOB FEATURE.

• when emma falls in love: "little miss sunshine always thinks it's gonna rain" & other incredible one liners!!!!!! OH MY GOD THE BRIDGE. I KNEW I WAS GOING TO LOVE THIS ONE. i understand why they cut this one bc it's not explicitly personal until the bridge and it is speak now after all. even though i think "when emma falls in love i'm learning" (or whatever it is) is a bit of a clumsy lyric, the sentiment is soooooooo dhsksjshdhjdbd. like of course she was looking to her friends and being envious of their relationships going well based on what she was experiencing. it's a beautiful companion piece to btr and little speak now honestly, and i think the themes of comparing yourself to other women on this album are super interesting and relatable.

• i can see you: OMFG DHSGSJDGSJHDKSHSKVDJD UP AGAINST A WALL WITH ME?????? I LOVE HER THIS IS SO FUNNY AND SO FUCKING GOOD WTF. obviously we all know why they cut this. the professional business vibe is so funny like girl why do u want a business man. unfortunately my brain went straight to emily poe bc the gaylor pathways run deep. where was this song 4 months ago. ANYWAY. i'm so glad she let this one bejeweled bc horny teenager music is kind of unmatched. i love her for this.

• castles crumbling: okay nothing new precursor!!! i have a feeling this will be a grower for me. the arrangement/production reminds me of an overly cheesy song that would play during the credits/climactic moment montage during a movie? idk. idk how i feel about it but it certainly is in line with the sound of the rest of the album (haunted, long live). i can't quite tell if she's writing about hypotheticals or if this is stuff she already experienced. the "power went to my head" is so interesting because like. bbygirl u were a kid of course it was going to do that. idk. i thought the second verse was stronger. i think the castles crumbling imagery as an explicit ending to the fairytale themes coming from fearless is a little too on the nose. least fave so far but could def grow on me.

• foolish one: this is SO CUTE. i love this one so much. i'm convinced that the last chorus at the end (her lower register sounds soooooo good there but we all knew that) was something she added retroactively. it feels like present her talking to younger her which is so sweet (but also 😵‍💫). an excellent more realistic thematic companion to little speak now i think. she's so good at these sweet upbeat countryish songs and i will happily take them every time. (edit: "you are not the exception" is a "the only exception" reference, no?)

• timeless: IT'S NOT A TAYLOR ALBUM WITHOUT AN OUR LOVE IS FATE SONG!!!!!! the historical fiction nerd in me is obsessed with this one. THE ROMEO AND JULIET/LOVE STORY CALLBACK IN THE SECOND VERSE??????? OKAY LITERARY GENIUS. the instrumentation is so lush and perfect and the subtle horns are soooooooo nice. it might be recency bias but i think this is my favorite one.

overall I thought it was really interesting to see which songs she cut and how two of them were seemingly because they were too "explicit" in some ways. let baby taylor be horny on main!!!!!!!!! it's really interesting to compare castles crumbling to long live and see how those fears about fame turning sour for her were already very present. it gives more context to the long live bridge imo. overall none of these have like recontextualized the album for me in the way the red vault did (or feel like they were touching on missing pieces of the story ig) but they definitely added some more color to certain themes. i am trying to not think about how i can see you could easily be about jm. overall i'm happy with the speak now album we got but i'm obvs also very glad to have these songs <3

so the artful dodger, where to start kfdjgkdfjgdkfjg so it's about charles dickens's prince of thieves dubbed dodger, jack dawkins, who in this continuation/adaptation was caught thieving by a naval surgeon who took him on as an apprentice (bc back then that's how u became a surgeon) so now he's a Super Good surgeon. like mans is crazy good at surgery. so he um, so he makes some mistakes (affectionate), gets blackmailed by lady belle fox (so iconic of her tbh) but she's wicked smart and a way better reader than he is (their chemistry from the get go is insane), his criminal adoptive dad fagin shows up (he's so funny and also <3), and jack is forced back to some of his past that he was trying to leave behind and is put in situations bc of this! it's on hulu rn, unsure if it will be on us disney+ but ik it'll be on like uk/australia disney+ in january!! I find it funny that she is saying what some fans (me) wish Taylor would say to her fans. Obviously Taylor does appreciate her fans and loves what we do for her but good lord fans are so entitled and think they deserve this and that and have say over how Taylor runs her life.

I wish this too, and I think she took some baby steps in this direction with telling people not to drag John Mayer over Dear John (TV). I also think that the BTR lyric change (while mostly about signaling growth and understanding of the situation and herself) is perhaps a tiny, tacit acknowledgement that the words might be used against the person they were about again, and she wanted to cut that off before it happened. So she gets her fans can be rabid in bad ways.

I don't think she'll ever call out anything explicitly, partly because she has sometimes indirectly/unintentionally fueled stuff and has always been vocal about how her fans are part of her team that anything she could say would probably just end up blowing up in unintentional ways. Also, crazy fans are going to crazy fan. Whenever Taylor does anything, they twist what she did to say it's a reflection of what they wanted, no matter what. Taylor is the only boss of Taylor and she's working on pleasing herself at the moment, but if people want to believe she's doing only what they want, there's not much she can do to change that.

one of the funniest things on television ever was logan from big time rush’s name actually being hortense. they kept it up for the whole show and it genuinely had me in tears every time. funniest thing on the television and i stand by that.

Friday evening, the volleyball team arrived at the town regionals were being held at, about an hour away. You were staying in a hotel again, and as before, Julia was your buddy.

After having spent the evening laughing and having fun, your whole hotel room group was about to head up the stairs.

“Hey, y/n. Do you mind staying back for a minute?” Julia asked.

“Oh, sure. We’ll meet you guys upstairs,” you called to the other two, who waved back nonchalantly and continued walking. Julia and you went back to some empty seats near the lobby.

“What’s up?” you asked, smiling.

“Well… Sam told me he caught you and Tom yesterday and I just wanted to ask you about it…”

Your smile faltered.

“What’s there to talk about? I told him that Tom sprayed me with water so I got back at him by soaking the back of his shirt. There’s nothing more to say.”

“Well, yeah, he told me that but he also mentioned that you stayed for dinner? And met Nikki’s parents last weekend? Not trying to imply anything, but I didn’t meet their grandparents until Sam and I had been dating for like 6 months.”

You were getting annoyed, considering this was the second person in two days to ask you about Tom.

“I didn’t just meet them over nothing! Nikki took my senior pictures at the same time as Tom’s and wanted to do them there. I was just tagging along for the ride.”

“You know he’s also coming to state next weekend, right? If we pass through tomorrow?”

He is?

“Uh, no I didn’t. Doesn’t he have football stuff to worry about? It’s also Halloween next weekend, like he’d miss out on the big party.”

“They have a bye next week. Sam is going to come and I guess Tom is taking him, but Nikki might come too? I’m not sure. I guess you’d better ask him. Anyways, I just wanted to clear things up since there were all those rumors today,” she said, starting to get up.

“Wait, wai- Rumors? I never heard anything. Like about me?”

“You haven’t heard? I guess one of the freshman girls who has a massive crush on Tom was stalking Nikki’s website last night and saw some pictures of the two of you. A bunch of people think you’re dating now.”

You felt yourself pale.

“Oh no, and she changed one picture after Tom asked her to. Do you know what the picture was?”

“Something about him carrying you..? I never saw it, why?”

“Great. Now everyone is going to think she changed it because a secret got out or something. Ughhhh I just wish this stupid marriage project had never happened and I would never be in this mess.”

Julia looked at you contemplatively for a moment.

“Think of it this way, you and Tom are friends now, right?” you apprehensively nodded. “If it weren’t for that project, you two would still be fighting all the time and you wouldn’t have had the incredible Nikki Holland taking your pictures. Everyone can just get over themselves, you know?”

You snorted, then grinned.

“Yeah I guess so. You know, you’re annoyingly wise beyond your years,” you stated. “Now let’s get back upstairs. We have a long day ahead of us.”

Placing first at regionals meant two things: you were going to state, and everyone was congratulating you again when Monday came.

They also kinda looked at you funny when Tom high fived you in the hallway as he passed by, but you had decided to follow Julia’s advice and stop caring about the rumors people were spreading. 

Once the morning announcements ended, your calculus teacher stood up, a small paper stack in hand.

“Okay, everyone, since I’m your first period teacher and homecoming is next week, today you get to cast your nomination votes. Y’all know the drill: three guys, three girls for king and queen. Try to make it fast, we have a lot to do today.”

She walked around handing out half-sheets of paper with six lines on them. You and Tom immediately looked at each other.

“We nominating each other?” Tom asked before you could.

“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” you joked, filling out the sheet with both of your names and four others.

In home ec, you sat next to Tom cutting fabric for yet another project you had to do together, thinking about something Julia had mentioned.

“Hey, I gotta ask you something. Is it true you’re going to the capital this weekend for our state tournament?” you asked.

“Oh, yeah. This is our bye week and I promised Sam I’d go with him and mom. Plus, we can work on the project when you’re free.”

“You do realize that’s like a four hour drive, right? I mean it’s Halloween this weekend. Wouldn’t you rather make an appearance at Johnny’s big blowout?”

“Eh, it won’t be that great. I mean his place isn’t even that big and it’s in town. There’s literally no way it won’t get busted within the first half hour. The homecoming party at Tyler’s however… that’s gonna be insane.”

“Okay Johnny’s trash party aside, you really would rather spend your one free weekend of the season four hours away watching girls play volleyball then at home doing… whatever it is you do. And please don’t tell me you watch the ‘hub in your spare time.”

“Come on, y/n I’m not an animal. Even without the tight uniforms volleyball is really cool.” 

You backhanded his arm at the comment.

“Plus, I don’t need any videos to get myself off,” he added, smirking.

“You disgust me.”

“You know you love me.”

“Hmm. Debatable,” you shot back dryly, earning a chuckle and shoulder bump from him as you finally cracked.

At lunch, your friends were discussing the Halloween party when you sat down.

“Okay we really need to figure out what to wear this weekend, and we’re not going as playboy bunnies like Daisy and all her group,” said one girl.

“Well I say we dress as frat boys. It’s funny, not super sexual, and we all know half the guys are going to rush next year,” suggested Caroline.

“I like it, but what if we went a step further and dressed as dads. You know, hawaiian shirts, khaki shorts, socks and sandals. That would be hilarious. What do you think, y/n?” said Alexis.

“Sorry ladies, I won’t be there. We have state this weekend at the capital so as always, we’re driving down Friday after school. I will be at Tyler’s homecoming thing next weekend. Also, I do really like the dad thing, but I vote y’all do Guy Fieri.”

“Wait why is that literally genius,” Alexis said as the others agreed. “Of course it would suck to take your idea without you even getting to do it.”

“You guys really think I care? Just credit me in your insta captions. I’ll make the team put ribbons with flames on them in their ponytails Saturday.”

“Okay now we have to do it,” a different friend said.

“Hey, at least you won’t have to worry about Tom. I’m sure he’ll be at the party,” Caroline said. You wrinkled your nose.

“Yeah about that… His brother’s girlfriend is on the team so he’s going, too. I’m the one that’ll be seeing him instead of you guys but whatever. We’ll need to work on our project anyways.”

“Don’t you think that’ll fuel the fires people are already spreading about you? A good portion of the school thinks you’re secretly together now,” added the first friend from before. 

“People are going to believe whatever the hell they want. I honestly don’t care anymore. Oh! By the way, did I tell you guys that some freshman was the one spreading shit about me Friday? The nerve those kids have,” you said.

“Wait, what? It was a freshman that was trying to tell everyone y’all are together? Ugh why would anyone believe them?” Alexis asked, incredulous.

“I know, right? Apparently she’s like obsessed with Tom or something. She must have a backwards way of thinking if she believes spreading fake rumors will make him want her. Jokes on her when she has to see us together on homecoming court. He’s just as likely to be voted as I am, maybe even more.”

The group all laughed and continued talking about random things, and you mentally wiped the sweat from your brow now that the conversation was shifted from you and Tom.

You were nervously bouncing your leg before calculus Friday morning. You’d gotten to school early to make certain you would be there for the announcements, which is when they would be releasing the list of nominees.

Tom came in a couple minutes before the bell, hair still wet from his post workout shower. Usually he blow dried it, and he obviously noticed you looking at his curls, your knee bouncing anxiously.

“Got out of the weight room late so I rushed over here. What are you wired up about, princess?”

“Do I really have to tell you? Homecoming noms.”

“You’re actually nervous about that? Everyone knows you’re already at the top of the list.”

“Uh, no, that’s you. After everything that’s happened the past few weeks, there’s no telling how people feel about me.”

“Oh you’ll be fine. I know it,” Tom finished. You wanted to disagree with him further, but then the bell rang and announcements began. After the general daily stuff, they got to the part everyone was waiting for. 

You were on the edge of your seat. The disembodied voice began with the underclassmen’s court nominations, eventually working up to the senior king contestants.

“Alright, first up in the running for kings we have… Tuwaine Barrett!”

Tuwaine was a cool dude. He played basketball and was in theatre. You were happy to see him nominated.

“Next up we’ve got Harrison Osterfield!”

Ugh. I’d rather abdicate the throne than end up against him.

“And finally for the boys, Tom Holland!”

A small cheer went up in your classroom as people congratulated Tom and patted him on the back. You gave him a high five.

“And now for the ladies. First on the list is Zendaya Coleman!”

Ah Zendaya. You were never that close, but she was always nice when you’d had classes with her. She was way taller than you, a star player on the basketball and softball teams. Not to mention she was insanely gorgeous. This was already some stiff competition.

“Second, we have Daisy Ridley!”

And of course another likely contender. Daisy, who was planning on going to that evening’s Halloween party as a playboy bunny, was a cheerleader. She didn’t fit every aspect of the cheer stereotype, like the fact that she was actually really smart, but she definitely wasn’t the nicest person either.

“And finally, your last nominee for homecoming queen is… y/n y/l/n!”

It took a second to fully process that it was you they were talking about until there were people cheering you on like they’d done for Tom. He reciprocated the high five.

“What’d I tell you princess? Or shall I say queen.”

Tom was leaving football practice after the bell when a few of his buddies appeared next to him to walk across the parking lot.

They were talking when Tom saw you all loading the bus, and you sent each other a wave.

“Damn, y/n’s not gonna be at the party tonight? That’s rough, she always has the dopest costumes. ‘Least you will. What are you going as?” one guy, Jake, said.

“Did I not tell you? I’m going out of town. Won’t be there. I totally would’ve been Spider-Man though,” Tom explained.

“Wait you won’t be there tonight either?” another, Chris, asked. “You’re gonna miss out on some major exposure for homecoming votes.”

“Oh yeah, right. I’m pretty sure things are in the bag for me. I’ll just be gone tonight and tomorrow. Promised Sam I’d go to the volleyball thing with him.”

“Wait, wait, wait. You. Are going to the capital. Which is four hours away. At the same time as y/n. Am I hearing this right?” Jake asked as they finally reached their cars.

“Oh shut up, man. It’s not like that. Yeah we’ll be at the same place this weekend but whatever. We’re cool with each other now.”

“Cool? Is that code for ‘I want to make out every time I look at her?’” interjected Chris. He and Jake gave each other a look and laughed.

“Ugh, no. I’d kiss a salmon before I kissed y/n. I just meant we’ve come to an understanding and are somewhat friends now.”

They both looked at him funny.

“So you mean to tell me that there’s nothing going on between you two? Yeah right. We’ve all seen the way you look at her at games,” Jake said suggestively.

“What is up with you and everyone else at this school thinking there’s more to the story?! We are fake married for a school project and are nothing more than friends. You’re crazy to think otherwise.”

“Who are you planning on asking to the dance?” Chris asked, seemingly out of nowhere.

“What? What do you mean? I haven’t even thought about it.”

“I’m asking who you’ll take to homecoming. It’s y/n, isn’t it?”

“No. No, it’s not, because I haven’t asked anyone.”

“Would you go with her?” Chris continued, pressing in.

“I mean I guess so. If we’re voted king and queen then it’ll basically be an obligation.”

“And if you’re not?”

“Dude why are you asking all these questions! If she isn’t queen then I’ll go with whoever is. If I’m not king, I’ll just go solo and see what happens. Whatever, though, I need to get home. I’ll see you guys Monday,” Tom finished.

He walked off to his car, where his brothers were impatiently waiting.

Big Time Rush Season 1, Episode 6: “Big Time Mansion”

Highlights: Gustavo shows a glimmer of trust in the boys, and they spend the next twenty minutes making horrible decision after horrible decision. Good thing they've got a mom who's willing to step in, no questions asked.

As we officially begin this episode (skipping over the underwater fart record nonsense) the guys are in the studio singing "Famous," which was one of my favorites back in the day. Every time I hear it, I still think of a blog post I'd come across that did a deep analysis of the song, explaining how each of the boys' individual parts align with their personalities in the show and even reveals their anxieties and fears in regards to fame. Interesting stuff. All these years later, I still think of that post when listening to "Famous."

The song sounds great, but Gustavo isn't willing to dish out any compliments. After all, he says, it isn't like the dogs are thanking him for anything. Two seconds later, the boys all file in to thank Gustavo for the opportunity he's giving them.

Kendall has gotten a haircut since the last episode.

Also, big shoutout to Logan's failed attempt to high-five Gustavo and Kendall's reaction to it.

Gustavo announces that he and Kelly are taking a trip to North Carolina and then proceeds to threaten to return with replacements for the guys in anticipation of them failing him.

Just pointing out one little thing here: I recall Carlos talking in old interviews about the stutter he has, and that it was something he struggled with when filming scenes, but that a lot of those moments were left in the show rather than re-filmed because it was "real" and added to his character. First of all, I agree. Second of all, I don't think it was something I noticed much when I originally watched the show, but I am catching a lot of those moments now. He seems to have the sound/syllable and word repetition type that strikes at the beginning of sentences since it's almost always on the first word or sound of a line, and then he's fluent for the rest of it.

Only mentioning because I stutter as well, and I love representation!

Gustavo soon discovers that he's got nobody to watch his mansion while he's away. He immediately has four very willing volunteers.

"You want me to let the monkeys mansion sit?" Gustavo replies. Hehehe. I always liked this line because (I assume) it's a reference to The Monkees, which is the show Big Time Rush is based off of. I used to watch The Monkees on reruns Sunday mornings and had fun catching scenes and plotlines that I recognized from BTR doing them. I remember that much of the "Big Time Wedding" episode plot was taken from The Monkees episode "Everywhere a Sheik, Sheik."

Kelly, ever the voice of reason, takes Gustavo aside and tells him to let the boys watch his house. It'll be a good way to thank them. Without any other prospects, Gustavo reluctantly agrees.

Later on at the Palm Woods, Mama Knight is not okay with the arrangement. She thinks they're too young to have such responsibility, to which Kendall points out he's sixteen, and Logan and Mrs. Knight have one of my favorite exchanges.

I love Mrs. Knight so much.

And what makes this even funnier is that I sincerely doubt Logan's "That is older than you, isn't it?" was meant in a joking or disrespectful way? Like. This is Logan Mitchell. This kid wouldn't purposely make a dig at his second mother like that. I have to believe that Logan is GENUINELY unsure if Mrs. Knight is younger than 64. Which is funny for a whole plethora of other reasons.

Eventually, Mrs. Knight agrees to let the guys give it a try. She drops them off at the mansion and tells them that she programmed her number into their speed dials. "Just dial 'M' for Mommy," she says, to which my heart instantly melts.

Once inside, the guys quickly start breaking rules, beginning with a race to the media room that's initiated by Kendall. He tried so hard to be responsible for like five seconds, but the allure of a fancy mansion evidently trumps Kendall's need for control and keeping his friends in line. After a round of video games, rule number two is broken when the guys discover a locked fridge. After a sledgehammer-wielding Carlos breaks the lock, they find out that it's filled with

Ridiculous boys.

Back at the Palm Woods, Mama Knight is already suffering from Empty Nest Syndrome. She misses her son terribly and basically feels that she isn't needed anymore. Katie doesn't count, since she's much more independent and apparently hasn't truly "needed" Mrs. Knight in a while.

Katie, being the attentive daughter that she is, immediately fakes illness so that her mother has a reason to dote on someone and feel needed. Very sweet. This is giving me some thoughts about the fact that Mrs. Knight so badly needs to be needed and Kendall ALSO has an intense need to be needed. Hmm. Thoughts for another post maybe.

As the guys all hang out in Gustavo's media room, eating obscene amounts of pudding, Kendall knocks over the domino that sets all the coming chaos officially in motion.

Kendall's entire life is flashing before his eyes. He is in TROUBLE. How are you gonna explain this to Dad, Kendall? Huh??

"Logan. Brain. Now," Kendall pleads—a refreshing change of pace from previous episodes where Logan has demanded solutions for problems from Kendall. Logan proposes they use cat litter because one of the main ingredients is a "natural absorbent." And can I just say that this fact has never left my brain in all these years? To this day, whenever I spill food or need to get a stain out of something, I often have Logan popping into my head with his cat litter fact. Thanks, Logan.

Gustavo's cat shows up, pees on the couch, gets tossed out of the house by Carlos, and Logan accidentally activates the disco ball. Kendall gives a hurried pep talk to assure them they can fix things, and we immediately cut to five minutes later, in which everything has absolutely fallen apart.

Btw, James's delivery of "I think I broke the statue" while he's holding the very clearly broken statue absolutely would make me and my sister lose our minds. We thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Including a clip because I'm still not over it.

Also, we occasionally have scenes of Gustavo and Kelly's trip, but I'm cutting that from my commentary for the sake of post length. Basically, Gustavo has discovered The Windmills, a boy band who will do anything he says. Gustavo starts thinking they're a better option than his dogs back home.

Gustavo's mansion is destroyed, but Logan has a solution! "There's a four a.m. flight to Bolivia. We get there, change our names, raise alpacas."

I love Logan. This guy is ready to abandon his entire life and start over in a new country in order to avoid Gustavo's wrath. I also love dear, sweet Carlos, who is the only one to enthusiastically nod his approval of the plan.

Kendall, however, has a better plan. He knows just who to call to help them put this whole horrible mess back together. Mama Knight to the rescue!

Together, they stay up all night cleaning up all their messes. They finish just as Gustavo is walking up to the door, and Katie and Mrs. Knight quickly skedaddle—but not before Kendall is able to voice his appreciation to his mama.

One of my favorite moments of the episode. Kendall is such a loving son, and Mrs. Knight is such a wonderful mother. Love me a healthy parent and child relationship. I'm so glad that Kendall, who so often has the weight of the world resting on his shoulders, has his mother to depend on and trust so completely. Beautiful.

Gustavo hurries inside, finds the guys innocently lounging around in their jammies, and has something important to say to them before they leave. It takes some effort, but he manages to say that he likes them. The mended statue immediately re-breaks, the guys make a break for it, and Gustavo retreats to the bathroom for some aspirin, where he is ATTACKED by the alligator that escaped his moat. End of episode.

I love this one. It was always one of my favorites and probably one of the funniest of the first season.

What’s funny to me is how 1D opened for BTR and now they have Dixie DAmelio opening for them…it’s a personal opinion but they should’ve found someone who actually wants the fame and not because it was handed to them because 1D wanted it and they became HUGE after opening for them…anyways

lol they can have whoever they want to open for them and frankly the space btr is occupying in this comeback being something definitely “water-down” with already having done concerts and being fairly late to the pandemic-catalyzed “reunions” I think it’s not necessarily a surprising artist pick? like the band back in 2012 occupied a very different space in the industry than they do at the moment which shapes who opens etc etc. that said I don’t really have an opinion either way. I don’t listen to her music but hey if they’re going to put in the work a tour takes then that’s at least not having fame handed to them lol

Summary: The boys try to do something special for the reader’s birthday while on tour but it might take a quick turn into something more.

Warnings: No just the friends to lovers prompt and rusher!reader because I love BTR (me? including Big Time Rush in yet another one of my works? I bet no one saw it coming).

A/N: IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY! so this kind of a request I did for myself, the original idea for this was to write 5sos x platonic!reader but it became friends to lovers with Michael. The BTR songs I mention can be found here, here, here, here and here

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY” four voices exclaimed waking you up in a quite abruptly way making you forget you were in a bunk in a tour bus hitting yourself with the bunk above yours.

“Ouch sorry” Ashton said “anyways happy birthday to the best tour mom ever”

“Yeah and don’t tell my mom Ash said that” Luke chirped in making you smile.

Even though every time your four best friends had to go on tour begged you to come with them sometimes it just wasn’t possible for you but this time you managed to make time for this tour and whenever it was possible for you to join them you looked after them, stopping them from getting too drunk after a show in case they had to do interviews or something important the next morning or making sure their show outfits were ready before or during soundcheck. You loved and cared for them and they loved and cared for you it was the most beautiful friendship you could ever have.

“Thanks guys” you smiled again with a sleepy voice “how come you woke up before I did?”

“Well we wanted to do something special and surprise you” Michael explained “we can stop near a bakery and buy you a proper cake but for now you’ll have to settle for the last package of Oreo we have”

Calum handed you the package it had a piece of paper pasted to the envelope it said “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” with markers of different colors and their signatures it was the sweetest thing they could’ve done for you.

“You don’t have to buy me anything seriously this is enough” you replied opening the package.

“But we want to” Michael spoke again “You do so much for us”

For a second you lost yourself in his eyes, you had fallen for one of your best friends and after months of denial, thinking it was a stupid crush and it would fade, two weeks ago you finally admitted that you had fallen for him and how could you not? He was sweet and dorky and everything you’ve ever wanted.

“Uh you know what I’m going to get ready for today” you put your Oreos on your bunk “you can eat some if you want”

You left them and went to the back of the bus you closed the door the sound of Big Time Rush began to come from where you were now. Michael smiled of course you were listening to BTR when getting ready he thought it was sweet.

“I think the best birthday present you could give to her is telling her how you feel” Ashton suggested taking a cookie and putting it in his mouth.

“I-what?” Michael gasped “how do you guys know?”

“Mate you’re not very good at hiding your feelings we all noticed” Calum chuckled “don’t worry she’s just as oblivious as you are”

“Can you guys speak lower?” Michael whispered “I can’t have her hearing this”

“She has Big Time Rush sounding as loud as possible from the bluetooth speakers” Ashton laughed “she must be too busy enjoying herself dancing like crazy right now. She’s not going to listen to any of this”

Michael nodded he had a point the song playing was If I Ruled The World and it was your favorite BTR song and by now they had it memorized too “Do you really think I should do something about it?”

“Yep” Luke quickly answered “I can’t stand another conversation with her and about you”

“She told you?” Michael questioned again eyes wide open.

“Dude you know we are close” Luke shrugged “remember that I introduce you guys to her. Of course, she told me!”

Luke was the only one who knew about your crush on him you begged him not to tell the other boys but of course they found out by themselves and nobody had to tell them everybody around you knew but Michael. Maybe they were right it was time to do something about it.

“I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while now” Michael said “maybe we could add a song to the setlist tonight just for her birthday”

They didn’t allow you in the soundcheck which was weird they always wanted you there to be their number one during every rehearsal you immediately brushed it off “Maybe they are planning something silly for my birthday” you thought and kept playing with your phone and listening to music in the tour bus.

By the time of the concert the boys surprised with a cake singing happy birthday to you as funny and as out of tune as they possibly could making you laugh and smile.

“We told you we’d get you a proper cake” Michael smiled “now blow your candles and make a wish”

“Thank you, guys, so much” you said before blowing the candles.

“What did you wish for?” Michael asked.

“Not telling” you smirked “not going to come true if I tell”

“Well let’s eat some cake we have to get to the stage in around half an hour” Luke said.

After your small, improvised party the guys rushed to the stage you of course stood by the side of the stage watching your best friends having the time of their life.

“Cause I’m really not fine at all” they finished amnesia it was followed by the deafening sound of the fans screaming.

“Hey guys” Michael spoke “so tonight it’s a pretty special night because Y/N’s here and it’s her birthday today” and the fans screamed even more. They loved you and even considered you the fifth member of the band because of how pretty your friendship with the boys was.

“She’s a big fan of a band called Big Time Rush and she’s been begging us to do a BTR cover for a long time now” you rolled your eyes at Mike’s comment you weren’t begging you just told them it’d be pretty cool if they did just one song “and since today’s her birthday we are going to surprise her by finally singing one of their songs”

That’s why you weren’t allowed in the soundcheck “Put your lights in the air and please sing this if you know it this is Stuck”

“But I just keep getting…” Mike sang looking at you.

“Stuck, stuck” the boys joined him with harmonies his eyes never leaving yours.

“But I’m never giving…” Michael face went back to the crowd this was the first time in the whole song that he took his eyes off you.

“Up, up” the boys joined him again for the last part of the song “Thank you guys!”

Again, the fans were screaming a lot of them may not know the song, but the song was basically a Michael solo with beautiful harmonies, and it was something they couldn’t experience live every day.

“The next song it’s from our new album CALM” Luke said to the microphone as Michael changed guitars and the iconic sound of Easier filled up the place.

“Can’t sleep?” You asked Michael he was sitting on one of the sofas at the back of the tour bus.

“What are you doing up?” he questioned.

“I can’t sleep either” you sat next to him “great show tonight by the way I really enjoyed the cover section today…thank you”

“Well the four of us wanted to do something special for you…”

“I knew it was your idea” you interrupted him “I could tell it was your idea. It just screamed Michael to me”

“Yes, it was my idea” he said smiling at you “it was nothing I know how much you love those guys I just had to do it and I know someday they’ll get back together and we will collab with them and you can finally meet them then”

“What choice of song” you changed the subject “when I ‘begged’ you to cover a song I told you guys would do a great version of Shot In The Dark or Til’ I Forget About You not Stuck”

“I know that Stuck is one of your favorite songs and I know that you think it’s underrated because a big part of the fandom only recognize Boyfriend as a love song” he explained finally looking at you, you could’ve sworn you saw his eyes shine in the darkness “I know because I listen to you complain about it and this song had a message I really wanted to give to you that’s why I chose it”

“Michael, do you really feel that way about me?” you asked looking down.

“Yeah I do for quite a while now” he answered with a breathless laugh “and I-I think you feel the same?”

“Did Luke tell you?”

“No, he didn’t” he said “actually Ashton told me to do something about it”

“Ashton knows!?” you screamed whispered.

“Apparently everyone knows” he chuckled “but us”

You thought you had been careful and not too obvious about it and of course Luke hadn’t told, you could trust him with your life.

“Can I kiss you?” Michael questioned after a moment of silence.

You just nodded and when his lips touched yours it felt like a thousands fireworks in your stomach it was magical, it was perfect and even though you birthday ended about 3 hours ago it was the best present ever.

“Sorry it took so long” Michael breathlessly said once you pulled apart.

“It was worth it” you smiled leaning to kiss him again.

I'm just watching gmm 2000 and feeling emotional about these guys so let me ramble a little

I discovered gmm by mistake 3 years ago bc YouTube recommend one of youresolouds compilations under a Jenna marbles funny moments

And I watched it and I wanted to understand what was going on the clips so I started watching random videos and found their music and understood their vibe you know. And by the time my sister got sick I remember coming back from the hospital that first time and watch the Christmas episode the year they did a count down. It was such a good episode and genuinely made me feel so much better to just forget about my problems. And I can't thank them enough.

Also having reliable content every week is something we take for granted tbh

I've been feeling less obsessed about them lately as other interests come back but i know I'll always love them deep in my heart like I do all of the members of BTR, the Sherlock cast and Dan and Phil.

But yeah this episode reminded me of all the good times I had and all the friends I've made being here. So yeah...

"Logan couldn't breathe. Every time James took a breath, and his chest expanded, it was like he took the air directly from Logan's lungs. Just thinking about it he couldn't stop his eyes from scanning James' exposed skin, his collar bones where they jutted out from under the thin straps over his shoulders. His hands folded and tucked a little accompanying piece of pink material around his strong muscles and around his middle, Logan's eyes followed the twitching of his fingers. They were so long and James was just so damn tall. He towered over Logan even more than usual in the high heels."

" When James stepped out of the toilet cubicle, Logan couldn't breathe.

Everything he had been thinking about saying vanished instantly with a flash of pink and surprise.

It was funny, ironic, really, he'd never been very good with dates and girlfriends because the "tongue-tied" feeling all the love songs talked about never seemed to happen to him, he'd often wondered if he was just destined to overthink everything. Not for lack of trying that is, James had insisted he at least try to like people, try to he interested in *someone*, but he'd always found the books on the subject more insightful, like Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice (he never told the guys this though, only Katie, his book buddy, knew about them). Although, Camille, he had thought was different. But...

What drew his attention first was the fit. James' figure was obvious through the material, the strong lines of his sides were clear with the tightness of the dress, it followed his natural curves all the way down to his hips, where the dress branched out and got looser, rippling in soft folds of pink. If he were a woman, he'd probably be considered an hourglass figure, but he was tall and straight in some places with vivid curves in others, it really was something to look at. His shape was sharp but also extremely soft, the way James went about getting fit was aggressive, kind of like he was going to war with himself, with his demons, but his reasons for it were soft, and Logan knew from looking at his stomach that, even with the twisted pink dress his skin was soft, it showed in the parts of his body that were exposed, like his chest. He'd seen James' body countless times, most recently in the pool just last week. They had gone swimming all their lives, it came naturally to get dressed together (not in the same room, obviously, James' liked his bathroom time) and just go out and enjoy it. But somehow this was different, seeing him all done up like a woman... And yet, he wasn't a woman, but he wasn't a man either. He was somewhere in between, he was James. But he wasn't James. It was all so confusing.

It was a struggle to pull his eyes upwards when he realised he was staring at James' bare legs where he was too tall for the dress to reach below his knees, he even suited the sharp black high heels. James didn't didn't seem to notice though, pulling a face of feigned discomfort.

"I can't believe this was *your* idea" James said, staggering over to the boy's sink and glaring into the mirror. He pulled a thumb under his lips to smarten out the lipstick, making kissy faces. Somehow he'd managed to not smudge even the corners of his mouth, all the lines on his eyes were careful as well, if Logan didn't know better he'd have said "experienced", but he did know better. At least, he thought he did. It was no secret James was more feminine than usual, obsessed with his appearance to an unhealthy point, but this was a step further.

James had done all the getting dressed by himself, in the little cubicle, Logan had been grateful because no way would he have been able to put on someone's makeup. Looks like he didn't need any help though.

"What, uh, what is that supposed to mean?" He said.

It was hard to focus on something that wasn't James' dark eyes, long lashes highlighted by an underscore of subtle black eyeliner. God, he was beautiful. The lipstick suited him so goddamn much, he was just so extra, with the matching headband as well. To say Logan hadn't been expecting that transformation was putting it mildly.

James wasn't looking at him when he replied, still intent on perfecting his hair, sweeping it aside and out of his eyes, combing fingers through it like he thought it needed perfecting, how could he even think that?

Logan jumped when he spoke eventually. "Just that I mean, well" he met Logan's eye in the mirror, "I didn't think you'd even consider... This" he made a vague gesture to all of himself, dress and all.

His eyes were downcast and he smiled, a little shyly, strangely, and for just a moment, a flash, Logan saw Camille in James. When he was telling her that he couldn't be with her for awhile, that he needed time for himself to understand what he wanted, what he needed, she had looked at him with this self depreciating, and openly vulnerable look that.. had just been so uncharacteristic of her that he'd nearly blurted out "forget everything, kiss me" on the spot and forgiven her, but alas he hadn't, maybe they wouldn't be here now if he had. He couldn't find it in himself to feel about it.

If James had looked up at Logan in that moment, he knew Camille would be there, hiding behind his eyes. Or maybe it was the other way around. It was gone as fast as it had appeared and he stumbled over his words, trying to remember what the question was.

"Wha- what? Why?"

It was hard to comprehend much of anything. He felt dizzy, lost. James might have been saying something but he couldn't hear him, Logan was under water, he felt like he was a frog with its mouth stuck hanging open and waiting. Like a statue.

Something had changed. It was akin to the continents shifting into place. "

I honestly love btr so much and I ship like every ship, and I'm so here for gender fluid James.
